Current I'm a pretty good writer and former site staff; I still deal with imposter syndrome every time I log on. You're definitely not alone. And t's worth trying anyway.

I just finished The Secret History, a very Gen X book. Never Let Me Go before that, which I'd recommend to any writer outside the MFA atmosphere who wants to know emotonal restraint.

i might be interested. the only batman lore i know is from the show Gotham tho...

I've never seen it. So I have no idea what the disconnects are. ^_^

If you're ever confused about something, you can ask me, or Google: tons of Gotham City/Batman info out there.
GCPD types are love.
@Buddha Well if you have any idea of thing you think I should add to the guide I am writing feel free to hit me up in PM, like what links I should include or anything. Trying to make this a central place for information to be found.

roleplayerguild.com/topics/150081-a-ne..

You mean something like the above?

Biggest issues I've found with that link are:

"Moderation Policy in the Off-Topic Sections" is a broken link.

and

"Reporting Incidents to Moderators" has an outdated Staff list.

Still lists HeySeuss and some chick named Ruby, while not having Hank or Mag Lev.

One thing I would like to see on the forum is a single place to find all the rules and such for the forum, with a bit more explanation put into them so they aren't such a "gray area" - While I was putting together the Articles and Guides Index I found I was having to hop all over the place to find the rule postings on the forum and some of them were even broken links. I haven't added them all yet. (And some are the same ones with just a paragraph added to the end to make them different.) - It can make things a bit confusing for new comers. A streamlined singular central post would be very welcome.

Which were the broken links?

If I remember correctly from my time as Moderator, the rules were designed with "gray area" intended; harder to edge lord and try to be an online litigator--in other words harder to make life difficult for the Guild staff. Harder to "waste time." Again, if I remember correctly. Also please don't try to use poor Ruby as a straw-person if you disagree with that approach. ^_^
There you go. Now, IC, you can do what you want.

Chat it up with another character. Follow Ash and bug him more, if he'll let you. Do a little solo posting, exploring your character's daily high school life. All up to you.

Should you wish to find Emy and engage with her, keep in mind the only way that's possible is to have your character move forward in time to 4th Period and Wood Shop class, or in the Fifteen minute period of time between 3rd and 4th Periods, running into her in the halls as she's moving between her 3rd Period English and 4th Period Wood shop.
Ash Pierce did not smile, nor did he blink--let alone flinch. "I learned about him during my training to become a member of my Order. Our whisperers informed me he is likely in Washington a few days ago. No offense meant, but I assessed your group to be, frankly, not enough of a threat to warrant his notice. I'm still not sure you are; he very well could have been using all of you to get to her. That might explain the afore mentioned spotters; it might not. Just as possible he meant that trap for each of you, separate from the Slayer. For your sakes I genuinely hope not."

The man's back slid back into the back of the chair, as his eyes addressed Danny for a moment in silence. Then he shrugged, in answer, his face cold. "As some of you have indicated, you would be fighting this fight with or without me. Your fates are yours to own. I believe my culpability absolved by breaking with my Order's traditions and engaging all of you this morning. I have said my peace, what each of you does with it is your choice. Go back out, or don't. Seek out the Slayer, or don't. Believe her a monster, or don't. Take heed from my warning, or don't."

The tension, and silence, shattered at the sound of the electronic bell sounding from the school's general PA speaker in the room; First Period was over. Ash Pierce stood, tucked in his chair, and smiled casually. "On to your second periods, then." He turned on his leather loafered heel, and walked out, leaving the door open in his wake as the library outside the room stirred with motion and activity.
Just for the record, @Plank Sinatra, you're not bumped from the game it's just been a week since your last post so I'm feeling free to move the IC along.

Whatever's got you busy or preoccupied or just not feeling all that creative, I hope it passes soon, we miss you. <3
Hey everybody!

I'm Estella, or Stel, or Stella, or whatever you prefer. I've been lurking for a few weeks, but finally decided it was time to make an account and see if I can't get back into roleplaying. I'm not new to it, but it has been a while. I'm looking forward to rediscovering how much fun it is.

I think I'll mostly be looking for fantasy roleplays, with maybe a bit of sci-fi on the side? Who knows. In any case, I'm looking forward to meeting people, writing, and seeing where all this leads :)

GET OFF MY LAWN

Sorry. >> Trying to balance out the nice.

Welcome to the Guild!! The site is pretty friendly as a whole, so never be shy in PMing someone with a question if you've got it. And if you insist on being shy, I got you girl; I've been on this site for, literally, EVER and can answer any question you'd have. So you're always welcome to just ask me. <3

Enjoy.
Let's unpack this a little bit:

Have any of you noticed that it is often several days or even a week or so later until a roleplay truly starts?

There's no hard, fixed, rule about the thing. If I'm doing a RP in Casual that doesn't require a lot of "groundwork" it can go from Interest Check to OOC post to IC post in a relatively short amount of time. Say three days.

If I'm doing an Advanced game with complex histories involved in the Character Sheets, and Character Sheets themselves that involve multiple characters, than it could all take quite a bit longer to go from Interest Check to OOC post to IC post. Weeks aren't out of the question. During this time there's usually OOC chatter going on, either in the OOC thread, or in the game chat, so while there isn't an IC kickoff or lots of Character Sheets getting posted, there's still a fair amount going on.

So long as you don't lose your group of RPers, I think you're okay. Push too hard, or wait too long, and yeah--you run into issues as a GM.

So the thought crossed my mind, but do some people space out the process of starting a roleplay to a length that is too long?

Yes. It's probably not terribly difficult to find examples of this.

Could, or more should, a GM place a character sheet template in the Interest Check so people can start working on their characters sooner?

Could they? Sure. Sometimes they do, sometimes I have. Should they? If they'd like to, sure. If they don't want to, if they want people to wait until the OOC is up, that's fair enough. Really depends on how complicated a character sheet it's going to be and how long a wait until the OOC goes up.

And how much should a GM prepare their own works (OOC, Characters, and IC #1) before choosing to start their roleplay?

Depends on what you mean by "start their RP." If you mean, by the time you throw up an Interest Check, probably not. (Again it's up to everyone's own preferences.) What if you don't get enough interest? What if your OOC needs to change because of questions/issues brought about during the IntCheck phase? Ditto the first IC post: what if you need to know what characters you have so you can include them?

It's a good idea to have a solid foundation and good grasp on your game before throwing up an IntCheck, unless you're just usually good at winging it. Otherwise, you want to have some idea what you're doing I think. But do you need your OOC finished before your IntCheck? Probably not. Should you do an IC post before an OOC or IntCheck? You may not want to, for a few reasons.

But, afterall, GMing is a rather personal thing. Each person has their own methods, each person has their own preferences, and so long as they can make it work, that's all that really matters. If it's not working out for them, you'd hope they either reevaluate, or just stick to being a RPer and not a GM.

"Gotham City. Clean shafts of concrete and snowy rooftops. The work of men who died generations ago. From here, it looks like an achievement. From here, you can't see the enemy."

Game Brief:
  • Batman first began to appear 15 years ago.
  • The Joker recently died in the chaos of one of his own schemes.
  • Jim Gordon effectively retires as Commissioner of the GCPD following Joker's death.
  • Batman hasn't been seen for nearly a month.
  • Will take place in Gotham City.
  • Street level characters only.

This game will focus on the Bat-family, and other faces of Gotham City, not Batman. It's a sandbox style with large events for everyone to tackle thrown in. For players wanting to have fun reading and reacting, you're more than welcome to get your character and settle in. For those players who are interested in story and plot development, you're more than welcome to participate. Just send me a PM, and I'll let you see what I got; any suggestions or tweaks or twists I like I'll be more than happy to incorporate into the game and give due credit for.

Batman may or may not be dead; but for certain he won't be around during the beginning stages of the game. Well, not Bruce-Batman, I suppose if someone wanted to play a Dick-Batman then there would be a Batman. But not the Batman. This is done to give the rest of the Bat family some room to breath, and grow, in a more natural and organic way. Otherwise Gotham City is your oyster; play a Mafioso looking to bring Mafia strength back to the city, play a young Detective in GCPD looking to take up Jim Gordon's legacy, or just create your own vigilante inspired by the Bat.
