Physical Description: Slightly taller than average at 5’ 11” and a little on the heavy side due to filling out his frame with muscle since joining the PRT. His dark coloured hair is shaved close to his head, so that it doesn’t get caught in his helmet or mask, and his eyes are a bright blue. His civilian gear is usually casual, a t-shirt and jeans, as he doesn’t have a job or much of a social life outside of his hero work. His hero costume varies, as he is constantly rebuilding his equipment and has multiple load-outs for different situations, but he always wears armour that is matte black in colour and which tends to be blocky and angular in design. Its surface is smooth and lacking in detail or ornamentation, creating a fairly bland and boring style.
Personality: Brian’s personality can be mostly summed up using the word ‘weariness’. His life is currently defined by a cycle of building, losing and re-building projects using his Tinker powers; creating disposable, single use equipment to use in the field only to have to start from scratch after every engagement. He is not particularly attached to his work in neither the PRT nor his persona as a hero, treating it more like a job than anything else, and currently doesn’t have much of a vision for the future. There is a sense of going through the motions with most of the things that he does, with only the prospect of his future projects and plans giving him any kind of enjoyment, projects that he rarely gets to work on because of his obligations as ‘Pre-Fab’.

Power Perk(s): As a Tinker, Pre-Fab is able to build or alter existing devices well beyond usual restrictions of education, knowledge, resources, or physics. Most Tinkers have a specialty, his is the ability to create technology that can grow or build itself out of a compact form based on a pre-programmed blueprint; imagine a large turret growing from a small cube thrown on the ground, or armour that grows around its wearer at the press of a button.

His creations are not particularly special in terms of power or functionality, being similar to what any standard Tinker could create, but his edge comes from the fact that his builds are small-scale, light-weight and can be deployed at a moment’s notice.

Power Drawbacks: Most of the equipment he makes is single-use only. Once deployed they cannot be collapsed and re-used and instead must be disassembled using a device which emits a certain frequency that causes the builds to fall apart. The raw materials are them recovered and recycled into another build. Essentially, after every fight he must rebuild any item that was used, limiting the amount of time he gets to spend innovating or coming up with new ideas.

All of the items he builds are also made of a material which only he is able to produce or manufacture. Light-weight, easily compressible yet sturdy, the material he uses to produce his rapidly deployable technology is not easy to create, yet is used for everything he makes. Resources are a near constant issue for him, which is why it is important that he be able to collect the materials of any item he uses in a fight lest their loss set him back even more than normal.

History: The life of Brian Dawson was relatively mundane up until his early adulthood. Born and raised in Seattle he attended and studied computer science at a university in Boston before graduating. He decided to stay in the city and worked at a tech firm for a few years to build up some savings, before settling down in the city in order to create his own start-up business.

Though still young, he was confident in his ability to run and manage a business by himself and had faith in his ability to create and market software that he would be able to sell. He was so confident that he sunk all of his savings into the business and even took out several loans to fund his project. However it rapidly became apparent that he had bitten off more than he could chew and soon found himself running out of money and with an unfinished product that he couldn’t make any profit off of. His business, which had barely even begun, was starting to fall apart, but Brian was too stubborn to abandon the idea or file for bankruptcy and instead tried to push forward. He was confident in his ideas and his ability to pull through if he just had a little more time and resources.

Continuing wasn’t easy however, especially with a large loan hanging over his head and no way to pay it off, let alone acquire more money to finish his project. With no other options, he sought out and borrowed money from a less than scrupulous source in order to pay off his immediate debts and bills as well as enough funding to hopefully finish his work. And when that money ran out as well, he borrowed more. When that dried up as well, he borrowed even more from a different loan shark to cover for that debt as well.

Sooner rather than later, his borrowing caught up with him and he began to received notices from both the bank he had borrowed the initial amount from as well as the loan sharks he had borrowed from since then; some of the notices were a little more threatening than others. At this point he had managed to finish his software and had even managed to make some small sales, but all of his profits disappeared as soon as they were in his hand. Almost everything he made went towards keeping the debtors, bailiffs and thugs from his door, paying off loans with absurd amounts of interest that he still couldn’t manage to full stay ahead of.

Whenever it seemed like he was finally going to get a big break, a big client wanting to make a large purchase, someone expressing interest if buying the company from him and so on, it inevitably fell through at the last minute. Situations that looked like a way out of the hole he had dug for himself ended up costing him more money with no reward, only setting him back even further.

After a particularly bad few weeks, where it looked like everything was going to fall apart entirely despite struggling for so long, he triggered from the built up stress.

Brian briefly attempted to turn a profit from his new Tinkering abilities, selling items and gadgets made using his power, but the problems of Tinker upkeep rendering anything he made unusable after a while as well as the temporary nature of his creations made this difficult. The loan sharks he still owed money to managed to catch wind of what he was doing and discovered he was a Parahuman; in response they sought to exploit his power, making a new deal in which they would forget his debt and even pay off his other debts if he provided them with Tinker-made equipment until they considered his dues repaid. At this point in his life, Brian was willing to grab whatever rope was thrown to him and didn’t ask questions, even when it was obvious that what he was being asked to build could be used to hurt people.

Even this didn’t last for long however, as the sudden appearance of new Tinker weaponry was quickly noticed and traced back to its source with a couple of months. It wasn’t long at all before he found himself in PRT custody, being offered yet another deal in which he would be recruited to the Protectorate and relocated to another city in return for his crimes being forgiven and them paying off his remaining, legally obtained debt in the form of an advance on his salary.

This is where Brian, now going by the name Pre-Fab, finds himself now. He has been a member of the Manchester Protectorate team for a little over two years now and still finds himself getting used to thinks. He finds it stressful and unrewarding, but after everything he has been through and everything he has done, he doesn’t have a lot of options left.

Skills: Standard PRT combat training, crisis management and public relations.

Gear: As a Tinker, Pre-Fab carries more gear than the standard Cape. His equipment is his power, after all, and his ability to handle situations is dependent on what he has with him. Generally speaking, he has two different load-outs that he uses; one that he keeps on him at all times as a way to respond quickly to situations and another that he will use if given time to suit up.

- Quick-Response Armour: A pair of wrist bands, a pair of ankle bands, a circular device and a clear visor; when activated these will expand outwards into their pre-programmed shapes of gauntlets, greaves, a chest plate and a full-face mask. Offering light protection and anonymity while being discrete enough to wear under normal clothes or carry in a pocket.
- Heavy-Response Suit
o Underlay bodysuit – A full body suit worn underneath the rest of his armour. Contains artificial muscle fibres that work in tandem with the wearer to boost their strength by a small amount. Made in collaboration with another Tinker.
o Armour – Essentially a larger scale version of his Quick-Response armour which is thicker and heavier and provides more protection to the whole body. Includes a few hidden tricks.
o Helmet Visor – The most complex part of Pre-Fab’s armour is his helmet which, rather than just covering his face, protects his entire head. Like the full-face mask it is built around a visor; however this one incorporates technology in order to provide Pre-Fab with a HUD that provides communications and tactical data, as well as being linked to some of his gear.
- Shock Pistol – Carried as part of his quick-response gear. Very compact and light-weight. Fires an electric charge that can disable opponents.
- Restraint Rifle – A large rifle which Pre-Fab only uses when he has time to collect his gear. Fires seeds of his special material that can become restraints that grow around whatever it hits. Used to shackle opponents during a fight or to restrain them after the fight.
- Laser Rifle – A more offensive weapon compared to the restraint rifle, also too large to be carried normally. Contains a power source that allows for powerful and lethal beams of light to be fired.
- Deployable Turrets – Contains a power source, computer system and ammo, with the rest being made of his special material; these turrets are Pre-Fab’s main weapon against larger threats. They are linked to his visor and can track and fire on targets that he designates. Able to be loaded with different projectile types based on the threat, including non-lethal rubber bullets, gas rounds, live ammunition and the laser power source that his rifle uses, only larger.
- Deployable Drones – Contains a camera and power source. The drones send their camera feed directly to his visor and can be used to scout areas actively or can be set to alert him if they detect movements of signs of life. Come in flight and spider configurations or can also be configured to latch onto a surface as a spy camera instead of becoming a drone
- Deployable Cover – A solid wall of durable material, similar to his armour. Grows into a low, flat wall that can be used as cover or as a roadblock.
- Quick-change Weapon – The most experiment weapon in Pre-Fab’s arsenal. It is a melee weapon that can be disassembled without losing its cohesion or stored blueprints, as well as being able to hold multiple blueprints at once. Instead of locking into a configuration and having to be disassembled manually, it is able to disassemble itself automatically and gathers its pieces in a way that lets it be rebuilt again immediately, even in another form. The end result is a melee weapon that can change from sword, to axe to spear and back again. The goal is to use this approach for all of his builds moving forward.
- Disassembler – A small hand held device that resembles a Taser. It is used to disassemble the items that Pre-Fab deploys by sending a specific signal at very short rang that causes the material to deactivate.

The Shield spell, once in place, did not change colour or shape; though it was in contact with the stone and the faint mist of golden colours Earth Mana that came from it, it remained untainted and unchanged as he had hoped. This meant that it was possible to use a spell on an object that contained Mana without that spell being compromised, meaning it was possible to use a spell to buff or alter said object, like he was increasing the defence of the stone in his hand at the moment.

It made sense that it would work that way, of course, but he wanted to see it first hand before he went any further.

Now that he knew he could do that though, what could he do with it? The description of the rank I Shield spell said that it increased the natural defences of whatever it was cast on, while the higher levels seems to work more like barriers that surrounded the target and absorbed some of the damage for them until it broke. But did the Shield he had just applied actually make the stone harder, or was it just some nebulous ‘damage resistance’ effect that was applied to it?

The easiest option was just to put it to the test. Oberon flew over to the nearest tree, enhanced stone still in hand and raised it above his head before hitting the trunk of the tree as hard as he could. He repeated this two more times, waiting to see if the Shield had broken before striking again.

Was it simply a defensive buff, or could it be used to make a weapon more effective? Could he take a simple wooden stick and turn it into the equivalent of a quarterstaff or a steel pipe by magically increasing its hardness or durability? Could he maybe use the same principle to apply other effects to an object? It was in theory possible to cast a Shield spell using Fire aligned Mana to create a flaming weapon, but whether he could do so without burning the object or himself to a crisp was another thing. Or, if that didn’t work, what about Metal Mana? He knew it existed, though he had yet to use it himself. Could he create a Shield spell, or some equivalent, with a sharpened edge?

If he remembered correctly there was a dagger at the camp that had been taken from the Goblins earlier. If no one had claimed it then he could use it for some experiments, both to try and learn Metal Mana and also to try and use buff spells on a weapon that hopefully wouldn’t be rendered useless by them.

Speaking of the camp, he was now close enough to it that he could see and hear the others. Torrent was awake again, or at least he presumed it was Torrent, having finished her evolution and was now suggesting that they go hunting for food before dark. “Hunting sounds fine to me. Did we have a dagger around here somewhere? I want to try something.”

I'd be against moving the roleplay their entirely though. I know for a fact I can't keep up with the pace of a discord roleplay, especially when I have other big projects going on, and I'd prefer to do longer and more detailed posts for something like Worm even if I could.

@Eviledd1984 to add to the above, Endbringers are basically Godzilla but with more super powers; if one shows up in a city, that city probably won't be there for much longer. They actually aren't that big (mostly) but you'd know if they were around, as would every hero in North America. There's only three of them and they can appear pretty much anywhere in the world.

@LostButterfly92 casually linking a 1.66 million word story with an even longer sequel. I also recommend reading it, because it's great, but for the purposes of this roleplay it might be better just to use the wiki or search for terms you don't recognise.

He is someone who has been given a chance to improve his station and he is going to grab it with everything he has and not let go. Jason does not mix well with authority figures.

Power Perk(s): Onslaught’s power allows him to enter a Breaker state, a form with altered physical abilities that are on the surface rather mundane. He enters this state by selecting an organic being to become his ‘focus’, targeting them, and gaining slightly enhanced speed and strength but also becoming more susceptible to injury at the same time; a light tap will bruise more easily, a scratch becomes a cut, a fracture becomes a break and so on. Furthermore, while in this state each time he hits the subject of his ‘focus’ his Breaker state advances, increasing his speed and strength even further while also making him even easier to hurt or damage.

While in this state Onslaught takes on a shimmery appearance, an effect almost like a heat haze rising off of his body making it obvious when his power is active.

Although he becomes stronger and faster with every successful hit on his ‘focus’, he also becomes more fragile and easily hurt at the same rate.

That didn’t really change until his mom left. One day she was there and then the next she wasn’t; all of her clothes from the wardrobe her parents shared were gone, along with a suitcase. There was a note in the kitchen, stuck to the fridge door, saying that she couldn’t take things anymore and that she had gone to her sister’s place; they weren’t to contact her. The divorce papers arrived the following week by mail.

She didn’t leave anything for him.

His dad began to drink more after that. He would get angrier more often, yell more, throw things; sometimes hit him. The stack of bills got higher and the house got messier. Things didn’t seem so normal anymore, but there was nothing Jason could do, no one he could talk to about it and it wasn’t anything he couldn’t deal with. He kept quiet, hid his bruises, deflected whenever a teacher or a friend asked him about them; nobody asked too many questions. Nobody noticed.

Things deteriorated over time. Now his dad was drunk more often than he was sober, his angry moments were more intense and he was more likely to lash out at Jason than yell or throw anything. Jason wasn’t too happy with being treated like a punching bag, but by this point he was better at recognising the signs of an upcoming outburst and knew how to either avoid setting his dad off or knew to get out of the house for a while. He was adapting to things.

He was adapting and he was waiting. At 15 he knew it wouldn’t be long before he’d be able to fight back, wouldn’t be long before he wouldn’t have to let his dad knock him around anymore. A year or two and he’d be able to stand up for himself, he wouldn’t have to run anymore. Once he was 18 he’d be able to leave and never see his dad ever again.

The moment came when he was 17. His dad was in a particularly bad mood and Jason had slipped up, making too much noise as he was leaving or not leaving early enough. Since Jason had managed to avoid his last few outbursts his dad must have felt like he had to make up for something, because he was really laying into him this time. All Jason could do was stand there and take it, put his arms up to cover his head and take it and wait for it to be over; he could have curled up into a ball but he was too angry, he could have fought back but he was too scared. He was scared and he was angry, a weird mix of emotions; Jason hated this man more than anything, except maybe his mom, but the same man scared him more than anything else. The emotions were equally powerful, neither winning out other the other, so he was caught in the middle with no idea what to do.

In the end, anger won out. Jason grabbed something from nearby, he didn’t even know what it was just that it was close by and heavy, and swung it as hard as he could. His dad dropped like a sack of shit, bleeding from his scalp, and Jason dropped the heavy what-it-was to the floor. He felt elated, ecstatic, on top of the world to have finally fought back, done something. He felt terrified, a thick dollop of dread landing in his gut, because soon his dad would wake up and this time he might actually kill Jason. He wanted to cheer. He wanted to keep hitting the man on the floor. He wanted to run away and never look back. He felt like he was being pulled in every direction at once and he felt like his heart was about to explode in his chest and his brain burst from the pressure.

He triggered.

Jason ran away from home that night, grabbing as much money and stuff of value as he could before running out into the night before his dad could wake up. Assuming he would wake up. He ran all the way to the bus station and bought a ticket to the nearest city in cash, staying up all night and all morning as he waited for it to arrive and then drive all the way to his destination.

No ID, no job, no idea what to do. Jason found a motel that wouldn’t ask questions like who he was or what he was doing there and just sat in his room for a few days, burning through his stolen money as he waited for his dad to bust the door down or maybe for the police to show up and arrest him for murder. He really wasn’t convinced he didn’t kill his dad by accident. He ran out of money before anyone showed up to arrest him or kick his ass, making him think that maybe nobody was looking for him; nobody other than the motel manager asking for more money at least.

With no other options, Jason decided to use his new powers to rob a store for some quick cash, using the appearance of his Breaker state to intimidate the clerk and the enhanced speed to flee with the money. While not the most successful heist, merely using his power a little gave him a rush of elation and fear similar to what he felt when he was standing over his dad’s unconscious body; he was addicting. Even before the money he had stolen dried up he went out to commit another robbery, then another and another; it was reckless, but each time he used his power it was like feeding an addiction and it was best when he was doing something with some risk.

Eventually he ran afoul of the local Capes, a small-time independent hero staking out the area and arriving before Jason could grab the money and leave. He ran, using his enhanced speed to get away before the hero could do anything, though he later kicked himself for his cowardice; running, hiding, being scared of those bigger and stronger than him. He was supposed to be over that.

Jason had a run in without the same hero on another night, this time waiting around and taking his time getting the money and hoping the guy showed up. He stayed and fought rather than run this time, finding out more about his powers in the process but managing to beat the hero to a pump. He found the feeling exhilarating, standing over his beaten enemy again, but had to flee with he heard the sirens of approaching police cars.

The experience was enough to make him realise he wanted to do more than just commit petty theft in a small city. He wanted to fight, wanted to win and wanted to make people run from him for a change. He’d have to move to a bigger city, one with real Capes instead of the small-timers where he was; something like Boston or Brockton Bay would be nice, but Manchester was the closest and while it had a Cape presence it didn’t have as many big names yet. It would be a good place to make his debut.

He decided on a name, he spent some money putting together a proper, if cheap costume, and made his way to his new arena.

Situations that looked like a way out of the hole he had dug for himself ended up costing him more money with no reward, only setting him back even further.

After a particularly bad few weeks, where it looked like everything was going to fall apart entirely despite struggling for so long, he triggered from the built up stress.

Brian briefly attempted to turn a profit from his new Tinkering abilities, selling items and gadgets made using his power, but the problems of Tinker upkeep rendering anything he made unusable after a while as well as the temporary nature of his creations made this difficult. The loan sharks he still owed money to managed to catch wind of what he was doing and discovered he was a Parahuman; in response they sought to exploit his power, making a new deal in which they would forget his debt and even pay off his other debts if he provided them with Tinker-made equipment until they considered his dues repaid. At this point in his life, Brian was willing to grab whatever rope was thrown to him and didn’t ask questions, even when it was obvious that what he was being asked to build could be used to hurt people.

Even this didn’t last for long however, as the sudden appearance of new Tinker weaponry was quickly noticed and traced back to its source with a couple of months. It wasn’t long at all before he found himself in PRT custody, being offered yet another deal in which he would be recruited to the Protectorate and relocated to another city in return for his crimes being forgiven and them paying off his remaining, legally obtained debt in the form of an advance on his salary.

This is where Brian, now going by the name Pre-Fab, finds himself now. He has been a member of the Manchester Protectorate team for a little over two years now and still finds himself getting used to thinks. He finds it stressful and unrewarding, but after everything he has been through and everything he has done, he doesn’t have a lot of options left.

Gear: As a Tinker, Pre-Fab carries more gear than the standard Cape. His equipment is his power, after all, and his ability to handle situations is dependent on what he has with him. Generally speaking, he has two different load-outs that he uses; one that he keeps on him at all times as a way to respond quickly to situations and another that he will use if given time to suit up.

- Quick-Response Armour: A pair of wrist bands, a pair of ankle bands, a circular device and a clear visor; when activated these will expand outwards into their pre-programmed shapes of gauntlets, greaves, a chest plate and a full-face mask. Offering light protection and anonymity while being discrete enough to wear under normal clothes or carry in a pocket.
- Heavy-Response Suit
o Underlay bodysuit – A full body suit worn underneath the rest of his armour. Contains artificial muscle fibres that work in tandem with the wearer to boost their strength by a small amount. Made in collaboration with another Tinker.
o Armour – Essentially a larger scale version of his Quick-Response armour which is thicker and heavier and provides more protection to the whole body. Includes a few hidden tricks.
o Helmet Visor – The most complex part of Pre-Fab’s armour is his helmet which, rather than just covering his face, protects his entire head. Like the full-face mask it is built around a visor; however this one incorporates technology in order to provide Pre-Fab with a HUD that provides communications and tactical data, as well as being linked to some of his gear.
- Shock Pistol – Carried as part of his quick-response gear. Very compact and light-weight. Fires an electric charge that can disable opponents.
- Restraint Rifle – A large rifle which Pre-Fab only uses when he has time to collect his gear. Fires seeds of his special material that can become restraints that grow around whatever it hits. Used to shackle opponents during a fight or to restrain them after the fight.
- Laser Rifle – A more offensive weapon compared to the restraint rifle, also too large to be carried normally. Contains a power source that allows for powerful and lethal beams of light to be fired.
- Deployable Turrets – Contains a power source, computer system and ammo, with the rest being made of his special material; these turrets are Pre-Fab’s main weapon against larger threats. They are linked to his visor and can track and fire on targets that he designates. Able to be loaded with different projectile types based on the threat, including non-lethal rubber bullets, gas rounds, live ammunition and the laser power source that his rifle uses, only larger.
- Deployable Drones – Contains a camera and power source. The drones send their camera feed directly to his visor and can be used to scout areas actively or can be set to alert him if they detect movements of signs of life. Come in flight and spider configurations or can also be configured to latch onto a surface as a spy camera instead of becoming a drone
- Deployable Cover – A solid wall of durable material, similar to his armour. Grows into a low, flat wall that can be used as cover or as a roadblock.
- Quick-change Weapon – The most experiment weapon in Pre-Fab’s arsenal. It is a melee weapon that can be disassembled without losing its cohesion or stored blueprints, as well as being able to hold multiple blueprints at once. Instead of locking into a configuration and having to be disassembled manually, it is able to disassemble itself automatically and gathers its pieces in a way that lets it be rebuilt again immediately, even in another form. The end result is a melee weapon that can change from sword, to axe to spear and back again. The goal is to use this approach for all of his builds moving forward.
- Disassembler – A small hand held device that resembles a Taser. It is used to disassemble the items that Pre-Fab deploys by sending a specific signal at very short rang that causes the material to deactivate.

Gender Identity: Male
Age: 18
Physical Description: A little short for his age at 5’ 7” and a little on the underweight side. Jason has shaggy black hair and naturally blue eyes, but as part of his costume he wears red contacts to change them. The rest of his costume is simple and cheap, consisting of dark clothing, a black hoodie and a mask that conceals his lower face which has a skeleton, demonic design on it.
Personality: Jason has all of the confidence and arrogance of youth combined with the high of being enamoured by his new powers; he is cocky, aggressive and full of himself. At the same time he is a sullen individual, someone who has not had the best luck in life at this point and is filled with angry and bitter feelings. He is someone who has been given a chance to improve his station and he is going to grab it with everything he has and not let go. Jason does not mix well with authority figures.

Power Perk(s): Onslaught’s power allows him to enter a Breaker state, a form with altered physical abilities that are on the surface rather mundane. He enters this state by selecting an organic being to become his ‘focus’, targeting them, and gaining slightly enhanced speed and strength but also becoming more susceptible to injury at the same time; a light tap will bruise more easily, a scratch becomes a cut, a fracture becomes a break and so on. Furthermore, while in this state each time he hits the subject of his ‘focus’ his Breaker state advances, increasing his speed and strength even further while also making him even easier to hurt or damage.

While in this state Onslaught takes on a shimmery appearance, an effect almost like a heat haze rising off of his body making it obvious when his power is active.

Power Drawback(s): He cannot activate his power unless he has something to target and his ‘focus’ must be organic in nature, such as a person, animal or possible a Master or Tinker creation. He can be forcibly throw out of his Breaker state in two ways, either by hitting an organic being that is not his ‘focus’ or by failing to hit his ‘focus’ for an indeterminate amount of time. Although he becomes stronger and faster with every successful hit on his ‘focus’, he also becomes more fragile and easily hurt at the same rate.

History: Jason’s early life was nothing special. He considered himself a normal kid with normal problems and normal worries. His parents fought sometimes, but so did everyone else’s. His dad sometimes drank too much and yelled and them both, but that was the same in every family. There was a constant stack of unpaid bills and warnings on the kitchen counter, but whose didn’t? His life was normal.

That didn’t really change until his mom left. One day she was there and then the next she wasn’t; all of her clothes from the wardrobe her parents shared were gone, along with a suitcase. There was a note in the kitchen, stuck to the fridge door, saying that she couldn’t take things anymore and that she had gone to her sister’s place; they weren’t to contact her. The divorce papers arrived the following week by mail.

She didn’t leave anything for him.

His dad began to drink more after that. He would get angrier more often, yell more, throw things; sometimes hit him. The stack of bills got higher and the house got messier. Things didn’t seem so normal anymore, but there was nothing Jason could do, no one he could talk to about it and it wasn’t anything he couldn’t deal with. He kept quiet, hid his bruises, deflected whenever a teacher or a friend asked him about them; nobody asked too many questions. Nobody noticed.

Things deteriorated over time. Now his dad was drunk more often than he was sober, his angry moments were more intense and he was more likely to lash out at Jason than yell or throw anything. Jason wasn’t too happy with being treated like a punching bag, but by this point he was better at recognising the signs of an upcoming outburst and knew how to either avoid setting his dad off or knew to get out of the house for a while. He was adapting to things.

He was adapting and he was waiting. At 15 he knew it wouldn’t be long before he’d be able to fight back, wouldn’t be long before he wouldn’t have to let his dad knock him around anymore. A year or two and he’d be able to stand up for himself, he wouldn’t have to run anymore. Once he was 18 he’d be able to leave and never see his dad ever again.

The moment came when he was 17. His dad was in a particularly bad mood and Jason had slipped up, making too much noise as he was leaving or not leaving early enough. Since Jason had managed to avoid his last few outbursts his dad must have felt like he had to make up for something, because he was really laying into him this time. All Jason could do was stand there and take it, put his arms up to cover his head and take it and wait for it to be over; he could have curled up into a ball but he was too angry, he could have fought back but he was too scared. He was scared and he was angry, a weird mix of emotions; Jason hated this man more than anything, except maybe his mom, but the same man scared him more than anything else. The emotions were equally powerful, neither winning out other the other, so he was caught in the middle with no idea what to do.

In the end, anger won out. Jason grabbed something from nearby, he didn’t even know what it was just that it was close by and heavy, and swung it as hard as he could. His dad dropped like a sack of shit, bleeding from his scalp, and Jason dropped the heavy what-it-was to the floor. He felt elated, ecstatic, on top of the world to have finally fought back, done something. He felt terrified, a thick dollop of dread landing in his gut, because soon his dad would wake up and this time he might actually kill Jason. He wanted to cheer. He wanted to keep hitting the man on the floor. He wanted to run away and never look back. He felt like he was being pulled in every direction at once and he felt like his heart was about to explode in his chest and his brain burst from the pressure.

He triggered.

Jason ran away from home that night, grabbing as much money and stuff of value as he could before running out into the night before his dad could wake up. Assuming he would wake up. He ran all the way to the bus station and bought a ticket to the nearest city in cash, staying up all night and all morning as he waited for it to arrive and then drive all the way to his destination.

No ID, no job, no idea what to do. Jason found a motel that wouldn’t ask questions like who he was or what he was doing there and just sat in his room for a few days, burning through his stolen money as he waited for his dad to bust the door down or maybe for the police to show up and arrest him for murder. He really wasn’t convinced he didn’t kill his dad by accident. He ran out of money before anyone showed up to arrest him or kick his ass, making him think that maybe nobody was looking for him; nobody other than the motel manager asking for more money at least.

With no other options, Jason decided to use his new powers to rob a store for some quick cash, using the appearance of his Breaker state to intimidate the clerk and the enhanced speed to flee with the money. While not the most successful heist, merely using his power a little gave him a rush of elation and fear similar to what he felt when he was standing over his dad’s unconscious body; he was addicting. Even before the money he had stolen dried up he went out to commit another robbery, then another and another; it was reckless, but each time he used his power it was like feeding an addiction and it was best when he was doing something with some risk.

Eventually he ran afoul of the local Capes, a small-time independent hero staking out the area and arriving before Jason could grab the money and leave. He ran, using his enhanced speed to get away before the hero could do anything, though he later kicked himself for his cowardice; running, hiding, being scared of those bigger and stronger than him. He was supposed to be over that.

Jason had a run in without the same hero on another night, this time waiting around and taking his time getting the money and hoping the guy showed up. He stayed and fought rather than run this time, finding out more about his powers in the process but managing to beat the hero to a pump. He found the feeling exhilarating, standing over his beaten enemy again, but had to flee with he heard the sirens of approaching police cars.

The experience was enough to make him realise he wanted to do more than just commit petty theft in a small city. He wanted to fight, wanted to win and wanted to make people run from him for a change. He’d have to move to a bigger city, one with real Capes instead of the small-timers where he was; something like Boston or Brockton Bay would be nice, but Manchester was the closest and while it had a Cape presence it didn’t have as many big names yet. It would be a good place to make his debut.

He decided on a name, he spent some money putting together a proper, if cheap costume, and made his way to his new arena.
