Overview

Location: The Caribbean
Time Frame: 1719
Rp Tags: Historical, Supernatural, Pirates, Character Driven, Adventure, Action, Slice-Of-Life, High Casual, Advanced, Large Group, Fantasy, Survival
Type Of RP: This RP follows pirates and their encounters with the supernatural. While it is not a mystery RP in itself, there will be twists and turns, clues and hints, and a complicated storyline driving us forward. Characters are not immortal--they can and will die.
Goal Of RP: Raid, pillage, plunder and otherwise pilfer your weasely black guts out. In other words, serve your own selfish interests. However, there is an end goal, of course -- to complete the job for Mr. Alucard and collect that cursed flask...And even more importantly, survive that task. Decide what to do with the flask.
Age Requirements: Minimal age for characters is 15; maximum age for characters is 42. Life expectancy for pirates and those in the Caribbean wasn't too great.

Premise

The Golden Age of Piracy, primarily dating from 1716-1726, was a lawless time. With 2400 active pirates sailing the seven seas, Europe was too busy fighting its own wars to do much to regulate the pirates. Spain was on the decline as a military power, France was attempting to expand its territory, and England was slowly rising as a new power. However, with the need to keep the colonies secure, in order to reap the benefits of imperialism, nations began to station more and more troops in the Caribbean, such as the British navy at Port Royal.

Traditional pirate haunts were beginning to vanish, with 124 Royal navy vessels stationed in the Caribbean. It had appeared that piracy would be extinguished, had it not been for the increase of the slave trade, and more warfare between European nations. The War of Spanish Succession allowed piracy to increase, and when that war ceased, the veteran sailors needed a source of income, and began to fly the Jolly Roger.

Yet this is where perhaps your history texts may fail you. Captain Avery Swale, a British naval officer gone rogue, accepted a job from an unknown man of fortune. Mr. Alucard is the only known alias of the man, but that matters not. What's more important is what Captain Swale was asked to do--he was to sail into strange tides, deep within the Devil's Triangle, and locate a cursed potion flask. The reward would be enough to make any man rich, if performed successfully.

Captain Swale, a pirate at heart, pocketed the flask. He was found dead, drowned on dry land, three weeks later. All suspected Mr. Alucard, but the flask remains missing. Mr. Alucard has given the job to another, certain that the flask had made its way home in one way or another. The job has been given to Harlianne James, Captain of the Bellona.

But others search for the flask as well. The English, although their soldiers will never admit to this, are seeking to use the flask as a weapon against the French, in order to gain control over the Caribbean waters. There are whispers that the flask's curse is essence of a pure power, one that boggles the mind and the senses. Many have attempted since to take the flask--and all have ended dead.

The sea is calling, lads. It's time to hoist the colors and set sail into these strange new waters...

Active:

  • Harlianne James

Deceased:

  • Captain Avery Swale - ???

Known NPCs:
  • Mr. Alucard

The Caribbean

  • Tortuga: This island was a haven for pirates and considered one of the most dangerous places in the Caribbean.
  • Havanna: Called the capital of the New World, trade with countries other than Spain was prohibited here. All shipping had to be done with Spanish ships. Before returning to Europe, most ships would arrive at Havanna for food and water, and then head northward via the Gulf Stream. It was a strategic location, naval base, and center of communication, subjecting it to frequent attack by European sea powers.
  • The Devil's Triangle: Also called the Bermuda Triangle, it is a mystical and deadly location in the Atlantic Ocean. Its waters are rumored to be the only depths that even Davy Jones would be too afraid to sail across.
  • Port Royal: A prosperous town, it is a safe port for pirates to dock at, despite Jamaica outlawing piracy in 1687. This is largely due to corrupt customs officials, who allow pirates to dock in exchange for a share of the cargo.
  • Naussau: Formerly a safe port for pirates, Naussau had its pirates hunted down and expelled in 1718 by Woodes Rogers. Rogers then called for the arrest of Calico Jack, Anne Bonney, and Mary Reade--some of the most well known pirates in the Caribbean.

Social Class

All nations have varying systems of social class. Outlined here are the basics for the main three nations -- England, France, and Spain. If you wish to portray a character of a different nationality, you will need to do a bit of research into the social class system there. Additionally, not all nations were seafaring, and some nations will have prejudices against others. You have been warned.

Members of the military have not been included in this system, since the military is unique. Officers will be assumed to be on the level of peers, while common sailors and soldiers will be on the level of the upper-middle class.

Remember, not all occupations have been listed. If you are uncertain as to where an occupation fits in with the social class scheme, just ask!

  • The Royal Family
  • Peers
  • Gentry

    • Baronet/Baroness (English only): Consider this as a pseudo-peerage. While it comes with a title and has to be granted by the Royal Family, that is about all. They are looked down upon by the rest of the peers, hence their placement here.
    • Knight: This title is granted due to service to the crown. It can be passed down through the male line, only in service to the crown is sworn by the next in line. Females cannot hold such a title, unfortunately, for at least another century.
    • Gentleman: These are those of 'new money.' They own property, such as lands or ships, and have become so wealthy as to be considered no longer a part of the middle class. Most of the children of gentlemen marry the poorer peers, in order to gain a title and gain a seat in the House of Lords.
  • Upper Middle Class

    • Clergy
    • Physicians
    • Lawyers
    • Educators
    • Merchants
    • Manufacturers
    • Shop Keepers
  • Lower Middle Class

    • Inn Keepers
    • Artists
    • Craftsman
    • Laborers
    • House Staff
  • Lower Class

    • Paupers
    • Gypsies
    • Thieves
    • Prostitutes
    • Pirates

Piracy

The life of a pirate is more complex than simply plundering and pillaging everything in sight. In history and in fictional portrayals, pirates operated by a code (although some regarded it as more akin to guidelines). There were systems in place to allow ships to function, as well as common superstitions and traditions. Included below are some of the basics. Any questions, just ask.

The Pirate's Code

  • Befriend others wisely.
  • A captured pirate cannot be harmed if they request to a crew member of the other ship to be taken to meet with said ship's captain.
  • Any man who falls behind is left behind.
  • Any person who refuses to serve aboard a pirate's ship shall vacate that ship instantly; that is to say, they shall die.
  • Each crew member has an equal say.
“Every man shall have an equal vote in affairs of moment. He shall have an equal title to the fresh provisions or strong liquors at any time seized, and shall use them at pleasure unless a scarcity makes it necessary for the common good that a retrenchment may be voted.”
  • No member of the crew shall rob another member.
“Every man shall be called fairly in turn by the list on board of prizes, because over and above their proper share, they are allowed a shift of clothes. But if they defraud the company to the value of even one dollar in plate, jewels, or money, they shall be marooned. If any man rob another, he shall have his nose and ears slit, and be put ashore where he shall be sure to encounter hardships.”
  • Always be ready for combat.
“Each man shall keep his piece, cutlass and pistols, at all times clean and ready for action.”
  • Do not bring those who give you pleasure aboard.
“No boy or woman shall be allowed amongst them. If any man shall be found seducing one of the latter sex and carrying her to sea in disguise, he shall suffer death.”
  • Do not desert.
“He that shall desert the ship or his quarters in the time of battle shall be punished by death or marooning.”
  • Shares of the treasure are not equal and are distributed according to rank.
“The Captain and the Quartermaster shall each receive two shares of a prize, the Master Gunner and Boatswain, one and one half shares, all other officers one and one quarter, and private gentlemen of fortune one share each.”
  • Those who are lose limbs shall be appropriately compensated.
"Thus they order for the loss of a right arm six hundred pieces of eight; for the loss of a left arm five hundred pieces of eight; for a right leg five hundred pieces of eight; for the left leg four hundred pieces of eight; for an eye one hundred pieces of eight; for a finger of the hand the same reward as for the eye."
  • Mum's the word.
"That no man shall open, or declare to any person or persons, who they are, or what designs they are upon; and any persons so offending shall be punished with immediate death."

Crew Positions

  • Captain - an elected position. needs to be daring and decisive, as well as inspiring. in chase or battle the captain's powers are absolute, can discipline anyone who disobeys. Life and death power over prisoners. Generally skilled in navigation and seamanship.
  • Quartermaster - next in line in authority after the captain. makes decisions and has authority over routine, day-to-day matters. elected by the crew and supposed to represent their interests, compensated with extra share of treasure. jobs are to maintain order, settle fights, and distribute food. keeps account books for the ship. can punish the crew for disobedience. usually leads boarding actions, decides the plunder to take. becomes captain of any captured ship.
  • Sailing Master - in charge of piloting, navigation, and actual sailing. sometimes has been forced into piracy. determines the course, looks after navigation instruments.
  • Boatswain - supervise maintenance of ship and naval provisions. Inspects the ship, sail and rigging each day, reports on conditions. In charge of all deck activities, such as weighing/dropping anchor, handling of sails.
  • Carpenter - maintenance and repair of the wooden hull, masts and yards. Checks the hull regularly. Reports to the boatswain. Has no authority, but usually receives slightly larger portion of the share.
  • Master Gunner - accountable for the ship's guns and ammunition. includes sifting the gunpowder, keeping it dry and prevent it from separating. ensuring cannons are free of rust. General good condition of all weapons.
  • Mate - apprentice to sailing master, boatswain, carpenter and gunner. Jack of all trades type.
  • Surgeon - responsible for the fitness of the crew. Often pressed into service. Sometimes prohibited from leaving the vessel until the crew has disbanded.
  • Sailor - knows the rigging and the sails. understands how to maneuver the ship and sail under different conditions. discern weather patterns, read stars, anticipate desires of the commanders.

Miscellaneous

  • East India Trading Company: A semi-military organization with the goal of monopolizing trade in the Caribbean and East Indies.
  • "Pirate" Accent Generators - Here and here. These are good for helping with a more generic accent gained from years at sea. Basic.

The Lore

This list will be updated as information is revealed. Much of the information below is told by word of mouth, believed only by those who have sailed the seas for years and years. There is still more yet to be discovered...

  • Davy Jones - the condemned captain of the Flying Dutchman, legend has it that this man rules the Seven Seas. There are stories of men who strike bargains with him, yet none appear to be credible. Still, there are those who believe.
  • The Kraken - a legendary sea monster that preys upon ships. Many blame the kraken as the source of the deaths caused in the Devil's Triangle and some will even attempt to sell you the tooth of a kraken...Whether they are to be believed, of course, is up for debate.
  • Witchcraft - those who practice magic are said to have made pacts with the devil. They are vulnerable to iron, but possess elongated lifespans. Most of them use long and complicated rituals to use their magic.

  • Special - To New Comers To The Guild - Pm The Gm for a tid bit to add under extras instead

Character Sheet

Below is the character sheet required for the RP. Those of you from Abandoned Hope will notice that I've been generous when it comes to the amount of skills you can have. Please do not take advantage of this, and keep things realistic. The increased number of skills is designed to accommodate for knowledge sets required to survive in the Carribean.

Relation Sheet

You will record your thoughts and opinions on other characters. To start the RP, you are required to have one relation to start with. If you're having trouble coming up with one, let me know and I can sort it out for you. There'll be periodic moments throughout the RP where I ask that you update these.

There is also a space included for your observations. Clues and points of interest can be placed there, in order to help you follow the story as it progresses. This is for your own benefit, as while this is not a mystery RP, things will build on each other.

Sound Track

  • Hoist the Colors by Hans Zimmer - Strange New Waters Theme
  • Save My Soul by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy - Harlianne's Theme

Quick Note

Please do remember that there are some historical prejudices. Women may have had more opportunities as pirates, for example, but life still wasn't perfect for them. Sexism, classism, and racism were all active and dominant forces. People were (and still are today) prejudiced over a large amount of things. Think about nationality, sexuality, self expression, religion...That will all come up in this RP. Hell, slavery was legal back in 1719. And while we will stay accurate to the times, I really want to drive this point across:

There is a difference between writing a character who has prejudices and writing a scene prejudicially. The use of racial slurs will NOT be tolerated and will mean an automatic removal from the RP. (Seriously, don't even try me >.>).

Additionally, please do note that there will be some factual errors with this RP when it comes to history. The class system depicted above is a good example, as it has been modified slightly in order to work for our purposes better. Either things will be simplified for comprehension or they will be altered to better fit the storyline. I will try my best to keep this historically accurate, but any arguments about the historical accuracy of the RP will not be tolerated. This is a world I've helped to create for you--it won't be perfect. It is the way it is.

Starkette

Location: Xavier's Institute - Outskirts of New York
{"We live as though the world were as it should be."}

Starkette sighed slightly, trying to pick at the skin around her fingernails, only to be stopped by colorful bandages she had applied earlier. It was a habit she was attempting to break and she had about as much success with it as Loki did during the Battle of New York. But that wasn't the most difficult challenge she faced. Sitting in the room set aside at the institute for the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, Starkette had her phone propped up in front of her, earbuds in her ears.

"No, no, no, Dad...You really don't have to do that," Starkette said, tugging at the bandage on her right hand.

A moment later, she shook her head. "Of course I'm not picking at my fingers! I'm not a kid anymore. I can adult and all sorts of crap!" Starkette insisted, though she was looking off camera at that point. It was a clear lie and she knew that her father knew, but it was a lie she had to tell. It was practically obligatory at this point.

"Fucking hell, fine," Starkette said, rolling her eyes a bit. "If it means that much to you, I'll be there. Just no cameras, got it? I hate all the press at these things."

Another minute passed and Starkette forced a smile, waving at the screen. It was an uncomfortable experience for her still, each time Charles decided to communicate with everyone mentally, but she was back on the clock. She didn't have much more time to argue with her dad as to whether or not he'd be allowed to throw her a huge birthday party in a few weeks. "Love you too, Dad," Starkette finished, before hanging up the call.

Shoving her phone away and pulling out her earbuds, she rolled her head a bit, in order to loosen her neck up. It was almost like going into battle, having a conversation with her father over the phone. She really ought to stretch before them, she figured, with the way she felt tired and cramped by the time they ended. She could only consider herself fortunate that her college classes wouldn't resume for another week or so, meaning that her only duties were for S.H.I.E.L.D., and not anything else.

It wasn't too long before she had made her way to the professor, seeing Marygold there. She was tempted to ask for a twenty-sider to roll, in order to determine if Marygold and herself would get into an argument today. But at the same time, she figured her gamer humor would be lost on most of those present. She rocked back and forth on her heels slightly, admittedly dying to learn the details of the mission.

It was then that Starkette realized she had accidentally forgotten to report to her supervising officer first, before heading onto the meeting with Charles.

Oops.

Jack Hudson

Location: Building F (The Newnans' House)

Sleeping with Tatiana in his arms always did wonder for Jack's mood. With her there and his eyes closed, the universe never felt more beautiful. All of the horrors of the world would vanish from his mind, with his thoughts entirely consumed by her. It had been a miracle when he ran into her in Georgia. And as his eyes fluttered open that morning, noticing that Tatiana had already left the bed, his thoughts flickered back towards her news from the night before.

"Bazhooli Newnan..." Jack whispered to himself, before shaking his head. "James Newnan...Uh...Davina Newnan...Sally Newnan..." He tilted his head slightly and nodded a bit, still impressed and stunned by the news. And perhaps, if he was honest, a little terrified by it.

Did Newnan even have parenting classes? He didn't know the slightest thing about infant care. He'd need to make a list of questions and take them to either Sally or Froggy, or maybe to be extra prepared, both of them. Would they need to get a birth certificate issued? He shook his head slightly, only to throw himself off of the bed and onto the ground as he heard the gunshot.

"God damnit," Jack swore. It was their honeymoon and the wedding had gone so well. Maybe it was the universe trying to get them back to reality and away from cloud nine, but his blood ran cold as he heard Tatiana scream his name. He didn't even bother getting changed, dressed in just a t-shirt and boxers, as he dashed in a crouch towards the sound of Tatiana's voice.

"Tati?!" Jack called out, as he skidded into the living room, having heard Tatiana's voice come from the living room-kitchen area. His heart sped up as he spotted the trail of blood she had left, instantly assuming the worst--that his wife had been shot while he was asleep.

"Come here, you're bleedin'," Jack beckoned, grabbing a pillow from the couch, prepared to prop his wife up, get pressure on the wound, and then run like all get out for Froggy. And take care of whoever hurt his wife. It hadn't occurred to him that Tatiana's injury could have been just an accident. He kept an eye towards the kitchen, ready to jump up and punch whatever son of a bitch, if any, emerged.

Beatrice Decker

Location: Franklin Addition Building C3 (Beatrice's Apartment)

Beatrice had been in the process of getting dressed, pulling on her gloves, as she jumped slightly, startled by the sound of gunfire. Shots coming from the wall itself were fairly common and growing up, she hadn't been a stranger to shootings. Bullets had been normal then as well. She frowned, trying to determine where the noise had originated from. She couldn't be certain, but it didn't sound like it came from the wall.

She glanced around the room for a moment, mulling over what to do. If there was an issue, security would handle it. But Beatrice wasn't the most trusting individual. The day she had arrived to Newnan, there had been a mess, a mess that she figured must have gotten the attention of every walker in the state. She couldn't help but hope that today wouldn't turn out to be a similar mess.

She smirked slightly to herself. It was still a better day, in her book, than the one before. No romance in the air, no weddings about to happen, and no forced social interactions. Finally making up her mind, she crouched on the floor of her room, watching the door from her vantage point. If the shot had indeed come from within the walls, she didn't intend on being a casualty in the next round of fire.

Chloe Ridgeway

Location: Building B (Rejects House)

For the only female resident in the Rejects R' Us House, sleep had not been easy to achieve last night. Her sleep itself was restless, as she tossed and turned, her mind plagued with dreams and nightmares nonstop. In short, her rest was anything but restful. Before the sun had risen, her sleep cycle had calmed down slightly, but she found herself in the throws of a reoccurring nightmare.

In the dream, the shade provided by buildings spared her from the merciless heat of the sun. She felt her phone buzz in her pocket, and somehow, she knew it was from one of her old classmates in Grimm contacting her. And while she tried to reach for the phone, she instead found herself thrown to the ground, hitting the pavement hard. She skinned her shoulder in the process, but she didn't feel the pain.

The sound of tires screeching came next, as Chloe looked up into the face of an addict, a skinny blonde who had knocked her down. While she recognized him, she couldn't recall who he was. "Who are you?" she tried to ask, but her lips wouldn't move. The sound of the tires ceased for a moment, followed with a blossoming bullet hole in the drug addict's head. Chloe couldn't scream and couldn't move, as she heard the sound of continued gunfire, somehow knowing that this bullet wouldn't miss her.

But as she heard the shot in reality, Chloe jolted awake, her hand instinctively reaching for something to defend herself with. It took her a moment to process Ryan kneeling in her bedroom. With the fear on his face and having been awoken by a gunshot, Chloe hesitated for a moment, before confirming to herself that was, indeed, fine.

"I'm fine, I'm fine," Chloe reassured him as she moved from the bed to the floor. "What the fuck is going on out there? Are we under attack?" She bit her lip slightly, her eyes widening slightly. It was emotional and irrational, but for a moment, she couldn't help but fear that Riley was out there. She had to mentally reassure herself that Riley wasn't even on duty yet, and that if all went well with Amelia last night, her sister would be getting some much needed sleep at the moment.

"Fucking hate Tuesdays..."

Ravi Chakrabarti

Location: Building 3D (Gavi's General Housing)

While Ravi did quite enjoy sleeping in, he couldn't help but feel dismayed as he opened his eyes to find that his best mate, Gavin, had left already. Rubbing his eyes with his hands, he cursed under his breath. He had hoped that Gavin would change his mind and stick around Newnan, but the man thought with his heart, not with his head. As far as Ravi knew, he was already halfway to Peachtree City by now--or at least, halfway in a direction towards what he hoped was Peachtree City.

When Ravi heard the shot go off, he rubbed his eyes and sighed, figuring that Gavin had been the one responsible for the shot, one way or another. "Bloody hell," Ravi muttered, forcing himself to crawl out from underneath the sheets and start to move about. The best case scenario, he figured, was that Gavin had challenged someone to a duel. It seemed like something Americans would do.

The worst case scenario, of course, was also that Gavin had challenged someone to a duel and had his request accepted.

The Englishman hurried to get himself dressed as best as he could, doing a bit of a hop-dance as he changed into his pants. He nearly stumbled in the process but managed to get dressed, grooming his beard quickly with his hands, in order to look presentable. Letting out a sigh, Ravi just hoped that Gavin hadn't gotten himself into too much trouble just yet.

He didn't really fancy the idea of having to stitch his friend up this early in the morning.
Finished reading. 'Twas an awesome update! ^_^
Ouch. Spoilers much? :P *dashes off to read*

Cecily & Iris

Location: Justice Asylum For The Criminally Insane: the Ludwig Building

Iris' search in Cynthia's room appeared to amount to rather little. And by rather little, it would be more correct to state nothing at all. Sighing, the young doctor sat down on the bed and put her face in her hands, feeling powerless and useless once more. She could not leave the room without ignoring the agent's instructions. She had alerted the asylum to the hostage situation, yet as far as she could tell, it hadn't helped matters at all.

All Iris did know was that an orderly was dead and her patient had a good chance of being next. She knew rather little about hostage situations herself, but a gut feeling told her this wouldn't end well. Huffing a bit, she mumbled under her breath, "J'ai l'utilité d'un chou." She only rose her head slowly as she heard the sound of the sirens approaching, hoping that it wasn't too late for Cynthia.

Cecily, meanwhile, didn't know Keystone enough just yet to tell if he was being serious. From the way Proserpine spoke about Tutwiler, it didn't sound like an alcoholic beverage to her. His jolly tone, combined with his huge stature, only further confused the young coroner. And of course, it wasn't like Cecily had an extensive knowledge of alcohol to begin with. As far as she knew, Tutwiler could have actually been an alcoholic drink.

But reconsidering it, Cecily instead came to the conclusion that Keystone was perhaps trying to aggravate Proserpine. It certainly was the more logical idea, at any rate...though, she wasn't too sure what irritating the woman would accomplish. Her thoughts were dismissed quickly, however, as she jumped a bit, seeing Caesar appear behind Proserpine. She felt like she had blinked and in that moment, the heavily scarred Mexican had appeared, gun in hand.

And while Cecily was quite certain that Caesar even glaring at her would be enough to get her to sign over pretty much everything she owned, Caesar's threats appeared to do nothing to Proserpine. Hell, the woman laughed, as if she was Harley Quinn or the Joker. The news that Proserpine claimed to not have killed Alicia was troubling, at the very least...Though Cecily wasn't certain if she could take Proserpine's word at face value. She didn't see the logic in trusting someone's word when it came to murder and destruction--science would always have the answers, after all.

"Damnit," Cecily cursed under her breath, seeing Proserpine escape with her daughter. She yelped instinctively as glass scattered everywhere down the hallway, ducking slightly with her head down, almost resembling a turtle hiding in its shell.

Location: Teriny Inn

Maeve covered her mouth with her hand, but it didn't stop the laughter from spilling out as she saw Calum, ensnared by his own coat. He seemed to be getting more and more clumsy by the moment, as if with each moment, he regressed in his motor skills just a tad bit more. And while Nigel helped the man to his feet and didn't laugh, Maeve couldn't quite help herself. Any bit of self control she had been attempting to practice, at least when it came to Calum and his fuddling, had vanished.

As Calum made his way to the office, nearly knocking over tables as he went, Maeve couldn't help but wonder if the inn would still be standing come morning. The odds seemed to be increasingly against it. And if she didn't have a cover of some decency to maintain, she perhaps would have struck a bet with Nigel. She did enjoy gambling, after all.

"A gran' idea indeed," Maeve replied, as Nigel explained the removal of the candles. She turned her head towards the sound of Calum's latest crash and became more convinced by her earlier theory that the man was slowly losing all of his fine motor skills. When Nigel bade her goodnight, she thanked him once more for the instructions, though she doubted that she would need much during the night.

Recalling the instructions from earlier, Maeve grabbed her belongings and made her way up the stairs to the room that Nigel's wife had prepared for her. A lullaby drifted in and out of her mind, and had she not been carrying her possessions, she would have translated the words with her hands out of a force of habit. Roisin never could hear her sing, yet Maeve still sang to her child, just in a different way than other mothers would. Her heart ached slightly, wishing that her child could be closer, wanting to know every little detail about her little rose's day.

Her main consolation was that a warm bath had been promised to her before she turned in that evening.

Aloise took the keys from Emmie and put them in her jacket pocket for safe keeping. She was fortunate that the camo jacket had so many pockets, allowing her to keep important possessions on her at all times--things like holy water and her lore journal. She then took the wallet from Emmie as well, putting it in a pocket with the keys.

She hesitated slightly before responding to Emmie. It was four in the afternoon, and in a few hours, the police were due to conduct door to door searches. Hanson and Keenan, the former a fugitive and the latter an agent for a corrupt organization, had gone in pursuit of Sera's killer. Liam, to the best of her knowledge, was trapped inside a wardrobe, along with Eudora. Andromeda was upstairs, investigating that wardrobe, and here was Emmie, having just lost someone close to her, asking what was next.

"We're going to figure out what's going on in this town," Aloise said finally. "It's all connected, somehow...And our best bet of finding out how is probably in...is upstairs." She caught herself just in time. Looking through Sera's notes would have been a good idea, had she not just been killed in front of Emmie. Aloise wasn't sure if Emmie could handle looking through Sera's things just yet.

"We can start by looking into the wardrobe with Andromeda."

As Eudora flips through the pages of the book, she finds that it is largely a detailed family tree. Little symbols next to names take the reader to further pages in the book, filled with stories about the individuals. At the very bottom of the tree, Eudora reads the names Boris Valeska and Fiodora Valeska, with a neat line connecting them together to show marriage, and another line showing their child, Folly Valeska. Interestingly, underneath Boris' name is another, written in a messy script and crossed out. At first glance, it looks like the author simply misspelled Boris' name the first time and had to rewrite it, crossing out the mistake. Under closer inspection, however, Eudora will be able to make out the name Jack Fairfax underneath Boris'.

"Miss, I have been utterly fascinated and enchanted by this portal of sorts," Fairfax began, putting his goggles on his eyes. "I am a man of science. It is both my duty and my pleasure to join you." He smiles kindly at her. "And I served in the Great War, miss. I'm no stranger to combat." Nodding at Eudora, he then followed after her into the wardrobe, for them to turn up this time in.....

December 28th, 1929 - Coventry Horrors, the Attic

...the very place Eudora first found herself when she jumped through the wardrobe, the location where she had met Fairfax and lost Liam in the first place. There seemed to be little logic as to where one would appear, beyond the time changing with each trip through the wardrobe. To Eudora, a witch, she will notice that the magic of the wardrobe has increased exponentially. Something happened to increase its power, and even Fairfax, a man of science, was aware of the oddities.

"John!"

Before the man has much of a chance to regain his footing, he found himself dragged by the ear away from the wardrobe, with Folly looking at him, entirely frustrated. Her garb has changed from what it was before, as she wears a simple purple dress for the 1920's. It doesn't give her much of a figure, the flapper dress, but she manages to pull it together regardless. Her hair has been tucked behind her ear.

"Amiyra!" Fairfax called out happily, clapping his hands together.

"What the hell were you thinking?" Folly asked, frowning deeply at the man. "You could've been killed!"

"But I wasn't," Fairfax countered. "I was perfectly safe with Miss Eudora."

December 28th, 2016 - Cirque Anomaly, the Grounds

Strong may have been a bit daft and naive as strongmen went, but he wasn't entirely stupid. He knew when he was being made fun of and ignored, and while some may think he could tolerate that behavior from Lilith, it cut deep. "Yeah, best be ready for call," Strong grunted before excusing himself, and walking off in the direction of his tent. He looked almost menacing from behind, mostly due to his muscles.

True to Thalia's words, of course, the performance call time was in about an hour. Off at the main tent, the fires had been put out, and groups of performers were working quickly to disguise Boris' handiwork, or at least, make it appear to have been intentional. The show must always go on, of course. Thalia will need to find Boris at some point that evening, as she works as his assistant. Lilith has more freedom to decide as to what to do--and to seek out any assistance with her act that evening, if needed.

December 28th, 2016 - the Police Station

"Nothing? That's a pity," the nerd sighed, clasping his hands behind his back. He walked over towards where Liam had stood, grabbing the stapler that he had used in an attempt to free the hooded figure. The hooded figure raised her head ever so slightly, her face still shrouded in darkness, as the man threw the stapler at her. It was much like a child throwing a peanut at an animal in the zoo, all in an attempt to make it do something.

"You...won't..." the hooded figure spat, her breath sounding shaky and painful. The nerd tilted his head slightly, watching as the figure's back arched and the loudest scream yet tore itself from her lungs. A purple light engulfed the room, blinding everyone as the nerd shut his eyes, turning away. By the time the light faded, the cloak was crumpled on the ground in a heap. The wall she had been chained to had a gigantic hole blown through it, allowing a glimpse of the fallen bodies of police officers behind it.

It would then become clear where they were. They were in the records room of the Coventry Police Station. If Liam craned his neck, no officers would appear to be conscious to him that he could see. He couldn't make out, however, whether they were merely knocked out--or perhaps even more troubling, dead.

"Prayers won't help you, Prophet," the man replied with a bit of a sigh, as if disappointed once more in him. "The fabric of reality was already torn...And with the kumakatok dead, that hole is only going to widen." He chuckled slightly, looking like he was congratulating himself. "After all, there has always been three of them--and now, there isn't."

The man then shook his head and walked through the hole blown in the wall, eventually vanishing from Liam's line of sight.
@Lady Amalthea Question: When I post for Maeve this round, should I post something for Virginia as well, or may I wait to post for Virginia until the next update?

Dorothy Pender

Location: the Captain's Office

Dorothy entered the room after Anisa explained that they needed to talk. Her mind was on high alert and her body still felt a bit nauseous as she nodded and took a seat. She didn't know quite what to expect, with Anisa's usual method of discipline being immediate and public, such as what had happened with Genevieve a few days prior. And while the Captain was her best friend, Dorothy didn't expect any special treatment from her. Her days in the military had taught her that when dealing with superiors.

It was then that it dawned on her that she, hypocritically, had given special treatment to her sister. As Anisa finished her pacing and turned around to face her, Dorothy did not make any attempt to avoid eye contact. She listened to her friend, her captain, and felt her stomach churn once more. The more Anisa spoke, the more deeply ashamed Dorothy felt. Dorothy nodded as Anisa spoke, understanding and internalizing her words. If she had not been brave, she perhaps would have crumbled in front of her captain and shed remorseful tears.

Dorothy's heart bled for her friend as Anisa said Jackson's name. She knew that it was hard and difficult on the Captain, to lose someone so close. Dorothy didn't know what she would do if either Daphne or Anisa had been in Jackson's place. She nodded once more as Anisa said that the ship and the crew had to trump personal ties. It had been foolish of her to shrink away from reprimanding her sister.

And while Dorothy didn't know if she could discipline as well as Jackson could, she realized then that she would have to try. She had spent almost her entire life coddling Daphne, doing her very best to protect her. But letting her little sister act like a child wouldn't help Daphne in the long run. It would only set Daphne up for failure, it would put her sister's life in danger.

"I'm sorry, Captain," Dorothy said as she was dismissed, and she rose from her seat. "I'll reprimand her to the best of my abilities, ma'am." She paused for a moment, and then left the Captain's Office, trying to remember every punishment technique she had ever seen Jackson use.
