CHAPTER #4: Casualties

Su Tinh Lang Valley - War Zone F Sin-Cong

Mourn your dead land of the free!
If you want to be a hero follow me
Mourn your dead land of the free!
If you want to be a hero follow me

The plan was to ride straight into contested territory, pretending we were a bunch of vegetable crates in the back of a farmer's truck. Vân had all the valid papers for an innocent bystander. The PRA let hundreds of people pass their blockades without a second look: this was their country, after all, and -no matter what congress said- their movement held the hearts and minds of the common folk. They shouldn't have given him a second look.

But they did. Now Vân's body rotted in a shallow grave. Hoyle had insisted we didn't just leave him on the road with the rest of the dead. Felt wrong. I didn't want to waste time. Our operation window was short- made even shorter by our lack of wheels.

Curtis gave me the look, though. That one he always put on whenever I said something utterly batshit. I knew to trust that look, and relented. Didn't need the squad turning on me so far outside the wire because I didn't have a goddamn heart. Not sure what burying him did for Vân, though. We already let him die. Couldn't take anything more from him than that.

I led the fire team into the jungle. Captain goes first so the men can see his confidence. Standard operating procedure for the Corps. The yellow bellied officers that shoved their men forward first never lasted long in Siangcong. They tended to become 'combat casualties' while they slept in their bunks, if you get my meaning.

I don't know how I missed the tripwire. Maybe I distracted myself thinking about the ambush. Maybe I just got unlucky. Either way, I was five steps ahead of Monk when his shin caught a line and he fucking exploded. Grenade pin tied to a fishhook: primitive, but effective. My best gunner rained down from the canopy in wet chunks. Stephen screamed. His head was probably ringing just as bad as mine; he'd been just a few steps behind Monk, after all. I told him to. Told him that was the safest place he could be.

Instinct taught me to drop to one knee and scan the tree line for rifles.

"Hold!" I shouted over the ringing in my ears, holding up a hand to signal the same. The rest of the team fell into cover positions.

"Oh shit! Shit!" Diesel's terrified screaming morphed into manic laughter. "Ahahahaaa what the hell, dude?! Why are there mines here?"

"Don't move." Hoyle warned. "You know the drill. One bomb means a whole lot more."

"I thought this was s'posed to be clear!" Diesel continued to laugh. "Damn, dude, I told ya'll we can't trust CIA intel for shit. Knew it. Knew those spooks were dirty."

"What are you talking about, Diesel?"

"Told you! The CIA is fuckin' subvertin' our fuckin' democracy, man. Director's a communist. I knew it!"

"Jesus Christ." Goodwin choked. "Jesus Christ, help me."

"Will you shut the hell up for two goddamn seconds?" I barked over my shoulder. This was not the time for Diesel's bullshit. Not with Monk lying in pieces and the threat of death underfoot. "Monk was carrying the sweeper gear. Where's his pack?"

Hoyle sighed, loudly. "Oh his back."

"And where's his back?" I yelled.

After a beat, Curtis spoke to the kid in as calming and reassuring voice as he could muster, given the circumstance: "Corporal Goodwin. Can you reach the backpack?"

"No, no, I can't- I- oh God, look at him-"

"Take a breath, corporal. I need you to stay calm, alright? We need to get the GPR out of Monk's backpack. We have to make sure there aren't more explosives. You're the only one who can reach it without moving."

"Thought he hit a tripwire?" Diesel snorted. "What's the GPR gonna do? Its not in the ground, dude. Its above the ground."

I sucked air in through my teeth. "If you don't shut your mouth in the next two seconds, Dubois, I'm going to turn around and shoot you in the head. Understood?"

"Uh, yes, sir."

Stephen Goodwin started sobbing. I couldn't see what the hell was happening without dropping my sight lines on the jungle, and I wasn't about to break protocol. I just held my breath, hoping that Hoyle could get Goodwin's shit together long enough to get us out of this mess.

Most of the time traps were left behind to grab isolated causalities. Other times, though, they were a precursor to an ambush. We were stuck. Standing like a bunch of erect dicks in an open field. Pinned in by the possibility of more explosives waiting to send us to hell underfoot. Any moment, a barking machine gun could shred me and my squad to pieces, and there wasn't a damned thing we could do about it.

It pissed me off.

We got lucky. Nobody stopped to shoot us. Hoyle talked Goodwin through prying the backpack off Monk's corpse. He dug out their explosive detection gear and threw it back to Diesel. Slowly but surely, he combed the area for mines hidden beneath the earth.

Tripwires were different. They were my job, and I needed a specialized tool to find them: a nylon cord wrapped around a stick. I held it out in front of me and took a walk down the path. Any time the cord brushed on something, I stopped to check for a wire. I found two more wires before circling back.

While we cleared the area, Hoyle rushed over to Goodwin to check him for injuries. Stephen stood stock still while the corpsman patted down his arms, legs, torso and groin for shrapnel. Just because the kid wasn't screaming in pain didn't mean he was fine. Shock was a damn powerful drug. I'd seen more than one soldier just drop in the middle of a firefight. Turned out they'd taken a fatal minutes ago. Didn't even realize they were dead men walking.

"You're good." Hoyle patted Stephen's cheek. "Right? You good?"

Goodwin stared at Hoyle for over five seconds before he finally nodded. Curt knew better than to let that go. He smiled at Stephen, slapped his ass and then made his way over to me.

"Goodwin's cracking, Frank." He whispered.

"He's a recon marine, not some FNG. He'll make it." Even as the words left my mouth I didn't believe them. I wasn't blind. I just didn't like what I saw.

"His head isn't in the fight anymore. He needs to go home. Its all he can think about."

I shook my head. "Primary extraction point is fifteen miles south. We're not even a mile away from the target. Doesn't make sense to go back now."

"I know." Curt grabbed my shoulder. "But-"

If we take the time to escort him out of the valley then our window closes. The chopper crew dies if they're lucky. If-"

"Frank, I know. Listen-"

"-and if they're not then they end up in a goddamn torture camp. You good with that?"

Hoyle tightened his grip on my shoulder until it stung. There was that look in his eyes again.

I felt in my guts that I was right. Our unit's commander was breathing down my neck to get those fly boys home. The war in Sin-cong was...unpopular, to put it lightly. Every time I turned the TV on back at base, all I saw were protestors gorging the streets. Or news that yet another National Republic official had been found embezzling funds across the wire. The same damned government we were propping up was working against us.

The enemy knew just how bad things were, too. They did everything they could to let the American people know how utterly and completely fucked things were here. No doubt their propaganda minister was already itching to send pictures of American pilots strung up in a torture camp to every major paper in the States. Washington was a pressure cooker. This could be the last thing it needed to set shit off.

If I screwed up this op, I could kiss my career goodbye.

Against my own judgement, I decided to hear Hoyle out.

"Goodwin isn't going to make it through another engagement." Curt whispered the truth, flat out. "He gets shot at again and he'll run. Or worse, panic and shoot one of us in the back. Its no good for any of us."

I bit back the string of curses I wanted to throw in doc's face before I finally relented. "Alright. I...I got an idea."

"What is it?"

"I'll stick Goodwin with second element. He can sit pretty in the IFV until the hard part's done." It wasn't ideal. I loathed to move our hammer out of position. If the enemy saw them rolling through the jungle before it was time to strike then we'd lose the element of surprise. Still, Hoyle had a point. This was the only way.

Curtis nodded his approval. I waved him off so I could make the call to the other half of the MSOT. "Frogger-2, Frogger-Actual, how do you read me?"

A second later, a familiar, charming twang came buzzing through the line. "Readin' you loud n' clear, Franky boy. What's the sitch?"

No comms discipline. Typical. A guy fights his whole career to become a big damned operator and suddenly forgets how to use a radio. No, he didn't forget. Not my lieutenant. He just thought he was too talented to follow the rules. "Rendezvous at point Juliett 1-2-4."

"Want us to bring the car around, boss?"

Hoyle rolled his eyes at me as I fought not to chuck my radio into the nearest tree. "Yes, Billy, I want you to 'bring the car around.' I need to transfer Frogger-4 to your element. Make room for a casualty."

"Oh." Billy's smile audibly died on the other end. "Who is it?"

"Frogger-3's down. We'll have him bagged before you get here."

At one time I made these post summaries and this spreadsheet, but admittedly working on them did slow my pace reading the IC by a lot.

It was super helpful, though! I remember going back through the spreadsheet a few times to check what characters were claimed.

Hey! I will not confirm nor deny any casualties.

Glad you guys liked the post! I went back and read through parts of UOU to try and get a feel for your voices for these characters. Felt like it was important to not just make them 'my' versions of the characters, if that makes sense.

The post used to have a significantly longer battle with more details, buuut it felt long winded and distracted from Wally's dilemma. Totally going to milk that fight for drama in later flashbacks, though, you fuckin' betcha

THE FLASH: New World

Ground Zero Metropolis

Metropolis burned. Bifurcated skyscrapers jutted into the sky like broken spears. Clouds of ash choked the air and stole the reprieve of daylight. Packs of flying monstrosities crossed a blackened sky. Blurs of supersonic jets soared past them. Missiles exploded among the pack, sending chunks of meat and alien cybernetics falling into the streets below. The swarm of parademons gave chase, too numerous to count.

A cracked globe sat in a crater in the middle of Broadway. All around it, the shells of burnt out cars filled the streets. Blood, debris and fire crept along the asphalt. A horrific stench clung to every surface. Terrible as the destruction might've been, Wally West looked past it. His eyes lingered on the dead. Bodies lay on every street corner. They sat in their cars, and in their homes, and behind walls they hoped would protect them.

'Dear God.'

He couldn't move. He stood stock still, a statue painted in red, black and gold. Wally looked down at his hands. These gloves didn't fit, he realized. They were too tight- meant for smaller hands. Dr. Wells had meant it for Iris before she...

A huge, winged shadow passed overhead. A moment's terror turned to relief when its bat-like shape became apparent. The Batwing landed with a heavy thud in a nearby street. Its rear ramp lowered. A shadowed form hidden behind a black cape descended. Batman scowled at Flash behind his sheer white lenses. Behind him, a young woman in white, pink and black spandex jogged off the plane and into the street.

"Jeez. And people say New York is a dump." Spider-Woman snorted.

Batman turned his silent scowl to her, and she quieted.

A giant of a woman left the plane last, ducking to avoid smacking her head against the roof. Clad in the armor of alien gods, she bore a mace crackling with the Power Cosmic. Big Barda paid neither of the mortals any mind as she marched out onto the street, eager for battle.

Wally could hear the others weren't far behind: the roar of a motorcycle fueled by hellfire echoed down the streets.

He was here, too.

"Flash." Superman called his name. He hovered overhead, cape fluttering in the ashen wind. He spoke with a calmness that boggled Wally's mind. Even with all the death- the destruction- surrounding him, Superman remained unshaken. Somehow he made the t-shirt and work boots look heroic. "Are you alright?"

"I, uh-" Wally choked on a nervous chuckle. "Just peachy, blue."

"Sorry." He shook his head, and he smiled. He smiled. "Wrong question. Are you hurt?"

Flash shook his head back.

"Good. We need you, pal. Keep your head in the game."

"Incoming!" Spider-Woman called out, her sixth sense tingling seconds ahead of danger.

Her warning was followed by an ear-shattering explosion. Dust and debris whipped up into the air as a boom tube opened in the middle of Broadway.

Both Wally and Superman turned toward it just in time to see-

"He's here! And right on schedule, too. Evil is nothing if not punctual."

A pair of energy beams exploded against Superman's chest. Black and crimson lightning crackled as it threatened to tear him apart atom by atom. Omega Beams. Everyone else Wally had ever seen take one of those hits had vaporized on the spot. Instead, Superman rocketed backwards through the remnants of the Daily Planet, vanishing from sight.

Barda leapt to action first. A battle cry ripped from her throat as she charged, weapon high: "You have no idea how long I've wanted this. I will wet my hands on your blood, tyrant. Murderer. Die!"

"Go for the eyes!" Batman growled, voice full of gravel and gravitas."Flash, you're on defense."

Spider-Woman followed his lead, swinging up and around with her webs to get behind their target. The two of them were already leaping into an action. Not a moment's hesitation despite the risk. Despite their relative fragility.

A blazing figure appeared astride a howling steel beast. Vigilante spun a pair of cursed revolvers out of his holsters and up into his hands. Gunshots rang out. Their toll was the sound of damnation. "Fall, damn ya! Fall!"

Wally slowly turned to face the source of the attack. His fingers dug into his palms. Panic blossomed in his chest. Memories of annihilation fell like a cloud over his mind.

A god cloaked in malevolence towered over him. Gray skin, craggy and cratered, stretched across a massive frame. Armor blue as midnight glinted with the glow of omega light. His eyes were the worst part. That malicious energy blazed in his eyes with a hunger for destruction Wally thought insatiable. They were a pair of yawning portals to a realm of endless suffering. They could never consume enough death to be fulfilled. They would not stop until everything and everyone Wally ever loved was dead.

Battle raged.

Wally could scarcely recall the details. He only knew it was grizzly.

And that they'd lost.

Barda knelt before Darkseid. Blood stained her raven black hair. It ran down her face in rivulets. The head of her mace lay broken several feet away. The haft still filled her hand, as if it would be any use now. She struggled back to her feet.

Nearby, Vigilante leaned over the fallen form of Batman. Though the ghostly rider's left arm was a mere stump now, he still had the strength to put himself between the Lord of Apokolips and the mangled man in the cowl.

The titan lifted a gauntleted fist. Trapped between his grotesque fingers was a white and pink hood.

"You don't scare me!" Spider-Woman shouted. "Lemme go so I can kick your ass!" She fought with all her strength to escape his grip: punching, kicking, biting at the hand around her skull. It held fast.

"Insect." Darkseid spoke. His voice did not ring out. His lips moved yet made no noise at all. Instead, the voice seemed to radiate from inside Wally's mind. Like a parasite, it slithered inside the meat of his brain. A silent, infectious thing, burrowing into his subconscious.

He squeezed, and Spider-Woman yelled out in pain. "I- could use some help here, guys!"

A storm approached from the sea. With it came harsh wind, rain, and thunder. Thunder boomed like drums played in the heavens. Lightning streaked across ash-blackened clouds. In that flash of light, a figure appeared. It- he- hung from the edge of a skyscraper, something wickedly sharp clutched in his hands. Lightning flashed again as the figure leapt into the open air, falling, and the storm fell with him.

"UXAS!" The King of Asgard bellowed with a hurricane force. "I HAVE COME FOR YOUR HEAD!"

"You flail in vain. Your defeat is inevitable, for..." Darkseid lifted his hostage high. With a mere click of his thumb, he could break the hero in twain.

"Flash, ya idgit, move! Grab 'er!"

"No- no, this isn't- Thor, wait- I can't-" Wally screamed until his throat went hoarse. He couldn't move. His legs were too heavy. His feet cast in iron. Every instinct in his body screamed at him to run."No!"

Thor knew the plan.

Járnbjörn fell with an executioner's stroke.

Danville Central City

He jolted awake. A layer of sweat slicked his forehead, yet he felt cold at the same time.

A silhouette stood over him. Rubbing his eyes with his knuckles, Wally's vision cleared. He saw a man with dirty blonde hair and an gentle if amused smile on his face. Barry Allen wore a long coat over a red sweater vest and a pair of khakis, like a combination of Colombo and a youth pastor. His arms were crossed over his chest.

"Bad dream?"

Wally just nodded, sitting up. Barry offered a cup of water which Wally graciously accepted, chugging down its contents with frightening speed. It was difficult to slow himself down enough for it to look mostly normal.

"So." Barry moved the blanket off the couch so he could drop into it beside the teenager. "What are you doing in my house? Not that you aren't allowed to come over. We love your company, of course. But Iris told me she screamed like a banshee when she came home last night and saw a man on our sofa."

It took all of his self-control not to shout Barry's name at the sight of him. There he was, Barry Allen, aunt Iris's best friend. Alive. Wally hadn't known him long before his murder, but he knew Iris had loved him deeply. Not that she ever had a chance to admit it.

Embarrassment blazed across Wally's cheeks. He threw his hands up in front of his eyes to hide his shame. "Oh, God, Barry, I'm so sorry. I just-"

Needed somewhere to sleep now that I'm trapped in another dimension. I tried to go home but I found another, altogether happier me sleeping in my bed. And instead of trying to explain to my hardass of a father that I was a superhero, I decided to break into your house and sleep on your couch instead. Sorry!

"Needed to get away from 'the colonel,' right?" Barry made a frightening pair of quotation marks with his fingers as he emphasized Rudolph West's rank. "I totally get it, man. Used to do the same thing when my old man was being a jerk. I just wish you'd called ahead."

Wally hung his head. "I should have, you're right. Sorry."

Then Barry hugged him. He hugged Wally. It took a moment for his brain to catch up with reality before he wrapped his own arms around the man and accepted it. Wally hadn't realized how starved for affection he was until he felt the warm embrace of...well, a stranger, really. The love and care in Allen's voice echoed people West would never see again. Before he realized it, he was crying.

"Wow. Okay." Barry breathed. "Are you sure you're alright? Do you want me to call Iris? If you need to talk to someone about your, ah, home life, we can-"

"No! Nope! I'm good!" Wally coughed, his tears turned to panic in a split second. "Just needed somewhere to crash. Hey, you know, I think I'm late for school-"

"-you've got a little while before-"

Wally pushed off Barry and stood abruptly, pretending to stretch. "Ahh, no, no. That's alright. Need to leave bright and early to catch the bus. Listen, Barry, I really appreciate this. Please don't tell my dad I was here. Or anyone, actually. Even me. Let's just not talk about this again, okay? Ever. Please."

"Okay, okay. You're welcome back for dinner!"

Without another word, Wally ran out of the front door. Golden lightning surrounded his body as he raced away.

Wally West is the nephew of Iris West, better known to the world as THE FLASH. Wally watched her die on national news when the Silver Surfer, the Herald of Darkseid, drove his fist through her heart. Boom tubes opened across the sky, and armies of parademons descended upon the world. The streets of Central City ran red.

Wally couldn't just stand by and watch the world end. He sought out Harrison Wells, a verifiable genius and Iris's former mentor. Wally had a plan. A stupid, dangerous plan. Dr. Wells stood strongly opposed to it even as he strapped Wally to the very same chair Iris West had sat in before her accident. Within the walls of StarLabs, West and Wells replicated the event down to the smallest possible detail.

It should've killed him. Instead, it connected him to the Speedforce. It transformed his every molecule into the perfect conduit for that cosmic power. Donning a version of his aunt's costume, Wally joined what heroes still lived in fighting for their world.

Superman. Spider-Woman. Thor. Big Barda. Vigilante. They were a strange, eclectic bunch, but they were earth's last line of defense. They were the JUSTICE LEAGUE.

They fought the good fight. Defeated the Herald, and brought the armies of darkness to their knees. But when Darkseid stepped down from his throne, the Justice League failed. Those that did not fall to the corruption of the Lord of Apokolips died at his hands. The Flash was the lone survivor of that fateful, final battle- because he ran. He was only a teenager then. A child thrown into an impossible situation and asked to rise to the challenge.

He didn't.

He ran.

Pain, sorrow and guilt rushed down to his very marrow. That cocktail of emotion fueled him as he ran and ran, gaining more speed than he could have possibly imagined. The Speedforce knew this was wrong. This was not the outcome ordained by fate. It carried Wally away. In a burst of impossible speed, it shunted him out of his doomed universe and into this one.

A shadow followed him through the Speedforce. It harrows his every step, taking the forms his guilty conscious most fears. It is judgement given form. It is death, black as midnight, and it will not rest until it finally catches up to him.

Here, in this new world, he's found a paradise. Everyone he once knew still lived and breathed. There was no alien conqueror looming on the horizon. It was a young earth full of heroes, full of potential. Wally knew this was his only chance to start over. He intends to make things right, if he can. To find those he hurt in his world and ensure they had a better future in this one.

I'm looking to apply for Wally West for a few reasons. Firstly, I wanted to write a second character that is as stark a contrast to Frank Castle as possible. Wally is young, joyful and driven to do genuine good. Even if his life is defined by tragedy, he strives to use his powers to help others. Its an archetype I enjoy, and I think Wally's quippy, lighthearted personality will be a nice break from the dourness of Punisher.

Secondly, I want to hearken back to one of my favorite runs from yesteryear, Sep's Iris West from Ultimate One. I really enjoyed his spin on the Flash mythos, and when I was mulling over how I wanted to play Wally, Sep's old run was the first thing that came to mind. Wally being the successor to that universe's Flash has a few advantages, in my opinion.

With Barry, his and Wally's relationship deepened when Wally became Barry's sidekick. Wally got to learn how to be the Flash by working side by side with Barry for years before donning in the costume. Here, though? Iris is dead and a world away. He bears the responsibility of legacy without having an experienced Flash to lean on. They're flesh and blood. Losing her impacted him to his core.

Since his arrival in our universe, Wally has tried to find a place for himself. He's desperate to make connections to this world's versions of his own family. There's one small problem, however: this world has its own Wally West. He's an ordinary high school senior preparing for university. Pretending to be this Wally so he can spend time with Iris and Barry has proved...challenging.

Finally posted! Took a while but I ended up being busy on Monday and then there ended up being a lot happening with the characters.

@Supermaxx Feel free to tell me if I should adjust or if you'd like me to just delete that section with Amanda Waller.

Edit: I did go ahead and edited Castile to Castle. I really do read too fast...

Appreciate the shout. I was planning to handle Waller's reaction myself, if that's alright. Have some ideas I'm cooking up that still need time in the oven.

I don't want to give the impression that I'm not looking for interaction in the future or anything. Having Manhunter and Castle cross paths makes sense with Waller as a shared antagonist.
