ROUND ONE: FIGHT!
Pit's opener was not any different from his last two matches. He was quick to pull his bow up and the string back, the sparkle of light forming between his fingertips and stretching out with the motion. Across the stone arena he could clearly see Nyotengu unfold herself to take on her fighting stance, a deceptively open posture with her feet wide apart, one arm lifted gracefully over her head and the other pushed out in front of her with her fan held flat side facing the angel. She was slow with the movement, he thought. She wouldn't know what hit her.
That was the plan, at least. Instead there was a deafening crack of thunder that echoed throughout the area, the sound bouncing off the rocky walls, and then suddenly there was a head of horns and auburn hair in Pit's face.
"I am the sexy and amazing Mighty Thunder, Kanna! I'm not losing to you or Nyotengu!" The oni cried out as she slammed both of her fists into the angel's chest at the same time. The light arrow evaporated as Pit's breath was forced out of his lungs and he went flying. Kanna's small frame belied her sheer strength, and it was good thing she hadn't aimed to throw Pit out of bounds and into the water because he would have already lost the round if she had. Pit hit the ground on the far side of the stage and bounced a couple times before the wall caught him. He shoved himself back onto his feet amid a fit of coughs.
"A-aren't you on the same side?!""A temporary alliance!" Kanna called back to Pit even as she leapt away from the stage and landed back on the outskirts on Nyotengu's side. Or rather the side the yokai princess had just been on - she was intent on keeping up Kanna's initiative and had advanced after her kameo partner, sleek, dark wings bringing her down towards Pit with a heavy two-legged stomp. The angel rolled to his right to avoid it, but it wasn't far enough to dodge the kick Nyotengu pivoted into. Her geta caught him on the chin as he popped back up. He reeled for a moment, muscles tense with the expectation of the tengu's follow up attacks - which did not come.
Pit raised his guard as soon as he recovered, squinting his eyes suspiciously at Nyotengu. The woman was idly fanning herself as she looked down at him. "Don't be shy, now~"
Her posture was back to being loose and casual save for her wings; Pit could read her real mood in those feathered limbs alone. They were spread wide at either side of her, her flight feathers splayed out and curled just slightly in towards her.
Come at me already! they said. An invitation. Was she seriously taunting him right now?
"Haha...!" It definitely worked to get Pit pumped up again after being put so thoroughly on the back foot. He held his bow in front of him and made a show of disconnecting the two halves, spinning the dual blades in his hands before snapping them into their mirrored forward and reverse grips.
"I hope that's not all you got!"Nyotengu's eyes twinkled as she took her stance once more.
A fighting aficionado through and through, came Palutena's voice in her angel's head.
The Princess of Tengu... a rare female of their species. She is proud and vicious, and a lot stronger than she looks.Yeah, I could tell - her partner too!Oni are renowned for their super power. Don't let either of them get anymore clean hits in or even you will be walking out of here with worse than just bruises! Both Nyotengu and Kanna are more than a thousand years old—Whoa, that's older than me!—and have plenty of fighting experience. They're going to be tough opponents. Watch out for Nyotengu's wind in particular!Got it!Her mastery of wind was something that Sareena had warned he and Ashrah about as well. If they could bait that power out it would give Pit and his partner the chance to test their information out.
Pit rushed forward with his blades at the ready, not disappointed when Nyotengu stepped in to meet his charge. She parried his first slash with her fan, and the second with a spin that slammed her outer forearm against Pit's inner to throw off his course. She pressed but the angel moved with her direction, a counter spin that connected a high lateral slash that ripped across Nyotengu's collarbone. Pit continued with another, lower swipe the opposite way with his other sword across her torso, though his opponent didn't miss a beat as she raised her free hand and brought her fist down in a hammer-like strike to disrupt Pit's flow. He caught it with the flat of his blade, though the impact was solid enough to send a ripple from the weapon out through the tips of his feathers. A positively wicked smile came over Nyotengu's face when she noticed the angel's shudder, and she drew back her fist for another go.
Their close quarters scuffle was intense, though it was mostly glancing blows from the start. Pit's twin swords were swift and could bite deep, but Nyotengu doggedly parried what she could and powered through the rest that made contact. On the flip side, the yokai princess struck with heavy yet graceful movements, making the timing tricky to see which made Pit slower to dodge or deflect them than he otherwise would be. As their dance continued though, it began to look like Pit would gain the upper hand. He, too, was tougher and packed more of a punch than his looks suggested, and on top of that he was faster than his opponent. His slashes became sharper, cut deeper, and when the audience of the princess' followers realized it they began to jeer.
Hearing their cries Nyotengu smirked, striking with a knee that forced Pit backward a little. Balancing on the one leg while keeping the other raised she leaned away, preparing a forceful attack with a wind up not unlike the movements of a kabuki actor.
Too late, though.
"Not so fast!" Pit busted out the Upperdash Arm suddenly to get the quicker advantage, slamming the weapon into Nyotengu and sending her careening past the hot springs and towards the water that flowed through the Pools in general. She wasn't even close to landing in the drink when she spread her wings and righted herself, getting up higher with a few flaps. She stayed in the airborne for a few moments, pushing strands of hair that had come loose out of her face and looking down at Pit with a hint of amusement.
I won't be able to ring her out. It had been his preference the last two matches, but he could tell her wings were stronger than Omen's; forcing a fight in the air to dunk her wouldn't work. So instead Pit hopped backwards, giving the tengu plenty of space to land back on the stage. He lifted one sword and pointed it at her with a grin.
"You're not done yet, are you? Come on!""So forward!" Nyotengu laughed. She spun upward, then at the apex of her movement she beat her wings hard and shot at Pit like a falling star. Or maybe more like a wrecking ball, given she had more power than speed. "Try to keep up!"
She slammed into the ground feet first, cracking the stone beneath her geta. The bells attached to her footwear rung erratically, but they did not toll Pit's defeat. He'd jumped out of the way and hung loosely in the air himself to avoid any potential shock waves before darting in with a stab from his reversed blade. The sword brushed Nyotengu's side with a shallow cut as she moved to dodge - and it was then for the first time in this match that Pit signaled his partner.
It was a subtle movement of his wing, something that might have gone unnoticed by most people. Nyotengu, however, bearing wings herself was attentive to those of her opponent's. She read the beckoning motion and twisted, swinging her fan out behind her. Following it was a heavy gust of wind that was powerful enough to sweep Ashrah away before her surprise attack connected.
This was it! Her wind! Based on Sareena's warnings there was a brief window of time after that power that they could exploit, and Pit wasn't going to let it pass by.
He lunged, landing a cross slash with the two swords that finally drew a reaction from the woman. She let out a shrill little noise of pain and spun around again, swinging her arm in an attempt to clothesline the angel. He ducked under her fist and got a clear look at her face - she was delighted.
She was also preparing to sweep Pit's legs out from under him. This close they could get into another furious exchange, but Pit took the chance to go for a grab. He pressed the bow halves together and took hold of Nyotengu at the waist, forcing her to the ground and raising the blade to finish the move.
"Ah ah ah~!"
Nyotengu playfully chastised his choice, wrapping her legs around Pit and using her mastery of the formidable Tengu-do style to expertly swap their positions. Pit yelped as he found his own back pressed to the stone floor. The tables were turned and Nyotengu sat straddled above him, her empty hand lifted high into the air. She brought it down with a crack against Pit's face - and then again, back hand this time. Then again.
"Heeeeey! Let me have a go!" Kanna shouted from the side lines, but her partner just laughed at her.
"Not a chance! I'm enjoying this!"
Pit did not remain dazed for long. Spurred on by a dreadful feeling of deja vu he bucked, putting Nyotengu off balance, and then surged up to slam his head into hers. She reeled back with a grunt, just enough for Pit to shift and kick her off. He rolled to his feet as Nyotengu took to the air, breathing hard to catch his breath.
"Pit!" Ashrah called, and he glanced her way to catch her gaze. He gave her small nod and looked back at Nyotengu.
"I'm not finished yet either!""Good!" the princess said. She brought her fan up, swirling it around below her and then raising it in a swift, sharp motion. A gale blew up from the ground, sweeping Pit up into the air to join her. "Let's play up here then! We should have done this from the start."
They locked proverbial horns just below the height of the high ceiling, their flurry less intense than the one they'd had on the ground as they flitted around each other using the extra dimension that flight provided them. Of course one couldn't truly fly, but he paid no mind to that as he swiped out with the bow blade at Nyotengu.
"No one's gonna beat me in an air battle!""I wouldn't be so sure of that...!"
Nyotengu actually was the superior fighter in the air, though Pit held his own until the stamina in his wings ran out, a mild shock of pain like a cramp shooting through the muscle in one of them as he fell like a stone from the air. Nyotengu's next attack whiffed so unexpectedly that she couldn't keep the look of bewilderment from her face. It was the first time during the round that she was wide open - and Pit would have been a poor excuse for a fighter himself if he let that go unpunished.
He couldn't reach her directly anymore, but the great thing about using a bow was that he never needed to be up close to take out his opponents. In almost an instant his bow was aimed and a light arrow was charging power as he fell. It hit peak strength before Pit hit the ground, striking Nyotengu in the center of her chest. She flinched from the power shot, in danger of falling out of the air herself. Which was when Pit called in his back up to make sure she did.
"Ashrah!"The demon leapt as soon as Pit opened his mouth, her sword striking true this time. Nyotengu hurtled towards the ground as Pit got to his feet. He spun his bow to generate more force and then met Nyotengu with the blade, a final strike that used the yokai's falling speed as part of its own power. The slash connected and Nyotengu was thrown to the ground, her energy depleted and consciousness drifting in and out.
Pit, who'd been holding his breath, let it all out at once with a big whoosh of a sigh. He glanced over at the Heavenly Principles' timer above them in the center of the stage; there had only been a few seconds left in the round. That was a close one.
