One Piece: The Blackfin Chronicles

“Ma’am, I’m just the doctor,” Jones responded to her in a polite tone, “if you let me work, your husband’s arm will heal. Otherwise, he’ll probably be crippled for life. If you wish to complain, you can talk to Claire.” The doctor glanced over at the fat man to indicate who he meant. “But I would advise against that. As long as you cooperate, you and your husband should be fine...hopefully.” He then resumed his work without waiting for a response.

Meanwhile, Carl’s attention was focused more on the matter of rib roast. “Rib roast? You ate ALL of my rib roast?!” If looks could kill, the Belessian woman would be dead. He walked over towards the lady. “It looks like I need to teach you some manners!” he yelled, throwing his fist at the lady while the other pirates (minus the doctor) raised their weapons, ready to fight if needed.

Walking up to the tavern with the other pirates, Galen Jones reflected on what was about to happen. He never liked this part of the job. Raiding was so unnecessary, especially for a crew as notable as the one he was in. Even though they were only a subordinate crew of the Marquis, the Redwell Pirates were still a well-known force. Why not just send one guy to negotiate? It would prevent a lot of lost lives on both sides and it could enable the pirates to get more money. Then again, a guy like the Marquis wouldn’t do what he did if he cared about preserving lives. His thoughts were interrupted though.

“Hey Jones! Jones, you son of a bitch! Pay attention!”

A big, hairy fat man whose only clothing was a pair of pants was yelling at Jones now.

“Oh, what now, Claire? Your yelling’s giving me a headache!” Jones said, wincing his head and rubbing his forehead.

“It’s Carl! Say my name right or I’ll punch you!” Carl jabbed with his fists like a boxer to illustrate his point.

“Nah,” Jones responded, “and as I love telling you, we have a lot of muscle in our crew, but only a few doctors. If you do so much as touch me, the captain will kill you faster than you can say ‘One Piece.’”

“Yeah, well...shut up! We’re almost here,” the fat man said, turning to the force that was assembled under his command, “these people are all in their tavern. I’m hungry, so let’s get our money and get our food. Got it?!”

Without even waiting for a response from the pirates, Carl punched the door, forcing it wide open despite the fact that there were tables and chairs there. Walking in with the pirates, the fat man yelled “okay, we want food! ...and your money. Give us what you got, or I’ll do this!” He then grabbed the arm of a nearby man and crushed it in his hand, then threw the guy to the floor.

Before anyone could do anything else, Jones ran to the man and started making an improvised cast for him using some towels that were nearby.

“Sorry about all of this,” he said with irritation, “Claire’s an idiot.”

Name: Galen X. Jones
Gender: Male
Age: 19
Species: Human
Height: 5’9”
Weight: 160 pounds
Appearance: Jones has black hair, blue eyes, and white skin. He wears a white doctor’s jacket (because he can), but it usually isn’t buttoned and he has a blue t-shirt on underneath. Jones also wears shorts and a plain pair of shoes. He also wears a brown fedora (which always seems to come back to him no matter what happens) and usually has his duffel bag filled with medical tools and other items near him in case something happens.
Devil Fruit(if any): None (calling dibs on the Mera Mera no Mi for later though :-P)
Weapons: Various medical equipment and improvised tools he uses as medical equipment, if that counts. I guess he could stab someone with his scalpel or something. He also some ingredients that he uses in his treatments along with miscellaneous items that he keeps around in a duffel bag “just in case.” Strangely enough, “just in case” usually ends up happening.
Skills:

Medicine: Jones is a self-taught doctor. His medical techniques aren’t always conventional and can result in pain for the patient, but they usually end up alive at the end.

Improvising: living on a remote island and having to teach himself medicine really gave Jones a talent for creating solutions with whatever was around. This extends to creating medicine, knowledge of plants, and so on.

Background:

Jones grew up in a small town on a small island in East Blue. It wasn’t the wealthiest of places, but the people there were happy. It was pretty far away from the main hubs of East Blue, so not many people went there. This was fine for the residents until the island’s doctor passed away; now they were without convenient medical care and the islanders were too poor to pay high wages to attract another doctor to their town.

Sailing to a place with medical care usually wasn’t an issue, until one day Galen’s little brother got stricken by a terrible disease. By the time his parents were able to bring him to a doctor, he had already died. Galen was angry that he was unable to do anything about it and felt like he needed to do something, anything that he could. He decided on that day to teach himself medicine so that nobody else would suffer the fate his brother did. Being 13, it never occurred to him that this might be hard or that he might not be able to do it. Instead, using the books and tools left behind by the old doctor, Jones taught himself medicine. Some of his techniques are less than conventional, but he usually gets good results.

He probably would have lived out his days as the island’s doctor if not for a certain incident. One day, a notorious pirate crew sailed into the town. They were seriously weakened from a battle they had fought with the government, so the village could’ve fought them off, but they weren’t there for plunder: the captain’s son was seriously ill. Jones could have refused them medical care since they were pirates, but after some thinking and introspection, he felt like he couldn’t do that. They also offered him a pretty good payment for this treatment, which helped influence his decision as well. Let’s just say there’s a reason the new medical clinic on the island was built shortly after that.

Of course, after this Galen could no longer live a simple life, so he took up piracy almost by default. Doctors are usually in demand, so even without too much skill in combat he had no trouble finding different crews to join. Even so, he has yet to find the one crew he feels like he could stay with for the long term. He knows that he enjoys helping people and wants to become a great doctor, but unlike many pirates Jones doesn’t quite know what else he should do with his life right now.

@Blackstripe Maybe I didn't make it obvious enough in the CS, but my character didn't really jump into piracy. He helped a pirate because he felt he couldn't let them die, which kind of led him down that path by default because the government isn't exactly fond of people who help pirates. It's kind of like how Zoro became a pirate because Luffy saved him. I thought it'd make for a good backstory.

Also, I can tweak his backstory a bit if needed depending on when you want me to jump into the roleplay. I made the last part of it a little vague because I didn't know when he would be coming into the roleplay.

@Prewiga Sounds good. @Blackstripe I'm mentioning you since I am posting the CS here, although it's technically a draft since I don't know the guy's name yet. Maybe I'll research famous doctors and use one or more of their names like a One Piece character. I like that concept actually, so I'll have to research that tomorrow. Here's the CS so you can look over it now, (X = a placeholder for the guy's name) so let me know if any changes are needed. I need sleep though since it's late, so I'm going to bed.

Edit: twisting normal words also sounds good. Again though, I'll think about it more tomorrow. Thanks!

On the plus side, my CS is mostly done. The minus side is that I am terrible at thinking of names for characters. Does anyone know where I could go to get some ideas?

@PrewigaYeah, but why would someone do that experiment when you have a means of becoming an animal hybrid at will? It kind of seems like a waste of resources, right? Caesar Clown wanted to make artificial Devil Fruits, for example, not splice people with animal parts, since it would be inferior to what was already available.

Also, are there going to be any "normalish" people my character can pick up in the blues besides Taimi? Because so far, the most normal person has been the kid super genius in the robo-barrel. :P

Not EVERY Strawhat was super-weird. In fact, only Chopper, Franky and Brook could be said to fit that. Where's the Zoro, Sanji, Ussop and Nami?

@Rin Your character reminds me of the one barrel/treasure chest guy who shows up really early in the One Piece story and also Franky (because of the mechanical aspects). She's very interesting, I look forward to seeing her in the roleplay.

Also, guys...I'm okay with like ONE character being a young teen, but I don't want to end up with a crew full of them. My character is eighteen, but that doesn't mean she's a babysitter. :P

So yes, ONE character can be like Chopper's age or something, and since Rin was the one who had that idea first, she gets dibs.

Just for clarification, do you want a large range of ages or do you not care if there's a bunch of young adults or something?

If it matters, my doctor will probably be 19.
