Vega Family - The Vega family has humble beginnings in Pines Holler. They immigrated from Mexico sometime in the 1950s where the grandparents of Stella and Luna came with their parents. Arturo and Paola Vega established roots when they came to live in Pine Holler with their two kids. This generation of the Vega family spent almost all of their earnings buying a lot of land on what is now known as Miner Street and a small shop downtown that would be known as Two Bits Pawnshop. Over the years, that lot of land would become their house on 143 Miner Street and Two Bits would be passed down to their kids and their kids' kids.

For the longest time, Stella used to dream of romance and a life that she would have when she was able to spread her wings. Always the hopeless romantic, always the forever-optimist. Everyone who knew her personally or just in a “oh yeah, Stella! I know her” kinda way that made you hear of her, stories of a girl with the brightest eyes for a better life, for positivity that knew no limits, and a girl who always was crushing on the shiniest object that came across her path. She was always chasing the fairy tale ending that she envisioned for herself. A disney princess stuck in hell because there was almost no way for her to get out.
To her friends, she was loyal stella. A star in the night sky always there even if they didn’t know it. To her peers who didn’t know her on a personal level but still knew her, she was always willing to lend a helping hand. Most of that remains true to this day. She was someone that never let the cruelty of the world break her spirit and she still is that person. She’s still a dreamer. She’s still a hopeless romantic, but somewhere along the way, the hopeless part is more dominant. Life didn’t turn out exactly the way she planned. It led her away and after so many broken dreams, she started to think more as a realist than an optimist.

I used to dream of the life I would live when I grew up. When I was little girl, my heart was set beyond Pines, beyond the bars of wood life, beyond the constraints of the shackles of mediocre coffee from Lou’s, the slow expansion outside of mom and pop restaurants. I wanted more for myself. More than the pawn shop my family owned. But I don’t think it was going ever to be in the cards for me. At a point, I resigned to that fact and tried to make the most of it.
I come from a small family. Just me, mami, papi, my little sister, Luna, and the business we owned. I grew up in Pines Holler, the small town in North Carolina that everyone forgot about. Or at least that’s what I thought. When you’re little, you think a lot of things aren’t true. You think that life is great no matter how much or little you might have. My parents taught me to dream big but always keep a layer of realism in your mind. They didn’t want me to lose big dreams because they knew who I was, but more importantly, they knew how I was. For most of my life, I would always keep my mind positive. This town was cruel sometimes and a lot of my friends over the years learned that life never went the way they planned. The same applied to me, but I’m getting ahead of myself.
The earlier years in my life was as perfect as it could get. Being in a small town, that meant everyone I knew from the moment I was in Miss Sue’s kindergarten class to the moment I graduated high school were always around. And being that I knew just about everyone, some people I thought of as friends became distant acquaintances and some of them, like Gotye said, they became someone I used to know.
It’s the sad affair we have with life, isn’t it? Those who we held close to our hearts and those who brought us the most joy could also be the source of a great sadness. That’s a lesson I learned the hard way.
Later in my upbringing, it was clear to those who still stuck by my side that I was a dreamer. Mami and Papi were right, of course. They never were wrong about being judges of people. They had eyes more observant than I could ever dream. Which is why it was one of the most heartbreaking things to ever happen to me when that drunk driver ran them off of the street. Just three blocks away from Miner Street and about as much distance away from Huskers. I was fourteen when it happened. I don’t know if they were on their way to home, where my grandparents were taking care of Luna and I was home, writing. Writing and dreaming.
They said it was instant. They said that Ivette and Tomas Vega didn’t suffer. They said, they said, they said.
It didn’t matter what the cops said. It didn’t matter what anyone said. Not Abuelo or Abuela. Not Luna who cried for days and all I could do was be strong for her. What mattered was I lost the two people who always saw the real me. Was that person killed with them? Was this the realism that they wanted me to keep in mind? Honestly, I didn’t know. Still to this day, I still don’t. I needed to be strong and I knew that. I tried to lean on friends, but whether it was me trying not to show that I was broken inside or simply other things happening at the same time that I was grieving, but some friends distaned themselves from me. A boy I was dating dumped me and, though I now understand it wasn’t the best reaction, but at that time, I was going through way too much and bottling way too much inside that I exploded on him.
And this wasn’t a private moment either. People saw me yell at him and they saw me rip into him. I cried and yelled and screamed and wailed, but then I was left alone and I cried as I walked home. All I could do was just curl up in a ball and cry myself to sleep.
This was all before I turned sixteen. The following years seemed to be a blur. I healed and made new friends or rekindled friendships with people I haven’t talked to in years. Then I…faded away. I needed to not be in Pines. I needed to find myself and that taking all I had saved up and moving away. I found myself somewhere in the upper east coast. In New Jersey. I waited tables, crashed on a cousin’s couch and soon found myself working for a tv show. It was a drama about grief and how to cope with it. To me it was therapeutic, but just as I was going to move onto a new show, get a co-producing role, I received a call…well a few calls, actually. One was from my Tio Silvester. The next was from Luna.
Turns out the same grandparents who took over the pawn shop and ran the shop for close to a decade were ill. Not anything like cancer but old age catching up to them. Abulo has had a constant battle with a bad back and his dear wife, someone I have always admired, had bad arthritis. That paired with a bad fall my abuelo took one summer, it was catching up to them. They were physically too weak to attend to the shop and Luna, for as much as she tried, couldn’t be around as much as she needed to be and I couldn’t put that on her.
So my dreams were put on hold. I went back home and for the last three years, that’s where I’ve been. I moved back into the family home on Miners Street, I took care of my grandparents, and whenever the load became too much, Tio Silvester was there to help, but I felt guilty for relying on him. He had so much on his plate already but I knew he would never let me say no and I couldn’t refuse it.
One day, I’m hoping to reach out to the sky and feel the touch of my dreams. That girl who wanted to love and be loved is still here, but she’s had a day.

Extra Facts // Headcannons:
REQUIRED: How does your character feel about the expansion/growth of Pines Holler? It's not that Stella doesn't care. She does. She hates what it's doing to her hometown and what the possibility means for all of the small businesses. That being said, she has so much goin on in her life that most of her attention has been on that and less about the forced growth of Pines.
⭐ Stella is someone who compartmentalizes a lot to focus on what she can handle and not everything else, or else she knows it'll drown her completely. Better to have a head above water than completely drown.
Stella smokes. She doesn't smoke often or in large quantities but it helps take the edge off. Now what she smokes remains a mystery to those around her, but just between us, it's weed. She smokes about 3 joints a week and only when she's able to get away for a few hours.
⭐ She doesn't know how to take breaks. She's been conditioning herself to run on autopilot until whatever she's doing is done. If it wasn't for Tio Silvester, she would quite literally pass out from continuously taking care of everyone but herself.
⭐ She drives a 2017 Dodge Durango that has a good amount of wear and tear on it but it gets her from place to place. Like it has been with her since she left Pines and made it from NC to NJ to NYC back to Pines. So it runs well enough.
⭐ Harbors a deep resentment for Caleb Dalton for how their relationship. Maybe it's because their breakup coincided with her parents' death. Maybe it was how he treated her. All she knows is she has avoided from having to talk to him. If he came into the pawnshop, she'd let Luna handle him and sneak out the back door. she...might have something of a problem.
⭐ Despite all the responsibility, Stella owns a dog. Atlas, her 3 year old golden husky (Husky/Golden Retriever mix). He is literally her whole world and is one of the few things in her life keeping her from drowning.
⭐ Stella loves moody dreampop and indie music. What better way to feel things than listen to songs from people who are talking bout exactly what she's feeling and has been feeling for years.
Stella can cook but who has time for that? She'd rather just get an energy bar and a coffee from the gas station or swing by McDonalds. Their breakfast is still peak.
⭐ Two Bits Pawnshop is a pawnshop on Main Street that has been around since the 70s at earliest and has always, in some way, been under the ownership of the Vega family. It sits across the street from Belasco's Antiquities. In it, you will find many things: used cds, dvds, various electronics (mostly old and used), guitars and amps, and a lot more. More often than not, they are sold at discounted prices. Recently, however, prices have gone up due to the expansion of Pines Holler. The books are in the red. By at least 20k.
