Personal biography, as detailed by the candidate for use in Jedi archives. Acquired shortly after last achievement of note.
A descendant of the legendary Jedi Knights Revan and Bastila Shan who had played pivotal roles in the Jedi Civil War several centuries earlier, Shan was born on the planet Brentaal IV in the year 3,699 BBY. Inheriting her family's strength in the Force, Satele's earliest memories are of the Jedi Order, and her mother. Jedi Knight Tasiele Shan was just as known for her skills as she was as a Jedi who believed attachment could be a source of strength, not a sure path to danger and the Dark Side. Satele's earliest years include a lot of time with her mother, more than a little unusual for Jedi.
During Satele's time as a youngling this gave her an extra spotlight, a spotlight already present from whispered names
Revan and
Bastila. A proud member of Thranta Clan during her Initiate days, a Clan she would lean on as her mother was exiled from the Jedi Order. Whether Satele has ever seen her mother or not since has remained a matter of speculation that Satele refuses to comment upon. Observers have noted the similarities in Tasiele and Satele in terms of temperment and skill. The end of her Initiate time saw Satele fully embracing the Jedi Order in a way it was felt her mother never did.
While most her fellow Initiates were preparing for the next steps in their Jedi path, Satele's took a darker turn when the Jedi Council delivered to her journals addressed to her by her mother. The Council explained the circumstances of her mother's exile. How it was the result of political pressure from powerful Senators fearful of another Darth Revan. The very name
Revan made her flinch when spoken by the Jedi Masters of the Council. The Masters informed her of Tasiele Shan's disappearance. Initiate Satele Shan accepted their explanation, accepted the journals written for her by her mother, and moved on.
The journals she was allowed to keep in a part of the Archives until she found a better home for them. Moving on became a little easier when the Jedi Council took the unusual step of assigning Satele a Master in Ngani Zho. The years that followed would go a long way in making Satele into a real Jedi, and would begin to give the Jedi Council real concerns. The anxiety and worry wrapped up in the tale of Revan and Bastila were well known not just to the Jedi, but to society as a whole in the Republic. It was a mostly cautionary tale, despite the defeat of Malak.
The Shan family had always lived with it, but up until Tasiele there had never be fallout from it. There were tales and sightings of Tasiele after her exile, but none of them confirmed. It didn't matter, it was enough to spook some people who had been involved in the original exile of Tasiele. When reports started coming in of Satele Shan displaying skill and power that were extraordinary for a Jedi. Eventually the noise grew so loud the Senators intervened again, this time finding out (or outright fabricating) enough on Jedi Master Ngani Zho that the resulting attention from various parties on a single Jedi Padawan that the Council took an even more unusual step, they called in the Padawan in question.
Details of the meeting are fuzzy, but there is a story within the Order that Satele had a Force vision before meeting with the Council and shared it with the wise Masters. The following discussion resulted in Satele's request to transfer to renowned Battlemaster Kao Cen Darach at Korriban in the Esstran sector. There she focused on combat training with a fanaticism that concerned even Kao Cen Darach. The Battlemaster came to firmly believe and trust in Satele, even though there was always something Salele wouldn't tell him. He knew it, she knew he knew it.
When the Sith Empire returned the two shared a look, and finally they both understood. Kao Cen Darah knew Satele had to return to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant and alert the whole galaxy. The following battle saw Satele barely escape with the help of smuggler Nico Okarr and Republic soilder Jace Malcom.
War broke out on a galactic scale as the Sith Empire invaded system after system. Satele played a larger role than even she expected, debriefing the Jedi Council several times and sat in on strategic discussions of the Council. During this early phase of the war she personally witnessed the Coruscant riots. Soon after she began brief stays with various Jedi Masters throughout the galaxy, and the war. Satele found herself in the thick of nearly every sort of military engagement possible, and found herself going toe to toe with her fair share of Sith Warriors.
Suddenly her displays of skill and success didn't scare the politicians so much, at least not most of them, although those skills and victories did still give the Jedi Council pause: war had turned Revan into what he became. What would happen to Satele Shan? The Council acted quickly (for the Council) in apprenticing Satele to the Togruta Jedi Master Dar'Nala, a well known diplomat and political strategist within the Order. The two quickly became close, and with each new mission Satele found wisdom in Dar'Nala's reminders to stay her impatience and aggression. While it may had led to short term victories, the Jedi Master explained, they would ultimately betray Satele's efforts at ultimate peace.
Dar'Nala helped Shan pass her trials and reach the rank of Jedi Knight. The two were permitted to remain assigned together and would spend most of the war serving beside each other in various theaters and in multiple capacities. Satele was present on Alderaan to investigate Sith spies when she came to the assistance of Havoc Squad fighting a much larger Sith force. The conflict would eventually lead to single combat between Satele and Darth Malgus. With a little help from Havoc's Jace Malcom, Satele ended up winning by dropping a small mountain on Malgus' head. Though she suspected Malgus survived, she was glad that most of Havoc had survived. She was glad Jace had survived, she wouldn't have made it away from Korriban without him years before.
That night under an Alderaan night sky Satele fell in love with Jace. The secret relationship that followed haunted Satele with thoughts of Tasiele, her mother, and her mothers beliefs...and her mother's fate. Satele had her mothers journals moved from Coruscant to a safe place on Alderaan where she was still stationed. It was then for the first time Satele really dove into every journal's every page. Satele knew she was pregnant days after conception, a powerful feeling in the Force like she had never felt before. She dreamed of Tasiele, she dreamed of Bastila.
When the time came to tell Jace, Satele asked him about his desire for vengeance and his hatred of the Empire. There in a battlefield camp at wartime, Satele couldn't shake the parallels. She couldn't ignore the spectre hanging in her shadow. Satele would not allow herself to become the next Revan, and in that moment realized Jace Malcom, the person she had fallen in love with...was her single greatest weakness. The dreams of motherhood, of family, it all came crashing down around her. Instead of tell Jace about her pregnancy, Satele broke off their relationship.
The next months saw Satele cement her status as a hero of the Republic time and time again. Whether feats of the Force, dueling, or just the right tactic at the right moment, her reputation began to gain a life of it's own. The truth of it was that she was starting to show, and she risked two lives every time she went into battle: her life and the life of her unborn child. Ngani Zho was the person within the entire Jedi Order that Satele trusted most. Ngani took care of Satele in the later stages of pregnancy, even going so far as to cover it up to the rest of the Jedi Order. Her son was born in secret, she named him Theron.
Satele will never forget the emotions of holding her new baby. Or the emotions of leaving him with Ngani, for the old Jedi Master to raise as his own.
When Satele returned to the battlefield it was at levels never seen before. New inspirations gave birth to new desperations, and ending the decades old conflict became the single thing on Satele's mind battle after battle, year after year. A focus that sunk in deeper still when she witnessed the riots of Coruscant that resulted from the Mandalorion Blockade. The Jedi's failure at breaking the blockade left Satele turning to act. Her target became Rhen Var.
Different reports say variations of the same thing: On Rhen Var Jedi Knight Satele Shan became an unstoppable force, cutting through a menagerie of Sith creations and Imperial troopers on her way to Darth Mehkis of the Dark Council. Though Mehkis escaped, Satele Shan had helped win the day on Rhen Var. The intelligence gathered from Mehkis' fortress would provide information still being used as actionable intelligence to the current day. Not long after Rhen Var Satele was assigned to Alderaan with old friend Dar'Nala. The pair were to attend peace talks with the Empire, itself a surprising offer. Despite Shan's best personal efforts the war was tilting in the Empire's direction. Everyone knew it but few were giving up just yet.
During the conference the Sith attacked Coruscant, and razed the Jedi Temple. Satele drew her saber and charged the Sith envoy, but Dar'Nala intervened. The Sith still wanting to talk peace, afterall, they just wanted to talk peace while they held Coruscant hostage. The terms the Republic contingent agreed to still tests Satele's self control, but at least for the first time in decades there is a break in open war. What Satele never expected was to suddenly find herself fighting beloved friends. Dar'Nala had hated the terms of the treaty more than Satele, but while Satele charged the Sith Dar'Nala hadn't. She had simply plotted to bring the war back in full. The Jedi Master killed Sith and Republic alike in her insane quest. The Sith made the whole thing worse, and in the end Satele was offered a chance to join the Sith Empire. To embrace her true destiny as the blood of Revan.
Satele stopped her old friend, and politely refused the Sith their offer. In her sadness Satele turned inward, escaping into meditation. When her eyes snapped open she knew what she had to do. Or rather, where she had to go. The Force vision she saw in meditation led her down a lost hyperspace route to the world where those who came before the Jedi and the Sith, the Je'daii, and the place where the Jedi Order formally came to be. When she returned from Tython and told the Jedi Council of what she had rediscovered using the Force, the Council voted to grant her the rank of Jedi Master.
Not long after the Council voted to make Satele the new Grand Master of the Order. Her first act as Jedi Grand Master was to orchestrate the moving of the Jedi Order back to Tython, and the reinforcement of Tython into a modern fortress world. This effort led her back into contact with Jace Malcolm, now Supreme Commander of the Republic military. Though they worked well together in establishing the Republic's presence on Tython and within the sector as guests of the Jedi, in private things were tense. Jace had learned of their son, his reaction was...unsurprising in some ways.
Despite this they were able to move as friends working closely together towards an ultimate Republic victory...one way or another, they both know that the war isn't really over yet.
