Bio

Back when dinosaurs ruled the Earth, I got started with writing online on the Spore forums. Man, those were the days. We're talking like 12 years ago 2010-ish!

I've been here on and off for almost as long, and have GM'd a bunch of different things to varying success.

Word of my splendor:

As a bit of background explanation, this is a remake of my RP "A New World: The Fate of Albion" from a few months ago. That RP got a large amount of interest, but due to several key people losing interest of having to unexpectedly drop out it quickly became apparent that a reboot would be in order. So with that in mind, here I'm attempting to make a new and improved evolution of that RP!

OOC Information and RP Details

First and foremost, we have a Discord channel. Feel free to jump in and say hello!

With that out of a way, the premise of the roleplay is simple: we have a High Fantasy setting with the conflict between magic and newly discovered technology (we're talking about roughly 1450s era firearms and artillery) being one of the main driving points.

This is an NRP in which we all control nations on one continent. There exists another region of the globe that was only just discovered in the west, and now there is a rush to explore, colonize, and exploit this New World. But at the same time, our land does not enjoy supremacy over all others. To the east is a land called the Old World, and it is under the sphere of influence of the Commonwealth.

The Commonwealth is a relatively young empire, yet it is also one that exists without rival; it controls vast swathes of land and an enormous population. In many ways it has been the source of the recent technological revolution, but it also retains a respectable amount of magicians. In some ways, they have even begun to merge technology with magic. Our continent and our nations no doubt look like tempting routes of expansion for the Commonwealth, but fortunately there are other ripe fruits that have garnered the giant's attention: to the south of their lands (southeast of ours) is a third continent that is weak and divided, and it is there that the imperialist Commonwealth has began to seek new acquisitions. No doubt the New World beckons to the Commonwealth too, but fortunately they are a longer ways away from that continent and thus we have the advantage.

Plot information:

In some ways this is a sandbox NRP with no set overarching plot. I like literary freedom.

But as you can probably tell from the previous description, there are several large themes from which we can easily build plotlines. Besides anny obvious conflicts or interactions between our disparate nations, there is also the conflict between tradition/magic and advancement/technology, the rivalry and tension between our nations and the Commonwealth, the colonization of the New World.

Game Mechanics

There are two big things that I'm doing somewhat differently here.

So as to promote some diversity in our nations, prevent Mary Sues, and retain OOC fairness without mandating an unrealistic status of all our nations being of an exactly equal power level, I've decided to mandate the use of rolls. Basically I'll give you some random attributes about your nation, such as notable trade goods, the size and strength of your territory and population, and some general military information. Then you can tailor a nation around these vague outlines and submit a sheet for approval.

Secondly, the RP will be broken into loose "turns". Each turn will represent one month of time IC. You are allowed to perform multiple action on each turn; the point isn't to restrict action so much as keep a consistent flow of time and help us keep track of how long certain actions (like raising an army) have been going on for.

Rules:

Though not an exhaustive list, here's some important rules to keep in mind:

1. Good grammar and some effort please. I've labeled this RP to be Mid/High Casual and will thus expect the effort of at least a few paragraphs per post.
2. On the topic of posts, going inactive for a long time without at least telling us will result in us having to terminate you from the RP and go through the effort of either writing your nation out of the story. It probably also means having someone else control it when needed. That's all a big hassle, so please don't make the commitment of joining this RP unless you're ready to keep it.
3. If you feel it necessary to keep your secrets, plotting against nations and the like can be done in PMs instead of on the OOC. I'll ask that you include me though, just so that I can keep in the loop as GM.
4. Regarding technology level, let's try to keep things near the early Renaissance time period for the nations of Albion, at least for the beginning of the RP. I am willing to allow certain fantasy materials like mithril or adamantine so long as they aren't ridiculously powerful.
5. At the bottom of each IC post, add a small summary placed inside of a hider. This becomes very helpful when trying to look back or for those that are struggling to keep up with the RP.

FAQ

How do I join?
Just ask me for rolls and then use them to make a nation sheet! Post it in the OOC and I'll either approve it or suggest the necessary improvements to make it acceptable.

Are rolls necessary?
Yes. There is room for creative interpreation and some flexibility in changing minor things, but I will require that everyone use rolls.

What if I don't like my rolls?
Obviously I'd prefer that you just try to work with what you are given, but if it's truly a dealbreaker then we have a few options. Firstly, I don't mind at all if you decide to trade your complete set of rolls with someone else for their set. Failing that, I will work with you on an individual case-by-case basis. As a rule of thumb, I'm willing to allow small things to simply be changed, but if you object to something major then I'll probably just offer to give you a reroll.

Something else...
Feel free to ask!

Some credits:

Credits to Chenzor and several of the other guys in the Civilizations RP Discord chat. They gave me the motivation to try making this RP and they helped me iron out some of the ideas.

Credits also to Sini's An Age of Empires RP from a few years back. I'm taking a lot of inspiration from that RP (however brief it was) and might copy his rolls mechanic.

We have @TheArhive to thank for making our map. He did it all; nevermind that silly @Archetype Zero.

And lastly, @Willy Vereb helped me in writing out and balancing the potential rolls.
I was under the impression that elementals spoke the god language too.

They speak bastardized dialects of it, with each major element having its own variant. Part of shamanism is learning how to understand what the elementals are saying, so Vetruvian shamans can also speak the divine language.
<Snipped quote by Scarifar>

There already exists a couple of IC calendar systems. The Urtelem maintain their own solar calendar (with a start date of when Spiral Palms/Jvan/Chiral Phi gave them the Spiral Script). Kho said the Vetruvians keep a calendar of sorts. Other peoples very likely keep some track of years passed, by counting the passage of seasons. Our Year 1 is an arbitrary point chosen for OOC reasons (IC cultures will have their own Year 1's), but the length of the year is very much ingrained into the IC.

Also, I like the idea of having each Turn have a central date, and plots performed within that Turn avoid extending too far from that time. This will place some consistency on the time period that events take place in. For those who have long-ranging plots, it will tell them to reign it in a bit and wait for the world to catch up. For those who have short-term plots, it will remind them that the world moves on, possibly without them, and they should try to resolve those plots before they hold back everything else.

Of course, these time limits should be soft limits, recommendations, rather than hard limits. Many of us like to take some time to explore the life of an individual, which may span a much shorter time span than many other events but still take a lot of writing. But, at the end of the day, this is a god roleplay, not a mortal roleplay, and gods often act on a global timescale with long time frames. Mortals live and die. Cities rise and fall. The gods keep working.

Progression of time from Turn to Turn should be flexible. In recent events, with people exploring the aftermath in the generation of the Blinding Purge and the extended preparations for a single battle, it would not make narrative sense to enforce a major timeskip. But once the Xerxes battle takes place, we probably have enough breathing room to let a bit of time to elapse.

*whistles innocuously as all Vetros-dependent plotlines are still yet to catch up to the Realta invasion*

You know, I can actually back each turn having a rough time period to cover...

It would probably keep me on track much better than I have been. That being said, I have no real desire to attempt to date my posts (other than the Vetros ones which are dated by generation and lifespan of the Priest-Kings).
Note: One charactere has no Might this Turn. That is because the stat sheet was not updated. Lack of update will result in a default to zero from now on - I took the time to update all those that were not updated bar one, I'll most likely not be doing that again in future.

I'm sure you remember all too well how terrible I was when I tried my hand at accounting on that sheet, but I made an attempt nonetheless. Since you apparently knew the numbers anyways you should probably double check what I put down.

<Snipped quote by Kho>

I should probably voice my opinion on this. While probably an effective motivator for updating the stat sheet, I feel that negating all might is a disproportionately large response. In doing this you arbitrarily cripple player characters, reducing the capacity of the player to interact with the world.

Also, unless you discussed this with him before hand, it is probably quite unfair on Cyclone to do this to him without warning.

I feel like this is the latest incarnation of the fabled fire whip.

My valiant defender rides in with shining armor! BBeast, you're a bro.
I've spoken with Commodore about his joining and can vouch for how he has already figured out a basic story arc. I'll let him go into detail on that if he likes.

@Commodore Now we're reaching that point where the character sheet is necessary to progress much further. But until then, since BBeast is receptive to your idea for a creation story then by all means feel free to fill him in with what information we talked over on Discord.
"INSOLENT WORM! You dare disturb I, the indomitable Stonelord Pebble? Let it never be said that the djinni lords of earth are weak, for I will shatter your every bone-"

"Huh? What's an earth djinni? You mean a GALBAR djinni?"

"What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo."
<Snipped quote by Kho>

Feels kind broken. Two kinda inactive players could come in and have 50 might pt easily.

If there is ever a 3rd divinus, maybe it would be interesting to add a minimum of might spent both total and on different actions (so it does not all condense into a weapon or into fifty waifu avatars) before one could level up or make a HS.

fix'd

You spend it all on waifus, I spend it all on weapons!

Deal with it!
@Scarifar
You mean like this by mashing spacebar four times? Doesn't count xd

There's also how you can't have more than one empty line between two sentences.

I tried to type this sentence with ten empty lines between it and the one above, but look at what happened.
Or you know, we could have the ability to actually indent. >.>
