• Personal History •
Barring a certain incident, Haku has lived a relatively uneventful life.
Born in the seaside town of Kamakura just 50 kilometers outside of Tokyo, Haku was raised by a single mother in a small apartment. From an early age, she assumed responsibility for taking care of herself, freeing up time for her mother's busy schedule. She cleaned, cooked, and did other such chores for herself, but, unlike other children her age, seldom complained about these obligations. After all, this was just the way things were, and her mother was counting on her to help. Being praised made her happy, so she did her best.
When she began public school, things became a little harder. At first, she tried to balance her duties with the new possibilities that were open to her, and so spent a little time with some of her classmates trying out the games they enjoyed and the like. However, with even more responsibilities came less time for herself, and she needed to hurry home right after class so as to get back before it was dark out. After all, she didn't want to worry her mother. So, when most children her age would have been busy making friends with their classmates and playing together after school, Haku soon stopped interacting regularly with anyone. After all, she didn't have time for such things. She had to make sure that the apartment was clean, the laundry was done, and dinner was ready so that her mother would be able to rest when she got home in the evening.
As she grew older, it slowly began to dawn on her that perhaps this was different from the way things normally were. She grew aware of a sense of separation from the people around her, and came to understand what it meant to be jealous. It must have been nice to have people to talk to whenever you wanted, she thought. It must have been nice to play games and spend time together. But, much though she might desire such things for herself, there just wasn't time. It was alright. She wasn't alone, after all, because her mother was still counting on her.
That is, until the accident. One day, while riding with her mother on a rare outing, a little bit of random misfortune finally struck Haku's formerly mundane life. Not paying enough attention to cross-traffic, Haku's mother pulled out into a seemingly empty intersection and was blindsided by a car coming from the opposite direction which slammed into the passenger side, crumpling it in and leveraging the already turning car to send it rolling. By the time ambulances arrived on the scene, a small crowd had gathered and had helped to flip their car. However, although they'd pulled her mother and the passengers of the other card from the wreck, Haku herself was trapped inside for considerably longer, as the frame of the car had caved in all around her. When emergency workers called to her, she didn't respond, and it was feared that she had been crushed completely. And yet, miraculously, when the debris was finally pulled off from on top of her, it was found that she'd somehow survived with just a few broken bones, lacerations, and other surface-level trauma.
All those caught in the accident were rushed to the hospital, where her mother and both of the passengers of the car they'd hit were stabilized despite injuries of varying severity. The driver of the other car died in the accident, however, and Haku's mother had been partially crippled by the accident, as damage to her lower spine paralyzed her below the waist. Between this and her other injuries, she was bedridden for several months, and couldn't return to her former life afterward. She was moved to an assisted living community, with the expenses covered by her insurance. As her mother could no longer provide for her, it was agreed that Haku would be transferred into the custody of her estranged father - a man she'd hardly even met before.
Haku herself woke from her unconsciousness rather quickly, but spent a few days in a confused state. She didn't seem to recognize the faces of the classmates who came to visit her, talked to herself, and occasionally devolved into nonsensical babble. At one point, she had a full blown panic attack, and it was feared that she'd had a complete psychological break. However, after a few days of confusion and disorientation, she gradually came to her senses. When her injuries had finished healing, and after extensive psychological evaluation, was deemed both physically and mentally sound.
After a few more days spent as a ward of the hospital, her father finally came to collect her. The two didn't speak much, but there was no arguing or quarreling between them, either. Without any objections, Haku left her hometown and moved to Tokyo. Although she initially feared that sharing a house with a parent she'd never before spoken to would be a difficult situation, thankfully, her father was a busy man. As such, her manner of living wasn't too different from the quiet home life she was used to.
However, her school life was significantly different. Although she'd never been particularly socially active, at the very least, she knew some of her classmates by name and occasionally spoke to them. As she hadn't been able to move before the start of the school year, however, she began her first year of junior high as a stranger and an outcast. Without any knowledge of the city or of any of the people around her, she already had a significant hurdle to overcome. However, the ch
anges she began to undergo in the aftermath of the accident were what truly doomed her.
Her hair went silver - presumed to be from the trauma - but her eyes almost seemed to have changed colors too. Her skin became pale, and the once peaceable but cheerful girl became gloomy and distant, occasionally spacing out completely as if she'd fallen asleep standing up, and experiencing unaccountable mood swings. Unable to control her own behavior, she was soon ostracized by her peers. Things only grew worse with the start of high school, as she began to experience brief patches of utter obliviousness where she couldn't remember what she'd been doing for increasingly large periods of time. Sometimes, she got into arguments with people she didn't really know, and after the fact couldn't remember why she'd been so angry at them. Terrified of being called crazy, she kept quiet about these and other, similar experiences. But, even so, her behavior was simply too strange. Her silence did little to stop the rumors that began to form about the emotionless, arrogant girl who flaunted herself and dressed like a skank, then faked innocence and obliviousness, or about the girl who was so stupid that she didn't pay attention to anything around her and lived like a sleepwalker. Bit by bit, her classmates went from avoiding her to despising her, and there was nothing she could do but simply avoid the confrontations that had become inevitable.
Somewhere along the line, Haku began to experiment with a wide array of hobbies she'd never really considered before, trying to find things to distract her from the mundane routine into which her life had settled. And, although she'd never admit it, perhaps she was trying too late to find something she might have in common with other people. Ultimately, she settled upon a rather unlikely choice: a simple card game, known as World's End. It wasn't really because she was hooked, or anything like that. It also wasn't just because the game was popular. It wasn't even because of childhood nostalgia - because she'd given this game a try once a long time ago back when she was a little kid, but had just as quickly abandoned it due to having nobody to play against, and only a few weird cards she'd picked up at a local hobby store on a whim. Rather, it was because, surprisingly enough, she seemed to have a bit of a knack for it. Strategies just seemed to spring to life in her head whenever she had the cards in her hands, as if she already knew what she was doing. She wasn't a person gifted with many natural talents, and so viewed this as a sign of sorts. If it was something she was good at... it couldn't be that bad to try, could it?
Unfortunately, in practice, it wasn't so easy. Although she could beat other beginners like herself, when she tried to challenge more experienced players in local tournaments, her initial advances were rather quickly rebuffed by a series of humiliating defeats, culminating in a terribly unfortunate matchup where she, a total amateur, was matched against the Tokyo champion in a qualifier round. She was so utterly beaten and mocked by her opponent for her inexperience, lack of focus, and vacant attitude that she was driven to temporarily give up the game - and even that wasn't enough to shake off the unwanted nickname that soon affixed itself to her - Kūhaku - thanks to the publicity of the incident. Even her classmates started calling her that, and told new students it was her name. She tried correcting them, but it spread so quickly that finally she just gave up. It wouldn't matter for much longer anyway. After all, she'd be graduating soon, and then she could leave all this behind her.
...Even so, she supposed the hated name wasn't all that inaccurate. Deep down, Haku had already started to believe that she really was just as empty as they said she was. But no matter how many times she accepted this fact, it still seemed like there was something deep down inside her, guiding her every move even if she didn't know how or why. But when had that first become a part of her? Just thinking about it made her head hazy and her heart anxious, so she soon gave up. Voices in her head and an instinct she couldn't control? Ridiculous. Nobody would believe it anyway. They'd just think she was- And really, for all she knew, she might have been crazy!

C-Ranking. Although she's won a few local tournaments, she's far from well known as anything but a laughably pathetic speed bump on the last Tokyo champion's road to victory.
• Playstyle •
Haku tends to play in a defensive yet ruthless fashion. She favors utilities and main monsters that serve to reduce enemy options, negating their abilities and locking down slots so they can't be used. However, she also has a highly sacrifice-based playstyle, throwing away weaker cards and deliberately taking losses so as to wear down enemy forces alongside her own. In short, she favors a war of attrition where the enemy's kept busy with expendable targets so they can't ever target her leader and get a shot at winning - a cowardly but nevertheless effective strategy.

*• Haku is a surprisingly tidy housekeeper, even in her current state of distraction. She's good at cooking, cleans quickly, and is generally a very organized individual.
*• Her birthday is March 3rd - the same date as Hinamatsuri. Between that and her lack of friends in the past, she's never actually celebrated a birthday before.
*• Her father is a career salaryman in Tokyo, while their apartment is in one of the suburbs. He often spends nights with cowokers to avoid the commute back into the heart of town, so Haku is frequently home alone.
