Hello, and welcome to Naruto: Black Sun, a new Naruto roleplay hosted by yours truly, Odin. After countless RP's in the Naruto roleplaying community on Roleplayerguild, it is time for yet another installment of the Naruto universe in roleplay format that sticks to the roots of the Naruto universe.

The aim is to recreate Naruto's appealing mood. The life of a shinobi isn't about roses, and it certainly isn't about all things good in life. Instead, it is about sacrifice. Because at it's core, that is what being a shinobi means - sacrifice. Sacrificing your 'normal' life to become a warrior and fight in the name of the village, to protect it's interest and keep the village safe.

And, if you just so happen to enjoy being a weapon, a tool, a cog in the machine of warfare... then all the better, because it means you can enjoy your own sacrifice.

This is reflected in the premise of the roleplay - it follows canon events entirely and then skips ahead several years - one hundred and fifty years to be precise - which gives us a convenient method of getting rid of otherwise problematic canon elements. Naruto and Sasuke existed, but obviously are no longer around. Neither are their offspring. Anything after that? Well, it's vanished into obscurity. As they say, the rest is history, and in this roleplay, we can take that very literally. But Odin, you say, how does that even represent the mood of Naruto?

Simply put, the world hasn't continued as Naruto and Sasuke no doubt intended. Yes, the curse of hatred is gone, and that is very nice, but hatred itself still exists. The Five Great Shinobi Villages didn't exactly keep getting along. By pretending everyone gets along, the problems only worsen, and there is a moment where all those pent up frustrations.. get released. They pop. And that explosion will be bigger than any previous war.

Interested in seeing how your destiny can be smithed within the confines of this new age? Continue reading.

Keywords: dark, grim, warfare, Naruto: part 1.

Nations are like a match. They are lit, burn in a great intense flame, and continue burning, until the fuel is exhausted and they slowly, very slowly, fade away and ultimately extinguish. The only proof of their existence then, the ruins of their people if you will, is the smoke. But even the smoke slowly fades away. And then, nothing remains.

After Naruto and Sasuke unified the Shinobi nations and the great war was won, there was a brief sliver of hope. Hope that the countries would remain unified and at peace. But as time went on, the smaller shinobi nations went unrewarded for their sacrifices during this war - and their contributions to the war effort. If anything, it seemed that the great shinobi nations thought that these smaller villages should consider themselves lucky to have been able to contribute, should consider themselves lucky for continuing to exist.

There was no attention paid to their suffering, and Amegakure was hit perhaps the worst of all. With Nagato dead, Pain left without a host, and Konan sacrificing herself in an attempt to rip the head off the snake that was the Akatsuki, the village was left without leadership. A power vacuum had formed and with the looming threat of war with other-worldy forces, this put Amegakure in a position that they could not recover from. It was, perhaps, only slightly ironic that the village that had been formed specifically because of their lack of power to fight back against the great shinobi nations would now suffer once again because none of the Kage's paid any attention to their struggles once again.

The next one hundred and fifty years would be spent filling the vacuum, with warlords, mercenaries and demagogues taking up the mantle of being the leader of Amegakure. Internal struggle would dictate the political sphere in Amegakure for the next hundred years as the world changed around them.

Amegakure lost it's edge, it's industrial capabilities beginning to stagnate under the mounting pressure of the growing strife within the nations, with the nations surrounding them catching up. It took a hundred years for a leader to arrive who could take charge, and enforce a more rigid political system of elections for leadership positions within Amegakure rather than cutthroat politics.

Fifty years later, Amegakure is a shell of it's former self, but still stands strong, alone, in a world that is no longer the peaceful cooperative environment Naruto and Sasuke had intended, but rather, had returned to it's roots.

One hundred fifty years after the Fourth Great Shinobi War ended, a new generation of genin has graduated. Are they ready to take destiny into their hands? Can they do what it takes to become a shinobi of remarkable talent? One hundred fifty yers after the Fourth Great Shinobi War ended, a new threat looms on the horizon. A threat that goes unnoticed by the great shinobi nations, a threat that requires the full attention of the village.

In order to be accepted to anything in life, there are typically some sort of requirements before you can be admitted to whatever you're requesting to be part of. This includes the shinobi academy in Amegakure no Sato -- and the roleplay too. Below are some stipulations in what we are looking for in a character:

  • Genin
  • Born in, or grown up in Amegakure
  • Resides in Amegakure and has resided there for the duration of his/her enrollment in the academy
  • Fresh graduate, between ages 13-14 (timeskip will occur later, so no worry - you're not stuck playing a baby forever)
  • Decent backstory, not an over the top edgy sobstory
  • Motivations for things that aren't 'standard' make sense and withstand criticism (ergo, he has a sharingan because his dad is Uchiha really doesn't make sense as you are in Amegakure)
  • Character is psychologically fit (enough) -- or can pretend to be
  • Character is capable of performing at an average level in multiple fields of shinobi arts (no one trick ponies)
  • Operates at a level one would expect from a genin (slightly above/below is fine)
  • Either shares a theme or a backstory with the rest of their team (added later on)

Somewhat interested, though I do have a question.

While I like the setting and premise of Naruto, I am of the opinion that the show sort of swallowed itself by crossing over the Godzilla Threshold and abruptly turned into Dragon Ball Z crossed with Evangelion, what with the giant laser beams and piloted spirit mecha and the Mind Control Moon Superweapon.

(Whoops, spoilers everyone, oh no.)

Would this RP have any of that, or would we be focusing more on the actual roots of the setting?

@Terminal We'll be tackling a organization akin to the Akatsuki but slightly worse and while the opponents might veer into shinobi-godhood territory I like to think they're somewhat grounded in a more smart, rational approach to existing Naruto ideas and techniques -- as opposed to 'hehe i'm a moongoddess time to fuck the world up' type things.

The moon mind control thing will definitely be something that is integrated however since it's a canon event -- but we're like.. 150 years past that when the RP starts, so it's to our characters what the battle of Vienna is to us.

I'd say writing 3+ paragraphs would be enough for an average post. I know I can be a bit wordy and so I'm probably gonna exceed that but I also am well aware that the Naruto roleplay scene is usually a bit more short format. Either is fine for me, so long as people remain active and driven.

Post-frequency wise I wanna adopt a more balanced advanced level approach. One post a week at a minimum, and more if you feel like it and are able to.

What is the tech level you will be using? Are Ninjas on the internet, or is it safe to say things have stopped at Boruto?

It's somewhere between Naruto Shippuden and Boruto, but like, that says literally nothing since apparently we had long range communications and guns (yes guns) in Naruto part 1 already, so..

This looks like some thought and care was put into the lore, and I do quite like the aesthetic and mood of the little bits of Naruto I've seen (plus, ninjas are cool!), but I have basically no clue what happened within Naruto after the Gaara vs. Lee fight, which I think is quite early in the lore? Is there a lot I HAVE to catch up on to write up to par?

No, I have a timeline for canon + our universe in handy image format. I don't really want to ruin the thread, but you can basically find it if you look at my threads/posts so I'll just post it here;

0 M.E. is the year Konohagakure was founded, anything before that was Sengoku Jidai/Mythical era of Kaguya Otsutsuki, and the Sage of the Six Paths/Indra & Asura. If you really want to read more about this universe we have here, and get started on thinking of a character, read here. Otherwise I expect the thread to be up in like, 3 days?

That's super handy, thank you! I looked over the sheet and I love how much stuff you can do with it, but I also realized I need some serious freshing up with the jutsus and elements and such (I remember way too little to confidently fill it out as of now). I know some GMs enjoy working on stuff with their players, while others find it bothersome or simply require their players to be independently knowledgeable; are you okay with me PM'ing you potential questions and ideas for a sheet?

@Sunbather Yeah no problem at all - the Narutopedia helps a lot because I honestly don't memorize all the jutsu anyway. Anything you can't find the answer to (or just need more clarification on) feel free to PM me for.

Well, Kishimoto did directly state that there was a giant mountain-busting fox in Chapter 1 of the manga.....

Well, Kishimoto did directly state that there was a giant mountain-busting fox in Chapter 1 of the manga.....

Sure, of course, naturally.

But there is a difference between a Ninja and a Godlike Entity that throws multiple supernovas as their standard attack.

At the beginning of the story, the background threat of the tailed beasts is the actual Godzilla threshold I was referring to, the sort of cataclysmic force that signifies the ultimate eventual threat of the story. The core appeal of the story though is young ninjas in training going on adventures, getting into ninja battles, and showing off flashy/mystical abilities. That core appeal basically remained the same, at least to begin with, shortly after the time-skip.

At some point, that core appeal was traded away in an escalating series of power-plays until the story is no longer about Ninjas doing Ninja stuff and becomes more about people screaming at each other while they charge up massive energy rays (hence the comparison to Dragon Ball Z). In the later parts of the story, even the mountain-destroying demon fox becomes comparatively trivialized.

Which was what my question was getting at. Some people may prefer the direction the later parts of the story took, I personally prefer the parts of the story back when it was still about tricksy Ninja with more subdued mystic arts getting into fights and out-scheming one another, and I was asking which direction this particular story would take.

I do agree with that but one major thing about Kishimoto is that despite all of the gratuitous power levels in the story, most of the major victories in the manga are due to using those biggatons intelligently like a ninja rather than going into DBZ-esque beam struggles.

Say for example, the fight between Naruto and Pain. The fight is ultimately won, not by Naruto going into Nine-Tails Mode, but by using his intelligence, massive usage of shadow clones, abusing Pain's 5 second timer for Shinra Tensei to activate and just pure effort instead of pure power.

Sasuke vs Deidara. One of the most tactical fights in the series that ends in Deidara failing to kill Sasuke after doing a extremely accurate cosplay of Little-Boy.

There are many more examples of fights in the manga, especially post-timeskip, where intelligence comes into play more often rather than power. Kakashi v Pain. Kakashi v Obito. Minato v Obito. Kakazu v Naruto. And many more that I don't remember.

Naruto veers into this nonsensical power-level territory from time to time but it never relies on it completely, even with the ridiculous power creep in the Shipudden era of the manga. Though I do agree with you on the point that the power creep takes away from the overall core premise of the franchise, I disagree with the fact that Naruto went brawn over brains throughout the manga.

Anyway, on the topic of the RP, @Odin, I'll be stating my interest for now but depending on how RL stuff goes, it will affect whether or not I can join this RP.

Yeah, this thread isn't really meant to discuss Naruto (I'm more than happy to, but just not here) so I'll ask you guys kindly to uhhhhh: not do that.

To answer the question: we're gonna have a little bit of both. We're starting as genin -- but there are definitely some big baddies out there that wanna destroy the world, reshape it in their image, or just have a really fucked up idea of righteousness.

I've been stalking around the Advanced RP section to find something I want to play and this sounds like it.

I do have a question though. Are we doing the Genin Exam or are we already Genin? The answer will cement me wanting to join up since I refuse to start another Naruto RP that we attempt to due the Genin Exam and 50 IC posts later everyone is bored and the RP dies.

@Odin Are we going to be organized into Genin teams as well, or does Amegakure have its own system in place for training Genin?
