Here they were, in this cancerous cesspool, and Marcos Kingsley had to make the best of this unfortunate circumstance. Make this school year his bitch as his sister put it. With dull eyes that mirrored a look his older brother, Noah, would give others countless times, the look of sheer boredom, Marcos followed behind his friend to the entrance.

So much for the group walking in together. Clearly, Aiden had other plans. Why couldn’t they, as a trio, pick up Fi together? They never started the new year separated. This was already a nuisance and now Aiden being the selfish man that Marcos knew his friend to be, was changing things up. Changing how things were since they started high school. Marcos hated change.

At first, Marcos didn’t see this as a big deal, but the closer to the door they got, the more of the idea of Aiden picking up Fi alone sank in. The more weird it seemed. Since when was his best friend ever eager to do something like that?

His annoyance was swiftly interrupted by a loud screeching. When he turned his head to see what had just happened, a random kid rushed past him causing him to only see the color of lavender at a distance, before following the shadow that rudely ran in between him and his friend to get into the door.

Taking a couple of deep breaths in, not wanting to do something uncharacteristic, he left the mysterious girl be and as if Richie knew he needed one, Marcos was patted on the back which not only comforted him but also informed him that it was time to enter the gates of hell. The first thing to hit his dark gaze was the tacky decor than shortly after, his focus set on the stench of this place. It was a lot worse than expected. As if their minds were in sync, Marcos and Richie looked at each other, in disbelief. This was actually their reality.

When a name tag was offered to him, the handsome dark-haired jock laughed, “You seriously think I’m going to wear that?”

“How else will your tour guide find you?” The older woman spoke softly, trying her best to speak with authority, but it was clear her eyes were wandering.

“They won’t.” Crumpling the name tag, Marcos tossed the garbage back on the table and just when he was leaving, heading where Richie was waiting for him, Miki, the primadonna of Liberty high, his prissy friend, slammed right into his chest. No apology or anything. “Seriously, Miki?”

Once he saw how she glared at the teacher, he knew exactly how his friend was feeling and could relate. Letting it go, knowing well enough she would give him a headache with her loud mouth, Marcos hooked his thumbs on his pants’ pockets. Sure enough, she went straight to the place he needed to go: where Richie was sitting.

Meanwhile Richie had been staring at his phone deep in conversation over texts. But when he heard the kerfuffle he flicked his eyes upward just as Miki had made her way over and Marcos had stalked off on his own. Miki knew full and well that he hated being called by his full name, but he let it go with just a grimace and a sharp intake of breath before flashing her a bright smile.

“You know Miki… I don’t really know how I ended up alone. Aiden is out in the parking lot picking up Fi, for some reason. And uh.. Prince charming found something over there that’s more interesting than me” he jerked his thumb over to where Marcos was standing talking to someone that was obscured by his tall frame. “But it seems that we are in the same tour group… lucky us!” he finished with just a hint of sarcasm.

Miki sighed. “I really hate not being told everything beforehand,” she said, pouting, “But I’m glad at least one person I know will be with me.” She patted Richard on his shoulder. “I can’t tell you how much I wasn’t looking forward to being dragged around by someone named Ellie. I’d say that was a good name, but it’s someone from Rosefell--”

She cut herself off to avoid sounding like a broken record, and glanced over at Marcos.

Oh! A sudden realization came to her. “So that’s who I bumped into.” She giggled, amused at how long it took her to figure it out.

Marcos had caught sight of someone he didn’t expect to see. Someone that could immediately turn his frown upside down. The cute waitress from the Yellow Rose Diner. She was holding a sketch pad and waiting in the section labeled for ‘tour guides’. With no hesitation, he strolled to the girl with the bright disposition that he found just as attractive as he found Fiamma. It was those naive, innocent eyes that got him. “Hey, Ellie! I didn’t know this was your school. It’s, um, nice. Looks like we’re in this merge together, huh? How’ve you been? It’s been too long since I’ve had a good grand slam.”

Ellie found herself standing against the wall clutching her sketchbook in a bit of a daze. She had only made her way inside a few moments prior as whilst waiting at the picnic table for Lilith, she got a front row seat to a show she didn’t ask to see. The brunette caught sight of her ex, Rico, already turning on his signature charm in front of a pink-haired Liberty girl. Granted, she did almost see him get hit by a car (which is what most bitter ex-girlfriends dreamed of), but it was watching him look at that girl the way he used to look at her that made Ellie sick to her stomach. She hightailed it out of there quickly, not needing to see what happened next.

It didn’t help that the last time she saw Rico, it was when she broke up with him, citing that his self destructing habits were tearing her apart and that they were just not on the same page anymore. She couldn’t help but wonder if she was completely over it or if she had just been telling herself that for the last three months… regardless, she wasn’t expecting to see him so soon into the first day, which is what especially threw her off guard.

A deep voice pulling her out of her fog, the last person Ellie expected to walk up to her was Marcos, a boy that she had grown to know due to his frequent visits to the diner that she worked at. Easy on the eyes, as well as surprisingly easy to talk to, Ellie had enjoyed his company for many shifts at work, but never put two and two together that he was a Liberty student until this moment. Surprised to see him, her mood shifted quickly. “Marcos, hi! I didn’t know you’d be here.” The brunette greeted, trying to shake off any indications that she was previously distracted by her thoughts. She laughed as he tried to play off his comment regarding the state of the school as genuine.

“‘Nice’ is a word you could use to describe this place, but I usually settle for something along the lines of ‘adequate’ or ‘good enough’. It gets the job done though.” It was no secret that Rosefell was well… not all roses. With barely enough money in the budget to adequately pay teachers and fund curriculum programs, appearances were not what the school board cared about. Ellie didn’t mind- all that mattered to her was getting a diploma and getting out of there. “Yeah, I haven’t seen you around. Where’ve you been these days?” The girl asked, a small smile forming on her face.

Marcos genuinely smiled as he listened to Ellie talk and defend her school (which was totally fair, and very much something she’d do). When the ball was back in his court, he admitted, “Every Labor Day weekend, my friends and I go on a trip and spend it like it’s our last days on Earth. When I came back, I had to balance my time with Serena — my doggo — and my mom, who's been a bit more… aggressive these days with getting her sons involved with her business.”

“Sounds like a fun trip, you guys must have had a great time- sorry about your mom though.” Ellie replied, having recalled Marcos mentioning his family previously at the diner.

Taking a brief pause, Marcos nodded at her response. She was honestly too sweet, but something about her voice did soothe him. When she was done, he shook his head, “No need to apologize. I love her, so I’ll go out of my way for her.” For a moment, he played with his ring on his left hand, pinky finger, subconsciously, before continuing. “That’s Richie, by the way,” he gestured behind him to where his best friend and friend were standing, “The guy I’ve talked to you about. The one that keeps me in check. I’d introduce you to Aiden, but he’s busy taking care of a Mouse.”

Out of habit, Marcos surveyed Ellie’s outfit. This would be the first time he saw her in something that wasn’t her diner uniform. He got so distracted at seeing a familiar face, that he forgot to appreciate the whole picture and how much effort she put in making a good first impression. He felt the urge to compliment her, but the last place his eyes rested on was her chest where her name tag sat. She had crossed out the word ‘Eleanor’ and wrote Ellie over it. Not letting his eyes linger too long in that area, he grinned, “Eleanor, huh? Looks like Richie will be in good hands today.”

The brunette let her eyes follow to where Marcos motioned and- oh my god. Standing there was the blonde that had smiled at her in the parking lot, the one who she still didn’t believe was real- that was his friend Richie? The one that he had talked so highly about in the diner all of those nights? Ellie began putting together the pieces in her head, nodding absentmindedly to show that she was still somewhat paying attention. If Marcos was easy on the eyes, Richie was even easier. The light seemed to hit his hair just right to give it the look of golden threads.

And then something else clicked. Those boys that Christian had mentioned before… what had he called them? The Golden Trio. Three guys with stunningly good looks and lots of money… they were them. But Marcos was nice? Chris had said they were assholes. Ellie tried to keep her facial expressions from revealing how she was feeling on the inside, attempting to comprehend all of this information. And then he threw another curveball at her- she was supposed to tour Richie around. Jesus christ.

“Mhmm,” The brunette nodded in agreement once more, a tad bit flustered at the thought of talking to such a guy and still staying focused enough to not trip over her own two feet. On top of that, she also had the other student to guide as well. “Yeah, yeah, I guess I’m showing him around today.”

Richie's eyes followed the small frame of Miki as she stood up and walked away towards Marcos without so much as a word. He rolled his eyes and sighed standing up and walking over after her. He nodded his head towards his friend as if to say Sorry, I tried to stop her. Then he looked over at the girl Marcos had been talking to, it took a little while but then he realized she had been one of the only people who had acknowledged him out in the school yard. He smiled warmly at her and was just about to introduce himself but was cut off by Miki.

”Marcos!” Miki’s squeal-like voice etched a path for her into the conversation that he and Miss Plain Jane were having, who went completely ignored by the Queen of Liberty. ”What are you doing all the way over here and subjecting yourself to the company of the--” She gave the only other girl a quick glance. “--Less fortunate? You should be with me. Or literally anyone else.” She flipped her hair once and glared at the help for a few seconds before turning her nasty expression upside down and smiling at Marcos.

“Be nice, Miki.” Marcos exasperatedly sighed. “Ellie. Miki. Richie. Richie. Miki. Ellie,” he moved his hand with the pinky ring back and forth. If there was one thing Marcos had no time for, it was getting Miki mad enough to throw a tantrum. Plus, if he tried correcting her behavior it would only end with her giving him an ear full. They had similar interests, and she was a good friend, to those that she deemed fit, but she was undoubtedly a brat and it was impossible to change. Thank her parents for that.

That being said, even brats deserved friends. “I know her from Yellow Rose.” He gave Richie a knowingly gaze, since he’s told him about the waitress on numerous occasions, and then continued onward with Miki-damage control, “Miki, you wouldn’t be caught dead there, but they have amazing food and great service.” He winked at Ellie.

She gave Marcos a death glare, and took in a breath for nobody’s benefit but her own. ”So, this is Ellie.” Watch as Miki pretends to be shocked. Also watch as she swallows the first thing that came to her, the first thing she wanted to say when she realized the most plain-sounding name belonged to the most plain-looking girl. She held out her hand, bent slightly like a princess -- nay, a queen -- and forced herself to smile for …Ellie “Miki. It’s a…” Miki was having difficulties at the moment; bear with her. “--Pleasure to meet you, Ellie.”

Richie let out a scoff as he stepped forward from behind Miki “It really is…” he gave Miki a disapproving look, way to reinforce the stereotype that was already put on them. He turned back to Ellie “Hi I’m Richie. I’m just going to go out on a limb here and guess that Ellie is short for Eleanor” His eyes shot down to her blue name tag with her full name crossed out, then they flicked to his own tag with the same thing done. “It looks like we already have things in common,” he noted with a wider smile looking Ellie right in her eyes.

Ellie was briefly taken out of her trance by Miki’s abrasive nature and harsh choice of words. Now, the brunette had certainly dealt with her fair share of difficult people in the past (you’d be surprised how some people acted sometimes when you messed up their order or neglected their table) so putting on her best customer service smile, the girl clasped Miki’s hand and shook it. “Nice to meet you too, welcome to Rosefell.” Ellie replied, putting her arm back down at her side.

The girl then turned her attention to Richie, the eye contact alone probably enough to make any girl go weak at the knees. But, she stood her ground and looked down at her name tag as he glanced at it, mentioning the similarity to his own. “You’d be right- I just go by Ellie but I guess the administration seems to have an aversion to nicknames today.” The brunette replied with a small laugh. “Marcos has told me a lot about you, it’s great to finally put a face to the name.” Ellie commented, a genuine smile returning to her lips and replacing the fake one she had put on for Miki’s sake. Yeah, an attractive face. The girl thought to herself.

After checking the time on his wrist watch, Marcos grumbled to himself, knowing he should let his friends go about their business and enjoy their tour with Ellie. Personally, the tour was a waste of time, but he knew Richie would go through with it out of politeness and Miki? She enjoyed belittling someone so yeah, she probably would go with it too until she grew bored. Patting Richie’s back, Marcos announced his departure, “Ellie, now, take good care of these two okay? I wouldn’t want to take away from this amazing tour you prepared, so I’ll leave you guys to it.”

Ellie silently wished Marcos would stay to act as a buffer, but knew he couldn’t since he had his own tour guide to find, which meant she was on her own from this moment forth. “I will, don’t worry.” She reassured him (as well as herself) before turning back to Miki and Richie. This was sure going to be some tour. “Alright, shall we?”

Liv Howard & Spike Langley

Fearing guest appearances from Trixie Kingsley and Cael Crawford

It was at the very instant that Liv Howard walked away from her brother and his friends that a massive weight was lifted off of her shoulders. She could finally take a deep breath and look forward to enjoying the first day of her Junior year. As much as she loved her brother, in some ways Aiden was more protective of Liv than their parents. He went out of his way to intimidate any guy or gal that tried to approach his baby sister, which was not exactly the best thing for her social or dating life. But now that he was busy with Fiamma and Senior year shenanigans he’d have no time to police her… which meant that from this moment forward she was free to do as she pleased.

Liv, with Trixie in tow, began to make her way towards the main building (which she had to admit did look like it could collapse in on itself at any possible moment), a wide grin seeming to be permanently stuck to her face. Today was a fresh start by starting at a different school and the blonde was evidently thrilled about it. She had spent the last two weeks listening to Aiden bitch and moan about the transfer, but forever the opposite of her brother, Liv was excited about the prospect of a clean slate.

Her blue eyes gazed around the parking lot and tried to pick familiar faces out of the crowd of students greeting each other, but was met with no known entities. It was then that she spotted a boy dressed as Tuxedo Mask emerging from an unassuming car. Liv couldn’t help but laugh as she watched him gallantly stroll towards the general direction of the front doors handing out beautiful red roses as he went. Rosefell sure had some… characters. Her giggle must have carried over to where he was because the next thing the blonde knew he appeared within an arm's reach and extended a delicate flower out to her before disappearing into the crowd. Liv smiled graciously but couldn’t get in a word edgewise as the mystery cosplayer departed.

The blonde turned to her latina best friend, “Guess I’m already turning a new leaf,” she commented, twirling the stem of the rose between her thumb and index finger before tilting the fake flower towards Trixie playfully.

Smiling and rolling her eyes at her closest friend, Trixie pulled the flower out of her hand and muttered, "A new leaf, huh?” After scanning around them, the foreign crowd, the boys and girls they didn’t know, and the ones they knew, Trixie started feeling anxious. What if her brother was right to be stressed about this? To build a whole new reputation. Start completely over. Maybe getting casted off? She knew she’d be fine, but things were starting to set in finally. This was the first day of Junior year and it was clear they weren’t in Kansas anymore.

With fidgety hands she snapped the stem of the rose close to the bud. "Oh shit.” To fix what she just did, she leaned in and put the rose in Liv’s hair, rested it on her right ear, "There. It really compliments the white.” The youngest Kingsley’s voice subtly shook. No matter how much Trixie can try, she couldn’t hide her nerves from Liv.

Liv gasped as Trixie split the stem from the bud as easily as stepping on a twig. She knew that her friend was nervous for their first day at Rosefell, but she didn’t realize she was that nervous. Although she didn’t mind the welcome addition to her outfit, the red rose adding a nice pop of color to her monochrome ensemble, she was a little concerned about how Trix was taking all of this. Delicately, the blonde girl grasped her bestie's hand and squeezed it. “It’s going to be okay, I promise.” Liv reassured her with a comforting smile. “You and me, remember?”

"Yeah, absolutely! You and me.” Like they did when they were kids, Trixie lifted her pinky and grabbed Liv’s in return. A sweet, innocent gesture that no matter what happened this year, they would find their way back to each other. They always did. Unfortunately for the best friends, their shared, short moment together was ripped away from each other. They wouldn’t get the opportunity to talk about clubs, about meeting up later, about anything, because Trixie’s tour guide tapped on her shoulder.

“Fuckin’ shit, there you are!” The brunette was surprisingly shorter than both Liv and Trixie. While Liv was standing at 5’4, Trixie at 5 even, this girl was 4’11” and kind of felt like an ankle biter. She was called by her classmates: “The Raging Bull”. “Call me Nellie, any other names you hear, trash it.” Trixie was a deer in headlights when she saw how abrasive this girl was. To those that did know her, she was a senior who went by the name Helena Perfect, but it was clear she had a rowdy, rough attitude and took no shit from anyone. “I ain’t here to waste your time, and you sure as hell ain’t going to waste my time so come on. We’re gonna’ make this quick. I have a date with my magic conch in ten.”

Before she walked away, expecting Trixie to follow, Nellie glared at the blonde, “That’s a pretty white dress you got there. Fan-fuckin’-tastic choice for this shithole. I’m sure by the end of the day, it’ll still be white.”

Trixie quickly pulled Liv into a hug and whispered, “Hopefully your tour guide is less… mad.”

The blonde was certainly taken aback by the girl’s harsh demeanor, but wasn’t all too surprised that such people roamed the halls of their new school. Liv made a point to give the Nellie girl a sickeningly sweet grin even though her “compliment” may have been in a negative spirit, looking her over to try and find any redeeming qualities to comment on. “Your jeans are cute… shocked that they don’t have more holes in them, but they work.” Liv stated, a touch more judgemental than she normally would have.

“Aw thanks princess. I’m sure that lip of yours will get you far.” With her back turned to Liv, Helena marched away, unbothered.

With their delightful acquaintance now gone, the blonde hugged her latina bestie tightly, tighter than before. “I’m sure it won’t be that bad. Text me when you get to your first class so I know you’re still alive.”

“You too. Love you, Livvy.” Once their long moment came to a close, Trixie pulled herself away and hurriedly made her way to her tour guide (yepp, still in her heels).

Liv smirked as she watched Trixie scurry away in an attempt to catch up with her tour guide who was doing everything but touring her around. As soon as she disappeared into the crowd, the blonde took a deep breath before confidently walking in the same direction and opening the front doors of Rosefell High. Where she was supposed to go now that she was inside, she didn’t know, but as long as she looked good doing it, it didn’t matter if she was headed in the wrong direction.

Speeding from a side hall, in a cheap ass knight suit, where it looked like it was going to break off because Spike was surprisingly fit, the mascot of the school came roller blading down the hall with the bag of lollipops. He threw some candy at a group, “Hearts for everyone! We are sooooooooooooooooooooooo happy you’re here.” He was going so fast that the sudden, random cute blondie coming down another hall was unexpected. He was quick to dodge her ever so slightly, his speed causing her hair to fly with him. “Woah man. SAFETY. SAFETY ON.” However, he was too late to break and as a result, he rammed into the main office’s large glass window, falling on his ass.

“Oh my god,” Liv exhaled, completely startled by the interaction but also concerned for the poor kid in the costume. A few people looked in their general direction to see what the commotion was about, but surprisingly no one seemed to go to his aid, so the blonde quickly walked over to where the boy was laying on the ground, “Are you okay?” She asked innocently, having no context as to who this guy was and what he was doing in the mascot suit.

Seeing birds for a second, Spike’s sight slowly registered reality and his reality in front of him was a beautiful blonde, one of those cinnamon roll looking kind of girls, like her father was a preacher or some shit, gorgeous but clearly too good for a piece of shit like him. Out of his league. A goofy grin rose on his face. Once he grabbed the nearest heart lollipop which happened to be in the shade of blue, he offered it to her all the while laying on the floor, “Wow, somebody better call God, because he’s missing an angel.”

The blonde gave the boy a knowing look, but took the sucker anyway and tried to resist the urge to roll her eyes. “Funny,” she commented sarcastically, “guess you hit your head pretty hard, huh?”

“Nah man, I know hot when I see it.” Exuberantly picking himself up, like this happens all the time, using no support but his core muscles, Spike was back on his feet in no time and offered his hand, “Hi, I’m Spike Langley and welcome to Jackass.”

She smirked, taking his hand and shaking it. “Olivia Howard, but my friends call me Liv.” The girl replied, putting two and two together to delineate the type of person Spike was. “Any chance you can point me in the direction of where the tour guides are?” She pulled out her phone to double check the name of the person who was going to be showing her around. “I’m supposed to find someone named Rachelle Rawlins?”

“Oh, no shit. I got you. Rae’s a little weirdo, but I think you got yourself a good deal.” Gesturing for Olivia to follow him, he cruised down the hall much slower than before so he was only inches in front of the Liberty student, “Liv’s a nice name, so yeah, cool.” He tossed candy out a lot calmer now, as he cheerily asked his new acquaintance, “Got any plans? Any clubs you might want to join?”

“If I’m being honest, I’m just trying to make it through today.” Liv expressed candidly, following Spike as they made their way to supposedly where this Rae girl was. As they passed by people, she tried to pick out familiar faces from Liberty but could only identify a few. Did any of the Liberty kids decide not to show? She bet that some of them got a ‘get out of jail free card’ by transferring elsewhere. “Any tips?” She asked in an attempt to make small talk and get the inside scoop on this place as they hopefully neared their destination.

“My only tips revolve around people. Melissa Elliot… don’t get on her bad side. I’m sure you know how Queen Bees work, she’s our’s. And uh, let’s see, a lot of boys would want to take a piece of your cake, coming from me, who thinks you’re hot… so be careful. Like, stay away from Rico. Fuck Rico.”

Well, that was actually quite useful. The blonde nodded, taking the boy’s advice willingly as they weaved around other students. Aiden would easily find out soon enough which guys were thirsting after his sister, so at least she was able to get a head start on who to avoid. “Get on Melissa’s good side and stay away from Rico. Got it. Anything else I should know?” Liv asked, appreciating Spike’s brief roadmap.

“Uh, I guess if you want some good friends. Sean Bergara, or Tuxedo Mask, a theater dweeb, and Ellie Roberts, sweetheart artist, would be a good start. But if you want… questionable friends, I got names for that too, but I’m sure you’ll know their name soon enough. Don’t be surprised if a fight happens today, and tomorrow, and the next day.” Approaching the sign-up table, Spike saw Cael, and happily hollered, “Cael, my man! It’s good to see you, sorry to interrupt. But, where’s the gremlin? This lovely girl here has her as a tour guide.”’

Looking over his shoulder, back at Liv, Spike gestured his thumb to Cael, “Good guy here too. Makes the best damn drinks at Plouf,” He did lean in, not so discreet, and whispered in Liv’s ear while Cael seemed distracted by a pale, mysterious boy, “A little bit of a gossip, but who isn’t nowadays?” This would be good for Liv to know, if she wants to be in the ‘know’ about everything and anything, Cael was your guy. He knew all the tea. Even tea that was still brewing. He's the first responder on the tea-train. The tea FAIRY!

Liv took a one look at Cael and immediately recognized him from Plouf. She and Trixie frequented there after school when either of their brothers was willing to drive them- the Almond Chai Lattes were her favorite. But who she also identified as another familiar face was Christian Barker, who stood only a few feet away. It was comforting to finally see someone from Liberty who she recognized walking the halls here at Rosefell, and especially Chris of all people. She had AP History with him last year and thought he was cute, so she made Trixie at the time do some reconnaissance to figure out who he was. The blonde stole a glance at the dark haired boy with a smirk, but looked back over to Spike and Cael quickly in order to pay attention.

"Oh, hey, Spike." Cael responded, breaking his gaze from the two handsome Liberty newcomers just long enough to glance at Spike. "Rae? I last saw her around the corner, she was actually going to find you. Olivia, right?" He confirmed, looking to Liv now and waving politely. "Sorry I can't be much help, your guess is as good as mine as to where she ended up. Can I still have a lollipop, though?"

“Damn, okay. Thanks, and duh you can. Here.” He placed way more lollipops than necessary in Cael’s hands, “I’m sure these boys over here would love something to suck too.” Not wasting any more time, Spike contemplated his next move, “I got an idea, follow me!” Instead of going to the entrance outside, or wasting any time searching like fools, they walked back and headed straight to the office that Spike rammed his face on.

Liv didn’t even get a chance to say thank you to Cael before Spike whisked her away back to where they were a few moments previous. She could have gotten whiplash from how quickly the boy was moving- it seemed as though when he wanted to do something, he needed to do it that second and not a moment later. But she didn’t mind. Spike had a good energy about him (although a little crude) and she could tell from only just meeting him that he meant well.

Entering the office, Spike was quick to scan the area. It was vacant, as to be expected. The two secretaries were probably indulging in breakfast sandwiches and drinking hot cocoa in the principal’s office. They loved using JPJ’s office when he was away. He had the best room in the house, and they had keys to it. His favorite secretary was Jennifer Apple, but he liked calling her ‘Applebottom’. To this day, she hasn’t corrected him, evening finding his goofiness endearing. There was no doubt he was her favorite too. Not wanting to be rude, he did call out, “Mizzzzzzzz Applebottom!”

Like he expected, she creaked the principal’s door open and smiled at him, “What do you need, Spike?” She had no ounce of annoyance or anger. Only a bright disposition and a kind smile. This seemed to be normal for her. Being interrupted by students for their little whims of the day.

“Melissa wants me to make an announcement, can I? You know for school spirit, wooooooo!”

“Make it quick, you know how Berkley feels about you kids using the system. Don’t worry, I got you. Now if you’ll excuse me, I gotta’ finish my bacon, egg, and cheese.” The young secretary winked at the boy, before closing the door and resuming her conversation with the other one.

Awesome. Too easy. Grinning at Liv, he went past the counter, beyond the point kids are permitted to enter, and went straight to Apple’s desk. Adjusting the mic, Spike sat in Apple’s seat and gave his acquaintance a thumbs up, “You asked, and you will receive.”

“But I didn’t ask for-”

Immediately afterwards, Spike pressed the red button and without a care in the world, talked to the whole school, inside and out of the building, “Yo, yo, yo. It’s your boy Spike, hoping all you cool kids are enjoying being back at school and for you Liberty peeps out there, welcome, man. It’s good to have you here, joining the Knights. Remember to get your fake rose from Tuxedo Mask and a lollipop from me, the guy in the knight suit. There’s also some breakfast shit in the cafeteria. Now, can Rachelle Rawlins please come to the main office? Rachelle Rawlins PLEASE come to the main office. I got a special delivery, just for you! BYEEEE!” He hung up, but then realized he forgot something, he pressed the button again, “Also Red, sorry for being an ass! DeVito didn’t mean it. Well I did, but you know... Kay, bye.”

That sure was one way to find Rae. The blonde laughed as the ever energetic Spike delivered his announcements, the nerves of her first day dissipating. Something about the way that he was acting was different from any Liberty kid she had met previously, and maybe that was because it was evident that Spike didn’t care about what you thought of him. Liv raised an eyebrow after he released the button and was off the air, “Special delivery?” She questioned, crossing her arms over her chest.

“It was that or bodacious blonde who is down for some funky shit with long legs and a short white dress on. I don’t need to make another girl mad today, so special delivery sounded a little better.” He grumbled to himself.

“Since you were kind enough to give me some tips, Spike, I’m going to give you one too… if you ever meet a kid named Aiden Howard, I suggest you run.”

Ellie was wide awake well before her first alarm rang. In fact, she was already in the bathroom putting on makeup when the familiar chimes of her phone sounded, indicating on a normal day that it was time to get out of bed. But today being the first day of school- not to mention the first day of the brunette’s senior year- meant that it was not just a regular day and she was stressed about it.

So many thoughts were running through the girl’s head that prevented her from getting a good night’s sleep. Most of them were centered around test scores, portfolio reviews, acceptances and rejections, but others were focused on tuition fees and purchasing supplies and the vast emptiness of her own wallet. The first day of school brought all of these anxieties to the surface in a way that they hadn’t been illuminated before- the final countdown was beginning and Ellie was running out of time. No matter how hard she worked, she always felt like she was one step behind where she needed to be when it came to her creative prowess as well as her finances. And those fears kept her up at all hours.

On top of all of the nerves she was already feeling about the beginning of her final year of high school, Ellie was also preoccupied with the intricacies of needing to make a good first impression. The students of Liberty High across town started at Rosefell today after their school shut down unexpectedly over the summer, which meant the brunette had more people she needed to appease and impress. The girl wasn’t popular in the slightest, but she didn’t want to fall to the bottom of the barrel when these new kids showed up, especially after hearing from her only Liberty friend, Christian, about how they dressed and acted on their campus previously. And so, the nerves and lack of sleep worked hand in hand to give Ellie ample time to get dressed and ready for the day.

She had picked her outfit the other evening- some of her best thrifted finds- but spent a decent amount of time in the bathroom applying products and powders to her fair skin to improve her complexion. If there was any day to be fortunate for good genes, it was today, as luckily not one pimple or blemish sullied her delicate features. With one final look in the mirror, satisfied with her appearance, Ellie grabbed her backpack and sketchbook before bounding down the stairs to find something quick for breakfast.

When she reached the bottom of the steps she was pleasantly surprised to be met with the delicious scent of pancakes that were sizzling on the stovetop, her mother standing in front of the burner flipping each one when they were golden brown and fluffy. With a warm smile, Ellie rested her chin on her mother’s shoulder and hugged her from behind before taking a plate and helping herself. “You didn’t have to make me breakfast you know.” She commented, standing at the kitchen island and digging in before her food got cold.

“I had a few minutes to spare- besides, it’s your last first day of school! I wanted to do something special.” Her mother Jennifer replied, continuing to make the rest of the batch of batter in order to stock the freezer with leftovers for the next few mornings. It made no sense to Ellie why Rosefell Elementary started later than the High School did, but nonetheless she was appreciative that it gave her mother, the Elementary School nurse, extra time to keep the house somewhat in order. “Your father had to go to the shop early this morning, but he told me to tell you to have a great day at school and he can’t wait to hear all about it tonight at dinner.”

Ellie smirked and nodded, continuing to enjoy the fresh stack of pancakes that sat before her. She was always appreciative that her parents worked hard to provide for their family, and didn’t mind that every now and again her mom and dad couldn’t be around for everything. They tried their best, and that was what mattered. The girl ate quickly, wanting to get to the school before the parking lot got too busy, and when she was finished took her plate over to the sink to clean and dry it. Working at the Yellow Rose Diner for all of her high school years had given the brunette a new appreciation for everything her mother did when she was a kid, so she always made a point to clear and wash her own dishes, even when she was running late.

“Thanks for breakfast, Mom, but I have to go show some of the Liberty kids around before my first class...” Ellie slung her bag over her shoulder and pressed her sketchbook against her chest. “Miki Park and Richard Diedrikson.” the brunette recited out loud, having committed the two names to memory. “Don’t you hate that I volunteer for just about everything?” She mused with a laugh.

Her mother chuckled, turning off the stove before walking over to where her daughter stood and pressing a light kiss on her forehead. “My sweet girl, you just always have to put everyone else before yourself, don’t you?” The older woman offered her daughter a smile before handing her the car keys that she had previously flung across the kitchen counter the day before.

“One day, karma is going to come back to do some amazing things for me. Until then, I’m at everyone else’s service. Love you!” Ellie chimed, blowing her mother a kiss before disappearing out the door towards her car, which she had lovingly named Cammy the Camry. Starting up the ignition, the brunette cautiously rolled out of the driveway and within minutes she was pulling into the Rosefell parking lot. As she found a spot and cut the engine, she took a breath and regained her composure, glimpsing at her reflection in the rearview mirror. “You’ve got this.” The girl murmured to herself- Lilith had gone on for hours once about mantras and manifesting your future, and for once, her friend had listened to her ramblings and took the advice in stride.

Ellie slipped out of her car, shutting and locking the door before waltzing over to her and Lil’s spot. It was a picnic table in front of the school that was underneath the shadiest tree- the two of them spent hours there when it was nice out, so much so that most people knew to avoid that specific table since the girls had claimed it. She could see that her best friend was a little bit preoccupied with Spike, Minty, Melissa, Rico, and some other people she didn't recognize, but knew she’d make her way over to their spot eventually. In the meantime, the brunette flipped open her sketchbook to the piece she had been working on for the past few days and continued to add to it, eraser shavings quickly appearing on the page as she refined her work.

After a few minutes, she looked up to see what was taking Lilith so long. Instead of meeting her friend’s eye, Ellie’s gaze was captured by a fancy looking Cadillac that had just rolled into the parking lot filled with who she knew were Liberty students. She watched as they filed out one by one and began walking towards the school…. which is when she saw him, as he sauntered confidently past the groups of students who seemed to move out of his path. A tall blonde who just didn’t look real, an adonis who she had never seen before but wished she had. He politely nodded and offered his pearly whites to those he passed by, and just for a second, he and Ellie made eye contact. And he smiled.

At first, she thought he was looking at someone else, but only after realizing the smile was indeed meant for her, Ellie felt a flutter in her chest and smirked back at the mystery boy before quickly looking down at her sketchbook to hide the blush that crept up on her cheeks.

Maybe things this year wouldn’t be so bad after all...
