At times, he feels he can be and do a bit more, but deeper issues keep him from embracing certain parts of himself.

Background |

Manny’s parents met in their college years when Sonya, his mother, had come down to New Haven to go to med school. His father, Richard, who grew up in New Haven, was just starting his construction business which focused on restoring historical buildings around town. Sonya’s original plans to return to her hometown were changed when Richard proposed and convinced her to stay in New Haven. Not wanting to keep any secrets, Sonya revealed to Richard that she was a Variant and had healing powers. This nearly ended their engagement, because Richard had a strong dislike toward Variants for reasons not fully disclosed. It was only his love and devotion to Sonya that allowed him to overlook it, though, the fact that her power is actually helpful to people may have had some influence as well.

Sonya had to pretty much beg for children -- the second child being an easier sell because the first didn't seem to have powers. When it was discovered that Manny had powers, though, it was more than Richard could take. Even at a young age, he saw the potential danger that Manny’s abilities possessed, and he knew he wouldn’t be able to love his son the way he needed to be loved. Without any real explanation, Richard decided it was best for him and Sonya to be apart. Manny was too young to know what was going on at the time, and Sonya made sure that her love would keep him from feeling the sting of abandonment. Growing up, Sonya helped Manny develop his powers while always urging him to keep it to himself. He didn't quite understand why he had to be so secretive when his mom used her powers for work, but she always told him he would get it one day. When that one day came, Manny realized why his father left, and he resented him for it. Yet, even though Richard left his family because they were Variants, Sonya taught Manny to never be ashamed of who he was and what he could do, while still letting him know that he needed to be careful. For this reason, he had always been wary about revealing his power.

The rise in crime over the last few years had provoked Manny to take up arms as a vigilante to put down a few of the local threats. He usually takes to the streets at night, patrolling around The Shanty and Midtown. His mom and brother know of his exploits, though they don't heavily encourage his vigilantism.

Supernatural Accuracy
Dante can achieve complete and utter accuracy on any target, with the activity center in his brain for aim, accuracy, and precision improved well beyond normal human levels. He needs only to aim for an instant before he can precisely hit a target with a projectile.

He can judge extremely long distances amazingly accurately, gauging the strength needed to launch a projectile in order to hit a target. If a target is moving, Dante can calculate the best method to hit the target. Visual obstructions like smoke and vegetation do not hinder his ability to get an accurate bead on his target, and his intense focus allows him to shut out outside distractions. He can compensate for environmental factors that would normally throw off his aims like wind, air resistance, gravity, and radiant heat (which distorts the image of a target).

Enhanced Dexterity/Agility
Dante can go from one motion to another effortlessly, allowing him to perform numerous gymnastic, athletic, and martial implements with little to no effort. He can precisely control his movements and muscles, making him unable to be clumsy or fumbling. He can slip through a network of lasers, keep perfect balance, or juggle effortlessly without ever tripping or wobbling.

He can only fall over when physically uprooted or pushed, though most times he can land on his feet. Dante can stand upright on even the most unstable of surfaces, such as a moving vehicle, a collapsing building, or an earthquake. He is able to regain balance or bounce back to his feet quickly and perform feats such as shooting a gun, throwing a knife, or fighting at seemingly impossible angles and positions.

Overdrive State
During times of extreme duress, Dante's adrenal glands will release an excessive amount of adrenaline, which increases his strength, relfexes, and ability to withstand pain. It also slows down his sense of time, allowing him to perceive everything in slow-motion. He is unable to control this adrenaline rush.

Class 4
Psionic Knife Creation
Dante is able to create knives out of psionic energy. They are usually small (only about 4 inches), though he can create larger knives (about 8 inches maximum). He has three kinds of knives that he constructs, which are signified by the color of their energy -- all of them being able to slice and pierce as normal knives would. Dante's blue knives have no additional properties, while his red knives explode immediately upon impact when thrown, and his green knives are able to ricochet off of solid surfaces. The knives will dissipate after a few moments or if Dante willingly dismisses them or is somehow made unconscious or unaware.

Background |

Dante’s parents, Giovanni and Maria, met while performing together on broadway. Maria’s immensely captivating voice and ethereal beauty had earned her the starring role in the wildly popular Goddess of the Sky, a play about a goddess named Seraphis who was charged with defeating an evil entity. What made this play so popular, besides the music, was the experience of watching. It was in this show that Maria had used her powers of air and water manipulation to fill the arena with varying weather-like patterns, drawing the audience directly into every scene. The show was so popular, in fact, that it was taken on tour around the country.

Shortly after the tour, Dante, along with his twin sister, Sierra, was born, to both his mother’s and father’s joy. Dante enjoyed a rather happy childhood as his parents earned a pretty decent living. During his teens, however, his family fell apart when Giovanni was caught in an affair and left Maria. Devastated, Maria’s performances came to a screeching halt.

Eventually, she and her children relocated to New Haven, where her brother, Antonio lived, for a fresh start. It took several years for her to be able to perform again, and this time her show, called The Storm Queen, was a solo concert with her silently playing violin with the same atmospheric weather effects. Dante resented his father for abandoning him and his mother, and he was left pained and confused for a while. Eventually, though, he decided that dwelling on the hurt was senseless, and he instead tried to distract himself from it by pouring into several hobbies. In addition, he would often aimlessly wander the city for long stretches of time and, every now and then, would even disappear for a few days without warning only to reappear as if he'd only been gone a couple of hours. Ville Rogue became one of his favorite spots because of the heavy amount of musical talent infused into its streets and cafes.

It was in one of those cafes that Dante met Manny McClain, an up-and-comer who happened to be a fan of his mother's. As he and Manny became closer, it was revealed that Manny was also a Variant, which strengthened their bond on another level.

If she were to ever open up to someone, they would find that she is rather affectionate and playful. The abandonment of the family by her father left her antisocial and extremely self-contained. She has recently started to develop a bit of an anger problem. She prefers to run from her issues rather than face them and tends to push those away that try to help her deal with them. She hates feeling like she is being controlled and will readily dismiss any attempts to do so.

Background |

Sierra's childhood was full of many ups and downs. Being a pyrokinetic child came with more problems than a young girl deserved. It seemed like everything about her Variant ability was discovered the hard way. Her extremely high body temperature didn't manifest until adolescence which earned her a nice lengthy stay in the hospital. It took a week for them to realize she was a Variant and not a little girl on the brink of death. Her pyrokinesis and fire immunity were discovered when she became trapped in her playhouse as it burned to the ground after she accidentally set it ablaze. Needless to say, Sierra has been on the Watch list all her life.

Despite these kinds of issues, she loved her family, especially her dad. Sierra was a major daddy's girl, which could be considered a little odd since her mother was the Variant parent. So when her father left after being caught in an affair, her world absolutely collapsed. She completely withdrew from pretty much everything and everyone. Even her family's eventual move to New Haven did little to ease the hurt.

In time, she would open back up to her mom and brother, showing at least a small semblance of the Sierra they knew before. Her brother, Dante, seemed to take their parents' split much better than she, and Sierra secretly wished to be in that same state of mind. Dante sensed this (of course...their twins) and would consistently encourage her to get out and experience the city. It was a rather inspiring place and it was better than holing up in her room all the time. He told her about the cafe he frequented where Manny liked to perform, and after numerous prods, she eventually visited the place. After meeting Manny, her whole demeanor took a huge shift. She was immensely affected by his personality and became very attached to him. Over time, her more creative and playful tendencies were reinvigorated, and she started getting out a little more as a result, both with and without Manny. As she's spent more time getting to know Manny, she's grown increasingly infatuated with him. Her introversion, however, has prevented her from making any kind of move.

Not only has she been inspired socially by Manny, she's also adopted his inclination toward vigilantism. She uses her Incinera persona as more or less an outlet, though she tries her best not to light the city on fire.

Some call us superhumans, some call us enhanced, some even call us freaks of nature.

Over time, the ‘politically correct’ term has become Variant -- as in, a variation of the normal human genome. We’re said to have an anomaly in our genetic code that allows us to manifest certain powers or abilities.

No explanation as to how or why or where this came from...either way, it’s a major source of conflict in our world.

While the world struggles to figure out what to do with Variants, the Variants struggle to find their place in the world.

Apparently, a normal life isn’t an option for someone who can turn into ice or has armored skin or can read minds...too much to ask, it seems.

But with every struggle, there’s a story...and this is ours.

[ New Haven ]

The most ‘unique’ city in America. Vibrant culture, breathtaking architecture, rich history, festivals all year. One of the greatest cities the country has to offer...if you don't plan on staying, that is. Visiting is great; living there is a whole different story. Poverty, crime, and corruption all come to light once the veil is lifted and the allure fades away. The rich enjoy the most opulent of lives, while the poor struggle to keep food on the table. The city's rising crime rates are overwhelming local law enforcement. It's like biting into the most delicious dessert you've ever tasted...only to discover it contained a deadly poison.

Key Districts

Ville Rouge
The oldest part of town which also happens to be the primary cultural hub.

The central urban area of New Haven boasting numerous skyscrapers and several rail lines.

A historical neighborhood filled with mansions on large plantations located just south of Midtown.

N.O.V.A.

The National Office for Variant Affairs, more commonly referred to as N.O.V.A., is a government agency that deals with Variants involving everything from public relations to legal issues to scientific research. The agency for the most part is quite professional, though, over the years, corruption has started to make its way through the system at various levels.

Variant Types, Ability Classes, and Danger Levels
N.O.V.A. uses a system to classify Variants based on their specific abilities and also by the potential threat to society that those abilities pose. This does not necessarily take into account the notoriety of a Variant, but an especially aggressive or abusive Variant may have a higher danger level than normal (if he/she has been identified).

Volatile - Variants have abilities dealing with fire, electricity, plasma, and any other explosive energy/force

Mentalist - Variants possess psychic abilities; can control and/or manipulate objects, people, energy using their thoughts

Agile - Variants are prone to quick movements and/or fast/instant travel; they may possess increased levels of dexterity

Inhibitor - Variants wield powers that can weaken and/or hinder others

Amplifier - Variants have the ability to improve the condition of themselves and/or others

Distortionist - Variants are able to alter space-time, intangible concepts, or reality as a whole

Natural - Variants have abilities that utilize and/or effect the natural world and/or animals

Architect - Variants who are able to manipulate, modify, and/or replicate matter and/or energy; some are able to construct tangible objects from energy

Ability Classes
Class 1 - Enhancements
These are powers that usually only affect the person using them. They come in the form of things like heightened senses, superhuman strength, accelerated healing, and even immortality. Class 1 abilities are usually of very little danger to others when they aren't being specifically abused.

Class 2 - Alteration
Though Class 2 abilities are similar to Class 1 in the fact that they affect only the user, the difference lies in the nature of how they work. While Class 1 abilities are passive, Class 2 are alternatively more active. These abilities allow a person to alter their bodies, both partially and fully. Some examples would be a physical transformation, a manifestation of an elemental force, or adopting the physiology of a non-human creature. This classification isn't limited to changes in physical appearance. Altering one’s natural ability to adapt to certain situations or environments also falls into this category.

Class 3 - Mental Powers
This category of abilities involves those linked with the mind. Standard psychic powers such as telepathy, telekinesis, and ESP fall into this class as well as powers based on auras, sleep, emotions, and intuition. Other examples of Class 3 abilities would be dream manipulation, astral projection, super-enhanced learning, and illusions.

Class 4 - Manipulation/Creation
Though there may be a few abilities that blur the line between Class 3 and Class 4, Class 4 abilities primarily deal with the manipulation and/or creation of matter and energies outside of the body; however, the creation abilities are of a very specific and limited nature. This class quite possibly contains the widest variety of powers such as the power to manipulate the elements or organic matter, the power to control something more abstract such as color, and even limited power over space-time.

Class 5 - Almighty Powers
This category is reserved for powers that many would consider to be 'godlike’. These abilities are almost -- if not completely -- impossible to control or counter and, at times, have the potential to alter reality or cause an apocalypse. Oftentimes, they can be highly extreme versions of abilities from other classes such as the creation of highly complex life forms or the ability to gain infinite knowledge. The ability to manipulate intangible concepts like probability or physics also fall under this category. Because of their catastrophic potential, the powers in this class are always considered to be of the highest danger level.

Notoriety
One of the primary goals of N.O.V.A. is to identify and register all Variants living within the nation's borders. As one would expect, not all Variants are willing to comply with the agency's agenda, whether out of privacy or sheer rebellion. For these reasons, every Variant has a certain level of notoriety with N.O.V.A., whether officially or unofficially.

Variants who have yet to be identified by N.O.V.A. are considered Unknown.

Confirmed Variants fall into two categories: Watched and Wanted. Those who have been identified but have not registered -- as Variants have no legal obligation to do so -- are put on a Watch list. Variants who are known to misuse their abilities and pose a threat to the well-being and quality of life of others are considered Wanted. Vigilantes operating outside of the law are also considered Wanted as oftentimes their actions can cause collateral damage to people or property.

Variants who register with N.O.V.A. do so under the obligation that they will gain or have already gained employment -- whether through their own means or through one of N.O.V.A.’s programs. This is to ensure that Variants who are compliant are ‘productive members of society’. While several Variants see the registration as a step toward tagging and tracking, others (usually the less fortunate) see it as a way to guarantee themselves a job in a world that has mixed opinions on the treatment of those with powers. Employed Variants must renew their registration once a year and are also subject to ‘check-ins’ with N.O.V.A., which is a large part of why many Variants choose not to register.

M.A.D.
N.O.V.A. employs a task force that is specially trained and equipped to handle Variant criminal activity. M.A.D., which stands for Monitoring, Apprehension, and Detainment, is a fairly recent institution that is being implemented in several major cities. Its members, which included Variants until a rather serious incident caused a policy change, are commonly referred to as MADmen. M.A.D. uses both street cameras and surveillance drones to track suspicious Variant activity. The main facility contains their central command center as well as an armory, garage, and training camp. There are also several smaller satellite 'posts' that are dispersed throughout a city to ensure a wider coverage and quicker response times.

The Nexus

Most, if not all, computers in the world can access the Grand Global Nexus (G.G.N. or The Nexus). The Nexus is simply a vast computer network that connects several other smaller networks (what would be the ‘Internet’). The most predominant branch of the Nexus is the Transnational Databank (TDB). The TDB is a universally linked system of hypertext documents (what would be the ‘World Wide Web’) that is organized into 'datasites’ which each have a 'datacode’. The TDB is divided into five main sectors: government (001), business (002), education (003), media (004), and general/personal (005). A datacode will look like this:

Coalition Zero
Coalition Zero is a highly secretive agency that operates to maintain global welfare. Rather than operating as a single collective body, the Coalition is made up of a network of independent agents, both human and Variant, called ciphers who take orders from an unknown head commander simply known as The Apex. Some agents choose to operate in small cells while others prefer to work solo. The funding and resources for the agency are explicitly undisclosed.

Pariah Underground
The Pariah Underground is a loose network of wayward Variants operating in several major cities throughout the nation. Though many normal humans accept Variants as a part of society, there are those who view them as a danger or a blemish of the population. These more negative attitudes have driven a large number of Variants to oppose normal humans. Though they are more rebels than terrorists, the activity of the Underground had become more aggressive in recent years.

Chimera
Chimera is an underground hackers’ guild that frequently engages in acts of cyber-terrorism. One of the primary goals of Chimera is to infiltrate government systems and the systems of large corporations. Though governments and corporations are their main targets, they will make attacks on citizens quite often. Chimera employs a variety of militant techies including coders, hardcore gamers, and computer engineers.

• Though there is a class for almighty powers, it does not open the door for OP characters. Please take caution if you plan on dabbling into this territory.
• This is taking place in the year 2129 and the general vibe of the RP is more dystopian.
• I left things open in case someone wanted to play an antihero or rebel type character...though I already have a few dedicated villains in mind, so that particular role is off-limits.
• There are overarching plot points planned, though I'm open to suggestions as well. The plots are meant to affect everyone as a whole so that there is a main point to play off of. I would like for a team to form in some capacity, since that seems easier, but not everyone needs to be a part of it.

Well, I'll just mention that since ICON is a government system, it's hard to hack...same with N.O.V.A. Getting into those would either require an elaborate inside job or a wickedly skilled hacker...it's not impossible, just really, really hard. Chimera has been trying forever.
