Digimon: Recompilation

Key themes

IC: Adventure, moral complexity, and psychological tension. Expect battles that will make you question your past choices, ethical dilemmas, and moments where "doing the right thing" is anything but clear-cut, all influencing how the game's world evolves.
OOC: Promoting player-to-player interaction and collaboration.
Welcome

Welcome to the experiment.

This game takes a different approach to how Digimon games are usually run on the Guild: Instead of one player writing both sides of the classic Digidestined/Partner Digimon pair, each side will be written by different players. This means your most important character relationship will be driven by collaboration, not solo writing.

Other options are available too - Spirit wielders and Wild Digimon. The core of this game is to experiment with different ways of playing in the Digimon setting.

Setting

The Digital World

It is unknown when, by whom or why the Digital World began. It is a realm existing hidden from humanity, quietly existing in their collective information systems. But now, the Digital World is in danger. Corrupted zones, where Digimon mutate unpredictably, glitches appear, and order is threatened, are spreading like a plague. Initially, everything seemed manageable, as powerful Digimon took it upon themselves to combat this emerging threat, and for a moment, they managed. Yet despite their effort, more and more of the world is being corrupted.

The Digidestined

And now the Digital World itself cried out for help, summoning and bestowing what power it could still offer onto a set of what would hopefully be its saviors - the Digidestined.

These saviors were selected because they are motivated to restore the Digital World. Their motivations are up to you though. Are they the altruistic hero? In it for the love of the game? Or do they think that they need to save the Digital world so there is something left to rule?

There are four character type options available in this game. More details are provided within each character sheet template.
  • Digidestined human - Your Tai, Rika or Marcus. The human who has been summoned to the Digital World and bonded with a partner to allow them to Digivolve quickly and aid the Digital World.
  • Partner Digimon - The other half of the bond. A Digimon who has been given a chance to make a difference, if only they can grow tight with their partner. Legend says that a partnership with a digidestined human allowa one to digivolve at unprecedented speed. This partnership can take any such canon form, from the OG friendships between Man and Mon, through a Tamer swiping cards, to a temperamental character using the raw power of their emotions to provide D.N.A. charge.
  • Spirit wielder - Season 4 character type. A human of a different sort, one who has been recognized for not being above putting their own back to work and life on the line. These Digidestined use spirits of fallen Digimon to become Human-Digimon hybrids to aid them in their mission. That is, if they can find spirits to use, and convince or control them well enough to aid them.
  • Wild Digimon - There are still heroes and powers native to the Digital World. Perhaps you are a former Mega who lost too many times and devolved, given another chance at greatness. Perhaps you are an idealistic rookie, who has been set on a path to make a difference. Or maybe you are just a mon who thinks they could do a better job of telling others what to do. Whatever the reason, you are a Digimon that has been picked to try and fix their world.

Your role

You are a Digidestined - whether a Digimon or a human - summoned in hopes of removing the corruption and restoring the Digital World. Early on, a powerful figure, Dominimon, speaks to you and offers guidance: His piece of the world is still safe, well-ordered, and defended, but it is under threat from a neighboring corruption zone. He entrusts you with investigating and neutralizing this growing danger, providing training, provisions, and support, before you set off on your journey...

GM noticeboard

Latest updates:
11/10/2025 - I'm setting October 18th as deadline for human and digimon partner concept submissions. Afterwards, we'll establish the pairs, so that the partnered folk have time to work on their CS before the game starts.

Submissions for wild digimon and spirit wielders are open right until we start, of course.

Story timeline

@LaserGunPewPew

That kinda describes all of the seasons xD But yeahthe one where they combine, like DNA digivolution but on a massive scale. I didn't see that season but I believe at one point like every digimon combined into one being or something to that end.
Yeah in Czechia we also only got the first two seasons. Which is a shame because Tamers were deliciously dark, and frontier is cool as a concept, though yeah, the characters/stories could use a bit of a spit shine.

One thing I am gonna say up front with regards to this game: I have no clue how to even begin putting in digi-fuse, so xros wars style characters are probably going to be off limits, unless somebody comes up with a workable concept.
Alright. I'm tracking more interest than I expected by launch already, good thing I have some things ready in advance I guess

I'm aiming to put up the OOC and Discord tomorrow, so you lot can go over and comment on some of the mechanics I have in mind, to see if there's some issues I missed in the basic setup.

For example, digivolution methods for the various character types. Right now, the idea is that each has varying difficulty in reaching the higher levels, but the difficult paths have more branches to allow for more versatility at each level to make up for raw power.

I still have the character sheet templates to do, so far I only have the one for spirit wielders.
@Rin
Either that, or with a spirit wielder, you can switch between both.

@Azure Bubbles
I will have some general restrictions on digimon picks due to the 'present day' digital world state/mechanics - For example, there is no reason yet for x-antibodies, and therefore the related digimon, to exist. However, within these, you can pick freely.

I will also accept completely custom digimon, tho those would be subject to deeper review before approval. Again, this game is experimental in nature, I kinda want you peeps to get creative.
@Luluna Hello there.

@King Cosmos
Entirely doable. The beauty of running this in an episodic format is that you can even pick whether you'd want your villain character to be recurring/overarching, or, should you want to experiment, you can just run an episode centered on your villain, and if it doesn't work for you, we kill the episode early and return to the main story.

@Byte
I imagine once we determine who wants to play what type of character, I will kick off some collaborative space (Discord if everyone is OK with it), and I will give time for players to work on their characters.

For the standard pairs, I think it could work if players posted a rough concept for their characters, and then we can see which ones would match and pair up, working on detailed character sheets afterwards. Of course, that would prevent noone from pairing up beforehand and just collaborating on their digidestined pair from the get go.

Overall, I am relatively confident this can work.

I have done similar pairings (dragon/rider) in 1x1s before, and it was some of the best games I was in. If anything, taking the concept to a macro scale is less risky, as here we have ways to get around a player dropping, whereas in 1x1, that's the end.

I have also done a RP in episode format with overarching story themes (think stargate, power rangers etc.), and it worked well for a game totally different from what the player group was used to as we could change direction easily if something wasn't working (site was focused on dragon related stories, and I ran a space opera survival game on there)

The key is to raise your voice early if you feel somethig is not going well, so I can work with you to fix the issue.

Digimon Experimental Roleplay

Current state of affairs

Most Digimon roleplays I have seen on the guild make you play both halves of the partnership: the Digidestined and their partner Digimon - the two characters whose interactions matter the most, and can be expected to interact the most. Personally, if I wanted to write both sides of my most important character pair myself, I'd be on a fanfiction site, not a roleplaying one.

Likewise, whenever I inquired about playing a Frontier-style character to be rid of that hassle, I received a no, with no additional explanation, even if the setting didn't seem unfit for such a concept.
The experiment

So instead, I want this game to be different. In this experiment, I want to give these character options:

  • One side of a classic partnership: The run-of-the-mill partnership is still the cornerstone of Digimon stories. However, in this game, one player will not be permitted to play both the Digidestined and the partner Digimon of a single pair. Instead, you will play only the human or Digimon part, and another player will play your partner, or vice versa. Before the game starts, players who wish to go this traditional route will be given time to hash out who partners with whom and their characters.
  • Spirit wielder: A Digidestined that uses the spirits of fallen Digimon to become one themselves. You can give this your own flavor - your spirit totems can be inanimate objects like in Season 4, they could be a voice in your character's head offering advice or vicious mockery, or your character could be a vessel through which the spirits temporarily return to life. The whole point of the experiment is to allow you more freedom.
  • Wild Digimon: The other side of the coin. These are the ordinary Digital World citizens, which in your hands may have an extraordinary destiny. These are your Leomons, your Whamons, or your Devimons! Whoever said you had to be the hero?

Yes, there is some potential for issues to come from this. Issues that exist even in a regular game, but may be aggravated in the classic pairing:

  • Inactivity: Life tends to get in the way of having fun, it's normal and it is to be expected. In this game, it has the potential of leaving your partner hanging. Therefore, there will be a relaxed, but enforced posting schedule, and you'd be required to report an absence beforehand, if you are able. If one partner goes AWOL, the story adapts: the Digimon can find a new partner, become wild, or fade away; the human can partner again, or take up Spirit Evolution.
  • Player conflicts: Don’t worry if you and your partner player don't click after a while. All of us should be entering with the experimental nature of this game in mind. Need to make a change? Make a story out of it! That’s Digimon's DNA. Struggles, disagreements, and mismatched personalities are fuel for growth.
  • Commitment uncertainty: The story will be in episodic format, so there will be times when new players can jump in, or for existing ones to swap characters and partners. So while I need at least some 'critical mass' to get this ball rolling, staying around as a reader before deciding whether to hop on the bandwagon should be an option.
  • And, I assume, quite a few things I didn't even think of: Just holler, and we'll figure it out.
Oh, right, the story!

Closing out

That's the sales pitch. Please let me know if you would be interested in this - whether now or some time down the line, what type of character you would be interested in playing (Digidestined pair half, spirit wielder, wild digimon, or something else you thought of) and feel free to ask any questions or suggest improvements. If this gathers enough attention, I'll open up a Discord for organizing things and post a full OOC to start this off.
