Alright, well then unless we have anybody strongly disagreeing, I believe we've found our first mate decision making process. As soon as the captain is declared, everyone with have two "thank" votes for first mate. Be sure to choose based on who you think will work well with the captain!
@Zero Hex
Position: Navigator/helmsman/fisherman/fighter

That's what I meant by spreading him thin, giving that many listed positions/job titles. I did read him in his entirety, though I did forget about the work in progress portion, which is entirely my bad. I read him when posted last night when I was stupidly tired, and again earlier today when reviewing everyone. Only the second time I neglected to reread the paragraph above the actual CS. That being said, I did state when I was reviewing all CSes for the final round of approvals. I'm sorry he wasn't 100% completed at that time.

Now the fun begins! As soon as all your CSes are moved to the character tab, voting for the captain position begins. Here's how I've designed it. Everyone gets 2 votes to give to two different characters you think would make the best captain. Vote by hitting the like tag on the character page. Once everyone has made their votes, the character with the most likes is officially the captain! Any player may choose to not have their character in the running, and you may use less than your 2 votes if you so choose.

As for first mate, I hadn't finalized that yet. Either a separate vote, or the runner up. What are your thoughts?
Alright, after a day of errands and only being able to read bits and pieces throughout the day, I've come to my decision. It was a really hard one. 5 characters, all of which have some pretty great work put in their development, but only 3 spaces available. I had to base this off of what the crew still needed to be effective in a long voyage, synergy with already approved characters, and overall appeal. With that said, here are my critiques.

@Zero Hex It is unfortunate, but I have to deny you. It appears that you did not read the rules. My additional critiques for the character himself would be that he literally has no history, and you spread him over pretty thin by giving him a wide range of both jobs and abilities related to those jobs. I'm not sure if he was intended to be the jack of all trades and able to "back up" the primary crew members as an assistant, but it ends up feeling like he has less of his own identity and focus. This is a shame, because these are all fairly easy fixes and I enjoy the concept. He'd add a great amount of cultural value. I'm sorry, but Samu Isaia is denied on those grounds.

@yoshua171 and @Leaves, you are competing against one another for a doctor position, but you put in vastly different types of characters. Lilliana is more of an omnidisciplinary scientist, while Feya is a dedicated doctor as well as a general health/fitness nut. Comparing these two together for the same spot was like comparing apples to oranges, so I determined that they both have great merit they can add to the crew. Welcome aboard to both of you. Leaves, I do have a concern about how vague Feya's history is. While you're both approved, I'd still very much like you to expand on it and add details.

Which brings me to the most difficult, painful decision of this whole character selection process. @Demon Shinobi. @Spiffy. The two of you put in characters that are so very similar in so many ways, but differ in the key details. Both are gunners primarily but can work with blades in a pinch. Both have a similar clothing scheme. Both are Ds (even if one is a joke). Both are alcoholics, but one struggles with the real tragedies of such a condition while the other is empowered by it. They both even have tremendous willpower as a special trait! You have no idea how hard this is, but I set myself a starting limit of 8 and I'm not one to break my own rules. So here it goes. *Sigh*

Kite embodies more of the "One Piece" feel, having both a sense of tragedy in his heritage, as well as the over the top silly nature of the setting (drunkenness empowers him, sleep poking, etc.) while Boone is mostly tragedy after tragedy. That being said, since I know Spiffy in real life, I know he'll keep it funny in character all the time. Boone is not just a gunner though, and the crew needs a navigator. Meanwhile, Kite has one of the same problems that Hex's character does: spread too thin over a wide variety of skills and positions already taken, but none of them is "navigator." Conversely, Boone is more focused and specialized. At risk of being thought of as biased toward my soul brother, I will have to choose Boone. I'm very sorry, Shinobi, it was a really close decision. I'll keep seeing you in Titans Beyond, where RA and Accel can continue to be the dream team.
Ok, time to start analyzing the currently available CSes. Leaves PM'd his to me, but for ease of comparison I'm copying it to this post. My determination might still take me a while, since the wife and I are running around doing errands.

At this point, there is now less to do with the character itself and your attitude in this whole exchange. It sincerely feels as though you are being argumentative now for the sake of getting your way, when I explicitly stated this wasn't the kind of character I had intended to participate in this game. Even so I have provided a compromise as you clearly put a good deal of effort and thought into Horse. Unfortunately this is not only not good enough for you, but also every response you provide carries an increasing tone of negativity and accusation. I am sorry, but at this time I shall have to completely reject Horse due to your inability to work within the guidelines I had discussed with you, and general disrespect. I sincerely hope you find a game more appropriate to your expectations.
@Leaves I'll do you one better and give you until next morning, since that's when I planned to do my next round of judging.

@Geyter Sounds good either way. If you hurry you can compete, but a viewer is just as good. :)

@ProPro
Well I mean, Chopper is an animal and he's a doctor. Plus there were all those arena contestants who were presumably part of pirate crews and had proper jobs as well. Big Mom has a magical talking rabbit man on her crew who explicitly isn't a Mink, as well.

Chopper ate the human human fruit. The rabbit had some of a human soul put in it by Big Mom. Both are extreme exceptions with zero correlation to Horse. As you've designed him, he's a beast of burden no more intelligent than other animal companions shown in One Piece. He has far more in common with Shelly or Chouchou than Chopper or that rabbit. I also have no idea what arena contestants you're talking about. The only time I remember an animal fighting in an arena was the Corrida Colosseum tournament for the flare flare fruit, which had the fighting fish and the bull, both of which were natural obstacles for the combatants to deal with. If you have something else you can remember, please cite the specifics and I'll gladly consider the statement.

That being said, could you go ahead and give me a list of these "necessities" that need to be filled? I mean, from what I've gathered, we're neither sticking to One Piece crew roles nor are we going with actually important real life crew roles. Since I have no idea what you want, I think this would go smoother if you just let me know straight up so I can accommodate you.

We do want One Piece crew roles. You previously asked me if we were straight up copying the Straw Hat crew, which is a profoundly different question. After all, a pirate ship does not usually require an archaologist nor a singer. Now to accommodate your request, the positions that are necessary to survive a long voyage are: navigator, doctor, cook, shipwright, and a gunner/sniper/sharpshooter to ensure those ship encounters don't end poorly. Anything after that is not necessary but adds additional flavor to the ship.[/quote]

Moving on, I don't see why I need to have an arbitrary amount of posts to join a game. I'm primarily a lurker, and I can tell you firsthand that plenty of this site's major flakes have massive post counts, since all they do is chatter in the OOC and then leave.

I'm not looking at strictly post count though. It's the ratio of post to time on site, and many of your posts are from 3 months ago. You have to see how this is very concerning. Further, you not addressing this concern of mine before only raised more flags, as it came across as flippant and ignoring what I feel to be a very real potential problem. Yes many of the most flighty members have massive post counts. Believe me, I keep tabs on them, but it isn't about post count alone. It's post count compared to time on the site. Are there exceptions? Yes. That's why I asked you to let me know that you would be one of those exceptions and have the dedication I'm looking for, instead of first ignoring my request then dismissing it as unimportant.

Frankly, it feels a bit like you're reaching for reasons to reject me. I won't speculate as to why, but I would like to point out that putting me on hold like this is a violation of your own "no reservations" policy.

If I were reaching for reasons to deny you, you'd know. I would straight up tell you, "No, I don't like it/you, you cannot play" and that'd be the end of it. Instead I have told you that despite this character not being what I had in mind for this particular game, and therefore something I am completely within my right to outright dismiss, that I like the concept and character so much that I am breaking my reservation policy for this character, as long as all of the major positions are first filled. The ship cannot survive without a doctor. The ship cannot survive without a navigator. It can survive perfectly fine without a pet/mascot. So I compromised and declared that as long as a spot was open once those were filled, this was guaranteed.

This is my bottom line. My original offer stands (and is more likely than not going to work to your benefit). Horse has a spot, provided the next two characters I approve are Spiffy's (navigator and shoot combo), and one of the two competing for a doctor. My original request that you can promise me you will actively participate, both IC and OOC, still holds. I am fine with your statement that you're primarily a lurker. That does not have a negative impact on my decision. I saw a potential problem, and am very direct in confronting, and solving, it.
@Leaves Your primary rival for the position of doctor has finished their CS. I don't intend to rush you, but do you have an ETA so I can judge them side by side like I planned?

@Shortcake At this point I'm not sure if you're trolling me or not. Horse is a fantastic OP character designed as is, which is as a (albeit intelligent) beast. That's not something that gets an official job title with responsibilities (setting aside how a small pirate vessel with limited crew really doesn't need a quartermaster). You also never addressed the greater concern of mine in approving you for this game. Something like that being ignored is very frustrating. So my previous statement stands. Horse can be approved as is, assuming there's a slot available once all the necessities are covered and you can promise me your dedication. Otherwise you can make a different character that fits the dynamic and plans I was preparing for and try your luck at that.

@Spiffy Let me know as soon as he's totally done and I'll take a gander at him.
Uh, no. We don't want any carbon copies, obviously. I'm talking about important jobs that any sailing ship needs in order to function for long voyages. Navigators, cooks, shipwrights, etc.
That is one scary horse.

@ProPro
Could I reserve the position to become a doctor? I won't be able to make a character today until after midnight. I have a few college assignments I need to finish before I begin writing recreationally.

@Leaves
Pro has mentioned previously in talks that he does not work with reservations.

A heads up, because I don't particularly expect him to make an exception.

Though he has surprised me before.

And I could be remembering completely wrong. My brain does that.

(Also, good luck with your assignments)

OA is correct, I do not work with reservations. However I am also not first come first serve. I set aside a period of time to allow new CSs to accumulate, then judge them individually, and if there is any crossover, I make a decision based on what I think is more appropriate/interesting/overall better quality. I will say to you that there's another individual working on a "scientist" which includes medical knowledge. I will allow you both time to finish and I will make a decision between the two (as well as any other "doctor" types that might spring up in the meantime).

Edit: That said, I'm done with looking over CSs until at least tomorrow.
