If you're going by UK conventions of knighthood/nobility, yes. It also would be pronounced like the "dam" in "madame," rather than like a Dick Tracy "daym."

YES, YES! THE DEMON KING'S LACKEYS RETURN TO HIS CALL! *throws head back and laughs; triggers a coughing fit*

Are we all humans? Or did the Houses get freaky?

If players want to have non-human ancestry on their mother's side, it's possible, but rather than a full half-blood they'd be more likely to be quarter-blooded or less.

The only civilization-building races that aren't hostile to humans in this setting are Elves and Dwarves. Among the Demon races there are some capable of cross-breeding, but most of those hybrids wouldn't be in any way accepted among human society except, with a VERY slight possibility, half-Devils---only because they'd be the only hybrid who wouldn't be outright recognizable so long as they were able to hide their horns and didn't inherit a bad skin/eye coloration.

I wrote more stuff about the races but I don't wanna be too wall-of-texty since I don't wanna risk scaring people away yet, so it's in a hider for now. It's not required reading or anything.
What is the magic system for this setting?

I'm debating whether actual magic Magic will be present; if it is, it'll likely be an esoteric and difficult system.

As for the primary "gimmick" power though, that would be Aura. In this setting, when a warrior attains a certain level of physical/mental/spiritual balance and a certain level of mastery in their chosen art, they can "Awaken" their Aura. It takes the form of a colored (unique to individuals) gas-like "energy" that coats their bodies. Once one is able to Awaken their Aura at will, they can enhance their physical attributes to become stronger, faster, more durable, etc. However, the amount of Aura one possesses is much akin to cardiovascular fitness---it takes further training to develop it, and overuse of Aura not only tires a person out, but can put dangerous levels of stress on their muscles and bones.

After Aura has been Awakened, however, it can be further refined into a number of specialized Types. Before the Demon War, it was generally considered impossible to use more than one Type of Aura---those incredibly rare few who could perform such feats were considered irregular existences or legendary prodigies. However, war tends to drive innovation, and when humans learn something is no longer "impossible," it tends to rapidly become more prevalent. After Players begin their Second Life, they may very well reach heights far beyond what was possible before!

The types are:
  • Augmentation: The most common type. Coating anything in Aura makes it more durable, better at its function, etc. A sword becomes sharper, a shield can absorb more damage---even a wooden stick could become like a bar of steel. The Aura crystallizes.
  • Sensation: The least exhausting type, but also considered to be the weakest. One's five senses become superhuman in nature, but one of the five will also become able to detect "life" and Aura, even from a distance. Users of this type can also suppress their own Aura, which makes them supernaturally harder to detect. The Aura's center becomes a dark shadow.
  • Shaping: The second rarest type, equally as exhausting as Augmentation. The Aura itself becomes malleable and stronger. Once one has "fixed" a shape in their mind, their aura will take on that physical quality. It could be used to extend the reach of a sword, or to add a dense ball of spikes to the end of a chain, and so forth. Note that a fixed shape can't be changed. The Aura's texture matches that which it imitates.
  • Projection: The second most exhausting type, as rare as Sensation. From a channeled object, the Aura is released over a distance. Using this type with a sword could create a crescent shaped wave of cutting force, or if you covered an arrowhead in Aura you might cause it to release a sort of explosion on impact. The Aura's center brightens like a white-hot flame.
  • Conversion: The rarest and most exhausting type of Aura, it converts one's auric energy into another type of natural phenomenon. One might cause icy frost to cover their weapon and spread from contact, or it might burst into flames. Like Shaping, only a single phenomena can be "fixed" by the user, but its uses are quite versatile. The Aura takes on the physical qualities of the phenomenon while maintaining its color.

Note that I am very open to feedback on this because I know I have a habit of making things overly complex! Any questions, suggestions, and concerns are welcome!
If Zeroth is making an RP, I'm always in.

One question I have is what does it mean to be a part of House Kaides? I would assume it means our characters are part of one of the three big noble families, but it also sounds like there are quite a few of us; enough to have their own college even? So are we all part of the same family tree; cousins or siblings? Or is it more like several families under one banner?

*dramatic cape flair* MY LOYAL SUBJECT RETURNS!

House Kaides funds and administrates the Collegem Yllustre, which is known as the most prestigious knight training academy/military school/court university in the kingdom (based on this historical ducal academy). There are far more than just Kaides family members in attendance, though.

To be part of House Kaides is to be part of the three most powerful and most prominent noble families in the kingdom. Roughly a thousand years ago, the "Yllustrian Kings" forcefully unified various "brutal and primitive" tribes in this land, but three of those tribes swore allegiance to him instead of fighting. The three Houses of Kaides, Arkivum, and Noxicana are the descendants of those tribals. House Kaides prides itself on producing strong knights---which, in this setting's context, can mean any kind of warrior. Swordsmen, mace-and-shield wielding tanks, martial artists, archers, whatever.

Depending on how many Players we have, it might not be feasible for everyone to be from the same direct lineage. But this is a setting where a high ranking noble who has enough power and wealth can have multiple wives, so my original plan was for everyone to be the offspring, legitimate or not, of House Patriarch Martenos Kaides. However, the Patriarch could easily have a younger brother with his own many children, or there could be an uncle of the previous generation who's the father of any "older" characters, and so forth.

While it's relevant by the way: The definition of a "generation" for the purpose of this RP is anywhere between 20-30 years, so not EVERYONE has to attend the knight academy if they don't like the idea. And even those who want to attend the schooling don't have to start as 14 year olds.
Wow, this sounds just amazing. I'm currently reading "Regressing as the reincarnated bastard of the sword clan" and "Reincarnated as a genius Prodigy of a prestigious family" and I'm loving the idea. I'd love to participate!

I'm pretty sure I've also checked those out, lol, although I'm not sure I'm currently up to date on them. But yeah, they're exactly the kind of examples to look at for this kind of RP! I know some isekai flavored ones have been done (because at least two of them were mine, lmao) but I don't know if anyone's tried the "Regression" fad yet.

Glad to have you! If you have any questions or suggestions I'm all ears!

@Xaltwind@Tally Dor

"...That is a person, yes?" Akitsugu replied as Darryl pointed towards the mass of red hair. As they came closer, the blacksmith-slash-swordsman began to move at an angle away from the carpenter, making an arc around so that even if the person standing on the knell could see them both coming, they wouldn't be able to keep both men in sight at the same time. If things got violent, then...

But that wasn't what anyone wanted, hopefully. There weren't any goblins, so had this person simply over-reacted? Or had the little beasts been scared off and run away?

"Ah! You're a dwarf like Mr. Brom!" spoke up the red-head once he'd gotten a little closer. Then, cupping his hands so as to amplify his voice, he called up to the strange individual. "Ho, there! We mean no harm! What's all this noise about goblins?"

Hopefully, whoever it was would come on down and have civil conversation. Although it seemed like whatever the group had found in the way of food might end up not being enough, if newcomers kept waltzing out of the woods...

♫ Those piled up "failures"...will become the key to "victory!" ♫

Failures, all of you.

They told you that yours was "the weakest generation" House Kaides had ever seen. Your generation was blamed for the fall of one of the Three Great Clans; for all their losses to their rivals in Houses Arkivum and Noxica. Since the time of the first Yllustrian kings, Kaides had served the Royal Family of Luzia as its strongest, most loyal sword. Because of you, that sword was broken. Because of you, the kingdom fell. Because of you, the Demons won.

It didn't matter that Luzia acted too late. The Elven civil war, the peasant revolts in neighboring Geviel, and the decimation of tiny Briterra right across the kingdom's border; none of these events provoked alarm, because the people trusted in the strength of House Kaides to protect them. The strength that your generation lacked.

Before the war, you struggled and suffered just to make it out of Kaides' Collegem Yllustre alive. From the age of 14, your days became an endless cycle of training, bullying, and failure. As one of direct blood to the House, you were expected to perform above and beyond the expectations of any Vassal Families---or, at the very least, better than those riffraff squires seen as little more than fodder to whet Kaides' appetite for battle. Yet even for those of you who came of age, reaching 21 years before the war, you never truly "graduated." You had not even managed to undergo the Awakening of your Aura. To House Kaides, it did not matter that a common warrior might train their entire lives to unlock that power---you were of Kaides, therefore to be the exception was to meet the standard. Some of you never finished Collegem at all. There was just no point in staying.

But the war came regardless. Some of you were still in training, others had tried to make ends meet however they could. A few of you were even banished from the House outright---others of you settled for licking boots and bearing the weight of indignity, so that you could keep a roof over your head. Then, in 1012 YC, an army unlike anything Luzia had ever seen marched on its borders. For five more grueling years, you went through battles that were more like meat grinders, over and over again. And somehow, where those stronger than you fell...you stayed alive. You lost so much. Friends, family---even those precious few things you thought you could hold onto, what little dignity the Kaides and other Houses had not stripped from you. The Demons ripped it all away. Still you survived, until the very end.

Until you witnessed the Demon King himself take the field.

You, and the rest of Humanity, died that day amidst flames and ruin. As you slipped into darkness, at least there was finally peace. No more hardship. No more pain. No more failure to live up to a legacy you had never asked for. Then you opened your eyes, and found the world to be familiar yet strange. A memory surfaced, yet the image of your past was identical to your present...had everything you experienced been a dream? No...Somehow, you have returned...

Ten years into the past...

If you've ever read stories like "A Returner's Magic Should be Special," "Swordmaster's Youngest Son," or "Return of the 8th Class Mage," you may be familiar with this genre some call "Regression," or in gamer speech, "New Game Plus." The essential premise is that the Player Characters have returned to an earlier point in time during their lives after death---and now, making use of the future knowledge and experiences they've retained, they have a chance to change their fates! Will you try and prevent the events that led to your kingdom's defeat in this great war against monsters and demons? Will you try to become stronger and throw off the title of "Failed Generation," or get revenge on those who disparaged you? It all depends on how you use your new advantages!

At the time of Character Creation, Players will give a summary of how certain things in their First Life went. There will also be a section where their abilities, such as their fighting skills or their "Aura," will be listed. Even if someone is "talentless," they have no doubt gained SOMETHING over the course of ten years, especially when they had to fight for their lives during this terrible war. Those [EXPERIENCES] will stay with you after you wake up in the past, and act like a sort of "currency" that your character can "spend" in exchange for greater strength! You will also gain [EXPERIENCE] and update your Character Sheet when you accomplish different milestones throughout the RP, which will be reflective of your character growing more and more powerful!

Don't worry, there aren't any dice or mathematics involved; this is solely a mechanic to merge narrative and gameplay, and allow me as GM to see a Character's abilities at a glance whenever I need to make comparisons. I've always enjoyed "NUMBER GO UP" in both videogames and RPs, so I choose to incorporate such things in my own games.

In addition, I plan for a big part of this RP to depend on the Players themselves---because everyone has freedom within certain boundaries to decide how their First Life went, I as the GM will be trying to link the pieces together to help flesh out a unified narrative. For instance, if one Player's backstory includes a particularly nasty NPC who was their instructor at the Collegem, and another Player's backstory talks about how they almost died during a survival training exercise, I might try to link those things together! Maybe that NPC was the instructor in charge of that particular survival exercise, and they INTENTIONALLY abandoned the Players to try and get rid of them! So, when that incident comes around AGAIN in the Second Life, the Players are extra motivated to not only get top marks in the exercise, but maybe bloody that NPC's nose a little bit.

Of course, there's the over arching story of the Demon King and his hordes making war against the Kingdom of Luzia...Even if your character just wants to use their Second Life to make things a little easier for themselves, it might be hard to keep your own peace when the world is being burned down around you...

Those of you who are interested, please feel free to ask questions, leave commentary, or critique!

Akitsugu
Early Evening
@Xaltwind

Once he'd recovered his breath from Darryl's hearty greeting, Akitsugu managed a small smile as they walked back towards the others. He folded his arms in his sleeves, and every so often looked up at the sky just for the view as they talked.

"Fortunately, that girl's words were somewhat exaggerated." he explained to the carpenter. "The smithy is still fixable. I don't know how she managed to put a brand new hole in the roof," He breathed deeply, controlling his anger, "But so long as the furnace remains intact and she returns my tools, I should be able to get to work as soon as I have a steady supply of fuel." He looked towards the forest and the corner of his mouth dipped a bit. "I was hoping to make another trip for more firewood, but I think too much time has passed. I don't know if we should risk venturing out after dark until we know the area better."

As they approached, it seemed the village had yet again seen the arrival of newcomers. There was another man in a cart, though this one looked more finely dressed than the old merchant and much younger---but, beyond him, from somewhere outside town, came a loud voice calling over the rooftops.

"...What are they saying about goblins?" he asked Darryl. His hands came out of his sleeves, and once more he gripped Miyusahime's scabbard with one thumb against the tsuba. His brow furrowed and his voice grew more tense, but unlike his spat with MacKinnon there was a calmness to the pressure---a heavy weight ready to drop, not a kettle boiling over. "Are we being attacked?"
Great advice, although I was looking to have a more collaborative and less hands on approach for this, but I think I might pivot. It's been years since I've ran an RP so I gotta shake the rust off the chains.

By that, do you mean you'd want Players to come up with the plot elements, design antagonist characters, or something else along those lines? If that's the case, you could make a list of things you'd want Player input on, or just ask them the same questions I pointed out before--"What do you want to see in this RP?" basically, but maybe more specific.

Do you have a Character Sheet drafted yet? For a collaborative plot, knowing what kind of characters you'd be looking at would probably help a lot. Like I mentioned before, getting characters to tie their backstories to each other or to other elements of the RP has, in my experienced, helped a lot.

I dunno what these Guard Tales are, but can they hold a candle to the classics? XD

It's cool, you two have already informed me that you've got stuff going on, so don't feel like you need to rush.
