Alice

The Birdcage

July 24th, 2017
8am

Alice flipped the sign on her front door, indicating that the Cafe was open to the public.

This was the first day, the Grand Opening, of The Birdcage. It was a relatively small place, able to seat about 20 people at most, and easy on the eyes. Neutral beige color, with a splash of light blue on the tables and counter. Padded seating in the booths, chairs, and stools made the place a little more inviting.

She figured everyone could use with a little more warmness anymore.

The news on the TV in the corner was covering the rumors swirling around about the 11th Ward under siege. Ghouls and Doves fighting it out, with more deaths from both sides being confirmed everyday.

"Damn, damn, damn," Alice muttered to herself.

The fighting was getting worse, and from what she's heard through various contacts...

Well, the Aegori Tree wasn't even trying yet.

With a sigh, Alice hung up a poster to advertise the coffee ( The best of Ward 8!) in the window as she thought on the matter.

Ghouls and humans just needed a way to cooperate. Form bonds, like what her parents had. They weren't so different, not really. It was the state of Tokyo that bred all the monsters on both sides after years of conflict.

If only other Ghouls would reach out to her, maybe they could make a difference.

Maybe they could bring change...

Travis

Travis rolled out of bed and squinted at his digital clock struggling to make out the numbers. Seven, five, Eight. AM! His head collided with his bedside table "Fuck I missed it." he forced himself to stand up and he rubbed his forehead and eyes. With a slight groan he made his way into the lounge of his apartment. He lazily flopped onto his couch and flicked on the TV only to catch the last few moments of the power rangers mega force outro. He sighed. "Now how am I supposed to spend the first thirty minuets of the day?..." He sighed and looked out a window.

He then made an agitated moan and got off his couch, he didn't want to got outside but he didn't want to be bored either. After a minuet or so he managed to coax himself off the comfy couch and into the shower. After cleaning himself up he looked out the window again I guess I could got to that new coffee shop that just opened today. No doubt other ghouls will be there, I might make some friends. Heh. With that thought he cracked a smile and got into one of his many suits. He then grabbed his keys, wallet and phone before heading out for the new Coffee shop.

As he walked along the footpath he counted his fingers confirming that he had to eat in the in three days at the very least, he could eat earlier but it was by no means necessary. As he walked up to the new coffee shop he read its name "The Birdcage" Huh,
this should be interesting.
he slid open the door and stepped inside. "Good morning." he said as he gave the woman at the desk a nod. He realised it had been quite a long time since he's had coffee he was never a big coffee person, but the girl behind the desk may change that.

Katashi

The Birdcage

July 24th, 2017
8am

It was a warm morning in Ward 8, and that was something Katashi could appreciate. He was walking down the street, fortunately having the day off. He decided to use this free time to get out and about the streets, taking the surroundings in. It's good to re-explore your area, therapeutic, even. Katashi took a drag of his cigarette, it was a good coping mechanism to go along with coffee. He took the time to sit on a bench and look at the bustling morning scene in front of him. Despite the busyness, the rush of it all, Katashi noticed the smaller pleasantries of watching it go past. The ebb and flow of car and people traffic was quite interesting to watch to Katashi. Just one of those human things.

While cigarettes were good and all, Katashi craved some goddamn coffee. He stood up from the bench and began to walk down the street again. His usual spot had changed their recipe so he was looking for something new. This was when he came across the newly opened Birdcage cafe. Katashi recalled seeing a flyer or two for this. Seeing the place claimed to have the best coffee in the whole ward, he had to give it a try. Walking into the fresh building, he took the time to admire the humble decor before seeing a slightly younger woman watching the TV. Katashi couldn't help but also be drawn into the report on the fighting in the 11th Ward. Katashi sighed.

"It's a damn shame, huh?" He said, not even noticing the other new patron who had entered the building before him.

Alice

The Birdcage

8am

Alice looked over at the first gentleman to enter. "Morning! What can I getcha?" she said amicably.

Before the man could answer, another young men entered, commenting on the news.
"Yeah, it's a real shame. Especially given the death. So much wasted life, all for nothing. Can I get you anything?" she replied softly.

Sniffing sightly, her face lit up as she looked at the two men. "And could I interest you two in a bit of discussion in regards to the Doves?" she said quietly. Any Ghoul could smell another, though she wasn't entirely sure what she smelled like. She imagined it was like a Ghoul, but it was reasonable that she might smell human or a weird mix of the two. (Ooc note: she smells like a Ghoul)

Perhaps these two could be the first she approached officially about her plans. Rumors already existed about the Wolf looking for allies, but Alice really wanted to quit working alone and begin in her ideas in person with Ghouls of Ward 8.

Katashi nodded at the woman's comments on the fighting. Her words couldn't have been truer. The lives lost in a pointless battle with no rhyme or reason. What was the true cause for the conflict? A plot by humans? By Ghouls? Or just pure disdain and hatred between the two in the area? The man shrugged at the thought. Whatever it was, it wasn't gonna stop anytime soon. Katashi sniffed the air. It was nice to be around his own kind, like an animal returning to his pack. With the doves about, it seemed like Katashi had to always be on guard. His night-time activities not helping with the uneasy feeling of constant edge either. He took a seat on the stools next to the counter. He smiled at the woman's offer.

"Your finest brew of coffee, please!" He asked cheerfully, completely contrasting with his looks and way of dressing. "I'm Katashi, by the way. What do you wanna talk about the doves for?"

Travis

Travis wasn't to pleased being interrupted but he didn't make a fuss. He then looked at the news as the woman spoke, he could sympathise with her views. He wasn't a big fan of the whole murder stick, tho in this his hands were far from clean. He then looked back at the woman as she asked what she could get them. But before he could make a decision she'd revealed herself as a ghoul, the shop was thick with the sent. Travis was slightly shocked with the blatant announcement about Doves.

Travis looked from side to side then back at the girl and then at the now introduce Katashi. "Perhaps it would be a little smarter to have a conversation like that when there is less people likely to walk in on it?" He tilted his head towards the open sign on the door of the coffee shop. He got a feeling she'd been bottling this question up for a while and just wanted to spill it on someone, or she just forgot caution for a moment. "And I'll have a brown with two sugars please." Travis wanted to divert this conversation, he was not one to talk about ghoul related things outside of an environment he felt was secure.

The Birdcage

Alice hummed lightly as she got the coffees, silently handing them out. "I've spent months perfecting my coffee. I'm incredibly picky about the grounds I use, even the sugar. I do hope I haven't boasted too much in calling it The best of Ward 8," she said once she was back behind the counter. Looking at Katashi at the counter, she propped herself up on the counter by the elbows. "The name's Alice, for the record."

Looking back at the unnamed man, she flashed a smile. "And see, I have a clear view of the window. Plus, I mean, it's not like we're discussing anything out of the ordinary, now are we? Just little ol' me and two customers discussing the news, eh?" she said in an almost dismissive tone. Perhaps it was a trick of her singsong voice? "I was just wondering what you two thought of the rumors swirling about a group of nonviolent Ghouls over in the 20th Ward? Supposedly, if you believe the talk, there's very little violence over there because of it. They coexist fairly well, and they protect each other and everyone else they can. I personally think it's an excellent idea, and wish more could do something like that. Perhaps even a simple Cafe owner like myself could do something like that, if there was enough support running around."

Travis

Travis took a seat and looked between his fellow ghouls. "I guess it's my turn to introduce myself. I'm Travis." He looked back at the window and sighed. "I guess you're right. Travis scoffed slightly at the mention of the peaceful ghouls. "I don't know whether to trust tho rumours or not, if they have proof then fine but until I see it I'm not sold... You are right about the idea tho. Peaceful coexistence would be nice. Not having to worry about an origination founded for the sole purpose of killing you're species. It's a hard thing to deal with, but thanks to binge eaters and the other rif raf the rest of us have to live in fear."

He shook his head and looked out the window "I'd like to think we could gather up lots of Ghouls and work together to create a peaceful ward. But who's to say the humans will show us the same curtsy?" Travis felt like he was being a bummer but he still stood by what he said. As much as he'd love not to look over his shoulder every day or have to put on an act so that his human neighbours didn't fear him or discriminate against him. That wasn't the world they lived in.

Katashi smiled as Travis introduced himself before considering everyone's points about the possibility of a similar partnership like that of the 20th Ward. The idea appealed to Katashi, quite a lot actually. The premise of humans and ghouls coexisting peacefully was very appealing and it's not like Katashi wouldn't want that. However, he knew all too well the plight of humans and their need to be in total control of things they do not understand. Peace is achievable, for sure, but when they're message is met with eventual hostility then what would be the plan against that?

"I'm definitely for the idea. If a group of ghouls got together to spread a message of peace and acceptance then that could definitely work. However, if that group was met with the institutionalized hatred, and at some point they would be, what would the action be for being physically attacked?" Katashi asked the two. "In my opinion, peace can only grow when it is protected from any who would harm it's formation."

Seto

Ward 8 CCG Field HQ

9am

@BCTheEntity@SilverDawn@FrostedCaramel

Seto stood at the front of a decent sized room towards the top of the 5 story building that was the CCG's Field HQ for Ward 8, his back to the various desk like seating, a large monitor in front of him full of information regarding the Ward.

The rest of the few Investigators were due to arrive within the next minute for their briefing.

Crossing his arms, he waited, still as a statue.

There was news. Bad news.

Alice listened with her head tilted slightly at the replies, happy to finally have both of their names at least. Katashi seemed on board with the concept, while Travis showed more reserve.

Tapping the counter with her pointer finger, Alice waited a moment before replying.

"See, you bring up good points. But you're being pragmatic, both of you. There's the old saying, gotta break a few eggs... Of course there will be violence required eventually. Ghouls and Doves alike won't agree and will stick to the old ways. But a group looking to make peace... They could protect the innocent and the weak, and work ever so slowly towards Peace. It won't happen overnight, or even within a month. That's just plain find to think so. Yeah," she said matter-of-factly. "But if enough people came together... Things could change, eh? Ghouls don't have to kill to live, and there's already proof out there that humans and Ghouls can coexist and love each other."

She looked back at the TV for a second before continuing. "See, people like them Aegori Tree can't keep doing what they're doing. And the CCG can't just keep killing every Ghoul they find. It don't work, and it just makes everything worse, yeah? So, a group like what I'm talking about, they could work to stop all that."

Travis tilted his head a little thinking deeply about the idea. It wasn't a bad idea by any means but it would without a doubt encounter resistance, be it form bloodthirsty ghouls or CCG Doves. Tho he didn't like risks he knew this was something that could actually help people. And the more he thought about it the more he wanted to help, he couldn't just leave knowing that this girl intended to put her life on the line not only for ghouls but humans as well. Then he paused realising what all this actually meant "Wait. Are you asking us to become vigilantes?... Because I think I could work with that." He said in a surprisingly enthusiastic tone.

Travis knew he probably wouldn't have been able to change this girls opinion, she seemed completely sure about it. So he thought he might as well help her, after all the idea of a peaceful ward was very appealing. Plus he couldn't just pass up the chance to be part of a crime fighting team Just like the power rangers! He thought to himself unable to avoid smirking.

Mikio

Tea Lounge

Donning a short-sleeved, white dress shirt and black pants with matching tennis shoes, and the contrasting apple-green apron emblematic of Tea Lounge, Mikio prepared to open the teahouse.

It was a matter of getting the kettles up and ready, scrubbing the milky quartz countertops of the tables and island table, and parting the curtains. As the drapes separated, morning light spilled over Mikio, painting the honeyed bamboo flooring a brilliant yellow hue. He paused, watching businessmen and women, senile sightseers and children running down the sidewalks, and a tired smile grew. Propping open the door with a weird bauble Shika bought in Europe, Mikio stepped outside. With a wet cloth in-hand, and a pastel blue piece of chalk in the other, Mikio set up the chalkboard stand and wiped off yesterday's cheery display.

Kneeling down, Mikio wrote:

Beautiful mornings are best paired with:
Fresh Coffee - 115 Yen (All Sizes!)
Teas (Chai, Dandelion Root, Matcha) - 250 Yen
Steamed Rice with Whole-grain Bun - 600 Yen
Miso Soup - 500 Yen

He finished the brief menu with a yellow sun at the bottom and stood, admiring the dainty curlicues of his writing-all gleaned from Shika. Mikio stepped back inside, setting aside the chalk and cloth. He tied his hair up into a short ponytail, stray locks of brown hair settling at his temples. He sat down at one of the tables by the door and waited.

Bisuto Ketsu

Ward 8 CCG Field HQ

9am

@Old Amsterdam@SilverDawn@FrostedCaramel@Sketcher

Ketsu entered the boardroom that day not expecting much positivity. He'd already seen the news regarding the state Ward 11 was in, and frankly, he felt sorry for the poor bastards duking it out over there... well, he felt one side or the other were bastards, and in the end, wasn't that really the same sentiment? He'd certainly make a joke along those lines if anybody asked.

For now, it seemed he was the first to arrive... pardon him, he was the second to arrive. And wasn't the other man a familiar face, or at least a familiar scent? Special Class Investigator Seto, if he wasn't mistaken - the very same he'd made his bet with less than two years ago. And from the looks of things... hang on a moment, was he... no, surely not! Wouldn't that have been more obvious? But maybe...

'Sir, it's good to see you again,' Ketsu began jovially, internally wondering how to ask his question, and eventually just deciding to be direct, as he'd be expected to. 'And forgive me if I haven't noticed until now, but the fact you're here before me means you were either the Lead Investigator running this Ward all along... or you're very punctual when it comes to the Lead Investigator's meetings! Heh- Heavens, I never knew,' he quipped, a slight grin crossing his face. Was he being too friendly? No, no... and he was sure Seto wouldn't be too harsh even if he was being too friendly. The man wasn't quite that uptight, to his knowledge.

Sora

A young man stood outside the wide doors of the meeting room with a gray briefcase next to his feet. He stood out among the rest of the people in the building with his unkempt appearance. From between the slits of the brown strands of hair, one could see the investigator's tired, silver eyes looking at one of the walls in the corridors, his mouth moving subtly as if to speak with no voice. He kept rhythym with one of his feet tapping on the ground, clearly agitating the secretary across him. His tie was loose enough that the knot reached down to the first button below his neck. A part of his shirt was tucked out of his pants, and the other part, obscured by the pardessus he had folded on his arm.

Through the music in his ear, he heard an obscure noise. He seemed surprised for a moment, rewinding to listen again, and just there, he heard the sound again. Again, he rewinded, and the sound grew louder. He raised his head to see the woman behind the secretary desk glaring at him. As he took out one of his earphone's, he shook his head as if to ask what she wanted. With a loud hissing whisper, she snarked back. "Stop that! With your foot! For the last twenty minutes...!" The young investigators head sunk into his chest, grinning apologetically. "Sorry," he answered a bit loudly as hints of the music he had been listening to could be heard faintly throughout the echoing corridors. When he stopped tapping his foot, the woman sat down, clearly still annoyed. His eye wandered off as he put his earphone back in, mumbling.

"I wonder..."

The striations and chunks missing from the table. Remi's fingers followed the grooves until the lines reached the end of the table. It was definite. The conclusion? Whoever did this to the table was an ass. Remi's investigations had all come up short. Each one resulted in a dead end or red herring. It didn't help that the CCG operated purely on a need-to-know basis and Remi didn't need to know. As a result, she was spending the day in a fast food restaurant, drinking coffee and trying to eavesdrop on any sort of lead. Of course, that was before she had received an urgent text from the CCG.

She quickly downed what remained of her coffee and ran towards the headquarters. Her pace only slowing when she realized what a horrible mistake it was to run with a filled stomach. Reaching the CCG building, the lobby was the same as always. She walked past the Rc gates, her eyes instinctively shutting on the off chance that it would go off. Thankfully, the gate remained silent. Into the elevator and up to the top.

She entered the room, ignoring the loud tapping of the investigator outside. "Sir," Remi said as she bowed to Seto. She stood next to the extraordinarily tall detective, not exactly acknowledging his existence. After all, she preferred her interactions with coworkers to be primarily business.

Kobayashi Taiki

Taiki sat on a retaining wall of a small garden in the square directly across from the CCG Field Headquarters of the 8th Ward. He had been there for awhile, the growing pile of cigarette butts at his feet a testament to that. He took a long drag from what remained of the cigarette in his mouth before dropping it to the ground and snuffing it out with the toe of his shoe. He checked his watch, 'Less than three minutes. Fucking meetings...' he thought as he stood from the wall and began to walk toward the road. He stepped out without paying much attention to the traffic, earning himself a car horns blast and a rather angry looking driver to which he waved and slightly smiled in their direction as he crossed in front of them.

Across the road he made his way up the steps of the 8th Ward Office in twos before he pulled the door open at the top. He moved to the security check at the entrance, flashing his ID and stepping through the RC Gates with a bored look on his face and then made his way to the stairwell.

A little over a minute later Taiki would burst from the stairwell entrance on the floor of the meeting, breathing a little bit heavier than normal but otherwise looking normal. He turned around in the hallway, gaining his bearings quickly before making his way down the hall toward where he was pretty sure was the conference room. Turning a corner his guess was confirmed as correct when he found himself staring at Sora as he waited outside the room. Taiki moved along side the younger Investigator, standing before the doorway of the briefing room he shrugged at Sora and pulled an earbud from his left ear, "Figured you'd be inside already, I had to finish a cigarette, it," he raised up his hands showing six fingers to Sora as he did, "Took a little longer than I had anticipated." he said with a grin before he tapped on Sora's shoulder and pulled him into the briefing room.

Once inside he fell in against the wall, bringing his arms up against his chest and looking past the other present Investigators, his mood quickly souring at the fact he was simply in a briefing room at all.

Seto smiled at Ketsu, his eyes softening for a moment. He neglected to respond at the moment, however.

Once everyone was inside, joined by Katsura moments late, Seto turned around.

"Thank you all for coming on such short notice. I am Lead Special Investigator Seto Tanaka, head of the 8th Ward CCG Field Operations. I also advised and evaluate graduates from the Academy."

"As I'm sure you're all aware, the situation in Ward 11 has been escalating. We've instigated a Ward wide evacuation, effective immediately. As such, most of the rest of the Wards are in short supply of Investigators. As such... Things may be a little harder from here on out," he began slowly, the screen depicting various information and statistics on the 11th Ward. "To make matters worse, there are rumors of another group of Ghouls in the 20th Ward banding together. I fear we may be looking at similar situations in nanny Wards in the weeks to follow."

He ran a hand through his hair. "With that in mind, I have further bad news." The screen changed to pictures of grisly murder scenes. "There have been no less than five of these attacks in the last month. Autopsy reports suggest blunt trauma and stabbing damage as the causes of death in each case. Reports are scarce, and we so not know who, or what, is performing these acts. The amount of missing flesh indicates Ghoul behavior, and we may be facing an early stage S-ranked threat...a Binge Eater in the making. However, some of the damage appears to be possibly from Quinque, though a Chimera Ghoul can't be ruled out. I must repeat the emphasis on being careful, but I want this bastard found and neutralized as the current priority." Seto slammed a fist down to punctuate the sentence.

"Sora, you will remain under First Class Investigator Kobayashi. You two are to focus on stopping any Ghoul activity you can discover. Associate Special Class Investigator Katsura, I'll be sending you out with Rank 2 Junior Investigator Remi. I want you two to review the latest crime scene and get a damn profile on this mystery killer. Ketsu, you and I are going to take a special trip," he commanded in a barking voice.

"Any questions?" He asked, quieter.

Location: 8th Ward, Tea Lounge
Tag: @Fathomless

Naosada sat on the corner edge of a flower shop across the tea cafe. It looked pleasant and inviting, but he had witnessed gruesome traps laid in enticing forms. Even still, if only to be safe, he had decided scout it. His long travel on foot had started it up, it had been two weeks since he had eaten. And he could feel his instincts starting to overwhelm him. He needed coffee; a nice hot cup of steaming coffee. Something to satisfy him, something to help him remain him.

He let out a cool breath, felt the empyreal heat of his Ghoulish power recede. "I pray for that boy that they have coffee."

For he had cemented in his mind, that to avoid falling into his lesser civilized-self, he would sacrifice one for the good of the masses. Naosada strode inside the Tea Lounge, or so the sign had read, and paused at the boy. It was bright, homely. Rays of soft sunlight fell inside; uniformed soldiers of saffron light. Lively plants, which promoted a sense of life and gentle elegance hung above and was situated in corners. Naosada looked at the youth and saw a graceful figure inside the boy. Even still, he was incapable of hiding the paramount importance of his momentary question. "Excuse me," he said softly. "Do you sell coffee here?"

...well, shit, Seto really was the Lead Investigator here. And he'd not figured that out until now? What, had he zoned out the day that was announced? Or maybe he just hadn't ever been put under the man's command, but it was nonetheless an untenable lapse of knowledge. He would not be one of the stupid people of the world, damn it.

That said, and as expected, Tanaka came with bad news, namely that Ward 11 was being evacuated wholesale. "A little harder", indeed, but at the end of the day, all it meant was more food for Ketsu. He did so detest pretending to consume and digest normal food... though he'd long since learned to surpress his vomit reaction until an appropriate time, occasionally he just had to suck up the impure nutrient substance and take the hit to his health for a little while.

But not today. Today, he surmised as the one-eyed investigator continued to speak, would be a good day to feast. Shame about the ghouls banding together in 20th Ward, where he had no particular influence, but a random binge eater, who nobody would notice had been a little bit drained of blood? It was practically an invitation! So long as he could figure out how to get at the body whilst his partner was distracted. Wait too long, and the blood began to coagulate. That was the woooorst; it meant he had to take bites of his meal, and that was DNA evidence waiting to happen.

And of course, his partner was none other than Seto Tanaka himself. Of the others in the room, Unbalanced Sora remained with Kobayashi McDaggerthrow - as usual - whilst Remi the Airhead was assigned to Katsura Scissorgay. No offense was meant to any of them with those internal nicknames, but it was the easiest way to remember roughly who they were in his mind, given that none especially stood out otherwise, and he generally avoided becoming too close with any of the other investigators for obvious reasons. Seto was the exception, rather than the rule, given their mildly-shared past, and even that was tenuous.

Still, it sounded like Ketsu would definitely be the lucky one who got to take out this particular ghoul. And if he succeeded here, showed Tanaka exactly how skilled he really was, perhaps he'd be seeing his way up to an early promotion to Rank 1 Investigator. And only a few weeks into his tenure, too, oh how impressive his fellows would says... and what better justification to gain ever more privacy in his working hours, perhaps, than by increasing his rank? T'was the idea all along, to be sure.

'No questions from me, sir,' Ketsu obliged, a bland smile crossing his face. 'I expect the details of our special trip will be relayed to me en route, if they aren't directly related to finding that ghoul - and might I say, I'm honoured to be taken under your wing this time around? I shan't let you down!' And just to complete the image, a quick salute, because why not? After all, he was feeling enthusiastic about this next mission.

Mikio

Tea Lounge

@Renny

The sun's grainy glow engulfed the teashop, and the street swelled with a medley of folk: merchants giving impressive, albeit rehearsed, spiels; the faces of men and women blurring together as they rushed by; laughing children on bicycles. The lifeblood of the Kōtō Ward, forming a beautiful monolith. These certain, special days provided the silver lining for the encumbering pall of stress covering Mikio's life. A brief respite; one he never took for granted. During these honeyed moments, he often let himself swim backwards in his mind, returning to Kou. An ache formed in Mikio's chest. Though he left Ward 12, his memories of it--most importantly, of Kou--stayed tethered to him. To forget someone who gave him so much to remember would be a slap in the face, and so he kept the images of their time together alive.

For a while, Mikio thought. He thought about Kou, and Shika, who remained confined to the dimly lit room upstairs, drugged to the point of near-unconsciousness. He thought of his parents, and wondered with an apathy that worried him if they were still alive.

"Excuse me, do you sell coffee here?" The voice, as gentle as a breeze, broke the seated waiter from his aimless daydream, his gaze having drifted along the steady mass of people passing hurriedly by the shop. Mikio stood, idly smoothing out his apron. "Good morning!" he sang in reply, his tired smile shifting to a canty grin, "We do. Just the regular kind?"
