Runes act like the “battery” for the magic. They only start absorbing mana when they are painted with blood, death or sense nearby fear and all that good stuff. If you want the adverse side-effects to only apply to the usage of runes, then I would propose this concept:

Grave Sickness
Death can be a consuming force, even for the living. The frozen grasp, the maddening howls and the decaying rot do not merely destroy an opponent. They affect the user as well. Making them sickly. Early stages are marked by pale skin and haunted dreams. Later on the eyes recede into the skull. This is mostly when the detachment happens. Dread Knights all suffer from a level of disillusioning towards the world. Suddenly nothing in their lives matter. A great many wives have divorced their husbands due to this inability to care. But the sickness doesn’t stop there. Death Knights, those veterans that have been using the runes for many years, grow ever more distant from civilization. Priests of Death will rarely be seen within cities, often opting to sleep in graveyard crypts or near monuments. When not in combat, a great many Priests look sickly and weak (they are, physically not weaker than before. However, they are far more haunted by passed spirits and memories of corpses). Some lose all sense in their toes and/or fingers after a time of feeling bitter cold (even though they try to warm themselves before fires). They have little concern for the healthy living. If they care for someone, it is when they are dead. Or on its doorstep. In practice this would mean that a Priest would sit still while a village is being raided, uncaring for the many inhabitant. Only after the raid would he go around to mercifully kill those wounded that are too far gone. However, should a raider make the mistake of attacking the priest, the priest will assume the raider forfeits his life and will slay him in an instant. Those so far gone are often marked with sleek, black lines running over their body. While they are generally uncaring towards anything that lives, they do honor their oath to Alexander. Though only him.
@GreivousKhan My third and final faction. After this I'm starting my opening post.

Alexis Farreacher

Location: Exhaustion was a powerful force. One powerful enough to send Alexis into a deep, dreamless sleep. But it wasn’t as strong as fear. Fear that there was still something out there. Fear of sleeping in a stranger’s bed. And while the sleep was deep and dreamless, she had to wake up from it at some point. Which she did. Outside the very first rays of the sun already peered over the horizon. Filling her room with a golden light. She woke up face down into her pillow, realizing she was not in her own bed. Her entire body ached and felt soar. Like she ran a marathon yesterday.

With a deep sigh she turned around and threw her head back into to the pillow. Laying on her back on the bed was so much more comfortable. What did she get herself into? Literally twelve hours ago she was just a little witch in a big city. A girl that walked through streets, following an orb. Just a little before that she was a shade, ignored in the hallways of school. Now she discovered that she was a warlock, that she wasn’t alone and that there were other creatures of the night. Her dad told her once that life constantly changes. “You can’t know what happens tomorrow. Or the day after. Or next month. Or next year. The only way you could was by doing nothing.” It was part of an attempt to convince her to go with them to some party. It sucked. But the words stuck.

Sitting up, she pulled the Grimoire on the bed. As she opened it, the ink on the pages started to appear. Describing potions or spells. But when she took her pen and approached the paper, the ink vanished. The crown of the pen hit the book. An ink dot started to form. But what was she going to write? Help me?

Can you help me?

It was a stupid thing to write. How could the book help her? It was an inanimate object. Granted, it was enchanted but just how far did that go? Could it talk? Could it even understand what she wrote? Probably not. Even now the ink faded into the paper. Leaving it blank. Until the black ink started to form.

Ask and see

Rather surprised Alexis stared at the book. Could it work? Should it work? But she then realized she didn’t have time. It was Friday, a school day. Meaning she’d have to be in school in an hour. And before that, well, she figured Callie had made breakfast. That and she thought she still owned the witch an explanation for the book’s odd behavior. But in private. Callie she trusted. But not Leo and definitely not Magnus. With a comb, she went through her hair. Trying to tame it but it was a lost battle. So instead she put it in a pony-tail. After that, she grabbed her bag and slowly walked downstairs. Leo and Magnus were already awake. Magnus’ “morning” was proof of that.

“Morning.” She muttered from the stairs, locating the bacon. With bag and all she sat down on the other side of Leo and Magnus. Munching down the meat while making a failed attempt not to stare at the both of them. Did the day have to start awkward?

So, first of all: I present to you my diplomat! Cause there are already so many combat oriented heroes, exarchs and archons, I thought to freshen up things a bit. She's just a hero though. And then you have the Drakestone Sorcerers. Basically a group of drake riding mages that rain hell from above. Hope you like 'em! @GreivousKhan

Still here, might not be able to post as fast as I'd like sometimes though.
With all the military factions and conversations I decided to take a different approach. Tell me if you like it or not, @GreivousKhan. (also no worries, I got a Templar faction and a combat mage faction in a draft so Makau won't be entirely defenseless. On the subject of Makau, I'll make the holding as soon as my creativity allows it.)

Still here. Just waiting for the time skip.

Okay so my guy isn't yet pledged nor have I decided on a place for Makau and the surrounding lands of Makania. @Darkspleen or @Goldeagle1221 either of you want to take in my guy, his (soon to be made) hero, and the city of a hundred guilds?
@WrongEndoftheRainbow I hate to be the buzzkill here. I've quickly read through your sheet and it doesn't feel like an faction to me. All in all it feels mostly like you've described it all as a massive boon to the Empire. I mean, what are the Lambda's goals? In fact, what are they? An AI virus? I got way too many questions unanswered here.

It's still slyboy's decision whether or not to accept you. But I personally got way too many questions unanswered. I'd rather see it get fleshed out more. Try to step away from "this is all super advanced up for the grabs by humans" and move more towards making a faction that works with the humans. (doesn't mean humanity isn't studying your tech. Just make sure that you have your own people that end up using the tech).
