Zach fidgeted in his seat, as he stared up at the satellite image. The vibe whiplash from sunny Aruba to undercover gala mission involving literal criminals was real, but he didn’t say anything at first. He was too busy processing everything. Especially the fact that he’d be masquerading as a spoiled rich kid. Which, let’s be honest, he could probably pull off in his sleep.

After Batman opened the floor, Zach finally raised a hand with an exaggerated motion, not quite sarcastic but not entirely serious either. ”Question, is this a ‘do not draw attention’ mission or a ‘draw attention but in character’ mission? Because if I’m playing a rich kid with too much money and no boundaries… I can absolutely make that work. But there’s a very thin line between ‘authentic’ and ‘headlines.’”

He let the question hang for a second, then added more seriously:

”And are we expected to stay in character at all times, or will there be safe zones for debriefing during the gala? Something tells me ‘bathroom break’ might turn into ‘plot twist’ in this place.”

Zach leaned back slightly in his chair. ”Also, not that I’m complaining, but you’re handing me a role that’s basically ‘Zachary Zatara gone wild.’ Just saying… don’t be surprised if I end up on some rich villain’s Instagram feed by the end of the night.”

He was ready. Nervous, but ready. And slightly thrilled. A secret island villain gala? That was so his kind of theater.

Valerian had just finished shaking Nils’ hand, which was very unlike the dainty diplomatic handshakes he was used to, when he heard Amelia’s voice from his left.

“I thought I told you, if you don’t want to be treated like a prince, you shouldn’t introduce yourself as one.”

Valerian froze. He pressed a hand to his chest, aghast. “I… I was only being honest! One should never lie about one’s identity… But I did say I did not want to be treated differently.”

He wilted. Visibly. Aurelia Rose landed on his head and patted his hair reassuringly.

Val shook it off. “Nils,” Val repeated, smiling again. “Charming name. And Clarissa, yes? A pleasure.” He dipped his head politely to Tors as well.

Then Amelia turned pale, and Valerian tensed. He didn’t know the story, but he could feel the weight of something behind it. She asked quietly, if they could avoid Florasong. His voice softened in a way it rarely did. “You don’t need a reason, darling. If you don’t want to go there, we won’t.”

Nils suggested Stararbor instead, and relief washed over Amelia. Valerian placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. “Stararbor it is,” he said firmly. “It sounds infinitely preferable to… whatever Florasong represents for you.”

Aurelia Rose hovered down to nuzzle Amelia’s hair.

Then Val straightened and winked at the group. “Lead on fellow trainers!”

Valerian had never been outside a city this long before.

He loved it.

He hated it.

He was absolutely not used to dirt paths and unpaved hills, but the scenic majesty of it all? Stunning. The very real possibility of stepping on a living rock and being body-checked by a furious Geodude? Less stunning.

“Marvelous!” he declares. “Rustic! Untamed! Very… brown.”

Then, he spots them. A young woman lying face first on the ground with a Wooper. A boy was crouched down poking her with a stick. Valerian approached the boy. “I beg your pardon. Are you sure it’s appropriate to be poking her like that?”

His parents insisted that magic was nothing but dangerous nonsense that had ruined their family once already. They cut ties with the magical side of the lineage, refused to speak Giovanni Zatara’s name in the house, and raised Zach to believe in practicality, stability, and staying out of trouble. Zach did none of those things. As a child, he treasured the few memories he had of his great-uncle Giovanni performing sleight-of-hand tricks at family gatherings, simple illusions that dazzled him more than anything else in his life. Giovanni was everything his parents weren’t: bold, charming, theatrical, larger than life. Zach never forgot it. He built a YouTube channel out of thrift-store props, a cheap ring light, and more confidence than sense. Over time his high-energy stage magic, dramatic flair, and signature gimmick, performing “spells” backwards in tribute to Giovanni, earned him a massive following. He became the internet’s favorite self-styled sorcerer, even if his magic was all smoke and mirrors. Everything changed during a livestream. Nervous, excited, and desperate to pull off a new trick, Zach fumbled. The chat teased him. His heart spiked. And in frustration he snapped one of his usual reversed phrases. This time with real emotion behind it. Before he understood what was happening, the card in his hand froze mid-air. The lights flickered. The air warped around him. A spark shot out from his fingertips. Something inside him finally woke up. Millions of viewers assumed it was CGI. Zach knew better. In a single night, everything changed. Not just because he got a ton of new followers after that. Zach didn’t know what this meant for his channel, his life, but he had real magic now, and he had no idea how to control it. Which meant his world was about to get a whole lot stranger. P L O T ( S ) & G O A L ( S ) P L O T ( S ) & G O A L ( S ) ________________________________________________________________________________________ Zach Zatara has so much potential, but canon DC does nothing with him. In most canon appearances, Zach is treated as little more than Zatanna’s bratty cousin. I’m here to correct that. I want to give Zach the arc he deserves. My main goal is to give Zach the coming-of-age arc he never received. A boy who spent his life pretending to be a magician suddenly forced to become one for real. He is not ready for the magical disasters he’ll get thrown into. I want him to learn to take magic seriously. I want him to meet his cousin properly at some point and learn about his magical legacy, and be a recurring character in her story sometimes. Eventually, he’ll join the Teen Titans, to learn teamwork, and discipline. Over time, become a hero in his own right.
