Well, his companions were certainly having some... interesting training experiences. He wanted to say that he was surprised by Anise's antics though he really wasn't. He was more surprised she didn't try jumping the Sawsbuck herself. What was more curious was whatever the deal with Earl and his Cubone and Marowak was. It was obvious what the problem was though he was surprised that Earl hadn't acknowledged it or figured it into the equation.

"Sounds like you just need to get more gym badges." He shrugged. It sounded simple enough. Get more badges and his Pokemon were more likely to respect his ability to train them, which means they would get stronger. Then again, he seemed more interested in potions rather than actually becoming the strongest.

And then Anise returned so they were ready to enter the Frozen Cave and it was, in a word, cold. Cold and strange. Wait that was two words though he hardly could have been called wrong when there was a giant Wailmer encased in ice. How in the world it got there was anyone's guess though Wailmer were certainly not any ancient species so it raised even more questions. And then a Delibird gave him a berry along with the rest of his friends.

"Oh, um, thanks." Basil added it to his massive collection of berries.

He looked at the people mining away at the walls of ice and suddenly an idea struck him. "How about we do some mining ourselves?"

If she knew exactly the kind of face she was making would she realize that she was blushing like him?

Magnus had felt his cheeks gently glowed red in response to the heat that boomed in her own cheeks. It was a far more intense reaction than he had anticipated, far more honest than what he would have come to expect from these courts. Then again, perhaps he should have expected it from a woman that so clearly wore her heart on her sleeve.

For just that moment, he silently stared at her back unsure how to proceed as this was not what he had planned at all. It was supposed to be as simple as checking on her and reassuring her that she had not made a fool of herself, not become bewitched by her.

And yet when he heard a voice from behind he silently cursed it only to see that the voice belonged to the man that had spoken to his sister earlier. However, he hid his annoyance with a charming smile. At the very least he now had a name to the face. Well, veiled face.

Magnus cleared his throat. "I merely followed after her due to concern. However, it turns out her company is pleasant to keep." His blue eyes stole a glance from her with just the briefest smile before turning his sights back to the man. "Magnus Pawonska. I believe you've recently become acquainted with my sister, Nora Pawonska. The woman in the red dress." It was a simple acknowledgement followed by a smile just as simple.

He cared little for the man's reputation as a rake nor would he forcibly insert himself between Munir and Nora if anything were to become of their meeting. She deserved to have her fun and if it grew into something more then great. If he should break her heart though then he would find something else would be broken too. Such thoughts though were not appropriate for tonight.

"Have you come to cool your head as well or was concern your main motivation?" He asked with a raised brow.

Her sincerity hit him like a sack of bricks. He did not know if he was worthy of such an assessment, but there was a part of him that desperately wanted to. Just how was he supposed to answer her? Tell her that she was wrong? Did he not just say that he was not going to argue with her on matters of taste? The only response he had for her was the bright red color that tinged his cheeks and the nervous gaze of someone with a question burning inside of their warring heart.

If I shine like stars then what does that make you?

Those words stayed stuck in his throat though the question persisted in his heart and that's where it would stay, for now. Instead, he gave her a half-cocked smile. "I won't say no to food." His gaze looked down at their entwined hands. She hadn't let go yet and for some reason, he struggled with the notion of letting go.

Nolan followed her with his fingers still laced with hers to one of the tables lined with a veritable feast of excess. For him this had become something of his new normal though he knew that the young boy that had lived off of stale bread stolen from another vagrant would have looked up on this with equal parts joy and disgust. Now it just left him disgusted.

Still, he hid it with a cheeky smirk at the princess. "Your eyes look wider than your stomach. Try not to overfill your plate."

His fingers unlaced hers almost unwillingly and grabbed her a plate. Over her shoulder though he saw them, Lottie and the mysterious man that looked like the spitting image of Damien Calbert sitting at a table directly across from him. Lottie looked furious, or something a bit more complicated than furious and if he were to wager a guess it would involve the reason why Lorenzo tried to strike King Edin.

Concern visibly painted his features followed by a pang of guilt. "I believe I have been a very poor friend to my nearest and dearest tonight," admitted the young noble. His gaze fell back up on his friend before he looked at Marnie. "Forgive me, I will only be just a moment or two." He bowed his head politely before he parted with the princess.

Nolan made his way over to his friend with calm steps that failed to ease his worry. There was never a moment where he did not worry about her and this year had done nothing, but exacerbated them. However, when he finally stood in front of her and her new... whatever they were, a part of him could not but to feel the simple delight of seeing his friend again.

From being he laid a gentle hand on her shoulder. "Looks like the night sky is missing a star." Nolan gave her a fond smile that was reserved for only a handful of people. "Lottie, it's been too long."

It took every fiber of his being not to rip his hands away from her. For just a brief moment, he felt like control had been wrestled away from him and it made his stomach lurch with an anxiety that disgusted him. She wasn't the monster that his nervous system screamed she was. She wasn't this cruel or selfish woman that wanted to hurt him. She was kind, sentimental, outrageous, and just as awkward as him and, yet for that moment he could only feel a fear that sickened him.

"Why would you say that?"

He opened his mouth to respond to her though words failed him. What was he supposed to say? Bear every dark secret that scarred his back? Tell her who he really was? What he was and the consequences that marred his life?

Gods, he hated how he looked at her. She made him feel like he was actually a person and that frightened him. His gaze dropped to her hands clutching tightly to his own.

Because if you knew would you look at me the same?

And then just a word, a simple "No" brought his attention back to her with raised brows as she stomped closer to him. The word hit him like a club over the back of the head and she certainly looked angry enough to actually hit someone with one. Her words were anything, but violent. He almost had to laugh—it was the kind of response that he would come to expect from her and yet she somehow surprised him.

Almost. The implication that he was too her taste had done very little to tame the heat in his cheeks.

"Who am I to question the taste of a princess of Varian?" He chuckled sheepishly, his green eyes averting hers nervously. Nolan looked down back at her hands that held his so softly."So when you look at me, what do you see?" He murmured. "Do I shine for you?"

His eyes widened when he realized what he had just asked. "No, um, forget I said anything!"

Well, there was a smile at least. It was small and it was meek, but it was a smile nonetheless.

Magnus stood there underneath the stars with her though he was more fixated on her than the twinkling skies above. She was hardly subtle with inching her way closer to him though he made no effort to move away from her. It would have been plainly insulting if he did, at least that's what his excuse was.

His brows though lifted from his head. How could she not have known? There was being sheltered and then there was being separated from reality. Of course, he knew that the Alidasht delegation had only just arrived not that long ago, but surely someone would have told her. Hell, they didn't even need to tell her directly; she could have heard it from someone passing by.

Hesitantly, Magnus nodded and then said, "Yes, it's true. She admitted to being a witch and... Well, you know the rest." His brows knitted together. He had just pushed that thought way in the back of his mind. "I implore you not to think hard about it. It'll only leave a pit in your stomach like the rest of us." His piercing blue eyes looked over the view they had of Soralia. The lights almost seemed like the very stars in the sky.

He let the silence hang in the air for only a moment.

He turned to face her again with a very earnest expression. "I truly do wish to apologize to you, Shehzadi Amira. I did not mean to embarrass you the way that I did, but I had to make myself abundantly clear that it wasn't me who sent those flowers. It would've been cruel to lead you on when I've only learned of your existence tonight."

She was beautiful, beautiful enough to make any man's heart race. That was an indisputable fact though there was something else to her. There was something, for lack of a better word, pure about her. Not pure as in someone inexperienced with the world, but pure in the fact that she hardly seemed to have a malicious bone in her body and saw the good in everyone and everything. Maybe to her own detriment. She should have been more wary of him, of any man for that matter instead of inching closer to him... And yet he made no attempt to move away.

Magnus plucked a yellow marigold from one of the pots that decorated the balcony and gingerly tucked it behind her ear. "It may not be a bouquet, but maybe this will suffice." It stood out from the blues and golds that covered her though he could not deny that it looked pleasing on her. He smiled at his handiwork and said, "Yellow definitely suits you."

Nolan had heard not a single word that she said. He couldn't hear her over how loud his heart was pounding. All he could think about was how her waist fit in between his arms and how she felt in his hands as he gripped her though he could not ignore how slender her fingers were, how soft the curls of her auburn hair were, or she pressed against him. He wondered if she could feel his heartbeat and prayed to whichever god that would listen to him that she wouldn't.

Maybe she already was aware. He had never seen anyone blush as furiously as her before and that in turn made his face blush with the same vibrancy of her. She was completely still in his arms as if reality would simply ignore them if they just did not move a muscle. Maybe if he didn't move either then maybe the world could stand still if for only a moment?

Gods above, maybe he was greedy.

Slowly, Nolan helped Marnie back on her feet and removed his hands from her though his body betrayed him for they lingered longer than they meant to. He could still feel her warmth pressed against him still. "I, uh, um..." Nolan stammered out as he tried to get the words to leave his mouth. "I'm sorry. We were falling and I just grabbed...whatever to keep you up." His hands gestured towards her.

This was an absolute mess. It was just supposed to be a dance, not a fucking circus. Why did things just never go to plan?

"Maybe it really is better if I just stay on the sidelines," said the noble with a dry laugh.

With a look of genuine curiosity, his eyes followed hers until they landed on the very man that Lottie was smitten with though his eyes widened in shock. Why in the fuck did that man look like a carbon copy of Count Damien? When in the world did that man have a son? Why did he have a son? Did he perform mitosis and that's why the looked so similar to the man?

"It certainly isn't..." Nolan began with a healthy amount of hesitancy. "But I hope that isn't all that he can offer." It would be wonderful if Lottie found someone so loyal, but she also needed stability. She needed someone that could be a solid foundation, someone that could weather the storm with her through thick and thin. Now he did not know the man so he could not make that judgement yet. Gods above he wanted to trust Lottie's judgement. His heart could not take the idea of her being hurt again.

And that hurt lingered. A sad smile crawled along his lips when Marina mentioned the Countess, Lottie's mother. "Ah, yes. I was there for the funeral. It's... Well, I try not to think about it."

Countess Emina had always been so protective and kind to him when Duchess Victoria, his adoptive mother, had not spared him anything of the sort. The times when he spent with the Vikena family on their estate in Verimont were so impossibly precious to him, words failed to describe it. To him though he never admitted it out loud, she was very much like a mother to him. Now he wished he could have gone back in time and told his younger self to not care about appearances and tell her that. Maybe she knew it, but he would never get the chance to express the sentiment to her.

Marina's touch was a soothing balm for the turmoil that raged in his heart. She didn't take his worries away, but it was... better. Still, he could not shake whatever was bothering him.

"Well... it looks like-" Nolan cut himself short. Was that Lorenzo Vikena, Duke of Vermillion, and step-father of his best friend throwing an uppercut straight towards the king?

“OH, MY GODS!”

Marina's gasp and the sudden spectacular impact of her brought him back to reality. Now, she was not a particularly heavy person, but the problem was that her god damn leg was locked in with his. He could feel himself begin to topple with her off to the side as he desperately tried to hold onto her and maintain his balance.

Fuck, fuck, fuck!

Through no small act of willpower, he swung his leg over as they began to dip and braced itself against the floor.

"Got you, I've got you..." He breathed out with relief.

It was then that clarity of where he was touching her crashed into him next. One arm wrapped around her with a hand clutched tightly at her side, almost at her hip and the other on her supporting her upper back. In his haste, he just grabbed onto whatever part of her to protect her from the fall though he failed to at the same to recognize how much of a compromising position this would appear to an outside observer.

Nolan stammered out, "I, uh, are you o-okay?"

It had not escaped Magnus' notice that Nora took on a much more curt tone like she did whenever she was upset with him. He maintained his pleasant smile; he had nothing to hide after all until it cracked. He was just about to respond to his sister when the commotion broke out by the throne between a noble and the King of Caesonia who in turn responded in kind. It was nothing short of a mess, an embarrassment for King Edin and all parties involved though it had nothing to do with him.

His gaze returned to Amira and... Why were there tears in her eyes? She looked like a small, fragile thing that tremored as if she were exposed to the cold for the first time.

It would have been cruel to string the young woman along by claiming he was the one to have sent her the bouquet when he had no feelings for her or even knew her name. The truth would have revealed itself eventually and it would have caused her greater hurt and embarrassment and cost him his reputation. It was the responsible thing. It was the right thing. So why, even when he was in the right did she look at him as if he just shattered her dreams?

His attention was pulled away by a man that matched him physique and size. No, he was just slightly bigger than him. It was not everyday he could find someone that looked like they could match him in raw strength. And his sister knew of him? And judging by his reaction he knew of Magnus and knew of the girl who held that bouquet. Amira was it? It should not have been a surprise that she was a Shehzadi though he had not expected it. Then again, this night was not going exactly as he expected it to either.

Magnus nodded politely in response to the lord. "As do you Lord Ravenwood. It appears that my sister had made more acquaintances than I-" He stopped himself. Amira had sprinted off with no word of warning towards a balcony.

He could have ignored her. Why should he get bent out of shape? She was just some random girl whose name had been unknown to him until Lord Ravenwood. She was the one who made the assumption. He didn't do anything wrong.

Gods dammit.

Magnus slightly bowed from the hip towards Lord Ravenwood and his sister. Gods know that Nora was going to let him have it later regardless if he was the one who sent those blasted flowers or not. "Forgive me, but it appears that I have some matters to attend to. Sister, Lord Ravenwood."

He made his way through the crowd at a casual pace. If he had chased after her like some panicked lover it would have only hurt her reputation and his. Oh and the rumors! No, he just needed to play this calmly.

He stepped onto the balcony and stopped to stare at her from behind. Under the light of the moon she was beautiful. No, that wasn't true. She was beautiful in any context. Even he was caught off guard with the way her dark hair caught the moon's silver slivers of light beneath the veil and how her dress shimmered like starlight. It defied logic and explanation of how no other man, woman, or otherwise had been taken by her beauty.

Get a grip.

After a moment he called out from behind, "It's a lot in there, isn't it?" Magnus slowly approached the railing of the balcony just a few feet from her. His large form leaned forward more than normally so they could be as close to eye level as possible. There was no point in asking if she was okay; he had no intention of drawing attention to her feeling of embarrassment.

"I don't think most balls are supposed to be this... heated, for lack of a better word." He chuckled though it really did sound like things were hectic in there. "I do believe I would be remiss though if I fail to comment how lovely you look tonight, Shehzadi Amira."

Well, it was a bit disappointing, but at least some of his team were able to get stronger though some of them fair better than others. Basil used one of his Super Potions on Titus to keep him going and gave the fish a gentle pat on its flopping head. "You'll get there buddy."

What he saw though surprised him; there was a brief flash of white emanating from Crocus' bulb, but it just faded away. His Pokedex buzzed at his side and when he pulled it out he saw that Crocus could evolve... But he wasn't? "What's going on bud?" Basil knelt down and gave the little Bulbasaur some head scratches.

"Bulba..." Crocus hung his head down in shame. He felt like he was disappointing his trainer for not evolving though a part of it just wasn't ready. It was a lot to change one's very shape, their being, who they were.

Basil gave him a gentle smile. "It's fine, you can evolve whenever you feel ready. There's no rush." He returned Crocus to his ball and turned his attention to his companions. "Well, this place wasn't ideal for training. We'll just have to move forward until we do. So, time to go to the Frozen Cave."

Why couldn't he just keep his mouth shut?

He wasn't blind; he could see that indignation roaring in her eyes and anger painting her cheeks and it made his chest ache. He wanted to tell her that he was fine, he did not need her to defend him or to show that she cared and give him false hope. Just let him bury that persisting spark as deep as he could in the confines of his heart until it smoldered into ash just like everything else. It would be better for everyone. Anything would have been better than for her to see what laid beneath the surface and find a shambling mess of scars that whispered his every insecurity.

Who could ever want something as broken as him?

“She saved my life this week.”

That alone was able to bring him out of whatever pit he was spiraling into. At first there was a look of concern for her safety that then his brow furrowed tightly in restrained rage. If Stratya didn't kill whoever dared to raise a hand towards Marina then he certainly fucking would with his bare hands.

Marina paused. “Well, my breakfast. But my breakfast might as well be my life before noon.”

Nolan blinked a few moments and then breathed out a heavy sigh. "Gods above Marnie, lead with that." Still, he could only laugh. It sounded like the pitter patter of rain against a window pane.

She pulled him out of it with a silly sentence. Well, not entirely. She wasn't a magician that could cure every ailment that plagued his heart with a charming laugh and a bright smile. In fact, she was both the source of that warmth in his chest and the insecurity that had been gnawing at him since he laid eyes on her tonight, but her grip on him grounded him. It almost felt unfair that he was probably the only one feeling this way though he could push that aside.

It wouldn't be the last time.

"Believe me, I am well aware of her greatness." Nolan followed her line of sight as they turned to the very captain they were just talking about and her knight that had followed her like a shadow. Her admiration towards the knight-captain was plain as day though he had to question if that was all there to it? Well, it's not like he could blame her; her knight and Stratya made for a handsome pair.

And then she remembered that she had a partner that she was dancing with.

The way she spoke so fondly of Lottie did his heart some good. Heavens above did Lottie need more companions! Maybe she had found some more too while he was away during this first half of the Courting Season. His thoughts, however, returned to Marnie when she said something very curious. Who did Lottie remind her of that made her seem so much smaller, her gaze so distant just like when he placed the bracelet on her.

Nolan, hesitantly, returned the gesture back to her in hopes that it would bring her some sort of comfort. His attention though was brought to the verbal displeasure of King Edin and the group before him. They were a bit too far to make out what was happening, but even he could make out Lottie in that dress that typically would have been far too daring for her tastes. It left him feeling oddly tense.

Why do I feel so uneasy?

"I will need to catch up with her. I've been away on work related matters so I have not been privy to the latest happenings of this Courting Season." Nolan stated as they took another turn. "I only hope that she's met someone nice." He remarked with a tinge of worry for his dear friend.
