The Conceit

Alagia Romance is a Japanese role-playing video game that mixes elements of romantic visual novels, grand strategy, and dynamic action-adventure to create a setting that engrosses the player and ensures they never stop playing the game. The game purports to have over dozens of routes and “endless” dynamic endings, making the selling point to various fans that there is no wrong way to play the game and no true way to win the game.

Players either take control of Edgar or Janeisse, two characters with different backstories to serve as the player-insert.

It is up to them to forge alliances, romances, or feuds to influence the flow of the narrative. Their vocation, skills, and interests are all up to definition by the player, though one can defer the original default setting of these characters if one feels the need to. As they play, players will direct their characters toward The Great Dragonkeep where they will attend university and meet a colorful cast of characters with obligations, factions, and secrets. As the story unravels, or as the player sets their own events in motion, war and revolt will break out and decisions will have to be made.

-or at least, that is the case normally.

For some reason, several people have been reborn into the world of Alagia Romance into insignificant NPC (otherwise known as "mobs") families. People who know some aspects of the game. This will assuredly change the dynamics of the world going forward... should they adapt correctly. And thus the wheel of Alagia turns once more.

Have Suit. Will Travel.

The year is 2678 and the people in the northernmost stretch of the Sea of Thieves find themselves in a concernable situation.

The region has always been dangerous and tumultuous, but in the last few months the people of Last Hope and its neighbors have seen a change in the balance of power. New packs of raiders have encroached right in the middle of their trading lines, manipulating power stations and defense mechanisms that have kept their settlements safe for the last fifty years with no rhyme or reason. Their connections with the old guard have gone dark and with few mechs to defend themselves of their own they have hit the timer on the proverbial doomsday clock.

A bunch of credits have been scrounged up and Jonas Ray has left Last Hope to go and recruit the best mech pilots he can find. Hopefully he finds enough to turn the scales before it is too late.
Overview

The world of Polaris is a dark one. The remains of the planet Earth sit in dystopia following a devastating war that left survivors scrambling for resources.

Not long after the smoke cleared, the corporations soon took advantage of the chaos and carved out territories where they could no longer be dictated by the declining state governments of the world. After nearly five hundred years, the status quo they dreamed of has become true. Corporate executives reign from their castles in their megacities, casting stones for sport while the people on the outside live in harsh, almost unlivable conditions. Cruel mercenaries far from these centers of society prey on the weak, stealing resources, killing whoever tries to stop them, and selling the rest to whoever is willing to buy.

In the middle of this fight between corporations, scavengers, raiders, and everyone else is the one thing that ties them all together: the Neural Combatant. These machines, piloted by extraordinary individuals with cybernetic implants, are both the destroyers of this world and the saviors. What role will your pilot take by their end of their lives on this neverending battle between the forces of good and evil? And how will they cope with the mental strain of the machines they have tied their lives to?
Neural Combatants

A normal bipedal tank is dangerous, but oftentimes the power sources of these machines are not adequate for large armors or weapons. In the earliest days of the post-apocalypse they were a dangerous force to be reckoned with, but ultimately their use was overshadowed when the megacorporations dug up something far more powerful.

The Neural Combatant, or NC, is the pinnacle of military engineering. The antimatter generator runs through its frame into a unique neural node. A neural node that can only be accessed by a pilot who has synchronized completely with the strange and mysterious neural net, a network that links the pilot to a space that even today cyberneticists still can’t make heads-or-tails of. Without a compatible biochemistry these cores cannot be accessed and as such, the neural combatants themselves become effectively useless. The one benefit of a mech is anyone can pilot it with the right hands on the wheel. The cockpit inside the neural combatant’s frame has no such wheel, only an ignition. If you don’t have the right “key”, you’re out of luck. But if you do, not a single mech on this world can compete with a neural combatant one-on-one.

For five hundred years, the neural net is still unknowable. Another issue has found itself in the realm of commodity. There is no such way to replicate the design of the combatant’s core and attempts to do so have resulted with utter failure; the only way to acquire a combatant is to find one. The megacorporations have done everything they can to claw out the secrets of these combatants and to acquire any they can find. For years, the corporations have had their way in this arms race. Independent paramilitary companies have merged with them, or contracted their services to their business model. Neural Combatants that don’t fall into corporate hands are with these companies or among the wastes. A handful of neural combatants have been found in the Sea of Thieves, coined for its large population of independent settlements of scavengers and violent, raider encampments. Far and away from the megacorporations, they are left alone. Until they aren’t.

In 2155, a group of scavengers found two neural combatant cores. They are now living in a megacity in the lap of luxury. In 2117, a small settlement found a core of their own. They were killed by raiders who took the core for themselves. There are many such fates in the Sea of Thieves.

But even if you procure a neural combatant’s core, fitted it with weapons, and found a compatible pilot the universe still spits on you from on high.

Pilots who are compatible with the neural net meld their mind with the obscure network, becoming one with the machine. In moments of true, complete synchronization a lasting echo thunders in their mind causing damage that corporate psychologists have theorized is irreparable and severe. This effect has been thusly named a “Polaris Shift”. Every time the synchronization warps the mind, the shift occurs, and while it grants them even more control of their suit the effects outside are variable and unknowable. Long time pilots report mental lapses, psychoactive fits, nerve damage, and other such things. No pilot’s burden is the same.

It is a terrible irony. To survive in this hellish world, you have to go a little insane to do so.
The World That Is

The dissolution of old world state governments and the rise of corporation rule came after the war ended and survivors scrambled back to city centers. Corporations had burrowed deep within shelters underneath the surface where their wealth, capital, and resources could be hoarded for when the war inevitably ended.

These corporations took to rebuilding these city centers, to which they would eventually create cities atop the ruins of what once was. These cities would eventually become megacities, walled cybertech marvels where the only government was done by a corporate committee. Many survivors accepted the new status quo. Those who didn’t moved further away, hoping to find solace in their independence. This schism divided survivors into three denominations: dweller, settler, and raider.

The corporations didn’t care. They had their mecha battalions, food, and clean water. Those who didn’t accept the new pecking order would be checks on a form eventually. This was true in many respects as corporations expanded century-after-century. They waged war against one another and with the discovery of neural combatant cores became even more bold. Dwellers thrived as they met quotas and supported their executives. Settlers were caught in skirmishes and crossfires. Raiders picked off scavengers in the chaos.

Time carried on further. More war. More technological developments. The megacities adopted new power sources such as the thermodynamics of microwave power plants, fabrication factories allowed for more processing of metalworks, and eventually plasma and thermal batteries were devised. Datatools replaced computers and communication devices. A new age of cybernetics. Cities such as Seattle, Denver, Las Vegas, and others became titans of the new world. Beyond technology, the corporate boards that ran these cities began funding paramilitary factions and becoming more-and-more apathetic toward anybody they could step on for security and prosperity. All while the settlers that refused to become dwellers survived by a hair as they dealt with new world monstrosities and raiders aplenty.
The Megacorps

While there are many megacorporations of varying size around the new world, in the North American area there are five who are in a constant power struggle as they look to expand, secure, and protect what they view as capital gain assets. They are as follows:

The Blackstone Corporation:
-

-

Denver-Vegas Industry Group:
-

-

The Elysian Dream:
-

-

Fairbanks Incorporated:
-

-

Lone Star Technologies:
-

-
Components & Armaments

Manufacturers have created armors for NCs since the era of the Neural Combatant began in the new world. Many of these were built as subsidiaries of the megacorporations, though some operate independently, hoping that their use provides enough capital to give them the freedom to do as they please. Quality ranges from group to group, as does price, though they all more or less get the job done. The standardization of weapon types are ballistic, thermal, ion, and plasma. They are listed from cheapest and most available to expensive and least available.

Reinforced armor additions to NC frames are not uncommon to protect the electronical infrastructure of an armor. With the advent of fabrication factories to make metal effectively out of nothing getting fitted for more armor is relatively inexpensive for pilots, given they are paid in more than pennies. A list of common components will be listed below:

Significant Events

2240 CE: Survivors congregate at city centers, looking to rebuild.

2678 CE: Starting Date.

Return to Iquenos

Hello, readers! Welcome back to Iquenos.

Formerly known as Iquenos: In Nomine Domini, there have been a good degree of changes in the world at large since the original concept from 2017 was conceived. This is an invite only game revolving around the characters of @TGM, @Lemons, @Matsuri, @Metanoia, @Raijinslayer, @Taka, and @Cello.

We’ll be revising (or creating) characters for the overall plot of a group of seven people coming together to ultimately set things right which initially went wrong. A cosmic band-aid for the world of Vildema-Sóma. New lore additions will accompany revisions and rewrites but overall the themes and mechanics will be generally the same. I hope we can be a bit more consistent as we carve a story out of this and I hope everyone will have a fun time doing it.
Vildema-Sóma's Burden

Many years ago, the people of Vildema-Sóma were united, cast together by a common will to embrace who they are and to bring upon a new renaissance to the seven cities through perilous adventure. The leader of the seven cities sat atop a throne, the descendant of a great hero who had forged an benevolent empire that benefited all. Behind the emperor stood two factions: the magi guilds that sought to uncover the truth of the world and the holy order that stood to protect the world from the forces of darkness. These factions, often in opposition, never betrayed the balance of power.

That is, until one of them did.

The holy order, the Status Ecclesiae, had betrayed the emperor in a sudden and strange act of ruthless fervor. Calling upon the will of the gods and changing the empire as well as the greater world forevermore. The faithful claimed that the emperor had fallen prey to the dark arts, a twisted magick that had corrupted the entire royal family. The truth was more insidious, but buried, as the leader of the Ecclesiae, the former Grand Inquisitor, coveted what the Scarlet Emperor held. The magi guilds resisted. The city of Iquenos, the cradle of the empire, became a hub for zealous oppression. Eventually, everything came to one final battle aboard the greatest airship that had ever flown–the Eileithyia. The magi guilds held a council, trying to coordinate a strategy against their longtime rivals and now heirs to the empire. Out of the shadows came inquisitors. A devastating victory for the inquisitors and the new status quo.

It has been thirteen years since that battle. The magi guilds are a whisper in the wind and the inquisition’s mission grows ever stronger. But perhaps there is hope in this new age that the dawn will come and save the world from destruction and despair…

…in fact, the oracles can hear the whispering of a change that is to come. Could it be?
Magic: The Power of the Gods

Stories say that Sol allowed mortals to tap into their latent ether to create magic to combat the demon king, Moros. Others say humans created their own destiny and tapped into the energy within them when protecting their tribes from the wilderbeasts of the ancient world. There are many stories such as these, but truly the only thing that matters is that the people of Vildema-Sóma found a way to harness such a power. The power of the soul.

Every single being on Vildema-Sóma has an ether–the aspect of their spirit that holds great power when transmuted into magic. Of these elements there are seven: air, earth, flame, storms, tides, light, and darkness. These are known within the seven cities as ventus, terra, ignis, fulgur, aqua, sanctus, and malum.

Unbeknownst to us, there has been a world between worlds, a dimensional cyberspace that persists within electronically transmitted data.

A Digital World.

A world that has become aware of our own. For how long? At what cost? And why?

These are all questions that have yet to be answered and perhaps they never will as long as Axion Bridge Technologies keeps quiet about their role in such a reality. For the average person, nobody knows. But for the digital world? It has already begun affecting our world, and in turn our world has been affecting it. It has been eight years since strange phenomena started to occur. When you were six years old you were touched by the digital world. Although you barely remember it, you were one of the eight who experienced a visage, a fabrication of two creatures not of this world. You might have thought it was a dream and forgotten about it, but the digital world did not forget you. And soon it will reach out for you once again.

In fact, that day is today.

Often called “mean” and “cold”, Miri has always been pretty ambivalent towards people.

Maybe if her big, important, and extremely rich family cared about her she’d treat people better. But it is largely due to her parents' hefty expectations and emotional distance that Miri found solace in academia. The things that fascinated her and interested her ended up being in those old encyclopedias in her mansion’s big library.

The rest goes like clockwork. She’s probably the smartest girl at her school and she’s only a 9th grader.

A sparkplug of optimism and good vibes, the only thing that can stop her is how little energy she can muster these days.

The long hours at the hospital have drained her. The ex-champion of the United States Middle School Chess Tournament thinks she’s not long for the world and she constantly fights with herself if it all matters; if god is punishing her for doing something bad.

But cancer comes for everyone. She just hopes hse can fight it without bankrupting her parents.

Zee’s family life has been pretty great since forever ago. His parents adopted him not long after he was born and raised him in Denver to the best of their abilities.

Unfortunately their abilities didn’t translate perfectly. In many respects Zee considers himself a “bad boy” and “outcast”. He’s never been outright cruel, but sometimes the line gets blurry when you’re having fun. He’s charismatic, but part of him is still there–the part of him that knows he should do the right thing.

C H A R A C T E R C O N C E P T:

Since awakening strange cosmic powers from a device called the Psyche-Magnetron, Carol Danvers has done her best to do right by the people of Earth–and anyone in the greater cosmos that doesn’t have someone to protect them. It’s been a tough job, but it has been her duty.

The years since the Chitauri Invasion of Earth have not been easy. After helping fend off the alien invasion, Carol found herself as one of the central members of a defensive initiative that would come to be known as the Avengers. However, as the years would come and go Carol would find herself struggling to deal with her own mental alacrity and her role as a protector of Earth when her Kree heritage dragged her several galaxies away at a time, dealing with crisis after crisis. Some of them inherent to the danger of Earth and some of them not. It begs the question as she gets older, a question that has been asked by her friends in the United States military. How can she be the protector of Earth when she’s three galaxies away solving an intergalactic crisis or fending off a cosmic horror?

***

The last time I played Carol Danvers she was mostly relegated to Earth stories and I’ve been in a particular science fiction sort of mood in recent weeks. As I’m getting back into a writing groove I’m hoping this won’t come across too clumsy as well. I’ve looked at some of the modern rewrites with Carol between the 616 and MCU as well as thought about how I’d interpret some of her rogues, their space empires, and everything inbetween. As it appears we are getting a few space-faring heroes this’ll also allow me to not be completely isolated going forward.

C H A R A C T E R N O T E S:

I'm not particularly good most of the time at planning fifteen arcs in advance, so consider that most of the below will be constantly developing as ideas come-and-go and as they happen in my posts throughout the role-play.

The following is something I just decided to draw up, haha:

The Overhead

Mass Effect: Harpocrates is a series of stories set in the Mass Effect universe starting in 2183, three years before the devastating invasion of the Milky Way by the threat that will come to be known as the Reapers. Optimistically, the storylines presented will gradually take us through and past the events of the Reaper Invasion.

Players will create individuals who have been recruited as part of a response team tasked with operations that range from search and rescue, investigation, subterfuge, and more.
How Did We Get Involved In This?

This is the question that all six members of the Harpocrates Initiative will be asking themselves sooner or later.

Your character is a specialist. A person who has spent their life trying to figure things out and as a byproduct obtained an assortment of skills that make them one of the very best at what they do and generally being the best at what they do gets guns pointed at them. Often. For one reason or another, your character is either in dire straits or consistently unhappy in whatever that current situation they are in and are receptive to getting a job offer–a discreet, low information job offer in their inbox from the ExoGeni Corporation, a interstellar company headquartered on Eden Prime. It is a curious one, given the peculiarities of the offer to meet with the chief CEO of the company as soon as possible. It doesn’t take long for them to be on route to Eden Prime within days of the message.

The offer, as it turns out, is on a “need-to-know” basis. NDA’s are signed. ExoGeni has a dire situation about an attacked facility of theirs. They need a response team that goes beyond their current operatives and one that is away from the eyes of accountability of both the Systems Alliance and any other governing body. Your character, being an independent contractor, is offered the job of a lifetime but it is also riskier than anything they’ve ever encountered before. Something about the job compels them to say yes beyond the pay. It isn’t long before they are suiting up for a job with seven other people. Seven other specialists.

And so it begins.
Operations Log

To Be Determined!
Character Sheet

The Character Sheet should be pretty straightforward. Only change the [color=yellow] tag with your corresponding character color when creating your character application. When posted in here for review, post in the OOC in a hider or it will be automatically rejected.

Characters should be skilled individuals with flaws. I am not looking for complete amoral psychopaths but well-rounded characters who have the ability to grow with the role-play and the decided cast of characters. if you have any questions regarding the content of the sections of the sheet please post the question here in the OOC or send me a message privately if needed. Additionally, characters will be limited to the following races for story convienances: Human, Asari, Turian, Salarian, Quarian, Drell, and Krogan. ExoGeni is not a “Humanity First” organization, but they are a human corporation so keep that in mind if you want. It won't effect acceptance.

Some useful resources include the wiki's summarization of the timeline, classifications, and weapons.

Echelon 7: The Deviation Complex is a roleplay about survival and the lengths you’ll go to assure your own destiny.

Some time ago you were just a kid in the United States, figuring out your identity and dealing with the standard problems of high school. If not for a routine medical exam you would probably still be there, blissfully unaware of the mysterious organization that kidnapped you from whatever city you were from. The tests say you are a deviant, a unique genetic classification that makes you interesting to the organization and their slew of doctors. Doctors who have never–not once–given you any sort of information.

Your DNA, your deviancy from the norm, has unlocked something within you. The chemicals they inject you with might be to blame, or maybe it's something else. What you know is you have some weird power. There are a small group of kids like you. Everyone has awakened a different latent ability. All of you feel helpless, constantly being treated like lab rats and test monkeys. What exactly is this organization after? You are held against your will and the doctors won’t let you go.

Until today.

A Tenuous Peace

--
Interstellar Combat Weapons

--
The Perseus Academic Institute

--
Chronology of Events

2511 (216 Years Ago)

Mars refuses to take Earthborn refugees following a crisis on the homeworld. Mars and Earth begin a conflict that hinges on war. Earth calls back its colonial battleships from Terra Nova, Ares, and Canis Prime leaving the colonies to largely fend for themselves.

2527 (200 Years Ago)

Canis Prime secedes from the New Solar Republic and forms The Ascendancy in references to its goals to ascend beyond the confines of the republic and humankind. Following the Ascendancy's lead, eventually other farspace colonies group together in other factions.

2670 (57 Years Ago)

A invasion fleet comprised of Ascendants invade the Sirius System, sparking a war of conquest against the Terran Federation. This becomes known as the first Ascendant-Federation War.

2685 (42 Years Ago)

The war ends unofficially, when The Ascendancy and The Federation are attacked by a once thought neutral faction, the Cassian Empire.

2707 (20 Years Ago)

The War with Cassia ends. The Ascendancy and Federation find peace in the universe. For a time.

2711 (16 Years Ago)

The Federation attacks an Ascendant stronghold, reigniting conflict among the two factions. This begins the second Ascendant-Federation War.

2717 (10 Years Ago)

Operation Daedalus occurs. Commander Anua's special task force of valkyries attacks the Ascendancy Supercarrier, The Apedemak, after it launches a full scale attack on the Federation Reserve Fleet. Valkyries defending the F.R.F. struggle against the seemingly endless stream of starfighters and mecha. Considerable Federation losses are overshadowed by the destruction of the Apedemak. The key to the Federation victory against The Apedemak are pilots Kalian Cyris and Stella Aryos who become known as war heroes for their actions.

2720 (7 Years Ago)

Three years after Operation Daedalus, Kalian and his partner find themselves in what would become their final in-suit battle. The Ascendancy, refusing to back down despite considerable losses, hopes they can change the tides of the war. The Federation victory would lead to negotiations for the war to finally end.

2725 (2 Years Ago)

The Perseus Academic Institute re-opens its doors to Federation citizens who wish to get a higher education in piloting, engineering, and other fields. Secretly, it is the testing ground for a new generation of Valkyries.
Important Historical Figures

Commander Minella Anua (2676-2717)
One of the most decorated pilots in Federation history, Minella Anua was one of the first pilots to find herself in a Valkyrie. With her partner, Ardo Yisck, she survived and secured victory for the Federation against the Cassian Empire. Later assigned to a special Task Force against the Ascendants in her later years she devised countless plans to push the Ascendants out of Federation space. Her death in Operation Daedalus led her to many posthumous accolades.

Admiral Kalian Cyris (2688- )

Commander Malus Vriland (2695- )
The youngest pilot ever to earn the Medal of Freedom, Malus is often regarded as one of the most skilled pilots of his generation. Part of Project Valkyries storied first generation of pilots, Malus continues to stand for his values. His partner, Mimi Delka, are uncertain of the peace in the galaxy but are taking the time to focus on their respective families on Terra Nova.
