The world is a safe place.

What, you thought I'd say dangerous? Hell no, not when we've got heroes running around.

I mean sure, there are monsters and demons and natural disasters and heart disease, but I'm sure it's like that in every world! What I mean is we never face any apocalyptic threats. Prophecies of the end times, visions of demonic conquest, they're all thwarted by our beautiful and powerful Goddess, thanks to her
Heroic Selection Odyssey.

Actually the HSO is coming up pretty soon, ain't it? Yeah, every hundred years or so she emerges from Agartha to awaken that heroic spark in people and get them on board to travel the world and help their fellow man. They say the best of these fledgling heroes goes on to stop whatever the next world-ending disaster would have been. Buuut the way I see it, the reason everyone aims for the top spot isn't for the chance to get their name in the history books. Nah, it's gotta be pure greed.

I mean, getting rich from adventuring? Having kingdoms indebted to you? Building your own harem of followers?
Getting your deepest wish granted by the Goddess herself?

Who wouldn't fight for that?

And the protagonist of this story, this century's greatest hero? Why, it's...

"Me!""Me!""Me!"
"Me!"

What is this, you ask? Hey, good question, I wanna know too! What I think it is, is a casual fantasy RP with a low pressure OOC atmosphere, with several players taking the role of "heroes" of the land and all writing with the mindset that their character is the protagonist of the story.

Explore a shared setting where anyone can contribute to the world map and lore, develop evolving power paths for your character, and hopefully have fun writing a hero who gives in to their greed in order to become the best among their peers! It's my intent to also explore other facets of a hero's personality besides their drive to do good, so all characters will have a secondary, personal goal to chase besides becoming the legendary hero of their generation.

Collect Hero Points (HP)
The Heroic Selection Odyssey is part life's calling and part competition. Clearing dungeons, defeating monsters, helping villagers with quests, swaying the hearts of the people to your side, and doing all kinds of good deeds will earn your character HP - Hero Points! HP is a rough measure of how strong (or more accurately, how heroic) a hero is. At the end of the HSO, the character who has the highest HP value becomes the next Legendary Hero! Taking the top spot is also a sure fire way to fulfill a character's greatest desires, so aim high! ★

Player vs Player vs Environment
Playing against the GM is not the only way to gain HP. Heroes will be able to see how much HP other heroes have, which they can use to decide to avoid, team up with, or even challenge another character. To promote the most growth of the powers of her heroes, the Goddess incentivizes duels between them. Characters can steal HP from each other by defeating each other in combat, games, races, quests, or any other type of competition one can think of. Don't worry, hitting zero HP does not take anyone out of the running!

Rival System
Because what is a protagonist without their rival, after all? Especially useful if a character is falling behind, declaring a rival and outperforming them nets bonus HP! The farther behind a hero is, the more bonus HP they get for beating their rival! Rivals do not have to be mutually exclusive, and they can change over time. If you're too shy to pick a fellow player as your rival, then just ask me for one! I will create an NPC rival for you to fight and bond with! Until their usefulness has passed and I cruelly throw them into the void of character development!

The vibe of this RP is intended to lean more towards lighthearted action and a fun, somewhat goofy atmosphere that follows characters with big personalities while they get stronger and stronger. However, anyone that knows me also knows that I love whump and angst, so no promises that it won't start veering into that direction if character arcs warrant it. In particular, heroes do not have to be typically heroic. A "hero" is anyone whose power was awakened by the Goddess - a scumbag of a person can become a hero, and they can commit villainous acts and chase dark desires, but only doing good deeds will give them HP... unless they end up challenging other heroes to try and steal HP from them instead.

✽ 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙂𝙤𝙙𝙙𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙂𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙙 𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙤𝙚𝙨. 𝘼𝙬𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙣 𝙖𝙩 𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙘𝙖𝙡𝙡.

Hero Creation Guide

Start with your power concept! Heroes awaken with one power.
Choose one starting power that you will have the most fun with, ideally one that doesn't overlap too much with another character's starting power. Starting powers level up with the accumulation of HP, gaining additional applications. For example, the ability to control flame might level up to include fire-based flight, or pave the way for obtaining other elemental abilities.

A character's powers don't necessarily have to reflect their past or personality, especially once they start evolving. As powers grow they might start overlapping with others, but its alright if power paths are similar, so don't worry about planning a path ahead of time. Also, at this time there is no ban on potential powers. Feel free to choose things like necromancy, time control, mental manipulation, etc. if you have a solid concept - it will start weak, and we'll work together to make it fair for everyone. Also feel free to get weird with it if you come up with something fun.

Every character's power comes from their Heroic Awakening. World magic and racial traits are very minor. Being connected to the bloodline of past heroes can give a character other weak inherited traits, but only insofar that they might be a little tougher, swim a little faster, or be a little more tolerant of the cold than your average joe, but they hardly give anyone an edge over fellow heroes.

Oh, I almost forgot! Make sure to give your power a proper name/title!

Give in to your greed! Choose your character's desire.
Heroic Awakening does not just result the emergence of powers in people. Without exception, every Heroic Awakening also sparks an intense desire deep in each new hero's heart. It can be noble or wicked, specific or vague, something they've already been working towards, something they never knew they wanted before, or something they've tried to deny about themselves. Whatever their desire is, it now sits at the front of their thoughts. It would help to choose something they cannot easily obtain. Becoming the top hero in the HSO might just be the quickest way to get it, so make sure your character has at least some drive to compete. That is kinda the whole point of the game, after all. Selfishly go for the goal!

Now let's see what we're working with physically. Age, gender, race...
Heroic Awakening is triggered by the Goddess' ascent to the world above, and only then. This means that when it happens, heroes awaken at whatever stage of life they're in, young or old. There isn't any age minimum or maximum besides being a little reasonable when creating your character. However, I'm not against pitches for Super Infant or Great Battle Granny. The Goddess also does not discriminate based on gender, sex, or race. The jury's still out on whether or not she direct chooses who awakens in the first place or if it's completely random, given there are so many who awaken during each Odyssey cycle.

This is a fantasy world! Feel free to go with something other than human. As of now there is no official list of race options, so pick whatever you like or come up with something new and we'll incorporate it into the (minimal) world lore.

Awakening does not change the awakened's appearance, save for one thing: a symbol will appear in the center of each new hero's forehead. Called the Goddess Eye, this mark is said to be the way that she sees everything her heroes achieve in order to reward them. It also enables each hero to get a rough estimate of their comrades' and rivals' HP. The basic mark is red-orange and simple, but if you're so inclined feel free to go with another interpretation. It's not that unusual for heroes to have Goddess Eyes of different shapes and colors, even with many detailed parts, though all are vaguely recognizable as eyes.

.
.

When you're finished, write your character concept down in a character sheet! It can be as simple or as fancy as you want! You can also include as much extra information as you want, just be sure to include everything from the creation guide.
Here's a super basic sheet with the minimum required information!

The favorite to win is Darien Waynard, the only son of the ISGP committee's chairman. Gifted, daring, and with the full backing of the committee's coffers, they say it's a fool's errand to race against him. When he's behind the wheel, he always takes a place at the podium.
Not to mention that in this race, there would be no lack of brutes, cheats, and rapscallions all vying to make it first over the finish line. Placing at all opens a lot of doors for people, and competitors are willing to do anything to make that happen for themselves. Big names, dangerous racers. For a rookie there's no winning even if you survive the course.
That's what they say.

But you're gonna prove 'em wrong. You're gonna prove 'em all wrong.

Glory, fame, and status await you if you win. Through victory in The ISGP, anything is possible. Crimes are pardoned, princesses offer their hands in marriage, gifts from every corner of the known universe are showered upon the winner.
Their name is forever known throughout every galaxy.

Oh yeah, and there's also a cash prize of one hundred trillion credits,
but who's counting?

Welcome to
Interstellar Super Grand Prix

The Setting
Part F-Zero, part IGPX, part Redline, and borrowing much from a TTRPG called Gravity Rip.

It started as a sporting event to promote unity and understanding between worlds. Representatives would come together and show off their culture and their tech, letting the competitive spirit drive innovation with knowledge shared from other species. Machines and their pilots put on races to entertain and earn some bragging rights. Once kings and corporations started getting involved, it quickly spiraled out of control.

The ISGP Committee oversees most organized racing events in general, and the officialInterstellar Super Grand Prixrace series has grown to be the largest sporting event in the known universe. Qualifiers take place over multiple weeks on different circuits on different planets, planets that pay exorbitant sums in order to get the chance to host them. Tens of thousands of Pilots dream of earning a spot in the line-up. Thousands apply, and hundreds are eliminated throughout these qualifiers. By the end, less than two dozen Pilots will compete onWoHiras, the permanent stage of the ISGP Final.

Our story begins on the planetHx Nubilom, where in just one day the first race in the ISGP series will commence...

Where YOU come in
Whether a veteran racer or a prodigious newbie, you are playing a first time participant in the ISGP. Through brute force, bribery, blatant cheating or maybe even pure skill, you have survived the qualifiers!

[ char creations stuff idfk. buy perks with stat points?? ]

Before spending creation points to make your Pilot, remember that it might be a good idea to save some of those points for your Machine! A Pilot is nothing without their Machine, and not only are they two halves of the same character sheet, but they share the same creation point pool. Make sure not to neglect it.
Your MACHINE

"Machine" is a catch-all term for the vehicles that ISGP participants pilot - and even "Pilot" in itself is a catch-all. Since the early days of the ISGP, participants have been allowed to use whatever technology suited them. Historically this has ranged from high powered automobiles to hover and repulsorcrafts to even humanoid mecha frames. Some purchase top of the line vehicles, some covert instruments of war into sporting crafts, and some build their Machine themselves from the ground up. As long as it can go fast and is suitable for racing, it's allowed.

...well, there have been some rules implemented since those early days.

As stated, the Machine must go fast. Minimum speed is ((150 MPH?)) , and there is no maximum cap. The Machine must also stay on the track, planes and ships that fly far above or skip the course entirely are barred from entry. Rule three is that all Machines must be equipped with an emergency eject - it gets dangerous out there. Weaponry, from simple cap spikes to mounted artillery, is not technically allowed either. If they are found upon Machine inspection, the Pilot will have to remove such modifications before the race. However if the Machine happens to pass inspection either through concealing them well enough or greasing a few palms, well... once the race gets going, who's going to stop you?

Your Machine has stats.

(NOT SET IN STONE) SPEED, ACCELERATION, WEIGHT, HANDLING, OFFENSE, STYLE

SPEED - how fast your Machine can go.
ACCELERATION - how quickly your Machine can reach its top speed.
WEIGHT - your Machine's resistance against being pushed or flipping over.
HANDLING - how well your Machine handles turns and precise maneuvers.
OFFENSE - how good your Machine is at pushing its way through the pack.
STYLE - Does nothing but say how fucking cool your Machine looks.

( again below not set in stone )

Acceleration and Offense could be said to be the "offensive" stats, Weight and Handling would be the "defensive" stats, Speed like a "wildcard". When you want to move up a position, you could roll against your Acceleration to blaze past those in front of you when you find an opening. Or maybe you want to get aggressive and make the opening yourself with your Offense? Successful rolls mean you'll move up... as long as the people in front of you roll worse than you. They could use their Handling to physically block your quick advance, or the bulk of their vehicle to put a stop to your pushing.

Put more simply, Acceleration > Weight > Offense > Handling > Acceleration. At least I hope that was simple. If you feel like you can instead pit your Speed against any other skill, but there is a reason you may not want to go all in on Speed: the course will also test your Machine's stats. Tight turns might require you to roll your Handling, poor conditions might have you test your Weight. And in straightaways you'd have to put pedal to metal and test Acceleration to get ahead of the pack as quickly as possible.

Each stat ranges in value from 1 to 5, with 5 being the best performance. Your Pilot knows about how fast their Machine can go, how heavy it is, etc. but the numerical value of the stats is for OOC reference and not part of the IC RP.

Your Machine has a Grade.

The Grade is the average of the Machine's stats. It's a quick way to tell a Machine's overall quality. A Machine's Grade is registered with the committee and is an IC fact known to any who have the mind to look that information up. Grades are listed as letters from A through E. A = 5, E = 1, and so on. When averaging the stats, if you get a decimal then round to the nearest whole number (up if .5 or higher, down if lower).

As an example, Johnny Fastman's Machine "HyperBlue" is Grade A, making it a top of line vehicle. Jenny Fasterman's "DragonRose" is also Grade A. But the way their players filled out the Machine stats will make the performances of each machine different. It is common for a Machine of a lower Grade to outperform one of a higher Grade in certain stats, but in general one can expect a higher Grade Machine to be better quality than a lower Grade one.

A Dark Urban Fantasy
__________________________________________________

A world in darkness.

Not the darkness of night humanity is used to, dancing shadows broken up by man-made fluorescence, the moon, the stars.
An all-encompassing darkness, primordial and pure, brought about by the complete absence of light.
A world where nothing can survive.
Not even nightmares lurk there.

It is the ultimate goal of the Moloch, primal beings, who long to return to that endless, lightless night.

They toil towards that desire whensoever they manifest, and death follows in their wake whether they sprint or amble. Powerful and all but immortal, in time their corruptive influence would spread across the planet and plunge the world into eternal dark...

But they are not unbeatable; and humanity not without its protectors.
__________________________________________________

Lightless Night is a hodge podge urban fantasy brainchild designed for cliche fun that doesn't particularly care if something makes hard logical sense so long as the scenes, characters, and themes its players want to write are possible. This is an invite only roleplay.

@Yankee will act as a GM in order to facilitate the stories, character arcs, and specific scenarios that players want to include. The general setting is a simple one, with players creating characters that are magi, humans with varied spiritual powers who work to put down monsters and fight back Moloch. The general vibe is modern, urban fantasy, hope in darkness, anime action, edgy and cool characters, found family, shady organizations, esoteric abilities, soft magic system, monster battling, operating from the shadows, transformation and corruption, hurt/comfort, and whatever else the cast wants to include.

Some specific inspirational works: the Garo series, Blue Exorcist, various Type-Moon works, little bit of Zenless Zone Zero.
__________________________________________________

MONSTERS

Dark creatures driven by instinct and hunger, set apart from mere animals by their paranormal bodies, supernatural abilities, and their connection to the formation of Makai. Monsters have lived alongside humanity since they both crawled out of the primordial soup, their relationship always one of animosity. Different religions and cultures have different names for different monsters, as well as differing methods for destroying them, and all are valid. However it has been observed that monsters reproduce both sexually and asexually, meaning that total eradication of a species is a far off goal.

A monster's strength is directly related to its level of intelligence. A large, heavy monster is only as powerful as its strategy to escape or defeat rival monsters. Most monsters cannot hope to match a human in intelligence, which make them truly dangerous only to those alone, unprepared, or inexperienced. Still, the damage even a single one can cause -especially within a Makai- cannot be overstated. Individual monsters have been noted to be able to change and evolve. Some grow stronger by absorbing power from other monsters, and the humans that come to defeat them.

If a monster's brain was able to undergo a new level of evolution, is it possible they could even become a Moloch...?

MAKAI

Pockets of purest darkness that form around high paranormal power output. They normally begin to form when a monster grows too strong, or comes into contact with another monster on a hunt. The size of a Makai is proportional to the power used to create it. The formation of a Makai is considered a natural phenomenon connected to Moloch, as attempts to recreate one in a controlled setting have so far failed.

From the outside a Makai appears as a dark bubble around an area, and from the inside it is much the same. All light, from fire to electricity, is snuffed out. Even the sun cannot penetrate it. Sound waves from outside the bubble are diluted and muffled. Besides the disorienting effect, Makai negatively affect anything within it. Inorganic objects will break down over time, and living creatures will become violently sick.
The sick will die or they will change.

Monsters and Magi have a higher resistance to Makai Sickness, but they are not immune.

Makai can be destabilized by removing the power source they manifest around. A destabilized Makai will eventually fade away, but the longer a Makai is fully formed before being separated from its power source and the longer it will last afterward before inevitably collapsing. They can form anywhere at anytime, whether in forests, oceans, or urban city sprawls.

MOLOCH

Primordial beings said to have inhabited the earth before any other forms of life. Or, to have inhabited the blackness of space and were trapped on the planet when it began to form. Though they have physical bodies that can be damaged and sealed away like any other monstrosity, it would be a mistake to consider them just elite monsters.

Whether they are alien or supernatural in make-up is unknown. Their exact numbers are unknown. The limits of their power are unknown.
The method for destroying them permanently is unknown.

For centuries humanity has fought back the Moloch and prevented their lightless night from manifesting. These battles are hard won due to each Moloch's strength and intelligence, but like men they all have their own traits and personalities that can be exploited. Their penchant for working alone when they do appear, however rarely, has allowed humanity to reliably put them down almost every time no matter the casualties. It can take hundreds of years for a defeated Moloch to reform, but there is no question that in time it will.

Every monster species, large or small, weak or strong, can trace its origins back to a Moloch's 'blood.'
Even humans are said to be born from Moloch.

MAGI

Like monsters, humans have the capacity to wield the paranormal via a special organ called a spiritual core. This is most often seen when a human's physical body breaks down, revealing their core and spirit form, commonly called a 'ghost.' Some humans have mystical abilities beyond becoming a ghost that they can use while alive: clairvoyants, psychics, and other more spiritually attuned individuals. Rarely, others transcend their ghost form after death, becoming more similar to monsters. Then, there are magi.

A mage's paranormal power is a cut above most humans, though there are no standards to truly measure them against each other. Magi are uniquely adapted to resisting the corrosion of being in a Makai, and thus are the best defense against monsters and Moloch alike. Due to their strong spiritual cores most magi hail from storied lineages of humanity's defenders, but that is not always the case... any human with potential can learn to utilize their power and become a mage. It takes talent, but it also takes practice.

Though the powers individual magi wield are vast and varied there are a few more common traits that can use used to classify them, such as how they manifest their spiritual power. As humans are wont to do, businesses and societies catering to magi were glad to be able to slap a label on their clients and members. These societies are hidden from the public eye whenever possible, with rumors and conspiracy the common man's shield from a mage's work of fighting back the darkness.

In addition, most magi have specialized senses that help them navigate inside of a Makai. The spectral sense -also known as the sixth sense- is more developed in magi than other humans, and works in tandem with the other senses. Within Makai there is only pitch darkness, but with focus a mage is able to perceive the area in black with dull white outlines and colorless features. A mage with particularly strong eyes -spectral eyes- may see sparks of color every now and then before they are consumed by the Makai. A mage's senses are invaluable to them, but sight is especially revered, so many go on to develop visual abilities -hereditary or otherwise- that they are quite proud of. Of course a smart mage will not rely on just one sense to fight.
__________________________________________________
Choose your location

Though individual countries may have government branches or covert departments that work with or manage magi, there is no universal organization that oversees them. Just as every mage is more or less unique, the way each nation chooses to handle their magi differ. There are many magi that operate independently of any local or national organizations, and there are many families with enough influence that they hold seats of political power in their home lands. Magi have always existed, and for the most part are a necessary existence to ensure humanity's continued survival, but one that the majority of people don't understand or are not even consciously aware of. This is intentional, as whether on their own or as part of an organization, magi work covertly.

They are modern myth, the grizzly reality of their battles kept far from the public eye whenever possible.

Crepuscule
GLOAM
Tasogare

Tōhoku Tasogare is based in Sendai. It is where our chosen story will be taking place. Tasogare is a structured organization, though Tōhoku's Tasogare is smaller and a little more laid back than, say Tokyo's Tasogare. In this option a mage's lineage is an important aspect of how others see them, sometimes to the point that it can cast a shadow on an otherwise spotless record of service or elevate a subpar mage to coast on their family's reputation. Created characters will be members of Tasogare, whether newly recruited or experienced magi. Real world locations will be referenced and mentioned, but the story is still entirely fictional. There will be anime tropes.

With a mountain of paperwork to sort through, his first order of business was to draft a series of letters. They were not pleas for help, nor offers of hire. They were notes for the collection of debt.

In an undisclosed time, at an undisclosed place, you made a deal. In exchange, you achieved something great. You received something amazing. You became someone important. You made someone else whole. You destroyed another person. You signed an IOU in blood.

In the budding spring you have traveled to the city of

Ava has only one ability, but it's all she needs. With it, she can manipulate the elements, enhance her body to superhuman levels, harness psychic energy, create and destroy. Run faster than a speeding bullet, leap tall buildings in a single bound, and all that jazz.

Her power is anything at any given time, provided she has resources available to her; because simply put, her ability is Talent Theft.

She can copy the powers and abilities of others that she is exposed to. She only has to see the ability being used in order to replicate the action exactly, but touching another person allows for a much deeper, more complete copying. For example, after watching an artist paint a portrait Ava will be able to paint the exact same piece down to the stroke. If she touches the artist, she has all of their artistic ability and can create anything she likes with the same level of skill. If she watched someone conjure a flame in their hand, she can conjure one too - and if she touches the flame user, she can wield fire as though she was born with the ability.

Technically she isn't stealing these powers as their original users still retain them even after she copies them, although it would be pretty interesting if she could somehow tweak her own power to mess with those she takes from. She also cannot keep these abilities indefinitely. Ava likens her power to a sponge: it can hold a surprising amount of water, but eventually it has to be rung out. Normally the copied abilities disappear after sleep (whether natural or knocked out), but she can choose to 'ring herself out' early. The more abilities she holds at once, the worse her recovery period is when she returns to her 'dry' state.

Auri believes what other people tell him about himself. When they say he's better suited to manual labor, that scholarly pursuits and clever schemes are beyond him, he accepts it as fact. When they liken him to a mule or a dog, he squints his eyes in confusion but understands the simile is true.

He is not a doormat however; this dog has a bark, and a bite so to speak. Though grounded and friendly for the most part, Auri tends to snap when he feels pressured and will definitely argue when its warranted. He is steadfast, dependable, and fiercely protective of the people he loves. Also generally optimistic, if a little dim-witted, or at least that's what's been said about him. Due to his background he is also very adaptable and does not shy away from dirty work or fights, especially on behalf of someone else.

Over the past year he's found loneliness make its way into his overall personality too. Before now he's always been together with his family, no matter what shape it took, but now on his own he finds he isn't sure what to do with himself. Mostly he's dealt with it, and the myriad of other negative emotions he's bottled up, by taking on more and more work.

The hamlet of Hailstone was so named for the rocks and pebbles that would rain down from the mountain that it sat at the base of. It was a small mining village about a half day's walk from the larger Bowcomb Town, where residents could bring their goods for trade. It wasn't particularly poor all things considered. Due to the location, the people that lived there often thought that if disaster were to strike it would surely come in the form of a rock slide that buried them. As it turned out, that would not be the case.

One could easily guess what the later part of Auri's childhood was like if they paid any attention to the political maneuvering of the continent's nations. Refugee from his hometown with his father and brother, they traveled south with other family groups in a cycle of settling in new towns and fleeing war. Then, just after things got particularly bad, it was himself, his pa, and his siblings. They kept moving, doing all kinds of work to keep themselves fed, staying in campsites rather than villages, accumulating chunks of experience in may kinds of situations; they were survivors. When they finally hit the border, it was just Auri and Albi - his youngest sister.

Auri joined the Adventurer's Guild more out necessity than anything else. They accepted applicants of any status, and taking jobs was a reliable way to make money. If he did well he'd gain rank and reputation, and more status meant more pay and better opportunities. At first Auri split time between Guild work and other odd labor in order to support Albi to the best of his ability. Eventually they could afford to send the clever kid to a proper school, and when she left for the boarding academy Auri shifted to dedicate his full attention to adventuring.

His choices left him little time to experiment with his own capabilities, and combined with the general impression he left on fellow guildmates it cemented Auri as a simple one-note adventurer. He had no reason to disbelieve the evaluation. Still, it remains steady income and over time he's even grown to enjoy the work. He remains a registered adventurer with the class designation of Fighter, bound for a large scale expedition in the coming days.

Prepare to spend another day enduring the unendurable, and suffering the insufferable to pave the way for humanity's future greatness!
Be ready to give your lives to protect our beloved school from the vile and barbaric enemy!

You are living through your final year of schooling in the TRC –Tokyo Residential Complex– a massive metropolis composed of innumerable clusters of residential buildings encapsulated in a giant dome, where lights in the ceiling above the complex simulate day and night, and shelters are built into the ground to protect citizens from danger. You have lived your entire life here, and so have your parents. Whether mundane or unusual, fulfilling or monotonous, for the most part your life is a peaceful one.

Until the day the sirens blare and for once it is not a drill, and that life is interrupted by destruction and blood.

You may remember death, monsters, a knife in your hands and boiling in your veins. Or you may remember nothing at all. But when you next wake, it is in an unfamiliar classroom with a group of strangers around your age. A strange being stands at the head of the class to inform you of your new obligation: you are a transfer student now attending Last Defense Academy, and you have been conscripted to fight a war on which the survival of all humanity hinges.

You will spend the next one hundred days becoming familiar with your new school, bonding with the other students that together form your Special Defense Unit, and most importantly developing your combat potential in order to slaughter the monsters that will come to kill you.

Your comfort is secondary to your education, and your life is a renewable resource to be given over to the war machine. Every morning a cheerful announcement plays over the speakers in the building, always reminding you of your mission:

Prepare to spend another day enduring the unendurable, and suffering the insufferable to pave the way for humanity's future greatness!
Be ready to give your lives to protect our beloved school from the vile and barbaric enemy!

It's me, ya girl Yankee, pitching an RP that might be a little niche. Before anyone stops reading due to this being a fandom RP they may not be familiar with, let me just get the premise out there: this is part anime ass battles and part academy slice of life, with a militaristic veneer and science-fantasy bend. You do not need to know the source to play. In fact, it's probably better if you don't!

You play members of a Special Defense Unit tasked with protecting the last hope of humanity. Pretty much everything surrounding this mission (what this last hope is, who you are protecting it from, why you were chosen, etc.) is kept secret from the characters - it is up to them if they accept without question or try to uncover the answers in whatever way they see fit. These characters wield a power called Hemoanima that allows them to manifest weapons with which to fight, and which can grow in strength over the course of the story. Oh, but you can't neglect your studies even while you're busy fighting a war! There will be periods of down time where characters are expected to attend pre-recorded lectures, pass tests, and get to know your brothers in arms/fellow students.

If you're interested, I'll be happy to answer any questions you might have. All I would want from you is a fun character concept to start with. Your character can be as plain or weird as you want, from run of the mill background student A to junior professional wrestler. Rich, poor, friendly, aloof... as long as you'll have fun writing their personality as they grapple with their new reality. Characters can be as open or as stand offish as you want; inter-group tension and fighting, even refusal to participate is expected, but lone wolves will be forced to fight eventually just like everyone else. They will also be forced to die, as those with Hemoanima can be revived in certain circumstances. Character death will not be just a possibility - it's a guarantee!

Wake up, study, bond, fight, die - and then do it over and over again.

This RP is intended to last for 100 in-character days, with each day broken up into sections to more easily push the story along. Ambitious, I know. Battles will occur periodically over this period which I expect will take more time. I am currently toying with a simple grid-based battlefield to give fight scenes more of a strategic feel rather than simply free form. Characters will have numerical HP to keep track of during battle, among other things. There is also a general plan in place for ending the RP early, extending it past its 100 day life, rebooting it entirely if the players want, and for late joiners to be able to participate. I also would not be opposed to people playing mulitple characters if they wanted to.

A detailed character creation guide and example sheet will follow, as well as in-character daily schedule break down and an in-depth explanation of how I am thinking about handling combat (no dice rolling but there will be a simple system of sorts in place) if people actually end up interested in this. For the record, in addition to acting as GM and playing story NPCs, I also plan to play a member of the SDU myself!

Hemoanima Abilities ☣

Class Weapon
» Defibrillator ♡
The device is about twice as large as normal, strapped to Ayari like a backpack. Old fashioned paddles on curling cords are attached to it, which come forward to rest in holsters just above her hips on each side of her. Their reach is short, making her class weapon primarily melee use. On use, heals 1 point of damage or deals 1 point of damage depending on the setting.

Class Armor
» Standard black serafuku with white highlights, the ribbon tied into a tight bow. Her skirt and socks are knee-length. Red make-up highlights the edges of her eyes, and three small lines in the same color that nearly converge at the bottoms paint the center of her forehead. Her blood burns royal blue in her chest.

Specialist Skill
» Special Galvanize
Units healed by Ayari are left with a little extra juice to energize them, gaining the Galvanized status. Galvanized units move a little faster and can perform 1 extra action. Galvanized expires at the end of turn or when extra action is used up.

Last Resort
» System Surge
Slams both paddles onto the ground to unleash a shock wave that spreads out from her location, reaching a decently wide area. Allies touched by the shock wave all gain the Galvanized status until their next turn; enemies touched by the shock wave all gain the Stunned status until their next turn. Ayari perishes afterward.

What makes a champion?

Are they born with innate talent?
Do they find some spark of genius already buried within themselves?
Are they molded only by the hands of masters?

Or are they formed from intense pressure and the blazing heat of their hearts?
Something from nothing; coal to diamond.

Aoikaze Comprehensive High School, known by its nickname「Aosou」is a private school that's been undergoing some interesting changes. Among the many options in Niigata City it was not an unpopular choice for scholarly pursuits, so a new administration's choice to pour funds into new and improved sports programs instead of intellectual ones naturally drew many critics. But it worked. Special tuition rates for fledgling athletes drew more student applicants, raised the level of their sports clubs, and earned more donations from families and neighborhood locals. Now, the school can begin to boast success stories for a broader variety of graduates. The likes of Aosou's physical clubs like judo, soccer, and more are on their way to becoming fairly formidable in their prefecture.

...all except their baseball club, which still struggles to find its footing. Is the competition from other schools just too fierce, is there no more drive to be found among Aoikaze Sougou's student body? Maybe the next generation of students -of players- will finally set that spark to catch... and become the first to bring Koushien's championship flag into snow country.

Lately, I've been craving a sports anime RP of some kind. Of the handful of sports I'm most familiar with, I think a classic baseball story sounds like it'll be pretty fun and more simple to do in a play-by-post RP format. Oh, and I'm bullying @Sloth into being my co-GM and moral support.

This is not a just a baseball RP - it is important to note this is also an anime RP. Along with the aesthetic, it will come with all of the shenanigans and tropes one can expect from an anime RP. What's that? You're asking about super powers a la Prince of Tennis and other similar sports anime series? Hmm, I prefer a story that's a little more grounded, but maybe we can work something small in~

"Do I have to know the rules of baseball to join this RP?"

Not at all! We can simplify them for anyone unsure, though I recommend playing a character that's a novice and learning alongside them!

"What kind of character can I play?"

A highschool student living in Japan will be what we need the most of, but team managers, faculty advisors, coaches, and the like are also applicable. For students any school year is fine, and the school is co-ed. Typically high school sports clubs are separated by sex, but if it's more fun for people we can go with a co-ed team too! Players giving their characters weird or special quirks is totally cool. Applying with more than one character is fine as well!

"Does my character have to be from Niigata?"

Nope! They just have to attend school (or work) there. Actually we can swap cities or regions no problem if people prefer, though it will just be home base - the cast will travel for practice and tournaments. Characters can be transfer students from elsewhere, exchange students from other countries, or have different ancestries. Almost anything goes!

"I want to play as the team's pitcher!"

Whoa whoa whoa! That's good, you know what you want for your character! But that character will have to work to get there. When the RP starts, characters will show off their skills and compete for the positions they want. If that position is being fought over and your character doesn't end up getting it at first, please don't despair. Your character just gained a rival to grow and compete with. All stories need some drama, so keep fighting for your spot! ...in-character!

I have a general plan for story progression, including breaking down the RP into arcs and chapters and a completely optional and very simple dice system to add some element of tension for us as writers.

I'll explain more if this gets past the interest check stage. I'd love to hear expectations, opinions, feedback, and of course any ideas from people so we can all work together to make a really fun story!

A relatively simple character sheet is best, I think. We'll learn all about each character in play after all. The below is what I've come up with using my planned characters as examples. However, feel free to use any sort of format you want and include any additional information you like. If you want to play a second or third year character, go ahead and give them a position and such on the team if you want to - but they will still have to compete to keep their spot at the story's beginning and beyond! That goes for GM characters too!

If you want to play faculty or a team manager instead or in addition to, you can switch up the sections on your sheet for more relevant info. You don't have to stick to the same information I used, but if you feel more comfortable copying my sheets then that works too!

Chikami Toyoda
樋田 近美

School Year: First Year

Gender: Male (he/him)

Height: 178 cm | Weight: 68 kg

Home Town: Sado, Niigata Prefecture

About: Don't you think 'opened yourself up to better opportunities' sounds better than 'ran away'? Chikami certainly does. Friendly, accommodating, and just a little cagey about his past, Chikami came to the mainland for one simple reason: to try and spend some time in the sun after living beneath a metaphorical shadow for so long. Might as well play the sport he loves while he does it. Aosou was one of the more affordable options in Niigata that featured a dorm, but he is pretty sure that he would have been able to thrive anywhere so long as he put his mind to it. Oh yes, being positive all the time takes work and some serious brain power!

Current Position: n/a
Jersey Number: n/a
Batting Order: n/a

Throws: Right | Bats: Left

(Chikami is a club member but has not made the team yet. Some first year character information will start n/a)

Atsumu Satou
佐藤 侑

School Year: Third Year

Gender: Male (he/him)

Height: 183 cm | Weight: 76 kg

Home Town: Niigata, Niigata Prefecture

About: Fellow students will tell you that in class, Atsumu is polite and attentive - a model student who isn't hard to talk to even if he keeps mostly to himself. However the members of the baseball club will tell you a much different story. On the field, Atsumu is a ruthless taskmaster with a cruel tongue whose ire is the stuff of nightmares for his underclassmen. As a vice captain he does his best to keep the club members in line and in shape, especially any would-be pitchers which he revels in taking down a few notches. He works hard at everything he does. The rumors that he actually does have a heart somewhere in his chest? Definitely exaggerated!

Current Position: Catcher
Jersey Number: 2
Batting Order: Sixth ____

Throws: Right | Bats: Right

Hikari Noujima
能島 光凜

Alma Mater: UCSD

Gender: Female (she/her)

Height: 170 cm | Weight: ♥♥ kg

Home Town: Sanjou, Niigata Prefecture

About: Hikari was just one of many kids who grew up loving the sport. She stuck with hard ball throughout her school years, though she did swap to soft ball in college. Turned out adapting to it was just easier than trying to worm her way onto the men's team on top of navigating her life as an international student in a new country. Wouldn't trade the experience for anything, though. With spontaneous adventure complete and diploma in hand she got crazy lucky to arrive back in Japan at the same time a school in the next city over put out a few job postings. She isn't sure the school's board are in their right minds, but... "Coach Noujima" has got a great ring to it, huh?

Current Role: Coach*
Tenure: Brand New
Teaches: n/a . . . . .

Throws: Right | Bats: Right

(*depending on other character applications, Noujima will be either an assistant or head coach)
