Old Snowbeard

Location: Lemmas Peak, Inn Interacting With:@KZOMBI3@Enarr@Kidd

Sequestered high in the European Alps was a small town called Lemmas Peak. The reason for Lemmas Peak's extreme location was simple; it was an attempt to deter travelers. This was due to the fact that the town was created as a sanctuary for magical and supernatural entities, some of whom had nowhere else to go. Five years ago, a traveler had arrived in town, an old man with snow in his beard. He had enjoyed his time there and decided that the next time he needed a break from the miseries and sorrows of the world, that he would return to that warm little town. Then, just the night before, Old Snowbeard returned.

A snowstorm had blown in when Old Snowbeard arrived. It was late, long after the residents had went to bed, most of them, anyway. Despite the harsh conditions, Snowbeard walked the streets as if he didn't notice, assisted only by his large, wooden stave, healthy green vines growing out the top of it. He took only a moment to blow the smallest of flames into his cupped hands before proceeding to the local Inn. Exhausted and blurry-eyed, Snowbeard had politely but quickly paid for a room and slept, not bothering to do more than remove his boots, gloves, and outermost robe.

The next morning, about an hour before sunrise, Snowbeard dressed and descended the stairs from his room to the Inn's lobby. He had intended to introduce himself to his host properly, but it seemed they were not up yet. Shrugging, Snowbeard simply exited the inn. Now that the storm had passed, he was interested in investigating the town; what was the same, what changed, who lived here now. Even with the weather being fairly clear now, it was still quite cold, and Snowbeard considered letting himself into the kitchen to find something warm to drink. Before he could decide, however, every animal in the area turned it's attention towards the center of town, and Snowbeard did the same.
For a moment the town stood still, only for four individuals to suddenly appear in front of him. There was gust of wind as the air that had previously been occupying that space was suddenly forced out of the way, seeming to scatter the animals with it. The mystery party consisted of two women of similar age; one with blonde hair, the other with, unless Snowbeard was still snow-blind, blue hair. There was also a man in the same age-range wearing an elegant brown suit. Neither the woman with the blonde hair nor the man seemed properly dressed for this kind of weather, and the blue-haired woman seemed to be dressed correctly by complete coincidence.

The fourth member was the strangest by far. He was taller than the others, with dark skin and long black hair. What was much more striking, however, was the skull of a saber-toothed creature that he wore as a helmet, the heavy pelt he wore for warmth, and the tattered black robe beneath it. This man barely looked human, and something deep inside Snowbeard told him it wasn't. For a moment, Snowbeard and the creature locked eyes, and Snowbeard saw it's eyes were golden with slit pupils, like a predators. Then it broke eye contact, choosing to instead look around at it's new environment, bewilderment quickly fading to curiosity.

Old Snowbeard started towards the group. He would give the creature the same benefit of doubt that he'd extend to the rest of these surprised, confused people. "Well..." he said loudly, trying to add an element of cheer to his voice. "Welcome to Lemmas Peak! I'm sure you all have questions, and to be perfectly honest, so do I. But if we don't get you out of the cold, questions will be the least of your problems. Come on, there's a fire going in the inn, or soon will be." And with that, Snowbeard attempted to lead the confused strangers to the Inn, where they could warm up and, hopefully, provide some insight into what exactly was happening.

"We're gonna be rich..." Brody uttered in awe. "We're gonna be famous!" Stacy shouted, stars in her eyes. "This could well be the greatest historical find of our generation!" Persephone mused with wonder. "I don't know, Sephi, I got a bad feeling about this..." Randy complained. The hikers had been investigating rumors of a yeti kidnapping tourists at the South Pole, but what they couldn't have prepared for what they found. Embedded in the snow had been a three foot by three foot cube made of silver and lapis lazuli, intricate symbols and designs engraved into every surface. It took them most of the day to uncover it, partially due to Randy not helping since he was the one who twisted his ankle tripping on it. They decided to set up camp right there in order to study it thoroughly. It was late evening when Persephone finally discovered the locking mechanism on the outside of it. After an hour or so, she had managed to unlock it. An aperture opened on one of the cube's sides, and Persephone leaned her head in for a better look. The cube was furnished on the inside, with the floor being covered in an incredibly plush fabric, the walls and cieling being draped in cloth. The interior had the look and feel of a lavish bed chamber, except the bed was the chamber. Even more bizarrely, while the cube itself was exactly three foot by three foot, there was easily five square feet worth of space on the inside!

Persephone stuck her head back out and shouted "Come here, you guys, you gotta see this!" before eagerly peering inside again. She could hear her friends approaching when she spotted it. In the center of the cube, sunken into the otherwise pristine fabric, was a shriveled, mummified corpse. It's body was wrapped in loose, colorless threads that once looked to be some kind of garment. On it's head was the fossilized skull of a sabre-toothed tiger. Persephone slowly reached forward, gingerly attempting to retrieve the mummy without damaging it at all.

As Brody approached the strange cube, Persephone suddenly let out blood freezing shriek as she began to pull herself out of the cube, only to dive back in. Brody ran over to the opening and looked inside. The last thing he saw was a pair of golden eyes just behind Persephone's bloody corpse. The mummified corpse launched itself out of the cube and tore into Brody. Stacy screamed in terror, unable to do anything else, while Randy fled as fast as he could. As he sprinted across the snow, he heard Stacy's screams cut short. He continued sprinting at full speed. If he could just get back to the van! It had a full tank! It had snow tires! It had a friggin' radio!!! If he could just make it- but he didn't make it. The corpse tackled him to the ground, sinking it's own sabre-toothed fangs into Randy's thin neck.

Twenty minutes later, the hiker's bodies remained, but all trace of their blood was gone. Revitalized, Sabor slowly made his way back to the mysterious cube he had emerged from. His memories were fractured, as they always were after sleeping for centuries. This cube... He thought. It's not mine... why was I in it... that's right... that wizard... he and I had been traveling. After a very brief investigation, Sabor concluded that the wizard must have gotten them trapped in a blizzard where he died. Which means that the wizard school's fancy magic cube is all mine. Sabor thought, the edge of his lip lifting into a poor attempt at a smile. Sabor climbed atop the cube and sat down, cross legged. The cube instantly began to respond to his will, turning fifty-two degrees north and, lifting a foot off the ground, began hovering in that direction. Sabor road his unusual mount into the night, taking hours to reach the nearest human settlement.

Or, at least, that had been the plan. After only a few short minutes, the scenery changed. He was suddenly surrounded by humans dressed in strange garb. One was dressed similar to the fools who had woken him, the other two were not dressed for the cold at all. Suddenly, Sabor sensed something; a powerful entity. He turned his attention to it and found himself locking eyes with a tall, old man. The man looked ancient, and Sabor could sense he was. Only a fraction of my age, but that in itself is an achievement. In the old man's eyes he could read distrust, as well as the merest veil of threat. Sabor simply looked away, uninterested in the stranger's accusatory gaze. As he began examining his surroundings, Sabor came to realize he and the old man were not the only unnatural entities in the vicinity. "Interesting..." he muttered. The stranger approached the crowd offering warmth and food. The last time Sabor had accepted such offers from a robed figure, it had sealed his destiny. And now... he would do it again. Sabor rode his magical cube up to the Inn itself before "parking" it outside and following the group in.

Ryan
"I needed this," Ryan sighed, the wine coaxing her to give in and drop her elbow on the table. She took another sip as a newly engaged couple eyed her from their seat and exchanged glances. Who would slouch like that in such a high end restaurant?

The young woman across from her didn't mind. Piper laughed at her sister and finished the water she had. "It was your idea," she said as a waiter cleared his throat to give them the check. Piper smiled apologetically and took it from him as Ryan managed to sit up and make a face at him. "Aaand your treat?"

Now Ryan laughed and reached to take the paper. "Duh." In return for his contempt, Ryan didn't add a tip to the automatic 18% gratuity--not that she had any qualms about the price. The restaurant was her choice, after all--a reward to herself for finishing a particularly difficult commissioned piece for a winter wedding. She had ranted to Piper moments before, demanding the reasons for a winter wedding: people already had the holidays to worry about and now a wedding? It's too cold. Way too much white if you go with a snowy theme. Not to mention the last minute demand for a dress. Ryan sighed again, handing her card and check to the waiter.

As he walked away to charge her card, Ryan finished her wine. "I'll run to the ladies room, then we can go," she said to Piper, who nodded and took the alone time to pull out her phone.

Moments later, Ryan finished washing her hands and took a moment to look in the mirror. She adjusted her red dress: it fell just above her knees and boots and stockings kept the rest of her legs warm in the New York winter. It sat loosely and comfortably on her, but didn't hide her slim figure. She smiled, running her hand over the wide neckline and turned to admire how it matched the red bow tied in the back of her hair. Satisfied, she shrugged at herself in the mirror and turned on her heel to step out of the ladies' room...

...and into snow. Ryan blinked at the whiteness around her. Her hands rose and she hugged herself tightly against the sudden cold. "Huh?"

She looked around at those around her: an old man who looked like something out of a fantasy show, a woman with the fashion choices of a teenager, a well dressed man, and...a cosplayer? With an ice cube? Ryan was stunned to silence, her brown eyes lingering on him the longest before looking back to the old man. She wasn't properly listening to most of it, but did catch an opportunity to get out of the cold that bit at her legs and arms. Dozens of questions were bubbling up in her mind, but Ryan still managed to bite her tongue for now. She just wanted to be warm and stepped to follow him. She hoped the others would do the same.

Sorcha had gone a day without stop. She had been driving through the snowy roads of the Switzerland countryside. Her eyes felt heavy with sleep and her stomach twisted with hunger. The snacks she had picked up at the last gas station had only lasted her for a few hours and had done a very poor job in keeping her full.

Sorcha was close; she could feel it in her chest. If she powered through another sleepless night, she would be able to finally catch up to the bastard that stole her skin. The thought of him made Sorcha grip the steering wheel of her car and glare at the road ahead. How could she have been so stupid? Trust someone enough to tell them her most tressured secret only of it to stab her in the back. Sorcha should have listened to her family, trusted them and not that man.

Cold.

She felt cold and tired. Sorcha craved a hot chocolate, like the one the old witch made for her during harsh winters. Maybe Sorcha could stop by the nearest town. Just for a few hours to rest up and eat a decent meal for once. She glanced to the side where her phone was perched up and began to search for a town or a rest stop, or anything.

Nothing. Sorcha found nothing within a reasonable distance from her. She wasn't going to risk it and go back to the town she had just left. She would have to power through the hunger and sleepiness for tonight as well.

With a loud yawn, Sorcha continued to drive towards the direction of the hex. She drove past snow-covered trees, one after the other. They seemed to lull her, making her forget the reason why she was even driving. Forget that man and her missing skin. It was almost relaxing to the point of sleep. Her eyes had become heavy, so heavy that Sorcha closed for a second or for what felt a second before she realized she was still driving.

With a jerk, Sorcha opened her eyes to the sound of metal hitting wood. It doesn't a bad crash, but her car was definitively in a ditch at the side of the road. Great. Just great. With some force, Sorcha pushed her door opened and climbed out of the car to examine the damage. In no way was she going to be able to back up from this place.

"Just what I needed. Good job on falling asleep, idiot." Sorcha groaned as she got her phone from the car to dial 112. Nothing. No ring, no signal, nothing. Another great was heard from Sorcha as she climbed up the dirt and snow towards the road. She stood there for a minute, just staring down the road where she was supposed to be heading. Great. Fucking great. He was getting away, and she was stuck here.

The hunger and the exhaustion mixed with frustration was only making her head pound with a massive headache. Sorcha was never great at expressing her frustration outwards. Most of her emotions overwhelmed her until she cried, and right now was one of those moments.

After a few seconds, she wiped her cheeks cleaned and turned back to her car but a warm light caught the corner of her eyes. Lights! Sorcha turned towards the source of the light and squinted her eyes as if it would help her see better. Those were definitely lights!

Sorcha ran to her car, grabbed her backpack and phone charger before she hurried past the tree line towards the lights.

It was a house decorated in Christmas lights followed by another house, then another. She continued to walk until she was standing in the middle of what seemed to be the center of this town.

"What the fuuu..." Sorcha had been sure she hadn't seen any towns nearby the last time she had checked the map. It didn't matter though, the feeling in her chest, the little tug returned to her for just a second.

He was here.

Apparently, people did not stock up enough firewood for the snowstorm yesterday. Now they're running up to him begging for more. For god's sake. Being the only few big guys in this small village, he's bound to be their donkey servant somehow. Barrock didn't realize it but he chose that voluntarily. He could be doing his daily training in the dojo or in the forest, but instead he decided to grab an axe to chop wood the whole morning before the sun even woke. That lady was just too assertive.

'Now, the inn.'

Grabbing the tree from the one corner of the mill, Barrock effortlessly lifted it and placed it onto an open area. After stripping it of its branches, the orc grabbed the axe he put nearby and sliced the tree into logs of similar length. Each log he would then split into four, a size small enough to fit any fireplace. It took a while to finally consume the whole tree, but the orc did not really break a sweat doing any of this individually. Once the final batches of firewood was complete, he wrapped them all up and tossed it over to the side. Now he would have to deliver it to everyone. The more annoying part comes.

As Barrock ran past each house, he would leave the firewood batch at the door or in front of the place where they would stock the woods. He didn't want to have to greet anyone here. Especially children or the animals. They loved to cling. People liked it. He hated it. He doesn't want any of their dirty claws with their disgusting saliva on his clothes. Back and forth for a couple of whiles, until finally the inn was the last destination. Since this contains more residents, Barrock had to prepare multiple batches, yet he was still insistent on making only one run, so he could finally get back to his sword training.

When he arrived at the inn, however, he noticed they had guests. Guests that were...absolutely not properly dressed. Were they dumb? This is not a fashion show to show off whatever flesh they have around their freaking white bones. And...who is this monstrosity even? Who wears skull mask nowadays? It's not even those artsy mask used in cultural recreation. Looks more like some biker things taken to the very fucking edge of the extreme end that you can fall off it and be barely recognizable. And it doesn't even look good.

"Ah. We have some...uhhh...unexpected guest. You mind fetching them some warm clothes." The inn receptionist addressed Barrock as he made his entrance. He noticed the confused tone, but the almost 10 feet tall orc simply rolled his eyes as he carried the woods to the backdoor then to the storage area. He then immediately headed for the clothing room to grab stacks of winter clothes containing sweaters, jackets, gloves and scarfs, all of different sizes - just what they needed for now. How does he know what to take? Because the moment that kid gets sick again, the orc gets fetched over like their little darling to help out. It annoyed him to no end.

"Ah, thank you, Bar." The receptionist jokingly addressed him as a vein popped on his forehead. "Don't go yet. Let them meet our resident's 'gentle giant'."

'Oh my FUCKING god.'

The orc groaned internally as he walked over to the group of newcomers and plopped the stacks of clothes he gathered on the table in front of them.

"Here." Barrock curtly said to the group with a low voice, before standing aside next to one of them.

A different scent hung in the air that morning. There was a different vibe than usual and Félina could feel it in her guts. But not only could she feel it, the cats did too. They were behaving restless, but oddly enough the young woman wasn't too worried about it. Although the cat café was still closed, she was enjoying some alone time while being surrounded by a bunch of cats of various sizes and colors. One was currently trying to get her attention, so it could get some scratches. While another was napping at the table she was seated at, and a few others were playing with each other.

"Stop putting your butt in my face, Sam!" Fé laughed, gently pushing the cat out of the way, so she could take a sip of her tea.

The sound of a cat flap opening made them all look up, and a huge cat with a shiny black coat and bright yellow eyes gracefully hopped in. Even Fé looked up from her tea, curious what kind of news it brought with him. For a moment she and the cats looked like they all shared some sort of collective consciousness. A smile grew on her lips, watching the black cat coming closer, patting on the table to invite that void with yellow eyes onto the table.

"Newcomers? Are you sure, Nox?" She asked with a sweet voice, referring to the black, fluffy one. Nox jumped up, gliding a little across the table. It tried to be elegant, but failed miserably.

So she was right; things did feel different this morning and Nox only confirmed her feelings. With her hands above her head to stretch her body, she got up. She wasn't going to sit here and do nothing while there were newcomers in town. Curiosity got the best of her, and she was dying to have a look herself.

"How does that saying go again?" She was pouting her lips while she was thinking about it. "Curiosity never killed the cat?" That wasn't how that saying went.

As Barrock walked into the inn, something hairy, gray and on four paws saw the opportunity to walk in as soon as he opened the door. It let out a soft "Mrreeeow", moving between the legs, while rubbing against the legs of the newcomers and the others. Her fluffy tail high up in the sky, with the tip slowly moving from left to right. The cat curiously sniffed their legs and taking in their scent while leaving her own on them.

When it was done, the cat gracefully jumped onto the counter next to the receptionist. Her gray eyes looked at the newcomers, who looked exactly like Fé's eyes but with slits instead of round pupils. Her tail wrapped around her feline body, hiding her front paws underneath all the fluff. The newcomers looked very out of place, as if they didn't belong here at all. Except for the one with the beard. Compared to the others he was actually dressed for this kind of weather. But the strangest of them all was the fellow with the fossilized bones, what was going on with that?

She was softly purring, curiously watching them. Wondering to herself what they were doing here and how they got here. She glanced up at Barrock who dumped a bunch of clothes on the table in front of the newcomers. But when the receptionist called him a gentle giant, a human-sounding laugh came from the cat.

Being a shapeshifter came with its perks. She could change into a cat whenever she wanted to, but also use their typical feline abilities. Such as being able to see in the dark, having a good sense of smell and her balance was always perfect. The other perk was that she could scare the living shit out of newcomers who didn't know about her shape shifting abilities.

"Gentle giant?" The cat snickered. "More like grumpy giant." Fé joked while she was still in her cat form. She gave Barrock her most innocent and cutest cat look. She knew he hated to be poked fun at, but Fé really couldn't help herself sometimes.

Elias chucked another bowl of chocolate into the sink in frustration. He had been trying a new bonbon recipe for about… He glanced up at the clock. Its red numbers glared back at him. 3:00 AM. Damn. Had he really been at this for eight hours already? Starting up the coffee machine again- thank god he owned a coffee shop- Elias grabbed another bowl to start his recipe again. One more try, he thought to himself as he waited for the coffee to finish brewing.

The bonbon recipe wasn’t even that difficult; it was a spin off of another recipe he typically made during this time of year. However, yesterday he had the great idea to incorporate blood into his current recipe for his more parasitic patrons. This idea turned out to be more complicated than Elias thought. Either the ganache mixture was not setting properly due to the blood or the texture was just too grainy for his liking.

He should really stop trying out these new recipes, but Elias enjoyed the challenge even if the journey was frustrating. There was something about finally figuring out the right ratio of ingredients that was so rewarding. It was also a treat to see customers enjoying the new recipes he created. Last year, he decided to try a raw meat pie. Why did he decide to mix cooked pastry with raw meat? Who really knows. It ended up being a big hit though and it was still on his menu to this very day.

Chugging down a cup of coffee, Elias turned the stove on to warm the heavy cream. As he waited for it to start simmering, he chopped up the chocolate and placed it in a glass bowl. Once the cream was sufficiently warmed, Elias poured it into the bowl with the chocolate and started whisking. After the chocolate had melted, he incorporated some blood into the mix. Elias tasted the mixture, nodding at the outcome. It wasn’t grainy at all this time, so hopefully it set properly in the fridge.

Since he didn’t have anything else to do, Elias started working on making the pastries for the morning. December was always the busiest month for him considering how many holiday parties and festivities that wanted his catering. Eventually, the baker got into a rhythm. As more pastries were baked, the smells of butter and vanilla wafted filled the kitchen. He boxed up the majority of them for his existing orders and the rest went into the shop window for when the coffee shop was open.

After he finished with his orders, Elias checked on his ganache. He poked at it, already liking the texture he was seeing. Putting on some gloves, he rolled out small balls and placed them in the molds. Then he covered the ganache balls in another layer of chocolate before placing them back in the fridge. By this time, Elias needed to start delivering his orders or he be back in time to help with the morning rush. Grabbing all the boxes, he secured them onto his sled. He made his rounds quickly with his last stop being the inn.

“Morning~” he greeted everyone when he stepped into the inn, juggling all the boxes in his arms. Elias walked over to the counter where breakfast would normally be served and sat the boxes down. He was about to chat up the receptionist when he noticed she was busy with some newcomers. That was strange, they didn’t typically get many visitors up here especially not ones that look so out of place. He wondered where they came from; it was like the snowstorm had just swept them in.

Bellman

Location: Lemmas Interacting with: @Kidd, @Rodiak, @Conscripts, @Lyly, @dioscuri, @sassy1085

Bellman stood, as he always did, beside the community notice board the night the unexpected snowstorm blew in. He had rang his bell in friendly greeting at the robed stranger, but the sound had been lost in the raging winds. Fortunately, they had managed to find their way to the inn on their own, and so Bellman remained at their self imposed post. The snowstorm had no effect on the ice golem, aside from burying them up to their knees. Every hour on the hour, Bellman rang their bell. At two hours and forty-nine minutes into the morning, the visitor emerged. He was a tall, old man with a long, snowy beard. His heavy robes reminded Bellman of their former master, a pang of sad nostalgia piercing their ice heart.

Suddenly, all the animals in the area, including a black cat named Nox, turned their attention to an empty patch of snow about ten feet from the door the old man had just exited. Even more suddenly, several travelers appeared. The old man hurried them inside and out of the cold, pausing just long enough to give one of them a look. Bellman considered walking over to the inn themselves when the lumbering form of Barrock emerged from the tree line. Bellman gave the towering orc a friendly wave with their free hand, not expecting it to be returned. As Barrock began delivering firewood to the various houses and shops, Nox made his way back to his own home.

Bellman was acutely aware of how long it had taken everything to transpire, two minutes and twenty-eight seconds. Eight minutes and thirty-two seconds later, Bellman raised their bell and rang it loudly.
RINGDING... RINGDING... RINGDING... Three rings. Three hours into the morning. A few minutes later Barrock had finished all but one delivery, heading toward the inn. Bellman was quite fond of the orc, but he wasn't fond of anyone, and Bellman felt a little bad that he was walking into a crowd of noisy, confused newcomers. As Barrock tromped his way down the street, a grey puffball of a cat emerged from the same house that Nox had just entered. Bellman recognized this one, but didn't know it's name. It slipped into the inn just as Barrock entered. Not two minutes later the local chocolatier emerged from his shop and began delivering boxes of sweets. Bellman had never had anything sweet, as they lacked a mouth, but the locals seemed to love them, and Bellman admired the man for that.

As the man made his way toward the inn himself, Bellman heard the familiar crunching of snow coming toward them from down the mountain, away from the snowy town. Bellman turned, their curiosity rising as a red haired woman approached. Bellman hadn't had the chance to greet any of the guests thus far, so they strode toward this newest one, intent on making a good impression. They rang their bell twice as a way of saying hello and then waved to her. It was a wide, slow, friendly wave.
