Dervish Let's get volatile

To the team’s credit, there didn’t seem to be much opposition to the proposal of burying the Husks rather than heroically become victims of a synthetic cannibal horde. There was a hasty effort to assist Salissa’s barrier with energy pylons, but that was going to go about as well as sticking a wad of used chewing gum into a dam breach and hope it would hold back several thousand tonnes of water. Sure enough, she was forced to retreat with the assistance of Skarr’s charity as a pack mule and the wave of mealy-mouthed bastards resumed. The brief window of opportunity at least gave Rykarn a chance to stock up on thermal clips and reload the grenade launcher, which was getting unsettlingly low on heavy munitions. Over the comms, the krogan heard Ja’Far counting his kills.

Thumbing his comm link, Rykarn interjected. ”Counting, really? You’re going to lose count before they pick the skin from your bones. Besides, I’m at forty by now, at least.” he said, arching his grenade launcher at the cluster that had been clawing at the barrier. There wouldn’t be a better shot. The heavy weapon recoiled heavily in Rykarn’s hands and the high-explosive projectile sailed through the air in a spiraling arc, landing squarely in the chest of the first Husk in the charging wall, knocking it back and detonating before the creature hit the ground. Flames and shrapnel expanded outwards violently, immediately dismembering a large group of them within a few meter radius to the point of “killing” them, and crippling several more that persistently kept trying to come despite most of their bodies ceasing function. Another shot had a similar result, and normally it would have been enough to turn the tide of battle, but right now, Rykarn was feeling very much so like that piece of chewing gum heroically trying to stop fate.

And I still have a free drink on my tab. What a time to remember that. he thought, switching to his Striker again when he noticed a scientist being wrangled up with biotic pull. Vella had attempted to prevent an escape, but unfortunately was set upon by Husks immediately. They were running out of time; the more time they spent picking the ones off themselves, ten more would take their place. They had perhaps minutes left, and the asari managed to free herself of her aggressors, letting Rykarn focus on what was important.

Getting that damn tunnel collapsed. Anderson agreed, anyways; the order was more or less given to destroy the tunnel. Suited the krogan fine, in any case.

”Get clear! I’m bringing the roof down!” Rykarn bellowed, grabbing a Hornet with one hand and his Striker in the other, charging forward to get a better shot at the placed mines; he’d need to get a clear shot, otherwise he ran the risk of breaking the mines free with chunks of rubble without detonating them properly. A few of the vanguard Husks that were getting through the heavy crossfire rushed him, the first was swatted aside with the heavy assault rifle and the second was brought down with a burst of submachine-gun fire, the hard-hitting Cerberus arm doing respectable damage to the thing’s chest, blowing viscous grey-blue fluid out through a serious of exit wounds as the lights literally vanished from the Husk’s eyes. Rykarn barely registered this, continuing on as his blood rage built, his vision starting to blur and his hands shaking as the need to kill and brutalize his enemies began to make his blood boil. The krogan had to try and keep this under control; he’d mess the shot up if he couldn’t hold his gun still. He emptied the Hornet carelessly against a few more Husks, his trigger control more or less becoming a thing of thirty seconds ago, killing three more of the monsters as a forth broke through to an over-heated firearm. Not bothering with finess, Rykarn punched the Husk in the face with the weapon so forcefully that it punctured the skull, splitting the face in two as the barrel got buried at least five inches in the skull. He roared defiantly at the rest of the Husks, grabbing one by the face and slamming it into another. This was getting stupid; krogan charges tended to work as a psychological weapon of unstoppable might when your enemies were capable of feeling fear, or well, anything, Rykarn was more or less just making their meal come to them.

”I’LL TEAR YOU ALL APART, YOU PYJAK SHITS!” he bellowed, barely registering his shield capacitors being worn down by the swarm that was now forming around him. Crushing a few more with the heavy Striker’s butt and barrel, his primal instinct to utterly eviscerate his enemies starting to override his rational thinking, which he had to pull himself back from.
”Focus, you idiot!” he rebuked himself, breaking free from the encirclement a few meters, not buying himself much space, but enough that he had a clear shot of the Cain mines mounted. A Husk jumped on his back, trying to pry at his helmet.

[I]Just a couple shots. Do it. He thought, breaking through his rage just enough to put the mines in focus. Shouldering the weapon and taking an aimed shot, the head’s up display in his visor linked to where the barrel was pointing, and lining up with the centermost mine, to the right, he took the shot.

A great explosion filled the tunnel, the deafening thunder of collapsing foundation and stone more than a bit reminiscent of a building being brought down, and dust immediately flooded the area; Rykarn knew anyone without a full helmet were going to be regretting that decision as soon as they were breathing dry dust by the lungful. Reaching up and grabbing the Husk by the neck off his back, Rykarn ripped the thing from his heavy frame and threw it to the ground forcefully, stomping its head with a massive boot, popping the humanoid skull like an overripe melon. He knew that his armour was going to smell like shit when he went to clean it. Turning to face the onslaught of Husks that had unfinished business with him, Rykarn opened fire at near blank range, the cryo-imbued munitions breaking many of them into frozen chunks of putrid meat. Among the creatures emerging from the dust cloud was a Cannibal, the hideous amalgamation of batarian and human bodies. It would have to do. There was still half of the mines left to detonate.

Charging the Cannibal as it open fire at Rykarn, the krogan grabbed the thing and kept running, using its bulk to force his way through a crowd of Husks to get a clearer shot at the remaining mines, now largely concealed by dust. At this point, he would be aiming at very dim lights through the particulates, which was less than ideal. Throwing the thing off of him, his shoulder plate now soaked with saliva and the finish tarnished by teeth of the thing trying to chew through it to get to him, Rykarn took aim at the first blinking light he saw and opened fire at it, and towards either side where he’d recalled the other mines were vaguely laid out. The explosion went off as hoped, but it was uncertain if it caused a total collapse.

Given that there were now three Husks clawing at him and his shields failing, the krogan had more pressing concerns. Pulling the Talon from his hip, Rykarn tried to make his way back to friendly lines, shooting one off of his lower torso, and smashing at the second with the butt of the pistol to hopefully cave its skull in. The friendly IFF markers were the only orientation he had making his way forward, and suddenly his armour shuttered; the shield capacitor gave out. The Husks had breached the barrier.

With urgent haste, Rykarn stopped moving to clear his body of the Husks, flailing against the damned things with all of his might, breaking bones and still dealing with their claws digging in between his joints, digging into his under suit. He managed to grab one by the leg, pulling it hard enough the leg came free but the Husk was still perched on him stubbornly. Still pulling his way towards his team like a stubborn quarterback in a Clawball game that refused to be tackled, the krogan smacked away oncoming Husks with the dismembered leg, needing to get to safety before he could deal with the damn things working their way through his armour.

"Bloody hell!" Salissa shouted, realizing that they were a mere moment away from this whole place being filled with dust from the crumbing tunnel. Also this explosion was surely going to be felt out in the settlement. Not the best way this could have went, but who could have thought CERBERUS HAD BLOODY SWARM OF HUSKS at ready underground!? The human soldier pulled herself away from her temporary krogan 'mount' and jumped on the ground, pulling and tearing a piece of her cloak, wrapping it around her mouth and nose. An improvised mask against the dust, not the best, but was better than nothing. Now there was a different problem though, their second krogan ally was stranded out there in the smoke and dust either crushed, but most likely alive and tryign to return to them, if the sounds were somethign to go by.

"..." She wanted to mutter something, but no words came out of her mouth as the omnishield deployed itself, releasing some light as it did, her flashlight on the rifle came to life as she charged into the dust, following the sound of husks and possible fighting. She'd rather die than leave him there stranded after her went alone to detonate the explosives! Instead with half closed yes and only a flashlight to lead her through the veil she pressed forward. This was going to be more of a melee fight than anything. At least her normal armor shields were still up and she had her omnishield also.

Running a silent prayer through her mind she shouted afterwards" RYKARN FOLLOW MY VOICEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! ALSO TALK TO ME!!!" She shouted, making it know she had also rushed towards him, wanting him to make noise so she can localize him better. Two of them would have better chance of pulling alive than him alone!

Well that didn't last long. Aegon thought back to his days with Blackwatch, fighting with hardened special forces operators and felt damn near nostalgic. If this was a Turian line, we'd have held until we were down to claws and talons, and then some. Tight quarters, mindless infantry, plentiful munitions; their line should not have broken so quickly but it had and now they were in close quarters combat with husks; which was incidentally the worst way to fight them. The length of time they could've held out was now drastically reduced as team members had to scrap hand to hand with an endless horde of enemies instead of holding them at long range. They weren't fighting as a team, covering each other with overlapping fields of fire, instead everyone was fighting in the kind of chaotic brawl that made Turian officers blanch in embarrassment. With some exceptions. The Geth continued to surprise him, with Phalanx thinning out some Husks that were in his proximity. That one was proving interesting indeed, the research boys in Synthetic Insights would have a field day with this AI behavior. After witnessing the near defeat of the Citadel at the hands of a Geth fleet, he never thought a Geth would be a trusted comrade, but there it was.

As he fired his Mattock down the tunnel, barely bothering to aim at the massed targets, Aegon saw several of the Cerberus scientists make a break for it and cursed. He drew his pistol while continually firing his rifle, trying to get a bead on one of the scientists while a Maruader and a pack of husks descended on him. He brought his weapon to bear on them and emptied his rifle clip one-handed, the Marauder diving out of the way while the bullets shredded half of the husks. He quickly turned, aimed, and fired off a single shot from his pistol, catching a scientist right in the knee and downing him while the others escaped. Aegon swiftly pulled his pistol back and shot a few more husks through the head, with the last three jumping at him simultaneously. Aegon knocked one out of the air with his rifle as he ducked and lashed out with a foot at another. The one hit by the rifle crumpled to the ground while the one he kicked flew back and the last sailed over his head. Still crouched low, he swept out with his other leg and sent it tumbling down to the dirt. Aegon would have stomped it's cybernetic brains in when the Marauder charged at him with it's claws out. The Spectre blocked the claws on his rifle and smacked the Marauder in the head with his pistol thrice in quick succession, the last swing sending the former Turian to the ground.

Aegon snapped in new Thermal clips and calmly shot all of the downed husks in the head, before burying his foot in the Marauder's synthetic skull. Noting the two remaining scientists and how close they were to being overrun Aegon commed Rol, "Rol exfil the scientists. If we lose all the intel, this was for nothing. Follow the main path and link up with reinforcements. Go." The scientists might be Cerberus, but their lives had value. If the whole team went down, as long as some intel got into Council hands, then they had not failed.

Everyone was being mobbed but Rykarn was taking it open himself to detonate the mines by shooting at them, without his express order, Aegon noticed. Before he could say anything, about half the mines were blown and huge waves of force, sound, and dust were thrown down the tunnel. Debris fell from the ceiling, which was quickly crumbling, but still not quite totally collapsed. The falling panels and supports struck Husks in the head while the explosions ripped them apart, creating a small and temporary barrier and giving the team breathing room from the oncoming horde, though many Husks still remained on their side of the tunnel. Luckily Aegon had his helmet on and was spared the dust. He turned on his thermal vision, spent his next round of rifle and pistol clips trying to thin the herd when the Husks on the other side of the tunnel started breaking through the debris; mindlessly clawing their way to the team. They needed a complete collapse to stop the horde cold. Aegon reloaded, saw Rykarn struggling his way through and cursed.

He turned on his speakers and ran to Rykarn, shooting at the Husks starting to break through the barrier of debris, "Rykarn, we're over here!" He couldn't risk hitting Rykarn in the middle of the press and ran at the Krogan, abandoning holding off the husks who were slowly but surely starting to pop out of the tunnel. They started to shoved the corpses and concrete blocks out of the way, moaning all the while as they clawed towards the team, the sheer weight of thousands of husks forcing its way through a middling pile of stone and composite metal. Aegon got out his omni-blades and started slashing and stabbing the Husks until the only ones left were him and Rykarn. Aegon was covered in synthetic gore and viscera and examined Rykarn. The krogan seemed ok, though a bit bloodied and Aegon turned up his speakers, "Everyone fall back! Find cover! Now!" Staying close to Rykarn, Aegon started back down the tunnel, slashing Husks on the way with his omni-blades as they ran to relative safety and the Husks on the other side had almost broken through.

He ran until he found a crate to cover behind. The first few husks had started to drag themselves into the tunnel and the pile of debris was quickly collapsing, Aegon shouted, "Giles! Now!" Aegon hunkered down and waited for the darkness and fury to envelop them all.

"Wait, that oversized turtle is not really going to,-"
...

*KABOOM!*

In one moment, Vella had been retreating backwards with the scientist when she had suddenly noticed the advancing Rykarn journeying headfirst into the circus of carnival horror creeps, gunning for the mines!
In the next moment; all but a blink; a wall of force and thick layer of dust would usher out throughout the entire battlefield from the entryway, hitting Vella like a storm and promptly knocking her on her butt before she could even open her mouth to protest!

The shimmering blue Tech Barriers surrounding her flickered as they absorbed whatever miscellaneous items were thrown around the room, the force of the cain mines capable of turning even a tooth sized reaper implant or small pebble into a deadly projectile versus unarmored flesh! As she fell backwards, her vision thrown up and around, Vella could see large chunks or rocks or pieces of reaper infected flesh flying through the air around her; before she promptly hit the ground!

"Owwwhh... "

Vella murmured as she lay on her back for a moment, just as a second chain explosion went off, though this one passed mostly harmlessly over her as she was already prone.

The blue holographic HUD from inside her helmet indicated that her Kinetic Shield and Tech barriers were still up, having mostly absorbed the dangerous shrapnel whilst letting parts of the shockwave pass through. Although nothing indicated any serious damage, the whole ordeal had nonetheless felt like receiving a hostile massage from an angry Elcor!

At least the landing had been soft...

Soft? Vella suddenly rolled onto one knee and got up, looking around to realize she had landed on the Cerberus scientist! The man in question, despite being unarmored and unshielded, looked relatively intact despite the close proximity to the detonation of multiple cain units!
That was, his body looked mostly intact at least. The man's eyes were wide open and glazed over as he stared directly up into the air with a slack jaw and dumb look on his face, occasionally tilting his head around to gaze about in confusion.

On second note, he may have lost his hearing. And may also be shell-shocked?

"You'll be fine!"

Vella gave the scientist a pat on his shoulder, before getting up and slotting a new Thermal clip into her Apostle Assault Rifle as she surveyed the scene.

What had been the legion of the damned that had been pouring out of the entryway had been mostly reduced to a sea of reaper-blue gore splattered randomly across what little parts of the room was visible through the damnable smoke! Thankfully, her hearing had been protected by the audio-regulators in her helmet, so she could still hear; occasional howls and growls from somewhere deep within the mist, but also:

"RYKARN"

She recognized Salissa's voice, and was surprised to hear there was a tone of; concern in it?
From all she had seen of the human so far, nothing would indicate Salissa being an empathic individual. If she was concerned, then there was serious trouble afoot!

Stepping forward and following the sound of the voice, she advanced through the thick dust with rapid steps, passing through rubble, debris and broken reaper bodies. A husk could be seen staggering through the dust, only to be promptly executed by Vella as she passed by it, using her biotics to twist its neck around and blow it back into one of the nearby rocks!

Emerging from the thick layer of dust like a ghost, the gleam of her silver armor and blue lights of her Tech Armor giving her a phantom look, she would come across a lumbering creature stepping through the ruined battlefield; a scarred and beaten Rykarn that was currently being murder-jockeyed by a couple of dessicated husks!
Fortunately however, Aegon was already there, slashing away at the husks with his omni-blades at an alarming efficiency and fervor, quickly cleaning the Krogan of the murderous dead!

Vella joined in without hesitation, firing two rapid shots in two silver streaks that cut down two advancing husks from behind them, before a shimmering blue aura appeared around the Asari as she used her biotics to grab the head of a third husk; squeezing it in and causing it to cave-in on itself in a sickening wet squelching noise, continuing by forcing the ruined reaper head downwards and burying the mangled remnants of its head inside its own torso before flinging it aside!

"That was stupid!"

Vella exclaimed as she took her attention away from the husks to rush towards the duo of Aegon and Rykarn, taking position with them as she accompanied them back towards friendly cover. However, her voice would betray a tone of enthusiasm even through her solid silver plated helmet as she spared a quick glance at Rykarn!

"You should totally teach me sometime!"

(A collab by myself and Deos Morran!)

The husk launched himself towards Ethan's face, its fingers closing around his neck as the force of the jump knocked the biotic over, the husk pushing down on his windpipe. Instead of fear, Ethan's face showed a mixture of surprise and mild annoyance as he croaked for breath, before a push field launched the husk upwards, to land on a pile of rubble a few metres to his left. The biotic got to his feet, recovering the Paladin he dropped before walking up to the still alive husk, grabbing it by the throat, and smashing its head against the wall until there wasn't very much left of it.

"Pathetic."

He looked up, listening out for the sounds of gunfire that he had follow...well, ditched the team for. He didn't need them anyway. They were there to support him, and he did not need that. I mean, the husk had got lucky, but he had killed it anyway! Looking around for any other hostiles and finding that it was the only one. The floor was covered in corpses of husks, cannibals, a few marauders and a ravager. He didn't even remember killing the last one. Maybe it was the others.

He pulled himself up some rubble, wincing as a shard of glass sent a trickle of blood down his arm before pulling himself over, almost losing his balance and impaling himself on a length of steel rebar before he managed to land on his feet, panting slightly.

God, he was out of shape. Since Benning, he hadn't been in any direct combat situations, just tossing warp fields at targets. Why the fuck couldn't they build target ranges that could safely contain flares? Were all biotics in the damned galaxy so pathetic? What was wrong with a simple explosion rather than all that lifting around like a dainty butterfly stuff? You didnt see guns that lifted people around! Well, from a certain point of view.

He kept low, making sure there were no more husks around. The gunfire was getting closer, and he could hear something else as well. He smiled. A proper fight wasn't far awa...

He heard an almighty roar run through the tunnels, popping his eardrums and making him double over in pain. It took him half a second to realize it was an explosion, and broke into a run, heading for his target. Hopefully it was his...whatever they were, and not cerberus. Then again, if it was, he would finally get to fight something that...bled. Husks just shattered like glass, a pile of husk corpses could probably be cleaned up by a vacuum cleaner. Or something.

Finally, he got to the clearing, charging a flare and...being disappointed. The people he was looking for were there, but most of the enemy had been wiped out and to be honest, that was the thing he was looking foward to most. He would rather destroy an army of husks than talk to people. Plus, he didn't know these people.
He sighed, and loosed the flare, sailing up into the air and shooting down into a group of survivors, exploding with enough force to launch one of the husks towards the other Spectres, with one of them landing unceremoniously a meter away from one of them. Ethan couldn't help but smirk as he saw that happen, and proceeded to walk towards the group like he was on a casual stroll, only stopping to make sure he wasn't stepping in any corpses.

"...Hello. I really hope you are the people i am supposed to meet."

Alria watched and as she was taking heads and depressing the trigger of her pistol and sending shot after shot into the horde of Reapers and trying to find her solace in it. Though it did not come she still continued to thin their numbers and assist her team in keeping the beasts at bay.

Though through her shots and focus on her foes she watched as once again, another one of her teammates charged into the fray and put their lives in grave danger for some reason or another and this one seemed to have no reason but to just shoot at their foes from a ridiculously unsafe angle. However, as he switched weapons to more... explosive options, she watched and saw his line of aiming and before long found his method of reasoning. He was trying to trigger the bombs! Seeing this and despite her trance of revenge she knew what was about to come and in turn she ducked low behind the rubble that she called cover in the hopes of avoiding the blast.

It wasn't too much longer after that that the sudden thud and wooshing of air washed over her hidden space to show that the Krogan's shooting had it's desired effect and the mines had gone off. So to avoid any secondary blasts she kept her head down for a few more moments but finally peeking up and aiming with her pistol down the way to scan for any surviving hostiles. Seeing nothing but dust she knew that she'd need a tactical advantage. Pressing a button on her helmet she started to scan for bioelectric signals often put out by energy sources, power armor, and of course men turned machines. Seeing a few signal sources and identifying them as Reapers she pressed her trigger and send several shots flying at them.

That was when a sudden surge of power flew past her and shook the tunnel with a biotic surge. This of course was not ok in Alria's bookas and her attention was quickly turned to the potential source of the attack. This meant her gun was as well, pointing it directly at the newcomer as she traced back the attack from it's path. Of course this person was walking towards her and before he was able to get too close she heard his voice. In response she said, "Get your head down and watch your fire. We have friendlies present in the area. Her pistol staying on him for a bit more before she lowered it. While she didn't recognize this man, he did fire on Husks and didn't look like a Reaper which most likely meant he was just another member of this crack team. Regardless, his actions could have caused friendly fire... but didn't. So she couldn't be mad at him.

"Keep pointing that gun and me and i'll shove it down your throat."
...is what Ethan would have said, if he wasn't 90% sure that this Turian was on his side. Plus, he was in a good mood. A really good mood. Finally, he had gotten the fight he had been hoping for, for the last few years, and he had finally found the people he was looking for. Today had been nothing but good things happening, the worst being that lucky husk from earlier. Still, that thing was in pieces, and he had moved on from it. He decided not to mention getting knocked over.

He looked at the Turian , noting the armor and goggles and racking his brain to try and remember who it was. He had read the briefing on who he was meant to be working with, but all that went out the window as soon as he saw the first husk of the day. From then on, it had just been various forms of slaughter.
"Nice to meet you too..." He paused. "...erm...You. Turian."
He shook his head, hoping that she would say her name for him.
"And i'm sure the friendlies have their own shields. I didnt aim anywhere near them."
He paused again.
"...did i?"

Alria took a moment to address him and his words but at the end of the day it didn't matter, and technically he didn't fire into allies, just by them and 'by' was up to interpretation as they were out of the blast radius. "It doesn't matter. You didn't hit anyone. Just take cover and return fire." She said fiercely, though it wasn't particularly towards him and instead more or less just at the situation. She hated the Reapers and with only part of the mines going of this task wasn't done.

Turning away from the newcomer and assuming he'd help out in dealing with the issue at hand. Taking aim with her pistol again she kept an eye out for any Reaper signatures and made sure to throw fire and lead at them as she found and confirmed them.

Ethan looked at her if she was insane for a moment, before shrugging and launching a singularity over into a mixture of husks and cannibals, they floated for a moment, before his warp field blew them to pieces, scattering them a good distance around. He would have used flares, but he didn't want to tire himself. He wasnt quite at the high point where he would stop caring about that.

"So..." He said, letting the sentence hang as he remembered what his commanding officers had always told him.
"...you are a Turian. Shot anything interesting today?"

ALria was focused on the fight ahead throwing more attacks into the fray as she could, but that didn't mean she wasn't listening to this new guy and as he talked she really just wanted to hit him. He wasn't taking cover, he was fighting the Husks, but he was also trying to make idle chatter about killing. Where was the tact and the concept of taking the mission serious?

She wanted to shake her head and scold him, but really the mission was more important than a human making smart ass remarks. She wasn't going to even say anything to him until she heard Aegon yell out for the Drell to 'do it' which could only mean one thing. "Get down now!" She called out to him before doing the same for herself.

Ethan's eyes narrowed slightly. She didn't answer him, which he found to be slightly rude Weren't Turians warriors and all? Conversation about destroying things would go well, at least in his head. It made no sense. He sighed, and launched another flare, and another group of husks were obliterated, several of their corpses smashing into other, still living husks.

"I thought you would enjoy shooting things, considering..." he said, before the turian suddenly yelled. He didn't want to get down, but there was an urgency in her voice he hadn't heard before, and he found himself complying.
"There better be a good reason for..."

Sicaria Velinian

The temporary wall that was Salissa inevitably gave way, and Sicaria had taken what time they had been given to scrounge up some thermal clips for her shotgun and rifle and reload both of them. She fell back to Aegon's side and started to overlap fire with him when the horde broke loose, covering as much of the crowd as she physically could with her Phaeston. Between the two of them, they were able to keep the vast majority of husks at at least arm's length, though the non-Turians of the squad apparently had no idea what a line was, never mind how to hold one. The two Krogan looked to be holding their own despite this, though things changed quickly when the younger of the pair charged in and shot out the mines, forcing an early detonation.

The ground shook with their destructive force as suffocating dust and dirt filled the air, concrete and brick from centuries ago finally succumbing to a certain Drell's explosives. Sicaria, unfortunate enough to have left her helmet with her girlfriend for the night, caught several lungfuls of grime before her body reacted, and she started hacking up what must've been some kind of hairball by the sound of it. She would've considered it something comical if it weren't for the husks bearing down on the team, which forced her body into something similar to an adrenaline rush. Her thoughts were cut off and she found herself automatically moving into cover, a scientist in her grip while she went. She didn't even know where this one had come from, but all that mattered was that she had a worthless life to protect because of the information it possessed. In this blur, the Turian shoved the Human behind a damaged wall one of the Krogan had probably broken down earlier and leaned on it, vision fading as the dust kept trying to replace oxygen in her body. Unless she found some kind of apparatus soon, she would pass out.

Her salvation came in the scientist's coat, which in her adrenaline-fueled thoughts, would do the job well enough. Through a series of wordless commands and manhandling, she took the piece of clothing and cut it down the middle with an Omni-Blade before tying one of the halves around her head. The other half was presumably taken by a now half-naked biologist for a similar use, though as far as the Turian was concerned, she could breathe again and there was a small moment of peace. Ready for more, she got up from her seated position against the aforementioned wall and raised her Phaeston once again, trying to pick out her foes from little besides glowing, cybernetic eyes and firing singular shots at every pair she saw get close. To her, it was becoming increasingly clear that this horde would keep coming, so she did something an captain would be appalled by: She targeted a blind area somewhere near the original chokepoint and fired off a Cryo Blast straight for it, hoping to freeze enough husks to cause some level of significant backup right where the mines would be going off soon.

"Whoever can detonate those mines some more, do it and let's get outta here!" In case Aegon hadn't been clear, there it was again in the somewhat more pleasant voice of a female Turian.

Ellis' fortified and Pylon reinforced barrier made him almost invulnerable to the barehanded husks' onslaught, so long as he stayed within range. His Mattock was empty, so he swung it like a club, beating off hands as they grasped at the seams in his armor. The dust obscured everything.

His comms were damaged, and gave some noisy, crackling feedback as Sicaria again, stated the urgency of the situation.

Yes. The other mines. Likely, we've just made a tighter tunnel.

"NERO, what can you see?" A tiny loading circle appeared in the corner of Ellis' visor, spinning for only a moment before NERO responded, while Ellis wrestled a husk into a headlock, before squeezing it open like a pistachio.

"Ally Krogan returned safely. New Ally Human present. Allied casualties remain zero."

"Can you mark the mines? At least mark all electronic signatures in the-"
The entire tunnel lit up, each one of the husks' EM frequencies flooding Ellis' sensors. "NO, NO, no, don't mark Reaper tech." The room dimmed, now the only illuminated objects were a number of small circular devices, a number of boxes, no doubt generators, and a lot of light on the other side, where the infiltration team had penetrated.

Ellis targeted the highest concentration of them, hoping they would chain-react. He groaned. This was going to, frankly, blow.

"Eject the thermal clip in my left leg." The slot popped open, kicking the little red cylinder into the dirt. Ellis knelt, using his Mattock as a crutch, now one-legged as well as one-armed, to lift it up to reload. He thanked whatever God was up there that his leg had locked straight, and he was able to stand on it.

He lined up the shot, allowing NERO to assist as much as possible. He had enough juice for six rounds. Six rounds, one mine, through smoke and dust and who knows what else. "NERO, Cryo Ammo still good?"

Wonder how he got them on the ceiling-

"Verified."

"Then deactivate it."

"Affirmative."

Here goes nothing.

Ellis deactivated the safety, and gave it everything he had left.

CRACKCRACKCRACKCRACKCRACKCRACK!

The bullets hit home, but home was not the Cain mines, as Ellis had believed. Instead, Ellis' ammo thundered against the lighting fixtures in the ceiling. Five out of six rounds clattered against empty stone and rusted supports.

One hit the fire suppression system, long out of use, but still connected, and the rain began filtering out the dust from the air.

Did it look like I did that on purpose?

You idiot, no one can see you.

Everything went to shit in a hand basket pretty goddamned quickly.
This operation wasn't what one would call smooth, it had been sloppy and the fact that they had not encountered a single casualty was a bloody miracle, well it seemed that way.
Giles was keeping an eye on what was occurring below, he hadn't gotten clear fully as of yet he needed a good visual on when to detonate the mines, that time was drawing nearer and nearer now though, Salissa's shield generator finally gave in from the onslaught it had endured, in theory that should have been her overwhelmed and killed in mere moments, however there was a reason why they were all picked by Spectres; they were no ordinary soldiers.
Salissa managed to escape relatively unharmed thanks to the Krogan whom had just beat his way through the ensuing horde that followed her, truly there were some headstrong glory seekers here, or maybe it was just a Krogan being a typical Krogan, losing himself in bloodlust and rage, apparently it was not an easy thing to control, assuming you actually wanted to control it.

As he watched Giles was performing a few potshots here and there, firing into the general vicinity of the horde, his main focus was the comms for when the call for detonation went out.
It quickly became evident what the Krogan was planning though, he was going to shoot the mines, Giles' eyes widened with disbelief, that would likely fracture the explosion, nullifying the purpose of why they were placed - the order they were placed in was to ensure maximum structural damage, so that all of it would collapse and crush the horde, the Krogan was literally mowing his way through the synthetic creatures in order to do it.
"You fool! N..." By the time Giles shouted it was already too late the detonation occurred drowning out his words and indeed everything else in the tunnel.
The chain reaction of the cain mines sent massive ripples of kinetic force outwards through out the tunnel, knocking Giles off his feet and pushing him back a few feet, Cain mines didn't get their namesake for nothing, each one of them packed a significant punch a simultaneous detonation of them only amplifies this.
Each of the further detonations being signified by a pulse, it sent a wave of dust through the old tunnels and blasted past them all like a sandstorm, pieces of debris flew through it at high speeds and caused his kinetic barriers to ripple every time one hit; it being the only thing stopping them from slicing him to ribbons as well as the rest of the team.

Giles tried to compose himself but he was blinded by the thick dust that clouded the battlefield, each haggard breath he took burnt his lungs and airways, causing him to cough violently; his rebreather was in his satchel that now lied somewhere in the thick soup-like mist, every sound was dampened, he seen the flashes of gunfire and flashlights pierce through the darkness, the fighting sounded as if it were happening from miles away, and yet he knew only a few steps would take him to that fight.
Then the order came through the comms unit "Giles! Now!"

As he suspected, not all of the mines went off... "Goddamned Krogan, leave the bloody explosives work to the expert..."
The air began to clear a bit when the sprinkler system went off, ancient yet still operational - as the musk began to clear Giles spat out phlegmy mixture of dust covered blood that made him question just how much shit was now in his respiratory system.
He didn't wait on ceremony however, not even to find his satchel - if those husks got out of the tunnel it was game over.
Inputting the command into his omni-tool Giles took a deep breath through the nose and prepared for the second wave of dust.

A small flash of red light could be seen illuminate out of the crumbling debris, the mines activated and then nought but a second later detonated.
Because the detonation of the mines was staggered and in two phases, the cloud of debris and dust this time was far more lethal, it flung pieces of rock and metal out the size of small boulders, some weighing anywhere from 1kg to 50kg and flying at fast speeds, anyone not in cover would be lucky to come out with nothing more than some broken limbs, something Giles had forgot to anticipate - when his barriers went off from a lucky miss, that would have removed his left arm he got down from his very disadvantageous position, rolling into a piece of small cover.
Everywhere on his body hurt, his clothing was covered in a coat of dust and in places had been eviscerated by shards of debris, cutting into his flesh and leaving behind a pock mark of green blood that oozed out in pulses; he wasn't aware if the second detonation had been a success but he could barely think straight at the moment, his wounds were quite severe, and the small bedrock of debris that had began to cover him didn't help.

After spitting another congealment of phlegm and blood out of his throat he spoke into the comms " A little help here..."
Not... a good start in terms of a mission Giles had concluded, he felt like shit and if he survived he would drink himself to sleep tonight. His situation was not helped by the fact that he could do little more than feebly push some bits of rock and chunks of synthetic body parts of himself whilst he waited for someone to help him.
This was compounded even further when he seen the glowing blue lifeless eyes of husk crawl around the cover he had used earlier; it appeared to be missing an arm and its legs, but it wasn't going to stop there.

"You're. Fucking. Kidding. Me!" With his free foot Gilvert kicked the at the Husks head, every time he did a spike of pain shot through his body, but was he hell being chomped on or something by this shit. The husk didn't like the fact that it just got a boot to its head and screamed hollowly before shifting a bit closer, timing the momentum of its shuffle and his kick the next one gave a satisfying crack as its neck went.

A sigh of relief escaped Giles' lungs, followed by another cough as he relaxed under his bed of rubble.
"Fuck, I thought the godsdamned Reaper war was a struggle, I'm never coming back to this planet after this..."

A veritable avatar of War, Skarr was lost in the combat around him. Of course he was not in the bloodrage, but what he'd refer to as the 'Battle Focus.' Where every breath, every movement, every intuition and thought was used to kill and keep himself from meeting the same fate. Salissa had left his shoulders, mines were falling around him, and his armored form was already covered in debris from the initial explosion to the main breach. But he paid no attention to it. The Krogan held the line, and drew the attention of any husk that dared face him.

He sidestepped a Husk, using the momentum of the step to enhance a quick backhanded jab with his massive fist. It punched into the husk like a shotgun shell, sending it broken and onto the floor. He'd already slammed into three more before it hit the ground. A well timed head bash, followed by a knee and an overheaded two fist strike that crumpled a Marauder. His fist shot out to grab a Husk by the waist, and he crushed it with a growl. Bullets ricocheted and pierced his armor, and claws scraped across it as well. But he'd been hurt worse.
He'd always had worse.

With a roar, he tore through two more Husks to reveal himself standing before what at first appeared to be a boulder. It was the smallest animation from the object that sent recognition and warning signals through Skarr's mind. Brute.

He backpedaled immediately, unholstering his Claymore Shotgun. Carnage enveloped him, and he unloaded a powerful shell into the thing's abdomen. It ripped a chunk of its armor off, and the Brute let out a terrifying cry. Skarr unloaded his clip of shells into the Brute as it reared up, and began to charge. He was punching into it with his shells, but despite the damage, it wasn't going down.

Skarr rolled to the side just in time, though his lower half was clipped by the monstrous charge. It sent him skidding in an unfamiliar spin onto the ground, hard. He gave an animalistic growl as he pushed to his feet as soon as he could. The Brute spun, to receive a fragmentation grenade at its own feet. Three beeps and an explosion filled it with shrapnel. It roared in frustration, and Skarr charged the beast with his Biotic Hammer, weapon raised.

There was a terrifying shattering noise as the Brute attempted to shield its head with its damaged arm. The Hammer tore through it, and the second blow caved in the Brute's Turian-like head. Skarr continued to bash into it until he knew it was no more. For what it was worth, he was glad he had joined this group. He had thought Brutes would no longer appear in the galaxy. The thrill of fighting one...

He placed a bruised and bloody hand to his forehead, calming himself down with a few labored breaths. The temporary lull in the combat helped draw his attention to the latest explosion to his left. He turned his massive head, and past the smoke and debris he saw a crawling, half-alive husk pull its way inside.

"Hmmmr?"

Skarr made his way over to the collapsed mine, seeing the fair sized and shallow hole in it. The muttering from within sounded familiar from the original briefing the companions had earlier. He peeked in, to reveal the Drell whose name he never caught kicking the Husk until its neck snapped. Placing the head of his hammer onto the small wall, he yanked and it collapsed. He reached in with an arm to offer a hand. "I don't think I've ever kicked a Husk to death." He said. "Not bad."

🇪🇦🇷🇹🇭, 🇸🇴🇱🇦🇷 🇸🇾🇸🇹🇪🇲

The fighting was getting more intense and dangerous as the waves of husks kept on coming. Rol'Naaris kept firing his sniper rifle towards them and realized that half of the room was already covered in blood and bodies. He followed Sicaria towards the others and saw that everyone was trying to hold the position. Rol'Naaris had to help them out and hold down the area before the husk could do some serious damage. His sniper rifle was still ready for firing while the tunnel was filled with an explosion. He ducked into cover as the explosion filled the tunnel; however, it did not completely collapse the tunnel. Now, Rykarn was going to bait for several husk to notice and Rol'Naaris had to do something.

He opened fire at three of the husk that were heading for Rykarn, but he had to reload. That was when he got a new order from Aegon: evacuate the two remaining scientists out of the area. He did not want to leave while the fighting was getting more intense. He would rather die fighting with them than live with the guilt of leaving behind his teammates to die. Rol'Naaris wanted to stay and fight, but he had an order to follow and he did. He fired a few more shots at the husk that went after and Rykarn before running towards the remaining scientists. The two scientists look up and saw the quarian, realizing that they were finally leaving this hellhole.

"Alright, listen to me closely." Rol'Naaris said seriously, "I am going to get you two out of here for your own safety. Stay near me and do not try anything stupid."

The scientists nodded as he got up and started to walk towards the only exit. Rol'Naaris soon followed and quickly passed the pair to make sure that everything was safe. The fighting was getting indistinct as the scientists and the quarian kept on walking forward. Then, they saw several dead troopers that caused the scientists to cover their eyes. One of them even started to cry as the other one was hugging the crying human. The room looked like a fighting cage with blood all over the ground and weapons covered in blood as well. Who could of done this? One of the scientists, a woman, looked at Rol'Naaris and asked "What about the others?"

She sounded worried about her former co-workers and looked at the dead bodies to see if one of them was a scientist. Rol'Naaris looked at the only way out of the room and answered her question, "If they were smart enough to not get lost, then they are probably with reinforcement. In short, your friends are safe."

Then, the group was silent for the remaining walk towards the entrance. He was thinking of how much the woman cared for her colleagues. It was sort of odd to see someone working for Cerberus to have emotions. The Reaper War was what destroyed Cerberus and all of their horrible stories were finally exposed. Personally, Rol'Naaris had never fought Cerberus until now. In fact, he has not met anyone that worked for Cerberus until this mission began. But, he still hoped that the scientist would have a trial and find them guilty. His train of thought stopped as soon they arrived outside to see the other scientists and the reinforcements. He also discovered that Tiberius and Rayes were standing outside as well. The groups were finally reunited and his order was complete.

He looked at Tiberius' wounds and thought of the bodies from earlier. He put the pieces together and asked, "I am guessing that you were fighting the troopers? Am I right or did you just trip over a rock instead?"

"RYKARN, FOLLOW MY VOICE! ALSO, TALK TO ME!"

"Rykarn, we're over here!"

Like a decidedly fatalistic game of Marco Polo, the intermittent flickering of the IFF signals and volumetric dust played hell with visual contact, leading Rykarn towards the sounds of Salissa and Partinaxs’ voices on one end and the unintelligible utterances of the Husks behind him. Everything bloody well ached, between the concussive forces of the blast and the countless dozens of claws that had tried to pry through his now battered armour, the krogan was rather looking forward to sitting down and drinking when this was all over.

After fending off a few more Husks with ferocious backhands and liberal use of his shotgun, the krogan soon heard the staccato of gunfire and the flashing of omni-blades through the dust, his comrades having reached him. At least they’d stayed the hell back when he set off the charges; it would be clean-up duty and containing what was left. When he caught sight of the cybernetic woman, Rykarn shook his head.

”You’re louder than the explosion, but thanks. Didn’t want to walk back alone with an entourage of monsters.” he watched as the turian Specter cut down yet another Husk with an incandescent orange blade. He looked about as good as Rykarn felt, he decided. With the krogan secure, Partinax ordered a retreat back to the line. Looking the Spectre over and offering an agreeable nod, he made an understated observation.

”You look like shit.” Rykarn said, his helmet concealing his grin. He followed Partinax back towards the firing line, turning on occasion to take a few more shots at trailing Husks, the shotgun doing gruesome work against the unarmoured Husks. Vella had apparently joined the rescue effort, and Rykarn was surprised to find that she didn’t show up on his HUD. His omnitool must have taken a hit.

"That was stupid!" The asari exclaimed. It was something Rykarn was far too accustomed to hearing from just about every outfit he’d worked for, save for the Blood Pack. Turns out when you get a bunch of krogan leading a bunch of vorcha and don’t give a shit about collateral damage, you get used to doing things that make even turians have second thoughts. Krogan were nothing if not pragmatic; if it fixes your problem but kills a bunch of your enemy, then it would be stupider not to do it. It`s not like he was on the bill for fixing the damn metro.

What Rykarn wasn`t ready for was the asari`s follow-up statement.

"You should totally teach me sometime!" she exclaimed, perhaps far too cheerfully.

The krogan grunted, tossing a grenade behind him. It detonated, silencing several shrieking vocals behind the group.

”Spend your next leave on Tuchanka and pick a fight with everyone you see. You’ll learn fast enough.” he said, continuing his stride back towards the others. Back in formation, it was a lot easier to stand their ground now that the source of Husks was restricted. There were still more than anyone could count and the dust destroyed line of sight, but it was starting to feel more like a fight they might win. His commander might give him crap for breaking the line, but he wasn’t about to make excuses. London wasn’t currently being overrun by Husks and they weren’t all torn into hundreds of bloody ribbons. End of the day, that’s what bloody mattered.

Ashes to ashes...

The tunnel blew with deafening force, the shock-force-typhoon throwing Ellis on his back like a beetle. His stiff knee came loose, servos shattering, flinging bits of ceramic like a little handleg grenade.

Dust to dust.

Husk parts, shrapnel, and debris whirled across the blast site like missiles. Clouds of dust, staved off by the still-spewing sprinklers, threatened to retake the battlefield.

"NERO! Status report!"

"Zero casualties, operative. Enemy combatants effectively neutralized. Recommend Standard Sanitation Protocol and Purge."

Ellis quit struggling, and simply lay there. The ceiling spun before his eyes and his stomach churned. Weakness beset him. He fought, to render the willpower necessary for his biotics. His face sweated profusely, stinging his pseudoskin. He closed his eyes.

He focused first on his body, the brunt of his weight.

He grew lighter, and lighter.

Then on his arms, the counterweight.

He felt himself rising.

Now to stiffen his legs, the fulcrum.

When he reopened his eyes, he was back on his feet, feeling ten pounds heavier and a hundred years older. The Mattock still hung from his good hand. His brain ached, a throbbing tumor in his skull, bursting at the seams like an overfilled balloon. He marched.

His already dented knee thudded and crackled as a mass effect field gripped it tightly, holding it together like a cast. Occasionally, Ellis stumbled, his focus wavering or a particularly painful headthrob distracting him from the task at hand, or at foot.

Footsteps! On your left!

Ellis' knee gave out as he broke concentration and dropped his Mattock, arm lashing out at great speed, Throwing a husk far into the dust cloud, to an unknown fate. Ellis toppled to the ground, a veritable mass of metal, and for the first time in his life, called for help.

"Squad... Squad comm: Agent down! Requesting pickup."

That's right. Scream for rescue.

"I'm crippled. Need... Support..."

Yes... Despair.

He coughed, specks of blood and black slime coating the inside of his visor, the internal VI making sure to clean it up quickly, medical suite working overtime. Painkillers did their job, and Ellis' vision swam.

He focused on consciousness, on his breathing. His shallow, ragged breathing.

”Spend your next leave on Tuchanka and pick a fight with everyone you see. You’ll learn fast enough.”

"Tried it once; didn't like the drinks!"

Vella responded with a light chuckle as she followed the small squad now guarding the battered Krogan back into the friendly firing line. As they reached the relative shelter of the cover, Vella would give Rykarn a quick pat on the back; which she wasn't even sure if he could feel given his excessive armor, natural armor and the limited field of vision that came from being a hunch-back-tank; and promptly turned around.

"It seems the nachspiel is on. You stay put, we'll clear this b-grade zombie apocalypse out!"

And with that, Vella had already rushed towards the front of the firing line; her Apostle battle rifle instantly lined up and ready, before she fired off a glimmering, crystal clear beam of light that turned an oncoming husk's shoulder to ash; before Vella promptly corrected her aim and proceeded to vaporize its chest!

"Now I'm getting sloppy!"

She quietly admonished herself as she kept on firing, rapidly acquiring new targets, eliminating them and already moving on to the next ones! She could feel how the insides of her suit felt like a wet jungle, full of sweat, yet it only made her remember one of the earliest lessons she learnt during her training more than a hundred years ago:

The more you sweat, the less you bleed!

She whipped off another shot. Then another shot. It was then that she began to realize that the number of incoming husks was becoming dramatically smaller.
It was... puzzling, to not have one of those ghostly, blue eyed corpses bearing down on you for every second; like it had been mere seconds ago. But in hindsight, when you had a full firing line of professional killers, hired guns, spectres, elite soldiers and psychos; all armed to the teeth; firing continuously at the no more than a hundred husks that had been still standing outside when the entrance had been collapsed, it made sense that they would soon run out of fodder!

Yet her thoughts of this becoming too easy would suddenly be interrupted as she moved to the left of the line, and suddenly saw:

"What? ... not again!"

"I'm crippled. Need... Support..."

She immediately recognized the mangled but still unmistakable heap of battered metal lying a few meters away from the line that was Ellis, unmoving!
Most of the husks seemed too focused on the firing line gunning them down to notice the heavily-canned meal lying next to them as they all ran past him; that was, all with the exception of the bulbous, grotesque mass of a reaper Cannibal unit emerging from the dust behind Ellis, surrounded with a black, chitinous armor covering its mass of dead flesh and reaper implants, and with five glowing, ghastly eyes now eyeing the defenseless Ellis with morbid interest!

In an instant, memories flashed through Vella's mind! Memories of a demolished alley in rain and darkness, a half toppled giant silver tower above; red flashes of weapons fire across the murky field; the same five glowing eyes; and a scream:

"Calisto!"

After what had felt like a whole eternity, yet in truth been nothing more than the blink of an eye; Vella's eyes finally opened again, a tint of black receding from them as she first focused on Ellis, then the Cannibal...

" ... oh NO YOU DON'T!"

In a sudden rush of speed, she leaped out of her cover, charging across the field with rifle held high as she almost instantly put down another two husks as she closed in rapidly on the Cannibal! As the grotesque techno-monstrosity loomed over the broken pile that was Ellis, it looked up, recognizing the charging figure as Vella fired three more shots aimed straight at it!

The first silver beam hit its chitinous shell, crumbling a small section of it but failing to penetrate. Another one hit another layer of chitinous armor, disintegrating it but barely burning the dark, fleshy mass behind. The third shot hit its fourth eye, destroying it and leaving a large hole in its head; but it simply reeled back, the Cannibal still standing as readied a pair of clawed hands, its glowing maw opening wide as it let out an echoing wheezing laughter!

Before she could fire another shot, her weapon let out a familiar yet very accursed beep; signaling that it had overheated!

With her weapon currently out, Vella simply slung it aside, and instead reached out with her arm; charging forward with a furious scream! The cannibal lunged forward with its vicious claws, unphased by the incoming attacker, until the familiar blue, biotic light surrounded Vella's fist as she brought it straight into the Cannibal's numerous eyes! With pure hate and rage fueling right into her biotics, the punch was powerful enough to bury the cannibal's head right back into its own body, before tearing its entire upper torso in two in an abominable shower of gore as the remains of the Cannibal was blown back into the ruins of the entrance with the force of a cannonball!

Vella stood there for a moment, panting behind her helmet as her eyes scanned for any other hostiles; though found most of the husks either already dead or being in the process of being shot to pieces.

For a moment, she looked at Ellis, moving as if a different spirit had taken over her body altogether!
That was, until she shook her head and let out a tired laugh, seeming to suddenly return back to normal as she activated her omni-tool.

"I'm worried this will become a habit, Ellis."

She said with a smirk, beginning to run a debug on Ellis's suit's systems. Though after a quick glance at the feedback, she suddenly hesitated, before activating her squad-comms.

"Uhh... how long for a med-evac?"

The situation was stable for now at least. Salissa quickly meet up with Rykarn through the smoke and soon their resident turian specter also came, slashing husks on the way to and from. It was fine. The human herself quickly got to work on the husks that were there. Their mechanical carcasses were rather well suited for punching bags! She used her omni shield in a manner similar to how Aegon was using his blades. Granted there was a distinct difference in a fighting methods consisting of shields than to swords. For one the shield was heavily blunt weapon. With each swing and bash on their way away from the collapse, crunching and cracking sounds could be heard from each of her targets.

Suddenly as they had gotten nearly back to the firing line, she heard the turian shout something about the drell to do and having no other choices in the matter, she rapidly jumped to the closes cover that wasn't really even complete cover, just a tipped off rock that didn't cover her completely, luckily her omni shield was providing the rest of the protection.

The rest of the mines detonated in force. The chucks of concrete were thrown everywhere as if fired from cannons. Salissa could hear them impact in the rock she took partial cover behind and into her omni shield. The chucks of concrete shattered into pieces mostly, but not without cracks forming into the outer layers of her omni shield. Outer layers and also even the middle layers! Seems the earlier escapades had weakened it. Now that she ran a moment of thought, she did remember it's been a good while since she had the time to take care of her equipment properly. There always seemed to be something to do, orders to complete from the alliance that she barely had time left! She just hoped the shield would hold for the moment.

As the flying concrete pieces were settling down, one of the last that impacted her shield broke off a piece off from the top of it. A shard then flew past her face, scratching into the energy barrier field created by her armor. No damage done overall, but it sure was taxing on the armor's energy.

Finally the flying shrapnels were over so she jumped to her legs, only to see Giles more or less burried and Ellis being saved by Vella moments later. All was fine, but the drell didn't look in too great of a shape. Salissa saw that the other krogan, Skarr was already by the drell with the possible intend of helping.

“He'd need more than just a hand in this...” Salissa stated, her omni shield vanishing as she almost slid on the ground to her knees.” Hold it there, this's gona hurt, but can't administer any medigel with you under the rubble...” She stated, yanking the drell by the collar, before with her order hand beginning to administer the healing substance to his wounds with utmost haste.” Next time check your shields...” She stated.

“You think this is bad?” She asked with a smirk, her medigel wasn't the specialized kind that had great absorption rates specially for aquatic species, but it would do in the pinch their situation was.” You should have seen this place while the reapers were here! But damn it it wasn't also strangely fun.”

Staff Lieutenant Jake Anderson

Only now that his desperate rush through the Cerberus compound had come to a close, did Anderson realise how severe a toll it had taken on his body. He bled from a dozen wounds where jagged teeth and broken nails had managed to prize into the vulnerable gaps between the plating of his armour, the flexible bodysuit underneath providing sparse defence against such determined and single-minded foes. His whole body ached, pains both sharp and dull reverberating through his form, conspiring to remind him of just how stupid he had been, how close he had come to getting himself killed.

The worst of the agonies came from his inner-right thigh, where he was sporting a particularly gruesome looking laceration. Through some miracle the major arteries had been left undamaged, and while the wound bled – and obviously had been bleeding for some time - profusely, it didn’t spill out in a pumping rush like it would have had it been a death wound. Still, it was in dire need of treatment, and seeing as Katabasis lacked a dedicated medic – a tactical oversight on his and Aegon’s part – he was going to have to see to it himself.

He half-ran, half-limped his way in behind some cover, hoping that the rest of the task force would be able to survive a few moments without him. They seemed to be holding their own well enough, but all it took was one misstep for everything to fall apart. He was quick in applying the gel, grimacing slightly as the odourless gel latched onto the wound, providing a water-tight seal in hearbeats. The anaesthetics kicked in fast though, and in seconds he already felt the pain alleviate slightly.

He was getting ready to throw himself back into the fray when the first set of explosions sounded. He’d barely recovered from the noise, fury and dust when the second set were blown.

Teach me to wear a visor instead of a helmet he thought between coughs, spluttering due to the quarries worth of dirt and dust he’d inhaled. He picked himself up from where the force had thrown him from his feet and gingerly poked his head over his low cover, searching for his allies.

A Husk was the first thing to emerge from the dust cloud, bloodied and battered but still very much ‘alive’. It looked about the tunnel in dazed confusion before spotting Anderson. Without any more thought it threw itself into a charge, shrieking and howling, fingers outstretched. Two more Husks and a Marauder burst from the smog behind it, joining the madcap dash.

He was completely out of thermals, his body still ached, and he wasn’t sure just how reliable his leg would be under stress, even with the medi-gel. He forced a grin through his growing worry. This is what all those twenty hour a day combat training missions at the Villa had been for, hadn’t they? He ignited his omniblade, the orange monomolecular edge crackling with savage intent.

Suddenly gunfire burst from behind him, the familiar pop and crack of a Valkryie rifle, the accompanying staccato of several M-8 Avengers firing in unison. The Husks in front of him fell, and moments later several figures in SA armour advanced past him, moving towards the dust cloud, firing at the Husks and providing cover for the Task Force. Anderson turned to their leader, a mountain of a man wearing the N7 badge.

“What took you so long, Vega?”

Clean up of the Husks was swift with the help of Vega and his squad. Before they knew it the last of the Reaperfied corpses was down and the team could work on securing the area and patching their wounds, though the more seriously hurt would need more professional aid. Vega explained to Anderson that his squad had gotten turned around in the labyrinthine tunnels, and that’s what had taken them so long to arrive. Still, better late than never.

He also heard how Ethan Sartiel, a Katabasis biotic who Aegon had recruited early but had been attached to Vega’s squad for this mission, had abandoned his comrades and forged on ahead, joining the Task Force long before the SA marines arrived. Sartiel had been benched for to the reinforcments for such contempt of command structure, so Anderson imagined his Turian colleague would have some choice words for the young Biotic.

Speaking of choice words, he overheard Salissa claim that it was ‘fun’ on earth while the Reapers were there. With a wordless growl he marched towards were the woman was applying medi-gel to Giles. He had never heard such disrespect. Billions of people had lost their lives during the Reaper Wars, but she thought it had been fun?

“There was nothing ‘fun’ about a genocidal race of synthetic abominations invading our home planet and devastating our people ...” He snapped, and would have continued had a Systems Alliance marine not approached him and said that his presence was requested by Major Coats above ground. Anderson glared at Fortia, fully intending to continue berating her later, before nodding his understanding.

“Ok Katabasis. Pick up your gear and any salvage, then make your way topside. Ellis, I’ll send some engineers down for you, see if they can’t get that armour of yours functional.”

The Task Force had slowly made their way back up to the city proper, emerging back into the weak London sunlight from the same Baker Street Station terminal gate that many of them had entered the underground through. There they encountered the hub command of the Systems Alliance marines who had been tasked with reinforcing them. Those members of Katabasis needing medical aid were seen to by medics, while Ellis’ suit was given patch repairs by three engineers, just enough to get him up on his feet and moving again. Tiberius, Rayes, Rol and their Cerberus prisoners had already been escorted to the command post, where the scientists had been remanded into SA military police custody.

Anderson was being debriefed by Coats, and if anyone was paying attention they would be able to tell something was wrong by the expression of ashen-faced shock on the young Spectres face. After sometime he gave a salute to the Major, obviously dismissed, and approached the gathered Task Force slowly, the pain of his wounds evident on his face and in his ginger movements.

“We’re finished here people.” His brow was furrowed, and his expression guarded, clear signs that something was bothering him. “You all now have twenty-four hours to get your affairs in order. Say good bye to loved ones, gather your belongings, settle bar tabs. After those twenty-four hours are up we want to see you’re here.” He paused to tap a few buttons on his omni-tool, and as he did so each member of Katabasis received a private message, detailing a new set of co-ordinates and a complex series of letters and numbers.

“That address is for a private shuttle port located upon the roof of the Metropolitan Police station, formerly known as New Scotland Yard. Flash the serial number attatched to the message to the reception staff and they will take you directly to the shuttle port, will Aegon and I will meet you, there to take you all to our command center.”

“If you are late, we will assume you have changed your mind about joining the Task Force, and leave without you. Raye's, please send the information you gathered from Cerberus to Aegon and I. We'll trust you not to flee the planet without doing so.”
He fell silent for a moment, looking down at his feet as if he had more to say, but wasn’t sure how to say it. After a long moment he looked back up, and now his features were set and his brows were narrowed.

“I you should all know that you did good work down there today. Not flawless, of course, but you went down into the dark with minimal information and got the job done. A job which was harder than anyone had predicted. Without our intervention, who knows what Cerberus would have done with those Husks. No matter what else happens, no matter what else gets said, we stopped them today. We saved lives. That’s on us.”

“However, you should all also know that when we collapsed that tunnel we also undermined the foundations of a tenement building above it. The whole structure crumbled, almost instantly I’m told. There were sixteen families living in that tenement. Seventy-three people. Emergency works are ongoing, and they’ve managed to rescue twenty-seven civilians. Another thirty-two have confirmed to have been out when the building fell. Three corpses have been pulled from the wreckage. One was a child, less than seven years old. That’s still eleven people left unaccounted for.

“That’s on us too.”
He lapsed into silence once more, but this one was far shorter before he turned to his Turian counterpart.

“C’mon Aegon. The Council is waiting on our report.” The N7 limped away from the group, towards a nearby shuttle.

Gilvert, Alria and Ethan in the Aftermath.

Giles wasn't without aid for too long, the other Krogan; the one who liked to swing his hammer around and crush husks with it like they were pieces of paper came to the rescue, of sorts, and he praised him for his capability to kill husks with nothing but his foot.
The massive Krogan lifted his hammer up, which was still covered in goo from his last kill and pushed apart two large pieces of rock that allowed Giles to move a bit more freely.
He was about to thank him before Salissa vaulted her way over to him, and helped remove more rubble, allowing her to apply some med-gel; he was still covered but at least the pain was dealt with, slightly.
" Uggh, thanks you two, I didn't really fancy being buried alive I hear it's not a nice way to go."

Alria kept her head low and waited until the inevitable boom came, radiated and shaking the tunnel, though thankfully her helmet sheltered her ears from any real damage and discomfort. Still wanting to make sure things had settled at least partially she stayed in cover until the vibrations and rumbles had died down. Electing to peek her head up and see what was going on she noticed that the battle field had changed quiet a bit. With the tunnel leading into the Cerberus base destroyed they were left safe, but also buried and covered in dust and rubble.

One such person that was near her was the Drell she knew was on the team but had yet to meet given her place on the infiltration team. Looking around to first make sure the coast was clear she vaulted out of cover and deftly traversed the uneven ground towards her ally. Yet before she could ask if he was still breathing he answered her question by speaking about how he'd rather not go out in this way... Which makes perfect sense to her.

"Sit still, I'll get you out." She said to him, already propping herself body length in a crevice to use her legs and full body to torque a large and broken piece of ceiling from off the trapped Drell. It was rough and really she was having a lot of trouble with it, but at least it was moving... if only a tiny bit.

Two rescuers quickly became three when one of the Turian females from the infiltration group came over, she began using her body as a lift to remove what hopefully would be the last bit of rubble needed for him to get free.
Her efforts weren't in vain, he could begin to shuffle his body a bit and began worming his way out of what was no beginning to be a hole from his prison.
It felt like crawling through fire, each movement he made hurt the medi-gel only slightly numbing it "Keep at it I'm nearly free..." His voice was pained, every word took effort to say.

Alria kept up the pressure and while it was taxing it gave the Drell an out and before long he was free which left her the chance to relax and let the rock drop, deeper than it had originally been into the now empty space. With a huff and a moment to gather herself she swiftly got herself out of the crevice and back on top of the rubble, looking at the now free Drell through her visor. He seemed hurt, but stable and alive.

That was about when Anderson came around to reem Salissa a bit and Alria just kept to her own business, checking not only herself and her own gear to make sure she had all of her things intact and accounted for, but also to make sure that her allies could make it out of the cave on their own, "Are you okay?" She started to ask the Drell, still not really knowing his name, "Can you get out on your own?"

Giles was about to thank everyone for their aid before Anderson came over to the small group and gave Salissa a verbal beating for her comments on the Reaper war, they were a tad bit insensitive...
The call went out that their operation had come to a close and the other members of the task force began filing out of the ruined tunnels.

Looking towards the Turian who had done the last push and freed him he gave a cough before replying. " I'll live, I think..." Placing his left arm on a nearby bit of rubble he lifted himself up off the ground with difficulty, but he could stand, if not exactly stable in his stance.

Seeing the Drell fight to stand and maintain his upright posture Alria dashed ahead to support and help however she could. After all this Drell was now her ally and that in turn meant she didn't want to see him suffer more than he had to.

The Turian now aided his footing as well as removing him from the rubble from earlier, he almost forgot what it was like to have allies like this; his old merc group would have just been slung over the Krogans back like a satchel of rags.
"Thank you, again...Sorry, I don't believe we've met, my name is Gilvert Somner, or just Giles, whatever suits you best, and in answer to your previous question, probably not; just need to grab my satchel before we leave, it's over there somewhere.
Giles gave a sweeping motion of his hand as a gesture towards where had dropped it earlier, he could leave it... it didn't seem worth staying in this area just to pick up something he could easily replace.
" Ah screw it, lets just get out of here before the tunnel collapses or something."

Alria continued to support the Drell as he spoke, listening to him give a name, "Name's Vicrinus, Alria Vicrinus." She said in response, focusing more on getting her ally to safety and when he spoke of his satchel she was about to advise against it unless he had some irreplaceable in it, though he beat her to the punch.

So with Giles she started to make her way towards the exit, looking to follow suit with the rest of her team to make it to the light of the sun. The trek wasn't exactly quick, mostly due to the state of her ally, but that didn't bother her. She'd just rather make sure that he made it to the top in one piece.

Then once out in the light of the sun she took stock of what changed and the answer was a lot. A building had collapsed in on itself most likely from their actions down below. Though with a open sky above their heads Alria helped to guide Giles to a seat, making sure he wasn't about to get a worsening condition due to the action packed event they just went through.

The journey to the surface wasn't smooth although it was considerably easier on Giles' body thanks to Alria, she supported him all the way to the outside world, and into the the soothing sunlight, the stark contrast for being in the murky depths of the tunnels however straight into the bright light made him squint but it was nice to be out of that godamned hell hole.
As Alria helped him to a seat the gravity of what the mines had done really hit home, one of the buildings that laid on top of the area where the mines had went off had sunk into the ground.
The area around them was swarming with personnel from the Systems Alliance whom were prepping for a rescue mission.

It as at this time that the entire group had collected and Anderson addressed them all on their new tasks, as well as some bad news.
They all seemed to impress in one way or another as the Spectres decided to keep them all on for their task force; they were to meet at the designated co-ordinates in 24 hours on the dot; or they will be left behind.
The bad news finally arrived when they discovered that their actions had resulted in the deaths of numerous civilians, and potentially the deaths of even more unless the rescue operation was a success; none of the task force were required to do anything about it, it was merely a result from their actions which inevitably were more important than the lives of a few civilians.
It was a pity to hear about it, but it didn't really affect Giles too much, sometimes a few must die so that the majority may live.
It was merely the way things worked.

"A pity to hear about that, but far more would have died had we not done what we did..." Giles said in a low voice towards Alria.

Alria was looking over Giles just to check and apply some more medi-gel or wrap his wounds with the little bit of field medicine she knew when Anderson came around. It was good to know that despite all of the hiccups and unseen factors that played into the mission they still all made it out with a job well done. Though the lack of insight was more of a logistics issue, which wasn't her fault, so all in all she was happy with the outcome.

Though that's when the hard news hit and outwardly she didn't show too much emotion. Though on the inside she felt hurt. It was one thing to have incapacitated casualties. You know, the kind that can recover and go back to their lives and it's another thing to know the extent of the damage, but living it like this didn't sit right with her. Giles had his opinion and while she did partly agree it didn't make the realisation any less hard.

It was at that point that she left Giles alone to reach up to her helmet, pressing a few buttons and twisting it slightly before it came off to reveal her incredibly young face. "They didn't deserve this, but far more could have been harmed if we did anything different." She said not only in response to Giles, but also to Anderson. "I wish I could help, but this isn't what I know. I'm out of my element to help these people and as much as I wish to..." She continued starting to trail off clearly thinking for a few moments, "This is something for professionals. They know what to do and how to do it. Are you okay Giles? I can help you to where you need to go if you aren't."

Ethan's rush that he always got from a fight hadn't quite abated, making him livid to hear that the battle was over already. No banshees? Brutes? Harvesters? Where was the fun in killing your average, crappy husk? Couldn't Cerberus have made something...better? Like they had on Omega? Destroying something like that would have sated him quite nicely.

Then again, he was tired. The sheer volume of flares he had thrown around have drained him a great deal, and he never felt satisfied when he was tired. It was a very annoying habit of his.And yet, all the flares had been wasted because some bloody Drell managed to one-up him!
He really wanted to find somewhere to take a nap, but Anderson had called a meeting of the Spectres, and, being part of their little group, meant he HAD to join them.

Y'know, because it wasn't as if they were able to communicate remotely.

Still, he listened intently as Anderson spoke, ignoring the others there as they helped each other, and whatnot. He didn't know a thing about field medicine, and he really didn't feel like talking to people after that Turian ignored him so rudely earlier. Finally, Anderson got to a rather...unpleasant point. The biotic's eyes widened, and his mouth tightened slightly before he swore quietly under his breath, quickly hoping no one would hear that. He was about to immediately make his excuses and leave, only to hear something that piqued his interest.

"Indeed." he smiled, looking at the Turian and the Drell. "How many people do you think we saved today? If all those husks got out... I'm not really sure I would like to think about that. And I hear we captured Cerberus people down there. Interrogation should be interesting."
He laughed a little, something very unlike him.
"Stop worrying about who you couldn't save, we all did fine. And there are people to help the civilians, they don't need you."
He turned to the Drell.
"...Nice job with the mines." he said, a flicker of annoyance passing over his face, as if saying it had been like squeezing an inconvenient favour from him.

Alria seemed to be an adequate medic, at least for basic field dressings, Giles always seemed to butcher them up when he did them himself; the second application of medi-gel brought a soothing warmth over his body as the double dose set in, the pain didn't seem to be there anymore more like just a dull ache.
Giles was about to respond to her before he got a good look at her face, it was... difficult to discern age in a Turian, especially the men, the women seemed to acquire harder edges as they aged in their carapace like features but he could tell from his experience in dealing with Turians over the years that she was very young.
She must be proud? Or maybe humbled at being picked by Spectres for a mission, it took a lot to impress them after-all, but maybe the reaper wars brought out the best in the young ones; or alternatively the worst, as a prime example seemed to show itself naught but moments after Alria finished talking.

This human was another face he did know, but it was clear he was a taskforce member, another young one too.
He seemed to be arrogant, and typically people who laughed at the prospect of interrogation weren't the most stable, he knew a few Batarians like that and they had some really dark streaks in them, whenever someone gets a rush out of inflicting pain to others they're not going to be very nice, that much was certain.
Insensitive was another one, had Anderson overheard those words this young boy would have tasted the back end of a N7 gauntlet.

"I would be careful how you say things... whoever you are... there will be people who won't find your words very kind, and amongst a group like this, that's a quick way to end up missing a limb, if you're lucky.

Alria wasn't particularly happy at the moment, but she was quickly getting happier as things started to wind down on their end. At least she was getting happier until the obnoxiously familiar voice of that Human came back around. She still didn't even know his name yet and already twice he's seemed to go out of his way to say something stupid to her. If he was trying to make friends he was only making her want to hit him... and that seemed like it was getting more and more likely. Still despite his insulting and obnoxious words she kept a level head; though her growing smile vanished from her face. "What's wrong with you? Getting off on the idea of pain and saying shit like that? Do you even think about what you say? Or do you just enjoy putting your foot in your mouth?" She posed to him, turning to face the bothersome, smug Human. "If you don't mind... and even if you do, would you go find somebody else to harass?" She finished, really just trying to separate herself from this Human.

Turning back to Giles she finished up to bandages and double checked them, not paying attention to the Human and hoping that he'd take the heavy handed hint she gave him. To try and refocus on less annoying things she started to speak to Giles again, reaffirming her question, "Do you need help? I can help you, trust me."

"No, I don't take pleasure from pain. I take pleasure in causing as little of it as possible, it from a certain point of view."

Ethan looked at the Drell, then the Turian with confusion in his eyes, with his mouth tightening again, with them being the only things betraying the personality in his head. He started at them for five seconds, ten, fifteen, before he finally spoke.
"...I've offended you." he said simply, stating the complete obvious before he spoke again.
"...I..." he croaked, struggling to get the words out. "A...pologise. I meant no offence. I believed you had some form of...guilt over what happened today." He shook his head.
"I believe we have gotten off on the wrong foot, as...some say. Might i have your name?"

Giles thanked Alria once again for her aid, she was proving to be quite the ally, he would have to pay her back for this, somehow.
"Well, as you've said yourself, there's little else we can do here, barring the aptitude at clearing rubble in the search for people, I'm in no shape to be back in there... I was planning on getting some drinks after this mission, as a wind down, I suppose we could still, if you're up for it? Raise a glass to the fallen, that's the best we can do for them."
Going for drinks seemed slightly improper given the situation, but it had been a tradition he and his merc group had done for over 20 years, without fail, when they lost someone drinks were raised in their name, when they pulled off a difficult mission they were raised merrily, it had been something they always done, and to stop now... it didn't feel right.

Turning his head away from Alria he looked at the human, it was entirely possible that this naive boy had merely said the wrong things that had meant to come out differently in his head, it was easy to do; if that was the case he deserved at least a second chance.
Although for his health it would probably be better if he stayed away from Alria for a while, she would probably unleash a good beating upon him if he stayed anywhere near her.
And Giles was in no position to stop that from occurring.

"I'm Giles, and you?"

Alria looked a bit confused at the Human's words. While they didn't seem genuine she could help but notice how hard it was for him to say them. That in turn let her know that maybe while he was an enormous ass, he wasn't rotten to the core. Still she wasn't ready to forgive him, but he'd have to learn her name eventually so she could at least give him that, "Vicrinus." She said curtly, clearly still somewhat pissed at the Human.

Still though, Giles gave his answer and she had an offer to contend with. She wasn't much of a drinker, but was sure a bit of a partyer. Of course Giles wasn't in the proper partying shape, but drinks and parties tended to sit hand in hand regardless. "I could go for a drink. You buying?" She posed to the Drell, more curious about his answer than anything and it was shown by the playful smirk on her lips.

Ethan nodded at both the Drell and the Turian. At least they seemed both willing to talk now, it seemed apologising had worked. He should have probably tried that more often in the past. Would have saved a whooooole lot of trouble before.
"Ethan Sartiel." He introduced himself. "Lieutenant, that is. My rank. At least, I think it is. I'm not sure what I'm referred to as now. I don't know if spectres use ranks or anything."
He scratched his head. Even he could see the awkward situation now, and decided to blurt out the first thing he could think of.
"...so....drinks, huh? May I attend?"

Giles returned the smile Alria gave and responded with " Well I suppose I do owe you for all those bandages you spent on me, so yeah I'm buying; just go easy on my pocket okay? I know a decent place that sells Dextro-Amino acid stuff, so you can drink without tossing your guts up on the table. The prices are alright as well, the Landlord gives me good prices since he knows me and my old Merc band."

It turned out that the human was known as Ethan, and somehow he had managed to acquire the rank of Lieutenant, strange since he didn't seem like officer material, although the reaper war did manage to create a vacuum of officer positions, war always did, people ascend the ranks faster to replace them and as a result the quality of them declines.
The fact that Ethan wanted to go with them to get drinks however was slightly concerning, the thought of alcohol in these two would only mean things would turn nasty, eventually.
But he didn't say anything for the time being, no doubt Alria would do that for him.

Alria heard Giles first and his confirmation of some free drinks. It was kind of cute how he worried about his wallet, but it was unneeded. She didn't need much to get silly and she wasn't looking to get silly. So she'd only gouge him for one, then maybe get her own is she felt like it. At least that was her plan.

However that is when the Human spoke up to reveal himself as Ethan... and that he apparently wanted to join them. Spirits... Why can't this day just have a good moment to it's name? "I know you said you're sorry, but you've already insulted me twice. And even then that apology sure didn't feel genuine... So why do you think I'd ever want to get a drink with you?" She said a bit bitchily. But at this point she felt fully vindicated in her answer. Still though, while she sure didn't like from from the two strikes he already had, it takes three to get out... "I won't say no, but I'm not buying a round for you."

Ethan waited for the Drell to answer, only to not hear a word. Odd. Maybe those wounds of his were tiring him to the point that he couldn't really speak. He briefly wondered if the medi-gel was working, when the Turian spoke.

He was surprised. What did she mean about the apology not being genuine? Why would he do it if he wasn't sorry? Of course he was sorry. He hardly went around screwing with people for fun.

Well, most of the time.

...some of the time.

...he wasn't doing it now.

"...twice?" He asked, looking genuinely confused. "...how did I insult you twice? I only insulted you once, accidentally, a minute ago. Are you really that offended that you count it as two?"
He shook his head slightly. Dealing with people was so bloody tedious. There was a reason he never did it.
"And why would you buy a round for me? I have my own money. I can buy it myself." The look of confusion was still on his face.

Gilvert sighed internally "This gunna end well...
Okay Ethan, you're welcome to join us, but I think we should wait for a while before we set off, in case others wish to join us- plus I need a little break before moving again, and Alria I'm sure he... misspoke we can still have a decent drink together, Gods know I need one, or three.
Giles hoped that if Alria was going to do anything rash, she'd at least wait till the Spectres weren't looking, hopefully nothing would come of this however.
What harm could a few drinks cause?

The next half hour to three hours, (Ellis was never sure exactly how long it took), were a blur.

Orange and blue holographic drones whirled around him in a fever-dream tornado of bright light, deep vital scans, and bumping his suit around.

Ellis' painkiller shot three times in two minutes, far beyond the ordinary LD50 for the chemical. Ellis dreamed.

An asari held him while he suffocated, removed from his shell, exposed, naked, on the surface of a lush planet. Unclothed, possibly feral krogan stood around them. Tuchanka? Ellis thought. Pre-Nuke? The asari comforted him. She was familiar, but only vaguely. The rifle next to her. Her armor. It was as though the memory were clouded somehow.

You're gonna be okay. Everything's gonna be o-

FLASH

A neon light roared across the sky, the glory of a god, laying waste to all in sight. In the white light, three figures stood, silhouettes against the nothingness of nuclear war.

A turian. Ellis cried out but to her he had no voice. He fought to stand, but had no limbs. He choked and flailed- his skin was gone, burned away.

The Asari screamed and faded into the light. The turian was now male. He was tall, strong, commanding. You're lucky we traced you, or I'd have shot you on sight.

The turian became the Illusive Man. He ashed his cigarette into Ellis' screaming mouth.

Everything went black.

Swallowed in the dark.

Ellis awoke, gasping for breath, a cold sweat stinging his pseudoskin, icy burning in every nerve. He lay on a forklift, a makeshift stretcher, apparently, judging by the paramedics scanning him. He glanced down. They'd repaired his knee, but only barely, likely using resized schematics from a YMIR or some similar mech.

A sudden ZZZZZZZZZZZZZHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! startled him from the right. A technician with a drill of some sort. A new arm! White and glossy and new! A little orange loading bar popped up in Ellis' visor, signaling the pairing of the new appendage. It completed quickly.

The new arm was slightly smaller, a tad slower, a little weak. And it was white. "NERO, system check."

A distorted male voice answered.

"Damage to central components have limited my capabilities. Suit has been fitted with modified LOKI mech arm. Professional opinion: it will suffice. NOTIFY: Unable to connect to Cerberus Information Server."

"When in Rome." He could feel another headache coming on.

Naturally, his painkillers shot again.

"Tell Vella. She's... good. Gotta go- Metro Pee Dee... NERO, go to... Scotland Yard for me."

His last words before blacking out again.

He awoke, once more, still laying on the forklift. Except now, the forklift sat in grass, by a tree. The tracks showed that someone had driven it up and simply left it there. Ellis looked around, still stationary. It was getting dark. "NERO! It's dark. Did we miss it?" The sign read 'Metropolitan Police'.

"Allies have not arrived. Seasonal changes account for early evening. "

Ellis groaned. "How long until they get here?"

At least you're not late.

"Undetermined. Unable to connect to Cerberus Information Server."

He stood, stretched his back, relishing the little pops that come from stress relieved, and tried out his new arm, leaving a big Ellis-handprint in the tree, finger-grooves running deep. He smiled.

He didn't know London well, and was not particularly inclined to explore. Deciding he'd better rest, he sat and waited on the forklift.
