Still though, GMOs may save human civilization from becoming Fallout.

The modern world as we know it would still be fucked though as the sole super power of the world becomes Brazil by default.

I still haven't seen Saw.

Yeah, I'm behind on some stuff.

It's fine, I haven't either.

You're not missing anything, Saw is trash. Those films rely on our revulsion towards dirt/infection far too much. It just ends up making them look ugly.

Saw as a whole is pretty iffy. I don't like it personally.

Though I would recommend just watching Saw 1. It was supposed to be a standalone anyway.

@KnightShade I dunno, I think Saw and even a bit of Saw 2 had a bit of more clever writing and good shots then most horror films would. I can see why they got as popular as they did...despite going off the fucking rails. It's kind of like final destination, I think it put more effort than a lot of horror film's I've seen. But horror films, aren't usually masterpieces whatsoever. And the ones people call masterpieces their usually pretentious pieces of hot garbage.

I think if one enjoyed horror, to give those movies a try. But pretty much aside from a couple okay thrillers. There's not many -good- horror movies. Unless you like the "so bad, it's good" variety like Sharknado.

I disliked all the saws. Just seemed like gross-out movies. I'm not a fan of movies where bodily harm is the primary plot point.

There are loads of good horror films out there, modern horror just has such a consistent feel that it tends to blot out the good ones. James Wan played no small part in creating that feel too. Here's some modern and recent ones off the top of my head:

The Descent, Orphan, We Are What We Are, The Neon Demon, The Witch, Don't Breathe, Let the Right One In, The Host (Korean one), The House of the Devil, Get Out, Hush, May, Dog Soldiers, A Tale of Two Sisters, Kill List, The Babadook.

There's also plenty of non-pretentious classics. Primarily: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Alien, Nosferatu, Halloween and Peeping Tom.

There's even a few good 'torture porn' films out there. The Loved Ones is the best I've seen, it's a million times more fun than Saw.

@KnightShade The descent was another good movie. Let the right one in was alright. But, Don't breathe, was um...well there was a particular scene that I could instantly
But yeah that movie was really dumb. Even my friend (who likes super cheesy horror movies and bad movies in general usually.) who wanted to see the movie in theaters, ended up disliking it in the end. Granted had decent actors and one damn good trailer, but yeah...

There's several movies that are SUPPOSE to be really good horror films, but if you actually listen to the plot outside of them, it sounds, really, really stupid. (this is how I've been told.) Like...

So yeah, it sort of makes me not want bother watching some of them. Doesn't help that a lot of horror films, like Unfriended get actually good or okay reviews, and it's one of the worst movies that's been released. Like don't get me wrong, I'm not my roommate. I don't outright dislike horror movies. Just find the recent ones to be, very pretentious or a dumpster fire.

Based on your earlier list and what you've said here, I'm assuming you've not seen Get Out, The Babadook and It Follows. So the main contact you've had with them is this reductionist version of the plot you've been told, which completely ignores the way in which it is told. The most stupid sounding plot in the world can be told engagingly. I strongly disliked It Follows but I disliked it because of how the story was told. They tried to copy John Carpenter but forgot that he advanced the plot at the same time as building atmosphere, it ended up kind of limp and purposeless.

I'd never defend Unfriended either, I couldn't even be bothered to watch it all the way through. But dismissing the whole modern genre based on it seems a bit thin. Hollywood will continue to put out lots of cheap jump scares while there's loads of decent foreign imports out there.

Didn't see the mention because you didn't put the [ ] in it. xP

I think you're correct in that, a dumb plot can become engaging enough if written well enough. Like a good joke told poorly won't work as well as a bad joke told well. But make no mistake, it's still a bad joke...Granted, maybe it's bad of me to write off a movie without giving it a fair shake. But I'm a cynic, so it happens. Somethings can be so stupid on their own, that it just seems like it would be impossible to get over.

Like what my older brother told me about Attack On Titan. Which basically ruined any possible entertainment I could get out of it. :I

I don't/wasn't trying to dismiss the entire genre, like I said. I do enjoy some horror movies. I'm just one of those people that once spoiled to something, it can ruin an experience of watching it. And all the hype that comes from almost every horror movie that comes out, when most of them are the cheapest to produce and it usually shows. (and because I've never actually gotten scared at the horror film. "its good because it scary" has never worked as an argument for me.) It almost sets itself up for disappointment.

Oops, didn't realise I'd done that xD

I'm sort of an optimist, I tend to focus on a movies strengths to the exclusion of weaknesses, that might explain some of our disagreements. I'm also very defensive of the horror genre in general, I get sucked in just to the enjoyable degree of getting scared at a good horror film. I write over intellectualising reviews for a horror site too, so I can enjoy the pretentious thematic stuff a lot.

@KnightShade It's kay. :3

Well yeah, that scene I suppose is a bit more realistic to how someone would act in the situation. If they went nuts. But I can see your point and agree. You can forgive a movie's inconsistencies, because they ALL have them. If it sucks you in, you won't notice as many. And I'll admit I'm not very forgiving of most movies. :P

It is my personal feelings, but the third act made it collapse for me. I'm not my roommate per say, where ending always ruin a film if not up to par. Because I like anime. (and they can never get their endings straight.) xP Just felt like an ending that was thrown together.

Well I haven't seen Deliverance, so wouldn't know. ;P But I don't think it was because it was out of nowhere, but just the scene and how it was shot and conveyed felt super cheesy...

Change the third act. I do think that could of drastically made the movie better. But that's all opinion on my part. XP Haven't watched either of those yet. Honestly I think I'm just surprised how much my one friend didn't like Don't Breathe...since he seems to enjoy far worse horrors movies than I do on a consistent basis. *shrugs* Different strokes, different folks.

And honestly, I didn't hate Frozen when I watched it on T.V. either. (My tastes aren't perfect either. Just a glance of what I think is enjoyable music could prove that. :P) But YMS/Adam's review for it is hilarious and I'd recommend watching it all anyway. Link'd ya to the first part. ;P (The beginning is a play on a joke from his review of Disney's Frozen.)

As for Attack On Titan, good luck. One particular episode of the 2nd season of the anime that didn't help either, because it was another scene I couldn't tell if it was suppose to be funny or not and the characters we're so unbelievably stupid, that it had to have taken a grade A narcissistic to write the scene the way he did. (actually alot of scenes in that episode were dumb. But only one made me and roommate burst out laughing at a character's death.) I already saw how much attack on titan with trains, turned into a literal trainwreck, so I feel like since that's all their is to the "big secret". I feel like my time is better spent on different shows. But I can admire, the 'no drop master race'. Hopefully it's at least entertaining. XP

Well this month has been shit for a number of reasons and I've been feeling pretty crappy. But I guess the best thing, is I've at least been losing weight. 40 pounds in two months ain't nothing to sneeze at. Pretty much the only time I've ever had my parents encourage me in my lifetime. So hopefully, I can continue that trend. Hopefully my roommate won't have too many added complications with what's happening with him. Next month I should be able to maybe actually spend some time with friends, buy everything that broke this month and have less to worry about. I'll see what happens...
