Current I think watching fight scenes can help in general terms with writing combat, since it can give you an idea of flow and choreography.

At least if you're writing something you know, with knights.

I mean, depends on what you're writing, and the tone and theme of what you're writing. Trained armored knights were legitimately monstrous on the battlefield, so looking up how they fought helps.

As much as there's a lot of reasons twitter sucks, I genuinely don't want to see it die for the sake of all the artists who now rely on it. Hoping the shithead stops trying to directly administrate.

Fu Xuan, the Master Diviner

---Hm.

So there's some sort of catastrophic problem with not only one branch, but multiple branches of the Imaginary Tree? Travel between them has been a theoretical possibility for a considerable amount of time, but I had never seen any proof of it actually occurring directly. It's a considerable amount of process, even with consideration to myself.

Additionally, how did I fail to foresee this problem? Is it due to the origin being outside of the individual branches? There's a considerable number of unanswered questions.

At the same time, I cannot detect any insincerity. There is no reason for this 'Wynn' to lie, even before I utilize any form of divination to discern intent.

If something is a threat to an entire branch of the Imaginary Tree, an entire universe, it is something that cannot be ignored.

"Obviously, she discerned some value in your participation, Qingue," I comment as I step forward, "I would hope that is enough for you not to slack on this duty as well."

---And that the information of such an existential threat is not to overwhelming.

"In any case, while I have many questions I cannot see any reason to doubt your words," I say, addressing 'Wynn', "Something that is a threat to not just one but many branches of the Imaginary Tree would call for suitably extreme measures. As the Master Diviner of the Xianzhou, I offer my services, as well as Qingque's."

Why.

Why must I be here? We must this still be ongoing? I have accepted working alongside the Edreni men. In fact, I can admit that they have thus far performed admirably. There is no point in denying their accomplishments.

But being here is only serving as a strain on my composure. I cannot help but feel a growing sense of frustration the more I hear these people speak.

Can we not just be done with this, finish our food, and go to bed? It's not as if I can complain about receiving some form of reward, but I can certainly complain about the ongoing conversation.

I just want to leave.
Rylia Ainsberg

Fort Magrial

Hmph.

"My name is Rylia, not Lady," I assert, firmly. Did I introduce myself for no reason? Can't he call people by their proper names?

Whatever, at least he seems plenty aware of the best approach to the fort. I suppose I won't have to correct him on that. I can't exactly complain about the proposal to send the Nem to scout, either. Their kind isn't commonly seen this far North, but I don't need to be familiar with them to know that they're well-suited to handling scouting and infiltration while remaining mostly unseen. Of course, there's the question of if the nem who thought that card was actually impressive is the best choice for this, but I guess she's an adventurer so she must have some level of basic competency.

I cross my arms over my chest.

"I suppose I don't have any other complaints, though," I add after a few moments.

In any case, there's no point in delaying. Those goblins need to be taken care of.

Fort Magrial must have made for a fairly imposing sight when it was fully intact. Not that I'm bothered, of course. From what I can recall of Talderian forts, it looks like it was a fairly large garrison that would have been stationed here. Which, in turn, means there's probably a lot of room for goblins.

Not that it changes anything. They're still going to get crushed all the same.

---It's a mess. Not just because of the state the fort is in, but because of its current occupants. There's animal bones everywhere, some hanging on strings or otherwise displayed on wooden spikes. Smashed pottery, too. I guess they were looking for something. Some of it's clearly things they've just discarded outside the fort, while others seem like whatever kind of decorations a bunch of raiding goblins think look the most intimidating.

Hmph. More than anything else, it's just ugly.

"Do you see anything---"

I pause for a moment. What was the Nem girl's name? She'd never said anything, just showed off that weird card.

...

Was that what she wanted us to call her? It's what Wyndham had called her. Nnngh...

"... Raven?"

I finish my question with a small sigh.

???

"... Hm."

I have known Qingque far too long to take her word on its face when it comes to matters such as this. I don't need to divine the truth to conclude that she is, at the very least, attempting to heavily mislead me for fear of being punished. Before anything else, I think it is time to unveil to her the cold, hard truth of her situation.

"If you expect me to believe that, Qingque, you are quite terribly mistaken," I respond without a moment's hesitation, "You informed me of where you were going, and even if this explanation is true you did not inform anyone of where you were going after winning this supposed prize. That alone is reason to doubt your words."

I let out a heavy sigh.

"I suppose it would be foolish to level an immediate punishment upon you in this situation, however..."

Pulling my attention away from my subordinate, no matter how frustrated I may be that she saw fit to try and mislead me, I contemplate the situation at hand.

'China'.

'Tokyo'.

These are the names of locations that I have never before heard of. While I am not omnipotent, certainly, I am well aware of most notable locations across the universe.

Even before noting the peculiarities of this space, this would be a significant detail. There is no reason to currently suspect that anyone else is constructing these unfamiliar names from whole cloth.

"Realms, you say?" I comment, tilting my head towards one of the men, "I have a suspicion something along those lines may be the case."

The Xianzhou Fleet is well-known across the galaxy. Even without knowing the name of individual ships, it would be strange to encounter someone completely and utterly aware of us unless they hailed from a planet that has yet to achieve travel beyond its upper atmosphere.

So, it is an easy test.

"Tell me, are any of you aware of the Xianzhou Fleet?"

Fu Xuan, the Master Diviner

Xianzhou Luofu -> ???

The duties of the Master Diviner are paramount for the entirety of the Xianzhou Fleet. To see the future is to witness the path forward, to divine the best possible outcome is to select the strategem that the Xianzhou will adopt for every single motion. It is only through dedication to this duty, through sureness in oneself, that these choices can guide the future.

To put it simply, shirking these duties is pointless and destructive.

One must be a beacon, a guiding star that the fleet can follow. One must dedicate themselves to that purpose.

Of course, it is a purpose that is carried with pride.

---That being said, at times a particularly long day may lead to one needing to unwind somewhat.

Not, of course, that I am the sort of person who accepts laziness. Slacking off is simply not acceptable for one in my position especially. However, utilizing time to refresh oneself in order to approach work energized and prepared for what is to come is far from unwise.

It is for that purpose that I have purchased this Startaro Bubble Tea. The sugar content? It is merely because it will energize me and refresh my mind, leaving me a sharp as the edge of a Cloud Knight's blade.

---Well, I cannot ignore the fact that I prefer this flavor to my other options. But there is no need to dwell on such matters.

This day was a rather full one. Tomorrow appears to be less so, but at the same time those who are unprepared reap the rewards for their lack of foresight.

Would it not be embarrassing for the Master Diviner to lack in foresight?

Of course, such a thing would never happen to me. In fact, the very nature of one who fills the role of the Master Diviner means that I cannot lack in foresight.

I straighten in my stead, and lift the straw for my bubble tea. After the foiled attempt at freeing Hoolay by the Borisin and the end of the successful conclusion of the Wardance, no direct crises have threatened the Luofu. While this does not mean I can act like some sort of shiftless slacker, it does mean that even full days do not carry with them the same air of immediate severity.

---Speaking of slackers...

It is rather strange, not seeing Qingque there as I perform my divination duties. And not because she is slacking, but because she isn't present at all. I wonder how she is doing on the Yuque. I hope, at least, she is well.

Not that it is of particular concern to me, but she is my subordinate. It would be poor form for me to lack any care at all for her wellbeing, regardless of her habits. There's no other reason.

Still, she should be ready for further work when she returns.

Not that she ever is, but even with the gift of the Ominscia sometimes one can wish for the impossible.

I raise the straw back, preparing to pierce the lid of my bubble tea, and---

The air feels different. The scenery is different.

Suddenly, it's blurring---

"Uwah?!"

---Ah... ahh...

The sharp impact travels up through the point of landing and into the base of my spine. It's not going to do any damage, but it certainly doesn't feel pleasant.

My chair is gone. My desk is gone.

Everything is gone, instead replaced with unfamiliar buildings.

And my bubble tea...

...

...

The lid has torn open, the strain of its impact on the stony ground having proven too much. Everything within has burst out, spilling onto the ground and completely, utterly, undrinkable.

...

---To begin with, I cannot forgive whatever force has brought me to this location. It's either some form of physical transportation, or a manner of illusion similar to that of a Heliobus. Either way, there is a good reason that I am not permitted to leave the Xianzhou fleet, and an illusory assault is also unacceptable.

And they have also ruined my drink and unceremoniously dumped me onto the ground.

To say I am displeased would be an understatement.

"... Nnngh..."

Irritated, I rise to my feet. There's no point in being shocked, as much as I cannot help my eyes widening at the sight of the unfamiliar surroundings. No, it is for the best that I focus on analyzing my new location and determining its nature. The thought of something being able to assault me directly from outside the Luofu and remove me to a different location is a concerning one, but I cannot rule it out even if an illusory attack would be the preferable explanation.

I reach my feet and close my eyes. Without the benefit of the greater terminal, on such short notice I cannot read the future over a great length of time. But I can still---

... Hm?

... It's dark. There's nothing there at all.

The past, then?

---

My heartbeat quickens ever so slightly. It is one thing to teleport me to some other place, but to cut off my divination...

No. There's no change in the functions of the Ominiscia. I can discern that much. And the Matrix of Prescience, too, is without any malfunction.

Then, could it be a trait of this location? Perhaps...

I shut my eyes once more. This time, I will not attempt to look into the past or the future, but instead the unseen present.

The image of a great plaza fills my mind. Unfamiliar faces, a... pair of girls who... are her hands---

I open my eyes, feeling heat flood into my cheeks for a moment.

What, exactly, was that?! Why... was she... they...

...

N-nevermind.

There was another face there. A familiar one. Not only do I have an idea as to what is occurring here already, but I have a goal in mind as well. It is only about a block away, so there's no need to further delay.

In fact, as I arrive---

"The 'Golden Hour', Qingque?"

The words leave my mouth no sooner than I hear her voice. She told me she had gone to the Yuque. I had, only moments before being brought here, considered what she may be doing and how she may be doing.

But she wasn't at the Yuque at all, was she? She told me as much, but I'm well aware of where this 'Golden Hour' is located.

"That certainly does not sound like anywhere on the Yuque, hm?"

I will not allow her to get away with this, even with consideration to the bizarre situation that we find ourselves in.

---And those girls were indeed quite close before stepping away from one another. At least they look just as embarrassed as I felt witnessing that, even if it was not in person.

"---As for the rest of you, you were all teleported to this location without warning, were you not?" I ask, casting my gaze towards the unfamiliar faces. I may as well confirm my suspicions.
@zygardian: It is, yes.
  • Name: Fu Xuan
  • Gender: Female
  • Appearance: A petite, slender girl of around 140 cm/4'7 feet in height. She has pink hair and golden eyes, and is dressed in fine clothing typical of both her station and the style of the Xianzhou as a culture. Her short stature and rather youthful appearance are best not pointed out.
  • Personality: An exceptionally self-confident and no-nonsense person. Perhaps it is because of this that she is suited to her position as the Master Diviner. For Fu Xuan, every decision she makes is in service of the best possible outcome. As one who can see the future, it's not exactly an unfounded belief. Given her history, and her capabilities, not only can Fu Xuan perceive the future but at times she believes there are certain events that will always happen, a belief driven by the circumstances of the death of her mentor. At the same time, she must select choices that lead to the best possible future that she predicts, no matter what those possibilities may be. That is the duty of the Master Diviner.

Despite her seriousness about her duties, Fu Xuan is nevertheless quite temperamental and possessed of a rather sharp tongue, with a habit stating the actions of opponents are pointless or rudimentary. She often speaks in a flowery, rather wordy fashion that some find difficult to understand, though when taken off-guard she can struggle to keep this demeanor intact. Due to her pride, she can find it difficult to earnestly ask for help from others if she has not explicitly foreseen that it is the best path forward. She also has no lack of ambition, desiring to see the current general of the Xianzhou Luofu retire so she may assume his position.

And yet, her difficulty with seeking help from others is not her only somewhat childish trait. Befitting of her appearance, Fu Xuan is deeply fond of sweets, in particular preferring Startaro Bubble tea to more refined beverages. While this is in part due to the sugar content keeping her energy high on particularly long days, she is also simply very fond of the taste. She also possesses a mild complex about her height, which will rocket to the forefront of her personality whenever someone else makes the foolish decision to mention it.

It would be wise not to compare her size to a certain planet's heaters while she is in earshot.
  • Brief History: The daughter of a family of Stargazers, born on the Xianzhou Yuque. This important history, and his own predictions, lead to the current Master Diviner taking Fu Xuan as his pupil. Shortly before this, she was granted the Omniscia, the 'third eye' implanted in her forehead that serves as a portion of her divination ability. In a painful stupor after its implantation, she witnessed her past, present, and future simultaneously. This included her eventual ascension to the position of Master Diviner. Indeed, her tutelage began not long after, and she studied intensively and had frequent conversations on the nature of prediction and the future with her mentor and current Master Diviner.

The years spent learning under him were happy ones, filled with frequent conversation of the matters of what is predetermined and what is human will.

It was during one such conversation that the Master Diviner revealed the only reason he chose Fu Xuan as his pupil is due to having foreseen her future as the Master Diviner. Not her talents, or her family history, simply his divination.

Despite her aspirations, she could not help but be incensed by learning of the truth, and the second revelation caused her anger to boil over as her mentor revealed that she would be the reason for his death.

Fu Xuan left the Yuque in an enraged state, departing from her mentor and carrying a determination to prove his prediction wrong. She would never kill the man she respected so much. She arrived at the Xianzhou Luofu and performed divination there, with centuries rolling by.

Eventually, the Denizens of Abundance began to stir and a massive army arose to mount an assault on the Xianzhou Fanghu. Fu Xuan divined that a head-on attack would result in loss, but the Xianzhou could turn the tide if they fought a defensive battle.

Her advice was brushed aside due to the sheer size of the attacking force.

What followed was the brutal decimation of the Xianzhou forces, playing out before Fu Xuan's eyes.

Rather then succumbing to anger and despair, however, an idea arose in her mind. By using the Cloudpeer Telescope onboard the Xianzhou Yuque, it could be sent to the Fanghu and used transmit a signal to Lan the Hunt, the Aeon followed by the Xianzhou. THEIR arrow could annihilate the attacking Abundance forces, though the collateral damage would by extensive it was their best remaining chance.

The one who sent the signal would certainly die due to the very arrow that would end the war.

It was only then, once her proposal had been accepted, that Fu Xuan realized that only the Master Diviner, the man who had been her mentor, possessed the authority to carry out the signal transmission.

The arrow fired, the war ended, and as Master Diviner Fu Xuan guides the Xianzhou to the best possible future.
  • Universe of Origin: Honkai: Star Rail
  • Equipment: Fu Xuan's chief pieces of equipment are the Matrix of Prescience and the Omniscia implanted in her forehead. Together, they serve as the mechanism through which she is able to so precisely divine the future. Combined with divination techniques, they allow the Master Diviner to peer into the future and then act on the information which she sees. This can be used in the line of her typical duties of providing tactical and navigational guidance to the Xianzhou fleet, or for more immediate purposes. Without the use of the larger terminal on the Luofu, however, the typical extent of personal divination is clearest only with immediate events, such as the next move of an opponent or the words that will be spoken in a conversation. Further looks into the future become far less distinct without the use of the Divination Commission's full faculties. Additionally, the Matrix can be used in conjunction with a barrier to create a defensive field that operates by mitigating damage and predicting the actions of enemies. Given that, as a Xianzhou native, Fu Xuan's body continuously rejects the implanted Omniscia, the already-present aches can become far stronger while in this state and potentially cause her to faint from the strain.
  • Abilities: Chief among Fu Xuan's abilities is her divination. Even without utilizing the Matrix of Prescience and the Omniscia, Fu Xuan can utilize divination techniques that can allow her to make basic predictions about the coming future. These can include shifts in the weather, or the surface-level intentions of a single target. While Fu Xuan is not a soldier, it would be wrong to say she is incapable of combat. The Master Diviner possesses multiple techniques with which to defend herself and assault foes. Fu Xuan can construct barriers, both shields formed of geometric patterns of light and wider-ranging barriers that can defend a larger area. These barriers can also be used offensively, in order to push enemies away or constrain them to a limited area. They can be overcome with sufficient damage, and stronger barriers require longer periods of construction. By utilizing her divination, however, Fu Xuan can begin constructing more powerful barriers ahead of time in order to assist in defending against attack.

The Master Diviner can also attack using directed blasts of quantum energy. By carrying out a swift ritual, inscribing it into the air in the form of light, Fu Xuan can cause this blast to manifest directly on the body of a target, even bypassing some forms of armor. The destructive blast has a short range, but is capable of tearing through even firm and powerful flesh and pulverizing bone or shearing through metal. These blasts can also take the form of directed beams of light, and can very in size and intensity depending on time taking to cast them. Fu Xuan uses divination offensively, predicting the movements of a target and their most vulnerable points in order to deliver maximum damage.

Her most powerful offensive technique requires some preparation, leaving her vulnerable, but at the same time is considerably potent. By constraining one or more targets, though typically its maximum number of targets is restricted by their initial proximity. Once the barrier is formed, Fu Xuan compresses it, potentially crushing some targets as she forces them into a smaller area. This is accomplished by utilizing hand signs to complete the ritual. After being compressed, the interior of the barrier detonates. The quantum explosion within is sufficient to dissolve flesh and bone and even boil some metals. This offensive ritual, however, is difficult to use against gigantic foes, and Fu Xuan is vulnerable while performing it.

Finally, as a Xianzhou native, Fu Xuan is an immortal who no longer ages. Her body, while fragile, can heal from serious damage. This includes severed limbs or destroyed organs, though enough damage will overcome her regeneration. Even a severed head may be repaired if placed close enough to her body.

"Very well, there's no point in wasting any more time."

I raise my staff, pointing it towards the nearest portion of the blue mist. Certainly, I need more observation to determine its origin, but when it comes to simply clearing a space---

Well, it's utterly trivial.

I'll use myself as the first target, and the mist as the second.

The threads of myself spread out. In my mind's eye I can see them, glistening, shining things like spider silk, magical energy rushing as if along my veins and outwards, pouring down the threads like dew. The power to manipulate the world around me manifesting inside of my brain, a visualization of the invisible force extending from my being and the staff gripped in my hand.

In reality, only a faint haze, a distortion in the air, signals what is about to occur, though the nested triangle pattern dyed in purple spreading from the head of my staff, light tracing the lines that make up its holographic structure, is a clear indication of my casting process.

Personally, I'd love to take samples, but that can wait. For now, it's time to find out just where it's coming from.

I part my lips.

"Repulse."

The near-invisible haze vibrates, distorting the air as the triangle pattern flashes. The threads within my mind twist together, forming a flat surface that rushes away from me, a resounding thrum echoing through the room.

The blue, mana-rich gas wavers as it's forced aside, as if a massive hand reached in to wave it away. A bare spot on the floor is immediately visible.

I lower my staff.

"There."
