Akeno

They were children, so they needed to stay with the other orcs in the camp for now. Even though those orcs had sent a bunch of children like them into the woods to hunt dangerous animals, with no weapons, no training and no support. If they survived then great, if not then they weren’t worth much anyway. Not exactly the most supportive environment to be born in to; Akeno really did have to wonder if it was worth going back there if they were able to succeed at this hunt.

Maybe the orcs would be more helpful if they proved themselves; give them weapons and armour and training. Or maybe they would just send them out again the next day, treat them as expendable resources until they expired or lived long enough to boss around the next generation. Or got strong enough to be able to push back. If they were able to survive out here, find food, fend off the threats of wild animals, wouldn’t it be better to just leave and make their own little camp with their other former humans? They were only children physically after all.

Well, it wasn’t like Akeno had ever had to fend for herself. Neither option sounded especially great for her long term survival.

“Fine.”

Akeno accepted the rock from the other orc, felt its weight settle into her palm and considered it for a second or two. She shook her head then dropped it to the ground with a sigh. “I’ll do better without a weapon.”

First she’d see what kind of threats they were dealing with, and then she’d figure out what to do next. Akeno looked over at the other two orcs with them, the ones she would be fighting with; there was no way of knowing if they could fight, since they were as new to their bodies as she was hers any tell-tale signs like build were erased. She knew she could strike the killing blow… probably, but she wasn’t sure if they could; so she’d approach this with that in mind.

“I’ll get the attention of one of them, you two grab it while it’s distracted and hold it still… I’ll kill it.”

With that said, Akeno turned and walked to the edge of the clearing in the direction they had heard the cawing coming from. She stopped before reaching the underbrush and spent a moment trying to find a way to get through without causing too much of a ruckus, before deciding just to start pushing through it. If she was going to be a distraction then making a bunch of noise would only help, after all.

Lazash

Hmm. A fair plan of attack for their hunt, given the multiple threats around. No desire to pursue the Jackalope due to the imminent threat in front of them, which made logical sense. A familiar feeling bubbled up within the Runt as she took up her rock temporarily set down her stick, the anticipation rippling through her new body's muscles and tendons and bones. It had been some time since she'd felt like this, but there was no sense in getting too excited or jumpy either. Even so, she could almost smell that salty sea breeze once more, feeling the hot sand under her toes as the rays of the cruel sun beat down, and feel the neck of one of those blasted 'normal' chickens from back when in her hands.

Yet the rejection of a proper weapon? It brought a brief frown to Lazash's face, but she didn't say anything about the matter as she readied herself in a proper running stance for a burst of quick speed and her hands gripped her sharp rock with a two-handed approach and a well-practiced grip.

Yes, they were children. Adults in child bodies, reborn but carrying more over into their new lives than most could hope for. And to what end? What experiment was this supposed to be on the part of those two spirits they'd met along the way into their new lives? Hmm. It mattered not right now either way, as they had to survive before they think about or could do anything else.

And that she understood as clear as crystal.

As Akeno pushed through the bushes before them and went through, beyond which lied an unknown amount of their prey, Lazash would finally dart off as fast as she could move forward into and through the bushes to the left of where Akeno had entered. Her intent was to bolt through and get the element of, somewhat perhaps, surprise as the martial artist got the attention of the Elwet over there. However-

As Akeno grit her teeth and decided to simply burst through the underbrush, she found herself coming face to beak with a large, full bodied chicken bearing not only draconic scales, but pointed antlers and perhaps the meanest gaze ever possessed by a flightless bird. There were four of them in the clearing, pecking at the ground or preening themselves--and every single one of them turned their gaze on the Orc Runt that had just barged into their midst. They were roughly twice as big as any chicken Akeno might've encountered in her lifetime--standing somewhere between 30 and 36 inches tall on average, weighing at least twenty pounds a piece.

The one in front of her immediately screamed and jumped back, buffeting her face with its wings as it did so. The next closest released a loud cry of its own, this one of warning rather than surprise, and that seemed to move the other two to more direct action. The one furthest from Akeno turned and started to book it for the nearest bush. And the remaining third member of this little flock opened its beak wide to release a blast like a firework, a small flaming mass that traveled towards the Runt like a baseball pitch--!
???

With her slight delay in pursuing after Akeno, Lazash would burst through as the Elwet had their attention on the former. She saw the one jumping back from Akeno as it screamed, and heard the warning squawk of the next closest Elwet hit her ears. She saw the third launching a fiery spark out, and the fourth try to run away. To Lazash, then, it was a mere moment to choose her target before things devolved further and she lost too much speed after bursting in to do anything useful. She had to commit to a target, and the original plan wasn't really so viable in the heat of the moment.

The closest one to her, from the direction she was coming in from at least, was the one launching the fiery attack at Akeno. Without pausing, then, Lazash darted into the third Elwet as fast as she could and would slam her body weight behind the primitive knife of sorts as she tried to drive it at the chicken's side and likewise into its center of mass as hard as she could. About where a heart could maybe roughly be expected maybe, given the peculiar size of these creatures at least. She hoped she was getting this somewhat right.

As the creature's focus was on attacking Akeno, it seemed, she could make a move to take advantage of that with her speed and rock and what body weight she had as a mere Runt. Hit it from its side, rather than charge from the front, and make it pay for its lapse in attention-span in these moments.

If she could knock this thing over and stick it with her rock in the process, or at least do something to it with her charge at all to stun or leave it shocked, she'd do her best to wrap her arms around its neck and grab it as tightly as her little body could muster before trying to twist it and break it as she could before it could get around to her (hopefully). If all else failed, and she could grab the neck at least, she would do so in such a case and still grip it just as tightly and with the same neck-breaking intent to boot.

Grunthor just watched Akeno as she clearly tried to think of something to say. He hadn't thought her weird, since he hadn't paid her any attention in the Brood Pit. Her actions were normal in his mind so he didn't concentrate on that subconsciously. The normal Orc Runts and the adults were the main focus since their mannerisms were so different. Loud, guttural, violent, and prone to anger. While he waited to see if she'd speak he glanced at a Jackaloupe out of the corner of his eye, without a ranged weapon beyond hurling a rock they would never get one. Or a snare trap, but he didn't know how to make one he just knew they existed.

More younglings came out of the woods-line, a pair of female orcs. How could anyone tell at this age? Even now they had more feminine facial features. Why did he know that? He was always reading faces and taking note of certain aspects, like old injuries that could be hammered into. Still they chattered amongst themselves, the whole gaggle of greenskins were all human before. What good is an experiment with just one test subject, right? He questioned the Goddess, doubting she would answer.

There was talk ot hunting and keeping what they got without returning. That was a terrible idea! Sure no one would come looking, but there were going to be far more than poison snake cats, fire chickens, horny rabbits, giant rodents, and mobile jello in this world. A caw from chickens erupted from the forest and soon a plan was made without his input, or confirmation that he would even work with them. "Some prep would have been nice since these bodies are so weak..." He muttered before following along.

Akeno barged through the bushes and came face to feather with four of the fireball spitting fowls. One was surprised and lunged back, one gave a warning cry, one made to escape, and one spat out a fireball. Zippy flames but nothing he could do about that. Lazash bolted in from the left soon after Akeno got the Elwet's attention. So he circled around from the right. A moment and Lazash was going for the one spitting fire, which would draw attention away from his position....probably. Digging his lil toes into the dirt he launched himself out of the brush.

Those stringy legs pumped with the speed of a kid on a sugar high as he went to tackle the Elwet that had given the original warning cry. Assuming he got the drop on it and brought it to the ground his Sharp Rock would be smashed down to the birds horned head and feathered neck to cause as much vital damage as possible.

Though the Elwet was much heavier than a normal chicken, it was still smaller and lighter than the Runt who came charging at it with a stone knife. Though Lazash's initial plan succeeded, and she slammed into the monster from the side, as its feet left the ground there wasn't enough resistance from its body weight to really drive her sharp stone home. She pierced a thick layer of feathers and drew blood, but somehow her instincts warned that this wouldn't be fatal. As they tumbled together, the beast's wings and feet flailed wildly at her--and its sharp talons raked her soft belly, leaving several slices that burned with pain, before she finally came up on top and managed to wrap her tiny hands around the fire breathing neck!

But now, despite weighing more than it and perhaps being stronger, the Elwet proved that it, too, was stronger than its size hinted. Clucking furiously, it began to scramble and try to run--with Lazash still on its back! Though her grip tightened every moment and the bird's eyes bulged from lack of oxygen, it simply poured every ounce of adrenaline and survival instinct into a mad charge for freedom--

Grunthor put his whole body weight into a charge much like Lazash, but whereas her goal had been to pierce a feathered heart his, from the start, had been to get his string-bean arms around the crowing terror and bear both their weights to the earth. In this he succeeded--though most of the Elwet's body was hugged against his chest. This left its beaked head free, and even as he buried his face into its...surprisingly soft chest, he could feel the pointed appendage drawing a pattern of bloodied dots all over his bald head, seeking his eyes!

But up came Grunthor's arm, and down came his sharp rock! He missed the first shot but clipped one of the antlers, and now that he knew where its body was in space alongside him the second blow hit its mark! The Elwet cried out once more as one of its eyes was blinded forever by the chiseled stone edge! In this moment of weakness Grunthor could secure his mount and finish the creature off--but if he raised his head to do so, he'd see another twenty-something pounds of feathered fury, carrying a further weight of exactly 1 Lazash, coming straight at him in a mad charge for freedom--!

It took all of a split second for things to go awry.

The presence of four Elwets in a single instance did not do anything to change Esfir's plan. It was still logical to have three of the runts dogpile one bird, killing it quickly. They could track the others afterwards, if they ran. They could focus down another, if they fought. Four would become three, three would become two, two would become one, one would become none. But they didn't do that, did they? She began to question how human they really were.

Her hand flexed, her eyes flickered. They all lined up well, well enough that she could freeze them all. Three birds, three runts. How much could she eat in one sitting? The martial artist, knocked back by a surprise beating of wings. The gawky male, tangled in a messy grapple. The one who spoke to the warrior, dragged along for a ride. If she ate them too, would she gain their gifts?

Unclenching, clenching. A fist from within that swirled with the essence of a blizzard.

...

It would take too long to eat them all in one sitting.

Her fist opened, two hands grasping upon the stick she had, and Esfir leapt in, interposing herself between the pinned Elwet and the charging one. One end of the stick she thrust into the ground, the other end angled towards the one that dragged the talkative one. Bullets had been expensive. Bows required practice. But a hunting spear had been something that even her brothers learned how to make, and with proper planning, they'd have venison or boar on the table that night. She had no particular delusions about the amount of strength she had, but perhaps its momentum will be enough to impale itself upon her stick. Chicken bones broke easily, though the flesh itself may not be pierced by such a blunt instrument.

And if that couldn't be accomplished either, then so be it. She'd have given time enough for the runt behind her to finish off his quarry.

How Did You-

Ah, no that was pain she was feeling for sure. Her abdomen had been clawed at for sure, and it hurt as much as she'd expect it to. A fair punishment for what she'd just done.

But why hadn't she charged the Elwet that was in front of Akeno?

Simple. She would have been in the path of the stupid fireball-thing the other one spat out. Not that anyone else cared about that fact.

Yet attacking it freed up the others to attack the one in front of their resident martial artist. In that sense they could get one down, she kept this one busy as she continued to grip as tightly as her body could manage around its skinny neck, and then maybe their self-appointed group leader could do something to the others hopefully. Sure it wasn't a prefect execution, sure, but it was certainly not the end at least.

Hopefully it all wasn't going to get any-

"Grunthor put his whole body weight into a charge much like Lazash, but whereas her goal had been to pierce a feathered heart his, from the start, had been to get his string-bean arms around the crowing terror and bear both their weights to the earth. -...Going To Go?

...Oh for the love of-

Clutching even tighter and tighter for her life, Lazash sought to crush the neck of the bird with all her might now as it tried to run for freedom. She'd pull up and use her whole body to crush that neck if she had to! But she wouldn't do anythign that might cause her to fall off or get caught under its feet or such again. The goal? Kill the stupid thing as quickly as she could, and then IF she managed to kill it stop and use the stupid stone from its body to help attack another bird someone else was trying to deal with so they could gang up on at least one stupid bird. If she even got that far.

She wouldn't make excuses for this one, but she sure as hell wouldn't try to die here and now either. Again. So soon.

What a dream. What a bad dream. Yet it wasn't one that he could ever wake from, was it? His hands were smaller. Much smaller, and a whole lot greener. His head was clearer, and his eyes took in the oddly familiar pit around him. He felt as if he should be adapting to his new senses, but it all fit like a glove. Even the budding tusks protruding from his lower lip didn't feel like a bother, and he was confident he could chew on anything as he always had before. The world was so much bigger than before, and the crude settlement looming above him only further impressed this new world he was in.

Mukh. Brood pit. Auguz. Tatzelwurm. Eltwet. All words that he knew despite not knowing them. All sights he was accustomed to despite how new they were. And above them all there was one thing stuck deep within him: Rik. His name. It was the name of the child both nervous and enthusiastic about his first hunt, and the name Federico would heed to whenever spoken. Rik. Federico. Rik. Federico. How odd. He felt like he'd perk up to both, despite how uneasy he'd felt at first. He felt that both his past and present self were now one and whole, memories seamlessly coalescing with one another.

He balled his small, green fist and looked around him to the rest of the runts. All these kids, and he was about the same height as them. Just another child. It was this that made him realize that his old life was behind of him. A sobering thought to have, sure; he still felt some regret over his most recent acts as Federico. But this was a clean slate. A new beginning. A chance to leave the shackles of his brother behind. A chance to prove to himself just how far he could go on his own.

Rik moved into the woods from the get go, having chosen an Elwet for his quest. They were about the right size to be wrestled down, and he felt like he'd gain a bit of merit with his elders if he was able to take it down by himself. Who knows, maybe he'd be allowed a sizeable portion later? The thought of some chicken for dinner made his mouth water, and it wasn't that long until he heard those cries. Elwets. They weren't far. His hand went for his rock, gripping it by the blunt side, and he began to stalk through the foliage in the hopes of catching the creatures off guard. It'd be easier to kill them if they never knew he was coming, after all.

Akeno

Akeno hadn’t expected the creatures to be directly in front of her once she emerged from the underbrush. Maybe she should have, but in her haste she hadn’t considered it as an option and for her lack of care she received a face full of feathers and a deafening cawing in her ears.

Closing her eyes and batting away from feathers, she opened them again just in time to see one of the other chicken-beasts open its beak to spit a small fireball in her direction. It wasn’t large, but then again neither was she and small or not it was still fire; she had time to dodge, but instinct prevailed and muscle memory controlled her response as she swept an arm from waist to above her head to block the attack the way she would an incoming punch. The motion was smooth, easy, driven by her skill which had active unconsciously as soon as she drew on her martial arts training.

She felt her arm burn. Pain engulfing a baseball-sized patch of skin just above her wrist as the ball of fire seared away at her. Rather than dwell on it, Akeno pushed down the feeling and lashed out at the chicken directly in front of her instead; her left foot came up, hips rotating as she swung her leg into the creature’s side as hard as she could. The hit felt strong, stronger than normal somehow, but as she felt her kick impact the soft feathers and fat body of the Elwet she knew that it wouldn’t be enough.

The legs, the neck, the head. Akeno didn’t have a knife or a spear or anything that could stab though the flesh to reach the organs, so she needed to target the parts of the body that wouldn’t be able to absorb the shock so well. Both feet back on the ground, Akeno hopped back from the chicken and took up a proper stance as she awaited its next move.

Vola

Current Location: Orc Camp
Current Activity: Working with Gren @Lucius Cypher to steal the stone hatchet

As the sound of Gren’s stomping reached her ears, Vola took one last breath to brace herself before cautiously peaking around the edge of the tent. In spite of the seriousness of the situation and all that they were risking, a small grin stretched over her face – talk about seizing the day! Besides, it was pretty smart of Gren to approach them the way that he did, if they were in a bragging mood they could actually get some pretty decent information out of it. Hopefully she wont end up messing up on her end…

Keeping a wary eye on the orcs assembled around the campfire, her hand slowly and quietly reached out to wrap around the stone hatchet, picking it up as carefully as possible before ducking back around the tent. The entire time she kept herself ready to bolt at the first sign of their victims catching on to their heist. Once the axe was in her hands though, she started moving away, just barely keeping herself from an outright sprint. Running would draw unwanted attention, and she didn’t want any of the other orcs to be able to point a finger to any suspicious Runts if asked. Instead, she employed every bit of the stealth that she possessed to duck and weave unseen through the camp, trying to look as casual and unsuspicious as she could until she can manage to reach their meeting point. Just because she’s trying to look casual and at ease, doesn’t mean that she actually is though. The second that it seems that one of the older orcs even looks at her funnily, she’s ready to throw the casual act out of the window and bolt as fast as her little Runt legs can carry her.

Duram

While he had been mostly preoccupied with his thought on the possible biology and behaviour of the tatzelwurms that inhabited the nearby forest, Duram noticed the poor condition of the village. Though he supposed that it was rather homey to the rough and tumble orcs that built it, managing to survive and seemingly thrive despite the primitive supplies. It was only reinforced by the behaviour of its inhabitants, the grunts being especially bothersome. It wasn't even an active decision to completely ignore Builge and his school yard taunts, as he continued on beyond the palisades.

The land outside of the camp was nearly indescribable in its beauty. With clear skies and lush foliage not to far off, only to be offset by the majestic if dramatic mountainside. Though Duram didn't have much time to enjoy the scenery before being faced with the consequences of his impulsive decision to sing. Accepting the fist bump, he was rather taken aback by not only the confirmation that Agar, or rather Johnathan, was also brought to this world after passing but also his blunt manner.

"Alexei," He said while scratching the back of his head. "Well I guess its Duram now. 25 amateur zoologist and animal behaviourist from Colorado. I was shot at work." While most was said with a smile, he couldn't help but rub his chest as he mentioned his death, phantom pain flaring up sharply at the memory. Even so, the young orc understood the wisdom in Agar's words.

"We should keep an eye ou-" The rest of his word were swallowed by the loud crack of a tree branch and before he could think about it, his body was turning in the direction of the sound. Thankfully Agar had a similar thought and motioned toward the disturbed birds.

"Other than checking that out? I was hoping to study some of the creatures here. Might be easier to hunt, if we know how they behave." Was the last thing he said before quickly making his way toward the action.

Agar

// So this is what hell is like >> Into the forest //

Agar starred at the other for a moment pondering the information given. ”my condolences.” Looking back to the edge of the forest it didn’t look like many of the others were heading in the exact same route they were judging by the tracks in the dirt and small trails cut through the grass. Looking back to his new friend with a smile both of them beginning to move toward the sound in the forest.

“A few ground rules with me, I don’t mind if ya disagree with me. Juz don get in ma way, I intend to stalk and learn then kill no matter how cute and fuzzy it is, ill only disengage if I thinks wes cant take it. Slow and steady if its too dangerous I sugjest you listen to me and back out.”

A few simple things he had more but he figured he could teach the lad later after he knew they would mesh well with him. Things like abbreviations, hand signals, and tactical movements, he might even think about teaching some battle strategy to the others if they were worth it. For now his thoughts on the tribe wasn’t good with his master plan being to stay here till he is strong enough and has enough information to leave the tribe.

Until then the rumors he heard about the scouts sounded like they were his best bet after growing a bit stronger. Sneaking around wasn’t his original thought process but it should give him a bit more independent growing from the others. So far he wasn’t sure just quite what this world had to offer but being able to survive was the first step.

Agar stopped for a moment in front of the trees edge and before entering tried his best to activate Field Scan I mentally before entering. This way he would know if it cost anything to use this skill. Speaking in a whisper heading for the break in the forest, “Low and slow, no need for rush.” Stepping through the forest under canopy slowly and as quietly as he could keeping on alert for any strange or aggressive animals or sounds.

"ACH!"

Just as Ushnekh went to make himself scarce-- a rope-like body suddenly dropped onto his head!

The runt staggered back from the force of the impact; barely keeping himself from falling on his ass as the taste of iron filled his mouth. Gathering his bearings with a violent shake of his head, Ushnekh took several steps back; lowering himself into a fighting stance. Though the little orc wasn't averse to taking hits to dish out his own; he'd heard that Tatzelwurms had poison, and testing the strength of said poison was NOT something he was keen on doing.

As the snake-cat-monster lunged toward his leg, Ushnekh let out a bellow as he swung his stick at the creature's head.

"Uh, hi! I'm gunna go out an hunt! But did ya say sumthin bout a cave in da north? What were ya doing up dere? Were you fightin monstahs, or maybe huntin?"

“Eh?” The adult orcs seemed surprised that Gren had even approached them, much less started talking to them, and they glanced at each other as if to say ‘is this Runt one of yours?’ Luckily, Vola stayed further back and out of sight, so none of the three noticed her before they turned back to Gren. The one in particular that he tried to butter up simply snorted and spat a disgusting glob of phlegm into the fire, where it hissed.

“I was scoutin’, is all. Warchief wants to make sure ain’t nothing around here to catch the drop on us.”

"You look really strong, yeah! You musta killed lots before. I wanna know how to be strong like you, so when I go huntin I'll get something good for tha camp!" As Gren showcased his elite skills, the three orcs sat there for a moment—then burst out into raucous laughter.

“Aye, th’ li’l bugger ain’t bad, eh!?” chortled one, nudging the other. “A real terror, innit?!”

“Lookie ‘ere, Runt!” The one in the middle suddenly reached back behind his hip, and drew out a large, drop-tipped cleaver. It was made of considerably old and worn iron, but the edge had been taken care of well—the weapon’s body had a roughness and spots of rust to it, but that thin, ragged white line looked perfectly serviceable. “Before you worry about gettin’ tough, worry about stayin’ alive!” He flourished the cleaver before symbolically drawing the back of the metal across his own throat. “If ya’s get back from yer hunt, you’re still gonna have to train with Auguz! ‘E’s a tough bastard ‘e is, and ain’t nuthin’ makes ‘im happier than putting a runt like you in yer place! Just ask that fatty, Builge!”

“Ah, das right, Builge was in da brood afore dis one, wasn’t he?” chuckled the third orc. “No wonder he’s been a right li’l shite lately.”

The three commenced to discussing whether it’d be worth the verbal abuse from Auguz or the Warchief if they were to go kick Builge’s tower out from under him, or if they could get away with just throwing rocks at him. It didn’t take long at all for them to forget Gren entirely…

…In other words, it looked like he and Vola had made a clean getaway.

A knapped and sharpened stone blade has been driven through the hole in such a way that impacts will push it further into the handle. Further security is provided by some cordage and sticky tree sap. At your current size, it is considered a two-handed, heavy weapon.

Akeno blocked the fireball, Lazash tackled the flame-spitter, Grunthor wrestled the screeching bird, and Esfir pondered how no plan ever survives first contact with the enemy. Lazash was dragged along as she tried to strangle her wounded prey, Grunthor suffered half a dozen vicious pecks as he beat his victim with a rock, Esfir leaped into action, and Akeno reacted on a sense of muscle memory that still didn’t quite fit with this new body. But as her hips torqued, for an instant the kick felt “right,” and slammed into the Elwet with a satisfying thud! The creature crowed in pain—and one of its wings suddenly drooped at an unnatural angle. The beast was knocked off its feet but quickly recovered, scrambling and flapping away—right towards the rest of the chaotic mess.

The bird carrying Lazash ran into Esfir’s stick just like a charging boar was supposed to, and the impact struck it dead center in the body—it gave a hoarse squawk, as if the breath was knocked out of it. Its charge was halted, jerking Lazash around, but she kept a tight hold and with all the fury that only a creature desperate to kill another can generate, twisted with both hands. There was a single instant of resistance—CRACK.

The fire-spitting bird suddenly thrashed and kicked in one last death throe, spinning in circles on the ground. Its dangerous claws and powerful wings created a flurry of pain for the two orc females! What was more, the injured Elwet Akeno had been fighting now crashed into them from behind!

Assuming Grunthor kept weathering the beak trying to pierce his bald head and flailing at the creature with his rock, he would feel his opponent’s body suddenly go rigid after one heavy blow, and then limp. Though his wounds bled and stung like nobody’s business and made him look like hell, as long as he avoided getting hit in the eye they wouldn’t be seriously debilitating…but then again, open wounds meant a greater chance of infection, and nothing about the Orc camp suggested they had much in the way of medicines…

As Rik moved among the trees and the underbrush, carefully picking his way across the root-strewn and uneven forest floor, he would hear sudden movement headed right for him. But just as he readied himself, the brown-and-white-blur shot out of the bushes and barreled right past him, too swift for him to react to! He got a decent look at the blurred figure, at least—it was one of those rabbits with antlers, the Jackalope. Even compared to regular rabbits back on earth, the thing was bloody fast.

But almost as soon as the critter had disappeared into the brush again, he heard the calls of the Elwets—and they were definitely not happy about something. If Rik chose to investigate, he would also hear the sounds and cries of battle. Had more Runts come out this way? There were definitely multiple Elwets; dare he risk taking them on by himself?

Before such a decision could be made, however, something else came charging through the bushes. This one wasn’t near as fast as the Jackalope, and that beast had already put Rik on edge. So with his reflexes already revved up, he had the upper hand as an Elwet came almost blindly stumbling out of the bushes right in front of him, horned head turning back from looking over its shoulder…

As Duram and Agar began moving in the direction of Ushnekh’s testing ground—though of course, they had yet to discover that the other Runt was there—they moved away from the gravelly slopes and into the dense treeline. Agar paused, and with a cautious crouch tried to summon up his newfound power—or the Skill, as this world seemed to refer to it.

Duram wouldn’t be able to see or feel it, but from Agar’s perspective, a neon-green circle spread out from his body through his feet, expanding until it covered the entire range of the Skill and then rebounding off every living thing in the vicinity. Trees and other plantlife caused a reaction, but if he didn’t look with his eyes and only “felt” the effects, it was as if they were soft, semi-transparent images. Instead, the “living creatures” specified by the skill description he’d seen began to glow with a soft green "flame," the size of which seemed to indicate their general size or strength.

A Dire Rat was currently moving away from the two runts, stealthy dashing underneath the brush to their left. It had little interest in them, as one might expect of a rodent, and simply wanted to get away from the bigger shapes crashing through the underbrush. To their right and perhaps a few yards into the forest, there was a tree whose outline included something vibrant and round…was that one of those Leppa Fruits, then? It glowed separately from the main tree’s body, up in the branches.

But straight ahead of them, at the very edge of the skill’s range, Agar picked up a much larger and somehow familiar signal—it had to mean that another of the Runts was out here. And though the two were overlapping, somehow the Field Scan could differentiate between two separate creatures. From the chaotic way the signals moved, it seemed like the larger life-sign was under attack! If it was indeed a Runt, what could they be fighting? And should he and Duram intervene?

Moving backwards along with his attack proved to be the right choice thanks to Ushnekh’s instincts. The Tatzelwurm’s jaws snapped shut on empty air, but before it could regather itself for another lunge it was smacked in the face by a piece of rough wood. The creature’s catlike claws slashed at the stick, slicing a deep notch into it and knocking it away. But then the Orc Runt did something quite unexpected—Very, very rarely did any of them have magic at this young of an age. But Ushnekh did!

“[Earth Wave]!” Somehow, shouting the skill made it feel…stronger. But after already using it once that morning, Ushnekh felt a great deal of energy drain out of him-—he might be able to use it just once more, something deep inside his new body told him.

The Tatzelwurm was assaulted by a rolling wave of dirt and debris, slamming into it like a moving wall! The earth itself seemed to lift the creature and toss it on a low trajectory, where it bounced once upon impact. The monster’s long body thrashed and writhed as it struggled to right itself—a fight like this wasn’t worth it to the ambush predator, and as soon as it had its bearings it was going to make a mad dash for the brush! Would Ushnekh be fast enough, or capable enough, to finish it off!?

Akeno

The kick was more effective than Akeno had anticipated, knocking it clear off its feet and seemingly injuring or even breaking one of the bird’s wings, but like she had expected it wasn’t enough to put it down. Fatal or not, the creature apparently didn’t want to try being hit like that again and as soon as it was back on its feet it was running away from her and straight towards the backs of the other orcs.

She had been expecting another attack, counting on it even, so Akeno was caught a little flat-footed when it ran instead. Nonetheless, she began to chase after it, hot on the bird’s heels as it fled and flailed its way right into the tangle of bodies.

A prompt appeared in the corner of her vision telling her that the rest of the Elwet’s were either dead or had run away, meaning this was the last one left. Before it could recover and try to run again, Akeno leapt towards it, trying to mount its back and she reached out to grab hold of one of its antler-things. Holding its head in place and with her body now over the Elwet, Akeno raised her other arm above her head and brought her elbow down as hard as she could on the top of the creatures head.

Then she did it again.

And again.

And again.

Until it stopped moving or it threw her off.

"As Akeno leaped after the fleeing monster, she almost landed right on top of it. At the same time, she grabbed one of the fowl beast's antlers, and using that for leverage she put all her weight behind each strike! The first elbow to the back of its head stunned the already disoriented creature, and it crashed to the ground before they reached the tangled pile of other runts and fiery chickens. The second came down with enough force to crack the horn where she held it. The third made a deepier, meatier sound, and Akeno felt bone give way under the strike as the horn came off in her hand. The Elwet's screeches ceased, and its legs feebly kicked the air slower and slower.

The enemies were vanguished!

As the Runts lay there, some still on top of their prey and all catching their breath, the forest around them was quiet...at least for the moment."

It had been a scramble near the end, the thrashing of a dying beast leaving its mark upon her flesh, but the Elwet had been stopped at the end. All the Elwets had been stopped, then slain, leaving nothing more than dead meat.

Sixty pounds of dead meat. Luxurious, by all means, even if there was little time to celebrate it. After all, one last Elwet had escaped, leaving deep gouges in the dirt where it had scrambled away. She would have to revise what her memories told her. These were creatures that were violent, yes, but cowardly as well. Territorial, but willing to abandon both territory and kin for the personal survival. Future plans would have to adjust for that. For the time being, however?

There would have to be delegation.

"Good work," she said. Gesturing towards Lazash, she pointed first to the patch of smouldering grass and dirt that the Elwet's fireball had left upon the terrain, then towards Grunthor. "You two stay here and watch our kill. Stoke a fire. Rub some spit and dirt into your wounds." Another gesture, this time towards Akeno. The horn looked like a more reliable weapon than a sharp rock or a long stick. "You go with me. We'll pursue the one that ran for two hundred paces, running. If there's no more sighting, we return. Then, we cook and eat, as four."

A firm nod.

"It will be good, to learn how much one must eat to digest a creature."

It would be better, if they had the ingredients to make a soup, but her hands were already filled with fortune.

Gren

Location: Forests
Quest: Hunt for Food!
Current Activity: Gathering and Traveling through the forest with Vola @Unkown58

Gren didn't stick around for long when the Orcs were distracted. Oh sure, he listened a little, but as soon as Vola vog the axe and Gren saw the opportunity to do so, he left the trio of orcs before any were none the wiser. A perfect heist if Gren ever saw one, and he's seen many. Somehow. Running out of the camp and towards the forest, he met up with Vola outside. He got to admire the axe up close, in awe of it's simple yet savage appearance.

"Whoa ho ho! We can kill any beastie with that! Hey, why don't you hold onto it for now okay? I wanna use it yeah, but we all need a weapon. Let's head to tha mines to get some more, and maybe hunt something inna cave, but while we walking let's keep an eye out for some vines or grass, rocks, or good sticks. Maybe we can make some spears or something we can use and hunt with. If we can get some good vines or find a nice stringy tree, I can make some rope and we can make a sling so we can kill stuff from far away."

Gren was just full of ideas, adding more and more to his ever growing list of busy work and chores. Even now despite having just entered the forest he was already looking around for those fibers he needs to make some rope. For some reason he vaguely remembers how to make some, perhaps from watching some of the orc women in camp weave cloth from plants using just their hands. He was also looking for useable wood from perhaps an old branch or a young sapling they could harvest to make a suitable spear shaft. While ideally they tip it with stone, Gren figures just sharpening the tip to a point could suffice as well.

"Oh yeah, the cave we should go looking is to the north. You know which way is north right?" Gren looks around for the trees. He vaguely remembers some saying about moss growing towards the north, but he isn't really sure if that's true.but better than wandering off in a random, possibly wrong direction.

Vola

Current Location: Outside of Orc Camp
Current Activity: Working with Gren @Lucius Cypher to forage for supplies and find the North Cave.

Vola didn’t have to wait long for Gren at the meeting place, happily showing off the hatchet to the bigger orc as he arrived. That was the biggest risk she had ever taken in her life, and she’s still in awe at how smoothly things went down. Vola did take a quick pause as Gren suggested that she be the one to hold onto the axe, she was not expecting that. Thank you Gren, that’s really generous of you! We both worked hard for the axe though, so just let me know whenever you want to use it. It’s a good idea to look around for supplies, maybe if we find a hollow log or something, we can use the axe to make it into a stretcher so that we’ll be able to carry more? If we get some rope, we could also use it to make some basic traps.

Even now, Vola was trying to remember all of the DIY and nature books that she read in her past life. This might be another world, but some of the information should be able to carry over nicely and that way she wouldn’t be too reliant on Gren. She has her pride as an orc Runt after all, she was planning on pulling her weight! Thankfully, Gren gave her a good opportunity to start as he mentioned the North cave. Vola might not have spent a lot of time in nature as Veronica, but she read a book once that explained how to find North and she spent an entire week testing it with her dad’s old compass to see if it worked. It was morning, so as long as the sun still rose in the East, this should work.

Nodding her head at Gren’s question, Vola pointed her left arm towards the East where the sun rose and held her right arm straight so that it would be pointing to the West. Yeah! I think so! It’s actually really easy to find north. I heard somewhere that the sun rose in the East, so if you you’re your left arm towards where it came up and point your other arm in the opposite direction, you’ll know where East and West is. Now the way that I’m facing is South, which means that North is…

Turning around to where her back was facing, Vola pointed with a flourish. “That way. I’m at least seventy percent sure of it.”

Having added the last part with a slightly sheepish smile, Vola turned to Gren. Sorry it’s not a hundred percent, but I haven’t had the chance to really test this out here. Not a lie, she hasn’t had a chance to test it out in this new world yet.

"Want to try going that way anyway?"

As the Runts lay there, some still on top of their prey and all catching their breath, the forest around them was quiet...at least for the moment.

The near silence of the forest, save for the breathing of herself and the others around her, was certainly something she felt grateful for in the aftermath of it all. A familiar sensation that felt somewhat nostalgic somehow just as it felt satisfying at the same time. Naturally it would still take some readjustment to all of this in the longer term, but for the short term it felt good to get something with her own two hands again to start things off. The lack of books or other such materials though? Ah, that could all be remedied in due time and course.

Using burnt charcoal to write on the rock of the mountain, or sticks to scratch things into the dirt and ground when she was alone, that sort of thing would be used to jot things down in the meantime. Things none of the other orcs would perhaps see any value in, outside of a certain moron back home who might just want to mess things up for giggles. Hmm. Also another problem that could be dealt with in due time.

"You two stay here and watch our kill. Stoke a fire. Rub some spit and dirt into your wounds."
In Soviet Russia, The Food Cooks You!

With a quiet nod to the female runt who spoke to her, Lazash finally deigned to let go of the dead Elwet in her arms and stretch a little. It made her glad that she'd continued to cling to the Elwet until its death throes were finished, however, avoiding further talon slashes but still getting buffeted by the wings in her case. Not a fun time. Not fun to get wounds either. But you had to risk something to get something when it came to surviving or learning some more practical things, and that much hadn't been lost on her even in this new life thus far.

The young female orc would then look over to the, admittedly much worse off looking, Grunthor before pulling her bloodied stone out of the dead Elwet's body and walking over to him.

So the two of them were staying to stoke the fire and such, eh? No problem, depending on his disposition for things. Either way she had agreed with the aged-sounding female runt's general ideas so far, all save for the dirt and spit part of it all at the very least. It made her own time of surviving a bit better to start, and she had managed to get the information she needed to hunt sleeping nighttime creatures eventually anyway...though the Head Warrior's words did bring some reasonable concern to mind with his reaction to it all. Hmm.

"If you can see well enough, could you help me gather wood and kindling? I can try to help treat those wounds of yours and mine a little bit, but not painlessly, if we can get this fire going at least."

The poor Grunthor looked like someone had started to trepan his head in a few places, but didn't finish the job in the end and walked off. Thank goodness for that, however, because she had some idea of what to do to try to help him. The operative word being 'try' and based on his willingness and so forth. Plus getting the food started cooking would be good as well, and she could maybe get to the butchering to start it before the others got back.

Eventually they could get some meat and such roasting on sticks over the fire and all, beyond whatever they could maybe eat raw. Eh. One thing at a time for now.

Akeno

Less than a day ago, she had still been a regular teenager. Akeno had been a few months away from graduating high school but already knew which university she was going to attend; she was still living at home with her parents but was already thinking ahead to when she would finally move out and be able to live by herself. Her biggest worry had been what she was going to do with her new found independence and whether or not she had picked the right classes.

Now here she was, killing wild animals with her bare hands.

Her elbow hurt where it had struck horn and bone, the body she now inhabited not as conditioned, as toughened up as her previous one. There was blood too, just a few drops of it; not her own, but the blood of the creature she had just bludgeoned to death, running down her forearm.

A sigh escaped her lips as the message popped up in front of her eyes, telling her what she already knew. It disappeared almost as suddenly, apparently reading her dismissive attitude as an actual dismissal. How did that work anyway? Why was she seeing messages at all? The goddess had said something about a system and their connection to it; was this that system?

She wasn’t given much time to think about it, as the old-sounding orc began to call out orders to their little group. The others would handle making a fire while Akeno went with her to chase down the last of the birds; there was no dissent and one of the others simply nodded and got to work. Akeno turned to look at the old orc and considered whether or not to do the same; the other orc was quickly setting themselves up as the leader, giving orders like this and coming up with the plan, and they’d all just kind of gone along with it because no one had a better idea. Now she was truly taking charge and they were still going along with it, just like they’d probably go along with her next idea too.

The question was did Akeno want to be a part of this group? Did she want to go along with what this stranger planned? She had her Elwet, she’d completed the requirements of the quest given to her by that orc back at camp; she could just leave now. Or, she could leave; do what she’d said earlier and just abandon the camp entirely and try to make her own way. Neither of those seemed like good ideas, but then neither did teaming up with a bunch of people she knew nothing about. Who were they, before all of this? What would they do with this second change? Could she trust them? Could she afford not to trust them?

Whatever. Better to go with what was working so far. Honestly, Akeno wasn’t good at this kind of thing; scheming, planning around other people, trying to figure out their motives. She was the kind of person who went with the flow of the situation; let other people take control and do what they wanted so long as it wasn’t too onerous. Life was easier that way. There were a few exceptions, times where fighting for her autonomy was worth the headache, but this wasn’t one of those times. Yet.

She shrugged at the old-voiced orc and began to walk out of the clearing, following the path scratched into the dirt by the fleeing Elwet.

“Fine, let’s go.”

Grunthor persevered and had continued hammering the sharp stone into the Elwet's head until it finally gave and died. It had gotten its own attacks in, but they looked far worse than they actually were. Head wounds bled like a son of a bitch. With a grunt he shoved himself to his feet, the rest had taken care of the other fire chickens, minus the one that had immediately fled. It didn't take long for everyone to start delegating things, the two wounded left behind to deal with the Elwet's while the others would go for the final one. Wouldn't it have been better for everyone to work on the birds?

Sighing he tilted his head back slightly so the blood wouldn't drip down his face, he didn't need to be blood blind. "I can see fine, I'm Grunthor by the way. So we don't go hey you." He said before following Lazash. Kindling and firewood he could do, you just needed dry stuff. Like branches and dry leaves or grass, maybe some bark. He wasn't entirely clueless about survival, he had camped before. But beyond that he knew fuck all.

The girl orc mentioned attempting to help with his head, which got a shrug. "That's fine, no pain no gain. I've been through worse." He commented while gathering what he figured would make for good burnable stuff. He was trying to focus on what the job was currently instead of watching the other two female orc runts run off after the fourth bird. Staying as a group and conserving energy felt like a better thing to do, but we'd see how it all played out.

As the Tatzelwurm reeled from Ushnekh's swift counterattack-- the pupils set within the runt's orange-gold eyes suddenly dilated as the animal before him began to panic. The taste of blood that filled his mouth, the growing body of an incredibly violent monster species, the slight dull to his thinking from the drain on his mana... Seeing the creature struggle to turn tail caused a sudden surge of adrenaline to flood Ushnekh's body as his predatory insticts flared to life.

Raising his stick high over his head-- Ushnekh threw his entire weight behind a violent downswing; some kind of accent slipping into the bellow of predatory fury as he went for the kill with everything he had left.

"URF WAAAAGHVE!"

Just as the tatzelwurm's claws dug into the ground, its tail whipping behind it, the earth it needed for purchase rose up again. As the shockwave spread out once more, overlapping with the previous one, the already loose earth was turned upwards and over as if a huge industrial plough ran through it. The Tatzelwurm was buried and crushed underneath the avalanche, its long tail sticking up from between two large clods.

The enemy has been vanquished!

The double earth wave had also loosened the roots of some of the plantlife around the area, causing a few bushes to fall over. In the process, it cleared Ushnekh's line of sight back in the direction of the camp--he'd be able to see Duram and Agar approaching.

They would also see him collapse to his knees, as if he'd just run a mile at a full sprint.

After several long seconds of catching his breath, Ushnekh shakily rose to his feet; using his stick for support. Hobbling over to his prize, the runt appraised his kill with a grimace-- hoping that the mangled body would satisfy whatever conditions were necessary for completing the quest assigned by the head warrior.

He just hoped they wouldn't ask how the hell the thing had died.

Freezing for a moment, Ushnekh stared at the pair of runts that were suddenly within his line of sight... Before promptly hurrying off toward the camp as if he had nothing to do with the sudden change of the forest terrain.
