Current @Ampersand: The Shin Megami Tensei series is a darker Pokemon in many ways, though they tell very different stories. And there's probably lots of monster gacha-games with darker settings.

Further south of Jason's Cave, near the dark, shadowy area where Asura had found Momma Slime, another skeleton rose from the ground. Its bones bore no trace of gristle, meat, or fat, but they were old and cracked in places. Some of its teeth were gone, and it walked with a hunch--obviously, this creature had lived much longer ago than the goblin tribe that had just recently been decimated. It had a much longer dig, but immediately after emerging it too turned towards the distant mouth of Jason's Cave. As if following an invisible trail, it headed towards the pool...

Torrent

You are beginning to experience Stamina Drain due to lack of sleep.
System:Torrent

As Torrent dug down into the ground, she found that her more developed forelimbs and claws were a fair deal stronger than they had been as a lizard. Moving the earth was easy, even in places where it was hard-packed. Clay and loose rocks could be pried out with her sturdy claws, and her limbs moving through the soil felt like a farmer's sharp trowel or plow gliding through loam. Still, moving enough earth to get her entire body through tunnels wasn't an instant process. She burrowed along at about half the speed she could probably have moved up top...but if she went deeper, wouldn't that allow her to remain hidden even without activating her stealth skills? Then again, while she was down here she was practically blind at the moment--there was no light, only the feeling of the earth all around her, and all she had to rely on for her sense of direction was where she had set herself before entering the earth and her own mental imaging.

As she progressed, she had pointed her nose towards the cave's entrance. Every so often she could hear some sound up above her, but nothing as of yet that would be overly alarming. But as she kept digging, she soon felt the soil becoming more damp. Dark, cold, wet pressure surrounded her. No matter how useful this skill, it wouldn't do her any good if she developed claustrophobia.

Between Jason's Tunnels and the Entrance to the cave, however, there was another obstacle.

Torrent suddenly broke through the dirt, but she had not yet intended to return to the surface, had she? And the next instant she was forced backward by water that rapidly began to pour into her tunnel, the stream flowing fast thanks to built up pressure behind it. That flow began to eat away at the edges of the tunnel, causing more water to pour in, and the earth around her to turn into mud and slush that threatened to either drown her or suck her down like quicksand! Had she tunneled into the side of the pool?!

Asteria, Digbie, Oberon (Approaching), Mother Rat

You used Magic Analysis III! This is a Monster. You've never seen this type of monster before. Effectiveness reduced to 30%.
This is a Pygmy Drake. They are more magically inclined than some other low ranking reptile species. This one has 1 activated Spell Skill and three magically related skills. Several other spell skills have not been fully developed yet. This one is unusual.

You are beginning to experience Stamina Drain from lack of sleep.
Your Stamina Drain has slowed, you are well-hydrated. Stamina Drain has not stopped completely.
System:Oberon

As Oberon stopped to drink at the pool, he would notice something on the bank quite a distance away from him, but still within sight. It was a corpse--specifically a Dire Rat. The wounds on its body looked to have come from fangs rather than a weapon or magic, but they were quite vicious nonetheless. From the state of dessication, Oberon could make a reasonable guess that this rat likely had not been killed by any of the reincarnators. More than likely it was just a victim of the usual food-chain in this cave...but then why hadn't it been eaten completely or dragged off for later by whatever creature hunted it? Maybe something had interrupted that meal?

But part of the rat's corpse was in the water of the pool, and from the deeper water where it wasn't quite so easy to see, small fish (though they were still big enough to bite the fingers off someone Oberon's size) were darting out to nibble from it, then heading back to their hideaways. They seemed more energetic than usual, but then again maybe this was just a sign that using fresh bait could net the inhabitants of the cave another food resource.

As Oberon stood from his drink and called out to the others, he would likely notice that in the 24-plus hours everyone had been running about, fighting, etc, that the Healing Herbs growing around the Pool had greatly replenished themselves. With a full day of being relatively undisturbed--or at least not overharvested the way the reincarnators had on their first day--the green sprouts were starting to pop up all over the place, not fully grown but well on their way. Except for those that were an odd, oily black color.

But not too long after he called out, as he continued to search Oberon would see the entrance to Jason's Cave. And heading towards it, a walking, skeletal goblin!

You used Monster Analysis! Effectiveness at 100%, but this is a monster you've never seen before!
---Rain (?)---
Lesserwurm - Related to dragons, but still a cold-blooded reptile, this creature burrows through the earth and fills the enclosed spaces around its prey with poisonous fumes. Its lengthy body is quite fast and deceptively strong, and its ability to shed its skin somehow allows it to heal more quickly. You knew this creature as Rain, the Fanged Lizard. She is a fellow former human like you.

In the moments before Oberon saw the skeleton, and even further back before Torrent began digging her own tunnel, Asteria spent some time developing her skills. By the time Torrent was long gone and Oberon approached the cave, she left on a vague hunch that something was wrong, her Beast Senses sending slight shivers down the back of her neck--for someone who used to be human, having fur that would raise up or hackles that reacted with your mood might be an unusual sensation.

But as soon as she saw the skeleton, Asteria went on the attack! As Oberon watched from up above, she came charging out of the cave, her Faster skill turning her into a streak of fur and fang! The skeleton saw her as well, its empty sockets lighting up as it raised its claw-like hands, jaws clattering.

Asteria angled her way in, before whirling and using her thick muscled tail as a whipping club! The skeleton swiped and missed due to her speed, and her blow met its kneecap with a hearty crack. The creature went down on one leg, but though the bone had been fractured it was still intact. The skeleton held up its arms as Asteria aimed to assault its head, and though her claws and fangs left gouges in the ulna and radius of both limbs the undead managed to keep its brainpan safe. Then, suddenly, the skeleton lashed out--faster than something with no muscles should be able, even faster than a living goblin! Asteria was struck in one side, tossing her back...but as she landed, she would feel that the distance she had traveled seemed to be due to a combination of her own reflexes, jumping back from the hit, and being off balance while attacking the skeleton. The actual hit had done some damage, but not nearly as much.

The skeleton chattered angrily as it stood up, eyes still blazing with ghostly light. It seemed about as sturdy as one would expect of something made from bone--Asteria's experience with cracking the Lizard bones told her it probably had about that same level of durability--and it was faster than a goblin, but its offensive strength was weak! Still, could she afford to underestimate this opponent?

At this moment, Digbie walked outside, calling for the others. He would immediately see Asteria fighting the skeleton, and possibly the new and shiny Oberon hovering up above. And the skeleton also noticed him, turning its head immediately to glare at him with something that seemed like a very specific, very focused hatred.

"Of course Crispy! In exchange for working with us, I can supply you with Healing Herbs and Mana Crystals, the tips of the spikes I summon can be used in the creation of spears, and as time goes on, we will only have more to offer!"

"Hold it, slime!" Crispy held up a hand, taking an authoritative tone despite his disadvantages. He didn't really know any other way to "negotiate," but at least it made the other goblins think he wasn't intimidated by these slimes. "I already gots my gobbos, we can gather stuff on our own! I wants sumfin else!"

"Perhaps... Assisting our purge of the undead is all you need to transform... Together, our power could be unrivaled..." Jason said, before another idea came to mind, "Why, I'd imagine that if we were to work together, you could build an EVEN BIGGER bonfire, make better weapons, and goblins would prosper like never before.... Do we have a deal?"

"You talks too much, too fast!" Crispy snapped.

Asura raised a gooey eyebrow when Crispy said he wasn't doing anything for free. He stayed quiet however and let Jason talk to the goblin. He shook his 'head' a smidge when the other slime started to try and cut a deal. "I was of the mindset that letting you and your other goblins live being your payment until you proved to be trustworthy." He stated as he slithered his way over to Mother Slime. At this, Crispy's eyes slowly moved towards Asura. The variant goblin licked his lips.

"Both 'a yas talks too much!" Crispy said, although his voice was slightly less loud this time. He cleared his throat. "I can change by myself too! And build fire and weapons! Ya gots to give me sumfin dats da same kinda shiny as I can give youse--makes it fair!"

Makes it fair? Was...Was Crispy actually trying to go by some kind of honor code? Did goblins have that? It seemed like Crispy didn't just want things that could be made or gathered, because he and his little tribe could still do that kind of thing for themselves. So was he asking for something specific that goblins had no capability to do by themselves?

"As for giving, I have nothing to give. I'm able to train your goblins smartly but I'd rather keep my knowledge to myself until you and your minions prove useful and, again, trustworthy." Asura continued as he contacted Mother Slime. As she removed her bulk from the torchbearer, both he and the other goblin quickly scurried back to Crispy's side. Because Crispy was already standing next to the shieldbearer, the goblins were now all together again--Crispy's voice recovered some of its volume.

"If I'm gonna help yas get rid of a bunch of zombos or whateva," Crispy started, banging one fist on his chest, "den dat means we're all gonna fight a lot! Lots of risks, need lots udda stuff! We gots ta be...uh...satirical! Makes plans!" He pointed dramatically at the motley group of monsters. "You goes back and thinks bout it! I'mma take my gobs back too! Let's meet tomorrow morning, at da old fire-place--just one of us!" He held up one single finger and looked around at Jason, Asura, Ed, Danny, and Momma Slime. "You picks one guy, and we picks one guy! Den we meets and makes da deal!"

Crispy grinned with a mouth full of yellow teeth, looking like a car salesman waiting for someone to take his offer.

As the Pygmy Drake, Goblin, Fanged Lizard, and Wisp made their way around the pool and towards the entrance of the cave, they soon could see the flickering light of a small campfire. The other two shieldbearers from Orchid's party and the female torchbearer were here, huddled close around the fire and peering out at the cave as if they were terrified. And more than likely this was exactly the case--Crispy had taken the majority of their forces to go check something out, Rattleskull hadn't come back, and they were all on their lonesome in a cave that even they could feel was rapidly changing. Without their tribe around, they were a poor and lonely party constantly on edge.

While one of the shieldbearers was trying to fix his wicker defenses where the Wispmother's attack had broken through it, the other kept watch with his stone spear at the ready. However, because the light of the fire was nearby, his eyes were adjusted to that and not the darkness of the cave.

To Orchid and Ash's small party, this trio would be visible from a further distance. Would they try to sneak around them and avoid conflict? Would they try to finish what the goblins started? Would they try to negotiate? The choice was for the making...but for how long?

Antaeus had no time to think, no time to plan nor consider, no time to do anything but act. Yet there was certainly a logic to his chosen action. Subconsciously, he knew this, and thus chose to do as he did. He had been in a few risky situations in the mines, after all, and had learned from his father--as he had in many other cases--that you had to prioritize. If you tried to help someone else, sometimes you just made things worse. Sometimes you wasted time that could have been spent solving the problem, and because you couldn't help someone else you ended up getting the both of you in even more trouble. Sometimes everyone died in the cave-in because you tried to hold up the support pillar with someone else instead of sounding the warning like they told you.

If he ran from the Stag, it could outrun him. It could kill him. He didn't have the time right now to try and save the Silver Haired girl; he could only hope that she would last just a few moments longer. But if he succeeded, then he could do it. Then they would be safe, at least for a moment.

For right now, he had to fight. It would do no good to try and save someone else if he couldn't save himself. He had to fight the Stag, and he had to win.

Sweat flying from his brow, eyes wide with both terror and adrenaline, he swung the pick with both hands at the White Stag's bleeding and battered form...

"You didn't, Motome-chan. It's cool." The words were out of his mouth as soon as she apologized, and he meant them...but she was still looking at Yashiro. Kenichi gulped as he turned away, rubbing his side.

But now, as he entered the room proper, he saw for himself just what his classmate had really gone through. And, as uncomfortable as he was right now, he still felt a cold pang through his chest. Fast as the crack of a whip, Kenichi's breath caught in his chest for a moment.

A camera lay on its side, still recording despite the chunk of black in the corner of its lens. The aftermath of the bomb left little to see--scattered parts from the jeep, dust clouds swirling in the wind. Blood in the sand. A man's arm barely in frame, not moving. Those who watched the recording later would not be able to see what was going on, only hear the shouting of the soldiers as they shouted and scurried about. At some point, the gunfire began. A hand covered the camera, and everything went dark for several seconds.

Then Kenichi's father appeared, one side of his face caked in blood and dirt. It was so gore crusted that you couldn't even tell that his eye had been blown from the socket.

"Ken-chan...Hotaru...I love you both. But I'm...not done yet." Somehow Yoshida Nobuyuki managed to smile. A big, shit-eating grin. "I'll see you both...soon..."

Another explosion, or something much like it, went off, and the camera went black.

Kenichi hadn't actually seen that recording until after his father had made it back home. Before that, he and his mother had simply suffered through all of their worries, crying and feeling absolutely distraught and helpless, while knowing nothing more than what they could see in the news. He hadn't seen his father until weeks later, after he had finally returned to Japan, and finally been given more than just "keep him stable" surgeries, and finally been moved out of intensive care and to a local hospital. And by that time the leg, the eye, one of the kidneys, two fingers on the left hand, and several pounds of flesh and blood were gone. Some of them would later be replaced, along with a plate in the skull and several screws in the bones of the right arm.

But nothing had ever healed the crack in Kenichi's own heart. Rage and hate had just filled it up instead.

"...Yo. Yashiro-kun." He managed after a long moment of silence. The bones in one of his hands popped as he shoved his fists into his pockets. His tone of voice was hard and flinty, and his grin had twisted into a sour frown. His eyes, however, were much like Fumika's own when he looked at Takeshi. That look of wanting to help, and not knowing how.

"...Looks like somebody really fucked you up, huh?" he said point blank. That...that wasn't how he wanted it to sound. "...Any idea who did it?"

Jason, Ed, Danny, Asura, Momma Slime, Crispy's Party

As Asura whipped Crispy's female minion across the back of her head, she recoiled from the blow and went past Jason without her stone knife making contact. The goblin that Momma Slime was sitting on scrambled desperately to get out from under her weight--she hadn't started crushing or digesting him yet, perhaps because she was wary of taking the time to envelop him while there were still enemies around. So it created the somewhat cartoonish scenario of the goblin, sticking out from the waist up, futilely trying to haul himself out from under the great blue bulk. The other minion was picking himself up off the ground, shaking his head to clear away a hallucination of pixies fluttering around his head. The shieldbearer stayed focused on Jason, though as he glanced towards Asura he was starting to break out in a sweat.

Crispy pulled his own stone knife from his belt, adjusting his grip on it as Asura spoke.

"You're a smart kid, I'm a smart man. I honestly don't really wish to fight you. If you call back your people and return to your fire I can get the other slimes to back off."

The scarred goblin licked his lips, glancing from one slime to the other. They were both so differnt from normal slimes, it was clear they had evolved.

"If it's not too late Crispy, I'd like to apologize for my outburst. Getting betrayed the moment I tried to talk to you made me act irrationally..."

Crispy slowly, without taking his eyes off Jason or Asura, reached down with his free hand to feel the blood running down his leg. He wasn't crippled, it would hurt but he could still run with no real problems. But could he afford to run here...?

"In fact, I was hoping we could work together to cleanse our home of an even greater threat: UNDEAD."

These slimes talked too much. But if they were talking, that gave Crispy time to think--even though he could feel himself getting more annoyed with every word the green pointy slime said, just like when that youngling would ramble on...

"Though their numbers may be small at the moment, they need to be destroyed before the cave is overrun! I can't destroy them all myself Crispy..."

"Un, un-d-d-d-dead!?" chattered the shieldbearer, interrupting the slime and drawing some of the attention off Crispy for the moment. "L-l-like guh-guh-ghosts?!"

Now, all present here no doubt knew by this point that Goblins were not the smartest of creatures. Their brains were like those of children, albeit extremely vicious children. They lacked foresight, they lacked many concepts of abstract thought, they lacked emotional maturity. Crispy both was and was not an exception to this. Crispy had simply survived the best way he knew how.

Rattleskull had been too strong. Crispy couldn't fight him for control of the tribe. But Rattleskull and Crispy had been brothers, and they had both seen and fought Humans before, and they both knew that having more Gobs was better than getting all the Gobs killed. So Rattleskull bossed the others around, and Crispy got what he would have wanted if HE had been the boss anyway--he got to boss around other gobs too, and he got at least one or two mates every season, and he and Rattleskull worked like they had seen the Humans work. Together. A big strong guy, and a guy who could do magic. Crispy was convinced that one day, his fire would be the strongest in the world, and maybe then he would get rid of Rattleskull--but he didn't have to. Sometimes you didn't HAVE to be the biggest and strongest to get what you wanted.

But these Slimes were not Gobs. And they were both changed like Rattleskull. Back when the tribe had been forced to flee that first time, when that youngling had tried to convince them to make friends with the other monsters, Crispy had already known they couldn't afford to wait. The longer you waited to take out an enemy, the more opportunities they had to grow stronger.

"Can I count on you and your fire to make this cave safe, not just for goblins, but for all it's living denizens?"

If Crispy let these Slimes boss him around, he wouldn't have to risk his neck in a fight. But the Slimes would grow stronger. And Crispy would lose face in front of all the other Gobs. But if he fought, he didn't think he could win. And more Gobs would die, and there were already so few of them. What about running away? He still might lose Gobs. He still might die. The Slimes would still grow stronger. And he would still lose face. And this made the short-sighted Goblin rage in Crispy begin to surge--if he didn't have any other option, then he might as well hurt them as badly as he could--!

But...these Slimes were the ones telling him to back down, asking for HIS help. He wasn't asking THEM to spare him. And this caused the opportunistic, cowardly, but still vicious Goblin brain in Crispy--the part of him that had kept him alive in the back row, throwing fireballs at anything that Rattleskull couldn't smash in one blow--to overcome the Goblin rage, just for a moment.

"...Youse says you dun wanna fight, and youse wants me to HELP yas...But I ain't doin' nuffin' for free!" Crispy said, a smile slowly quirking at one corner of his mouth. He acted as if he were relaxed, stepping over to help his female minion to her feet. "What you gots, what ya gonna give Crispy if he helps youse!?"

The torchbearer slapped the ground to get some attention.

"I helps, I helps! Just get dis ting offa me!" The other minion grabbed the goblin by his hands and began pulling as well, although Momma Slime made no move to get off and simply rumbled silently, her mass shifting somewhat between the goblins and Asura as if she were looking at them.

Ardur

As Ardur returned home, his eight legged friend Steve almost seemed happy to see him, despite the inability of spiders to express any discernable emotion. Still, maybe the way it seemed to wiggle was indicative. When Ardur fed the spider it hurried forward to sup as if it were ravenous, but it seemed clear from the other carcasses wrapped up in the web that the creature hadn't been starving in Ardur's absence. Was there some reason for this increase in appetite?

Ardur reached out to use his Taming Skill, and as he touched Steve's back there was a mental "ping" in his mind.

You used Taming I!
Attempting to Tame: Non-Monster, Common Spider Species
You have named this creature Steve.
Taming...Taming...
System:Ardur

It seemed if this process was successful, it wouldn't be immediate. So Ardur returned to his workouts until he had completely exhausted whatever energy he had left, after all that fighting and flying around for almost twenty four hours straight. But when he had finally exhausted himself, and he flopped back onto the floor covered in sweat...

You have used a Mana Crystal. Your MP is Almost Full.
System:Ardur

That large crystal that had been growing in his cranny cave for some time suddenly began to disappear. He must have been close enough for it to activate! He felt his MP recover, though by now he had gained a little bit more of it through level ups, if the fact that it didn't top him up completely was any indicator. With this MP, he could cast his Heal spell on himself to recover from the muscular damage of his exercises--it wouldn't restore his stamina, but it might make the process of getting Stronger a little faster.

But before Ardur could sleep, there was another "ping." Except it didn't come from him. When he looked for the source, he would find a large, web-spun coccoon in the place of his friend Steve.

Taming Successful!
You have tamed Steve, a Non-Monster Common Spider Species!
...What's this?
A Creature you have Tamed is Transforming!
System:Ardur

Transforming!? Was this the result of Ardur's care and semi-symbiotic relationship with Steve, not just from his attempt at Taming it but from the moment the pixie had been reborn in this world and begun trying to keep the spider as a pet? Was that also why it seemed like Steve's appetite had grown? But Steve was just a normal, non-Monster spider, right? Did non-magical or "normal" beings in this world grow and evolve too? Perhaps, in his former life, Ardur had heard or read of the supernatural beings in some Asian cultures--like spirit foxes--that gained power after living for a long time or being affected by other supernatural forces.

After several long minutes, the web-coccoon split open. And Steve emerged.

Tamed Creature Status:
Name: "Steve"
Gender: Female
Species: Oculus Spider - A low-ranking Arachnid-class Insect-type Monster. While it possesses venom, it is not that much more potent than a normal spider and thus is virtually harmless to humans save in very large doses or in the case of specific allergies. However, because it has adapted to Mana in its environment and thus become a Monster, it has gained a large eye that works differently than its normal eyes. It will swing from a web in a hypnotic manner to entice prey.
Appearance:
Abilities:

  • Level 1

    • Web Spit - Spit a glob of sticky web at an opponent. Deals very little damage, but may Slow an enemy's movement.
    • Doze - For the Oculus Spider, this spell is cast using their eye as a catalyst. May inflict Sleep on a single target.

Transformations:
Common Spider Species > Oculus Spider

Inventory:
Stomach Sac - 0/3 Slots Filled. Small Items only.
System:Ardur

Steve had grown quite considerably in size, being roughly the size of a spider from the real world called a Goliath Birdeater. Her hard exoskeleton appeared much tougher, however, and save for her furry backside she seemed to have few vulnerable areas. Now, however, a small glowing mark appeared on the section of exoskeleton between her head and the bottom of that large eye on her back. After a moment the light died down, but the mark, almost like a tattoo, remained to show that Ardur's Taming had been completed.

Steve immediately scuttled over towards the pixie and nudged his leg softly with one of her own. She looked up at him, and "waved" with several of her other legs.

Asteria, Digbie, Mother Rat

While the others seemingly left them behind, Asteria and Digbie set out to dig their tunnel despite the earlier change it had caused in Jason. Mother Rat, having found a safe space near the back of Jason's garden chamber, curled up to sleep as she was clearly exhausted from all the battles and running around of the last day-night cycle. They might have seen Rain/Torrent emerge from her shell with an all new form.

But what none of them could see, at the moment, was a patch of dirt near a large, rocky outcrop somewhat between the pool area and the nesting area where many Dire Rats and Fanged Lizards had been seen. This patch began to shiver, until finally a hand burst through the earth and grasped the soil between its fingers. But this hand had no flesh.

Covered in bits of gristle and blood, with dangling bits of tendon that had not yet dried into jerky, and yellow crusts that had once been fat scattered over its form, the skeleton pulled itself from its shallow grave. Its skull was oversized for its proportions, and its spine was somewhat hunched now that no muscle could support the head's weight. It had large ridges where pointed ears and a somewhat bulbous nose had once been attached to it, and stood roughly three feet tall. In the depths of its eye sockets, green, sickly fire flickered alight.

With a slow, jerky, mechanical gait, the skeleton began to walk towards Jason's cavern. Every so often it turns its skull this way and that, looking at its surroundings. It moved into the shadows whenever it could, but it did not seem to be trying to hide its presence...it was more like it was avoiding something in its path, walking around an obstacle that only it could see.

Slowly, it came closer and closer to Jason's cave, as if it knew exactly where it was headed...

Torrent

As Torrent struggled and fought her way back to her body, the air seemed as thick around her as gelatin. And while her physical form lay in the proximity of that odd crystal, it almost seemed like that red Dungeon Core was watching her, an inhuman eye simply floating and observing. But as her anger drove her on, she finally managed to touch a slightly transparent claw to the mass of swollen, dead skin that had become her body. With a sound like a sudden intake of breath, she was drawn back into the physical realm!

The first thing Torrent could feel upon awakening was how cramped her back was--and just how much back there was to cramp. Her abs hurt like she had been doing situps all day, but the pain went down much lower than just her stomach. And as the pain grew more intense, the only thing she could do was reflexively try to stretch and twist. With her claws she reached out, pushing at this shell around her--

The dead skin of a former Fanged Lizard split open, and with her scales bright and shining Torrent the Lesserwurm emerged into the world. She looked like a fantasy version of a skink lizard, her head being more bony with scaly outcrops along her snout and over the ridges on her eyes. Though she had no back legs, her front limbs had become somewhat longer and stronger. While she didn't have true thumbs, her claws had been reduced to three digits, two of which were longer and the third of which was shorter, thicker, and set at an angle to the others. It was a bit like a human's hand making a constant "Spock-hand" by holding the index-middle and pinky-ring fingers in pairs and curling the thumb. The joints of these "fingers" and the natural curl of her claws gave her a stronger grip that she could feel even as she began to pull herself along the ground--she would be able to pull, or to scoop and dig, quite fast if she felt so inclined. She was roughly twice as long as her previous form, though not so heavy-set throughout her body. As her tail instinctively lashed behind her, she would likely feel confident that she could easily contort herself in a variety of shapes.

But, now that she was awake...

Mourningstar, Oberon (Unconscious), Jason, Ed, Danny, Crispy's Party, Asura (Unconscious), Momma Slime

SUB-BOSS POSITIONS UNAVAILABLE AT CURRENT DUNGEON LEVEL. INCREASE THE LEVEL OF "THE OTHERWORDLY CAVERN" TO INSTALL SUB-BOSS APPLICANTS.
Dungeon:Jason

It seemed Jason would not be able to force the Dungeon Core to recognize Asteria just yet. He would have to find some way to increase the Dungeon's level...whatever that meant. Increasing his own level was one thing, all he had to do was keep surviving and learning. But how did one "level up" a dungeon--essentially a location, not a living being in and of itself?

At the moment, however, he had other things to worry about. He raced off back towards Rattleskull's corpse for some reason...was it perhaps his connection to the dungeon telling him that something was happening? How else would he so conveniently know that he needed to head that way to get involved in a large-scale scuffle no doubt about to happen? But before doing this he grabbed 3 herbs from his garden, reducing the total count to 7 green herbs and 1 odd black one.

As Mourningstar prepared her Mana Blade, a Fireball sprung into existence between Crispy's palms and the goblins following him began to slowly spread out. Whether to get away from the ensuing explosion or to surround the Wisp wasn't clear just yet--but when Jason came rolling onto the scene, he immediately used his War Cry and caused all of them to turn towards him.

"Mourningstar! Stand down!"

"Mid-boss, dat slime just talked!"

"Would you shut the fuck up!?"

"I know he talked ya dum, dese Mobs is weird like dat!"

"Crispy! I'm not here to fight you. I'm here to make you an offer--"

"Oh shit, oh shit oh shit oh shit--!"

As Mourningstar's spell misfired, the goblins reflexively drew back until they realized the spell had hit someone else. Crispy narrowed his eyes as he tried to figure out what was going on, but the others were confused and hesistant.

"Mid-boss, which one do we attack!?"

"He killed Rattleskull, not me!"

"FUCK. DIPLOMACY. YOU ALL--"

"Shaddup, all of yas get ready for dat Slime!"

"--DIE! ROCK SPIRE--EARTH'S WRATH!"

Between Jason's raging and the glow coming from those lights on the ground, Crispy saw the attack coming and leaped back out of the target area, hurling his Fireball as he did so. He had no way of knowing, however, that the upgraded Rock Spire spell produced three spikes instead of one. In a straight line between Jason and Crispy, starting from those rings of light, the earthen spires shot up one after another. The rocks and soil upheaved with them gave the impression that some kind of enormous mole was chasing Crispy from beneath the earth, and the last spike caught the goblin on the side of his leg just after he relased his own spell.

At the same time Crispy cried out, his blood spattering the ground, Jason got a faceful of fire. Earlier he had been hit with a torch and it hadn't hurt too badly--but this was real magic, and it was more powerful than Crispy's earlier fireballs the group had seen. Without any resistances to it, despite having high natural defenses Jason felt an incredible amount of pain as the flames surged over his membrane, leaving blackened spots on his "hat". The explosive impact knocked him over, interrupting his attempt to cast his Mind Wave spell.

It was at this point that the Shield Goblin charged forward, thrusting with his spear while he kept the defensive implement up in front of his body. Its stone tip pierced Jason's hide and then yanked back out in a swift motion before the goblin drew back--he had learned by this point that Slimes didn't take a lot of physical damage, but they could trap one's weapon inside their bodies. Still, every bit of damage helped. And as the Shield Goblin stepped back from his own attack, one of Crispy's minions--a female--came from Jason's other side with a scream, rapidly swinging her sharp stone knife...

But before the other two goblins could join in, they noticed something that stole their breath away. Their green skin practically turned white as they pointed and began to jabber in fear.

"M-m-m-m-mid-boss, IT'S DA B-B-BOSS!"

Rattleskull's body began to stand up. Without his head.

The huge, furry shoulders lifted one by one. The torso began to rise up until it was standing on its knees...

And out from underneath came something huge and blue that made a distinct, almost happy blurbling sound.

"AM BOO SHA!" rumbled Momma Slime as she tossed off her "camoflage", before using her huge psuedopod to "backhand" Crispy's other minion head over heels across the rocks, then falling with her entire mass onto the unfortunate torchbearer. The goblin managed a scream as his torch was knocked out of his grip.

You used Monster Analysis I!
---???---
This is a Fanged Lizard undergoing Transformation. Fanged Lizards are a reptilian monster with potent venom. When injected via a bite, it acts as a neurotoxin to paralyze the prey. When exposed to the air, it becomes a highly acidic liquid. The lizard can spit at a distance. However, this one has either lived long enough or become strong enough to Transform into another type of creature. It's extremely vulnerable during this process. This one is unusual. You think her name was Rain. She is like you.
---Crispy---
You have analyzed this type of Monster before. Effectiveness boosted.
This is a Goblin. A semi-intelligent monster with the limb dexterity and mental capacity to use tools. By comparison, usually as large, strong, and intelligent as a human child, but far more vicious. This particular specimen is an adult male, and you have learned his name is Crispy. He possesses an unusual Variant that has given him a magical skill involving fire. He has a Torch and a well-made Stone Knife on his person to use as weaponry.
---Analysis Complete---
System:Danny

As Danny watched from afar, he saw Jason and Crispy's spell flinging duel and the other goblins rushing to assist. He also witnessed Momma Slime's ambush, and saw Asura come out of his temporary coma in an all new form. If he were to join the battle, his fellow reincarnators would equal the Goblins in number, but so far it seemed like none of the enemies had noticed him yet. Did he want to take that risk...?

Oberon (Regains Consciousness), Mourningstar (After Fleeing)

"You are not the one either, yet you are also a human in the form of a monster..." The blue eyes didn't seem to have heard Oberon properly at first. They looked down at his body, being carried away by Mourningstar, and then over to the red slime that now seemed to be moving again.

"Spirit, if you remember anything...bring a Human to this place! Find a Hero!" The eyes seemed to be growing more distant now...but they made one final effort.

"I...am not the one that binds you here...This Place does not...know you. But outside, the World...knows you do not belong..." It seemed the eyes were going to say something else...but they drifted away before Oberon could learn anything else.

And then he felt something in the air snap.

The bundle being carried by Mourningstar suddenly gave a kick like a baby in the womb. If her Lesser Force hadn't been ranked up recently, she probably would have lost her grip entirely. The wings that Oberon had wrapped around himself suddenly cracked, their translucent shimmer gone dull and dead and gray. But as they unfurled, falling away like shedding scales, long and thin spirals of bright color were left in their place. And these rolls unfurled like sails, blood pumping through them as they inflated to proper size, revealing Oberon's body.

He hadn't changed much in size, but his skin had become porcelain in color, as if he had been covered in geisha makeup from head to toe. His hair was the same color but had become far more vivid in shade and tone, standing out in stark contrast to the rest of him. It almost seemed like he shimmered, reflecting light from the Wisp's body and other sources. And his wings, once they were done stretching out, had become like those of a butterfly complete with a distinctive pattern.

But now that he was awake...

Asura (Regains Consciousness, sees Battle)

As Asura struggled and fought his way back to his body, the air seemed as thick around him as gelatin. When you were made of gelatin yourself, that made for a very difficult swim. Yet still he struggled, and when he was finally close enough to stretch a pseudopod towards his body, something gave way. With a distinctive, slimy slurp, his astral form was sucked back into the physical world!

TRANSFORMATION COMPLETE!
Slime > (Immature) Amorphous Slime
You have Transformed!
All base Speed-stats have increased!
You have not reached your full Potential. Your stat increase has been reduced.
All base non-defensive stats have slightly increased.
You have increased the Rank of your skill, Limited Shapeshift!
Limited Shapeshift II > Limited Shapeshift III!
You can now alter a single property of your body with the appropriate shape. For instance, a pseudopod with an edge could become Sharp, or the surface of your membrane could become Hard. However, only one property may be altered at a time, and these properties are not equivalent to higher ranking physical materials such as steel swords or stone clubs. Your maximum "reach" with stretched portions of your body remains the same. While maintaining your original mass your ability to alter fine details is increased. A "blade" made from your body could be shaped in various ways, for instance, but a pseudopod with a blade at its tip would not be so refined; this would apply to other features like imitated body parts or facial traits.
System:Asura

The red egg expanded as if it had transformed from a shell to a yolk. Indeed, as bits of him began to drip and flow, Asura found himself "growing" about a quarter again his original size. The difference was that, aside from a lumpy bit in the center that more or less resembled a half-sized version of his original body, all this extra mass seemed to be liquid rather than jello. There was a limit to how far he would expand, unlike a true fluid, and he could draw himself into a larger lump if he so wished, but this seemed to be the default form of an Amorphous Slime.

But, now that he was awake...

Orchid, Ash, Reoth, Mourningstar (Approaching), Oberon (Approaching)

Though she stumbled and fell, Orchid managed to protect herself and didn't fall into any of the other traps. As she regained her footing she would notice that she was bleeding, but while it might need bandaging it didn't seem like it was a gusher or anything. She would then notice what had pricked her, now that her bright red blood made the Poisoned Bone Needles more visible. Whether because too much time had passed, or the small dosage used on the needles, the goblin had avoided a damaging infection for the moment...but how many more traps were around here? Had those other monsters set them?

Ash, staying alert, managed to catch the telltale signs of Asteria and Ed's digging and avoided the traps for herself. As she approached Orchid, the two of them saw Mourningstar heading towards them, and the Pygmy Drake requested that Reoth move to help them. From this distance they would soon witness Oberon's Transformation, a rather dazzling spectacle.

An open patch of dirt on the opposite side of the pool from Jason's cave now had a fresh looking lump in it. From the top of that lump, a single piece of a gossamer, insect-like wing stuck up in the open air. The lump wiggled, and the wingtip disappeared under the dirt. Then the lump seemed to settle down and go quiet.

All around the cave, these odd, fresh piles of earth were beginning to appear. There were fewer of them near the entrance, and near areas where the morning sun sent shafts of daylight through the cave.

Ardur, Asteria, Danny, Digbie, Ed, Jason, Mother Rat

While Jason was thrashing in mental agony, Ed tried to find a way to help but to no avail. Ardur took action in using his healing spell, and while it did recover what HP Jason had lost during the battle thanks to the more powerful rank III, it didn't have any effect on what was happening. But as Jason gleefully threw himself at the odd red thorns sprouting from the Core crystal, they only slightly punctured his membrane. He didn't seem to be taking any damage from them--but a connection of some form was made. The golden "veins" across Jason's body from his Variance were now flecked with red, as if the gold had rusted...or as if drops of blood had dried on its surface.

As Asteria tried to study the Dungeon Core, and then used Mana Drain on it, her newfound sixth sense suddenly gave her a feeling similar to being deep, deep under water. A pressure, pushing against her senses, an overwhelming force that wasn't quite hurting her, but simply feeling it was oppressive and ominous. As soon as her skills had been used it was gone...but she also felt, for the briefest moment, like someone was watching her.

The red thorns retracted from the outer surface of the crystal, but they were still visible on the surface of the Core deep inside the green pillar. And now that red sphere began to spin, slowly, tilting like a planet on its axis.

Jason slowly began to stir back to wakefulness.

As Digbie struck the wall of the cave again and again with his pickaxe, he neither felt nor heard any response to his message meant for the Demon King. It didn't have the reverence or ceremonial feel of a prayer, more as if he were simply talking to himself, as if he were back in his own world and saying "Christ, what have I gotten myself into?" And, perhaps for the same reasons, there was no response.

Until he too felt as if something was watching him.

As Jason received his Quest, the next step on his journey to conquer this cave and become its master, he also received two warnings. As he would no doubt look around to ascertain the well being of his little group, he would immediately notice Asteria and Digbie.

What the hell were they doing!? Asteria shouldn't be messing with the Dungeon Core! He was the boss here, it was HIS Dungeon Core! And Digbie, what made him think he could just dig as he pleased here!? This was Jason's cave, HE was the one who had worked so hard on it! Only him! And now this was HIS dungeon, only HIS, he couldn't let ANY harm come to it!

Torrent

As Rain attempted, through an odd fog akin to the feeling one has when they are just coming out of a dream or a deep sleep, the feeling of being aware that you are not asleep and yet having no control over your senses, only a vague sense of being...

As Torrent attempted, through this odd feeling, to look back at the blue eyes she could feel looking back at her, almost through her, the blue eyes seemed to come closer.

"You are not the one...but you are supposed to be human? This is not right. Spirit...if you remember anything...leave this place!"

The eyes were drawing further away from Torrent, down into the pool. The voice grew tired, yet also strained.

"Leave this place, Spirit! But bring back...bring back Humans! Bring back a Hero!" The voice ceased. The eyes were gone.

Torrent could feel herself slowly drifting back down now. Back towards her body. But she was going slowly, veeeerrrryyy slooooowlyyyy...

Mourningstar

The process of wearing Rattleskull's head was really a very involved one. After cutting it off his body--rather roughly, one might add--the "innards" had to be removed. But these same "innards" were what gave the head its shape to begin with. Rattleskull had been the largest monster in the cave, but even he probably could not have eaten a Wisp's body in one bite. Even if he could, there was a reason most predators had teeth, and omnivores chewed their food. Thus, his throat cavity was not big enough to allow Mourningstar entrance. Removing the vertebrae from his spinal column helped somewhat, but the more muscle she cut away the less like a head her grisly trophy appeared and more like a mess of meat. And of course, once she had worked her way up into his throat cavity, all that really allowed her to do was enter his mouth--which at this point smelled like a garbage heap. In order for her to actually get inside his head, she would have to somehow burrow her way through his skull. Did she even have anything at this point that could be used to break through solid bone?

She was still able to simply use her Mana Slice to cut off part of his lower jaw, but this left his tongue hanging down from the back of his throat behind her, trailing blood the whole time as she floated there. And her levitation was significantly slowed as well, with all of this weight on top of her.

But if all she was going for was sheer squick factor? This was pretty high on the scale.

"Mid-boss, I sees da--KYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH?!"

Crispy and his four selected goblins all readied their weapons, their shocked faces full of confusion and fear. Crispy himself did seem just as shocked, but he didn't show any signs of intimidation and instead angrily began barking orders.

"STOP YELLIN'!" he barked, pulling his Stone Knife from his belt and beginning to move in a partial crouch, ready to make use of his speed to slash and stab with the weapon. "Dey killed da Boss by gangin' up on 'em, but look! There's just one left now!"

"But what about dem tings? What dey?" Orchid's shieldboy held up his Wicker Shield in front of himself and pointed at Asura and Oberon's still forms with his spear, though his eyes darted nervously between them and Mourningstar.

"Shaddap! Kill dat Wisp first!" Crispy swung a torch in his other hand, using it to point at Mourningstar. After a moment's hesitation, the other three goblins charged at her--and if she ran, she would be leaving her two allies to their mercy...

Oberon

Oberon found that despite his attempts, he couldn't make use of any of his skills while in this...astral form, or whatever it was. In fact, now that he had put some effort into moving his body and using his magic and senses, he actually found that whatever state he was in was not entirely unfamiliar. It felt like that very first moment...that infinite white expanse, where he met the King of Demons. That place where he had been Damned to this new fate.

But as he struggled with these sensations, he suddenly felt as if he were being watched. In the distance, coming from far away...and coming from under the ground...a pair of blue eyes seemed to be looking right at him...

Asura

Asura, by sheer unyielding force of will, felt himself beginning to descend. But it was so slow, and every movement was a struggle. It was like trying to swim through pudding. And down below he could see the goblins coming closer, charging at Mourningstar. His body, and Oberon's, were still lying senseless.

He was going down, but so veeeeeerrrrrry sloooooowllyyyyy...

But...where had Momma Slime gone?

Orchid, Ash, Reoth

As Orchid headed back towards the Bonfire, she would need to pass by the pool. Sound carried further over water than it did over land, and as a result she could hear some kind of commotion coming from the rock cluster and cave walls across the pool...but she couldn't discern any specific words, only what might have been vague yelling here or there.

But then, as she got closer, suddenly the ground beneath her foot gave way.

It wasn't a pitfall or sinkhole, but it would likely trip her up nonetheless. The real problem, as she felt a sting in her foot and felt her body weight shifting, were the bony needles she could suddenly see rushing up towards her so fast--!

A New Dawn: Day 9 Since Rebirth. Day 3 Of Adventure.

DUNGEON [OTHERWORLDLY CAVERN] IS NOW STABILIZING. ALLOTTING RESOURCES...

ASSIMILATION RATE: 0.2%
SYSTEM

This long night had finally become a new morning. Outside the cave, filtering through the entrance now coated in ash and smoke, the hazy blue of dawn began to wet the grass. Around the cave, areas began to get brighter as the cracks and crevices seemed to breathe tendrils of morning fog.

Despite having been up all night, and most of the day before, it seemed the Goblins and their unnatural enemies were still soldiering on...but for how long until exhaustion, or their foes, overwhelmed them...?

Ardur, Asteria, Danny, Digbie, Ed, Jason, Mother Rat, Rain

Skill Gain: Taming I!
Many species have dominated or relied on each other throughout history. In a manner similar to social and charisma based skills, you use magic to form bonds with other creatures. At this rank, you may only attempt to tame one creature. If you switch to another, the former will be released from the bond. At this rank, you may only attempt to tame creatures at least one level below your own. At this rank, you must still entice the creature with things like food or protection. You may need multiple attempts. When Taming is complete, a personalized magical mark will appear on the creature.

Skill Gain: Fireball I!
The fire-themed version of a basic magical attack. With roughly the same power, range, and MP consumption as a Mana Orb, it has the unique property of being able to inflict a burn on the target. However, as an elemental spell, these same properties render it harder to use in certain circumstances. Non-flammable or elementally opposed targets, for example, will be much less effected.
System:Ardur

Skill Gain: Mana Sense I!
You have sharpened your mental and spiritual senses as well as your physical ones. By focusing upon a single creature or object, you will be able to sense its magical nature in some fashion. Different creatures may perceive this aura in different ways--some may see a colored aura, others may catch unique scents, etc. This is not an Analysis skill, though it may Synergize with some of them. The range of this skill is limited to that of your other physical senses, though in some cases a mana signature may become easier or more difficult to detect depending on factors such as strength, amount, etc. By touching an object or creature, even if they are somehow suppressing their magical power, you have a chance to learn whether or not magic is present. At this rank, you must activate this skill in order for it to take effect. While active it will consume MP.

Skill Gain: Mana Drain I!
You have experienced the flow of mana inside your own body, and felt the energy of other creatures being used upon you. Like siphoning water through a tube, this ability allows the user to draw the energies of others into themselves. By using Stamina, you will drain MP from an opponent and add it to your own. However, certain factors may come into play--you are not guaranteed to restore the exact same amount of MP that you drain. At this rank, in order to use this skill you must be touching the creature or object to be drained. While you are using this skill you cannot use any other spell or skill that is offensive in nature or requires complex movements.
System:Asteria

You used Monster Analysis I!
--Jason--
Stone-Hardened Mage Slime: Slimes are normally of limited intelligence, but every so often one somehow learns magic. With its poor magic stats its casts are limited in number, but few expect a Slime to have such abilities. This one has somehow earned the Stone Hardened Variance, signifying a bond of some sort with the Earth element. This one is unusual. You have learned his name is Jason.
System:Danny

Skill Gain: Taboo I
You have gained a "cursed skill." Those with sharp senses may detect your true nature...Even now, the evil seed of what you've done germinates within you...

Skill Gain: Stronger I!
You have grown stronger through tough training! Tear muscles down, and rebuild them anew! Your physical power stats have increased! By gaining at least one rank of Faster, Harder, and Better, Skill Synergy will occurr and you will gain one rank of Physical Conditioning.
System:Digbie

You used a Mana Crystal! MP is now Full.
You placed Mana Crystals into your Lizardskin pouch. It will hold for now, but its durability is reaching the limit...
Obtained Mana Crystal x10
System:Ed

Skill Gain: Mind Wave I!
This spell uses a wave of psionic force to attack an opponent's mind directly. It may Confuse them temporarily. At this rank the spell requires eye-contact, and thus its range is limited by the user's eyesight. Its MP cost is slightly higher than that of most first level spells, but it is very difficult to dodge due to Psionic mana lacking many of the visually distinct characteristics of other spells.

Skill Rank Up: Rock Spire II!
MP Cost increased. Number of Spires increased to 3. Each spire does the same amount of damage and has the same range as before.
System:Jason

Skill Gain: Fireball I!
The fire-themed version of a basic magical attack. With roughly the same power, range, and MP consumption as a Mana Orb, it has the unique property of being able to inflict a burn on the target. However, as an elemental spell, these same properties render it harder to use in certain circumstances. Non-flammable or elementally opposed targets, for example, will be much less effected.

Skill Gain: Stealth Kill I!
By concentrating your Stamina at the moment of a sneak attack, you can (without sound or visual effects) increase the power of a single blow. A target's active resistance against you will disrupt the various forms of breathing, focus, movement, etc. required to focus Stamina into this technique, so it will not work in open combat.
System:Rain

Jason immediately roared to get everyone's attention, and while barely even giving the others time to follow his orders immediately tore off back towards his cave. Ardur, Danny, and Digbie followed almost immediately, but Asteria was slower because she had to convince Mother Rat. The animal had been less active since the fight with the Brawny goblins, and looked at Asteria with bleary eyes. No creature could go without sleep forever, after all. But eventually she roused herself and followed after her offspring.

Rain experimented with her newfound Fireball spell, and though it appeared in midair above her head like someone had thrown a match at gasoline fumes, it didn’t seem quite as stable as Crispy’s had. It shot upwards towards the ceiling, but it didn’t explode. That was probably just because it was rank one, but still...it didn’t seem like its trajectory was quite as controlled, either. It almost seemed like...she needed a way to contain it? After all, Crispy basically formed his between his hand and then pitched them like baseballs. Could she do that without hands of her own?

Ed used his worn and muddied Lizardskin Sack to try and gather up the Mana Crystals around the Bonfire. The first one he touched, however, immediately dissolved and restored his Below Average MP to Full. The other ten fit into the bag, but their sharp bits were bulging and puncturing it at points. It probably wouldn’t last too much longer…

Once the group had arrived, with Rain and Ed bringing up the rear, they found Jason’s Cave virtually the same as the green slime had left it. However, it seemed that with his careful care rather than the haphazard state of nature, and the lack of wounded creatures around to munch on them, those 8 Healing Herbs he had planted had sprouted and grown well in such a short time. It seemed some of the seedlings had even sprouted offshoots of their own--instead of 8, there were now 11 Herbs available...although, one set of them had turned a rather foreboding, oily shade of black…

As Rain backed herself into a corner her decision became concrete inside her mind, and she suddenly felt a deep and powerful sleep come over her. It was too fast, and there was no fighting it--just like going under before a surgery.

And as she went under, she rose up and up and up. Rain's body gave several jerks as her consciousness faded, and each time she seemed just that little bit bigger. Then, after becoming somewhat bloated, her skin began to change. It rapidly began to dry out and lose its color. And somewhere deep inside, something began to pulse...

Rain suddenly saw EVERYTHING.

Not in crystal clarity, of course. But she drifted upwards, out of her body, rising high enough that she could look out across the cave. And sometimes it seemed as if she saw through it--into the small nest where she had been reborn. And all around and through Jason’s cave. And just barely up through the ceiling of the cave into the skies above, and out into the forest--but really, it was just a vague sense that they were there. She hadn’t risen high enough to see them yet…

But even though she felt like she should have kept going up, she didn’t.

The world turned red for a moment, like looking at it through literal rose tinted glasses. She was still floating in the cave, above her own body, above everyone else, looking out and over and through and into. Now that she wasn’t going up and up anymore, she could look around with a sense of leisure. She could see Crispy and his group making their way towards the cave...and the currently helpless bodies of those who had also begun their evolutions. She could even see down into the depths of the central pool, down, down, down...through solid rock and packed earth, into a hollow chamber shimmering with the water’s reflection…

Something with blue eyes looked back at her.

Dungeon:Rain

Rain suddenly felt stuck. And something was still staring at her…

System:Jason

This was the point at which Jason averted his eyes, but it was too late to stop the splitting, burning, twisting, non-euclidean pain ripping him apart from the soul outwards. The next thing that happened was that he touched the crystal, directly over the red, now pulsing core.

Dungeon:Jason

Jason’s head was splitting with pain. He was on the verge of unconsciousness. Through this fog, however, one train of thought somehow, impossibly, managed to stay on the rails. This was his new home. He had been reborn here. This was his place. These creatures were his soldiers. Just like back home. He was a warlord. He could rule this place. He could make it right. Only him. Only him...He had to protect this place...he had to make this place better…

Asura, Mourningstar, Oberon

Skill Gain: Harder I!
You have toughened yourself up through training! Clenched muscles or hardened flesh can be an effective shield--your base defensive stats increase! By gaining at least one rank in Faster, Stronger, and Better, Skill Synergy will occurr to increase the rank of Physical Conditioning.

Skill Gain: Counter I!
When activated at the moment you are struck by an enemy's attack, your own attack will gain power based in proportion to the damage you took. However, it is limited by the amount of power your own body can produce, and the efficiency of the counter. It is not a direct mirror of the opponent's strength.
System:Asura

Skill Gain: Alert I!
Though this skill is limited by the strength of your senses, and does not sharpen your senses on its own, it allows you to become more aware of your surroundings. Without conscious effort, you will pick up on signs in your environment more easily, especially if they present some form of danger to you. Essentially this is an anti-ambush skill.
System:Oberon

As the others immediately ran off, Asura and Mourningstar set about removing Rattleskull’s head and some of his flesh in some rather gruesome, but ultimately effective, ways. Almost as soon as that was done, however, and Asura and the Pixie had made their choices to evolve…

They both dropped like rocks.

Asura, unconscious of this by himself, began to mold and tighten his body until he appeared more like a red egg than a slime. Oberon, also merely by reflex without any waking choice, curled himself into a fetal position before wrapping himself in his wings, which began to glitter as if they were caught in full sunlight.

And as they went under, they rose up and up and up. Suddenly, though neither of them could see each other, they could see EVERYTHING else.

Not in crystal clarity, of course. But they drifted upwards, out of their bodies, rising high enough that they could look out across the cave. And sometimes it seemed as if they saw through it--into all the nooks and crannies and dark corners, even the places where they were born. And all around and through Jason’s cave. And just barely up through the ceiling of the cave into the skies above, and out into the forest--but really, it was just a vague sense that they were there. They hadn’t risen high enough to see them yet…

But even though they felt like they should have kept going up, they didn’t.

The world turned red for a moment, like looking at it through literal rose tinted glasses. They were still floating in the cave, above their own bodies, above everyone else, looking out and over and through and into. And they could see that, over in Jason’s cave, something was beginning to happen to that red core. It seemed to be more solid now, and its surface seemed to be gaining a texture. No longer the smooth, seemingly perfect crystalline sphere, it was beginning to grow small spikes, thorns, all over...and then from these thorns, smaller thorns also grew. They only grew in straight lines, giving an odd impression of circuitry. And they seemed to be growing towards Jason, who now slumped listlessly at the base of the large green crystal that housed the Core…

Dungeon:Asura/Oberon

Asura and Oberon suddenly felt stuck for some reason...and as they watched, Mourningstar stood among their helpless bodies down below...While Crispy and his gang approached in the distance.

Orchid, Ash, Reoth

Skill Gain: Taboo I
You have gained a "cursed skill." Those with sharp senses may detect your true nature...Even now, the evil seed of what you've done germinates within you...
System:Orchid

In the slowly approaching daylight, Orchid might be able to more easily find these holes that Crispy spoke of. After all, they would be the cause of those natural shafts of sunlight that lit up some portions of the cave, right? But now that she had emerged from her old skin, the lack of Stamina Ash had noticed before hadn't recovered very much. She could still feel a powerful thirst, and that shortlived evolutionary nap hadn't really rested her at all. Plus, she still had to get used to her new body...her four legs were now much longer and more functional, and she had a brand new pair of wings. While she couldn't hold tools without thumbs, she seemed to at least have the same dexterity one might expect out of a small or slightly clumsy feline. Not that she really needed that ability, with Lesser Force available to her now.

You have gained a Unique Equipment: Vine Body Wrap!
Normally Dire Rats cannot use equipment. This item, normally a belt for a humanoid creature, has been wrapped around your entire body. If you can find a way to fasten it, you may be able to use it without an equipment skill. However, due to its unsuitable nature, its bonuses to your stats will not be as great, and in some cases may be negated entirely.

YOUR BODY IS BEGINNING TO CHANGE! You are undergoing Transformation! Based on your life experiences, your ability to survive, and the strength of your will, new paths have appeared! Choose carefully--there is no going back! WARNING. THIS PROCESS WILL LEAVE YOU TEMPORARILY VULNERABLE.

OPTIONS (* Indicates Suitability):
*(Adult) Dire Rat - Dire Rats are quite large and strong for rodents, with sharp senses. They are predator scavengers, and because their teeth constantly grow they forage and gnaw constantly. Their forepaws are somewhat capable of gripping and manipulating, but they aren’t very skilled. Rats often hunt in packs, composed of family units, but the mothers will often drive off the fathers as they will behave aggressively towards the young.
  • Slight Increase to all Base Stats
  • Increase HP
  • Increase Potential

(Immature) Giant Rat - Giant Rats are rodents of such unusually large size, many people don't believe they exist. Their behaviors are virtually the same as the Dire Rat, but they often shed many of the usual "prey" animal behaviors of rats due to their much greater size and strength rendering them difficult for predators to bring down. As a result they can often be quite calm, and some humans even keep them as pets.
  • Increase to base defense-stats
  • Increase HP
  • Increase Beast Sense (reduced)

**(Immature) Rat-Man - Through some magical quirk of evolution, these rodents have gained primate features. Roughly the same size as Goblins, though tending towards much thinner and more agile bodies and often still running on all fours, Rat-Men are capable of using tools and weapons. They often gather into large hordes, and seek hidden places near other groups of creatures--such as humans--in order to steal food and valuables from them. Their sharp senses of smell and dextrous fingers make them proficient crafters and alchemists, though they also show addictive tendencies with their own products.
  • Increase to base power-stats.
  • Increase to Use Light Equipment (reduced)
  • Increase Beast Sense (reduced)

**(Immature) Mongrel - It is hard to define this creature as a rodent, a feline, or a canine, though it possesses traits of all three. Some speculate it is some kind of primitive, common ancestor to many carnivorous monsters today such as the Dire Wolf, but that raises the question of how it continues to exist? As a Beast-type monster in the truest sense, it has low levels of intelligence and is so aggressive it can barely form mating pairs with its own species. However, its strong jaws and claws are not to be underestimated, and it is much faster than it appears.
  • Increase to power-stats
  • Increase to speed-stats
  • Increase Beast Sense (reduced)

YOUR BODY IS BEGINNING TO CHANGE! You are undergoing Transformation! Based on your life experiences, your ability to survive, and the strength of your will, new paths have appeared! Choose carefully--there is no going back! WARNING. THIS PROCESS WILL LEAVE YOU TEMPORARILY VULNERABLE.

OPTIONS (* Indicates Suitability):
*(Adult) Slime - Slimes are amorphous creatures more similar to undeveloped egg yolks, yet they are able to move on their own and digest prey. Their bodies are highly resistant to physical damage and malleable.
  • Slight increase to all base stats
  • Increase HP
  • Increase Potential

*(Immature) Giant Slime - Giant Slimes have simply grown bigger, and their membranes have increased in strength so as to hold more mass without causing their bodies to split. Their digestive fluids also become stronger, but as a result of these advantages they require more food.
  • Increase Rank: Physical Damage Resistance
  • Increase HP (reduced)
  • Increase base defense-stats (reduced)
  • Very Slightly increase non-defensive base stats

*(Immature) Amorphous Slime - Slimes that have a preference for shape shifting sometimes develop a weakened membrane. Their defensive abilities stop increasing so quickly compared to normal slime types, but their shapeshifting and movement skills rise more quickly. These slimes avoid water, as it has a much stronger diluting effect on them.
  • Increase speed-stats (reduced)
  • Increase Rank: Limited Shapeshifting
  • Very Slightly increase non-defensive base stats

*(Immature) Metallic Slime - Absorbing nutrients from the ground underneath them, such as molecules of carbon and iron, has allowed this slime to form a metallic shell over its membrane. Unlike a Block Slime it has no tie to the Earth element, or any other magical properties. While its damage resistance rises much higher, its movement abilities suffer and its offensive strength doesn't increase much. This is just a slime that has become very, very good at what slimes usually do. This type is somewhat rare and humans often attempt to capture it for market.
  • Better Increase to defensive-stats
  • Increase Poison Resistance (reduced)
  • Increase Disease Resistance (reduced)

*(Immature) Giant Rat - Giant Rats are rodents of such unusually large size, many people don't believe they exist.

(Immature) Mongrel - It is hard to define this creature as a rodent, a feline, or a canine, though it possesses traits of all three.

--Fireball II--
A ball of fire conjured in a manner similar to a Mana Orb. At this rank it is stronger but costs more MP. It can inflict a burn on an enemy.
--Mana Slice I--
A blade of magical energy made by shaping a normal Mana Orb to have an edge. It uses more MP but does Slashing damage and is generally faster.
--Lesser Force I--
A conversion of Mana into physical force. It has a short range and is relatively weak at this rank, but allows one to pick up small objects without using a limb.
--Meditation I--
A skill that allows one to recover MP and Stamina. It can't be used in battle or while moving. Restoring Stamina is less efficient without proper rest and nourishment.

You gained a Unique Equipment: Woven Cane Body Wrap!
Wisps normally cannot use equipment. This item, normally a headband for a humanoid creature, has been wrapped around your entire body. If you can find a way to fasten it, you may be able to use it without an equipment skill. However, due to its unsuitable nature, its bonuses to your stats will not be as great, and in some cases may be negated entirely.

You used Magic Analysis III!
--Fireball II--
A ball of fire conjured in a manner similar to a Mana Orb. At this rank, the skill can not only burn an enemy, but produces a small explosion. It does not create an AoE effect, but may prove more effective in certain circumstances. At this rank its MP cost and attack power are proportionally increased. The Burn status effect causes damage-over-time, but is easily cured unlike most other status infliction by putting out the flame. The explosion effect is more likely to stun an opponent, or may cause discomfort to enemies sensitive to bright lights. The range of this spell is roughly equivalent to that of Mana Orb. It uses Fire element Mana, of course.
--Lesser Force I--
A translation of one's force of will through Mana, creating a telekinetic force that can move objects. At this rank the distance is short and its strength is rather low, but with intense focus one could use it to grapple or strike an opponent. Its MP cost is very low, and has a short recovery time even without recovery focused skills or items. Can be used by many magical creatures with both Energy type and Psionic types of Mana.
--Meditation I--
Through calming the mind and stimulating the soul, one clears their thoughts to form an unblocked conduit with ambient Mana in the environment. This increases the recovery speed of MP and Stamina, but it is highly vulnerable to disturbances and cannot be used in the midst of battle or other movements. Using this skill in and of itself does not consume any form of MP, Stamina, or other resources. The recovery of Stamina in particular is not as effective as normal sleep or rest, and is reduced when in need of food or water.

*(Adult) Pixie - A tiny humanoid Fey-type Monster. While somewhat intelligent, they lack empathy towards one another even compared to beasts like Goblins. Capable of flight and healing magic, but not physically strong or skilled enough to fight or use weapons well.
  • Slightly increase all base stats
  • Increase HP
  • Increase Potential

(Immature) Imp - The smallest and most pitiful of Demon-type monsters. Though relatively strong for their size, they are still mostly specialized in magic. However they lack the finesse and technique of other Demons, using plain and often brute-force style spells. Their cunning and absolute refusal to ever admit that they are lesser to any other being, however, can make them dastardly plotters.
  • Increase base power-stats
  • Increase Rank: Mana Orb
  • Increase Lesser Force (reduced)
  • Increase Demon Affinity (reduced)

(Immature) Sprite - A highly territorial, but otherwise relatively friendly type of creature. Quite similar to Pixies at first glance, they are much more empathetic and even altruistic than other types of Fey. Unless an enemy presents a threat to their homes and families, they often prefer to flee rather than fight, but if something enters their nesting area they are known to swarm much like wasps.
  • Increase Max MP
  • Increase Rank: Minor Heal
  • Increase Minor Heal All (reduced)
  • Increase Light Affinity (reduced)

(Immature) Hipixie - A larger, stronger, and more sophisticated variety of Pixie, very similar to the commonly known relationship between a Goblin and a Hobgoblin. Growing almost as large as a goblin themselves, their ability to fly becomes more difficult to use but their size now allows them to use many forms of lightweight tools and weapons. Considered to be some of the first True Fey, species of Fey-type monsters capable of forming societies and cultures rather than simply flitting about on any whim or reacting to any emotion that comes into their tiny heads.

**(Adult) Fanged Lizard - Fanged Lizards are a reptilian monster with potent venom. When injected via a bite, it acts as a neurotoxin to paralyze the prey. When exposed to the air, it becomes a highly acidic liquid. The lizard can spit at a distance. Lizards will sometimes roam in packs of family units, but only until the young can hunt on their own, compared to Dire Rats often found in the same ecosystem. They are normally various shades of gray, blue, and purple, darkening towards black with the lighter colors being speckled across their backs.

(Immature) Kobold - Small, reptilian creatures with odd primate characteristics like upright spines and grasping limbs. Quite similar to Goblins, often competing with them for the same territories and resources.
  • Slight increase to base speed-stats
  • Increase Use Light Equipment (reduced)
  • Gain Access to Job System: 0th Tier

(Immature) Pygmy Drake - Stunted, pesky cousins of greater drake species, this creature has a poisonous stinger on its tail rather than a breath weapon and glides more than it flies. Nonetheless it is somewhat clever, and mages sometimes keep it the way someone might keep a pet bird.
  • Very Slight Increase to all base stats

**(Immature) Lesserwurm - Related to dragons, but still a cold-blooded reptile, this creature burrows through the earth and fills the enclosed spaces around its prey with poisonous fumes. 𝕋𝕙𝕖 𝕆𝕥𝕙𝕖𝕣𝕨𝕠𝕣𝕝𝕕𝕝𝕪 ℂ𝕒𝕧𝕖𝕣𝕟

As everyone's heads buzzed, some with so much information that it became painful, there was a sudden...shift. It was as if thunder had rolled directly overhead, but there was no sound. It was as if a tremor passed through the earth, but there was no shaking nor shifting of rock. It was as if the darkness around them--for indeed, the moon was only beginning to go down outside--suddenly became part of the very stones themselves.

As if someone had layered their eyes over with tinted sunglasses, everyone would suddenly see and feel this...oppressive...new aura coating the ground around them. Gray, granite-colored stone, brown dirt...now it seemed to carry a darker tinge, blacks and violets somewhere deeper than the surface.

Jason suddenly felt extremely compelled to revisit his cave.

Crispy's head jerked around, his eyes wide as if he had sensed something that demanded his utmost attention. He looked in the direction of the pool, past the bonfire, and for some reason he felt drawn to go there even though he knew he shouldn't. He bit his lip. It took sheer force of will to turn back to the other goblins, who were currently working on turning their torches and what was left of the fire from the entranceway into a campfire they could use as their new base of operations. They, too, seemed to feel the shift in the air, and dropped what they were doing to look around in terror.

"Wut just happen!?" came their cries, until Crispy shut them all up with the bright burst of light from a fireball in his hand. He clenched his fist to dissipate it once he had silenced them.

"Somethin' big, dat's wat. And I gots a feelin'...that Rattleskull fucked up." He growled, looking in the direction he had last seen the Boss. Then he turned and pointed. The best equipped of Orchid's shieldboys, his two remaining minions, and the male youngling torchbearer.

"Youse all, wif me! We're gonna go check somethin' out!"

Meanwhile, somewhere near the pool, a pixie hunched over a gory meal of some poor creature. But this pixie was missing one of its limbs, and its body bore a number of wounds that it should not have been able to survive. With sightless eyes the creature suddenly looked around it. It felt...stronger. And also...hungrier...

In a few places around the cave, the soil began to shiver. Somewhere, something sharp and slender and colored a sickly, yellowish-white, poked through the dirt...followed by several more structures just like it, revealing themselves to have joints, and a base made of several more plate-like structures of the same material...
Ash’s Party and Orchid

As the visions from the dream began to grow foggy, fading further away with each grain of her focus that returned to her body like sand in the hourglass, Ash returned to the world of sensation. But she found herself in a situation that seemed familiar, yet so distant. Though it had only been a little over a week, what a long and eventful period that had turned out to be. Much like when she had hatched from her egg, she now felt herself constrained--much more tightly--by the gray, leathery shell around her. Yet there was something new about this situation as well. From her shoulder blades, she could feel the twitch and cramp of new muscles, and the strain of what seemed to be like skin stretched thin, like trying to spread one's fingers too far apart. Speaking of cramps, her neck as well felt constrained. Like sleeping on one's pillow at the wrong angle, the muscles protested any movement, yet the shell around her was even more restricting.

She had grown so used to having a tail by this point, it took longer to notice the changes here compared to the rest of her body. Yet that too was no longer the same--it no longer seemed to drag the ground by default, and rather it felt much more comfortable to curl it upward over her back. And once again the shell was in the way--but at the tip of her tail, she could feel what seemed like an extra claw, and an odd muscle that reminded her of the fangs in her throat. Which, now that she ran her tongue along her teeth, seemed to have shrunk significantly.

But outside the shell, she could hear something...something very LOUD...

TRANSFORMATION COMPLETE!
Fanged Lizard > (Immature) Pygmy Drake
You have Transformed!
All Base Stats Slightly Increased!
You Max MP has Increased!
You have not reached your full Potential. The Skill Mana Orb is reduced to (0.5).
You have not reached your full Potential. The Skill Dragon Affinity is reduced to (0.25). Increase it by deepening your understanding of Dragons.
You have gained the Skill: Lesser Flight I!
This Skill allows for flight over short distances at a "walking" pace. Carrying objects is difficult. This skill relies on one's physical ability to fly with Wings or some other form of propulsion.
Your Skill: Poison Spit (1.9) has been Converted to Poison Spray (1.9)!
This Skill sprays an acidic venom, but despite using the term "spray" it is more like a concentrated stream, compared to spitting water from one's mouth. It has no AoE effect. Its damage, range, and other attributes are virtually identical to Poison Spit, but it is launched from your stinger.
Your Skill: Stun Fang (2.0) has been Converted to Stun Stinger (2.0)!
This Skill releases a paralyzing toxin into the opponent's body through a stinger on one's tail or other body part. Its damage, chance to inflict status, and other attributes are virtually identical to Stun Fang.

As Orchid raised her torch, causing the firelight to cast a long shadow from her form and create an outline around her body from the lower viewpoint of poor Colchain, the Lizard stepped back a pace. He still hissed and thrashed his tail, but in response Orchid let out a savage scream.

Colchain had been caught by Goblins once, and no one had fed him enough to convince him to stay around for this--and Ash wasn't going to be putting her foot on his neck in the next few moments either. In the face of a much larger predator, relatively bereft of allies, and without much motivation pushing him to remain loyal, Colchain acted on his instincts.

Whirling on all four feet, the Fanged Lizard headed for the hills. Or the rocks. Either way, he was going, going, gone.

Dominated Fanged Lizard: Colchain has left your party!

Ardur, Digbie, Mourningstar, Rain, Danny VS Rattleskull

1st Turn:
As Rain rushed up Rattleskull's leg, he was already trying to shove the Healing Herb into his mouth. His club-arm tried to swipe her off, but he barely missed his own kneecap in the process while failing to catch the fast-moving lizard. Just as he nearly choked himself on the Herb she snapped at his forearm, grazing the furry flesh with her fangs. He drew his free hand back, furiously chewing, but before he could strike her she let loose a cloud of Poison Breath right into his face--he couldn't help but take a nose-full of it as he swallowed the Herb. All over his body his wounds began to rapidly heal, but the Herb couldn't fix status effects by itself and the wounds he was still receiving still stung. As his eyes teared up the goblin boss shook his head with a wailing scream, his nose running and burning thanks to Rain's venom.

Rain once again felt the warm, comforting tingle of a healing spell being used on her, and as Ardur zoomed past the System informed the Fanged Lizard that her HP was once again full. Rattleskull screamed again, this time because the new Wisp in the group had darted down and apparently jabbed him in the eye with its invisible, telekinetic force. Without a way to see the attack coming the big monster couldn't do much to stop it, but it also didn't do much real damage--however, for the moment the enemy was half-blind and distracted!

Jason, Oberon, Asura, Asteria, Ed, Momma Slime VS Brawny Goblin, Bitchy Goblin, Brawny Minion

Upon grabbing the female Goblin and wrestling her down alongside Mother Rat, Jason's psychic scream certainly caused the greenskin to recoil in fear and turn towards him with shocked eyes. At the same moment the rat matriarch tore the [Badly-Made Stone Spear] from the girl's grasp, and then Jason's Rock Spire pierced her from behind. She gurgled and grasped at the rocky blade coming out of her stomach, before vomiting blood down her chest as her eyes rolled back into her head, and her body went limp.

With this the last of the Brawny Team had been slaughtered. In the brief respite, several members of the group took the opportunity to get their bearings or process new information. In Oberon's case, he felt a dull throbbing in his head, but not anything quite at the level of blinding pain from before.

As Asteria used her Analysis Skill on Momma Slime, the big blue blob turned its attention with a slight shift of its body mass towards the Dire Rat speaking to it. While her membrane vibrated curiously, the slime crunched on some vaguely recognizable bit of the Brawny Goblin's anatomy, which soon began dissolving into a bloody mess inside the ocean-tinted mass.

You used Monster Analysis I! You are somewhat familiar with this Monster.
---Adult Slime---
Slimes are amorphous creatures more similar to undeveloped egg yolks, yet they are able to move on their own and digest prey. Their bodies are highly resistant to physical damage and malleable. You know that this one is called Momma Slime. She seems stronger than the average Slime.
---Analysis Complete---
System:Asteria

Asura and Ed dashed off in the direction of the battle with Rattleskull, with Momma Slime soon following behind. Shortly after Jason and Asteria followed, as did Oberon, and the rolling slimes soon began to outpace the others as the two rats decided to try and be sneaky in their assault...

Ardur, Digbie, Mourningstar, Rain, Danny, Asura, Ed, Asteria, Momma Slime, Jason, Oberon VS Rattleskull

2nd Turn:
As Ardur passed by Digbie, he cast his Minor Heal II on the goblin as well. Like Rain, the System told Digbie that his HP was back to full, and though his teeth didn't grow back, the soft cartilage of his nose snapped back into place painfully before it finished healing. However, the Pixie couldn't cast two spells at once, so while he felt his magic being drained to heal Digbie he would be forced to wait for a moment. While this was going on the Goblin re-equipped the Stone Spike he had taken as his signature weapon, and headed back into the fray.

As Rain let loose another Poison Glob, Rattleskull scrambled to his feet and shoved her off. She didn't have as far to fall this time and was able to land safely, as her Glob burned the boss's hide.

"ARRRRGH! WHY NONE OF YOUSE DIE!?" He tried to swing his club at her, but thanks to Danny's earlier distraction one eye still couldn't see, and as a result his strike was off. The heavy stone blade struck just inches away from Rain, sending up a shower of rock chips and dust, but did her no harm.

At this moment, Asura, Momma Slime, and Jason could be seen rapidly rolling up to the party--but where were the three Dire Rats?

3rd Turn:
Ardur completed his Shield spell on Digbie, then rushed off to find more dirt to throw in the boss's face. The smaller Goblin charged his possible-father-figure and swung with all his might, as his weapon erupted with golden light. Rattleskull tried to block it with his own weapon--and in an almost-explosion, wood splinters and cracked bits of rock flew! Both weapons shattered from the force of impact, leaving both Goblins unarmed! Rattleskull's club had suffered enough damage to significantly weaken it, while Digbie's had never really been "crafted" to stand up to these kinds of impacts, and while it was very hard, that same hardness also made it brittle.

Jason's War Cry rang out, immediately drawing the boss's attention--just in time for Asura to slam into him at full speed! The breath was driven from Rattleskull's lungs as he was pushed backwards, the red ball spinning into his midsection for several seconds. The boss's heels dug furrows into the earth before Asura bounced off back onto the ground. Rattleskull snarled--then he suddenly clutched his stomach, and threw up a stomach-load of bile. Some of the group had probably seen this effect a few times by now on monsters that had been Poisoned--despite his resistances, Rain had been bombarding him with it all this time, and the Healing Herb hadn't helped with this particular form of damage.

4th Turn:
Having taken longer to arrive due to their stealthy approach, Asteria and Ed both leaped out of the shadows. Ed activated his Rabid Fit, and Asteria joined Rain. The Lizard had returned to her sheer-hate driven attack on Rattleskull's leg, and with Asteria helping her while Ed went berserk on the other one, they managed to effectively hamstring the behemoth goblinoid, drawing yet another scream from him as he went down on both knees. He reached back, however, flailing wildly with both arms and managing to knock the smaller creatures away--however, it was clear he was getting worn down at this point. The three monsters took damage, but what would have likely been a near-killing blow to just one of them proved only moderately damaged split among the three.

Jason retrieved his Source Crystal, for some reason deciding that the very midst of battle was a good time to use it--then again, maybe he had a point, as Rattleskull heaved exhausted breaths...

You used a Source Crystal!
---Target:Rattleskull---
This is Rattleskull. He is a male Bugbear. He is Level 10 and roughly 4 years old. Bugbears are an evolved form of the Goblin. Less suited to the natural cleverness or deftness of their smaller cousins, they more than make up for this with their toughness and strength. Their thick fur allows them to venture out from their caves or huts into many different environments. Their strength allows them to use larger types of equipment, and they'll often bully other goblins around as the leaders of small tribes. They can almost never work together with other Bugbears, as the species is highly aggressive and competitive. Rattleskull possesses the following Skills: Smash II, Poison Resistance II, Use Light Equipment, Use Medium Equipment, Crafting II, Intimidate I, Stronger I, Harder I, Magic Resistance I. Rattleskull is developing the following skills: Blunt Resistance I, Rabid Fit I, Slash Resistance I, Pierce Resistance I, Slash I, Skewer I, Fire Resistance I, Alert I, Keen Sight I, Keen Smell I, Iron Gullet I. Rattleskull has the following items equipped: Wooden Armor (Bad Quality), Woven Cane Headband (Average Quality), Straw Sandles (Average Quality), Vine Belt (Bad Quality). Rattleskull's HP is Low. Rattleskull has a naturally low amount of MP. Rattleskull is at Full MP. Rattleskull has a high amount of Stamina. Rattleskull has used up roughly half his Stamina. Rattleskull is currently Poisoned.
System:Jason

At this point the Source Crystal ran out of Charge, although it would automatically consume 1 of Jason's Mana Crystals from his inventory if he had any left. His head was beginning to throb slightly, and it seemed he had lost track of time. While he had been staring at the Source Crystal, Ardur had done another fly-by to throw dirt in Rattleskull's face, and the Bugbear covered his eyes to keep from being blinded--in the process, of course, blinding himself. Just in time for Momma Slime to lunge forward--she had too much mass to pull off the same kind of maneuver as Asura, but she went for the typical Slime-standby of just walloping the foe with her entire body mass. Rattleskull was actually knocked to the ground by this larger monster's blow, and his roars suddenly became more like...sobs?

5th Turn:
"N-not fair! Dun unnerstan!! How!? Why all youse gangin' up, you alls differ'nt!" the boss wailed, desperately trying to get back on his feet and wobbling in the process. "YOU NOT ACT LIKE MOBS S'POSED TO ACT! WHAT ARE YOUSE?!"

"KNOW DESPAIR RATTLESKULL, FOR YOUR END HAS COME!!!" As Jason shouted, Rattleskull turned towards him and immediately charged, pulling back both hands and grasping them together like a hammer of flesh and bone.

If Jason had been using the Source Crystal, it would have told him that one of Rattleskull's developing skills had just ticked over--Rabid Fit. The Bugbear began to froth at the mouth as his eyes turned bloodshot and his muscles bulged even more than usual...and then on top of that--!

"SMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASH!"

The red, crackling energy of this Rank II attack was now an even darker, bloodier red thanks to the damage boost from the new skill. The blow came down towards Jason--even with his increased defense, he suddenly felt a spike of instinct in his head screaming "Danger!" at him!

Then Oberon cast Shield III.

Shield III was not a barrier. The spell increased the target's natural defenses. So on a Pixie, which was a physically frail creature, it actually wasn't all that useful in the grand scheme of things, especially if the opponent was not only stronger, but had better equipment. However, casting it on a monster with an already much higher defense than usual...

Rattleskull's fists came down right on top of Jason's pointy hat. As his body was compressed hard enough to even crack the stone underneath him, creating a small crater around the Slime Mage, the Shield gave way, and Jason felt a powerful pressure bearing down on him--then Rattleskull's blow bled out its momentum, and his fists were bounced back from that green, gelatinous body. It even made a distinctive, almost comical sound.

"ROCK SPIRE-- EARTH'S WRATH!!!!"

As Jason added that little flourish to his spell, he suddenly felt an extra surge of magic somewhere within him. The bright glow that opened up beneath Rattleskull's feat seemed bigger, stronger--and now, it actually formed a shape. A geometrically perfect circle? Two rings, in fact, the larger one spinning clock-wise while the smaller spun in the opposite direction. And at the center of this circle was a rapidly panicking Bugbear.

"YOUSE--YOUSE IS ALL--"

Even the rocky spike seemed to have more oomph for some reason, actually leaving the ground and shooting upward this time--

"--MONSTEEEEEEEEERRRRRSSS--HURGHLF--"

Then Rattleskull died. His body, with a stoney spike sticking diagonally through his navel and coming out between his shoulder blades, slumped to the ground.

Other Goblins

With the Wispmother dealt with, Crispy ordered the other Goblins to pull back for the moment. They had captured a great deal of territory, and could now safely camp so long as they put up a guard to make sure none of these odd monsters came into their area. It would be difficult to convince Rattleskull to pull back, but at this point it was almost dawn, and all of their warriors were sure to be exhausted.

"Youse all stay here, maybe one of two of yas go get the fire back at the entrance stoked up again and try to move it closer to here!" Crispy ordered. "I'm gonna give da signal for da udda guys to come back! Once we regroup, if Rattleskull don't show up we'll have to go get him!"

After a few moments of preparation, Crispy fired a Fireball--larger than what he usually managed--straight up into the air. It was visible for quite some distance across the cave, and when it rose high enough it reached its limit and exploded, producing a short lived, but effective flare signal...

Jason's Cave

Inside the enormous green gem, sticking out of the ground like the horn of some grand beast, a red light had been growing. This object, which now could be identified as a much larger, perhaps much more powerful Source Crystal--an object connected to the root of this new, strange world--now bore a red sphere in its deepest depths. A few minutes ago, another smaller, red sphere--almost like those Wisps out there in the bigger cave--had flicked, coming up from the base of the Source Crystal like a molecule of water being drawn up the roots of a tree. And now, another red flicker appeared. But it was much larger, not a mere molecule but an entire drop. Blood red and shivering, as if filled with terror, it too joined the mass in the crystal's depths.

With a sound like water freezing over, the red light began to solidify...
