Welcome to the Voting and Feedback round for RPGC#29!

It is Halloween, and I have five stories for you to get you in the mood.

Voting and Feedback guidelines
  • Please take your time to read through all the entries before voting for your favourite work. Did it make you laugh or cry? Was it the most original? Did it have the best grammar? The reasons you base your vote on are up to you, as long the vote isn’t based on whether or not you like the author.
It would be nice if you could share why you voted for a specific work too.
  • Giving feedback is optional but highly encouraged. When giving feedback you should be respectful and constructive. It’s good to point but the flaws in the story as it will help the writer grow, but don’t be mean.
Make sure to point out what you liked or what worked well too.
  • Contestant may and are encouraged to vote for and give feedback for the other entries, but don’t vote for your own entry. If contestants wish to withhold a vote and only give feedback, that is good too.
  • The entries are anonymous unless the writer asked for having their name added. That being said, writers may claim their work at any time during the voting period.
  • The entry with the most votes will win, but in case of a tie a Contest Mod will cast the tie-breaker vote.
  • You can vote for entries and post your feedback in this thread.
  • If you rather have your vote and/or feedback be anonymous you can PM it to @Calle instead.
  • The voting period deadline is November 10th, 9:00 GMT+1, which is 7:00 game time (both times are in a.m.).

First anonymous vote is in.
They voted for: The Light That Leaves No Darkness
Their feedback: I honestly truly appreciate the tone and pacing. The fact the main character isn't a completely unprepared or inexperienced individual is a nice touch, adding in the fact that it almost seemed like it wasn't the presence that was the only dangerous thing, but the one entrapping and ensuring it cannot cause any further sacrilege against those interred within. Add in the solid dialogue and it was my favorite. The other's were solid as well, but I do think the one I voted for is the one I appreciate the most.

More votes will certainly follow since the deadline is still 9 days away, but the voting thread won't be shown in the sidebar for the entire period. Today an art contest was launched as well and that one will be advertised in the sidebar in a few days.

I dare say I'm a sucker for good SPAG, and I believe most of the entries in this manage it fairly well. However, I think I'd argue that of the stories, the one that offers the best atmosphere is The Light That Leaves No Darkness, followed closely by Piety. The former offers a very solid foundation of the world itself, the main character and her adversary, and the sort of person you need to be to carry the metaphorical light- or indeed, the literal flame- to flush out darkness from the world. The latter, meanwhile, paints a very disturbing picture of something between a mental break and the demoniac masquerading as pure, and the consequences thereof - not to mention the uncertainty of what's about to happen to the perspective character in its ending.

I think, however, that I prefer the consistency of The Light That Leaves No Darkness, given that it goes without introducing said perspective character in the last few paragraphs, and therefore that would be the one that gets my vote in this case.

I will add more here later to explain better why I picked what I did and what I did and didn't like about the other entries later, but I wanted to get a vote up now and at least a little about the others before I forget.

It's "Violence" for me too, that's my favorite of them. Several of the stories were quite good. As stand alone entries I thought each of them told a good self contained story without leaving anything vital left unmentioned. I'd like to see continuations of Violence, The Light That Leaves No Darkness, and The Ghost in the House as I felt that while each told a self contained story each also left a hook for another story either with the same characters or at least in the same setting. Like parallel or perpendicular.

Violence gave me a little bit of a True Detective feel which is basically crack to me. The mix of the supernatural with the mundane. Just hit the spot. I also liked the sort of unfortunate stupidity of the cult leader dude and the Wiccan. Seemed very believable that people like that, particularly young and high people like that, would think they can probably pull something like that off if they try really hard.

The Light That Leaves No Darkness had a Warhammer/Dark Souls/Dark Fantasy In General vibe to me which is also like crack to me but a slightly lesser form of crack. Like it had been diluted with baking soda or something. Not quite that good good but still good.

The Ghost in The House I liked as well. The characters were all distinct enough that even though it was fairly short it wasn't too hard to keep in mind who was who despite them all being male characters. I like the idea of a guy who talks to ghosts and a vampire hunter/beastie killer and a guy named Mike adventuring around together doing weird spooky shit. I liked the dialogue with the ghost lady too. Killer shit.

My vote goes to Piety

I enjoyed reading all entries but Piety stood out for me.

Violence and Piety had a more spooky feel to it than The Light That Leaves No Darkness and The ghost in the house. The two latter felt, to me, more like a fantasy-story and a little less halloweenish.

Violence and Piety gave more chills and the Spooktober vibe, one would look for in entries in a setting like this contest, was more palpable.

Between Violence and Piety it was a bit more difficult to choose my favourite but Piety painted the better picture with words.
You hear more about the macabre history and the present flows in neatly. I love the open ending, makes me wonder what will happen to the unfortunate soul that walked in.
I didn't get that feeling in Violence, eventhough that story was well written it didn't really make me wonder what would happen next.

Piety managed to get you sucked in the 'you'character in just a few lines while Violence felt more like spectating till the end, it didn't pull me in like Piety did.

*Slides into contest voting section.*

So I had started to write reviews for each and every one of these, when I left for dinner, came back, forgot what I was doing, and wiped them away with a stroke of my keyboard.

I 100% plan on writing reviews for everything I read, but it's late and I won't get a chance to do anything before the deadline. Hopefully this topic stays open long enough after the fact for me to rewrite my reviews.

This contest was closer than most. but my vote is for The Light That Leaves No Darkness. I did appreciate violence and ghost in the house, and I'll get more into that when I write my reviews later.

The deadline is in 30 minutes and I'll announce the winner then.

@BrokenPromise the thread will remain open after the deadline, so you'll have plenty of time to finish your reviews.

No last-minute votes, so it's time to announce the result:

The winner of this contest is: The Light That Leaves No Darkness with 3 votes. This entry will be added to our hall of fame.
Runner-up is Violence with two votes.

Well done everyone.

As I said in the previous post: I will leave this open for any late reviews and to give the anonymous writers a chance to claim their story or respond to the feedback if they wish to do so.
