Keeping an RP alive is as much the players' responsibility as it is the GM's.

The most important period in an RP's life is when the responses start to slow after the initial honeymoon phase. This is THE deciding time for whether or not an RP dies.

Share those D&D stories!

lmao you beat me to saying that

Yeah, I usually classify TTRPG stories differently in my mind, but don't let that stop y'all from sharing those too!
My advice based on that is don't get into the habit of waiting for the stars to align like me; slap whatever shit down you can and be willing to fail sometimes. Because sub-optimal yet tangible beats optimal but at most hypothetical.

Hella agreed on this point. The first few steps into a pool freeze you up, but after that it warms up quick.
was too afraid of overloading the players with information that i didnt properly express the concepts i wanted to explore and wasnt assertive enough with posting schedules and activity. rp died within the first page

Ah, that's one I'm guilty of too. I had a world and plans I was really happy with, then bungled it by not communicating it properly and then getting overly frustrated when things didn't pan out. It was a humbling experience, for sure. I had to come to the realization that different people get into an RP for different things.

bet make the thread

That might be a good idea for another thread.

Everyone post their greatest personal RPing failures.

I don't honestly remember mine because I mostly block that shit out, but I'm sure I've ghosted folks a good few times. Haven't joined several RPs I wanted to because I either couldn't come up with a good enough character or couldn't match up to the writing standard.

y’all asked so i delivered. Feels like all i post nowadays are discussion topics anyways lmao
YOU ASKED FOR IT, NERDS. In an effort to foster community love and spread the suffering, let’s hear about your dark and brooding pasts and what you learned from them!

I’ll start us off.

My greatest failure was when I made a great big fantasy RP on a different site that shall not be named. It was glorious! I had magic, custom races, incredible world building, and a wonderful plot, to boot! I was ready for everyone to love it! People would sing tales of my great RP for years to come.

It died after like 5 posts lmao

I fucked up because I pushed my own plans way too hard and didn’t think about what players wanted. I was just better off writing my own novel if I wasn’t gonna listen to players.

This thread has more derailed posts than most ICs have responses.

I understand this mentality, but this is where I think the problem you have with RPing lies.

Gonna be redundant here, but it's a fact of life. It sucks when an RP dies. It sucks when you get SUPER ready for an RP and then something happens. God knows I was so fucking ready for Destiny's Call and then Reia just dipped ;-;

But you can't hold it against people. You really can't.

Shit happens. It happens a LOT. People get ill, they have to move, they go to school, they drown under homework, depression. There are so MANY things that happen to everybody. So much of it is uncontrollable. So much of it is inevitable. And, sometimes, people just don't have the time or energy to say something. Obviously it would be GREAT if everyone could, but everyone has their own circumstances. Maybe someone's house fuckin burns down and they're left without internet access for a whole three months. I'm sure the first thought in their mind isn't "man I really gotta tell my RP partner that I can't respond." It's probably more like "holy shit my house burned down with all my valuables and I have to get my life back together and find another place to live and survive." And you definitely can't fault them for ghosting in that situation, right?

And of course, that's an extreme. Of course most of your partners or groups won't be dealing with something as heavy as that. Most of the time it's just motivation, or schoolwork, or any of the things I said above and more.

The key thing is to remember the human. There's another person there on the other side of the screen. There's someone else typing out their own worlds, characters, stories. There's another person dealing with their own set of life circumstances. You have to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. I'm never going to call or even think of someone as cowardly or selfish.

I'm NOT them. I DON'T know what's going on in their head. It's up to them to share it. If they don't want to, that's FINE. It's their life, they can choose who to share it with. I can't be so conceited as to make a judgement as to one's character because of something I don't and will never know. Because at that point, it will start to feel like everyone who ghosts has something against me. It leads to... not good things.

Please, I'm begging you. This is the one thing I want you to take away from my long-ass message. Please don't think of others as cowardly or selfish for ghosting. You don't know what's going on in their lives. You don't know what they're going through. It's simply impossible to make a judgement like that. Ghosting happens. What you need to do is let it go, and move on. Please, remember the human.
*cries in Persona*

oof, that one hurts lol I was so fuckin ready for Asclepius. That's just how it be ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I just wanna weigh in on the whole RP death thing by adding absolutely nothing to the conversation a permanent GM's two cents.

I can understand how you feel, @rebornfan320. You might got good ideas, good characters, hell, even a good camaraderie goin' on with your partner (or group). And then BOOM BAM POW it's all gone (or is it more of a gradual whizzzzzzz as the air deflates out of the RP?)

I've been a GM for ages now. Lots of years. I honestly dunno when I started, at this point. As much as it saddens me to say it, I still haven't seen a forum RP to completion. It's not even an issue with the players I have, and I don't think it's a personal problem of mine, either. It's just the nature of RPing. Hell, my longtime 1x1 partner and I let our RPs die all the goddamn time. It just happens. But we keep going because it's about the journey. And also because of our insatiable need to use the godlike faceclaims we find online.

In the end, I gotta tell you, there's no solving the problem you're having with ghosting. It's all about your perspective. you just gotta keep doin' it. You just gotta keep trying. Cuz if you don't, then you're done with RP. That's just how it is. RPers ghost and get ghosted. It's like a fact of life, a universal constant, like death, taxes, and country music.

You have to find your own fun. Keep searching, man. I'm sure there's a group or partner out there that'll satisfy your needs. It's all a matter of looking hard enough for them. If you can't afford that time or energy, no shame! There are a bajillion other things to do in life other than sending lil messages on a backwater internet forum. Just ask yourself, "Is it worth it?" and let your answer guide you. And, just like country music, if you can't accept that answer, you're gonna have to find something else to listen to.

NINJA EDIT: OH GOD I SENT THIS BEFORE I SAW THE MOST RECENT MESSAGES O_O
I miss @Haha...
