This is going to sound really weird, but I've found that cinematic script writing has had a huge impact on how I wrote for a long time. Battle Fleet Gothic Armada 1 and 2 especially, this style of narration and prose is something I ended up copying and emulating a lot. Even now I favor a sort of "grandness" in writing I can't quite explain.

Jim Bucher of The Dresden Files fame has always been an author whose style I love. I really want to learn how to write the way he does because the imagery, pace and humor he uses in a modern fantasy setting is just perfect, in my eyes.

I enjoy reading Anne Rice, Stephen King and Brian Lumley as well as plenty of others, but Butcher's style just mirrors the goal for my own style of writing far better. Everything is done in the protagonist's first person perspective and , even knowing the characters' thoughts to some extent, Butcher still finds ways to surprise the reader, add suspense, and even be a bit cheeky.

Tolkien. No explanation needed there.

Dean Koontz. Don't hate. He's a master of his genre, and taught me how to indulge in rapid-fire, first-person narration.

Jack London. Perhaps the best describer I've ever read. He made you see, hear, smell, and feel everything.

Edgar Allan Poe. Never be afraid to be weird.

Madeleine L'engle. Let your heart soar through your stories, and break earthly boundaries.

Charlotte Brontë. There is beauty in internal torment and the drawn-out agonies of unfulfilled longing.

I'm sure there are many more, but that's enough for now.

In terms of Authors: John Flanagan (rangers apprentice guy) has a poetically simplistic style I strive for! I also started roleplaying around them same time I began reading the Arkday Renko Series and those books really influenced my style and way of building stories/plots.

I also have had plenty of partners who really pushed me to improve. One of them is a member here that has not return in a while: ArkhamInmate333. He's a great writer and helped me improve my writing! Similarly a member I have never been able to find again, helped me learn how to write fighting better with a pokemon roleplay! I wish we finished it, but alas.

Lovecraft, Poe, Tolstoy, Robert E. Howard, Harold Lamb, Edgar Rice Burroughs, and Sapkowski. Each have specific aspects of their writing that I aim to acquire and master; from the strange, to the gothic, realism to fantastical natures, the crispness of prose whilst still being delightfully descriptive, and of course, action and adventure played out across sweeping, grandiose stages.

(Currently) Haruki Murakami and (still) Kazuo Ishiguro. I was briefly inspired by Osamu Dazai for a month or two but not so much anymore.

If I am ever writing in first-person, Jim Butcher (of The Dreden Files) employs a style I like very much and is one I try to emulate.

A lot of my writing influences come from science fiction and fantasy I read when I was in middle school. Off the top of my head, I can think of authors like Michael Crichton, HG Wells, CS Lewis, and JRR Tolkien being my biggest inspirations for getting into writing. Though other media influenced me, including Star Wars, Bionicle, and Halo were also big inspirations.
