The man known as Xan

Hello there! You can call me Xanadu through originally on Old Guild I was known as Fa11ing Phoenix. I'm a University student that lives on the East Coast of North America studying History and Philosophy with aspirations of either becoming a History Professor or working in the Digital Humanities. I used to be really into forum based roleplaying when I was younger starting out on Neopets before moving to Max-Dan-Wiz and finally ending up on the Old Guild.

As I entered college though, I found it hard to find time to allocate time to writing posts when I have to write essays for grades and the like. Recently though, I've decided that for the sake of my own mental health that I have hobbies beyond work in an attempt to help keep myself sane. And thus I have returned with the expressed intent of continuing to do this weird collaborative writing experience that I love so much!

Hey look at that, there is a sheet up for Laine in the character tab. I'm putting some finishing touches on it, and probably going change some formatting things at some point. And I was very tired when I proof read it, so there is probably some mistakes in there. But it should give you all a general idea of what I'm looking for in the sheets. Maybe not to its extent in length, but in similar level of effort. Remember I need to see that you care people. And since we are getting a lot of interested I'm probably not going to be able to accept everybody. So you want to make that sheet, the best sheet you can. That's why I'm giving you a whole week to work on it. I don't want you to rush it.

And no you don't just get to pull a me and say accesses restricted for one of the sections. That's actually for plot reasons, and I have that part written out as well I just can't share it with you. Which makes me sad because it was the part I had the most fun with.

Anyway, to the people who have sent me PMs. I'm sorry, but finishing up Laine's sheet took me a little bit longer than expected. So I probably won't be able to respond to them until tomorrow at some point. Anyway keep on keepin on folks! ^_^
@Plank Sinatra
Ah yes the space stuff. So originally a lot of the stations were Mostly ISS-type research stations. But the Exchange kinda changed prospective for some people. They wanted sanctuary in a place where they could live without the threat of them getting nuked into oblivion the very next day. Because in the early years following the Exchange, a lot was still up in the air about if any form of government or authority would be able to bounce back or if you'd just have some angry rebel groups with accesses to nuclear weapons. Since it took some time for many of the world governments to either shatter completely or finally bow down to the corporations and let them bring back order. So they started to make space habits up in high orbit much like Freeside from the Sprawl trilogy. So in fact most are actually privately owned, though a few government installations still exist for the governments that manged to make it through the Exchange in one piece.

If on the ground the Corporations basically run everything except in name, up in space they got the name to. Cause these habits run on what's called "orbital law", which bascially breaks down to the owner of the space station decides what's legal and what's not. So these space stations tend to come in two flavors: Havens for the rich and prosperous to live out their days, or darker research stations where the corporations and the like do their experiments that polite society might "frown upon." Most end up combining the two.

Now some of these corporations are looking towards the Moon primarily for mining purposes. But to do that they need to be able to get goods into orbit much efficiently than using space ships. Commercial space flight is a thing, but it ain't cheap. Simard Industries, the guys that developed the first BICs and made billions of them are currently leading a charge. Having basically more or less carved out a large section of the Ecuadorian coast, where they are starting to build the foundations for what will eventually be a space elevator.

And I think that covers everything!

@Indy Cooper
I mean hey, not everybody can be good at shooting things! Variety is the spice of life

Though.... this Character who you will met tonight is 0826-9's handler and basically the person on Loingsech's payroll to make sure y'all don't fuck up is basically a tank with legs. So to each his or her own. lol

@Cairo
Now I'm just imagining him like hiding a shotgun inside of a baguette.
@Prisk
Eh, Guilty as charged in that regard. ^-^ The guilds seems to value uh.... what I'd call aesthetic presentation much more than the other sites I've ventured on throughout the years. So I kinda browsed around a bit through a bunch of old and new RPs and pick and chose what I thought worked from their respective presentations. Something something "good artists copy, great ones steal", though I'm not really sure about the validity of that statement.

But people say the OOC looks fine, so I guess it worked?

@Red Coil
It's an interesting idea you know? I mean, I mentioned the genetic engineering in the Int-Check, but I didn't think anybody would actually run with it. I'm interested where you take her!

@Cairo
Super corporate empire France is best France? Interesting that you went with making them a PMC state, but I like it it's different. You got a solid foundation going and I'll be interested to see how you expand on it!

@Mara
Well that idea isn't creepy, disturbing, tragic, and wonderful all rolled into a single ball! And don't feel too bad about using over-done tropes. They exist for a reason, it's really a matter of how you end up playing with them and subverting them!

@DeadDrop
I indeed received it in the cybermail. I'll probably be able to shoot some comments your way on it, a little bit later.

Final thing my schedule is a little bit weird, but I'll pop in when I can to check up on things and answer any questions. It might just be at seemingly strange intervals of time; uni does that to a person as most of you probably know. I'm aiming to get one of my uh, I guess you'd call them GM-NPC sheets up later tonight to give you guys an example of what you should be aiming in terms of sheet length and detail. Though, if you can't hit the mark exactly, it's fine because my sheets are known to be well sprawling at times. lol
@Cairo
Indeed we are! I'm not a first come, first serve type. The interest check is just there to see if I'd get any traction at all! Anybody can submit an application as long as its before the deadline! If you get accepted though that's a whole 'nother story, but we will cross that bridge when we get there! ^_^
@Mara
Noted! Generally, I feel that everybody is a fan of such things. Though, I'm gonna probably hold off making one until after sheets are accepted. Because than you might have people that don't get accepted in the Discord and that gets awkward and me being aggressively Canadian, I don't really want to deal with such things because then I feel bad. Et cetera et cetera. lol

That being said for all the peoples! I would like your votes on yay or nay on the creation of a Discord, cause I'm a kind dictator that likes to know the consensus of his people. So you can tell me here in the OOC, or like sneak it into your CS. Whatever works for you!

Applications are now closed! Give the GM some time to look everything over and make a final decision.

Ayy, you cool cats. With our Guild issues hopefully resolved for at least a moment of time, I've managed to get things up and running! To give everybody enough time to work on sheets and stuff. And to allow me to work out some finer details. CSs themselves will not be due until next Sunday February the 11th at 12:00 AM EST. That gives you all a little over a week to work on something, which I feel should be enough but if you feel like you need more just bring it up and we will see if we can't work something out. Anyway here have a link!

Chapter 1

“你想要一杯茶嗎?”

Laine nodded her head pointing toward the display. Silently watching the calloused hands of the tea vendor lift a battered kettle. An antiquated oddity amongst the various brands of instant-machines. A styrofoam cup was placed on the counter steam drifted upward into the morning air. Encapsulated within her hand, the tactile sensors flared up her augment sending a facsimile of warmth to processed within the brain.

She made her way out through the alleyway that the vendor was tucked into, and crossed South Horizon Drive towards Aberdeen Harbor. The water hidden beyond the massive nest of rising towers each connected with rising glass bridges. The buildings rising every upward to meet growing populations demands. A large garbage truck lumbered along its interior already filled with the early morning run. A group of young woman dressed in identical business attire walked on, by talking amongst themselves in Cantonese. On their way no doubt to catch one of the early buses to the mainland to get to work.

The water’s edge came quickly passed the towers. A small strip of sand and loose gravel that quickly faded away into the blue-green of the harbor. Laine sat down on this small barrier looking out over the water towards Pok Liu Chau, and Korea itself somewhere beyond that; grey clouds hanging on the horizon heavy with promises of rain. Cupping her tea in both hands, she drank, the warm bitterness of the green tea filling her senses. It was the quiet probably that she appreciated most. The roar of the city melted away, leaving only the wind and the far off sounds of the men out on their sampans.The process having slowly transmuted into her morning ritual over the past five years.

“Guess this is the last time then” She mused to herself, her own voice jarringly loud amongst the silence. She crushed the now empty cup in her hand, the styrofoam folding inward easily against the pressure of the robotic joints into a small and misshapen ball. With an easy throw, she chucked the ball into the waters beyond watching it for a moment, bobbing up and down in the water; a flash of white against the blue-green.

She rose, brushing the sand off of her the black of her pants legs. Following the same path from before, she turned to the left as she hit the road. Following it as it curved away from the housing developments and the commercial sector, hugging the coast in a south easterly direction. Here the design of the towering buildings became less extravagant and more utilitarian in their design. Their hard right angles and concrete frames arising like a mesa from the ground. An old sign covered in rust still protruded along the shoulder of the road, the faded letters reading: Emergency Redistribution Housing.

Subconsciously, as she crossed the invisible boundary where one world had ended and other began, Laine had turned on. Submerging herself fully into the surroundings of the area, taking in every little sign of life and movement. The sidewalk was stained with vomit and the air tinged with smoke. The remnants of a cardboard bed lay propped against one of the buildings. Up the street, a stray cat plodded across the cracked asphalt, matted hair clinging to its slender frame. It stopped and looked at Laine, contemplating her for a moment then sprinting into a nearby alleyway.

She stopped in front of one of the buildings that stretch far into the sky. Paint above the door frame had chipped away leaving only two partially completed words: de ar mt sto e. The exterior was covered in a mixture of grim and graffiti advertising local gangs. Empty voids cut into the walls stood where windows may once have been. Its tall frame blocking out the morning sun and casting the exterior out front in shadow, intensifying the coolness in the air as the breeze began to crescendo with the approaching storm. From a backpocket she pulled out a crumpled blue-red box labeled Беломорканал. Pulling one of the cigarettes from the box, she fished around in her other pocket for a lighter.

Five minutes later, a off-white BYD van came down the street. Its box shape moving with a surprising level of grace as the electric engine quietly purred. Laine looked up, as she flicked the husk of her cigarette to the ground, grinding it into the sidewalk with a black boot heel. The van was unmarked, but she knew it as one of Loingsech's fleet of vehicles. It carried the rest of her team, ferrying them from the opulent five star extravagance that was the Kinmokusei Hotel. Laine didn't trust them enough to make their way alone. Trust was something you earned, and that process took much longer than the two days they had.

As the van came to a stop, her posture straightened as she pulled herself up to her full height. Crossing her arms she waited as the automatic doors slid open.
