Sure. Just attach the lens to the very back of the eye, where it connects to the optical nerve, with the opposite orientation to the lens that focuses light.

If I hadn't seen a file on Shinji's condition then I wouldn't know either, but with what was in there I would say it's likely your outfit was at least a recreation of the one you had before.
