Hi. Someone needs to do something about the quality of the crayons at restaurants. The color doesn't even stick to the menu. How am I supposed to compete with a child with these?

As the convoy continued down the highway, the world around them slowly turned from the red heat and haze of the desert to a soft shade of gray. Thick cloud cover moved in overhead, pushing the harsh light of the sun aside to make way for a cool midday breeze. It nibbled constantly at exposed skin and pushed dust and loose pebbles across an old highway. It rattled the branches of dead trees lining the side of the road and would often howl through the open windows of the cars. Compared to the often dry and dusty heat of Tu Zin, the area outside Gao Ling was a stark contrast.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The dead city loomed into view on the right side of the road, slowly growing from a jagged silhouette on the horizon to the large structures they were, dangerously leaning into each other. By now, the group was close enough they could make out individual details on the desolate structures and, if they tried, could make out the past lives left behind beyond every broken window. By the time they reached their destination, they were less than an hour walk away, or a little over five minute drive, from the city.

The overpass that the group approached was similar in some ways to the one they had stopped at before. There were ramps on both sides, though these did not loop, and the road that crossed over the highway also framed the corridor underneath that traffic once passed through. Earlier reconnaissance from MOVA observed that all but one of these ramps were blocked, the exception being the Eastbound offramp, and that the road making up the overpass was only blocked going South. The road North heading into the city was open.

The six lane highway was split into two sets of three with a divider in the center separating what would have been the East and Westbound lanes. Cars were piled up here as well, significantly more than there had been at the rest stop, and for a while now the small convoy had been picking their way through these cars at a steady pace. As they drew closer, that pace slowed until finally coming to a halt just a few yards away from the stopped vehicle in their path.

At first glance, it all seemed like an obvious setup, but thanks to MOVA’s eyes, Feyi was confident the area was clear. She did not, however, want to stay in one spot exposed as they were for longer than they needed to, so as soon as her car stopped, she was out and moving.

”Tenet, with me,” she called to the man still climbing out of the passenger seat. ”And Takoa, climb up there and watch the South road.” Feyi nodded toward where the ramp met the overpass and Takoa, who was also still clambering out the back, gave her a nod in response. When he’d finally found his legs and had slung his rifle over his shoulder, he hopped the center divider and made off for his post. Feyi then pointed to the opposite end of the overpass where the offramp met the road heading North. ”We’ll need one more person up there to watch the road into the city and if one of you wants to help me figure out what we can do with this car..”

As she finished giving out directions, MOVA floated by her. She threw the drone a small wink and whispered a ”Thank you,” as she watched it return to Reman. ”Are you having fun yet, Reman? Does this remind you of when I used to take you around the Lower Ring?” She called out to him, flashing him a smile.

Tenet behind her moved past the vehicle to the otherside of the blockage with his handgun drawn. Although MOVA had reported that the area was clear, he wanted to be sure. He spent ample time checking around, inside and underneath the abandoned vehicles in the area and for now, wasn’t finding anything of note.

”Mire’s been working me like a dog.” Jin complained in response as he pulled the car into the rest stop next to Feyi. The Kyoshi’s engine hummed to a stop, the digital light filtering in from the armored windows flickering off, shrouding the interior of the car in darkness before Jin popped the door open. ”Between that and bending, I’m pretty sure I’ve been putting in longer hours than when I was actually employed.”
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________
”You like being busy.” Sumire retorts, ”You said it makes the days go by faster.“

”Yeah, when I’m getting paid,” Jin grumbles as he pushes the driver side door open, natural light quickly flooding the dark interior of the car. ”Stretch your legs.” Jin said- more a command than a suggestion, ”Especially you, Stickball Star. It's a long drive, you guys’ll thank me later.”
canaryrose
As soon as the car came to a stop, Chu popped the car door open and hopped out, unfolding herself from the backseat and stepping out into the sandy parking lot. “I think your pay might be being alive,” she joked, a small smirk coming over her face. It faded as she turned her head to look at their surroundings, her gaze softening as she took it all in. It was so wide here, so open. Chu could see all the way into the horizon, the blue of the sky uninterrupted by skyscrapers or tall buildings. She had lived in the Middle Ring all her life. All this space felt… overwhelming.

Chu stretched some, touching her toes and walking around the Kyoshi. She did need to stretch, after all that time in the car, and all the time in the car in her future. After a moment of idle exercise, Chu noticed something on the horizon. … Buildings? Her first instinct was that she was looking at Ba Sing Se, and a jolt of terror ran through her, before she realized that they were nearly on the other side of the continent. She pointed to the outline. “What’s that?” she asked. “Looks like a city.”
Exit
That would be Goa Ling. The next largest city outside Ba Sing Se other than Old Republic City, as far as I know at least. I haven’t really had the time to see more of the world other than just this desert.” She paused for a moment as she continued to stare into the distance through her binoculars. ”But from what I’ve been told, I really want to avoid getting close to that city,” she said, dropping the binoculars. She walked back around to the driver side door of the jeep and pulled it open before retrieving from inside the vehicle a folded map. Walking back around to the hood, she folded it open, laid it on top and used the binoculars to hold down one of the corners. Her fingers traced a dark line that marked the road they were on. That road split into three with one turning sharply Southward and the other two continuing west. The center line skirted around the edges of the city while the last line seemed to enter the city proper.
Theyra
Reman stood by, studying the outline of the city. ”Goa Ling, I have heard of that city and I do know some about it.” He could know more on his part but his family’s library is limited on that subject. If only the wasteland was safer then he could maybe explore and see what remains in the old city. Reman thought to himself as he continued to look at the city. Then he joined up with the rest and started looking at the map.
canaryrose
Gao Ling? The name rang a bell, but Chu had never paid much attention in high school history class. She did know, though, that there weren’t supposed to be cities habitable outside of Ba Sing Se. That all other places were dangerous, contaminated with the raw power of the synergy bombs they themselves had dropped on the rest of the world. She had assumed that Tu Zin might’ve proved that wrong, but… maybe there were some fundamental truths about this world. Looking at the jagged skyline in the distance and hearing Feyi’s words, Chu too thought that she’d rather not find out if anyone lived in Gao Ling today. Or any day.
Passable Writer
“The sooner that we can pass the city, the better,” Vasra said, shivering despite the warmth of the day. Concrete teeth cut into the skyline, reminding her of the maw of a predatory creature. Some extinct beast from the old books that she had once read.
Exit
”I’m seeing smoke on eighty west. Hard to tell exactly what it is but it could be blocking our path or we could be dealing with something else. The road North of it will put us in the city but there are side streets we should be able to use to keep our stay short.”
Theyra
“I am not sure of what to pick since I am still new to the wasteland so I will be leaving my vote up to you Feyi.” Saying with confidence as he trusted her and she knows more than he. Then a thought came to mind, ”You think Mova could be of use here to see what the smoke is Feyi? Like some recon just in case it is more than smoke?”
Exit
Feyi’s eyes lit up. ”Oh yeah. Absolutely. We could get closer to about here…” She pointed to a spot on the map where the line marking the highway split into two. ”And deploy Mova. Then decide which way we’re going after we have a look. You sure the drone is going to be okay though? She’s been acting weird, you said.”
Theyra
Reman sighed, ”Yeah, I know Mova is starting to glitch, but I figure that she is still useful despite her condition. It is not bad now, so I think we can risk using her.”
canaryrose
“Can’t be that bad,” Chu said. “She found Feyi and then came back for us after the sandworm. Sounds like she works just fine.”
Theyra
He nodded and smiled, when Chu, spoke up for Mova. ”Mova would appreciate the confidence boost.” Reman looked at the map again, scanning it and then speaking to the group. ”So, unless anyone objects to using Mova, I think we have a plan. At least up to the smoke, and well, is there anything else we missed or need to discuss?”
canaryrose
Chu took a moment, looking at the map again, and then Gao Ling in the distance. There were two strategies here, two outcomes. Both were complete unknowns. It unsettled her. “Let’s see what’s up with the smoke first. Then we can decide,” she said. “I’m not keen on fucking with the synergy nightmare city over there, but if we have to, I think we can deal.”

Summary. The group takes a quick fifteen minute break at the rest stop as Feyi reviews their path ahead. Spotting a strange pillar of smoke, a decision is made to utilize MOVA to investigate it and to help determine which path forward the group should take.
Prompt.
The group are back on the road and the convoy continues West until they reach the junction Feyi had pointed too earlier. From there, Reman deploys Mova who scouts the source of the smoke.

Not unlike the overpass of the rest stop, there is another similar overpass ahead with yet another assortment of abandoned vehicles huddled around the base. There is a little more room for vehicles to pass through, however, there just happens to be an SUV currently in the way. Judging by its outward appearance, the vehicle seems to have been only recently abandoned. There are treads on the tires that all seem to be in fair condition. It seems relatively clean and well maintained compared to the other vehicles around it that had been left to rot for 100 years. Upon closer inspection, the interior seems mostly empty. Smoke is billowing from under the hood. The SUV looks as though it could possibly be moved out of the way.

There are no other paths around this blockade besides the alternate route into the city.

Jin’s return didn’t register with Nelu until he felt something pressing against his face. Something soft and pleasant smelling closed around his nose and mouth and for a brief moment, quiet panic set in when he thought something very specific was happening to him. When he finally realized that it was only a mask being fixed to his face, he immediately buried the embarrassing thought, forgetting it along with the mountains of other useless thoughts that had been piling up since his mind had been deprived of oxygen.

Clean air finally found his lungs and as a clarity set in, he realized a little too late that everyone else in the room had already cleared out. The only people left were himself, a very concerned looking Jin, Hunang… and Katakuri. When the Firebender arrived, Nelu could not remember, but he knew the man was definitely standing there and not a figment of his imagination.

”Kata?”

”Hello, Nelu.”

”Wh- what is going on? What are you doing down here?”

”I’m sorry, but I was forced to choose between my duty to the LSF and my duty to my family.” Katakuri began peeling off his dinner jacket. ”I hope that when it comes time for you to decide, the choice is made easier.”

”What the hell are you talking about? What happ-” Nelu was interrupted by the sound of gunfire erupting somewhere down the hall. Though slightly muffled, Nelu knew almost immediately that it was coming from the dance floor Jin and Nelu had been in earlier. Judging by the way the bodies in the other room were moving erratically and then suddenly stopping, he also knew whoever was in there now was a serious problem for Hunang’s men. Neither Hunang nor Katakuri reacted, but a third man did enter shortly after the shooting began. Nelu recognized him as the man who had been guarding the entrance to the very chamber they were in. A large individual with short hair that had grayed with age and a face etched with his many years of life lived under Ba Sing Se. Despite the appearance of his age, his body had been well maintained and it was no wonder he was still in charge of guarding one of the more important rooms in the Core. The details of the man’s arm were also more clear in the lighting of the room. It was slightly larger than his right and although it seemed the pieces used to create the entire prosthetic were not cheap, the work done to connect them was subpar. Wires protruded from junctions that should have been tucked away and in some sections, the servos under the metal frame was visible. Visible under this tank top, it was clear that his entire left arm had been replaced and some of the metal paneling reached across his upper left chest and shoulder.

”Shao?” Hunang said without looking at the man as he approached.

”We’ve sealed the tunnel. Sonam is leading them away right now but the two Lotus agents are cutting through our men. I suggest you-...”

Hunang held up a hand and simply nodded. ”We’ve done what we can. Now we prepare to meet our guests.”

Grinding rock and shifting stone met Zhen and 141 as they stepped off the main floor of the club. Behind them, the screaming and shouting and the barking gunfire from before had been replaced by a deathly silence. Ahead of them, the hallway that had been there suddenly rolled away, replaced with another that was made entirely of rock and led straight to a warmly light chamber ahead. At the other end stood three figures: Katakuri, a woman with white hair and striking green eyes, and Shao.
Mistress Dizzy
Deeper into the chamber, Zhen and 141 could make out Jin, who was sat beside Nelu with their hip pressed against his. They were fidgeting, restless, false-blue eyes fixed on what was ahead. Nelu on the other hand had beads of sweat on his head. He seemed slightly taxed, obvious even with the mask covering his face.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________
This had gone so wrong. They were all going to die tonight, weren't they? They - No... NO... Jin breathed in slowly and carefully, savoring the deliciously clean air provided by the mask. I'm alive. Nelu is alive. There's less people… and they think I'm a Bender. I can use this. We're not out of options... The worst thing that they could do in this moment was roll over and beg in advance.
Exit
”Please. Join us.” Hunang beckoned the two in the hall and 141 began moving toward her.
Fiber
There was a basic rule from training running through Zhen’s mind, one so basic no one could ever forget it: Never willingly fight an earthbender in a building structure made from bendable material. While the movement of the corridor did not confirm it entirely, her that one of the adversaries was an earthbender sky high. Immediately, she focused on the air supply ducts, those were tempting, but it was important to not let the enemy know their plan.

Zhen walked slowly, carefully, letting 141 lead the way and not entering the doorway just yet, having measured how fast the room moved before. She waited until she was close and said “Where’s Chosah? I was looking forward to welcoming her into the LSF. Maybe I’ll find her to be a better student than her father.” Was she serious about what she said? It didn’t matter, so long as it served its purpose of agitating Kata.

As she spoke, a small burst of data transmitted silently from Zhen to 141, the bandwith was pitiful enough to only allow a few bytes, but it could hold a simple command.

Katakuri deposited a necktie on the ground on top of his dinner jacket and began pulling on the first button of his shirt. By now, his sleeves had already been rolled up past the elbows. His dress pants and dress shoes, however, were still on.

”Now that she is safe, she will be,” Katakuri replied smoothly. ”I’m only sorry I will not live to see it.”

”Kata, listen to me. Whatever happened we can fix this.” The reality of the danger Nelu was in was further clouded by his confusion. Hunang was dangerous enough on her own having the heavy advantage of her homefield. Katakuri however tipped the scales even further in her favor. But the ‘why’ he was down here and siding with Hunang was not something he could resolve. It didn’t make any sense. Then there was 141 and Zhen who had arrived right on his heels. Some small amount of relief found him when he realized that help had arrived despite everything and yet, he knew he was still missing something.

”What the hell happened? Is Chosah…?”

Hunang spoke next, the tone of her voice now less than patient. ”I said, ‘join us’.”

Her upturned fist was thrust into the air in front of her and then pulled under her ribs, coaxing a slab of dirt underneath Zhen an inch out of the ground before it began sliding down the corridor and taking Zhen with it. Behind Zhen, a large block of dirt was also torn out of the ground. It pulled up the concrete and metal slabs of the club floor as it tilted vertically to become a wall. It too began to slide forward as Hunang intended to seal the corridor into the chamber and everyone inside it.
Mistress Dizzy
Jin froze in their fidgeting at the sight of Hunang effortlessly bending the solid dirt and concrete beneath them. Yep, this was going to be a problem. "Damn." That single word was clearly full of wonder and respect, and no small amount of fear.
Fiber
The corridor was no place to be, and Zhen didn’t waste time staying in it. She ran, with airbending assisted speed, and hurtled into the chamber. Barely in the door, she leapt to the platform above, keeping an eye on Kata and the earthbender. In the middle of her jump, she twisted and flicked her arms to fire off two air blasts. Both were aimed at the earthbender, but one was angled with the aid of her remote bending to come from the side, the other came straight on, but the air wasn’t the only thing it carried. As part of the motion, she triggered the shot from the bolo launcher on her forearm, carrying the projectile forward alongside the airblast. She would need to reload before firing again, but it was worth it if it could disable an enemy early on. Hopefully, she could worry about that when she had a better view of the situation.
Exit
Hunang dropped the block of dirt and leaned over to avoid the air blast hurtling toward her, but the speed with which Zhen moved caught her by surprise. Hunang’s reaction, though quick, wasn't quite fast enough to move her entirely out of the way. However, Shao next to her moved as well, reaching across Hunang with his forearm and into the path of the projectile. It caught some of the dense air but also blocked the bolas. The ball and wire wrapped itself tightly around his arm on contact.

Hunang had no time to appreciate being saved, for just as she registered the bolas around Shao's arm did the second blast of air connect with her face. It felt like being punched, the force of which threw her head further to the left and her upper body sharply toward the ground. She immediately threw her left foot out to catch herself, slamming her heel into the ground with enough force to crack it. Her eyes fixed on the airbender, standing now on one of the higher raised platforms. Once upon a time, a most prized possession of hers had been displayed in that very spot. A visage of a man she had once very much admired and yet now that sacred space had become desecrated by an intruder’s very presence. Her wide eyed expression, which had always danced around the edges of unhinged, was seething.
Mistress Dizzy
"This is so not my fight. Cap, how're you feeling? Any better?" They nudged him in a deliberate way.
Exit
”This is everyone’s fight now, Jin. I have to be,” Nelu replied, watching the fight unfolding quickly. He observed Hunang; both her arms were tucked under her ribs and both hands were clenched. Despite the anger clear in her eyes, she seemed to be focusing on something rather than reacting. Shao however, moved to react for her, raising the arm not ensnared and pointing a closed metal fist at Zhen. From his elbow, a small barrel appeared, but before he could do anything, his body tensed and he froze. His eyes snapped to Jin and Nelu where Nelu was now on his feet with an outstretched hand pointed in his direction.

Katakuri, who was standing a few feet away from Hunang and Shao, turned his attention to who he deemed the more pressing threat. 141 had by now left the corridor and was moving swiftly toward all three in the center of the room. Katakuri knew full well that if 141 wasn’t handled now, not only was there little distance between them and it, it alone could possibly finish the fight faster than it had begun. By the time the Zhen had perched herself up on her platform, Katakuri had finished preparing his attack.

”Now!”

Nelu heard Katakuri's familiar voice before he saw what was happening. Whatever confidence he had found was quickly drained from his body as he watched in dazed confusion Shao’s left arm begin to move. As if it were not attached to the frozen body it belonged to, the metal fist and the barrel connected to it turned toward Nelu. Shao struggled to smile and then closed his eyes as behind him, light streaked from Katakuri to 141 and the chamber they were all in flashed a deafening white.

Katakuri had detonated the two distortion grenades and one smoke grenade on 141's chest. When the smoke finally cleared and the bright white glare faded from the eyes of those less prepared, Jin would find Nelu unconscious on the ground, a blood covered and barbed tipped wire sliding back into the arm of Shao. Zhen would see 141 buried with its arms up to its chest and Katakuri walking up to it, a thin beam of plasma or a highly concentrated blade of fire not unlike that of a blowtorch.

Zhen was disoriented by the blast, like everyone else. The smoke filled the room but she remembered where Hunang had stood, and then she decided to try something bold. With her head still ringing, she jumped off the platform, and started spinning in midair. She focused her mind only on the motion, and calling up the wind around her, enveloping herself in a vortex and guided herself through the air, seeking her target. When the smoke cleared, when the disorientation went away, she had one goal and one plan: Grab Hunang by the neck and then, with the aid of vortex and gravity, send her feet off the ground and her head straight into the hard floor below.
Exit
Hunang had been too focused on burying 141 that when the smoke cleared and she turned back to find Zhen, the airbender was already nearly on top of them. Hunang instinctively threw an arm up, drawing a spire of dirt out of the ground and into Zhen’s path, but the reaction was too slow. Zhen flew right over Hunang’s defense and wrapped her arms around the woman’s neck. Suddenly, Hunang’s world was spun upside down. Her feet left the ground and her head was forced down into the dirt.

Contact with the ground was anything but gentle. As Hunang's head met with rock, the sound of her forehead’s impact made a sickening crack. However, her hands made contact with the floor too. The ground fragmented violently, breaking apart as both women landed in the center of what appeared to be a small crater. Hunangs body coiled into itself, her legs tucking into her chest as she rolled out of Zhen’s maneuver and into a knelt position facing away from Zhen. Again her arms were immediately tucked into her ribs, but this time there was a visible reaction in the room. Cracks in the newly formed crater, those positioned directly under Zhen, began to glow red. Then, Hunang thrust her hands up into the air, coaxing out of the ground a pillar of lava.

Mistress Dizzy
The flashbangs had been a surprise. Jin had enough time to turn their head against the closest cover - Nelu himself. It wasn't quite enough to fully prevent their vision from getting distorted. Hell, their ears were still ringing. A glance told them that the Captain was still breathing. That would have to be enough for now; Jin didn't know the first thing about medical aid aside from making people need it.

"Ooh, big scary cy-man." Their eyes locked onto the bruiser who had hit Nelu, cold and focused. "Thanks for showing your hand. How about I show you mine?" Hunang's crew weren't the only ones who knew how to use chaos. It had taken a bit of work to loosen it without moving their arms to actually retrieve the emergency weapon hidden under their disguise. A folding knife, with an off-white blade that gleamed in the light. The hilt was tucked neatly into Jin's palm.

This was going to be difficult, but the Roach in them refused to show fear. "I coulda been home by now." They crouched low, ready to use their petite size to their advantage. And then, without hesitation, they darted forward into the fray.
Exit
”How about I send you home now, little frog,” Shao said, his smile widening as Jin began to close the distance. ”That’s right… Sonam told me who you ARE!” The last word was screamed as he swung his metal arm downward at an approaching Jin intending to crush her like a bug.

Opposite the chamber, Katakuri approached a half buried 141 and pointed his palm at the struggling beast. The small blade of fire in his hand grew rapidly, turning into a searing torch of heat perfectly shaped like a blade nearly five feet in length. Katakuri yelled in exertion, his voice drowned amidst the roar of the fire and the sound of metal splitting. Then 141 began to scream too. For the first time since any of the LSF agents had begun working together, 141’s pain could be heard as clear as anyone else's, echoing endlessly against the walls of the chamber and loud enough to be nearly as disruptive as the grenades.

“Chae-Won,” she told him. It was the most she’d gotten out of him since meeting him. Not that she’d been interrogating him or anything, but… still. This was her best chance yet to learn about him and this place.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________
’The uh… the hotel… the Duster Hotel... it’s not a place.’ That was what that bastard waterbender had told her. There were too many things that could mean, and all of them were beyond her to try and figure out without a better hint. It left her wondering, though. If this wasn’t a place, then was Peng not really a person? She could imagine a dozen theories, most of which made her shudder with dread or disgust. She needed to know, though. Apparently it was the only way out.

Would getting out matter, though? How much could she really accomplish even if she did?

“But what about you? If you helped all your friends, isn’t your job done? When do you get to leave? Do you… want to leave?” she asked him.
Exit
Peng seemed to think really hard about the question before giving Chae-Won an answer. He turned to look at her and simply shook his head. ”Naaaope! I think I like et here. Et's mah home! Et takes care of me.” He then walked over to the island counter. ”Apple!” He yelled.

The depression in the center was empty one moment and the next, there was a plate with an apple. Nothing had moved. Nothing had shifted. No one had walked in and placed the food where it was now. It was simply there when only a moment ago it wasn’t. Peng walked up and confidently plucked the fruit from the plate as if the whole exchange was normal and then held the apple up for Chae to take. ”Yuh hungry yet?”

Before Chae could refuse or accept, the apple suddenly slipped from his fingers. Whatever focused excitement he had before was replaced by a concerned look. His eyes, still on Chae, began to focus on something past her as if he were looking through the woman instead of at. He pressed a hand to his chest. ”...Uh... So-... sometheng's happuhning...et hurts.”

ALICE standard issue 9mm handgun. Silver hollow-point munitions.
Longsword. Concealment via rectangular case measuring 150cm or nearly five feet.

None.

The following is an excerpt from agent's intake interview:
Why did you join ALICE?

"It was more of an obligation to my uh... a family. I come from a long line of traditional 'hunters' as they were once known. We have a whole history of doing similar work, for better or worse. Most of us operate in Avelion where regulation is loose, but I decided to join ALICE hoping to do some actual good. It's less about the 'love of the hunt' for me."

I don't want you! Go away!_____I don't want you! Go away!
______________________________________________________________________________________________________.
The descent of the bird was horrific, even more so when she realized that the creature was in fact charging into the barrier, and although the surge of relief when the barrier held was a short but welcome distraction, the aroma that engulfed her was not.

She coughed and then coughed and then coughed again and again and again, but try as she might to close her lungs or hold her breath or do anything but breathe, she could not. As if on its own her body continued to drink the cursed air, pulling the strange mist into her mouth as if she'd been starved of oxygen. It burned going down and it burned in her chest and all too quickly that burning sensation took over everything. She found herself unable to think. Not on the strange occurrences around her or the fact that she still had no name. Not on the flame-head or the weird woman crawling into corpses. The one with wings or the one who'd opened themselves up with a touch of their finger. The emotionless one. The men with weird speak or white air or the other who seemed mostly normal. All of them; all of it fell away.

Wracked in pain and confusion, her mind collapsed to a pinpoint where the only thing she could think about was the inferno in her throat and lungs and the deafening noise of fire and wind dancing chaotic around her. She dropped to her knees and threw her head back with mouth open wide, unable to stop herself now from consuming whatever was wafting off the creature. Through some small amount of will-power she struggled to maintain, she was able to grab at her own throat as if she meant to tear it out. Through her watered eyes she observed the barrier beginning to crack.

... Go... Away...

”I’m telling you, Jin was floored when he realized who you were,”
canaryrose
Really?”
vietmyke
Sumire was happily chatting away to anyone who would listen during the drive to the forest, the bunny ears on her helmet flopping excitedly as the animated young woman was basically permanently turned around from her spot in the passenger seat, peering into the back bench. Her current target of conversation was Chu Hua, whom she was animatedly yapping at, much to Jin’s chagrin- but she couldn’t see the red of his face behind his polarized helmet. Thus, as though pretending to not grasp the concept of object permanence, Sumire decided to act as though he didn’t exist in that moment. ”All he listened to out in the desert were podtalks and shoutcasts about Stickball. I said if he wanted an autograph he should just ask, but he said it would’ve been too awkward given everything that’s gone down. I think that’s silly and he should-”

”Dammit Mire- Ignore her!” Jin grunted without looking over his shoulder, his faceplate polarized enough that his expression was invisible to the others, though one might reasonably guess what his face looked like. ”Don’t make me stick you in Feyi’s jeep.”

”You. Wouldn’t. Dare.” The bunny ears whipped back towards the front.
canaryrose
Chu let a small smirk cross her face as she listened to Sumire recount how starstruck Jin had been. She was enjoying this- not only because it was funny to see Jin embarrassed, but because she just liked being talked to. Especially in this car. She had refused to sit in the trunk, where she probably would have fit a bit more, so Chu was jammed up between the right window, the passenger seat, and Weiyuan, who had been forced to sit in the middle. It was an uncomfortable ride, and not just because of how tight it was.

“Did he figure that out before or after he nearly kicked me out of the car?” Chu joked, making what she hoped was eye contact with Jin in the rear view mirror. That day felt like eons ago, really, but she still didn’t know Jin too well. Didn’t know any of them. “I think I’m well beyond being a celebrity at this point, though. I was a firebender way before I was ever on TV, and that kind of seems like the part of me that matters, now. An autograph would be kind of weird if you’re seeing so much of me.”

Plus, you practically have an autograph on the floor of your trunk.
vietmyke
”Not that it matters- nor am I apologizing,” Jin clarified, ”I didn’t know it was you yelling at me- I got shot in the head, and heard someone yelling at me.” He tapped at a corner of the now smoothed glass of his faceplate that had previously been cracked. Crazy to think that it was only a week ago- it felt like a subjective lifetime ago now. ”So I yelled back. Deal it, take it. But yes, we were aware of who you were.”

”We’d figured it out when you strolled up into the campsite.” Sumire nodded helpfully, ”Firebender celebrity is still a celebrity, you stuck out like a sore thumb.”
canaryrose
“Yeah, you and half the camp did,” Chu said, letting out a small laugh at the memory. It wasn’t a happy one, but in retrospect… yeah, it was kind of funny that two pro sports stars had just walked into a camp in the Wastes. “We had more than a few people come up to us and try and talk to us, actually. But I was spent at that point. Didn’t care, neither did Kanna. We just wanted to… I dunno, be safe, I guess.” Chu let that hang for a moment. Were they even really safe now? Could she say she had gotten everything she wanted? No, no she couldn’t.
vietmyke
”I dunno about Jin, but I’d still take an autograph!” The smaller girl remarked brightly, turning her head to show off the smooth white face of the side of her helmet and tapped it.

”Mire, quit bugging her.” Jin scolded the younger Piperunner before finally glancing up at the mirror to make what appeared to be eye contact, if still through his polarized glass.
canaryrose
She quirked a brow at Sumire. “I’ll give you an autograph if you want, but I dunno how much resale value it’ll have, kid,” she joked, taking a glance at the mirror when Jin did. She smirked.

“Got a favorite team, Jin? Maybe we can still pick up radio this far out… or I could tell you all the dirty secrets and shit.”
vietmyke
”I’m a Cabbage Corp. guy- Nal Nid’s got a nasty swing, even if he is a bit of a prick. Mire’s team is-”

”Turtleducks!” Sumire proclaimed loudly and proudly, a lower ring fan through and through- and likely just as rowdy, ”LETS GO DUCKS!” the bunny ears flopped erratically as Sumire began pumping her fists as though she were preparing to start cheering and her passenger seat was in fact a stadium box.
canaryrose
“Ugh, you guys are those people,” she groused, joking. Stickball team rivalries- it was the one thing guaranteed to pull everyone together. A common topic. A good common topic, for people she knew nothing about. “Jin- you’re just plain wrong. Nal Nid is a prick and is mediocre at best. Your guys’ defense fucks me up every time though, I’ll give you that. And, the Ducks… well.” She winked at Sumire in the mirror. “They’re good. Give me a hard game. Not as good as the ‘Moles, though.”
Passable Writer
Vasra flickered to life, weariness fading from her body, as she focused on the conversation. Losing a patient was hard. And the girl that died in her hands still flashed before her eyes when sleep overwhelmed her.

Summary. A little after two hours on the road, the group approach a rest stop where they can take a quick break.
Prompts.
The small convoy picks their way carefully through the abandoned vehicles on the road, eventually reaching the looped off ramp and making it safely into the rest stop without incident.

The rest stop itself is little more than a singular rectangular building with clearly marked areas for restrooms and a section in-between where people could sit. A dirt patched area extends from one side of the building at an angle, enclosing a section of the road where cars could park. It had obviously at one point in another life been grass. The dead trees are the only remaining sign that there had once been plant life here.

Scattered around the stop are a plethora of abandoned vehicles. All of them seem to be picked clean. Judging by the arrangement of the vehicles both in the rest stop and in the immediate area, it seems that in the early days of the war, the more ill prepared people fleeing the nearby city of Gao Ling ended up here, regrouping with friends and families and making plans for what was next. Eventually enough people had gathered that it turned into a temporary camp. Over time, people left out of necessity, some people tried to make the rest stop a permanent home but years of surviving saw it abandoned soon after. The signs of this are all here, though they've nearly faded completely away after nearly 100 years left alone.

Passing around the rest stop is the road that becomes the overpass and continues into the distance, and to the West, the highway that leads to their destination. In the far distance, the subtle outline of a city is visible.

Feyi parks her jeep at the end of the rest stop with the front of the vehicle facing West. She gets out and studies the path ahead through a pair of binoculars. Tenet stands nearby and Takoa wanders off to take a piss. She informs everyone that they'll be back on the road in fifteen.

Tu Zin, had been a fresh start. A welcome relief after all the fear. But there was work to do. There were people to treat. Doctors were rare in the wilds. And she had not been idle. It was the least she could do. No one seemed particularly happy when she had demanded to go with the other newcomers. It was an unnecessary risk, she knew. It was selfish of her. Better to keep someone as valuable as a doctor safe. She knew that. However, she couldn't abandon her companions. They had saved her. They felt safe. She liked them.

She shifted, leaning over one of the battered headrests that separated the baggage compartment from the front of the Kyoshi.

"My older brother used to take me to Stickball games. Nelu loved the Badgermoles. However, he always said no one was as good as Liang Shi, though,” she added with a smirk.

“I still remember the giant poster of her that he had in his bedroom. It was more than a little awkward when I walked in on him kissing it,” Vasra said laughing into her hand.
Exit
Conversation was interrupted briefly when Feyi’s voice crackled over the radio. ”We’re pulling over at that rest stop up ahead.”

The road continued under the overpass before looping back around on the far side and connecting with the small gathering of buildings off to the side of the road. A similar looped road connected back to the highway that continued Westward. All along the road and in both directions, cars were densely packed together and at times seemingly, haphazardly stacked. So close were these cars parked that it was impossible to navigate through besides the single lane path that was carved out of the other vehicles. It was a tight fit, but both the Kyoshi and the jeep could make it through.
Theyra
Reman so far in the trip had chosen to remain silent, busy in the middle of his own thoughts as he watched the scenery pass by and change. He was still listening to what the others were saying but Reman is not that much of a stickball fan. That was more the interest of his older brother though Reman has seen some games out of respect for his family but it mostly fails to keep his interest. So he had little to add to the group’s conversation.

Though he would chuckled briefly at one thought about stickball For. Reman knows his brother would be mega jealous that he is hanging out with the Chu Hua Yuan. His brother being a big fan of hers and now Reman is the one travelling and doing stuff with her and not him. Granted Reman is not sure how his brother would feel about Chu being a bender and maybe it is best that stays that way if he does not know for his own sake.

Still, when Feyi got on the radio about the rest stop and Reman got out of his head. Studying the scene as he wondered what could have caused a old traffic jam that made it that they could barely pass through. ”So how is everyone doing so far?” Reman asked the group as he looked at the rest stop. “Besides stickball and I say so far so good.”

- Probably best case scenario for word wrap. I can [sub] more
(hehe) but the line break now looks nice with paragraphs.
- I learned that some tags protect the content inside from
manipulation outside those tags. So, if I quote text inside the
table and then shift the entire table down with sub tags, the text
will not also be 'subbed' further.
- Sub tags attached to table will shift images and shrink the
nested table. To protect nested table without shifting it to the
right with a quote bar, I've used header tags. Text inside nested
table is now font used in headers.
- Also had to manipulate the bar above body of text with header
tags so font is changed there too.
