P E R S O N A L D E T A I L S Full Name - 浜名暁也 (Hamana Kyōya) Age - 20 Gender - Male Occupation - Teacher's Assistant - P E R S O N A L I T Y Nice Guy Kyōya is always willing to lend a hand, a shoulder, a smile, a compliment... he's just really kind in general. He is a big believer in "forgive and forget," and it's generally understood that Kyōya is type that wouldn't even hurt a fly. Sometimes he can be a bit of a pushover because of this, in fact only last year he would spent most of his days off running errands that people asked of him, but more recently he has been learning to master the art of politely declining! Trusting Nearly to the point of naivete. It's not that Kyōya is dumb and doesn't believe in the concept of "lying," but rather - for what reason would someone lie? In most cases it doesn't make sense to deceive someone, and so Kyōya just never considers it an option. He'll go along with anything. Playing pranks on him is common among the children of his class. Passionate Get him going on a topic, and Kyōya will be happy to talk your ear off - and wave his arms around while he does so. He's able to rattle off random information about his preferred topics at the drop of a hat, and never tires of them. He takes the utmost delight in teaching and being taught. Of course, this passion extends to more than just learning. He is passionate about people, helping and protecting them. Often times he goes well out of his way to do so, and the on the flip side he can become a worrywart over others. S K I L L S E T Studious Long hours spent pouring over scrolls and transcribing the elders' stories made Kyōya into a fine scholar. He learns more quickly and retains more of what he's learned, is able to catch the small details in anything even while under pressure, able to focus more intently and for longer periods, and able to stay still and quiet without getting antsy for a while. Niche Encyclopedia If there's one thing you can count on a nerd scholar for, it's in-depth knowledge about their field. Kyōya has a wealth of knowledge about flora and fauna, both the mundane and the supernatural (although he his knowledge on the later still leaves a lot to be desired). Though not a survivalist, Kyōya can identify different plants and animals, and knows their uses or traits... for the most part. He's extremely well read but lacks practical experience. He also holds some knowledge about the village's history, as well as some bits and pieces about the world's history in general, thanks to stories passed down from the village's elders. Sign Potential Like many in Heiseina, Kyōya can use a couple of Signs. With his penchant for study, Kyōya could probably have mastered a couple more even at his age - but he is more interested in stories, and the natural world. He is adept with the Signs he does know, and if he applied himself he could pick up more fairly quickly. | Physical Description In looks, height, and style, Kyōya is exceptionally average. He doesn't have any particularly interesting physical features - he isn't muscular or marred with scars, he has no farmer's tan nor callouses from field work, and his hair is cut in a common masculine style with no fancy accessories in it. The only thing that sets him apart is his glasses, proof of a life of study. Kyōya stands at the same height as most of the other adults in the village, and though he's on the skinnier side now the older women in town tease him about his sweet tooth, telling him he'll start to put on pudge as he ages if he keeps it up. It's already starting to show a little, though it's hard to tell since Kyōya is always wrapped up properly in robes and yukata except on the very most humid of days. Character Conceptualization A young scholar. Kind and helpful, Kyōya puts his love of learning to use instructing the children in town. He plans to take over the schoolhouse once the current head instructor steps down (although that man is a stubborn goat and claims to have another decade in him before he'll retire). Kyōya has a particular interest in history, nature, and the supernatural. Like many people he also loves animals, and keeps an unusually smart feline companion named Kōshaku. Kyōya grew up in the heart of Heiseina, living a simple, modest life as an only child with his mother and father. The Hamano family come from a tradition of bakers; Kyōya being the black sheep with abysmal skill with any kind of cooking no matter how many cookbooks he'd read. When Kyōya got older and decided to dedicate his life to one of study instead, his family had no qualms at all. A bright pupil, Kyōya was welcomed as an assistant in the school house. He gets along with the staff and the students - as well as most everyone in Heiseina. Kyōya is living his dream life; he lives in peace in and safety, he enjoys his job, and he's happy to listen to everything the elders speak about and learn the anything the yokai in the Mumbling Wood feel like teaching. He is content to spend the rest of his life in the village. ...well, he'd be lying if he said he wasn't curious about what was outside of the valley. If nothing else, his scholar's heart longing to know. Kyōya isn't a coward and if there's one think he definitely does not fear it's the unknown, but the thought of actually leaving feels strange to him. __________________________ So character concept: a simple young nerd who trusts in everyone. He has a strong heart and if presented with a tough situation he will rise to the occasion, he just doesn't know it yet. Most of his connections in the village are neutral or good, as he's passively built his reputation as someone who can be relied on. There are likely a few he doesn't get along with, but he doesn't seek out conflict with them. When conflict eventually reaches him I'd like to think that Kyōya will have a hard time at first but eventually grow into a courageous individual. He likely will not have much physical utility (though I can see him being the type to throw himself in harm's way to protect someone else). P E R S O N A L D E T A I L S Full Name - 林純恋 (Hayashi Sumiko) Age - 26 Gender - Female Occupation - Traveling Artist - P E R S O N A L I T Y Confident More than anything, Sumiko believes in herself. She puts faith in her own plans and creates a self-fulfilling prophecy for herself: if she believes she will succeed, then surely it will be so. Though mostly reserved for herself, her confidence can spread to others in the form of sincere encouragement. Pushy Sumiko really likes getting what she wants. At times she can be a bit forceful in pushing her ideas onto others. Sometimes she even pushes herself to keep going at something futile, whether out of some misplaced sense of pride or just because she can be a bit of a sore loser. Diligent Blood, sweat, tears... okay, not so much blood, but Sumiko does work hard at her craft. When she puts on performances she makes sure to research her roles and get all the details correct. The same goes for her art pieces, she painstakingly tries to capture her subject perfectly every time. She's driven and careful when it counts. S K I L L S E T Rhythm and Balance A self-proclaimed expert in traditional dance and hopping back and forth on stage, Sumiko has a very good sense of balance. She has a strong core and her coordination is top notch. She's dexterous and rarely fumbles anything, whether she uses her hands or her feet. Physical Artist Besides acting, dancing, and spoken poetry, Sumiko is pretty good with a brush. Her calligraphy is steady and smooth, her paintings and drawings are detailed and life-like, and of course she can read and write quickly. If you need something written or drawn up for you, Sumiko is your girl - but it may take a little longer just because she can be a perfectionist when it comes to her own work. Persuasive Sumiko has a knack for roping others into doing what she wants. This isn't always aggressive badgering - in fact being a poet Sumiko can be quite cool with her words, and being an actor she can make anything sound like the truth. She doesn't go around lying to people though, it's just that she can be quite convincing. With some people after a conversation with her they end up running an errand and thinking it was their idea in the first place. | Physical Description About a dozen centimeters shorter than the other women her age, Sumiko still stands out with her shockingly pale hair and her large blue eyes. The mole on her face is one of many all over her body, and she boldly calls them all "beauty marks." Her natural appearance is homely, but so she paints her face with varying degrees of make-up even at home some it's hard to tell. She enjoys dressing up like that, making an art piece on her own skin. She also wears elaborate and stylish clothing as well, including the frames she wears over her eyes. It's common to find ink stains on her hands and arms, and sometimes ever her face. Character Conceptualization Painting! Poetry! Dance! Drawing! Acting! Storytelling! ...stilling working on the music! Even small towns need entertainment. Sumiko takes it upon herself to provide that. She's a "jack of all trades" type when it comes to the arts, with the notable exception of song and instrument. Please, don't call her tone deaf though, she will vehemently deny it. She also is rubbish at pottery, but that's more fun to fail at. She was born in Heiseina, her family the last of the dying Hayashi clan. Once well respected, they fell into debt and after climbing out they never made it back to their former glory. When her father passed after having two daughters, the clan's fate was sealed. Honestly it was as freeing as it was sad. Their mother passed a couple of years later, and from then on the Hayashi sisters lived on their own in a large empty estate. To provide for themselves, and to feel less lonely, they leased their land for the cultivating of crops and often hosted others in their home. Sumiko, the younger and more rambunctious child, enjoyed listening to all the stories and gossip being thrown around. This sparked her desire for travel and art. Though she's never been outside of the valley, Sumiko has traveled to to most of the tiny villages and homesteads around it peddling her trade. She offers custom portraits, pre-made art pieces and poem compilations, all inspired from things she's seen and heard during her "mini adventures." Have you heard the story giant earth spider that was spotted a few miles away? Well here is a painting of it. Have you heard the news about the Kobayashi and Teruko clan marriage? Here are some haiku written for the occasion. Inadvertently she spreads news of Heiseina to the surrounding hamlets, and from the hamlets to Heiseina, through her stories. When she returns to Heiseina she stays at her family home and mooches off of her more responsible and respectable elder sister. She always makes it back in time for festivals, where she insists that she put on the newest play she's written, play a role in local re-tellings of myths and legends, and participates in dance until she can barely move. Though she has a strong passion for all kinds of art, dance and Kabuki is her favorite pastime, so when she can she goes all out. Lately, life in the valley has been slower and more peaceful than normal. There hasn't been as many interesting stories to create art about. She wavers between pensive, nervous, irritable and outgoing. Curious She is a voracious reader, always enjoyed overhearing people gossip, and now with some freedom she has been sticking her nose into everything. She wants to learn and explore as much as possible. Tense It's very hard for Kou to relax around people. Perhaps a trait inherited from her father. Most of the time she's on alert, and when flustered or frustrated she has a habit of playing with whatever is in her hands. It will take time for her make friends and feel comfortable enough to really trust others. | Character Concept Kouta, or "Kou" as she prefers to be called, is a very sheltered girl. One night, she actually ran into a wandering Oddish. She saw it again the night after that. Gradually the two of them became friends and Kou smuggled it into her room. When it was discovered two weeks later, Kou and her father had a massive argument that led to Oddish being thrown out and Kou being "ground indefinitely." All of this leads to Kou's current situation and concept. She is a runaway from home who only has whatever she managed to stuff into her backpack. She used her small amount of money to purchase Pokéball for Oddish, who she met up with after leaving. Now the two of them head west from Cerulean City to make it on their own. Pokémon Kou's relationship with Pokémon is only just beginning. Her family has never kept Pokémon, and she'd never been allowed to play with the neighbors'. At the moment she only knows the basic facts that are taught in general education: things like all Pokémon have "types," some people use them for battling each other, they can be dangerous if you don't have a Pokémon of your own... and et cetera. Since meeting Oddish, she's been doing a lot of hands on learning which she greatly enjoys. What demonic traits he does sport include elongated ears and incisors, asymmetrical obsidian horns that sprout from his forehead, dark scales that run from his shoulder blades down his biceps and back, and a tail. His tail is not the stereotypical fork, rather it is more like a reptile's tail - thick, scaly, and long. His eyes are the same glowing, molten gold shared between all members of the Comoita family, so at least there is no denying his heritage. In another life he may have excelled as a scholar, but alas. Barbatos works with many people on a near daily basis, so he does his best to play at being charming. His brand of "charming" is a mixture of playful, friendly, and lame. It falls flat for most, but miraculously works on others. Still, many prefer him when he is all business. In such situations he is cool and calm, giving the impression that he is in control even when he is clearly not. He does not shy away from violence, and uses it liberally when negotiation fails - though it's always his second choice, preferring diplomacy or... other less savory tactics before getting physical. His temper comes as a simmer rather than an explosion, and when he does anger it is with a cold fury. His reputation precedes him in many of Geota's circles, and while he is known as a fair man he is also not one to be pushed around. Growing up with eight older siblings and a human face quickly taught him how to stand up for himself. When attending family functions or representing the Comoita he puts on airs, but his true self is more down to earth, humorous, and much more blunt. Arcana ▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔ Major: Temperance Barbatos does not show off with his arcana, and most don't even know he has one. He was only ever instructed in how to increase his family member's arcana, and so that is it's primary use. Over the years he has managed to figure out how to dim the effects of arcana as well, but only when they are very close to him. Minor: The Two of Pentacles It appears as a rather simple ring: an alabaster stone set into a band of metal. A first glance it's use seems as simple as it's appearance. When the arcana is touched to something, it "opens" that something. Barbatos uses it frequently, as with just a pass of his hand doors, chests, safes, and the like open themselves. The arcana bypasses locks and magic charms, and hasn't failed to force something open so far. Hidden rooms reveal themselves if the ring touches their entrance, and there was even one case where someone tried to swallow evidence and the ring was able to force open their mouth so Barbatos could retrieve it. |

As a Driyosh of the Vahumana Darshan, Javid has wandered the lands of Sumeru and some of its neighboring nations. He has long suspected that he was only granted his status of Driyosh as a way for his superiors to be rid of him, hoping that his nature as a storm chaser would eventually retire him for good. However, he has no evidence to support this. Nevertheless he is glad to be able to travel; experiencing other cultures firsthand is useful not only for his thesis and study, but his growth as a person. Not to mention there were all kinds of interesting, exciting things to find, and more freedom to study them - the matra's watchful eyes only reached so far outside of Sumeru's sand and forest, after all.
"Storm Chaser" is not a title earned, but rather an epithet that Javid discovered others within the Akademiya referred to him as. It's literal meaning is a person who follows after dangerous weather, be they thunderstorms, sandstorms, or the like, in order to experience or study them. On that level it isn't really true of Javid, although there was that one time when an inter-Darshan study tour comprised of Vahumana, Haravatat, and Kshahrewar students were stranded at the site of some ancient ruins during a particularly vicious storm that Javid hadn't let get in the way of his research. He'd suggested that they make use of the storm and look into how ancient and contemporary storm procedures differed, if they could find any examples during the event before heading out of the shelter. No, he suspects that the nickname only really picked up over the years as he volunteered for progressively more dangerous expeditions. All things considered, he doesn't mind it.
Javid received his vision after declaring his major field of research, finding it laid gently on his bed that same night. He considered it proof that he'd made the right choice, and a great boon to the research itself: the cultural differences between allogenes and "normal humans." He could tell that the way people treated him had changed immediately. Anthropology, history, and philosophy are all of great interest to Javid like most others in the Vahumana Darshan, and his research is just the next step; how those with a vision and those without each think, go about their lives, how they view that power, and comparing those answers within Sumeru to the answers from other nations. However, because Vahumana especially are always looking into the "why" of things, he must be careful with his notes. Looking into such mysterious forces like gods, visions, and their chosen skirts close enough to committing one of the Akademiya's "sins" that he may already be on the matra's radar.

He grew up on the slimmer side and favors practical dark colored clothing. The mark of his guild is tattooed on his spine where neck meets shoulder, and a simple patch covers the area where his left eye would be. Despite only having the one, lack of depth perception isn't a weakness of his so long as he is focusing (early mornings are the worst for it). He is dexterous, skilled with his hands, and learned all the simple magic tricks that would have delighted the friends from his childhood. He knows his way around a few types of blades, and though fist fighting isn't his forte he can throw a mean punch. Take one too. He justifies his life as a thief, working among men that have much more storied rap sheets than him, by telling himself that his parents would prefer him like this rather than in a grave beside them. Still, shame lingers. His psyche, fractured by childhood trauma, colors his relationship with both possessions and people. He tends not to keep much of anything for fear of growing attached and then losing it. He tries to keep others at a distance, never close enough that it would hurt when they inevitably left. But people are harder not to get attached to, and harder to just give away, as it were. It's impossible for him to completely close his heart off, though not for lack of trying. The ghost of the boy he used to be must be buried somewhere within him. Danyl is rough around the edges, but hard working and generally trustworthy despite his profession. He often tells people he's "a thief, not a spy," when they give him shit about his very obvious lying tell. With no real outlet for his anger he'd gained a bit of a temper as he aged, and though he isn't quick to violence he certainly doesn't shy away from it. The fire never really left him that day, its coals remained in his chest until he was old enough to stoke the flame and develop a hell of a want for vengeance. For Danyl, there is no moving forward from his past until he can cut out the part of him that hurts. Obviously cutting his heart out would kill him, so he has to remove the next best thing: the bandits that caused the pain in the first place. | C H I L D H O O D I N A R D E N F E L D C H I L D H O O D I N A R D E N F E L D The Feytin family was a peaceful and happy one. Town grocers; a thickly built husband, a plump and vibrant wife, and three healthy children with one more on the way. They lived in a large home that was always in need of some kind of repair, with an even larger garden that the whole household tended to. The patriarch held friendships far and wide through his dealings with merchants, and proof of his bonds filled the family home in the form of knick knacks and tapestry that enchanted his wife and children. It was a well loved and well lived in homestead, nestled deep in the hamlet of Ardenfeld. Danyl was the family's middle child, affectionately called "Danny" by pretty much the entire town. He spent his youth happily gathering other children together and regaling them with tales of places far outside of their little village; his father's stories, with some fun embellishments of his own. He fancied himself mature beyond his years, but he still giggled when someone ruffled his hair. He loved spending time with Mary, exploring and showing off for her. Enjoyed every argument he had with Lyndii about whether something was true or not, and making up afterward over snacks. Was always elated when Shysca from across the way was invited to visit, too young then to realize his elder brother had a crush on her. After a rocky start that involved more than a few bruises he'd even befriended the girl Teth, as close with her as any other in the village. In those days he wanted for nothing... L I F E A T T H E O R P H A N A G E L I F E A T T H E O R P H A N A G E For a long time after the fire, Danyl wished that he had burned up too. He was a boy of nine years when he arrived at the orphanage, his once vibrant personality suffocated by grief. Life in Sarinan could have been worse, but for children ripped from their homes and families and suddenly thrust into an unfamiliar city and made to live with unfamiliar people, it was a whole lot of awful. The only thing that kept Danyl from complete despair was the company of his friends and fellow survivors. In the early days of the orphanage they looked out for each other. They encouraged each other. They were each others' shoulder to cry on, some more than others. And they would always have each other. Until they didn't. One by one the Ardenfeld children left. Even though they'd promised each other that wherever they might go they would meet again at that town, Danyl felt his heart crumple more with every departure. Teth was the last, and when she asked if he remembered their promise he knew she'd leave him too. By the next night Danyl was the only one them still at the orphanage. Everything that had remained of his previous life was gone. That he never fled wasn't surprising; he was not as brave or strong as some of the other kids. That he was never adopted was to be expected; no one wanted to take in a child that had something wrong with them. During the walk to Sarinan and in the subsequent confusion of the establishment taking on so many new kids at once, the injury he'd taken during the fire had gotten worse. His left eye had been punctured, and by the time healers had gotten around to taking a look it was too late to repair it. His vision had gone completely during the five years he spent at the orphanage. When he was released into the streets of Sarinan with no where to go and no possessions to his name he was a teenager, angry and emotional. He'd gotten over his want to join his family in the next world knew now if he didn't live on in spite of everything, then his family died for nothing. So he did live, scraping by begging in the streets of Sarinan. O N W A R D: A N E W P A T H O N W A R D: A N E W P A T H Months after Danyl began roughing it as a street urchin, one of his father's merchant friends passed through town. The man had no plan to look after the boy, but he could at least give Danyl a ride to the capital city where surely opportunity awaited. That opportunity, it turned out, was being picked up by a thieves' guild. They called themselves Palla Orchids, a slightly facetious name, and they fancied themselves as 'noble thieves' stealing only from those that could afford to lose. Their captain was a man named Victor Mason who took the starving boy in. On a whim, he'd said, after the most amusing look on Danyl's face when he pointed out to the kid that pick-pocketing would fetch more coin than relying on charity. The Orchids' base was more like a criminal hostel than anything. It was hardly a home. The Orchids themselves were certainly not a family, but for most of them this place and these people were all they had. It bred a certain loyalty in them, and the same went for Danyl. With some polish Danyl made a decent thief and burglar. Decent scrapper too, after Victor and some of the other men taught him how to fight. Early on he was deeply ashamed of what he'd become. It was immediately apparent that the guild did not adhere to its noble tenets - but they were taking money and trinkets, not lives or homes. Nothing compared what their targets could be losing. Living there, being with the guild, was a whole lot easier and safer than trying to make it on his own. There, he wasn't greeted with pity or disgust. They traded jokes with him. They called him Danny. He never considered Victor as a surrogate father, but eventually he looked up to the man like one. And he'd always been so damn eager to please. He spent five more years there in Pallaviel, honing his skill. It wasn't much, but it was life. He became a lieutenant in the guild for his as of yet unfailing service, concerning himself only with providing for the guild, keeping himself alive, and keeping his ear to the ground for any leads about a certain bandit group. He fulfilled the captain's every command, whether it was doing the jobs no one else wanted or chasing down deserters before they left the city. Day to day duties kept painful memories at bay on the good days, but they stubbornly clung to him. On the tenth anniversary of the fire, Danyl requested leave, prepared a small pack, and set out for what had once been home. His heart had been hurting all these years, and it was time to cut some of the pain away. He didn't expect any of the friends from back then to remember their promise. When they inevitably didn't show up he would be able to let them go for good. |

The opposite is true in Kanto: poor soil quality means that even berries hardly grow there, let alone apricorns. Apricorns are the easiest known method of taming a wild Pokémon, their hard flesh transformed into holding areas known as "Pokémon Balls." Because of this, only the most wealthy or lucky Kantojin able to import apricorns are seen wielding Pokémon Balls, and thus their families owning more than one or two Pokémon. | ..................................................... |

CrepusculeAdditional Information
An alternate setting option. Crepuscule is an old nickname for the organization, tracing its origin back to the Roman occupation of Britannia. Apparently as an organization Crepuscule goes back even earlier than that, boasting one of the oldest collections of cooperative magi in the world, allegedly rivaling groups in China and the Middle East. The magi of Crepuscule are powerful and proud, hailing from all over Europe and beyond and tackling monsters within a wide area of the continent.
There is a clear division among the magi at Crepuscule which has historically interfered with their work before. The Crown Magi, nobility and genuine royalty dating back to Britain's oldest druids and the country's more modern royal family, have preferential status versus common British or foreign magi. Conspiracy swirls around them even outside of Britain's borders.

GhostAdditional Information
The spirit form of a human being, comprised of pure spiritual power. Whether one believes in a true after life or not, ghosts are one of the more commonly accepted facets of the supernatural among common folk. When a person's soul becomes disconnected from their body for any reason, their memories and personality often stay with the ghost - that is, they "become" a ghost. Like many paranormal aspects of life, the ghost is not entirely understood. Mysteries may always remain, both because of the difficulty of study and the spiritual faith of humanity.
Rarely there have been claims of ghost sightings belonging to animals, and despite their spiritual power there have been no ghosts of monsters observed - though that may be because certain monsters already exhibit ghost-like traits. As they are made of spiritual power, the stronger an individual's power then the stronger the presence of their ghost. People with weak spiritual power result in ghosts that flicker or fade away, or even some that do not manifest at all. A stronger ghost can remain in the world if they choose to, speak and think like they did in life, and with enough power even interact with physical objects. Over time, they will eventually dissipate or move on.
The ghosts of magi are unsurprisingly strong, but their lives battling monsters result in many of these ghosts being consumed or destroyed by monsters in the field. Ghosts are tied to a human's spiritual core, and one might say they even reside in said core, so a core destroyed before death will have dire consequences on one's ghost. Even if a ghost manages to form from a healthy core, it will normally not wield the same power it did when connected to a physical body.
Ghosts can absorb spiritual power and grow stronger in much the same way that monsters can, but this process more often than not results in the warping of the soul into an evil spirit. For this reason, the fact that ghosts can grow and transform in this way is a secret even among magi. Evil spirits are banished from existence in the same way that monsters are destroyed. Old ghosts are encouraged to move on before they discover this ability themselves. It is not the only ability of ghosts, as haunting and possession are common stories told throughout history. Experimenting with these abilities are frowned upon if not outright illegal in many places.
GLOAMAdditional Information
An alternate setting option. A mirror of the country itself, GLOAM is notorious for not utilizing a standard throughout any of branches. From East coast to West, North to South, highly urban areas to rural plains, each unit of GLOAM handles their work in different ways. The ability level of American magi swing wildly from barely better than a fortune teller to individuals who consider natural law to be mere suggestion.
GLOAM places more emphasis on individual performance than family lineage, and gives incentives to magi as though they were working as common contractors. In essence, this is exactly the case, and it is not uncommon for a mage to be poached by another branch. Though once loyalty is earned, it is a hard broken thing. Unlike older institutions, GLOAM did not get its start formed from indigenous groups of magi. Native magi have their own methods, and though their relationship with GLOAM is not without its issues the bureau is more cooperative than most government institutions of the US.

The concept of a "mage type" is not a new one, but being assigned such categories in a more official capacity is a relatively modern development. Though every mage's power is more or less unique, the way in which they manifest said power will often overlap with others. It is in this way that magi are categorized, and many have embraced these labels.
Below are listed a few of the more prevalent categories of magi, though they are by no means the only types:
- BEAST BLOODED
Magi who's Moloch's Blood runs thicker than most, for better or worse. Said to be the earliest form of power that magi utilized, their abilities embody bestial traits or draw power from the very monsters they fight. The strongest of this type of magi do both. Sensory enhancements, physical transformations, commanding familiars, and more.- SOUL SUBSTANTIALIZER
Magi who have learned to harness the power of their ghost forms while still alive. Their abilities are often esoteric or abstract; consciousness and immateriality, existence and distortion. They wield their own souls, focusing internally or imbuing them externally. Astral projection, clairvoyance, psychometry, mind and motion, and more.- ARCHE AETHERIST
Magi who are the closest to what a layman might consider a magic user. Their abilities likened to wuxing, mahābhūta, and classical elements, these magi draw their power from the primal earth and natural law. The creation and manipulation of fire, water, air, earth, metals... but also space, aether, and more.- ESSENCE EVOCATOR
Magi who are able to exert control over spiritual power itself, using their own internal alchemy as conduit for their abilities and influencing the spiritual power of others. Called fangxiangshi, onmyoji, and exorcists, they can draw from the leylines of the earth and the purity of their own 'spiritual vessels.' Consecration, power fields, binding, purification, and more.
MakaiAdditional Information
The study of Makai is an ongoing endeavor, one that has reached a stand still in the modern era. Being a purely paranormal phenomenon, they follow natural law even less than monsters or humanity do. Researchers that have dedicated their lives to learning about Makai disagree with each other to this day on what, exactly, Makai truly are and how they interact with the world.
Some claim them to be an infection that takes hold on even the smallest molecules, allowing it to cling not only to surfaces but to the very air, creating the "pockets." Some say they are the original form that spiritual power takes, physical and yet not, and that is why it can alter what it comes into contact with. Some are convinced they are ruptures in reality caused by that same spiritual power, and if left fed into instead of destabilized they could lead to other planes of existence. And still others are content with the simple explanation that Makai are the mysterious, natural byproducts of a Moloch's influence in the world, corrupting the spiritual power around it.
Whether a run of the mill mage concerns themselves with speculation and conjecture, there are hard facts they will always keep in mind regarding Makai:
1. They are formed in areas of high spiritual power output, which is why the sites of battles or the presence of powerful monsters are normally the catalysts of their creation. There are records and reports on where and when Makai have formed, the information becoming spotty the further back one looks.
2. When they do form, it is almost instantly. Magi that have been present at the formation of a Makai report a drop in temperature and a brief feeling of dread before a black bubble forms and balloons to maximum size in mere moments, completely silently. Attempts to interrupt or contain the formation before completion have so far always failed.
3. The size of a Makai is influenced by the spiritual power used to create it. Though all Makai form from high levels of power in an area, "high" is a vague measure. The smallest Makai on record were 6x6 meters (about 20x20 ft), while the largest are alleged to have consumed entire towns.
4. Makai cannot be directly destroyed; or at least, attempts to do so have always failed. Makai are instead destabilized when the catalyst for their creation is destroyed. Usually, this means that killing the monster that caused the formation (or otherwise rendering its ability to use spiritual power null) will cut off the source of a Makai's "fuel," and it will collapse on its own over time. The longer a Makai is allowed to exist before being destabilized, and the longer it will linger in the world before disappearing.
5. Makai also cannot be artificially created, though this is with the caveat that attempts to create one intentionally have never bared fruit. In the minds of many researchers, the risks of creating a Makai artificially or through purposeful action do not outweigh the benefit that studying one in a controlled environment. It may be requested of magi in the field to leave a small, isolated Makai alone for this purpose, though whether these magi oblige such requests is up to the individual. Normally, swift destruction is as soon as possible is protocol.
6. Being inside of a Makai disorients the senses, though whether this is a direct effect of Makai on those trapped in it -especially to keep those inside of it from leaving- or merely a symptom of its traits is debated. Sound is muffled within a Makai, and no light survives inside making vision impossible for all but monsters and magi. Even then, the sense of sight is warped. Smell, taste, and touch are affected by a "stinging" sensation, annoying but not painful and thus simple to tune out for experienced magi. It is thought that this strange sensation is the Makai's corrosive effect, but this is not confirmed.
7. Whether large or small, all Makai are indeed "corrosive." They break down the environments they envelop, turning buildings to ruin, roads and stones to dust, and dust into nothing. The process is not a quick a one, but the longer a Makai lasts the stronger its corrosive ability becomes. Living things are also broken down while inside a Makai in a similar way, from the inside out, via a condition that has been named "Makai Sickness." Even spiritual power is broken down inside of a Makai... or it may be more accurate to say, it is absorbed to continue to fuel the bubble's existence, and the act of breaking down all matter within is a means to take in as much spiritual power as possible.
Makai SicknessAdditional Information
In the past when people spoke of suffering from being cursed, they normally referred to those afflicted with Makai Sickness. It is not contagious, the only way to contract it being prolonged exposure to the inside of a Makai. It acts much like a disease or infection, targeting the spiritual power -and spiritual core- of living beings. It corrodes the pathways of the body leading to the spiritual core until feeding on the core itself, after which it rapidly eats through the blood and tissue of the body. Humans, monsters, and animals are all susceptible, and creatures without strong spiritual power succumb very quickly. There is no known cure for Makai Sickness, and death is the most common outcome for those afflicted with it.
Long term suffering of Makai Sickness is rare. A survivor of Makai Sickness is not unscathed by the experience. Their body mutates in large or small part - an effect of the Sickness being supernatural in nature in the first place. These survivors never change in the same ways, each affliction unique to the sufferer. They also face as of yet irreparable damage to their spiritual pathways, which can have an effect on their use of spiritual power. More than that, the remnants of the Sickness that remain makes them more vulnerable to being affected by Makai Sickness again, their survival chances near zero if they were to "relapse."
Strictly speaking, saying that the Sickness "feeds" is misleading. Magi experts on Makai research disagree on whether Makai Sickness is alive in the way a virus is, or if it more similar to radiation sickness and only seems to evolve due to its supernatural nature. In reality it shares traits of both, but either way it weakens its sufferers until death or dysmorphogenesis.

A "monster" is exactly what you may be thinking: creatures from the myths and folklore of our real world. Stories of demons, dragons, fae, yokai, and more; from werewolves and harpies to devils, krakens, the undead to even just gigantic, belligerent predators. Most are solitary beings, but at times they can form small groups and even work together. As stated, what sets a monster apart from an animal is its ability to wield spiritual power, much like how human magi can. And what separates monsters from each other are their various levels of brain power. At current, there are two levels of this:
1. The intelligence level between different species. Like the animal kingdom that humanity is part of, different types of monsters have different brain capacities. One can reasonably assume that a basilisk that they encounter will have a lower level of intelligence versus a dragon.
2. The intelligence level between different individuals of the same species. Unlike the animal kingdom whose members are sorted in class, order, family, etc., monster classification is not so robust. Two monsters both considered to be werewolves may differ greatly from each other, especially where there intelligence level is concerned. One may be more beastly than its cousin, and another may even possess the ability to speak.
In general the more humanoid a monster is, the smarter it is, which seems to suggest a similar evolutionary path to the ones taken by humans. Monsters that are capable of higher thought also consider those more beast-like monsters to be akin to "mere animals." Intelligent monsters of this level can feel and understand some of the same emotions that humans do, however their base instincts will never disappear. All monsters are possessed by their hunger, without exception.
Eating and growing are how a monster gains strength. Gaining strength for survival is hardwired into a monster's brain. They use cunning, technique, or pure strength to capture prey, as all monsters must continue to consume less their hunger eventually drives them to autosarcophagy. Flora and fauna can only sate them for so long; only spiritual power -and the beings that contain it- can truly sustain a monster. Thus, the everlasting conflict between monster and man.
Rarely, a monster may evolve after consuming large amounts of spiritual power. Their evolution is varied, as even individuals of the same species that undergo evolution will not change in the same ways. Some grow larger, some develop powerful paranormal abilities, and some ascend to a higher plane of intelligence. It is the latter that is the most dangerous, as a smarter monster is a deadlier monster. Magi prioritize putting down these monsters over others in order to prevent the potential birth of new Moloch. It is only a hypothesis that monsters can evolve into Moloch, as this has never been observed during recorded history.
More common is the formation of a Makai, though these are created during a release of large amounts of spiritual power rather than consumption of it. Monsters play a part in the formation of Makai most often when they come into contact with each other or with magi during their hunts and unleash their power during battle.
Throughout history there have been tales of monsters ravaging kingdoms and villages, but in the modern era those living in large cities will never see a monster during their life time. In fact, to this day many humans the world over consider monsters to be just stories. This is in part due the majority of monsters being nocturnal, solitary creatures that take their prey swiftly or stealthily within their own territories. A monster preserves its own life even over the lives of its offspring, and will generally avoid provoking stronger monsters or magi... unless they are particularly aggressive or believe they can win. Of course, monsters encroaching into cities is nothing new. Even skeptics tend to stay indoors in rural areas when the hour grows too late.

Sol puts forth the image of a radiant pretty boy prince charming, so it can come as a surprise that Sol is, in fact, a girl. For a while now the persona of "Sol" was her go-to in all kinds of RPGs. She got some kind of catharsis in embodying the perfect guy that seemed so unattainable in real life. Maybe it was a little pathetic, but being Sol was the next best thing. Pariah Online was no different - this was her ideal. Of course the knight in shining armor had to do more than just look the part. She worked hard and became strong, dedicated herself to the protection of others, and treated every girl, whether they were a Wayfarer or a Denizen, as a princess... ...for the most part. Because being Sol was not so much playing a character as it was projecting her own wants into the world. The same simple, boisterous girl that she was 'out there' was still 'in here.' She spoke her mind, called people out, and got into arguments. Even other girls weren’t spared if they annoyed her too much. Accolades from former party members for her performance in battle content and the fans she has gained due to her knightly actions outside of it keep her good reputation well preserved, though for some it's always funny to see Sol cuss a guy out and then turn around and speak sweetly to a girl like it didn't happen. Sol isn't perfect, but she damn well tries to be. And she quite enjoyed the attention she got as her popularity climbed higher and higher. It wasn't unusual that some days she got more party invites than she could keep up with. Her heart fluttered after each stressful, but successful dungeon clear, or when she captured the attention of a pretty girl. Abundant harvests also yielded enough that the family that owned it could even export some produce for extra cash, though they preferred to keep things local so the islanders didn't have to rely much on mainland imports. Unfortunately, the above hasn't been the case in a long time. Nowadays even the property's namesake - the "Miller's Mill" - has broken down and remains in disrepair. It started with in the twins' grandparents' time; the land began to lose something, something vital, and the once flourishing fields started to decline. Over years the crop yields grew smaller and smaller until some just stopped growing altogether. The animals were affected too, the quality of milk and eggs suffering as they became lethargic. Was it a coincidence that the vitality of the farm lessened when the population of Starlight Cove really began seeing changes as more and more people left permanently for the mainland? No one can say for sure, but the superstitious say that the land itself has lost its luster, its magic, all over the island. If that was really the case, then of course the people that depended the most on that land experienced the 'curse' firsthand. The Miller twins don't believe in curses though. Their namesake, a stone windmill, sat on a hill nearing the property's edge. Anyone visiting the farm would be able to see the large spinning sails from any corner. It's a shame the twins can't get anyone out to fix it in the current generation, as it now stands as a monument to just how far the farm has fallen. When Erin's parents all but gave up on the farm and planned their move to the mainland a couple years ago, she refused to go with them. And if Erin was staying, then needless to say her brother was too; the twins had always stuck together and had no plans to separate any time soon. Heated discussions turned into arguments, but in the end, the family split up. With a couple of jobs lined up through friends and connections, their parents headed into the city across the water... and the twins were allowed to stubbornly stay behind. The farm wasn't worth much in its current state, and since they wouldn't make much money selling it remains in the family's possession, technically still in their father's name. Though repeated failures hit them harder and harder each year, the twins remain optimistic that they can turn things around. They'll joke about it, smile and blame things on each others' black thumbs, but its clear in the smudges on their faces and dirt under their nails how hard they're working to restore some 'magic' to the area through the food they plan to grow. So far the only crop that's managed to survive is hardy winter wheat, and the only livestock that remain are a few chickens and one aging cow. |

She only has to see the ability being used in order to replicate the action exactly, but touching another person allows for a much deeper, more complete copying. For example, after watching an artist paint a portrait Ava will be able to paint the exact same piece down to the stroke. If she touches the artist, she has all of their artistic ability and can create anything she likes with the same level of skill. If she watched someone conjure a flame in their hand, she can conjure one too - and if she touches the flame user, she can wield fire as though she was born with the ability. Technically she isn't stealing these powers as their original users still retain them even after she copies them, although it would be pretty interesting if she could somehow tweak her own power to mess with those she takes from. She also cannot keep these abilities indefinitely. Ava likens her power to a sponge: it can hold a surprising amount of water, but eventually it has to be rung out. Normally the copied abilities disappear after sleep (whether natural or knocked out), but she can choose to 'ring herself out' early. Once the "bomb" goes off, it takes a little time for Nagomu to wall off his feelings again. | Physical Description Neither Nagomu's looks nor frame are all that interesting. He is similar in height to his peers, standing at about the average 169cm (5'7"), and his physique is the same as any high school boy in sports. He isn't particularly good or bad looking. His few facial scars, one on the edge of his chin and the other on his cheek bone on the same side, are barely noticeable unless one is looking closely. He rest of him is concealed beneath his school uniform, which is usually buttoned up in accordance with school rules. His eyes, though an unexciting dark brown, are rather intense. The thing that stands out the most about Nagomu is his mop of bleached and dyed hair. It's platinum blonde so light it may as well be white, contrasting his dark eyebrows. Personal Story Nagomu is returning to high school for his second year after having been suspended for the last few months of his first. The situation surrounding the suspension is the subject of a few rumors, but seeing as the other student involved transferred schools and Nagomu himself is tight-lipped about it, the truth remains unknown to all but a seldom few. "Nago-kun," as some of his closer friends and a few affectionate senpai call him, only started practicing kendo in his third year of middle school. Before then he wasn't involved in any after school clubs. He isn't particularly passionate about the sport, nor is he a hidden prodigy. Though he's never told anyone about it, his reason for joining the club is a simple one: to instill self-discipline in himself. Not quite as simple is the reason for wanting to instill this discipline in the first place. It's not to look good on a future resume, practice being around the club's many girls, or fix his slipping grades (though it actually did help a little with the latter). Nagomu's number one pet peeve is being compared to his father, and "disciplined" is that man's antithesis. A drunk, lecher, and gambling addict, Nagomu's father has made his home life unpleasant to say the least. Unpleasant and incredibly chaotic. The household's atmosphere and finances swing back and forth as wildly as the man's mood. Some months they live off of konbini meals and dwindling savings, in others an incredible windfall sees a fully stocked fridge, paid bills, new electronics and appliances to replace the old ones that had to be sold. Some days Nagomu and his mother are lavished with gifts, attention and platitudes, while others they walk on eggshells while the patriarch pretends he has no wife and probably couldn't care less if his son never came home again - might even prefer it that way. The family used to move around a lot to escape various debts, but thankfully they've stayed put for the last couple of years. The stability provided by a steady home and rigid school schedule greatly improved Nagomu's day to day, and picking up a disciplined martial art helped him to feel that he had some control of his life. The repetitive focus of practicing kata calms him. His mother's role in all of this is as his best friend. Unlike her husband she always puts her son first, and helping her out is one of the few reasons Nagomu would miss a club practice. There are a lot of things that his fellow club members don't know about Nagomu, like the fact that he can cook and that he's really bad at English. During his first year cut short he didn't get to know most of them that well, and though he doesn't plan on getting much closer in his second year either, only time will tell how things play out. |

At its height Summit fielded dozens of successful heroes, and though it still holds the image rights to many legacies the company has scaled back in recruiting new talent for a long time now, focusing on maintaining their current brands and producing theater plays and feature length films in contract with non-Summit heroes. That is until the surprise introduction of Astraeus, a once abandoned hero concept recently revived. Some within the company and without hope Astraeus will be the catalyst of Summit's return to creating Neo-Astraea's finest heroes. Others reject this old fashioned hero and await the inevitable failure. Unsurprising, really, growing up in the City of Heroes. Those strong, flashy men and women who stood up to bad guys of all stripes and made Neo-Astraea a safer place every day... What better role models could there be? As a youngster, Cas emulated them and everything they stood for. And then, the opportunity to see them up close. Really see them, not just at one of the many meet and greets Cas made his parents take him to. A villainous attack taking place during a street parade, one that the Lagrond family happened to be attending. A swift response from a hero nearby, dazzling their impromptu audience as they engaged their opponent in battle in front of the many recording cameras. It was exciting, amazing; until the cheers turned to shrieks, and fanfare to fire. For a majority of the city, the event was an unfortunate case of a villain going rogue, lashing out at innocent bystanders. Even to those that had been there, collective belief of the rest of Neo-Astraea's citizens influenced their memories. Only the most grievously affected know the truth: the attending hero's publicity stunt gone horribly wrong. The Lagrond family returned home with one less parent, a daughter robbed of her ability to walk, a chunk of a cash settlement and a signed NDA. Even after that, Cas still loved heroes... though his admiration had changed more to what they represented, rather than how they operated. He still wanted to be a hero, too, but someday when he finally made it he would be a better one than the fakes just seeking fame and fortune. If they spent their time actually helping people instead of playing pretend, then they could prevent real tragedies instead of risking creating them in the first place. From his earliest teenage years, Caspian worked at being an earnest hero. In between classes and shifts at the family shop, he trained and went out helping people whenever he could. It started as rescuing cats from trees or helping neighbors move. As he got older and made a small name for himself in his and nearby neighborhoods it evolved into protecting girls from aggressive pursuers, breaking up fights, and talking situations down before things escalated. He didn't have the resources to truly chase his dream to become a well respected hero whose words couldn't be easily brushed off... but he was content to be an 'indie hero.' At least until the shop started to fail, and that settlement money had long dried up. Then auditions made their way onto Cas' daily schedules, begrudgingly so. But what self-respecting profit focused company would take on an unknown indie hero with no following outside of a few neighborhoods, no gimmick, no marketability? None but the most desperate start ups would, and even those didn't work out. Enter a certain old man, a shop regular who commonly chatted with Cas about their favorite talents and heard the young man out when he complained. A man who longed for the 'old days' of true people's champions, and who on the store's final day handed the aspiring hero a business card and a plot for a return to form for Neo-Astraea's heroes. Who needed niche characters, when one genuinely good hero could pull in numbers with broad appeal? Who needed robots and lasers when the greatest of history's heroes protected people with only their body and defeated evil with only their fists?! ...well, couldn't argue with that. Though their goals didn't entirely line up, Cas wasn't one to look a gift horse in the mouth especially when his family needed funds. If this was the path to upholding justice, he would take it as far as he could. Maybe he would even get the chance to change this virtue signalling system from the inside. Months of planning, preparation, and promotion have led to this: Cas' imminent debut on his twentieth birthday, reborn as the hubristically named hero Astraeus. He has a lot of good word of mouth going for him, but usually forgets to record himself and has to rely on others happening to do it or CCTV much to his agency's chagrin. He grew up on the slimmer side and favors practical dark colored clothing. Despite only having the one, lack of depth perception isn't a weakness of his so long as he is focusing (early mornings are the worst for it). He is dexterous, skilled with his hands, and learned all the simple magic tricks that would have delighted the friends from his childhood. He knows his way around a few types of blades, and though fist fighting isn't his forte he can throw a mean punch. Take one too. He justifies his life as a thief, working among men that have much more storied rap sheets than him, by telling himself that his parents would prefer him like this rather than in a grave beside them. Still, shame lingers. His psyche, fractured by childhood trauma, colors his relationship with both possessions and people. The ghost of the boy he used to be must be buried somewhere within him. Danyl is rough around the edges, but hard working and generally trustworthy despite his profession. He often tells people he's "a thief, not a spy," when they give him shit about his very obvious lying tell. With no real outlet for his anger he'd gained a bit of a temper as he aged, and though he isn't quick to violence he certainly doesn't shy away from it. The fire never really left him that day, its coals remained in his chest until he was old enough to stoke the flame and develop a hell of a want for vengeance. For Danyl, there is no moving forward from his past until he can cut out the part of him that hurts. Obviously cutting his heart out would kill him, so he has to remove the next best thing: the bandits that caused the pain in the first place. | C H I L D H O O D I N A R D E N F E L D C H I L D H O O D I N A R D E N F E L D The Feytin family was a peaceful and happy one. Town grocers; a thickly built husband, a plump and vibrant wife, and three healthy children with one more on the way. They lived in a large home that was always in need of some kind of repair, with an even larger garden that the whole household tended to. The patriarch held friendships far and wide through his dealings with merchants, and proof of his bonds filled the family home in the form of knick knacks and tapestry that enchanted his wife and children. It was a well loved and well lived in homestead, nestled deep in the hamlet of Ardenfeld. Danyl was the family's middle child, affectionately called "Danny" by pretty much the entire town. He spent his youth happily gathering other children together and regaling them with tales of places far outside of their little village; his father's stories, with some fun embellishments of his own. He fancied himself mature beyond his years, but he still giggled when someone ruffled his hair. He loved spending time with Mary, exploring and showing off for her. Enjoyed every argument he had with Lyndii about whether something was true or not, and making up afterward over snacks. Was always elated when Shysca from across the way was invited to visit, too young then to realize his elder brother had a crush on her. After a rocky start that involved more than a few bruises he'd even befriended the girl Teth, as close with her as any other in the village. In those days he wanted for nothing... L I F E A T T H E O R P H A N A G E L I F E A T T H E O R P H A N A G E For a long time after the fire, Danyl wished that he had burned up too. He was a boy of nine years when he arrived at the orphanage, his once vibrant personality suffocated by grief. Life in Sarinan could have been worse, but for children ripped from their homes and families and suddenly thrust into an unfamiliar city and made to live with unfamiliar people, it was a whole lot of awful. The only thing that kept Danyl from complete despair was the company of his friends and fellow survivors. In the early days of the orphanage they looked out for each other. They encouraged each other. They were each others' shoulder to cry on, some more than others. And they would always have each other. Until they didn't. One by one the Ardenfeld children left. Even though they'd promised each other that wherever they might go they would meet again at that town, Danyl felt his heart crumple more with every departure. Teth was the last, and when she asked if he remembered their promise he knew she'd leave him too. By the next night Danyl was the only one them still at the orphanage. Everything that had remained of his previous life was gone. That he never fled wasn't surprising; he was not as brave or strong as some of the other kids. That he was never adopted was to be expected; no one wanted to take in a child that had something wrong with them. During the walk to Sarinan and in the subsequent confusion of the establishment taking on so many new kids at once, the injury he'd taken during the fire had gotten worse. His left eye had been punctured, and by the time healers had gotten around to taking a look it was too late to repair it. His vision had gone completely during the five years he spent at the orphanage. When he was released into the streets of Sarinan with no where to go and no possessions to his name he was a teenager, angry and emotional. He'd gotten over his want to join his family in the next world knew now if he didn't live on in spite of everything, then his family died for nothing. So he did live, scraping by begging in the streets of Sarinan. O N W A R D: A N E W P A T H O N W A R D: A N E W P A T H Months after Danyl began roughing it as a street urchin, one of his father's merchant friends passed through town. The man had no plan to look after the boy, but he could at least give Danyl a ride to the capital city where surely opportunity awaited. That opportunity, it turned out, was being picked up by a thieves' guild. They called themselves Palla Orchids, a slightly facetious name, and they fancied themselves as 'noble thieves' stealing only from those that could afford to lose. Their captain was a man named Victor Mason who took the starving boy in. On a whim, he'd said, after the most amusing look on Danyl's face when he pointed out to the kid that pick-pocketing would fetch more coin than relying on charity. The Orchids' base was more like a criminal hostel than anything. It was hardly a home. The Orchids themselves were certainly not a family, but for most of them this place and these people were all they had. It bred a certain loyalty in them, and the same went for Danyl. With some polish Danyl made a decent thief and burglar. Decent scrapper too, after Victor and some of the other men taught him how to fight. Early on he was deeply ashamed of what he'd become. It was immediately apparent that the guild did not adhere to its noble tenets - but they were taking money and trinkets, not lives or homes. Nothing compared what their targets could be losing. Living there, being with the guild, was a whole lot easier and safer than trying to make it on his own. There, he wasn't greeted with pity or disgust. They traded jokes with him. They called him Danny. He never considered Victor as a surrogate father, but eventually he looked up to the man like one. And he'd always been so damn eager to please. He spent five more years there in Pallaviel, honing his skill. It wasn't much, but it was life. He became a lieutenant in the guild for his as of yet unfailing service, concerning himself only with providing for the guild, keeping himself alive, and keeping his ear to the ground for any leads about a certain bandit group. He fulfilled the captain's every command, whether it was doing the jobs no one else wanted or chasing down deserters before they left the city. Day to day duties kept painful memories at bay on the good days, but they stubbornly clung to him. On the tenth anniversary of the fire, Danyl requested leave, prepared a small pack, and set out for what had once been home. His heart had been hurting all these years, and it was time to cut some of the pain away. He didn't expect any of the friends from back then to remember their promise. He traveled with food, clothes, and a sword he was good enough to use for self defense. What he did not bring with him was any desire to protect the realm or its citizens, his goal driven only by self interest. Maybe that was the reason he failed his trial, miserably so. Beaten and humiliated, Ashraf returned home to Akoth where his family welcomed him with open arms. Somehow it was that which hurt the most, finding that the only person disappointed in him was himself. The only reason Ashraf had ventured out to become a knight in the first place was to gain some status on behalf of the In'nalai. They were an old family in the Triumvirate, one of skilled glass makers and blowers who had practiced their trade since before Akoth's establishment. They had always been a small family, both in size and influence, forced to get into the mercantile business in order not to be taken advantage of by larger, wealthier clans. Ashraf would eventually take over as head of the family, and though he was one of the most talented in it at their artisanal craft, he was inept at the business side of affairs for the most part. He learned much better with his hands, rather than through lecture or literature, and unfortunately economics was not something he could hold. Seeing as his father was still hale and had quite a few more years left in him until retirement, Ashraf conceived of a plan to strengthen the family's standing when he inevitably took over even if his mercantile skills weren't up to snuff: a career as one of the realm's knights. It would offer the In'nalai many advantages: prove the next head of the clan a man of valor and strength, instill the thought that the family was skilled not just in their trade but in battle as well, and gain the prestige of the wardens to make any unscrupulous merchant or noble thing twice before messing with them. Not to mention that during the time Ashraf planned to spend in knighthood, his father could use 'to teach his younger sisters the business side of things instead of wasting time trying to instill it in his dense son' (Ashraf's words). Having vowed to return to the wardens and get them to recognize him, Ashraf poured all his time and effort into improving himself. His martial arts training was intense but necessary, though putting himself into the mindset of a protector was still hard for him. Over the years he worked, taking his goal much more seriously this time, and whenever he needed to cool down from warden training he threw himself into the heat of the family's glass furnace. At eighteen he felt he was ready to try again, and once more set foot on the road from Akoth to Atutania. Even if not the most physically imposing man, Ashraf's training as honed his body in strength and flexibility, and his trade made him adaptable. Now he is fairly adept with using a spear and javelin, though it must be said he's never had to actually use it in a fight with serious consequence. He has high heat tolerance, high lung capacity, and a strong work ethic. He is also very good with his hands. Writing, drawing, whittling, and other such hobbies are within his means to master. And of course he is a master at blowing and shaping glass for both practical and artistic uses. He is a tactile learner and can quickly pick up almost anything one needs dexterity for. His mother often said that he had some kind of eidetic memory, only with his hands instead of his eyes. As of now, he has not awakened to his magical abilities. |

Kazuo had learned how to make himself superficially easy to talk to a long time ago and yet he was not above joining in on some mean-spirited teasing, both of which helped cement his status in the school's hierarchy by his second year. Learning how to keep in someone's good graces meant he could just as easily get under their skin, and if he had to tear others down to build himself up, he would. There were a lot of benefits to keeping himself well liked, after all, and he'd ended up with a lot of people that seemed to like him. More than anything though it was his apparent fearlessness that earned the respect of his classmates. In social matters and physical challenges both, Kazuo never backed down. He took on any and every class dare and performed increasingly risky stunts. He did it for himself, not them; looking cool in front of his peers was really just a fortunate side-effect. Kazuo liked when pulling breath was a little achy, needed to hear his own pulse pound in his ears, all so that he could prove something unspoken to himself. He knew it was only a matter of time before something happened again. Before some part of him he was supposed to pretend wasn't there showed through, or he lost track of who to be and when. It was a matter of time, but it wasn't now. Right now he's subbing in one of Hashiguchi's sports teams and gently letting a girl who'd asked him out down. Right now he's leaping into rivers and growing hyacinths in the school's garden. Though grounded and friendly for the most part, Auri tends to snap when he feels pressured and will definitely argue when its warranted. He is steadfast, dependable, and fiercely protective of the people he loves. Also generally optimistic, if a little dim-witted, or at least that's what's been said about him. Due to his background he is also very adaptable and does not shy away from dirty work or fights, especially on behalf of someone else. Over the past year he's found loneliness make its way into his overall personality too. Before now he's always been together with his family, no matter what shape it took, but now on his own he finds he isn't sure what to do with himself. Mostly he's dealt with it, and the myriad of other negative emotions he's bottled up, by taking on more and more work. B A C K S T O R Y - S H A P E C H A N G E R B A C K S T O R Y - S H A P E C H A N G E R The hamlet of Hailstone was so named for the rocks and pebbles that would rain down from the mountain that it sat at the base of. It was a small mining village about a half day's walk from the larger Bowcomb Town, where residents could bring their goods for trade. It wasn't particularly poor all things considered. Due to the location, the people that lived there often thought that if disaster were to strike it would surely come in the form of a rock slide that buried them. As it turned out, that would not be the case. One could easily guess what the later part of Auri's childhood was like if they paid any attention to the political maneuvering of the continent's nations. Refugee from his hometown with his father and brother, they traveled south with other family groups in a cycle of settling in new towns and fleeing war. Then, just after things got particularly bad, it was himself, his pa, and his siblings. They kept moving, doing all kinds of work to keep themselves fed, staying in campsites rather than villages, accumulating chunks of experience in may kinds of situations; they were survivors. When they finally hit the border, it was just Auri and Albi - his youngest sister. Auri joined the Adventurer's Guild more out necessity than anything else. They accepted applicants of any status, and taking jobs was a reliable way to make money. If he did well he'd gain rank and reputation, and more status meant more pay and better opportunities. At first Auri split time between Guild work and other odd labor in order to support Albi to the best of his ability. Eventually they could afford to send the clever kid to a proper school, and when she left for the boarding academy Auri shifted to dedicate his full attention to adventuring. His choices left him little time to experiment with his own capabilities, and combined with the general impression he left on fellow guildmates it cemented Auri as a simple one-note adventurer. He had no reason to disbelieve the evaluation. Still, it remains steady income and over time he's even grown to enjoy the work. He remains a registered adventurer with the class designation of Fighter, bound for a large scale expedition in the coming days. |
