Where have Original RPs gone!? [Death of Originality]

The OP's title is a little dramatic. There is no lack of originality on RPG per se but rather, execution. The execution of a RP, for me, matters more than some nebulous concept of originality and how unique it is.

Actually there are fandom rps all the time, the thread was in response to "where dem originals rps at all i see is fandoms uwu". You can have max-hype execution for your marvel rp (infinity war 3.0) but it will still be a fandom RP. You can't say vanilla icecream is chocolate.

I mean sure, my Danganronpa RP is, of course, a Danganronpa RP. I mean it has a lot of differences that fans will notice, but it has 1 cannon character and lightly touches on the lore.

I play in an RP that's all about magical girls. Doesn't really rely on any type of IP. Just some random city in America loaded with magical girls and the occasional magical boy. There are dragons, gods, cosmic horrors, aliens, etc. If that sounds farcical, that's CYOA RPS for you. It's original, but magical girls aren't. The idea of characters having powers attuned to an element or force is also 'unoriginal.'

Ultimately, I think people use fandoms because it's easy to communicate an idea. I can say "Hey, I've got an anime RP where you can be ninjas, b-but the ninjas have magical powers and get into big fights!" or I can say "I've got a Naruto RP, come look." Problem is you can't really talk to people about your RP in the topic title very well. Both RPS I've described have been going for about 3 years now, so I don't really look at the rest of the forum much.

99 percent of my RP is done 1x1. Its faster, its cleaner and as a general rule the writing is better.

Just to jump on the status-bar train which never ends... Where have all the original RPs gone, have they dried up and jump off ship? Are there too many generic fandom rps. Personally I don't think so, but there are definitely more fandoms than original RPs it just depends on a lot of things but everyone being stuck inside is definitely contributing to the rise of dope ass OG rps and our beloved fandom rps as well.

Thoughts?

Just outta curiousity, but are academy RPs, fantasy adventure RPs, and all that sorta stuff considered original? Or are they fandom offshoots/AUs/whatever of, say, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings?

Just because people are having a bit of fun doesn't mean this isn't a discussion that should be had. I'm not contributing too much because I already let my thoughts be known on the status bar. People tend to gravitate toward Fandom RP's because they're familiar, but a good original RP, if it doesn't get drowned out can get good traction.

Most stories are unoriginal, if you want to be honest. I mean...there's literally novels about how all stories can be narrowed down to seven things.

For those not in the know.

'Man against man'
'Man against nature'
'Man against himself'
'Man against God'
'Man against society'
'Man caught in the middle'
'Man and woman'

Or alternatively,
'Overcoming the monster'
'Rags to riches'
'The Quest'
'Voyage and Return'
'Rebirth'
'Comedies'
'Tragedies'

So maybe people at large simply like the familiar. Or at the very least, don't know what they want. (But it's certainly not always originality.) Though unlike many novels, I can't say I've ever seen more unique experiences coming from writing than in Roleplaying itself. Where you have many potential writers, all with different abilities, styles, etc. Some that even game-ify the concept. Separated from tabletop or text-based games. (Albeit, not many on this forum.) But I'd argue I see plenty of originality or lack thereof in both 'original' and 'fandom' ideas. And as it was already covered, using tropes in writing aren't automatically a negative. Since if it's used all the time...it's usually beneficial to/liked by the readers.

But to keep it brief, since it's already going downhill fast, if you can't find something original. Maybe, make it yourself.
