It's fine, the Penance Stare has been completely neutered by Marvel for years. It's effectively useless these days.


Its so back and forth. Its either done on someone who can resist or it nearly kills God-Doom and he has to use ALL of his power to stop it. Never an in-between. But I have TWO people in mind that can resist it in this roster and I'm not sayin who till we get to that interaction....one day. I will outright refuse if asked cause I want to keep the sanctity of the Penance Stare, touch, or whatever...sacred.

Also tbf Modern Marvel is the one that undid the Punisher is immune to the stare nonsense. That was the start of its bullshit.

PMO when a writer's like 'here's a super cool but completely OP one-shot ability that's a major gimmick of this character' and then everyone else is like 'actually having a completely OP one-shot ability makes writing meaningful conflict difficult so instead we're just going to make everyone immune to it'. Just don't write in completely OP one-shot abilities in the first place! It's like the first rule of power design!

A way more interesting thing to have done with Penance Stare immunity is making the acts of the individual not evil from their foreign perspective. Put GR up against an avatar of a neutral but destructive force. Like, give us GR vs Lady Death - Lady Death obviously kills people, she's Death, but even though it causes pain and suffering and snuffs out lives, it's not evil (at least from her perspective) because it's just her natural function and a basic law of the universe. Oops, you can't Penance Stare the embodiment of entropy.

Also, I hate the modern Penance Stare. It's supposed to be the harm you did to others, the evil you embodied... reflected back at you. Not if you feel bad about it. I hate modern Marvel sometimes! Making the coolest shit lame as fuck.

I, personally, would rule the Penance Stare as "All Sin Committed" which meanst hat, yes, certain creatures would feel nothing. Galactus kills billions, but he does it out of self preservation, not greed or gluttony or pleasure, he does it because he will die if he doesnt. And he is no more guilty of sin for eating a planet than i am for the millions of Cheeseburgers i've eaten.

Thanos, it could be argued, his people have a different set of criteria for Sin, which is why it doesnt work on him.

Cleatus Cassidy on rhe otherhand, should just fucking explode. Vaporized, shredded down to the last atom. Fuck off with that "BuT hE dOeSnT fEeL rEmOrSE!" Bullshit. But i could see the argument being made that "The Carnage Symbiote itself hasnt done anything wrong and to kill Cletus would also kill the symbiote would be to take an innocent life, by the purset definition of Sin."

Honestly, its the Dunning-Kruger Effect. The more you know, the more you realize there is left to know. Bailey is fairly easy because he's only been around for 2ish years, so getting caught up on him is easy. Ghost Rider on the otherhand has been around for 50ish and about 4 different people and 3 different incarnations of story that i can think of.
