I prefer descriptions, but pictures of any kind are fine. I'm not really fond of the anime style, but I don't have that much against it and there's not actually anything wrong with it. They're your character, and whatever gets the point across is fine by me! The only kind of picture I'd have a problem with is if your character is drawn like Picasso or some other interpretative style that doesn't communicate the technical details.
