Amelia can be perceived as profoundly empathetic. It is to the point where it can overwhelm her at times, and she will shut down in order to recover. During these moments of rest, her impressions will be stale. Those who meet her for the first time will not notice these shifts. Instead, they could consider Amelia to be rather intrusive. She has no initial social filters when it comes to new acquaintances. Her demeanor is usually harmonious and sparing, as enduring such cascades of emotion from others on a daily basis leaves little to the imagination for herself. However, she frets not. In times of great duress, companions and strangers need compassion and sympathy.
As time passes, Amelia’s condition becomes ever so apparent. The shifts in her attunement to others may to people like her parents be as clear as gleaming day, but to most they are quite subtle. It can be things like use of different words, wearing sunglasses, napping, or sky gazing. These are indications of recovery from the emotional beings around her. However, those who dwell within her heart are exempt from these occurrences. Amelia will never disconnect from them, regardless of how spent she is. Her brother was one of these people. She never shut him out of her system. What he felt, she always felt as well even if he blames her for what happened.
Amelia will wear what is comfortable or suitable for a situation. Environment and time of the year usually also dictates what she wears. Whatever the occasion may be, Amelia is rather interested in clothing and style, but also wants to keep it original and outside of the Ledale fashion elite. However, if there ever was a ‘go-to’ set of clothes, she would never look away from a pair of jeans, some manner of sweater, and comfortable sneakers.

Amelia believes in nature. It is something about its cruelty and beauty that attracts her. All of its scents, sounds, and expressions speak to her in a way that calms her senses. Amelia rejects the modern world, one could say. Why should the weak survive? She often wonders. It is against the laws that created us. These personal beliefs are in direct opposition to her neurological condition. Nature has no empathy. Survival does not care about another being’s emotion. While some would consider such attunement to other’s feelings a blessing, it is more of a curse to Amelia for several reasons. She is highly conflicted in these matters. Amelia might think and believe X, but act and speak Y due to her own interference. It surely drives her mad at times. Foreigners and city dwellers have never been her cup of tea, but she could never turn her back on them if they were in duress. Amelia nearly hates herself for not being able to adopt nature’s cruelty in full. Her mind pulls one way, her heart another. Regardless of the flaws, Amelia thrives in the presence of forests, mountains, and oceans, as she grew up with such scenery.
Spirit worship has always been a part of her life. The family regularly visit shrines and offer gifts. There are two shrines in the Helston area where they live. One is near the town center and the other is on the outskirts. Due to many of the town’s inhabitants being miners, they revere spirits of the earth. The more they hold these spirits in high regards, the less accidents they see in the mines. Amelia never gave much thought to spirit worship. It was just something that they did, something she grew up with. It was not until she became a Guardian due to the great migration that she paid any close attention to spirits. She had never realized that the spirits were so individualistic, almost like beasts of nature. Once they began to communicate with her, Amelia became to revere them in a genuine fashion. Most of her spirits were based on electricity and lightning. She has always loved stormy weather and thunder. Maybe that was enough for the spirits to love her back.
Amelia did not care for politics until the war broke out. It was painfully obvious how different news networks and city-states spun their agenda around the conflict and underlying diplomatic problems. Or, at least that is how she perceived it. The school years in Helston was no different. The idea of ‘equality’ was always a big thing in various classes. There was the whole gender issue, unfair wage labor, and constant bashing of the ‘elite’ in city-states. Amelia could do nothing other than roll her eyes and sigh. She did get in trouble once and was sent home early with a warning. During a class on these issues, Amelia said that she would let her husband “spank her while she makes dinner”. The teacher, who was a middle-aged woman with dyed hair, boiled with rage and kicked Amelia out of the class. The ‘incident’ puts a smile on her face to this day. Nature does not care about ‘equality’. A lion will always eat the zebra and the wolf will always hunt the rabbit. That is just how it is for everyone, even human beings. Amelia simply cannot see it in any other way.

Amelia was born in Helston, Aeredia. It is a small town located at the base of the great mountains that span the eastern borders. Due to its proximity to the ridge, Helston has always been a place for miners. They dig metals out of the earth to sell for their own sake. Amelia was no different from Helston’s other inhabitants. Her father worked in the mines and her mother kept an animal shop at the market square. She sold all kinds of supplies for owners of dogs, cats, and everything betwixt. The shop was second nature to Amelia. The girl would help out whenever she could. During her years at Helston High, she even received modest pay whenever she kept the shop open by herself. Amelia has always been a friend of animals and nature.
Just like any other Aeredian, the ocean has always been an important part of Amelia’s life. The gulf south of Helston was a frequent destination during summer breaks and weekends. Her father had a small cabin by the shore, where they used to spend lazy days fishing and long nights stargazing. There was nothing strange about how Amelia was raised or her childhood years. Friends and acquaintances were plentiful, school saw little bullying of anyone due to Helston being quite isolated, and there was little crime to speak of. One could say that Amelia was a bit naïve when finally coming out of the town and braving the world.
When the Calamity hit, all they could do was to watch everything unfold on television. The war was so far away that they would not feel it in years, if ever. Most people of Helston just wanted to mind their own business and go about their daily lives. Some were eventually called to serve, but most kept their jobs for the sake of production for the war effort. However, Amelia’s brother was not content with staying in Helston. He was a few years older than her, and very passionate about things. He volunteered for the war. A clear reason for the departure was not given in words, but Amelia knew why. Four months after he left, the messages and calls back home stopped.
Amelia’s father was naturally worried for his son. A few weeks later, Amelia began to attract spirits. She kept it to herself for a time, but her father eventually found out. Her father was to wake her up one morning when all of Amelia’s spirits were visible outside of her body. It was not a big deal, but her father feared that the military would find out and come for her. It was illegal for Guardians to resist service in the war effort. However, life continued for a while without fuss. Amelia’s father grew ever more so worried about his son’s lack of communication, and the military could not give an explanation. It was a ‘confusing and chaotic war’ they said.
A few months down the line, the military finally came knocking on their door. It was quite a mystery as to how they had found out, but they knew about Amelia. They explained that she had no choice but to pack up and come along. However, the good news was that she would avoid regular service, and instead partake in a special unit consisting only of other Guardians. The news made her father a bit more calm. He asked his daughter to look for his son, if she ever got a chance to do so. Amelia promised that she would.

The only experience with violence that Amelia has is being severely battered by her brother. The incident happened shortly after he learned about another unfortunate event in their family, for which he held Amelia solely responsible. She spent three weeks in an Oakridge hospital. Everything was kept quiet within the family and no charges were pressed. Amelia’s brother moved out of the house in Helston during his sister’s time in the hospital. He lived in a shack just outside town until he took off to join the United Defense Force. Due to Amelia’s condition with her empathy, she never condemned him for his actions. They were partially justified, partially wrongful, but an outlet for him nonetheless.
There does not appear to be an evident connection between Amelia and her affinity for spirits of electricity and lightning. She has tried to make sense of it, but has since long given up. It is most likely just a coincidence that a large number of such spirits migrated to or through the Helston area at that time, but perhaps Amelia will discover some kind of deeper meaning one day—who knows. Besides that, Amelia has never fired guns or fought with weapons. Her father did teach her how to handle a pickaxe for mining and normal axes for chopping wood. If she ever had to make a choice in terms of combat weapons, it would probably be an axe of some kind.

Amelia received various medication during her time in the hospital after being abused by her brother. Among these was a benzodiazepine-like drug that also helped with other issues. Amelia has carried these drugs with her ever since as a means to suppress her empathy at command. However, she feels embarrassed about showing or taking them in public, and they do alter her way of being quite a bit, so she tries to be discreet. The drugs can also be found on the black market with the nickname ‘Diamond Dust’.
Amelia’s second name is Jasmine. Her parents are George Wayre and Olivia Wayre. Her brother is Adam Wayre. Her mother has two sisters in the world, and their parents are still alive. Her father has a sister and brother, but only their mother is still alive. Her mother’s maiden name is Chevalier, which is of Loseon descent. Amelia speaks fluent Lando in addition to her native language, Librian. Amelia is named after her great-grand mother of the Chevalier family. Amelia’s second name is of the same relative on her father’s side.
A great tragedy befell the Wayre family in the year leading up to Calamity. Everyone were deeply moved by it, but Adam appeared to be the most affected. He was also the only family member who openly held Amelia responsible for it. She had a feeling that other family members did as well, but they never expressed it. However, her father has always said that it was not her fault, that it was an accident. Adam did not feel this way at all and proceeded to physically abuse Amelia to the point of her being hospitalized. Amelia never admitted to blaming herself, but her increased use of prescription drugs could suggest otherwise.
Amelia is great with animals. She learned a thing or two from working in her mother’s shop. It was not only about food, but also basic grooming, nursing, and training.
