Ascension 3: A return to Chaos

Lila fell on her knees as she looked to Anui's expression. Cold, emotionless, side by side with his mother, whom still has that wicked smirk on her face. Even if Lila wanted to say anything. In shock, her throat was dry and she didn't have strength to stand up as she looked down to the ground. But instead of crying and breaking down, her tears stopped flowing. There was something wrong with all that...

Since when she became so dependent on someone? She loved Anui but... That wasn't who she was... Was she trying to run away from her true self? It didn't matter how much she tried, she couldn't make her body forget the reflexes of an assassin, she couldn't clean her hands from the blood she had already spilled... Love... Love made her fragile, weak, useless... broken... Love and all those other unnecessary emotions were the ones who put her in that situation, kneeling down in a pitiful state... She wouldn't let her newly discovered emotions blindly guide her anymore...

Fortunately, just as the Nayu elder was about to order the guards to take her, and Lila in return was getting ready to fight back, the very ground beneath them started shaking uncontrollably. Panic almost immediately followed on the hall where Lila was. Even though she thought she could use that confusion to escape, it was undeniable that that shaking wasn't just an earthquake... There was a tremendous force coming from below them... Something was making the ground shake like that...

But just as Lila was ready to run, a familiar voice interrupted her. Leaping above the others with a beautiful cloak made of black feathers, Anui landed before Lila.

"I'm sorry.. But we must go." Anui said, looking to the guards, who were helping the other royals to escape. Anui's mother followed him, shortly after appearing in front of them, saying that Lila should be in a cell. Lila gave a step back, wary about what exactly did Anui want with her, even though his mother's presence there already gave Lila a few ideas about what they wanted. But before she could think about it, but Anui's reaction immediately proved her wrong. Baring his fangs towards his own mother, Lila felt his arms embracing her and enveloping her in his coat.

Even if Lila was a warrior, an assassin, she was powerless when Anui embraced her. Love was a really scary thing. Beautiful, but scary... She couldn't help but to think... Love was no different from chains and shackles... The scariest part about all that was that people would happily use those chains and shackles voluntarily. And Lila... wasn't different. She couldn't help but feel happy and relieved when she felt Anui embracing her as he shouted towards his mother that he wanted to have an audience with the king. Even though she was a bit irritated with Anui, she couldn't help but let out a discreet smile as he sank through the shadow portal summoned by Anui.

Arriving at the castle's peaks, Anui and Lila observed the destruction and chaos going on below them. Looking at Anui's face, she could understand a bit why he was in shock seeing that but herself didn't feel much about that. Should she be feeling equally in shock? That wasn't her city... Those weren't her allies... Those weren't her family. Her family was only Anui.

Lila silently followed Anui to the private armory, watching as he took of his coat and wore a suit of light armor. His words sounded a bit ironic to Lila... How could she consider that 'her' kingdom? The only one who wanted her was Anui. Not even his mother wanted Lila. Rejected by her own race and betrayed by the Aion, the only place in the world for Lila seemed to be besides Anui.

"I'm sorry for... everything. I've not been a reliable companion until now, have I?" Lila said, looking down for a bit.

"My mind is still... So many things happened, so many new emotions, so many things to deal with in only two days... I know it must have been difficult to deal with me this time, but I... I'm learning how to control these emotions." Lila said, looking to Anui.

"I am still irritated by what happened... But the promise I made wont change. I am your blade and yours alone. For you, I would kill as many as it's necessary." she said looking at him, clearly irritated by him saying nothing when she called for him.

"Let me do the one thing I know how to do well, Anui. Let me fight by your side." Lila said, looking to him with a serious stare. She wanted to keep him safe, but that would also help her to clear her mind, to learn how to control all those emotions and to deal with all the changes on her life and herself.

Although the gladiator and the ronin were skilled opponents, both Titanica and Eilidh managed to defeat them. Regarding the other bandits, they weren't much of a threat as Bast and Vară easily dealt with them. After everything ended, George happily started to thank them and congratulate them by their victory. Despite his jokes and good mood, Bast's still didn't trust him. Something was happening and he would discover exactly what.

Bast himself would say something about his statement about a harem but he simply watched with a smile on his face as Titanica grabbed the man with her claws. Eilidh, even though she was adorable while blushing like that, was obviously upset about his statement as well. Not only that, but Eilidh had said something interesting... Something that Bast was already suspecting before...

"You have some explaining to do, mr. George..." Bast said, with a serious tone.

"And watch your tongue, Mr. George. Those aren't words one should say to a lady... Especially when said lady could easily kill him..." he continued.

"Now, leaving your rudeness aside... What exactly are you transporting? Surely you didn't expect me to believe that they are common trading goods when attacked by mercenaries this well equipped... It would be better for you to start speaking, George... It seems the girls are rather upset about what you said..." Bast said, carefully analyzing George's reactions.

Freyr

Just like the weird couple said, when Freyr and the group arrived on the place where the competition would be held, a clear and wide open green pasture, they could see a some people wearing eastern garbs, which were certainly not common around those parts. Freyr himself was allowed to join. He did receive quite a fair share of weird stares though, but in the end he was permitted to join the competition.

Freyr didn't want to sound arrogant or anything, but he was very confident in his skills. But the real problem wasn't the competition itself... The problem was getting hold of some of those arrows. The previous plan was simple, they would simply grab some and take them, but that plan was quickly scrapped when the announcer said that they weren't allowed to take arrows with them at all. Words of Sir Saburo Fujikiyo himself, the master craftsman responsible for making the arrows.

"Umm... It seems that it will be a bit harder than we previously thought..." Freyr said, looking to the group.

"I don't know how the competition will work but if we are allowed to take more than one shot, I can purposely miss one, sending the arrow flying far away so one of you could fetch... What do you think?" Freyr asked, looking to them.

Oh, you didn't need to change it at all. I was just mentioning bcos Karina is in a tough position right now as she doesn't trust anyone in the group (and with what just happened, it's even worse).

The thing with her age is fine! as I said, you didn't need to change anything from the start XD
Karina is a bit sensitive about the whole 'being called a kid' part because other officers look down upon her due to her age, despite her undeniable talent and intelligence.

Fiery red hair, hazel eyes and a delicately white skin coupled with an cute and pretty face, Nina is surely an eye candy. Standing at 1,68m, her athletic body has almost perfect dimensions, so much that it's almost that it was carefully calculated. An agile and compact build. While some say that it's not as pretty or 'alluring' as other women with big breasts and large hips, those who know how to look can see the beauty behind her body.

𝙿𝚎𝚛𝚜𝚘𝚗𝚊𝚕𝚒𝚝𝚢:

Nina is a happy girl, despite everything that happened to her. Always with a smile on her face, she loves company, has a tendency to always see the good side of everything and is rather flirty regarding members of the opposite sex who earns her attention. Just like her hair though, she has quite the fiery temperament. With strong opinions, she isn't the type of woman who would go back on her own words or flee from an argument. Despite this fact, she is extremely smart and very rarely looses her temper enough to impair her logical thinking. Ironically enough, the best way to extract information from her is by being friendly. Around those whom she considers being her 'friends' she is sometimes careless regarding information that should be confidential.

𝙱𝚒𝚘:

Born in a relatively wealthy family, Nina was always an incredibly smart girl. Being gifted with both a healthy and athletic body and smarts, she quickly made a name for herself in the academic community due to her innovative ideas of using bioware technology, concepts and technology together with cyberware. Due to that, as soon as she graduated herself, she was almost immediately showered with offers to work in many big corporations. The young Nina, not knowing how serious was working for a big megacorp, simply accepted the one that paid a good amount of money and gave her a bit of freedom for her to tinker with expensive tech without taking it off from her paycheck.

Fortunately for the big megacorp that hired her, Nina didn't care much at all about anything other than simply having enough money to buy all the high tech 'toys' (aka: very expensive and potentially dangerous stuff) to tinker with and to have enough free time for her hobbies (that, excluding things that were related to her work, included gymnastics, swimming & etc.) All in all, Nina was just a young, naive girl in the cruel, ruthless world of the megacorps. Being purposely left in the dark regarding what the company was doing with her technology, for a relatively long time, she didn't really care that much. It wasn't like she didn't suspected her technology was being used in weapons (she even designed some weapons herself in her free time) but she never expected it would come back to bite her one day.

For a long time, Nina managed to live away from the dirt and corruption that were everywhere. Protected by the very megacorp she worked at as a way to keep her just as naïve and oblivious to what was happening and simply continue creating new tech, she only came to realize that there was something wrong when she was kidnapped one day when she was on her way to the work and ordered to reveal the secrets of her technology to a rival megacorp under gunpoint. Obviously, to have such valuable information given to others would potentially mean the downfall of any corp. So instead of trying to save Nina, they instead... tried to silence her by sending a samurai to get rid of her by exploding the building she was being kept hostage at.

The assassination was believed to be successful, resulting in a big explosion that was masked as an accident related with fuel/gas. Unknowingly to the samurai, Nina was somehow... still alive. Awakening after a long time unconscious, she found herself barely alive, bleeding profusely and unable to stand up. In shock, Nina tried to shout for help, but nothing came out from her mouth. Crawling her way out of the ruined building, she tried her best to get some help, but she passed out due to the blood loss the moment she got out of it.

Some time passed and she found herself waking up in a hospital bed. Fortunately for Nina, she somehow managed to survive, but not without grave injuries. Metal shrapnel and the explosion itself completely ruined her legs beyond repair, severing nerves and breaking her femur to multiple pieces. Multiple metal fragments had also penetrated her chest. Amongst them, two became deeply lodged within her heart, damaging it and making it able to work only with a fraction of its previous efficiency. Although she was not in risk of dying anymore, her condition was still... very bad. Walking was simply impossible due to her wounds and any physical effort would quickly cause further complications due to her debilitated heart.

The following months after the accident were incredibly tough for Nina. With her own body ruined, she spent all her savings in the black market. Getting tech now that she wasn't affiliated with a megacorp anymore and was believed to be dead wasn't that easy. After some time, Nina managed to rebuild her legs and replace her heart. Finally after months of agonizing mental and emotional torture, Nina could finally feel 'whole' again. All the nerve wrecking stress that had piled up those months was finally going away. But that wasn't the end of all that. Nina couldn't go back to her old life anymore. She wasn't supposed to be alive and she had just enough credit to feed her for a few month after all the modifications... The only two things she knew to do were parkour and gymnastics and being a cybernetic specialist. Selling her tech on the black market wasn't an option because she was afraid someone would recognize who she was so she turned to the only alternative that she had found... Working as an information runner... She knew that being an information runner in the underworld was a dangerous job, so she started training on how to defend herself. Unarmed combat by using her new legs and her speed, hand to hand combat with knife and marksmanship with the crossbow of her own design.

After all that happened, Nina wasn't a naïve, defenseless girl anymore... The accident, being kidnapped and living in the underworld changed her. She knew how cruel the world could be and she would do whatever she needed to do to survive. Little by little, she became known as a very reliable information runner, able to deliver even dangerous and highly sought after packages. The few people who tried something funny to her also were quickly dispatched, making those who knew her to not let her cheerful behavior and pretty face to fool them.

𝚆𝚎𝚊𝚙𝚘𝚗(𝚜):
» Combat Knife

A normal, military type combat knife. Extremely sharp and reliable, but other than that, no special features.

» Custom made Crossbow

Semi auto, magazine fed crossbow built by Nina herself. The custom made parts and the exotic design makes it easy to wield and move around with. Silent, accurate and deadly, it boasts an unusually long range for a crossbow, being possible to use it even in long range shots without loss of accuracy due to the elongated barrel. All in all, it resembles a weird hybrid between a rifle and a crossbow.

𝙰𝚛𝚖𝚘𝚞𝚛:

» Lightweight armor plating resembling a suit. Aiming to offer a good protection without weighting down the user.

𝙲𝚢𝚋𝚎𝚛ware:

• Speedware (Sandevistan) reflex booster + Boostmaster.
• Muscle & Bone Enhancement (Grafted muscle, bone and muscle lace.)
• Variable-Chambered Heart & Hematological Replacement.
• Gyro-Stabilizer.
• Bio-cybernetic legs (Made/modified by herself, based off speeding bullet legs) & Talon feet.

» Cyberware Explanation

Focusing more in speed and agility than brute strength, the main point of her bodily modifications is to further enhance what she was so proud of before suffering the accident that ruined her legs: her agility, dexterity, balance and speed. The talon feet give her legs a surprisingly high combat capability while also helping her to climb & run through difficult terrain.

The custom made legs are part cybernetic, part biologic. No one knows why she didn't just amputated her legs and simply made a fully cybernetic legs, some say it was just a whim. Maybe as a way to say she didn't completely loose her legs and technically, they were still her original legs, which she was so proud of.

While her legs aren't affected by EMPs or jamming due to their bio-tech design, they are significantly 'harder' to repair than normal cybernetic legs due to how complicated their construction is, requiring something akin to an 'operation' (unfortunately, Nina is basically the only one who knows how they were built so it's improbable that others can fix them). The fact that her own blood runs through the bio cybernetic legs only make things worse, as blood loss can and will be a problem if left untreated. The light armor she uses on her legs protect her against some things, but anything bigger than a smg will probably go straight through them.

Thanks to her variable chambered heart, hematological replacement and relatively fast metabolism, especially when running, toxins, poisons and drugs are incredibly effective on her, acting and spreading much faster on her body. Lack of oxygen can also become a problem to Nina, especially on areas with too much smoke.

Ouch... Chres just struck a nerve calling Karina a 'kid'

Saying things like 'I couldn't die because I had to protect you' also doesn't help (she has a small complex about the whole age and size thing.)

There is also the fact that that Karina simply cannot trust Hark anymore. He pointed his weapon at her first. The 'group' is honestly breaking apart right now. Karina won't trust Hark, it doesn't matter what Chres says, and now that Chres said all this, including basically throwing on her face that he did 'save' them all she is even less inclined to stay with the group.

The situation is already very bad, having to worry not only with the Cultists, but with people who are supposed to be your allies is too much. The dangers far outweighs the benefits for Karina.
