Sweet, quick question(s) though. Can a single creature give out multiple marks, as in mark a family or village?

And do the creatures have any level of magic? Perhaps necromancy or illusion etc?

I hadn't thought of that. I think it would be best to have the rule that a Nightkin can only Mark one person at a time. If the person is killed/unmarked in some fashion, then they can Mark another.

Yes, the Nightkin have magic. Most of it would be their typical supernatural abilities--vampires can use eye contact to hypnotize, fairies might use an elf-arrow to put someone into a magical sleep, a spriggan can disguise itself as a tree. Some of them that are more powerful or more closely tied to magic, like true Witches (as opposed to human women who are just misunderstood herbalists) and demons, could do other things like divination or curses.

Bam! Best character coming in.

Name: Malkai
Age/Gender: 31/Male

Appearance:

Personality: Malkai is a strong-willed individual with his own code of honor. Often stubborn and determined, but also naive and petty. Malkai can be a kind man who will come to the aid of others without cause or reason, but he's also quick to anger and slow to calm. While he doesn't consider himself such, he often acts out of idealistic heroic notions, risking life and limb for himself or others for no reason other than that the person is in trouble, or whoever is causing them trouble is wrong for doing so. Not that he isn't pragmatic and selfish; while he may be kind he is not generous, and does not give his belongings freely. He involves himself in the affairs of others regardless of their wishes, often getting in the way of things which he has no business to be in. Malkai has no issues with stealing from the poor or the rich, young or old, needy or not. While his actions may result in some good, he himself is not a good person, as he'll lie, cheat, and steal as it suits him, and at the same time defend someone's honor and put a stop to more vile villains on principle or simply because he wants to. He can easily chose not to if he so desires.

Backstory: Malkai was born beyond The Grinds, in a land known as the Planescape. A land of wild nature and powerful monsters, were mortal men lived transient live styles, forced to either flee from the beasts or become the monsters themselves. They were called the Kharnates, who were excellent beast tamers and could often turn a simple metal pot into workable piece of armor, and one Kharnate could take on an entire company of men.

Of course this was rumor and hearsay, and Malkai himself wouldn't know the truth of it. He was only a babe when his father left the Kharnate and ventured through the Grind, living as travelers and occasionally mercenaries. The reasons were simple enough: His father was marked by a demonic creature known as a Succubus. These devilish women prey on men's base desire for sex, but use that desire to sire more of their own and to eat the souls of mortals. The succubus sought Malkai's father specifically because he and his ancestors have had a long history of being preyed upon by this specific demon, and some would even say that she is an ancestor to Malkai as well.

Malkai's father was caught by the demon when he was eleven years old. He and his father had returned from a bloody battle, where his father had lost a leg due to arrow infections. He was hallucinating and in his dying moments, thought back to more pleasant times with his wife, who died while birthing Malkai. It was then that the succubus attacked, taking on the illusion of Malkai's mother to elope with his dying father, impregnating the demon as well as absorbing his father's soul. Malkai did not discover that this happened until it was too late, when he walked into the tent and saw the demon straddling his father's lifeless corpse. He didn't even have time to scream when the demon pounced him and put her brand at the base of Malkai's crotch. When he was older and more of a man, he too would be sought after by the demon, and his future would be abruptly taken from him for the pleasure of the she-demon.

Since his father's death Malkai knew to do very little beyond fight and run, and he did more running than fighting. He ran into the forest hoping that perhaps he would get eaten by a monster or wild animal, to die quickly before letting the demon toy with his body and soul. But instead of finding despair, he found a friend. A little pup, sucking from the teat of his slain mother. The dog was barely larger than Malkai's own hand, and yet there was a certain kinship with the pathetic beast. They both were survivors of a violent tragedy. Perhaps together, they could survive their brutally short future.

With the pup in tow, Malkai roamed the lands. He raised the dog, which he named Pup, to protect and hunt with him. Together they roamed the Shadowed Vale, facing men and beasts together, growing stronger and richer each battle. But little did he know, Malkai's growth and success were being watched by the very same demon that slew his father. And soon he'd discover that the strength that carried him so far won't be enough to defeat this demon...

Equipment:

Theme:

Other: Malkai is illiterate, though he knows how to do some math, such as multiplication and division. While not famous, he's fairly well known outside of Valeton, at least if you're a mercenary or tribal. Whether or not it's good or bad depends on who's asking, as he has made as many allies as he's made enemies. He is something of a criminal due to engaging in acts of thievery, burglary, robbery, and at least one confirmed murder of a caravan guardsman. Has not actually been in Valeton, though he knows where it is.

I'm very interested in this RP but I'd like to create something might be a bit op in terms of player v creature combat aptitude.

I'm thinking of a character that seeks out the creatures of the night that have either marked him or others in order to kill and harvest their remains in order to create concoctions or items that he'd then use or sell/give to other players to aid them in their quests. The type of supporting character that can bridge the gap in power between the monsters and the players. Sort of like blacksmiths of The monster hunter game franchise.

To an extent of course and with your approval over the things I'd create. Players could come to me with the things they've killed over the course of their quests and I could make them new items, armor, weapons, etc.

Maybe like an in-game shop?

@Lucius Cypher
If possible, could I get some more info about the Planescape and the Kharnate? His backstory's fine and I don't really have a problem with anything aside from maybe the mushrooms--I'd like to be sure that he can't use them to just beast through everything in his way--but I like the ideas about the tribals/wildmen and some of their similarities to Mongols (from my perspective anyway). Otherwise he's accepted.

@Loco
On one hand, as a Monster Hunter fan, I'm into things like this in games. But on the other hand, as bleak as this world is and as strongly as magic is linked with the Night, I think the materials you would be using from the monsters might be too tainted, both literally and in the eyes of the setting's society, to really use such an idea. A weapon made from the bones of foul beasts would probably be seen as demonic in its own right, even if it didn't contain the essence of the creature it was made from; and other things might be too outright poisonous or corruptive to be handled by humans.

I'm pretty strongly on the fence on it. Do you have any ideas or examples of the items you planned on creating?

OOC should be up in just a bit, soon as I finish dinner.

Fo sho. I'm working on them right now, and they're sort of a mix of mongols and highlanders. As for the mushrooms they essentially enable his "Rage", and while he has a few they don't grow native to the area and taking more than one weakens the effect. He only has three to start with, so he would only use it in a situation that is dire, like being outnumbered or facing off against a powerful animal (Or even the succubus herself). Though if you don't mind I'd also like to take some liberties writing about the tribals of the Shadow Vale, who are unrelated to the Plaanescape or Kharnate (Though some have origins from there). They're more like the orks from Warhammer, albeit civilized enough to not kill everyone on sight.

Alright, that should be fine then. As for the tribals, would you mind terribly if they're a pretty rare sight away from the borders of the kingdom and are considered "savages" that are routinely "driven away from our lands" and such by the knights of this as-yet-unnamed kingdom that the Vale is part of?

I suppose I could, though I should warn you that they're only savage in the sense that they don't live in or near the city. As far as culture and technology goes they're actually quite advanced in their own ways, capable of creating a smokeless fuel that allows them to make fires within confined areas and one of their major religion revolves around fire. And trust me, they're quite good at using it. That being said they aren't exactly peaceful so the knights have some good reason to drive off the violent fire-throwing barbarians, but it'd be unfair to consider the violent lot to accurately represent their entire civilization.

I'll PM you the details once I have them hashed out.

Well my original idea was to create a character that had an unhealthy obsession with the pale mist lady.

Then I thought this guy was trying to purposely get himself marked. He be a supremely paranoid guy. He'd study how people got marked and interview them about it. He'd engineer methods of ways to avoid being marked by anything else. If he were to get marked, I'd imagine he'd be furious about it. However because he knows the basics of being marked he'd know that they'd come to him. Then he would viciously kill them. Like how dare they try to take him from from the object of his love and obsession? HOW DARE THEY!!?

But then I thought that might be boring so I had a different idea. What do you think?

Having a Mark is akin to being a target of the Nightkin, and it sounds more like your idea would befit a cultist of some sort, or someone who just wanted to become part of the Night. I wasn't really planning on letting people play as the creatures of the Night--vampires, werewolves, witches, etc--because even though they may still look and act human, they are deeply twisted and most certainly evil, even if they don't think they are in their own heads. It's not a Twilight situation where it's just a helping of superpowers with some ridiculous angst to attempt justifying it. This setting is more akin to the horror stories of the middle ages where people sold their souls and never came out the better for it, no matter what they attempted.

So I don't really think being obsessed with the Nightkin would be something you'd want to do. If any townspeople found out they'd burn him as a witch, if he offered himself to the Nightkin he'd either be killed or turned into a monster, so on and so forth. It doesn't really sound like a fun time to me.

If you're really really interested in playing it from that angle, though, you could PM me and we'll discuss it.

Yo, expressing interest in this! Love the idea of a somber and hardcore dark fantasy story. I'll try to hit up the OOC later today and present a CS - otherwise, here's another bump in hopes of getting other recruits! :)
