Raphael smiled again. ”I appreciate the offer, however as you can see.” He said motioning to draw the woman's attention the canine bouncing around him excitedly. ”She really wants to play. Maybe later?” Rafe offered attempting to sound sincere as he turned down the third offer for stress relief he’d received since sending the scouts to find doc.

Guiding Athena on Raphael smiled a farewell and hid his sigh of relief. He finally got accurate directions to Jain’s location from one of the few men in the town; The previous directions he’d received were to to a young woman's residence. Afterwards the scout started teasing Athena with a tennis ball to get her excited; providing the perfect excuse to politely turn down invitations.

Locating the shed that had been repurposed into Jain’s hospital room Rafe finally handed Theena the tennis ball. He rapped the door jam as he opened the door, and froze. Athena chewing happily on her tennis ball also froze at the sight; She recovered faster than her companion. Moving into the room she moved to Jain’s hand; And started pushing her slobber covered tennis ball into the commander's hand.

Raphael shook his head, and decided to pretend not to see anything. “So I’m guess the bad news reached you before I did.” He started addressing the room at large so as to point the attention away from Jain’s tears. ”Some potential good news is the Marksmen think they injured the leader of that little group we encountered and are following his trail.”

“They plan to bring him back alive.” Rafe shrugged. ”The other scouts don't know that though. I’m gonna keep them outside the town for the rest of the day. Gonna run an exercise. They’ll be watching for the marksmen to crawl through the field their standing in until I get tired of seeing them look for something that isn't coming.”

Rafe’s face tightened, ”Maybe they’ll pay more attention in the future. If you got someone in mind to take up mantle of lead scout I’ll send them to discuss the position with you.” He finished with a faintly hopeful smile.

Trevor "Shadow" Stevens

Drip… Drip… Drip… The subtle sound of water dripping off his clothes continually broke his concentration on the here and now. The small drip was a bit annoying but still through this he continued to watch and listen to the others while he finished cleaning his armor. His mind drifted back to what his father had told him, the things about secrecy and careful planning, his father always had other motives for the things he did. After all, the man was sly and smart as well as violent when he felt it was necessary.

His mind drifted to the resources he had brought with him and whether he should let his anger and passion get the best of him and use these resources. His train of thought was broken when the Doc chimed in about being his doctor. Without thinking, he spoke to him, “don’t worry Doc it’s just a small sta-“ cutting himself off and looking over at Maisy, “-ab wound… Uhh yeah. I disinfected and cauterized the wound though, so it should be fine.” Trevor looked at Maisy bit his lip and shrugged. He knew he would get crap for that later, he figured the girl worried about him about the same as he worried about her.

With the commotion of Jain losing her composure Trevor took this opportunity to wring out his clothes into the bucket and start putting them back on. The confession and subsequent promotion was welcomed, he strived with authority but always seemed stifled when in full command. He finished putting his clothes on as Maisy spoke, he didn’t know what it was about her, but he sure did love the way she talked. He decided to speak after she had, “a whole lot more people could have died Jain. It ain't yer fault, I’m sure we all know shitty things happen all the time. But I can guarantee you that if we did nothing, if we just rode around the town and completely skipped it. Your people would have never forgiven you and many, many more would have died.” He paused for a moment as he slipped his chain mail on and began to fasten the leather straps on it, “you did a good job Jain, you should be proud you saved so many. Most of us can’t say the same, that we saved an entire town from destruction.”

Putting his belt and small back pack on he sighed, “So you grieve, you heal, you rest, you do what you have too. We will pick up the slack on our end, don’t you worry your pretty little face.” He checked his gear and equipment before speaking again, this time he wasn’t speaking to anyone in particular just speaking, “Everyone is entitled to their own sorrow, for the heart has no measure or form of merit, and all of it is… irreplaceable” he glanced to Maisy and gave her a soft smile before looking back to the door.

The door seemed to open for a moment and stop, then a dog and a scout walked in. Raphael, Trevor couldn’t recall the man’s position but then again he wasn’t really one to question the ranks of others for the most part. The news that the man brought though was interesting and again made him think about what he could do, “if no one else minds, I could get some of my men and me and Maisy could get the information out of the one prisoner you brought in. then me and my team could leave on horseback depending on how far away their camp is, if they have one” he crossed his arms and looked around at the others. His voice held strength and a bit more emotion than his usual monotone voice, “after we learn the location, my strike team could go and finish off the bandit threat” again he paused and thought about his plan, “I would be back tonight if I get the info quick. But I do recommend we stay here for a few days at least, even if we do take out the rest of the bandits this place seems to be lifting the morale of the troop already.”

James Ryder Blaise

James took in the information being given out right now. While he didn't think he would speak up for the duration of this meeting, he knew that he had to know these things. He may be a doctor, but he also needed to know the various info on the happenings of the previous battles in their expedition. While he was no good at talking tactics, talking to them to ease their fears and doubts was something he could do. While Summer, enigmatic as she may be, definitely covered this area well - James always offered an ear to those who needed it. Being someone who rarely had anything to do if not after a battle, he could easily offer up for someone to take their time in letting out any worries they had.

Assurance coming from Trevor that he was fine and he already did what he had to do, James nodded at him. Though Trevor's nervous glances towards Maisy was quite hilarious to the young male. If this were any other situation, he would have pointed it out and teased him, but this was neither the place nor the time to do so. He settled back into his position and then looked back at Jain as she continued speaking.

Jain had temporarily given her position to Maisy until she could get better, with Trevor being her second-in-command. Well, that much was already given. Maisy had been doing a great job rounding up the bandits and also getting their troops organized after such an ordeal - doing what she had to as their second-in-command. He approached her as she released what she could out and into the bucket. He then rubbed her back as she did so, holding up her hair so as to not get it all messy all over again. He was there to help, but there was nothing he could do. Her system was simply purging what Summer had put in for her.

James backed away when she was finished and Jain started breaking down. It was surprising to see the commander like this, and this was also evidenced by Maisy and Trevor's reactions. They offered their reassurances so that Jain wouldn't start thinking of things she shouldn't be. James could wildly guess that this break in character wasn't because of recent news - Jain could probably had that well. No, it was the drugs. It left people vulnerable before, James assumed that was still the case now. However, these were still her true feelings and knowing that her pride was so damaged as to think these - well, it wasn't very reassuring for James.

Raphael came in to bring in more news. Athena had come and insisted she play with the commander, though that was still up for debate. Trevor began speaking once more. James couldn't help but put in his input as well. "We still have people who need a bit of recovery so we definitely can't go on the move for a few days, like Maisy said... unless you want them to stay here." He pointed out. James rubbed the back of his head and then continued, "Hopefully not too comfortable, if we're going to move out, they just might not feel the want to go with us." It had happened before - people in expeditions staying behind because they found themselves too comfortable in the town. James had even seen some of the women of the town insist that the men stay. The reasoning behind the offer was already obvious, and James just really hoped no one would fall prey to their wicked charm. They still had a long road ahead of them, after all. "In any case, good luck. I don't want to get another patient during your raid." He joked with Trevor.

James turned back to Jain, taking a chair and then sitting down - placing both arms on top of the backrest. "Y'know boss... er, Jain. Like they said, it's fine to let it out every now and then. It's not like we'll hate your or anything just because you've exposed yourself as a person with feelings. It isn't your fault that they died - not entirely at least. So you shouldn't beat yourself up like that. You're a good commander, they wouldn't follow you otherwise." He then placed his head on his arms, not knowing if his words had any effect - or if it would only worsen her condition. Though, by now, he just wanted Jain to open up a bit more, but willingly this time. "You really should know that I know how you feel. When you're a doctor and you fail to save a life... it really brings me down you know. I've had at least two people die on me because they were beyond saving, but the guilt is still there. You have days to come in terms wit it, and more to improve yourself. Isn't that how the world works?" He mused, wondering if he was still giving Jain advice or if he was just trying to get over his own failures in his line of work.

Mayor Lorna Travit

Lorna Travit hadn’t seen their like before nor imagined people like these people of Lasthope who’d come in bold as Cooter Brown riding to her town’s rescue. They came charging in from the west like the cliched Calvary Charge of old Hell Bent and Hard Leather and swept up The Duke’s gang like a storm swept the sands clean. Then once they’d eliminated the gang they’d turned their attention to what was left of her hometown and after hearing her people had shot their Leader who’d come for parlay showed a form of professionalism she thought long gone.

They could have shown their anger over Hank’s injury of the redheaded Commander but instead simply demanded for a stretcher and a place to care for her and their injured.

The second in command was a pretty blonde woman named Maisy Palmer and it was easy to see she cared for her people and could control her anger and her people as well.

Poor Hank was hiding and even crying knowing for sure that the Calvarymen would drag him out soon and either kill him outright in in slow degrees but Lorna being a good judge of character was sure that wouldn’t happen. The Lasthope people asked to make camp in her fence and then had gone to the beach to wash themselves and their clothing and in doing so attracted a great deal of attention from the young and even older women of Arlington.

They were a well fed and handsome lot these people and the strong bodies of their men fresh as baked bread laid on display to cool before the hungry women folk of her town; of course Franny and her little puritanical churchies disapproved and asked Lorna to declare that the town’s women not prostitute themselves but as Mayor Ms Travit knew better and had told the old busybody not to go by their camp or the beach.

She had watched as these young men had followed orders like soldiers clearing up the dead and even burning the bodies. How they had conducted themselves and did so with very little complaint their Doc’s even set up a small clinic to see to the locals after they’d cared for the wounded; maybe they were humanity’s Lasthope.

Then as she was thinking things over she became aware that the odd little woman who’d said she was the unit drug peddler was sitting on the hood of an abandoned car feeding a gaggle of Ravens and one of those birds was as white as snow. So ambling over to chat with her she was surprised when without turning around the little woman said

”Hello Mayor come to pick my Brain?” without even turning around.
”Well I was hoping to talk to you and say thanks for not wanting our scalps for your boss….um ….May I ask your Name, Mine’s Lorna? said the older woman

”Most call me Summer, some call me Witch or the Poison Pixie...I like Summer best she said in a sweet tone as she turned and smiled .

”I think I like Summer Best as well chuckled Lorna unsure why this small woman made her feel so nervous.

Maybe it was how even her own people, Troopers they called themselves treated her with respect and a weariness even though as far as she could tell Summer held no rank.

I am harmless as long as i am not aroused so your worry is wasted effort; I know a good woman when I meet her so if you’ll join me I’ll explain what’s going on and what you might expect offered Summer

Lorna took her up on it and over the next hour sat listening mostly to the story of the people of Lasthope and their Chief Comber who sounded like a fine man. She heard of how they survived and had developed a democratic society, how they had hard rules on the treatment of their own and even outsiders but most shocking of all at least to Lorna was that they had a working train and wanted to begin trade with Arlington and any other towns they found on the old lines; then Summer just smiled and said she needed a bath and walked of leaving Lorna there to ponder all that she’d learned

Current Location: Arlington - Interacting With: Rafe & Trevor - Mentioned: Marksmen

Before they could leave to see what information they could extract from the prisoner, Rafe had arrived to where Jain was being treated. Rafe reported that the marksmen were trailing the bandit leader, and as well brought up the point of needing someone new to lead the scouts. "That's great to hear. We can discuss the specifics later, Rafe." Maisy replied, making eye contact in hopes the scout understood what she meant.

"For now, make sure the marksmen do not engage until we have more information from our prisoner. I do not wish to see the same events take place once more." The rancher explained, before saying her farewells to those in the room once Trevor had finished cleaning up. Walking beside the woodsman to where the prisoner was being housed, Maisy had come to a halt once they were hidden from the Arlington crowd by the cover of a dockyard building.

"You idiot!" Maisy exclaimed, socking Trevor in the arm. "You told me to stay safe, but what do you do? You get yourself stabbed!" Maisy continued, as if she was a child treated unfairly. She had taken care not to get shot, yet Trevor could not say the same as Maisy could. "What if it was worse? You could've just as easily ended up like April or Darric!" Eventually, Maisy closed her eyes and sighed. "...It is nothing serious, right?" The rancher asked inquisitively, hoping to hear an answer to calm her worries.

Raphael raised an eyebrow at Maisy’s phrasing and stepped aside as she and Trevor left. The scout waited till they were out of sight before he pulled the door shut tight and turned back to face the room. “Doc, you need to be deaf for the next several minutes.”
He said.

Athena nuzzled the ball and Jain’s hand. Her friend was still sad, and the ball brought happiness, joy and fun. It would work if the human would play with it and the canine. Athena’s tail was in a slow wag even as Raphael began to speak.

”You don't intend to let this stupidity last long do you?” Rafe asked arms crossed. ”Just cause you never wanted the job doesn't mean you can just dump it the first time it gets too hard.”

The scout had known the commander for years, he’d been around when they found out Summer’s concoctions are not hypoallergenic. Rafe had a good laugh at Jain’s, and Summer’s, expense that day. And now one of the scouts oldest friends was before him in tears; As much as he’d like to comfort her as Athena tried to, Rafe had another approach. Rile the bear and provide a distraction and the well of tears goes dry.

”Don't even consider coming back to the scouts.” Raphael stated, doing his best to sound nonchalant. ”Being in command has made you noisy, you make more noise now than the Cosplayer.”

First I’m gonna kill Summer then I’m going to remind you that I am a Tracker not a Sneaker; you were always the sneaky one and it ain’t no mind for me to argue the point.

I am high as the top O Hood for the drugs that witch done filled me with; I can’t honestly feel a thang.

Well that ain’t exactly true; I’m hornier than a Mink come must. They saddle me with this soon as we got back in Rafe; wernt no time for me ta so much as get me a good long kiss then ta add to my woes what ever I am flying on .

I think she ain’t got the strenght right!...
said Jain before having to pause and quickly lift the bucket which did more for it’s smell to cure her nasua as she sat it right back down and grabbed the jug of water provided swish and spit 3 times .

Okay back to me and what I want

I want the locals if they are so inclined and have available provide me a tasty drink and three of the prettiest girls who like redheaded women; You know ma type Rafe so you cul em. These girls are to be ma personal nurses till I can ride again and fer what, ever I am able an they willin then i call all sorts clear and hold no grudge
Jain giggles and talks like she does when she celebrating at the Trooper pub.

Petra makes her presence known before she steps in the room by barking

”Girls step aside and one of you open the door” then steps in as several local women look at her with some degree of awe.

Men folk out except my two and then they need tend the fire and lines so as they drop it off.”

Petra is uncharacteristically aggressive and demanding at least outside of her area of command. Normally she only reminds Troopers that she can give them a good horse or a bad horse or none at all if they mistreat their mounts. She proves her Dominance sitting on the bed with a grinning Jain who is about to say something only to have the Pony Princess place a finger on her lips for quiet.

”Sorry Jain but I have decided you deserve the services of a nurse in more than name. Sure my average patient is 4 legged and called a horse but I know how to watch the injured.

We need to clean you out and up so I brought your brush up kit and mouth wash. You are going to gargle then drink at least a half gallon of herbal tea
nearly every teamster begins walking in with loads they set down where Petra points.

Table, Steaming pot of water, a female urinary, potty, wash stand, towels, extra pillows, and a change of clothes.

Petra also points to the foul bucket and the discarded bandages which are removed.

Now everyone else unless you’re here to take my orders as head nurse out and whatever it is you think she needs to know keep it to yourself and or tell it to Maisy, same with any command decisions.

Jain sweety Summer said I should come and help you so don’t worry and forget any protest I will bathe you and put you to bed.
said petra with a sigh to a Jian whose grinning ear to ear and already trying to undress.

James Ryder Blaise

James nodded at Rafe and then placed two hands on his ears to cover them, but he still could hear what he was talking about. He headed over to the side to wait out the interaction. Rafe didn't seem to have any want of actually reassuring the female, but rather making her learn the lesson rather harshly. To each their own, James thought.

Jain kept on rambling on and James couldn't help but shake his head at the situation. It would seem that he wouldn't be needed here any time soon. It would be better to just exit here and now, before he sees anything else that he might use as some sort of tease to anyone later. He never minded this side of anyone, really, as it was understandable in all of their situations. He imagined the others felt the same way after a long and stressful day.

James shrugged, not that he would know.

Just as he was about to exit, Petra and her team burst in and she declared herself Head Nurse and would take care of Jain instead of the Arlington folks that Jain had requested. Yup, he wouldn't be needed here. "Yup, I'm outta here. There are still some patients out there that might need my help." He said, walking out with a wave and then gesturing for Rafe to do the same. Petra will take care of Jain. James had enough trust in his mentor's daughter to know that much. There was a small smirk playing on his face. Now he wondered what kind of stories would be passed around now.

The young doctor stepped outside and then took a deep breath. He wondered what he should do now. Yeah, he said he would check up on the others but Amir had certainly taken care of them. Hanging out with the local girls didn't seem like too bright of an idea if he were to go off with the stories told by the troopers and scouts. Maisy, Trevor and Rafe would undoubtedly be busy with... everything else that they needed to do to get rid of those bandits.

And so, James walked around aimlessly - occasionally smiling and shaking his head at the invitation of some of the girls.

Rafe smiled as the commander heaved herself out of her funk with threats and demands. ”That’s my girl.” He started. ”Hell and brimstone. I think I saw a few candidates as I passed through; Just gotta mention a wounded hero…”

Raphael’s words faded away as Petra whirled into the room like a tornado in a trailer park. He smile turned into a smirk as ordered were delivered and command was firmly gripped. The scout tossed a few amused looks at the doctor. Has the dominating personality ordered everyone out Rafe walked up and put his hand on Petra’s shoulder. ”I understand the back of her right knee is a unique spot.” Taking the hand away from the princess's shoulder he pointed a finger at Jain’s nose. ”I wanna know the location of every freckle.” He told her.

Snagging the tennis ball Raphael tossed it past the door the doctor held open. Athena whimpered her head swivelling between Jain and the direction the ball went; The canine hesitated briefly before letting out a frustrated bark and barrelling after the ball. Rafe laughed and followed her, patting James on the shoulder as he passed.

Once the door was closed Rafe nodded to James. ”Thanks doc.” The scout said as he headed off in his own direction. The scout was lateish; Arriving at the field he had sent the scouts to wait Raphael’s smile disappeared. He circled the waiting scouts.

”Form up,” He barked, doing his best to imitate Petra’s usual tone. ”I want a circle backs to each other. I have a special exercise, no one gets r&r until you successfully complete it.”

He waited until the scouts were in position before continuing. ”You are going to stand in this field until you spot your favorite marksman. Billy and Vicky are going to attempt to sneak across this field. You will do your damndest to spot them, if you do you are free to join the party inside those walls.”

Rafe didn't mention to the others that the marksmen were most likely far from the town. This was supposed to be a punishment, and so the task was one that wouldn't end when the scouts wanted. Turning he pointed to the top of the wall nearest the scouts. ”I’m going to be up there. I will be watching so I’ll know when and who is slacking, and will ensure they get punished. I will also be able to see where and when the marksmen pass through. And no I won’t give you hints.”

“If you don't want to participate in the exercise; Home is that way.”
Raphael finished gesturing back towards Mt. Hood. He started back towards the cities gate. ”Good luck.” The scout tossed over his shoulder. As soon as he was out of sight Rafe dug the book he was reading out of his pocket, he figured he’d finish this off today and start the other in the morning.

Trevor "Shadow" Stevens

Trevor watched quietly as the others spoke and gave their own opinions of the situation, nodding to the others as he filled out the door behind Maisy. Something about this town and its overly friendly women folk made him feel weird, he wasn’t used to this much attention and somehow he had caught the eye of many of them. Perhaps it was his height or the fact he wore medieval armor, whatever the case the little ball of fury beside him kept most of them away just by looking at her. He could have sworn she glared at him whenever he was stopped by some lady’s looking for attention.

She was being rather quiet until she pulled him behind some buildings to escape from all the prying eyes of the townsfolk. He was wondering what was going on until she spoke up and hit him in the arm, “Ow” he said as he gave her a sad face and rubbed his arm. He still kept quiet as the smaller girl spoke, she was right to be worried and it wasn’t something he was used too, having someone worry about him. Still, the worry and subtle sadness in her voice made him sigh, but he still smiled at her, “I’m sorry, I’m not used to someone worrying about me or my safety. But my leg will be fine, it didn’t go to deep.”

The man paused for a moment to look around then looked back to her, “you know I’ve been thinking about us a lot lately and well, I wanted to talk to you, so I could tell you something, so I could be honest with you” again he paused nervously looking around. He began to speak in a hushed tone, “everyone in the Fort Stevens contingent is sworn to secrecy not to me but to my father. So by telling you this I could very well be exiled from my settlement.” He paused again and sighed, “Some teamsters we brought with us are not teamsters. Five of them to be exact, my special ops squad, Task Force Bravo, Witch Hunters” this was hard for him, but he wanted to be honest with her and effectively he was choosing her over his father.

“They are here because of my father’s contingencies. For example, if the expedition was to fail, their job would be protecting me and getting me home, effectively making me disappear when you would need me most.” Again the increasingly nervous Trevor checked his surroundings before returning to her. “Another contingency would be to protect me if I were to take command, and they would snuffle out any resistance to me.” He smiled at her for a moment, “I want to be honest with you, no secrets.”

This time he stepped up to her and put his arm around her, pulling the girl closer. “I was going to wait till later to tell you this but with the deaths of our comrades, the stark reminder of who we are, of what we are, and what we will become… I don’t want to wait any longer” he looked down into the blonde girl’s mossy green eyes and smiled. He waited for a little while just getting lost in her eyes for a few moments, “I don’t care if you want to keep what we have together secret, I’ll still keep it secret because it’s what you want.” He was still smiling, and he could feel his anxiety start up again as his hand was shaking. Moving his right hand to run her hair through his fingers he sighed again and brought his head down to whisper in her ear, “Maisy, I… I love you”

If I could save time in a bottle, the first thing that I'd like to do is to save every day, till eternity passes away just to spend them with you. If I could make days last forever, if words could make wishes come true I'd save every day like a treasure and then, again, I would spend them with you. she sings as she does her work.

Her voice is one that many of her friends back in Lasthope sit around praying will never stop entertaining them as the Bard of the town. Summer sings to time her work as much as she does to fill the silence around her when she works and even with no audience except for several dogs, her ravens and her horse her voice is flawless in acapella solitaire. She knows many songs and stories which she uses to entertain babe to grandparent which she uses to keep her memory sharp like the old school methods that used poetry as a similar exercise; also to help her with her loneliness.
She never seems lonely to people when she's around them because if she is around anyone who may see her then she isn't technically alone and happy for the company.
Then as she finishes one song she breaks into another as she thinks about her friend Jain and how sad she seems now that life and responsibility has caught up to her .

Yesterday all my troubles seemed so far away. Now it looks as though they're here to stay. Oh, I believe in yesterday.
Suddenly, I'm not half the man I used to be. There's a shadow hanging over me. Oh, yesterday came suddenly.
Why she had to go? I don't know, she wouldn't say. I said something wrong. Now I long for yesterday.

It's funny how life forces people to change, to become what they were meant to be and strange how those best suited for certain tasks ; vital tasks , tasks of leadership are often so uncertain of their own necessity. A Leader must feel some doubt, humility, and protectiveness in their positions or they become quickly the tyrants they fear they will become and it doesn't take a large rock to her head to see that Chief Comber is grooming Jain to become one of his possible replacements. Summer loves the Chief and knows his judgment to be sound which makes her wonder did he send her as Jain's council knowing she would help mold the young scout into a better leader; he is one of the few Elders who accepts Summer as a Wise-woman even calling her that when he and she are in private asking her observations and opinions as he once did her Kisu.

Summer had heard the Troopers discussing her friends break down and worry over Jain's ability for having done so and the thought made her laugh. They didn't understand that the redhead had been as high as the clouds when she broke down and it was the drugs talking and loosening up her tongue and giving voice to her inner doubts; doubts everyone with any sense had.
Summer wasn't worried about her resolve but more her reactions to the foolish way in which April died but she had heard Jain complaining about needing a physical release and it was something she could do to solve; not with her own body but with those females here in Arlington who enjoyed the company of women.
To accomplish this she had formulated a plan that involved what she knew of Jain's type and the ones locally available and her friendship with the Mayor who she was sure knew her people enough to give such advice

I'm diggin' my grave, I'm diggin' my grave
My road to hell is surely paved, With all the love that I never gave
I'm diggin' my grave; Oh lord I'm diggin' my grave

And the hole is made, With a pick and a spade
And all the debts never repaid, Oh how I wish that I could have stayed
But the hole is made; Oh lord the hole is made

She sang as she dumped the contents of her mortar into the pot of water she had bubbling on her fire
Two of the dogs that had decided to make nice with Summer lifted their heads signaling that someone was approaching warning Summer of her visitor before the girl even walked out of the Shadows of the night
"Lorna said I should bring you some bread" said a pretty brunette as she sniffed the air in obvious confusion.

"What are you cooking cause it sure don't smell like anything I ever ate?
Summer giggled before answering already enjoying the young stranger's candor
"It's a bit of something I'm making to ease pain or the tongue; not to eat"

The girl laughed then made an encouraging appraisal of the little witch's form pouting in disappointment that most of her was concealed beneath her blanket.

"Kind of small to be riding with these people aren't you?" she said to Summer genuinely curious

"The smallest Scorpions are the deadliest " answered Summer

"In this case though I am acting as the Medicine maker"

"Medicine Maker? are you like a doctor?" the brunette asked

"More a Midwife than doctor and an Apothecary in this case as none of our number is expecting though I am sure my services may be needed before we return home." before adding

"My name is Summermoon but please call me Summer"

“Carve your name on hearts, not tombstones. A legacy is etched into the minds of others and the stories they share about you.”
― Shannon L. Alder -

Once they arrived at the point where Billy indicated the bad guy had gone down it didn’t take long before Vicky saw the first drops of blood and knew that this would be an easy trace.

The fool was actually making it easier for them by following the Vietnam Veterans highway most likely because he found the way easier to move along than the rough rock strewn sides which meant the two Marksmen could jog at a slow pace and cover ground at an even faster themselves then things changed when they found one of the other raiders shuffling in the same direction clearly wounded himself which explained the increase in the blood trail.

The man was gut shot and on the edge of death though showing a great deal of determination when Vicky and Billy caught up to him.

”I’m done fer an I knows it could one O’ yall put me down with yer long gun; I cain’t take it no more. If in yall dose I’ll tell yas where he be headin. said the man as he clutched his belly blood ozzing between his fingers.

Vicky looks at Billy letting him know she’ll do the man then said to him “I’ll do you right an can promise no pain

Then the man tells them about and abandoned barge by the river about 10 miles north-east and how there are 6 women and 3 men waiting for them and how he hopes they do the Duke slow when they catch up to him; Vicky thanks the man and then without warning her side arm, a colt python 357 revolver comes up and reduces his brains to chunks and a fine pink mist sprayed on the nearby hillside.

Knowing their quarry’s destination she looks at Billy (Traveling Music) and they take off at a steady run which can eat up miles at a pace twice that of a walking horse. They move close to the cut to their right made for the passage of the Highway giving the Bandit Boss less chance to ambush them.

Current Location: Arlington - Interacting With: Trevor - Mentioned: No One

Time froze like an eternity. The laughter of the children, the bemoaning of the walking corpses and the groans of the injured--all of it had gone silent. Trevor and Maisy were alone in their own little world, yet the rancher couldn't help herself to feel chilled by the woodsman's words. The secrets Trevor had explained to Maisy worried her, especially with the dire consequences that could happen. Trevor could easily be exiled from his own settlement or disappear without warning. Hell, the "teamsters" that came with Trevor could easily determine her part of resistance to the woodsman and take care of Maisy however and whichever way they felt.

Biting her lip, Maisy thought over what Trevor had said. It had been a lot to think over, with the by chance of disastrous consequences. Yet just as the cold swept over Maisy, warmth and color arose within the rancher. Trevor looked down at the much shorter Maisy, and wrapped his arm around her. As the woodsman spoke, Trevor grew even more nervous, bringing both curiosity and worry forth from Maisy. Nonetheless, what ill worries Maiy might have had was settled by locking eyes with Trevor and noticing his bright smile. Her hair was brushed through by Trevor's hand, who bent downwards to whisper in Maisy's ear.

What Trevor had said--three simple words--was more than enough to bring a vibrant flush of red, coating Maisy's cheeks. Both the woodsman and rancher had grown close over the several days the expedition had gone on, and Trevor was the first to attempt to officialize their relationship other than the occasional back and forth flirting they did. Upon hearing Trevor's words, Maisy opened her mouth, yet all that would come out were distorted and confused mumbling. Despite the show of badassery Maisy made sure everyone acknowledged, in the end, she was still a girl at the core.

The apocalypse stole Maisy's chance at young love, with some boy underneath the shade of the tree on her family's ranch... yet here she stood as red as a strawberry, unsure of her next move. A moment would pass as Maisy stood in Trevor's arms, flustered and wondering how to reply.
"I-I... I," Maisy replied, already coming to a crawling halt before she took a deep sigh, gathering what courage rested within her. "I think I'm in love with you too, Trevor..." She continued as Maisy twiddled her thumbs and looked downwards. Maisy wanted to slap herself for saying 'think,' as she believed Trevor would think she was still uncertain, but a gentle smile arose from her lips for Maisy counted her blessings and considered herself lucky.

Those few words, those few words that could make or break him. It seemed like time had slowed or maybe even stopped he wasn't sure which. This girl that stood before him was quickly becoming his whole world, and yet he felt fear. The last time he felt this way about someone he had to kill her and it broke him, sent him down a dark path. He quickly pushed those thoughts out of his head and just stopped thinking, trying to enjoy the moment.

Then slowly as if watching a flower bloom she began to speak, “I-I... I,” she was as red as a summer rose and just as nervous as he was. Her smile never faded, and he never felt her pull away, all good signs. Then he heard it, those simple words that carried so much weight, “I think I'm in love with you too, Trevor...” his heart raced, and he could almost fly with how weightless he felt. With a laugh he picked the girl up and twirled her around in that alley, almost like he was dancing to a tune only he could hear.

He set her down and kissed her, not once loosening his grasp around the girl. Eventually the boy stopped kissing her, still smiling with flushed cheeks he spoke, “that’s good enough for me, now let’s go torture this guy.” He eventually let go of her, he didn’t want to, but they had to go back to work eventually. He straightened himself out and took a deep breath to get his mind back in the right spot, “come on then” he smiled again waiting for her to take the lead to where their prisoner was being held.

Current Location: Arlington - Interacting With: Trevor & Prisoner - Mentioned: Summer

While time seemed to slow down for both the woodsman and rancher, it quickly sped up. Trevor let out a jolly chuckle after Maisy's confession, sweeping the latter off her feet and into the air. He twirled around the alley, nearly causing a spell of dizziness to fall upon Maisy before Trevor put her back down on her own two feet. Nevertheless, Trevor wasn't done with Maisy yet, leading his own lips to plant a kiss. The kiss caught Maisy off guard even more so than she had been before, but it felt fluid and comfortable as if the rancher had no qualms towards Trevor displaying his love.

Soon enough, Trevor finally let go of Maisy, remembering that they need to get back to work so the others would be able to do their jobs and duties.
"A-Ah, yes! The prisoner." Maisy responded, quickly taking the lead yet with almost a skip in her step. The feeling from before stuck with Maisy, despite any and all attempts she tried to shake them away to focus on the task at hand. Still, it wasn't long before they reached where the prisoner was being held--an old metal shack that was more or less to the back of the makeshift town.

By the way the prisoner acted, it was obvious Summer had paid a visit before either Maisy or Trevor had done so. The prisoner was delirious, slumped backwards in his chair despite the ropes binding his body keeping him secured.
"Let us see what the boys at Fort Stevens are capable of, Trevor." Maisy stated, leaning against one of the metal sheeted walls. Trevor was clearly more intimidating than her, with his massive frame and chainmail armor. If anyone could get him to talk, it would be Trevor.

Billy squatted next his partner, his eyes on the barge. ”If you watch the exit, I’ll board from the water.”

William removed removed his hat and boots. Stripping his shirt off he carefully piled most of his gear on the poncho. Setting his rifle and hat atop the pile Billy tied the poncho into a bag to make it easy for Vicky to carry. Billy gave her an appreciative nod and made his way to the river bank, tomahawk and knife in hand.

Slipping his tomahawk behind his belt, William quietly waded into the water. His eyes watched the water for out of place motion. Reaching the barge safely William pulled himself onto the deck, his eyes seeking movement. He shifted the knife to his left hand and drew his tomahawk scanning the exterior of the barge. The marksman's eyes fell on a bit of canvas tied over a missing panel.

Moving to the side of the missing panel William deftly sliced the rope holding the tarp in place. Carefully he slipped inside, crouching against the wall immediately. Billy waited letting his eyes adjust to the light inside the barge; Scanning the inside he found himself amid a cluster of cots. Creeping along one he examined the barge further; At the far end the marksmen saw what looked like a roughly made wooden cage. Inside it he saw a small cluster of figures huddling together.

The sound of flesh on flesh pulled William’s attention to the other end of the barge. There he saw a group gathered around a fire, and a single figure between him and them near the barge’s entrance. Moving towards the group Billy counted their number to confirm the intelligence the marksmen gathered enroute. As he approached Billy watched as one of the men slapped the woman again.

The marksman had his targets identified, twirling his tomahawk William straightened from his crouch and began trotting towards the fire. The man guarding the entrance turned towards the sound made by the trotting. Billy picked up speed as he passed the man, his left hand darting out. The knife drew first blood slicing through the guards side across his ribs. The man yelped and the others turned towards him.

A step after striking the guard William’s right arm snapped back before whipping forward releasing the tomahawk. The marksman's target caught the weapon in his chest. The man’s revolver slipped from his hand half drawn from the man’s holster. The woman at the fire scurried away from the fight. The man who had slapped her drew the spiked club he carried and moved to intercept their attacker.

William shifted the knife back to his dominant hand. Billy heard the sound of a gunshot from behind him, followed by the impact of a body on the ground. The man with the club glanced over the marksman’s shoulder where the body of his comrade landed. William didn't hesitate his blade flashing out to slash the distracted man’s throat, as the marksman continued past him. William gripped the haft of his tomahawk and pulled the weapon from where it rested.

Raising the weapon Billy put it through first one skull then the other; Eliminating the threat of the dead rising. Turning his eyes to the only other male still breathing, William studied the wounded man. ”Will he live?” The Lasthopian asked the woman. As she nodded Billy pointed the tomahawk at the duke. ”If you want to continue living drop the knife.”

William turned away from the man he had pursued to the barge and smiled at the woman. ”Why don't you go free your friends?” He said gently, even as his tomahawk dripped gore. “If you could find two of you to carry this one back to Arlington, I’d appreciate it.” He finished motioning to the duke.

The woman eyed the marksman cautiously before a glimmer of hope flickered in her eyes at the mention of her home. Retrieving the knife the Duke had dropped, she skirted around William and hurried to the cage door. Billy gave the duke a cold smile, as he pulled the gun belt off a corpse. ”Don't move, don't resist, and we’ll keep you alive as long as we can.”

William moved back to the entrance sheathing his weapons, including his new revolver, and climbed up the ladder; Before he exited Billy stretched his empty hands above him before placing them where they can be seen. Pulling himself up and out Billy waved and then made a circular motion, giving Vicky the all clear. Dropping back inside the marksman leaned against the ladder, watching the women prepare to leave.

Trevor "Shadow" Stevens

He followed closely behind Maisy stopping only momentarily to talk to a young tall man with scruffy brown hair and a short mustache wearing what looked like the standard trooper uniform. It looked like he was running errands when he stopped the man, “hey guy I’m overruling any order you currently have, I need you to go to where the fort Stevens contingent is camped, probably out near the wall and say the phrase, Lute singer pass, and tell them where I am. After that, you can go back to what you were doing.” The trooper looked on with a bit of curiosity but didn’t say anything as he turned toward the town gate, “Hustle” he called after him watching the other man take off.

Trevor caught back up with Maisy and watched as she seemed to know where to go, he didn’t see where they took the prisoner and frankly didn’t even know they had one till someone spoke about him at the meeting. The small metal shack had a few other troopers mulling around pulling security. What security they offered was rather relaxed as only one stood near the door while the few others talked to a few of the girls around.

He couldn’t help but smile seeing the prisoner in his compromised state, beaten, drugged, delirious, and otherwise broken. He almost instinctively knew this man wouldn’t be the best source of Intel if they simply beat him half to death, with his experience with raiders and other bandits one simply needed to know what they wanted. Looking to the short blond next to him he smiled and spoke softly so the man wouldn’t hear, “A man’s touch you say? I don’t agree, raiders like him are used to beatings and hardship, force won’t make him talk. No, they came here for a reason, that reason is the key to making him talk.” He paused for a moment looking back towards the way they came to see a few familiar faces, “they came here for women Maze, so I do believe it requires a woman’s touch.”

The tall man turned to face his old friends and smiled, “it’s good to see you all again, I hope you have been having fun with the teamsters?” he asked only to receive a glare from the short black haired girl, “you called” she spoke with a bit of attitude and subtle resentment before looking to Maisy then back to Trevor. “Ah yes, were doing an interrogation today with the good possibility of a mission later.” He was still smiling when he brought his hands together and began to rub them, “Xena and Siren, lose the underwear and find some loose fitting clothes and join me together in the room behind me when you’re done.” The two nodded and walked off to go talk to a couple of the nearby local women. “Ifrit and Specter, go back to the camp and prep everyone’s gear for a raid, and Guru you get to hang out here in case we need medical attention for whatever reason, so go get your med kit and come back.” The three nodded and went to their duties.

The man sighed before looking back to the small girl, “Maisy, you can stay and watch from out here, but don’t come in. I need him to focus on me and the other two, the less distraction the better.” Again the man smiled at her and with a deep breath the smile vanished, and he entered into the old shed. The metal walls of the shed where rusted and had several holes strewn throughout the sides letting in some light but was overall dim. The man strapped to the old kitchen chair didn’t move, he was wearing a torn white t-shirt with tan cargo pants caked in mud and blood, the man was scruffy and stuck in this small room he did smell. Whatever injuries he had seemed to have stopped bleeding.

Finally, the man suddenly sat up in his chair, straightening his back and looking at the man across from him. This raider eyed him carefully before sinking into the chair, still groggy from whatever he was given but otherwise kept silent. None of this bothered Trevor he simply moved a small end table up between them and lite the old lamp that was placed on it. Pulling the only other chair up to the other side of the table, a metal folding chair, he sat in it with the back facing the raider and rested his arms on the back of the seat. After a short staring contest Trevor spoke, “you wanna tell me your name?” his question was met only with silence, “you want a smoke don’t you maybe some food? Start off by telling me your name and maybe I can arrange something for you.”

The Raider seemed to be having trouble keeping his head up but finally spoke up, “what’s the point? You're just going to kill me anyways” Trevor laughed and then sighed, “no my boy I’m not going to kill you, so why don’t you look me in the eye and tell me your name?” the Raiders head bobbed again and with a smile he spoke again through crooked and yellow teeth, “I’m called Shawn now where’s my food.” Trevor smiled at the man and got up walked around the table and pulled out an old granola bar, being mindful of his fingers he offered it to the man. The groggy man didn’t waste much time taking a bite of the food and eating it sloppily. “So, Shawn why don’t you tell me about why you and your friends where coming this way.”

Shawn swallowed and smiled, “well you see lad, this place has some rather lovely women, so we were gonna come here take the place over, and have our fun with the lady’s here. The ones we got back at camp are getting worn out, some boys where even looking forward to the younger folk they got running around.” Trevor watched the man carefully, when he was talking about their plan he seemed to almost be prideful of it. But the last part was off, his eyes shifted to the upper left for a moment. His father has gone over interrogation techniques before as well as things to look for. This subtle movement looked to him to be a possible lie, sure there were some sick people in the world, but he was sure this man was just goading him into harming him.

“So then Shawn if this is true, then where’s this camp of yours?” the man’s smile went away for a moment, “o and what do I get for telling you something like that?” Trevor smiled, “you told me you came here for ladies didn’t you?” With that audio cue the door to the shack opened letting a fresh breeze in as Siren and Xena stepped through the thresh hold. Both were dressed in rather loose and baggy clothing that was a bit see through. The duo stood back and played with their hair giving the man a few smiles and looks that could give a normal man a heart attack. “Tell me where your camp is Shawn” the man barley payed any attention to this interrogator of his and was completely awestruck by the two girls before him, “up the river a way is an old barge we have been using for the last few days.”

The two girls stepped a bit closer at the man’s answer, “how many prisoners do you have?” Shawn didn’t answer and only starred at the girls laughing. “If you don’t answer they go away” Shawn stuttered for a moment before speaking, “we only have a handful of prisoners maybe 5 or 7” again the girls stepped closer. “How many guards did you leave there and what are they armed with?” The man smiled still looking at the girls, “well there’s maybe 10 or 15 of them there, really most of them just have basic weapons. The one the boss left in charge will have a pistol I think, but it doesn’t have any ammo” Trevor watched as his friends went and knelt down next to the man running their hands over his legs and arms.

“Do you have any supply cashes in the area?” Shawn could barely pay attention to their conversation, “yeah sure, the boss hid most of the long term supplies somewhere, but he wouldn’t tell us anything, most of us thought he didn’t have any supplies left and that’s why we came here.” Trevor nodded and walked towards the door, “Thank you for your cooperation Shawn. Ladies were done here.” The two girls sighed and stood following their friend out the door, “Wait, why are you leaving? I told you the truth.” Trevor turned to look back at the man, “I believe you but I don’t have any more questions. Maybe next time we talk you will be more cooperative.” Trevor smiled at the man as they left, leaving him crying in his chair.

The two girls looked to each other than looked at Maisy for a moment silently judging the girl before moving off to go change. Trevor didn’t waist much time either as he looked to Maisy, “don’t mind them, they’re just protective I guess. But we got the info we need so if all goes well we should have a mission going in a few hours. However, I think I might postpone our attack until the marksmen get back. If we do go and strike them I want to have the extra cover.” He looked to the girl and nudged her playfully, “now I got to go get my guys ready, you can come with if you'd like, but they aren’t going to be to warm towards ya.” he smiled at the girl then motioned to Guru, and they both left towards their camp.

Current Location: Arlington - Interacting With: Trevor, Witch Hunters & Anyone With a Radio - Mentioned: Jain

As the duo reached where the bandit prisoner was being held, Trevor stopped one of the troopers. The woodsman uttered a password, and sent the trooper on his way. It had made Maisy curious as she saw him hustle to catch up, but she knew she shouldn't be one to dabble, especially after what Trevor had said before. If anything, it would either get one of them killed, or some other undesirable fate that neither of them would particularly enjoy.

By then, Trevor had made a good point as Maisy watched him ready himself for business.
“They came here for women, Maze, so I do believe it requires a woman’s touch.” Trevor spoke, yet it was only something Maisy could partly agree with. The raider was from the band that not only killed and injured some from Lasthope, but also kidnapped (and most likely raped) women and killed men from Arlington. Maisy was a civilized girl, but understanding being "nicey-nicey" when someone was liable for a good sucker punch was something she struggled with, or rather, held strong opposition against.

Several women eventually appeared at the door of the building, and it was clear that they held a strong disregard for Maisy by the looks they gave the rancher. Nevertheless, they followed Trevor's orders, and the duo was left alone once more.
"Ain't got to worry, Trevor. We're here on official business, despite my hankering to tromp this yellow belly's britches." Maisy tossed Trevor a smile back his way, just before the rest of his squad entered.

The next few moments were interesting, to say the least. Trevor started slow at first, having the raider, now known as Shawn, warm up to him with the power of an expired and ancient granola bar. Then, everything took a change, and Maisy frowned on how it was handled.
Ain't them women got any respect for themselves? Horse feathers... Maisy thought, shaking her head as Trevor brought in the two women. It wasn't her show, and the man spilled his beans, but Maisy was lost in disbelief at how they used their bodies to their advantage.

Eventually, the interrogation came to an end, and everyone came outside of the shed. Maisy bit her lip as the women judged her once more with their staring, but Trevor was quick to save face as he explained the details.
"Ain't expecting it to require their shooting irons after the bandits showed 'emselves to be as useless as a bull with tits. Go on, Trevor, let's have us a jamboree." Maisy explained, returning his smile once more as they all set out to gather what was required for the expedition.

It had taken the matter of a few hours, but eventually the party was ready at one of the gates to Arlington. In comparison to the rest, Maisy was the only one that stood out, evident by the looks she was given and the way she held herself. Some still held her in disregard, and the fact Maisy held herself like a cowboy out of a spaghetti western certain didn't help.

Pulling forth a walkie talkie, Maisy announced that they would be leaving for a few hours at the most.
"Trevor and I are goin' get a wiggle on finding the rest of the bandits. We'll be back." Maisy explained over the radio, and then motioned for the party to head out. The ride to the barge was relatively uneventful except for the occasional stray corpse. Maisy knew there was distance between her and the rest of the group, and frankly, she didn't want to bother with it.

The party stopped a decent distance away from the washed up barge to plan their next action.
"Now, Trevor. I don't give a rat's ass about any caterwauling hootenany limerick Jain might have--this is my operation. You either have loaded guns or you dig. You always dig. I'm not planting anyone 'neath daisies but the yallers up there after what happened earlier." Maisy explained, before reaching for a pair of binoculars to begin to scout the area The rancher's eyes spotted a number of men, but they also noticed a few horses obviously suffering from poor care.

"See those horses, Trevor? They'll dart off like a jack rabbit if we don't get 'em first. Think you can mop up their plates and keep my horse from being shot out underneath while I gather 'em up?" Maisy asked, looking to Trevor should he have any ideas of his own.

Raphael lowered his book and turned to watch the group gathering to leave. He scratched Athena behind her ears while Maisy made her radio announcement. Standing Rafe set down the book and leaned against the wall and watched as the group left.

Cupping his hands around his mouth he yelled after them. “Have fun storming the castle.” His eyes fell to the scouts in the field below. “You guys see what your supposed to be watching for yet? No? Then keep looking.”

It took a bit of discussion before the group left the barge. The first argument was about the women having to carry the prisoner; This was solved when it was established that both Billy and Vicky were armed and neither would allow anyone else to handle their rifles. The second discussion occurred when Maisy made her announcement over the radio.

At first the former captives reacted poorly. Suspicions forming about their rescuers, suspicions that the Lasthopians were quick to dissuade. However the conversation turned to the Arlingtoners desire to wait for Maisy’s group. Once it was pointed out that there could also be bandits on the way the group was quickly on its way.

Billy strode ahead of the women clustered around the prisoner while Vicky brought up the rear. The march was uneventful, and soon Arlington was in sight. The rescued women started to rush ahead, William dragged his heels a bit but allowed an increased pace.He raised his arm in a slow wave to the guards on the wall.

The women not carrying the Duke rushed forward as the gates opened. William singled out one of the guards. ”Fetch whoever is in charge and a friend. You need to take this prisoner off the ladies hands.”

His head swiveled looking for a face he recognized. Spotting one of the troopers Billy waved him over. ”Fetch the boss,” He started. “She should be here when we turn over this one.”

Leona walked along with Brynhild. The massive black horse had its head lowered to the grass, trying to catch a bite as they moved north. It had been heresay, but rumours of a camp, a good camp, had reached Leona’s ears. Some place called Arlington, east of Portland. It was all new for the California girl that Leona was.

Grass squelched softly underfoot as she walked. It was quiet, though not too quiet. The birds were chirping, which was good for Leona. No dead heads near her. Taking a deep breath, the woman sighed as she remembered all the bullshit that had happened in the last few weeks. She had been able to hole up outside this one small group, but then they got wiped out because they had no idea she even existed. Anyways, Arlington was supposed to be rather large. Safety in numbers.

The sounds of the Columbia River rose up in the distance. Pulling out her map, Leona kept walking. If she was right, then Arlington proper should be just about twenty miles away. Stopping for a moment, the woman checked all of Brynhild’s saddlebags. While she was doing this, the horse filched a few bites from the grass at their feet. Her tail waived at a few flies as she waited.

Finishing up, Leona climbed into Brynhild’s saddle. It wasn’t far now, she should be able to make it by sundown at the latest.

Trevor "Shadow" Stevens

Trevor noticed how Maisy looked at him after the interrogation, “something to discuss later” he thought as he got himself and his crew ready. A small strike team with him and Maisy, he only had a little objection from them as they got ready, but he assured his team that she wouldn’t be coming with them for the combat phase most agreed she would only get in the way. A harsh reality, but he honestly wasn’t going to say anything to her about it, he didn’t need another injury.

They didn’t have to wait much longer before they headed out with the information gathered from the raider. It was a small team, the five from his team, himself, Maisy, and a couple of troopers who had proved themselves to be reliable and quiet. Their job mostly was just to stick with Maisy, Trevor couldn’t remember their names and just referred to them as Steve and Jeff.

The road towards the barge was quiet, they road their mounts slowly taking a longer route across the high ground and through a few creeks. They had only been riding for thirteen miles east when they spotted the small plume of white smoke coming from a nearby park. They dismounted and left the troopers with the horses before approaching the small hill where the old train tracks rested, several old lumber carts still rested along the tracks a few hundred feet down the line.

Specter was the first to crawl up to the berm and motion for the others to follow, with a low crawl they all popped their heads up, so they could see. A barge had been marooned and tied off to an old dock down on the shore of the old park. A few small Conn ex boxes rested on the old thing, their doors broken off or forced open and being used as shelters for what looked like a small camp of raiders. In what was once an old parking lot several mistreated horses wandered around a small area that was hastily put up.

The small group being satisfied with what they saw slowly backed down from the berm and looked to each other, “what do you guys think?” Maisy was the first to speak up, “Now, Trevor. I don't give a rat's ass about any caterwauling hootenanny limerick Jain might have--this is my operation. You either have loaded guns or you dig. You always dig. I'm not planting anyone 'neath daisies but the yallers up there after what happened earlier." The others looked to each other than back at Trevor, "See those horses, Trevor? They'll dart off like a jack rabbit if we don't get 'em first. Think you can mop up their plates and keep my horse from being shot out underneath while I gather 'em up?" the girl sure did like her horses, even if to him some looked like they would be better for eating then keeping.

The others looked to each other and shrugged, Trevor looked to Maisy and smiled, “Will do, but remember you’re on our schedule.” He didn’t mean to sound demanding, but he knew his guys and knew they didn’t have too much time, so he quickly put a plan together and looked to the others. “Alright plan is to drop back down the road a little ways and drop over the side to the river bank. From there we will work our way up river, low and slow like.” He looked around at all of them to make sure they were all listening and to give him a moment to think. “Maze once the killing starts, I’m going to leave it up to your best judgment of when to swoop in for the horses. I recommended doing it if they are alerted to our presence. That way you would be a distraction.

Again the man smiled and looked to them, “everyone good with that?” subtle nods of approval from his squad was all he needed to continue, “Alright then, let’s get this done and hopefully be done and back at camp by sunset.” The small group moved back to their horses, and he gave a wink and a smile to Maisy as him and his crew slowly trotted off down the high way.

---------------------------------------

It didn’t take the team very long to get out of eyesight of the barge, the ground down to the river was loose with only a few stones rolling down the hill into the river below. The deep blue water of the shore line was rather clear and rocky, the water cold from snow melt made them breath deeper once they entered it. That cold shock that is responsible for many drownings because people can’t get their breathing right before trying to swim to shore or back to the boat. The group spent some time in the water, getting used to the temperature before moving out slowly up the river.

The swim was rather nice but slow, there was a bit of wind on the river, so they didn’t need to worry about ripples but still had to worry about sound and sight. It took them fifteen minutes to get back up to the first dyke. The low vegetation provided ample cover for the ill prepared bandits over the next berm, a few small pine trees did give them good cover while they crossed one at a time over the barrier and back into the water.

When they got to the next berm they slowly crawled up the embankment spread out carefully Siren and Ifirit had their short bows at the ready with Specter up in front and the rest with weapons drawn ready for a fight. Specter got to the top and could see a few of these raiders lounging around on the barge, some looked like they were napping in the sun a few others had fishing poles and seemed to be cleaning some of their things. A few others seemed to be patrolling around out front with spears and other crude melee weapons. But none of them could see what was in the containers they had opened, that would be difficult to assess.

Specter slowly backed down and turned to the others making various hand signals to explain what he saw, from the weapons to how many they had walking around. Slowly they all looked to one another, the simple nods, facial expressions, and body language said a lot about them and how they were trained to carry on a conversation without a word to one another. Eventually they moved into position, Ifirit, Siren, Xena, and Specter would engage them at range until they got privy to where they were and draw them into Guru and Trevor who would be waiting for them to come in and attack. At that time Xena would then stop attacking at ranged and then come in to help out with the melee.

It only took the team a few seconds to get into position before they started their attack, the first few shots were targeted. Shooting for the ones that were awake prioritizing the big guys or the ones with the good weapons. The first volley all found their mark, screams of pain and alarm filled the air as the ones that were hit and weren’t killed cried out. The second volley was the same, more hits, more confusion, and more death. It wasn’t until after the third volley that they started to take cover and notice where the arrows and bolts were coming from, but by that time their fighting force had been reduced to half.
