Mary Winthrop

Location: Compartment 3
Magic:

Mary gave Georgina a sympathetic look. Seeing someone die must have been horrid. And her family friend had been cursed right in front of her. She was thankful that it hadn't been Callum that had been killed. Though, if he was a death eater - She cut the thought off. And drew her attention back to Apollo. Her best friend was suffering, and now Artie seemed messed up too. Apollo must have used his Legillimens and seen something awful and then Artie had tried to see what was wrong. She looked between the twins worried about both of them.

Mary reached over and grabbed the glass bottle. She wasn't certain if she could do this. She knew the theory. But that wasn't the same as having done it before. Her wand was already out, so she pressed it against Apollo's temple. There was something horrifying about the imagery of that and she hated it. A part of her thought of how in American movies they would put guns against enemies' temples to threaten them.

After a few deep breaths, she let her mind settle on only the thing she wanted to do. Then she reached and pulled the memory out of Apollo and into the glass bottle as he had requested. Her stomach was twisting and she felt like a headache was just at the edge. She hopped that concentrating on this wouldn't cause the shield out in the hall to fall. She had no idea if the fight was still going on or not.

Time: An hour after waking up
Location: Unknown

The walls were unresponsive to any cries any of the twelve made. It cared not for anything they said or did. Time passed, and when an hour had gone by since they had each woken a section of the wall, opposite the bathroom door, slid back into the wall and revealed a door just like the one for the bathroom. Opening the door would reveal the hallway. With the twelve identical doors, six on one side six on the other. A small silver plaque would bear the number of each person's room.

A soft, but robotic, feminine voice comes over the intercom "Please proceed to the Galley. It is mealtime." There are no apparent speakers. No further information is given.

Luke had yelled himself hoarse. He had kicked and punched walls. But they were hard and unyielding and he knew his flesh's limits in a way he couldn't explain. He also knew the price of breaking that flesh. Something small from punching a wall probably wouldn't cause him to bleed out, but he was in an unknown situation. He couldn't trust that if something did go wrong he would get the necessary care. So he sat against a wall staring at the ceiling out of his reach.

The ceiling had the only apparent exit. A vent. Covered by tight grating and heavily secured. It would take special tools to remove the grating. One of those tools being a ladder. The dresser apparently was also bolted to the wall.

He wondered if this was a punishment. He could not figure out what for. Luke had no memories. What kind of punishment would take away the memory of the crime? The concept of Hell was an idea that had arisen as well. That seemed to imply that he had some religious background, but it didn't seem rigorous because as he tried to examine his knowledge about religion he came up short. Unless sports were a religion. That information came to him easily. He could name teams for a dozen different types of sports and their rules. Interestingly when he tried to recall a player he couldn't find a face, but facts about them were like a Rolodex. All at his fingertips if he just knew where to look.

He heard a click and then the sound of metal moving. It wasn't grating, but he was quickly aware of it. Luke looked at the source and saw a section of the wall disappear into itself. Revealed behind it was a door. Exactly like the bathroom door. He jumped up and opened it.

He was not alone. For the first time since this began he saw other faces. Luke could have shouted for joy. Except he didn't recognize any of the faces either. He suspected they could have been any one of the names from his mental Rolodex of sports facts and he still wouldn't have known them.

"So any of you know what is going on? Or are you all just as clueless as I am?" An Asian looking guy standing outside room seven shrugged.

"Search me." He added. "Who are you?" That confirmed that Luke didn't know the guy at least. Or he had no memories either.

"Luke, and you?"

"Noah" Luke looked at the others emerging from their rooms. There looked to be about a dozen.

"The voice said we should go to the Galley. Anyone know where that is?" A black guy asked. He had a slight British accent, but that at least made Luke feel better about not calling him African-American. Luke tilted his head wondering how he knew that, and what other information would fill in blanks as he experienced.

"Pick a direction. There's only two." One of the girls said. She had violently pink hair, and started down the hall to her left.

Irritation and boredom led to Tessa exploring more thoroughly. She wanted to know what she had to work with. Which as she searched the room it became increasingly clear that was a fat lot of nothing. She was kneeling in front of the sink, looking under it. Surprised at how well stocked it was. How long was she going to be here? She wondered as she started to stand up something caught her eye. It was brown against brown, that's why she hadn't noticed it the first time. Tessa leaned in closer. It looked like a few droplets of blood, but she was no scientist. She couldn't be certain.

Tessa almost leaped for joy when the door appeared and opened. She ran for it and was the first one out. The hall for one terrifying moment was empty, but then other doors started opening. It seemed the group was mixed, half females, and half males. Tessa was thankful for other faces, but none of them clicked anything in her memory. It was still a giant void. A bit of conversation passed between them. Tessa's stomach grumbled and she wondered how long it had been since she had eaten. Putting in her two cents she turned to her left. There was a set of double doors in front of her.

She pulled the handle and found herself in what must be the Galley. There was a large table with twelve chairs at it. Goodie. They were in high school again with a class of twelve. Hanging from the ceiling just past the table was a four-sided touch screen. Tessa went to it first. The screen reacted to her presence and words appeared "Please select" with several images of basic breakfast type foods. She picked pancakes, with several toppings. There was a slight cathunk and a sliding door under the touch screen moved aside to reveal piping hot pancakes.

The screen now said "Please remove your selection". Tessa did so and turned around holding the plate. "All weirdness aside, that is cool" She took a seat at the table, nearest the machine. "So, do we need to do an ice breaker? Or is this going to be a silent meal?"

Gordon stepped up to the weird machine after the girl with pink hair. He agreed with her, they'd have to do a round of introductions. It was unclear how much they'd have to deal with each other, but considering the room they were in it was going to be just the twelve of them. He had no idea for how long.

He pressed a few buttons and discovered a screen on the machine that allowed him to give cooking instructions. He grinned and started typing quickly. Adding ingredients and instructions quickly and from memory he had no idea he had acquired. It took the machine a long time to get his request in, but that probably was because he had done a special order. After about five minutes the machine cathunked like it had for the girl and opened to reveal enough food for the group to split amongst themselves. Gordon seemed to have found the maximum limit of how much food the machine could process at once. There were dozens of different types of pastries piled on his tray including beignets and croissants. He had also figured out how to get jams and honey. There were lastly two large carafes, one of coffee and one of orange juice. With enough cups for everyone.

"That is a cool machine." He said echoing the pink-haired girl. "I do wish I could do the cooking myself. We shall see if what it has made is palatable." Gordon spoke with a slight French accent, marred only by his time traveling for his education. "My name is Gordon." He introduced himself while pulling apart a croissant.

So far he only knew Luke and Noah's names. None of the girls had offered their names, and the two black gentlemen hadn't even spoken yet. One of them looked like the military type, had that chip on his shoulder feel. He also wasn't going near the machine as if he expected it to bite him, or was waiting for those who were eating to keel over poisoned. Gordon had given that a thought, but he was too hungry, and if whoever had put him here had wanted to kill him they would have already.

"Yeah see you at the warehouse. I'm gonna just ditch school. I don't think I'll be going back ever again actually." A part of Colby was a little sad about that. The rest of him was fairly excited about it. He hated college. It wasn't helping him. He saw no point. So no reason to keep going. Especially now. He realized he didn't even know exactly what time it was.

"Thanks for the ride. And sorry Matthew is super weird." Colby said when Matthew got out of the car. He rolled his eyes and climbed out following after Matthew. Colby grabbed the leftover boxes. "All right, now where did we leave the car?" He looked around for his car.

Colby found it, he gave a satisfied grin. Happy that his car was still there. When he got to it though it looked like someone had tried to jimmy open the door. He noticed the scrapes on the driver's window door. He shook his head and muttered "Amateurs." Before unlocking the doors and climbing. When Matthew climbed in he handed him the leftovers.

Niah was glad she had found a route that took them as far away from Las Vegas as possible. Now Niah just had to hope that they would actually make it all the way to Fargo. It was step one. Though she doubted it would happen. Especially with Mads joking the way she was. At least it wasn't Nancy saying it. That felt like it could be even more dangerous. Sort of a 'Bard's tongue' curse. That was not something Nancy needed. Or any demi-god if Niah was honest with herself.

"I mean there is no way something won't happen. Thank you, for getting the tickets Mads. Was that all of our cash? Are we gonna starve now?" Niah asked half-joking. She was concerned they wouldn't have money for food, but if they could at least get to the Dakotas. From the Dakotas, they would need to figure where Mount Rushmore even was. A part of Niah hopped that it was in the Dakotas because she wondered if it was. She had thought it was on the East coast, but the Dakotas were in the middle of the country.

"This country is huge. How long is this train trip going to take?"

Niah shrugged about Eric. She wasn't surprised he had been a jerk to the pair of them. So far she hadn't seen him not be a jerk to anyone. "I don't know maybe they grabbed it cause they thought they could pawn it and make some money. They are always begging for money. Seriously, why can't we give them a job like pulling weeds or something?" Though her experience with Fauns had been that they were lazy so she didn't see if giving them job would even help.

"I've got $30." She winced. "Should have grabbed some cash. I guess we see how far this can get us. Maybe we can find a place to do an exchange." She had 20 Denarius coins. That could get them some American money, but would probably be an ordeal. Not that the whole quest wouldn't be an ordeal. They always were.

"We can see how far this takes us." She stepped over to a route map and started mentally plotting what sort of trip they had ahead of them. She couldn't remember exactly where they were headed. She didn't know US Geography all that well, but she knew it was one of the Dakotas. After following a couple possible routes with her finger she decided on one. "Okay if we go up through Portland and then over to, Fargo North Dakota I think that's as far as the train can take us. After that, we'll have to take busses. Maybe she could call her dad and ask for a wire of money. But that was dangerous since phone calls seemed to send out signals to monsters.

"Yeah, but that comes with the territory I think of being a kid of Mars. He wanted to know where I was." Niah shrugged. "I guess he wanted me around for something, but search me for what. And gods know he didn't think I'd be useful for anything." She sighed frustrated. "I think he is jealous that I got a quest. It is my first one anyway. And I think he's been on one. He seemed extra annoyed that I was the run in charge, but let's all be honest I'm going to rely heavily on you two."

"Oh gosh. I didn't even think about that possibility. I figured the Faun just stole it for the dragon. It is likely they stole it for another purpose and the dragon then stole it from them." Niah cursed slightly in Tagalog to herself. What was the purpose of the gem anyway? She knew it was used for some spells. "Do either of you know what the gem is used for? That might give us an idea of why the fauns might have wanted it. Could they even use it? Or did they just think it was a pretty shiny?"

Niah went first to get her sword back. The weight of it felt right on her back. She hated not having it. Niah had been trained too well to not have it. Then headed back to her barrack. Classic Romans. She thought as she entered and went to her bed. Niah was pulling stuff out of the trunk there when Eric Chandler came up to her.

"Bautista, where have you been?" He sounded aggressive, but that was basically his default state. He wasn't happy that she had been promoted to Centurion. The joke was on him, neither was she. Thank god she hadn't been forced onto the Senate. She'd go crazy.

"Dealing with the Senate. I've got a quest." He raised an eyebrow. "Prophecies you know how it is." She shrugged and shoved a shirt in her bag, as well as a handful of other helpful things. "Do we have an extra nectar?"

"Yeah, but do you need it?"

"Only if you want me to return from fighting a dragon." He sighed heavily and then pulled a small bottle out of storage. A single dose of 'save your ass'. "Thanks. I should go. Nancy and Madalyne are probably waiting for me already."

"You're questing with them?" She couldn't tell if he wanted to make fun of them, or her. Probably both. She didn't want to deal with that conversation.

"Yeah, I chose them." She said matter of factly.

"You're lead?" He scoffed.

"Yep. Bye." She slipped her backpack on. If he said goodbye it was muted by the door of the barracks door closing behind her. She sighed relieved. It wasn't anything against Eric necessarily. Okay, he was antagonistic and she didn't want to be around him. The stress of the day seemed to be getting to her. She wasn't usually this snappy.

"Sorry I got caught up talking with Chandler." Niah explained as she joined them. "I am ready to get the heck out of here. So San Francisco Amtrak station." She hoped that the cash the three of them had would be enough to get them across the country. If not... They'd figure it out. They were Demi-gods that's what they did.

Niah decided there really was an end to her patience. She was stressed while the Senate debated, and wanted to pace. That seemed like it would reflect badly on her so she sat as still as she could muster. Why was there even a debate? Alexandra had confirmed that it should be the three of them. It was supposed to be her according to Nancy, and Alexandra had confirmed that Nancy and Mads were with her. She was clenching her fists when they finally said that the three of them could go together. Also, why were there ten on the Senate? Shouldn't it be an odd number for breaking ties?

Niah took a deep breath and turned to Nancy and Madalyne. "Yeah, I need my sword. And an extra shirt would be nice. Meet at Deccumanian Gate?" Niah was already coming up with a few other things she wanted to grab. Some nector, maybe an extra imperial gold weapon, her sword was great, but like a boot, dagger would be nice. "And thank you for putting up with the red tape with me." She gave them a smile. They were good friends, even if they hadn't been close. Niah felt like being on a quest would either secure their friendship or they would not survive. Be that literally or figuratively as friends.

Leaving the Senate Niah turned back toward the barracks. It would be nice to get her sword back. And she could let the cohort know that'd she would be gone. It shouldn't take long. They would be gone by sunset.

Niah was frustrated with the lack of information. She hated it. They were getting to the point where Niah was about to snap when the runner came up with the letter for them. She was thankful for it. After several deep breaths, she went with the two of them to the Senate. She had been here often enough. Usually for her Oath Binding. This was more awkward though. She had never been here for the start of the quest.

"We have a prophecy about the missing gem. I'm supposed to go to Mount Rushmore, the gem is in the eye of George Washington." That was a sentence she had never expected to say. "I've chosen Nancy Parker and Madalyne Crane to go with me." She didn't know what all she was supposed to say, but that felt concise and to the point. Hopefully, it also sounded assertive. Her insides were twisting with fear and she could feel her hands were sweating. She wanted to wipe them on her pants.
