Psychology & History
From detailed inspection and investigation by ANBU and medical personnel“Sometimes, even when the skies are grey, I can still see a ray of sunlight poking through.”| Personal biography: |
Despite the ferociousness of the winter, Kohaku can't really pinpoint any time specifically traumatic for her. She never really knew her parents well, the both of them suffering an unfortunate fate during a mission entailing a powerful shinobi from another village. Kohaku was only around two at the time, and as the only other remaining blood relative of hers, she was taken under her grandfather's wing.
It would be an exhausting struggle for the old man, with the everlasting snow slowing down business and a new child to take care of all day. But he wasn't going to let his deceased son or his only granddaughter down. His store may have been small, but he let Kohaku roam around, allowing her to skim read any of the children's books that interested her to keep her entertained. Although she was always one to 'liven up' the store with her ecstatic behaviour, Kohaku took a quick liking to the books that surrounded her. All the factual books she blazed through during the weeks developed her curiosity towards the world, specifically the animals and plants that inhabited it. Having a fascination for books as much as her grandfather drew the two closer, and it lifted the depressing thought of the overbearing winter from their mind a little. Noboru was happy, Kohaku was happy; her childhood may have been simple, but it gave her a sense of hope during the long years of winter.
Kohaku's sociable personality earned her a good deal of friends and acquaintances during her time in the Academy, and she studied as hard as she could and whenever she could. She focused and excelled in academic studies, though she attempted to improve her physical studies. What she lacked in physical strength she made up for with brain power, though this didn't hinder her from vigorous training outside school. She recognised her talents and attempted to enhance them even more. Although her physical prowess had held her back a few years, she graduated at fourteen, just about passing the physical tests and passing the written exams with flying colours. Success brought her and her grandfather great happiness, and for the first time the girl felt truly proud of something.
---
While she appears to be the spitting image of her mother, Kohaku takes almost none of her character, as she has grown up solely with her outgoing and talkative grandfather. She shares his extroverted personality and confident demeanour, and is on the more assertive side of the spectrum compared to some of her classmates. From a young age, Kohaku has always been bold, energetic and extremely curious; 'Life is too short', her grandfather would often say, so she maintains her thirst for knowledge and social personality. Even through tough times, Kohaku won't let the cold bother her. Well, she tries, at least.
Even so, Kohaku tries to act as responsible and independent as she can, though there are times where her childish tendencies break her 'mature facade'. She possesses a bit of a tomboyish side and sort of has a mischievous streak amongst her closer friends, she sulks when she loses bets and small competitions, and she doesn't take insults too well. Some people may see her as too nosy for her own good or perhaps too bubbly that it's more annoying than comforting, but Kohaku does try to act friendly and cheerful towards other people. There's nothing wrong with warming up a cold, silent room, is there? | Family biography: |
Kohaku inherited both Gushiken and Kawano blood, both small families being quite well known amongst Konoha ninja, but both very different in terms of fighting style and physical appearance. The Gushiken were taijutsu-focused Lightning Release users, specialising in nintaijutsu and frightening brute strength. The Kawano were stealth-focused Water Release users, relying on their immense speed and ability to enhance a few of the five senses to weed out and surprise their opponents. As well as the Kawano family's signature amber eyes, they were recognised for their great chakra control and sensory abilities, able to enhance their hearing to the point where they could hear voices from 300 metres away. Kohaku's grandfather has stated that the Kawano blood runs strong in her, especially because of her fighting style and looks.
| Family ties: |
Noboru Gushiken | Grandather | 68, Former Jōnin and currently a book shop owner
Akio Gushiken | Father | 40 (at death), Jōnin
Asako (Kawano) Gushiken | Mother | 42 (at death), Jōnin
| Dreams and fears: |
Kohaku has relatively mundane dreams for the future. She wouldn't mind marriage or even starting a family, though she feels that looking after more than two children would be a struggle. At one point, she even stated that she would want to write a book about... something. She's not so sure what the genre or premise would be at the moment.
As for her fears, Kohaku actually has many of them. She becomes noticeably frightened in the face of danger quite easily, despite her efforts to conceal it with a confident laugh or a bit of false arrogance. She may even become unusually harsh and snappy and attempts to deny things people have pointed out. As much as she wants to strengthen herself both mentally and physically, there are times where she experiences some low points from the belief that she's barely making any steps forward to improving herself. Constantly relying on other people is something Kohaku tries to avoid, as she believes she won't make any improvements without having at least some independence. She knows that her grandfather works hard for her, and so she wants to work hard to improve herself as a person and face her fears too; nothing hurts her more than becoming a burden to others.
*Kohaku is ironically afraid of thunderstorms, and can feel a bit uneasy in the dark.

Combat Reports
From detailed reports from previous missions and academy sparring matches“I can hear you.”| Fighting style: |
Kohaku's fighting style is focused around stealth, speed, and surprising the enemy. She mainly uses ninjutsu and ninja tools (her common array of choice including wires and smoke bombs), and techniques that allow her to trap and distract opponents. Despite often fighting from a long distance, Kohaku's exceptional reflexes, balance and flexibility also makes her a capable close range combatant. She's relatively average when it comes to taijutsu and physical strength, though apart from her tendency to kick rather than punch, Kohaku isn't as noteworthy as others. However, as agile as Kohaku is, she can't take physical hits as well. Her chakra and stamina reserves are also lacking, so she attempts to avoid prolonged fights.
Kohaku is also an adept sensory ninja, utilising three of the five senses to track her opponents; by focusing her chakra to her hands, ears, and nose, her exceptional chakra control allows her to sniff out her opponents, hear an enemy's footsteps, or feel the vibrations in the earth beneath her to feel anyone approaching. Her perception range is obviously limited; currently, she is able to hear clearly within 100 metres, smell from 80, and feel the slightest movements from within 70.

DescriptionAfter forming her hand signs, Kohaku channels a small electrical current around her body. Upon contact (e.g the enemy trying to grab her), the enemy receives a slight electric shock, which is strong enough for them to retract themselves from Kohaku. This process happens within less than a second. She mainly uses this as an escape tactic, or a neat way to shock and temporarily distract someone in a hand-to-hand combat fight.
This electrical current is still quite weak, and is only able to distract an enemy for a few seconds. It will not damage them in any way. One can also tell when she is using this technique, as small sparks will begin to flicker around her body. This electrical current can only be active for ten seconds before having to form hand signs to activate it again.
