Corinne and Liliane

Rather than answer her name, Liliane had darted back to the table, tugging a pitiable-looking Corine after her. Honestly, how expressive she could be with those ears... did she need to look that much like a kicked puppy just because her dinner was left slightly unfinished? It wasn't like she couldn't go back and eat it after they were done signing up. Fortunately, Corinne cheered up pretty much immediately, even though she was remaining firmly behind Liliane.

Not that it did all that much good to hide behind her, since they were the same height and Liliane was a waifish thing.

"Liliane," the white-haired Hundi said, keeping her introduction brief.

Unaware that she had already been introduced, Corinne followed suit, accent surprisingly pronounced, "Corinne Julienne Delphine de Tiffauges, at your service. Ah... I'm quite a new wand, so I 'ope you won't hold it against me. But my wife is much more experienced than I am!"

She was even pushing Liliane ahead slightly, as if trying to offer her as a bribe.
Beni-Enma

Runa found her command falling on empty space, her Servant having moved even before she could finish speaking or even react to what was going on. When it came to reaction times, the childlike Servant boasted a response that was almost second to none, even before one could factor in her own innate sense for danger. Then, when it came to moving quickly, few were those who could keep up with a bird in flight, especially one like this.

Which is to say, by the time Runa had finished giving the command, Beni-Enma had already rushed to the source of the explosion in an attempt to determine the perpetrator.
Corinne and Liliane

As she had said, Liliane got up to look at the boards, eyes flicking through the appropriate quests. It couldn't be too easy--those were dull and she didn't want to take any work away from those just starting out--but it also couldn't be something too hard due to Corinne's total lack of experience. Out of those that seemed the right range... ah, an extermination or an exploration quest? Whilst there was no doubt that magic would be an efficient way of clearing out orcs, she just couldn't see the soft-hearted girl really taking that well as her first really combat-focused job.

"Room for more? I'm looking for something less combat-focused," the white-haired Hundi said, hearing the paladin's statement of interest. "Still getting Corinne over there used to adventuring."

Neither of them fit the bill for "taller", only the guild's fairies and Nem were shorter than they were, but Liliane was reasonably well known as an experienced adventurer. Not so well-known, but hardly a secret, was that she'd gone on a trip to Ithillin and come back married--it didn't take a genius to work out where Corinne came into all this, then.
Cat

"That is my problem," the catgirl said, pausing in rolling off her one sock to point at the newcomer, "It's cold and wet! We could go a way that isn't cold and wet!" Although the complaints aside, Tanja appeared to be in no hurry to push the matter, taking her footwear in her free hand and starting to walk downstream. Apart from her somewhat grumpy expression, she didn't really appear to be affected by the code; there was certainly no shivering going on.

"I'll say if I find any sudden holes or something you can fall in."

If nothing else, might as well let the person who wouldn't be seriously injured long-term by natural hazards take the lead.
Corinne and Liliane

The two Hundi were also over by the tavern, though eating as well as drinking. Liliane kept giving the bottle of Ithillane wine Corinne had immediately gone for a frustrated look; it was possibly the most expensive thing you could get here without asking for something truly exotic. To her, one of those adventurers who hoarded every penny she could earn... that sort of spending was just uncomfortable. Not having to be concerned about money was just such a... strange thought and she still couldn't get used to her wife's frankly cavalier attitude towards buying things worth as much as an entire job payment.

Corinne was, naturally, blissfully unaware of such things, eating through the hearty stew with a thoughtful look. Probably not to suggest ways the taste could be improved--she'd already stopped talking about that--but instead to stare at the elf. "Maybe I should practice my Elvish? I would hate to forget how..."

Liliane fiddled with her spoon a bit. This girl... "You've been speaking it your whole life and keep forgetting I don't understand it. That's not going to happen."

"But what if? I never left home this long before!"

"You've never been to Thaeln and you haven't forgotten that, have you?"

"Well, no..."

"There you are, then. Anyway, I'll go look at jobs in a minute..."

The one downside for anyone hoping to listen in was the entire conversation being in Ithillane.
I could probably post, I think? It just feels a bit weird.
Or, "how to balance out magical potency without sidelining the character/being a load": pair slow magic with someone who deals with the bodyguarding so nobody else has to. Well, that's the aim of that pair.
Tyaethe Radistirin

For her part, the vampire just glanced at the corpses--the smell of old blood was strong enough, annoyingly, that it was clear the violence had started yesterday. And yesterday, a mortally wounded man had come racing from this fortress to the capital to report that something was wrong. Obviously, whatever was going wrong had finished by the time they got here, unless the previous mercenary group had spent all night and most of the day slowly killing the soldiers stationed here. Though with the chaos here? That seemed unlikely.

As for other indications Alette couldn't have done it... well, they weren't necessary, but the gate was probably the biggest one. If she had been the one behind this distress signal, how would a slowly dying man have taken a horse and fled down the straight path towards the capital without being caught or pursued? Her group would have been waiting outside ready to grab anyone who tried to get past. Besides, if they outright broke in--whether by a mage or a half-giant or even a full giant--then it would have been obvious to the defenders and far more of bodies would be here, not to mention--again--the unlikely scenario of taking over a day to do it and then still being at the gate to meet them.

Not important, now, aside from what else it told them. This gate, and the road beyond it, went straight to the capital. You would have to be extremely unwise to traipse an armed band around the countryside here, let alone come past a supposedly-active fort where you could be detected. Since Alette had broken in from this side rather than further out, which would be more reasonable...

"You came from Aimlenn. Who sent you?" Because whoever was behind her presence must have known about this before the messenger came in.
