Happy Valentine's Day!

Did you know that Valentine's Day and the practice of exchanging love letters began in ancient Rome? St Valentine, then just Valentine I guess, a priest, defied the emperor's orders to cease all marriages, because Valentine believed in the power of LOVE. See the Emperor needed more men for his wars, and he figured he'd have better luck recruiting grunts to march off to Germania if they weren't getting squeezed at home. Valentine would take youngsters out into the woods and perform marriages in secret, or mostly-secret I suppose, because around the year 270AD he was caught.

He was sentenced to beheading.

While in jail, awaiting his beheading, Valentine, shall we say, befriended the jailer's daughter. The night before his decapitation he slipped her a last testament of his love and signed it "From your Valentine." The jailer caught wind of what was going on, and Valentine was beaten to death before his head could be taken off.

NOW YOU KNOW -- and KNOWING is half the battle! Happy bludgeoning/decapitation day everyone.

So what I'm hearing is he was a dangerous subversive who was endangering the peace and good order of the Empire.

Allegedly at least, the origins of the day appear a little murky because there are three St Valentines (all martyrs) whos deaths are associated with Feb 14 and the festival of Lupercalia.

Atoms aren't defined solely by humans, but also by their properties. Ethnicities and races are abstract, not tangible, which makes defining them in objective manners virtually impossible. But go ahead and ignore my points whenever it suits you.

Exactly. Mainstream physical anthropology does not recognize race as a meaningful category. Ethnicity is largely a social construct. But I somehow doubt a bunch of angsty racists are going to let that color their misconceptions.

Going back to the Mars thing:

Taking the thought experiment in the spirit in which it was intended. I do think that an ethnostate anywhere would be immoral. Arbitrarily discriminating against people is an immoral act at an individual level and by extension a state which is constituted explicitly around the idea of such discrimination is also immoral regardless of where it happens to be located.

It maybe gets a little murkier when you talk about freedom of association, like religious congregations and what have you but its less problematic because you generally don't derive your legal rights from membership in some voluntary subgroup.

The contents of the word atom are defined solely by humans. Ethnic variations are indeed very tangible. I only ignore what is in no way a point. If you lack the ability to make a point that is your problem.

The problem with race and ethnicity is that they're vague synonyms of categories defined solely by people, specifically people that can change views about which categories actually exist. If an oligodactyl pygmy with albinism and methemoglobinemia is born, they could be categorized as the first smurf to ever exist, and we'd have yet another bit of data to waste resources on when we have a census or similar process.

Meanwhile, the traits of atoms have pretty much been the same for over a dozen billion years, regardless of what humans thought about them.

So? Taxonomy is a fluid concept as constant changes appear, just as we add to our knowledge in other fields. This is again a bit of a "gee ya fucking think" moment.

If it comes to anything concerning race or ethnicity, I have to say I do not know. Global Warming was a fact before the polarization of the country/world, but I did not delve into anthropology and I'd be a fool to think that there is no chance they do not only accept facts that adhere to their world view.

For example, I was talking to my friend about some very odd people who were complaining that the new game Kingdom Come: Deliverance doesn't have enough black representation when the game is set in early 15th century Bohemia, and the entire thing occurs within a 9 mile radius. As a historian I knew what they were arguing was, to put it bluntly, horseshit. But when I googled it as a curiosity, all I found were biased articles on both sides that brought little evidence, and I realize you can't even look up medieval demographics anymore without it having a political agenda.

Pretty much, unless I read an article that tells me there is/isn't a reason to think of ethnicity or race as a social construct that provides evidence and sources I can believe (or just takes some courses myself), I'll just give an honest "no idea." Either way, even if it wasn't a social construct that doesn't mean it would justify the mistreatment of others.

This one happened maybe 30 minutes from where I live.

Now for the NRA to blame the thing entirely on mental illness and yet refuse to translate that into funding for mental health services

@catchamber it gives small and unimpressive people a way to feel better about themselves by imaging themselves as members of an in group. Also serves as a basis for some to oppress others. I guess that is a type of utility?
