Lord of the Rings: The Fate of the Rings

I'm always up for a LotR RP, but wouldn't it attract more people if it were set somewhere in the Third Age? Millennia after the Ring was gone pretty much only men were left in Middle-Earth, with all the elves gone to Valinor. The whole situation was more political than epic in fantasy terms, so it doesn't leave a lot of room for anything magical, and Lord of the Rings should be magical.

I participated in a tabletop game of LotR set during the War of the Ring in which we were tasked by Galadriel with bringing certain magical artifacts made in the First Age (like Turin's sword, some rings and pendants from Gondolin) to Grey Havens where Cirdan would take them to Valinor before the evil guys get hold of them, all while the war was raging everywhere. There was a certain 'will' system of some sort which controlled how the artifacts influenced the players. Something like this sounds similar (or almost identical) to your idea, but lets the players be more creative as they can play more races, more classes, with different powerful artifacts and have more interesting battles and encounters, and since most of Lord of the Rings fans are more familiar with this setting thanks to the movies and the trilogy, of course.

I should also say that you don't need a big group for this. You can play this game even with two or three players if not many people want to join, as it's more of a guerrilla squad type of story. This lets you have different obstacles along the way, like big bears, trolls, bandits, wargs, shapeshifters, as well as orcs and goblins, of course.

These are just my thoughts, of course; you don't have to listen to me. I'm a sucker for Middle-Earth, so I'll play any scenario. :-)

Definitely seconded. After the Third Age, a lot of the fantasy kind of dies out and the age of heroes and artifacts aren't really necessary anymore. So yea elves won't be around, goblins and orcs are severally weakened, and so on. But if we are still in the Third Age, everything is still pretty much a possibility.

Hollie's elation was a bit short lived as the news that they were going to Latvia all of a sudden. It was their first day back and already they were being asked to go on missions? What was that? The whole thing reeked of being more serious than what was currently being let on by the administration. The whole notion of this mission was alarming and even though Hollie wouldn't admit it openly, she was damn well afraid of being out in the field. Even with the veterans of the field like Colossus, she still felt unnerved by it all.

She took her snack and boarded the plan, keeping to herself as she went through the motions. She felt sick as her stomach felt like it was filled with helium. Thankfully she had an out. Nathan. She found him sitting towards the front of the plane, which she had to admit was a bit expected as she knew he had been yearning for this moment since day one. She felt better when she took the seat next to him but immediately felt that pang of fear bubble up inside her again so she slipped her arm around Nathan's and intertwined her fingers with his. She gave him a less than assured smile but she managed to keep up her facade of appearing strong.

"I-I think I have a bad feeling about this..." She whispered to her significant other, making sure no one else could hear her doubt. After all, she was supposed to be a senior to the others at this point. "You and I haven't been on a mission before but on our first day back this year they send us out and they're having the new kids join us, too?"
