Hi. Someone needs to do something about the quality of the crayons at restaurants. The color doesn't even stick to the menu. How am I supposed to compete with a child with these?

Update 013226.01:12
Due to recent character submissions, we will not be accepting anymore firebenders for the TLA group. However, the LSF group is still looking for a Firebender and an Earthbender.

347 AG. The world of the Avatar as you once knew it has changed dramatically. 100 years ago, Republic City led a short but bloody campaign against the world to bring an end to the 'Bender Threat', overwhelming the other nations with the use of a frightening and powerful new technology. At war's end, Republic City was relocated to within the walls of Ba Sing Se and became The Republic. They shored up the walls they destroyed and shut out a land marred by generations of conflict. A land further scarred and warped by their hand. In the span of just a few years, The Republic became the last officially recognized stronghold on the planet and its sole super power.

For a hundred years after, its citizens enjoyed a lasting peace, one that is all they have ever known. Strict regulation and a zero-tolerance policy against all Benders have seen to the near extinction of a once proud people. So removed have they become that many within the walls lead lives having never met one. The history itself has become muddled and what is widely accepted as the truth about Benders leaves a disposition that remains disagreeable bordering on cruel. As far as the wider public is concerned, the world is better off, as in their absence life has flourish, global conflicts are nonexistent and the only dangers present are those that lurk far beyond the walls of the city.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________
There are those who question this truth, however. Those that look beyond the walls at the world left behind and imagine what might lay in wait to be rediscovered. Those who hear whispers in empty rooms or see lights dancing in the dark. Feel warmth on cold nights, courage in uncertainty or are gifted the kindness of a stranger. Like the memory of some long forgotten dream, they know another world once existed full of life and color. Of many people from many nations in harmony with one another. There are those who know of what once was and in secret, dare to ask the question, "Where is the Avatar?".

This is a mature take on the world of the Avatar (the Nickelodeon series) set roughly a century and a half after the events of The Legend of Korra. Mature themes will be explored including murder and death, abuse, drug use and physiological trauma. In-world technology has progressed to our near future. There is widespread AI robotics, wearable technology, prosthetic and biological enhancements and even flying Satomobiles.

Our narrative is split and focuses on two different groups of individuals on opposite sides of a coin. This means two active threads that run in tandem (all players hangout and communicate through a single shared Discord). I've listed the two groups below and provided some detail about each and where they currently are in the story, but note that the information provided here is limited. Further details will be discussed with interested parties. Also note that while 'The Last Avatar' group is open to general interest with no restrictions on element selection, 'The Red Lotus' is looking to fill an Earthbender and Firebender role.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The central event that kickstarted the entire roleplay began at a synergy storage facility located in the Lower Ring of Ba Sing Se. This facility, the primary power source for nearly all of the city, suffered a catastrophic accident; an explosion that not only decimated the immediate area but also had unseen, adverse effects across all of The Republic.

In The Last Avatar, this explosion activated in some the ability to bend the elements, while those who already could bend and were living in hiding, found it difficult to control their abilities. In the ensuing chaos, many attempted to flee the city in fear for their lives, but over the course of an intense few days, only our central characters arrived safely in the desert settlement of Tu Zin. Since their arrival, many spent the following week grappling with their new reality and for some, their new powers, while others continued to struggle to accept themselves. Meanwhile, the leader of Tu Zin, Unye, who is also an Earthbender himself, has requested their help in investigating a string of disappearances in and around the settlement.

This is our main group and what is essentially the protagonists of our story. All Benders in this group began with their bending knowledge and practice severely limited, thanks in no small part to the Republic's thorough scrubbing of all bending culture from within the city. There would have been no easy access to bending teachers or materials. Their understanding of bending since their escape has only marginally improved and anyone looking to join this group will have abilities that are similarly constrained. Single blasts of fire. Small bursts of air. A simple rock throw or short streams of water. This of course also means that there will be no sub-bending skills at the start ie. blood or metalbending. All interested player's characters will begin their journey as part of a second wave of Benders who have recently escaped Ba Sing Se and have safely arrived in Tu Zin.

In The Red Lotus, the explosion activates a secret branch of The Republic Security Force (RSF) known as the Lotus Security Force (LSF). To quell the chaos and subdue a massive threat to The Republic's peace, a handful of agents of the LSF are tasked with chasing down and eliminating any Benders that are attempting to escape the city. This initial mission is mostly a success with only a handful of Benders escaping into the desert where it is assumed the desert elements themselves will finish them off. Since then, these agents have remained active and continue their investigation of Bender threats both within the city as well as within their own organization. Currently, they are attempting to apprehend two particularly dangerous individuals, one of which was one of their own.

This group is considered the main antagonists in the story and act as foils to those in The Last Avatar. Of course, it is understandable that not everyone can and not everyone is comfortable writing a villain. As such, it is important that I stress the atypical nature of the roles in this group and ensure interested parties understand what is expected should they be interested in joining. As explained to those who have taken on this challenge, The Red Lotus is less a power fantasy and more an important plot device. We are a tool used to tell a more fulfilling story and exist to challenge the main group and ultimately lose. However, that does not mean the journey to that end cannot be a compelling one. The lives of LSF agents are complicated and tragic and shrouded in mystery, leaving a lot of room for creative storytelling. On a positive note, all Benders in this group are allowed the full range of their bending prowess, including a single sub-bending skill. Players interested in this group will need to discuss with me where they would like to start their character as there is a lot of flexibility in the narrative here.

If either of these groups peak your interest, feel free to reply here or DM me directly.

Mistress Dizzy
Shao’s words tore something loose in Jin. As his metal fist closed around their neck and drew them in, a nauseating wave bubbled up in their throat. And as he yanked Jin up to meet face to face, grinning in triumph, Jin let it it loose. They reeled back and spit a stored mouthful of blood, saliva and rage -

straight into Shao’s eyes.
Exit
Shao flinched, shutting his eyes and reeling back half a step as he reflectively released his grip around Jin’s neck allowing them to slip free.
Mistress Dizzy
“What happened?” The white knife found purchase in the notch of Shao’s arm, the small gap where the wired weapon hid. Little cracks like that were great – a weakness to exploit for those who knew how to use them. Jin let gravity do the work, drawing them down.

“I flew, yeah. It was beautiful. For a while, I really thought I’d hop the moon.” Jin drove the sharp blade down, feeling the hiss and pop of a severed cable. “Then the LSF boot came down and stomped me back to the real world. Reminded me of what I am.” With his arm out of commission, Shao tilted, off balance. Suddenly without the ability to counter his weight, he hit a knee.

There. That was the opening. Jin hit the ground, squared their feet and aimed the knife with both hands. “I am nothing but a roach. One bug in a million fighting for scraps.” They raised the blade up and then stabbed Shao straight in the neck. Blood soaked through their gloves quickly, but they pulled it out. Another strike, a second hole. “I lived through every year thinking about who I’d left behind, how much I missed them. How much they missed me.” Jin wasn’t sure Shao could even hear them over his desperate gargling gasps. They yanked the bone knife free, and drove it hilt deep again. The confession hit the ears of a dying man.

“No one missed me. Not a damn soul cared, or remembered, or- or waited. So you wanna know what happened? The Flying Frog was just a stupid kid who the world taught better. Fuck the heroics and fuck the handouts. And fuck you.” Jin shoved Shao’s body away, realizing their front was coated in his cooling blood.

Exit
Katakuri could have guessed anything less than a surprise lightning strike wouldn’t have any effect on a vigilant Zhen. The curtain of fire did little to the airbender and so, instead of continuing to fight them from a distance, Katauri chose to move in.

As Zhen passed harmlessly underneath him, he rotated himself out of the air and tumbled down to the ground in a graceful spin, landing only a few feet away from the airbender. Behind her, he could see lava bursting out of the ground from under the large stone cube that had been dropped on 141.
Fiber
Zhen spoke to Kata first.

“They killed fifty stray dogs today, you know. They were looking for Archer and Duchess, so any that matched the visual description had to go. Did we get them? I guess we’ll find out eventually.”

Kata jumped, flipping forward to release an enormous blast of fire from both feet.* Zhen had seen that one before, it was the one he brought out when destruction was his only goal, one that she had seen punch through solid concrete. She ducked under it, gilding forward with a thin cushion of air between her and the ground, sliding without friction. He landed and she pivoted to get behind him, then lifted him up by the waist and bent back to throw him into the air.* He went flying, soaring over her head, but he rotated fast enough to land on his feet and had drawn both knives by the time she was able to face him again.*

They were close enough to talk again. Zhen said “You know Kata, the LSF keeps records on all of us, records on everything we’ve done, from our sleep cycles to training performance. Does it bother you that I was able to look up how many children you’ve killed? Let’s take a few random cases and see if you remember them all.“

Zhen had her shock glove charged and they both swung at each other, parrying blows knowing that one slash or one shock could be enough to end the fight. Zhen had killed firebenders, Kata had killed airbenders, but neither knew how this fight would end. Each had played out in their heads dozens upon dozens of times, built from their experience sparring together, and now it was becoming real. With her non-shocking hand Zhen buffeted Kata with short but weak air blasts, creating space and disrupting his balance. Kata responded by dropping one of his knives and the crackle of electricity began to build at his fingertips. He let loose at point blank range, too close to dodge even for one as fast as Zhen.

He was surprised when he felt something grabbing his lightning hand, then saw Zhen right in his face. His fingers were caught in the grip of Zhen’s shock glove, which no longer glowed, no longer functioned, but had absorbed the entire bolt of lightning and fried its own circuits in the process. Zhen did not give him the time to contemplate, as she grabbed his other arm and twisted it, using the circular motion to summon a light airblast to push him away and break his grip on the knife.*

She had his knife in her hands now and launched it at him along with an airblast to send it even faster. A crash rang out as it grazed the side of Kata’s mask and shattered it, but Kata himself was not harmed as it hurtled into the back wall of the chamber.

Zhen caught her breath and continued her speech. She said “Fei Yuan, 12 years old, earthbending prodigy who tried to demolish a police precinct in the lower ring after her parents were arrested. Deemed too dangerous to be given a chance to surrender, you executed her on the spot. Im Kyung-chul, nine years old, died from exhaustion during LSF training, during an exercise you assigned. Bo Han…”
Exit
Kata’s eye twitched. The subtlest shift from his usual self that disappeared almost as quickly as it appeared.
Fiber
“Also nine, your classmate in training. You killed him when the old man was disappointed in both of you and said that one of you could live, if they earned that right. I believe that was your first kill.“
Exit
Kata moved quickly, switching the grip on his remaining knife and reversing his stance before diving in low, closing the gap between himself and Zhen in the blink of an eye. Zhen reacted just as quickly and again, the two began exchanging blows.
Fiber
Like the old training drills, each was fighting for grips, setting up throws, and maneuvering in and out of danger. One moment Zhen had a wrist lock and tumbled to throw Kata, the next he matched her motion and remained standing.* After many exchanges, finally came one where Zhen proved herself a little faster, a little more aware of the situation and caught Kata’s feet out of position; a result of his lesser used stance. She swept out his support with the subtlest of pushes.

His hand was still reaching out when he fell, and Zhen caught it at the wrist. She cartwheeled with it still grasped tight, and then she rolled onto her back to drag Kata into the path of an airblast she sent forth to launch him high into the sky.* As he flew, she jumped up to meet him, catching both his arms and then using one more airblast to drive them down to the ground even faster. She spiked him onto his head, no hands to cushion the fall, no time to redirect.*

Kata was groggy after the impact, still moving, still conscious, watching Zhen pace. She said “Twenty eight children under the age of thirteen died from collateral damage of Operation Changdao. You successfully terminated the bending gang that the RSF couldn’t, shame about all those fires you set in the lower ring in the process. They caused so much damage that the information warfare and the justice departments had to collaborate to come up with a story about mass arson, did you know that?”
Exit
Memories, recorded in some file back at HQ, were being force fed to Kata and began fighting for space inside his rattled brain, heavily confusing his past and present. Memories of the faces he’d seen in another life, every one of which had been left behind, and the myriad of faces whose eyes he’d closed himself. Memories of every place he’d been to. Beautiful places. Important places. Turned to ash and fire in his shadow.
Fiber
Zhen said “Operation Hwacha, now that was a big one, had every branch from us to the Strategic Bomber Force involved. It wasn’t easy to raze an entire town outside the walls, but as our commanding officer said, we had to show that hunting on his majesty’s royal gamelands has consequences. This didn’t bother attributing each kill, but surely you know how many you killed, right? After all, you were going house to house, room by room, seeing them face to face as they died, you can’t be so callous as to have forgotten them, can you?“
Exit
These were tactics that Kata recognized only Zhen would use; a wealth of knowledge at her fingertips wielded like the sharpened edge of a blade. A blade she continued to prod under his skin with, carving out any minute advantage she could. Kata’s response was quick. He attacked from where he was on the ground on his knees, throwing a pair of fireballs at Zhen that was fueled partly by adrenaline and partly by a half-dazed, building rage.
Fiber
Zhen dodged, amused, but they were a prelude to his actual attack. He lit a jet of fire with his hands and feet and launched himself at her, delivering a knee straight to the front of her face. He smirked when he heard her forehead smack the inside of the helmet, and though he could not see it, blood began to pour from her nose after the impact.

Noticeably wobbly, Zhen kept moving to evade, but Kata followed up with a series of body blows, quick hits to soften her up, each one sapping her stamina. He launched a spin kick which she dodged only to get hit with the opposite leg as he came down*, then Kata unloaded with another series of punches and kicks. She covered and parried them as best she could, but he got a big one through when he unleashed another leaping kick*, adjusting his rotation in mid-air thanks to a small burst of fire propulsion. Perhaps it was the daze of the blows landing, but Zhen never remembered seeing that trick in training. Kata was always capable of surprises.

He popped back up to standing with a handspring*, then gave Zhen a series of punches to the body and head, still impressed that she had managed to remain standing. Inside her helmet the blood was flowing freely, merging with the beads of sweat and running through the thick, damp strands of her hair. Everything was foggy, her head was throbbing with pain, and it appeared one of her teeth was coming loose, but Zhen was still in this. Kata readied one more aerial kick, smashing his shin across Zhen’s chest and sending her to the ground.*
Exit
There was no need for long speeches, no need for goodbye. No more need to live in his haunted past any longer, forced to face his sins or the road he had paved in blood for himself and his daughter. He could end it all here. Silence the woman for good. Destroy that damnable mask she wore, reflecting an image of himself he no longer recognized. It would be quick, he resolved. Faster than the others.
Fiber
He had a bolt of lighting ready in an instant and drove his hand towards Zhen’s downed body, but then he found he missed the mark. He had felt a gentle gust of wind at his side, not enough to move him, but Zhen’s little trick had slid her out of the way and let her grab his other hand, the one he hadn’t used to gather the lightning.
Before Kata had realized it, Zhen had twisted his hand and tangled it up with her legs, turning at blinding speed and pinning him to the ground.* She had her full strength to use his own arm as a lever against him, trapped in an intricate grip that it could not escape. As he struggled his whole shoulder ached with pain, push too hard and his whole arm might snap.

Many training matches had ended exactly this way, as someone who had taught him so much, Zhen had learned his weaknesses and his strengths, and reflected on them as he sat there with one arm trapped and the other flailing, hand and feet in no position to shoot a fire blast that could threaten Zhen.

Again, Zhen lectured him, saying “Two more, a boy and a girl, aged five and six, names unknown. Their parents were nomadic benders who lived outside the walls, had a habit of stealing supplies from piperunners. The children burnt to death in the car. I was only observing from a distance, but I still remember how long the screams lasted. “

In training, this would end with Kata tapping out and everything returning to normal, but now was different. Now, Zhen gathered her chi and began the hand motions to end it all with a burst of nitrogen into Kata’s lungs. The last courtesy she could offer him was a painless death.
She said “You might be wondering why I’m bringing all of these up.”
Exit
“I’m wondering if you’ve ever shut up in your life.” Kata tried to retort through grit teeth, straining just enough against Zhen’s hold to delay an inevitable break.
Fiber
“Do you think I’m trying to find out if you feel guilt for all of that? Hardly. What I find more curious is that I know you felt more sadness about those stray dogs I mentioned at the start than you do now for any of the children that you killed. Chosah will never get to see what kind of man her father really was, but I suppose none of that matters in the end.”

This wasn’t training, and there was no tapping out. With his arm trapped, Kata had one choice and one choice only. He pushed, he pushed further and further as pain shot up it, but it didn’t deter him. He kept going until he heard the sound of his own bones cracking, and felt it go limp, but his now broken arm was not rigid enough to hold him down. He slipped out of Zhen’s grip and rose to his feet, feeling a fire and rage like he had never felt before in his life.

Tarnelu woke up to a significantly changed battlefield.

What had once been a simple domed room with raised platforms had quickly become the nightmare scenario for any bending engagement. Earthen shapes littered the room, seemingly pulled from the ground or dislodged from the walls. In between the debris were pools of molten rock, both a telling detail of Hunang’s true prowess and also the reason why the temperature in the room had risen to an uncomfortable degree. It was near unbearably hot and Tarnelu found himself drenched in sweat with dust clinging to his wet skin. The dust itself was everywhere. It saturated the oxygen-starved air and painted the room in a muddy brown haze. It was getting in his equipment and under the layers of his gear and would have begun to collect in his lungs were it not for the mask Jin gave him, he was sure.

The people too were not where they had been. 141 was missing. The man with the prosthetic arm was laying motionless on the ground with Jin crouched over him, already working on taking a prize. Hunang was standing a ways away, blood covering half her face and staining her clothes and was focused on something other than what would have been easy targets. From under the blood dripping from the gash above her brow, Nelu could see her eyes, a green made more intense by the surrounding red, fixed on the block of rock sitting in the center of a puddle of lava.

Across the room and in the middle of all that dust, Nelu found both Zhen and Kata. Although it was hard to tell, Nelu could guess that Zhen was having it rough. She looked as though she had rolled around in the dirt, when under normal circumstances she took great care to keep her gear pristine, even during a fight. She was covered in brown and black smudged stains, sported a few burn marks and there was even a small dent in her helmet. Kata on the other hand was visibly red in the face and his arm seemed twisted in the wrong direction and dangled unnaturally to his side. What caught Nelu’s attention however wasn’t either of their physical states. Kata was facing Zhen and holding something in his hand, that something being a dancing flame that was rapidly changing colors.

Each member of the LSF excelled at a particular skill. Usually this involved the mastery of a specific study of their element. For Zhen, it was her ability to move pockets of air in unpredictable, nearly impossible to read ways, thanks to her ability to ‘remote bend’ as she called it. For Tarnelu, he was a bloodbender, able to manipulate at will the water trapped in an individual's body. For Jin, among a myriad of other skills honed in the absence of the ability to bend, they were a particularly gifted marksman. Jin was able to quickly, mentally, calculate the trajectory of a shot and place a bullet on target at extraordinarily long ranges. Something others could only do with mechanical assistance if at all.

Katakuri could shoot lightning, but it was not this skill that the LSF recognized as his specialty. His real talent was a seldom used technique, avoided nearly at all costs due to its inherent danger. White flame burned hot. Hot enough to melt rock. Hot enough to burn even the source of the flame itself and combust anything flammable surrounding it, and it didn’t need to be nearby. The heat alone could reach across the room they were all in and burn skin, and while pockets of lava had formed in the enclosed space resulting in a rise in temperature, the fire that grew in the palm of Katakuri’s hand was distinctly felt by everyone.

Hunang was first to react, dropping her concentration on the rock she had been trying to further submerge in the lava and turning to find the source of the sudden spike in heat. In that brief lapse, 141, who had been struggling against her, flung the rock off its back and raised itself out of the molten lava it was sinking into. What emerged was the warped visage of a man who was burning alive. By now, nearly all of the armor on his chest and limbs had turned semi-liquid and was fusing itself to 141’s body. Flames licked across exposed skin, fat bubbled and burst, and what had once been overwhelming screams of pain had turned to hollow, agonizing gasps that crackled like the fire that consumed it.

On its back, where the cooler earthen rock had been pressed, were the last of its munitions, still attached to the remainder of its armor.

a0 Story & Timeline b0 Continent of Tempestua c0 Magicks of Tempestua d0 Important Terms e0 Further Reading . . . .

a0
ATOBAT will be a narrative-focused fantasy roleplay with anime elements that takes place on a continent that was conquered by a Mage King and his sorcerous followers in eras past. Before their occupation on the continent their form of magic did not exist on this land, and with each year that passes the land seems to die a little more. The mages, consciously aware of the land withering beneath their very feet, care not for the nature they egregiously tap from in order to transmute their marvels of creation or destruction.

The story revolves around a cast of mercenaries and for-hire agents of various walks of life that ultimately share a similar goal to Brigitte Fenris: breaking the stranglehold that the Mage King has on the land and its people. Assassins, likely sent by the magocrats in Luxu, entered the lord's castle in Stonecrown and killed most of the Fenris family, with Brigitte and her pact knight Nika fleeing for their lives. Unsure of what forces are working against her, who can be trusted in her home city, or where to go, they decide to travel to Blackpebble to hire a reputable mercenary with a reputation for hunting mages.

The ensemble cast will start small: Brigitte, Nika, The Mage Hunter, and someone they aren't expecting to find in Blackpebble. The cast will be locked to these people for a time-period which allows this small group to interact with levity, become familiar, until the next story beat brings them to the next town where another 1 or 2 mercenaries will have the opportunity to be hired. This means that while the party begins relatively small, it will grow over time to become rather large! The dynamics between player/characters are the most important thing to me, so the starting cast are going to be individuals I've handpicked due to their willingness to work with me the GM and their comfortability with collaborating with me to ensure their interest remains piqued and they remain dedicated to writing a story together.

Applications will always be open for this project! But I would prefer that sheets be sent to me directly via PM before your mercenary's [Job Application] is posted in the thread. This is to be done so I am able to screen the character, work with you on things you and I disagree or agree upon, and refine the sheet so it can be approved the first time it touches the thread. If you are unwilling to wait for the initial group to organically come into contact with your character through plot progression, I would highly recommend that you refrain from wasting your time in doing so. I am familiar with that early itch of interest, but I'm equally if not more so familiar with the wane of it as something new and shiny pops up.

The story so far:
Three long decades of peace.

One would think that with peace you would have a period of ubiquitous prosperity. Where people once divided could come together to solve the greater problems shared throughout the land's many regions. The mages could put their heads together to help less bountiful regions with their crops, the engineers and architects could share their grand designs and technological breakthroughs to stave off the need for magic in areas less rich with aura, the wealthy bigots could put aside their petty squabbles amongst themselves and spend their gold on more important problems. But no, peace simply meant the status quo was not being challenged, and divided people throughout the realm could be comfortable in their division. While deals were often made between the nobles and their territories, the Mage King and his flourishing region Luxu would always remain on the favorable end to the detriment of the others.

Before those three long decades? The elderly would remember a different sort of struggle, one where their sons and fathers lined up at the quartermaster to be armed for bloodshed. Once upon a time it was dwarvish iron and steel clashing with Mage Knights at the western borders. Once upon a time the common man without mageblood rose up to challenge the powers that be, only to have the candle's flame snuffed out before it could grow into an inferno that would challenge the sorcerous sovereignty. And now?... Now we were here, thirty years later and any semblance of rebellion was quashed by the deaths of fathers leaving children as orphans. The Luxuns have made certain to keep it that way with their representatives remaining at every keep and quarry upon the continent; the surveillance state kept resolute by the ever growing presence of aura in the lives of even the most common of folk. The only thorn in their side remaining? The dog-blooded savages of the North, the last vestige of free men and women in Tempestua where magic is frowned upon and passing mages shunned by the working folk.

How long could this last bastion of freedom last? Who could tell at this point? Kurt Fenris, the Black Wolf of the North kept his relations with the court mage stationed in his castle amicable. While he did serve in the Dwarvish Rebellion against the Mage King, some deal must have been made as the remaining stonebloods in his territory were bound in chains just like everywhere else. He knew how fragile his relations would be with the Luxun territory and so, what else could he do other than lead his people the best he could, whilst also remaining compliant with the mageblood's requests growing more invasive and constricting every year. An upcoming summit of all the region's lords and ladies was scheduled to occur, but just in the nick of time a formidable group of mages from Kala would appear at Stonecrown's doorstep seeking audience with the Lord Fenris. What exactly they wished to speak with him for?..

Only time would tell.

Tempestua's name is very befitting. It is a tempestuous continent of constant infighting between the baronies. Were it not for the iron grip of the mage king's rule from the kingdom’s greater territory of Luxu, it very well might have destroyed itself in the few centuries since its founding. The continent itself is full diverse; bounty, treasure, adventure, turmoil, all are plentiful and ripe for the taking by those with the motivation and self-purpose to seek it out. Were it not for the forever churning Blightsquall that surrounds the oceans that surround Tempestua, perhaps eager adventurers might even take to the seas and set off to find lesser claimed lands free of the tumultuous leadership that claims their own.

A cold landscape of frozen soil and hardy trees. Stone is more plentiful than seed, and fire is coveted by the commonfolk. Northern Tempestua is claimed by the iron-blooded wolves of Fenris, a lordship older than the mage king himself and a belief system less based on the founder gods and the royal bloodlines but instead within the land itself. Kurt Fenris has made the most with his barren wintery hellscape with the aid of the dwarf serfs in his fiefdom, hollowing out many of their great and mighty mountains for their precious minerals and the ore that his land is known for: Rimeglass. Though the North lacks soil rich enough for colorful crop yield, Kurt is benevolent enough to assure stockpiles for his people in the months of hardship, enough-so that among the many lords of Tempestua, and is one of the far more beloved leaders throughout the land.
___________________________________________________________________________________________
The people of Fenris are typically fair skinned with a taller stature than the rest of Tempestua’s humans. A woman from the Fenris region could stand upwards of six feet in height, while men in their prime can scale to nearly seven feet tall. The original three tribes of the north were known as the Smoke, Fire, and Ash; bloodlines tracing back to those clans can still be found throughout the Fenris region to this day. Martial preferences here are typically axes or swords paired with a shield for close quarters combat. Their hunters aren't opposed to using bows but they would rather sneak up on their game and execute them with a sword or long knife rather than kill it from a distance.

KALA

Nuogio. Bustling economy and crime hub.

Warmest and closest to the planet's equator, tropical to a degree with palm trees along the coast. The region with the highest density of merchants, gambling, slave trade, brothels. Wealth supersedes anything here, you can buy your freedom just for a jealous friend to hire an assassin to kill you tomorrow. Kala is claimed by the clan of the same name, known eloquently as the Summer Serpents. Its territory is what one might call a temperate paradise, even tropical along the beach settlements with fishing towns and trade hubs that pock the map even into bordering territories. Despite the landscape itself being more kind to its people, the boons of this territory end there— the Kala acquired their lordship through notoriously underhanded methods. Akashi Kala, the Duchess of the South has openly admitted to assassinating several of her own relatives and there are claims that high profile murder throughout the other territories root back to her dealings. The Kala territory works most closely with the capital and the mage king, with Kala controlling the host of if not all mercantile that travels in and out of the capital.
___________________________________________________________________________________________
People from this region are known to have a variety of skin complexions as in the past it was known to be a melting pot of various cultures. After the mages occupied the continent the diversity has thinned out, but native southerners have olive to light brown skin tones and some even a strange golden eye color. Traces of elvish culture can be seen in their military still utilizing glaives and longbows, even their green gold armor with serpentine motifs takes after the old elvish armor worn in decades past. Hunting quarry is less common here, but there are more fishermen in the region of Kala than anywhere else on the continent.

Little to any resemblance remains of the western tribal human culture, the majority of the people in Luxu have cream colored or tan skin with golden or fiery orange hair if they're descended from the original occupants that arrived with the Mage King. Their speech is refined, their clothes are vibrant colors that focus on appearance over function, and the marble spires of their cities scream 'Look at me!' as people enter them.

Cold and dry on its western edge to more temperate in the east, Haldr is by far the most developed land on the continent structurally. The people have roads with plenty of towns and small cities to make a home at. The land of opportunity, if you want to work with your hands go to Haldr to build your own future. Haldr's motto is [Make what can be made.] and from the lowest lowborn to the highest highborn these people really do embody that industrial utilitarianism. Haldr holds the largest population of dwarves remaining on the continent and at every summit of the noble houses, Lanz Haldr fights for the emancipation of the dwarves and openly allows them to live freely in his territory. This of course has put a number of targets on the man and his family's back, though few would risk destabilizing the cornerstone of invention within Tempestua. The land in Haldr's territory begins mountainous and hostile at its western end with it growing more tame and livable towards the eastern coastline.
___________________________________________________________________________________________
Closest kinsmen to the Northern tribes and home to some of the largest dwarven populations remaining. The east was shaped by the giants centuries ago and the stoneblood lineage still carries on in this era. Eastmen are hardy, muscular, and on average built a bit broader than the other humans of Tempestua. While not as tall as the northmen, they are taller on average than those in the south and west. The most notable trait about humans from the east is that they have a somewhat gray tinge to their skin. Hammers, hammers, hammers; sledgehammers, warhammers, if it is a blunt weapon or flintlock its from Haldr.

c1
Aura. Described by the Mage King and his descendants as the life force produced by a living being's soul. Everything from the trees, to the birds and sky produces aura and drawing from that aura is how a mage is capable of producing magic. Upon birth, what determines a mage from someone simply able to practice magic, is an aura core which are often inherited through bloodline genetically but cores can appear in anyone with a high capacity for magic. The more lively a region is, the more rich in aura the environment will be and people of noble bloodlines typically have a higher of capacity of Aura within themselves. This doesn't necessarily mean commoners in more mage centric regions cannot perform higher levels of magic, that is why Magic Academies were constructed in Luxu. However, individuals with lower aura capacity are required to draw it from around the living things around them rather than drawing the aura from themselves. The result of this could be accidentally killing wildlife, decaying forests, or even draining the mage's own lifeforce to the brink of death. For this reason magic, while a major part of Tempestua societies, is heavily policed by the Mage Knights that work directly beneath the king and have a presence in every region of the continent in an effort to prevent catastrophic events from occurring.

Magic is varied and can take almost any form. Whether it be summoning familiars, producing fire out of this air, or creating portals from one location to another, nearly anything that is a byproduct of aura can be defined as magic. Studying magic allows one to learn how to alter the aspect of the aura produced and manipulate its shape, but some magic is passed down from generation to generation through one's bloodline. The mage king's lineage for example, are the only mages that have been capable of the prior spoken portal magic as scholars have attempted to produce formulas capable of moving one's body through space with disastrous results. This is theorized to be a genetic knowledge passed down, having the body and mana core similar to the previous mage's iteration and passing down lost knowledge without the mage needing to actually learn the nitty-gritty bits of how it works. This gives nobles the upper-hand, giving them a head start in adopting the utilization of aura quite early in their lives. This doesn't mean that non-noble individuals haven't gained repute in the practice of magic; Abelor Therian, Raquel Leveloir, Morganna Felayne and many more famous mages have been recorded in history books for their contributions towards the commoner study of magic. But what even the Mage Academies will tell you is that, if you aren't born with a talent for magic or at the least a core, practicing magic is harmful to your biology- rapidly aging the body and cutting your lifespan shorter than what it might have been.

A child is born with a certain degree of talent to detect aura in their environment based on factors like: the amount of aura in their environment, their lineage, and access to study material. The sensation is described by mages as almost undetectable vibrations in the air and earth that can be willed towards you and away from you at the most basic level of manipulation. Once this is mastered, a mage can start to focus on the aura within themself which is described as a warm churning sensation above the navel. When a mage is able to absorb mana from their environment and capture it within themselves, they'll begin to develop an aura core if they weren't born with one naturally.

Without an aura core, magic requires an advanced knowledge of how to facilitate reactions by altering its state of being. Aura requires heat to create fire, cold to create ice, wet to create water, with reagents and materials being the easiest way to create said effects to an easy and repeatable result. The cause and effect ultimately requires the mage to imagine the result, whilst simultaneously having the knowledge of altering aura to come to that conclusion. Where things diverge is when someone has a mana core. The core removes the need for physical mediums or external factors to [weave a spell] and the reasoning for this is the core taking the role of creating those things through a raw accumulation of aura itself. Condensing aura into fluid molecules in the air creates the liquid for a water spell, making them rupture in thin air creates a shockwave, crystallizing them forms shards of ice. Inherited magic also works this way, with families often explaining the complexities of the spells that are passed down so that they are able to easier manifest the strange complexities not seen in other mages.
c2
Wild Magic. The magic that is used by the elves and fae is much different than what the mages use. They don't necessarily cast spells with intricate formula, they don't weave aura into specific shapes for intended effects. Wild Magic does not drain aura from the user or the land and instead simply alters it through strange and unknowable means. Fae have shown this by turning strangers that wander too far into the Rootlands into flora or fauna that can add to the ecosystem. Elves within their primitive societies often willingly transfigured themselves into trees of the forests they lived, many of those trees with elvish faces still etched onto them in Rh'yala.

Rimeglass. In a bygone era long before the first colonizers arrived in Tempestua wiping out the elves and enslaving the dwarves, the northern man tribes communed with a voice in the massive glacier known as Heavenspeak. The Heavenspeak very much a construction made naturally of the earth itself offered blessings to the north tribes in exchange for ritual bloodshed in the form of a great Pack Hunt. A representative from each tribe would select their most formidable hunter to set out within their alpine forests and through unity they would seek out the apex predator of their lands to bring back to the glacier, a mighty Ice Wyrm. Some years the Pack would eb wiped out, and in their death the blood debt to the Heavenspeak would be paid, but should the survivors of the Pack return to the glacier with the Wyrm the voice would spill its own blood in return. From the great glacier glowing azure liquid would course out into the many rivers, and in the frigid waters a strange crystalline structure would form. The Rimeglass would be taken and meticulously forged by ancient dwarven smiths to form blade for the hunters who survived the Pack Hunt.

Those blades aren't forged anymore, haven't been for centuries. But the original Rimeglass blades have been passed down for generations, and many of them are wielded by the warriors of Fenris to be feared by man and mage alike. Recently though, as the serpentine mines of the north have grown deeper and deeper, naturally occurring Rimeglass has been found. Though it does not hold the same cultural significance or luster as the crystals gifted from the Heavenspeak, its harder than steel properties have found use by the people of Fenris. Dwarven laborers use it for picks and hammers to easily carve away at the land, smiths chip it down into small munitions to be fired by their primitive firearms, and even more recently, the duchy of Fenris have began to reinforce their castle walls with slaps of this blue crystalline material.

Mages of Tempestua's other regions have come to despise the North for finding abundance of this material due to its capability of nullifying the effects of magic and snuffing out aura should it wound you. Researchers in Luxu's Mage Academy have attributed Rimeglass to being the reason that most northborn individuals lack the aptitude to perform magic. They theorize that some naturally occurring phenomenon within the ice mountains saps the land and all of its living people of their aura which seemingly prevented them from utilizing magic at any capacity. But northmen know that magic doesn’t necessarily need to be what the mages and sorcerers foreign to their land know it to be.

Holidays.
Estra Eve - Velpia 1. The first day of the year, celebrated by everyone. Artificial rain is typically created by mages if it's not raining naturally. Decorative umbrellas are made and sold while people are encouraged to attend festivals.

Founding Day - Velpia 45: The day of Tempestua's founding by King Alder. Memorabilia of King Alder is sold, statues of him are decorated and celebrations are had around them. In Luxu the nobles have a banquet at the Mage King's castle on this day and gifts are given to the current royalty. There are reenactments of the land's founding played out in many of the major cities, with boats landing on the shore, mages using their magic to raise some of the city cities, and the battle with the elves.

First Fire - Fumaria 5: The hottest day of the year in Tempestua, and despite that, citizens light their torches and dance around bonfires to celebrate the ceremonial roots of the Western Tribe. Fire was the form that the spirits they once spoke to took, and while the culture of times past has long disappeared, they still remember to cherish the flame that brought prosperity to their land.

Eaglesong - Fumaria 30: A day in celebration to the founder god Rakan. Golden Eagles native to the west are brought from their roosts, fed, and idols of them are praised in Rakan's name. The Mage King will often bring some of the royal eagles cloaked in magic of flame or raw aura and set them loose to fly throughout Tempestua, their flight leaves what seems to be small twinkling stars in the sky for citizens to stare in awe at.

Daublad - Decidia 1: An ancient holiday celebrating the death of nature so that new growth could take root. It is mostly celebrated by north and eastmen, but the dwarves have come to celebrate it in recent years as well. Dead leaves and branches are collecting from the shedding of trees and brush to be gathered in large masses for woodcutters to break down and process them for what can be used. The remnants are then placed at the center of a town or city before being set aflame whilst people drink and remember their deceased love ones. The ashes are then collected the morning after to be used for ink that is only to be used for ceremonial purposes.

The Old Path.
A belief system centered around worshipping the land and the old spirits that live within it. While there aren't necessarily any deities that are mentioned in the Old Path, specific landmarks or natural wonders of the earth itself were once communed with; examples of this would be the Heavenspeak, the Mother Tree in the Rootlands, or the submerged remnants of the super volcano known by some as the First Fire.

Founder Gods. These are deities brought to Tempestua with the Mage King and his followers. There are four of them: Rakan the Sunspeaker, Niss the Allmother, Kuron the Earthshaper, and Yora the Stormsinger. Rakan symbology comes in the form of birds, the sun, or a spear engulfed in flames. Niss symbology comes in the form of a deer, a wreathe of branches, or sometimes a scythe. Kuron symbology comes in the form of a ram, mountains or stone, and a gauntlet wielding a hammer. Yora symbology comes in the form of an orca eating a fish typically and is often placed on the sails of ships.

”What did you see?”

Davon was staring silently at the blank white wall on the other side of the room, unmoving and quiet as he sorted through his thoughts, chaotic as they were. Of the myriad of voices competing for space in his head, two remained the loudest. The first contemplated his rather short experience with death and the curiosity of it. He had died, he was sure. He’d been told as much by those present when he returned. And although he could not remember or recall the time of his passing or what it was like, he knew full well what he had been made to witness afterward was no normal vision. An experience he could best describe as a dream in which he was fully aware but could not exert any influence on. A lucid dream, he tried to tell himself, even as it had at the time felt much more like a prison. The line between reality and fiction, past and present, had been so thoroughly blurred, it was as if it had never existed at all. He could not tell in the moment when the real world came to an end and the dream began or if there was ever a difference between the two. And at the end of it all, he was left with little more than what he could only assume was supposed to be a message. A message awash in impossible colors and tangled in a web of time he could not unravel, hiding a truth he was meant to understand.

The second voice described a simple wall opposite him. A solid white near perfect square bereft of any blemish. Standing sterile and immovable and bathed in the fluorescent light of the room. It was grounding, and for all the comfort that was to be had in the land of the living, he found himself an appreciation for the simplicity of a solid shape and a solid color. It was a quiet anchor, tethering him to the real world. He clung to it, for just under his eyes danced unending the chaotic noise gifted to him that threatened to pull him under once more.

”Davon. What did you see?”

He chewed his tongue, closed his eyes and tried to concentrate, carefully allowing some of that dream to return to him. He coaxed forward a sliver of the vision through a parted sea of noise and color and time and focused on one of the few constants. Maybe the only constant: Of all the things he’d seen, there was ever only one of her.

🝐

”There was a… a woman.”

”Mother?”

”No…” He shook his head but furrowed his brow as if he were unsure, because although he knew the woman was not their mother, there was a strange feeling of familiarity to her that confused him. ”...Uh. Not her but… I feel like I know her or… I have known her. For forever.” Again he shook his head knowing full well whatever he said, no matter how he spun it, wouldn’t make any sense. He continued nonetheless. ”I can’t quite make out her face but-”

Davon paused suddenly as he felt his still feeble grip on his mind begin to slip ever so slightly. The sliver he’d created in his mind’s eye through which he was carefully peering had cracked, and the information that poured through, all of which he still could not understand, created a wall of noise. It obfuscated the truth and made more difficult his attempt at seeing clearly the woman on the other side. He flinched but continued.

”I can see… pale skin and… bright, golden hair. There are slivers of silver light that... dance across her hair, the way light does when passing a candle… and behind her is the night sky but it’s different. It’s alive. The stars are moving. Crashing into each other and flinging themselves into the dark. I can see twisting galaxies, and spirals of an infinity of colors mixing together to create new colors, ones I’ve never seen before… and all of this… through her eyes... I see it.”

🜄🝐⟊’🜃🝉

Davon’s chin tilted up and his eyes slowly opened to reveal pupils rolled into the back of his head.

”I see it. Through her eyes. A dance. We dance. Across time. Across Space.”

”Davon?”

“Across a thousand deaths and a thousand lives. A thousand stars sparked between our touch. Between our fingers.”

🜉🜁🜇🝗🜂🜒

“Woven. Intricate. Sheathed in the wrath of a supernova.”

”Davon!”

“I.________________________________________________Stopped.

________________________Never.________________________________________________________________________Searching.”

Dina grabbed his hand, interrupting his dream and pulling him violently back to reality. His eyes rolled forward as his head snapped upright, and all the color and noise violating his senses fell away, replaced with the white wall across from him.

”Davon. What the fuck. What the fuck was that?,” she asked. She watched him steady his breath and shake his head. When he finally turned away from the wall to look at her, she knew he’d see her horrified expression, but she could also see the exhaustion in his. He’d been out for a few days and was no doubt well rested and yet, it was as if the small episode had taken its toll on him. He looked as though he hadn't slept in days.

”I don’t know. I want to say it’s a message and I want to say that every test pilot before me probably got the same message, but for whatever reason, I’m the only one that message didn’t immediately kill. I don’t know why. All I can tell you for sure is that since then, I’m aware of this weight in my chest. A feeling... like a want or a need that I've had for a long time."

“It's strange. I can't tell if it's really my want or need, but I do know that whatever it is, it feels... possessive. Like whatever belonged it... or to me... whatever it was or is, I want it back.”

”Zero-one. This is Javelin. Cargo check.”

    ”Check.”

”We are… two mikes out from the drop. Winds are steady going two-seven-zero at fifteen knots.”

    ”Copy that, Javelin. Window?”

”Window is good. Drop zone green. Sending final target. Please confirm.”

Davon's eyes snapped to the translucent window that appeared in the empty space in front of him, the edges of which framed in thin light Enuan coastline. Near the shore over a space of open water was a visible red marker, roughly a mile away from shore, indicating where he was meant to deploy. The plan was to drop in hard and fast with the hope that a quick insertion and approach by water would help to delay his detection, though ‘delay’ was a stretch. Shodea intervention was inevitable, he knew, as he was sure they’d be alerted to his presence shortly after the drop. The aircraft too would be picked up on approach if it hadn’t been already. Despite the airspace it was currently operating in technically being neutral, their projected path was highly irregular and took them too close to the shore of the foreign continent to be ignored. It alone would solicit a swift response from Shodea. The nation's defense apparatus and response systems were, afterall, robust and had been a veritable thorn in the side of every war room assembly that, to the day, continued to seek more efficient means to penetrate it with a large force. Not to mention there was the oracle herself.

Davon knew he could rely on the element of surprise for only so long before the entire nation was brought down upon him. Even less time given they too would have been alerted to the destruction of the fishing village. He could only hope that he’d have enough time to do what he needed and that Shodea would see his arrival on their shores as nothing less than altruistic, even as a part of him was hard pressed to believe they'd believe him.

    ”Drop confirmed,” Davon replied.

The image flickered and disappeared, casting Davon back into the familiar dim light of the pilot’s bay, the muted sounds of a turbulent airstream and the trembling cage of metal wrapped around him his only indication that he and the aircraft he was attached to were still moving. It was in this isolation where he spent the majority of the flight, suspended as he was within a metal dome near its center, the boundary of which was described by the hexagonal panels stitched together by azonite ingots. Davon himself was restrained within a ‘cradle’, or so they called it; a frame of metal tracing behind his arms and legs and where at the end were placed his hands and feet into a device that read complicated inputs. Attached to his back via a series of thick straps and buckles was a fitted brace, also metal, that looped up and under his inner thighs. It was here where the majority of his weight was supported and was also where the most important connection between himself and the frame was made.

The system, by which the majority of the pilot’s input and vitals were collected, remained light weight without sacrificing durability. And while Davon was appreciative of its ability to replicate to near perfection almost the entire range of his physical movement, he did not appreciate what he had to give for it. Lining the interior of the brace were a series of thin needles, one of which was inserted into a miniscule hole in the base of his neck. While the pain alone was intense but ultimately something Davon had eventually gotten used to, the invasion of his mind, which was facilitated by this needle, was not so easily welcomed, especially considering he was already sharing that space with something else.

Davon was never alone in his thoughts, even cocooned as he was within that carefully woven tapestry of metal and machinery. He had learned early on that the space he inhabited was not one of privacy and the moment he stepped foot within the frame, the moment that needle slid into the back of his neck, was the moment a hundred watchful eyes turned to him. Each pair of eyes were silent spectators in the dark. Each one measuring his vitals or recording everything he saw. Each one rifling through lines of code and a never ending feed of data to find the story of him as he was in that moment. But as numerous as they were, there was only one that left Davon feeling uneasy and it was the only one he knew did not belong to Aventhal. This other, more complicated entity, remained apart from the rest. It intertwined its probing with Davon’s thoughts, twisting its voice with his ideas and fears and threading them into whispers that echoed endlessly within that dark chamber. It painted for him a picture in his mind’s eye across an ever chaotic canvas; a forever retelling of that nightmarish vision from before.

By now he’d gotten much better at parsing through the noise of color and sound and in time he was able to interpret some of what this voice was trying to say. It was no longer like it had been before, where flashes of lights and colors smashed into each other in the most chaotic and vivid of dreams. Now instead, it was as if he were looking through a pinhole at another life, snippets of which were given to him but never the full picture. Like stills they were, burning themselves into his memories until they persisted even when he closed his eyes. And it was here where he found his unease, for as these memories persisted, the more difficult it became for him to distinguish them apart from his own past. These memories, whether real or a part of some other ‘thing’s’ dream, were being carved into him. Images of a person, or more specifically a woman, who had become an unmistakable weight in his chest. Like a thread that was drawn between himself and her that had been pulled tight. In every message, in every dream, she was undoubtedly the most vivid part of it.

”Zero-one. One mike out to drop. Final check.”

    ”Stand by, Javelin.”

Davon pressed down on the pedals beneath his feat and jammed the controls in his hands fully forward and back, eliciting an immediate response from the cradle and the surrounding dome. What had once been opaque panels flashed a bright white as each one began initialization. Shortly after, each panel changed from a blinding white to the hexagonal window through which the Western edge of the Sundered Sea could be seen. Stretched out far below Davon was an expanse of familiar blue pressed against the jagged green edge that was Enuan coastline. Each tile together created a near 360° field of view, blocked only by the nephilim’s own structure above, below and directly behind the pilot. The cradle beneath Davon lurched forward and tilted slightly back to adjust for the frame’s currently horizontal position. It too began to press into Davon’s feet and hands providing some feedback that he adjusted for. In short time, he acclimated to the resistance and could feel, through tactile feedback, the push of the air stream and the pull of gravity on the nephilim frame itself. Finally, he pressed a series of buttons in the controls in his hands and the in the empty space surrounding him between himself and the dome, test flashes of light and text appeared and then disappeared. A small visual test ensuring the display matrix system Davon was suspended inside of was working as intended.

    "Final check complete."

”Copy, Zero-one. Thirty seconds to drop. Stand by.”

    "Initializing matrix and standing by."

    🝐

...No. You can stay the fuck out of my head right now...

Davon ignored the familiar probing and activated his UI. The empty space around him began to populate with walls of text and data. Everything from his current altitude to the integrity of the hull to his currently available levels of power and remaining repair systems. There was a number floating in the bottom right of his periphery indicating the estimated time-of-arrival of his closest ARM. Should he deem it necessary, he could have one delivered in short time to his position, though he was sure there would be no need to carry on him so destructive a weapon.

    ”Fifteen seconds.”

    🜄🝐⟊’🜃🝉

This time, the other voice did not ask, ignoring Davon’s protest and assaulting his senses with visions of what was now a familiar dream yet again, though it was changed somewhat. What had previously been a darkened sky, crowded by the lights of a million stars, was now clear. Replaced by a soft blue sky dotted in sparse cloud cover that drifted under the light of an unseen sun. The woman from before was here again too, still rooted to the same spot she was, though her eyes were no longer obscured. Clear as they were now, their true color was visible to Davon as a beautiful pale purple. It was a hue was sure he’d never seen before, save from one very distinct individual. There was no mistaking the features of the woman standing tall before him, but seeing her now in his mind's eye left him with an uneasy feeling. Her eyes, beautiful as they were, were no longer looking through him to something else, parsing the horizon for something known only to her. They instead remained fixed on him. Seeing him. Watching him. A gaze that saw all leaving him exposed.

He realized in that moment that his fears had been founded. Of all of the layers of defensive measures Shodea brought to bear in defense of her kingdoms, it was the enigmatic Oracle herself that was the first to detect his arrival. Or perhaps she'd known all along and Aventhal had sent the heir to their kingdom into the house of the enemy blind.

    ”Drop!”

The pins holding the nephilim frame to the aircraft were released. Gravity pushed down on Davon's chest, slamming him into the cradle. He felt his stomach turn in his abdomen and his chest tighten.

Dina crossed the busy room toward the holographic display floating in the center. Standing next to it was a man, well into his sixties, who was staring intently at images and lengths of text floating above the Enuan projection. Despite his age, he stood tall and intent, and despite the relatively busy air of the room surrounding him, remained focused and presentable. Each strand of short white air on his head remained exactly where he had placed it. Every seam and fold and thread describing the shape of the man’s dress was deliberate, neat and clean. He too stood with a purpose with hands clasped firmly behind him and his body almost completely still as he scoured every bit of data he was presented, only allowing his head to move on a stiff swivel. Dina could feel the attention the man commanded and the decorum he remained committed to, something that felt somehow tangible in the air in any room he he was in. She also knew well the man’s exploits and fully understood the power the man commanded at his station and the strength of wisdom the man possessed. It was no wonder he led Aven's military and was selected to oversee the first official deployment of their Nephilim.

”Sir Emerick,” she began, stopping next to him and looking over the recreation of a coastline a thousand miles away. ”How are we doing?”

”Lady Asmodan. Things are proceeding smoothly, though what we’ve discovered so far is troubling.” He waved to the side some of the information in the air and pulled to the front images that were recently taken. In it, Talour’s suffering was made abundantly clear. Infrastructure was destroyed, either burned or toppled to the ground, and there were bodies left lying in the streets. So far, at least from the town itself, there were no obvious signs of who or what could have been responsible for the attack. It also became obvious that whoever or whatever was responsible sowed destruction aimlessly, destroying and killing without prejudice. It read as an attack on Talour, sure, but it also seemed too absolute. Too exacting simply for the sake of it. It did not make sense as there was nothing to gain, strategically or otherwise, from razing the small town.

Off to the side separated just so from the other images was another, not of Talour, but of a peculiar shape pressed into a large patch of dirt.

    ”What is that?”

    ...No idea...

Davon stared down at the shape in the ground; a very distinct outline of what appeared to be a footprint of sorts, at least that's what he assumed it had to be. There was nothing else that could have made such an indent. Left by some creature that he was convinced was the culprit of the attack though as it stood, neither he nor anyone from Aventhal had been able to identify the creature the print belonged to. And it wasn’t for a lack of knowledge. Databases from both countries on the wider world’s fauna were thorough and meticulously kept and had been for years. Their catalogues spanned centuries of research, collected and collaborated across multiple peoples and yet there was no match to what they had discovered. Not even close. Not in Aventhal’s records nor what they themselves recorded from the pieces of Shodea’s knowledge bank they’d glimpsed. And it wasn’t just the shape that was peculiar, but what they could only assume was the beast’s size. Comparable creatures did not dwell on land.

    🜃⟊’🜁

Davon scanned another set of prints following the first and eyed the path it took through a swathe of forest ahead. The trees seemed to have been pushed to the side and those inbetween had been trampled.

    ”CAPCOM, Zero-one."

    "Go, Zeron-one.

"The tracks are leading away from the village. Still no signs of any survivors. I can push further inland, but I am approaching Shodea territory.”

Inside the dome and visible only to Davon was a translucent red demarcation wall that marked the official boundary between neutral and occupied land, less than a mile away from his current position. It wasn’t a physical wall, but it was very easily visible so there was no mistaking where Davon could and could not go, though the point was mostly moot given his presence would already be an issue. Generally speaking, all of Enuan was seen as belonging to Shodea as the balance of power weighed so heavily in the nation’s favor that any villages or towns lying in the outskirts could not object to their rule even if they were opposed. Him remaining outside the 'official' boundary would mean little and sticking to the proposed plan was the only way they could possibly explain his presence.

    ”Is pursuit advised?”

    ”Standby, Zero-one.”

    ”Standing by.”

Davon relaxed on the controls and took a moment, one of many he’d already taken, to observe his surroundings. More accurately, he was admiring a rare sight indeed for those who called his half of the world home. Standing well above the surrounding tree lines, though the various hills and mountains surrounding him did obscure much of his line of sight, what he could see was beautiful. Sunkissed lands swept in the deepest shades of green and mountain tops that struck at the sky and glinted in sharp light as the sun reflected snowcapped spires. They had nothing of the sort back home where he and others had to find the beauty hidden away beneath a surface of unforgiving land scarred by the wind. Seas of dust that swallowed whole fields in its shadow, scrubbing away what life clung desperately to the rocks and dirt. Where Aventhal hid her treasures, Shodea had it in abundance and gave it freely to her children. The black silhouette of his nephilim, struck against the hill he stood on was an insult to the land itself, he was sure, and a part of him hated himself for it. Another part of him remembered why he was in the frame in the first place. The real reason why he was here, standing on fertile ground that did not belong to him. Why he was searching between the trees for any survivors from Talour with whom he might convene.

As luck would have it, movement, captured by his frames UI, was detected only a hundred or so yards from his position. Something small was scrambling through the brush off to the side of the path Davon had been following. He immediately began moving toward it, being careful to navigating his frame over and through the canopy of trees in an effort to limit the damage to the environment left from moving so massive a machine through it. As he approached, his frame was able to map out a rough shape of the target, generated from its intermittently visible heat signature as it continued to move. It was a human. A child.

”CAPCOM. Be advised. I believe I’ve found a survivor. It looks to be a child. Moving to intercept.”

"Copy that, Zero-one. Command also advises to steer clear of the border after retrieval of the child. Do not pursue the 'unknown' further inland. It is no longer our problem."

    "Solid copy."

It only took Davon a couple of steps to close the gap between himself and the child, but as he approached, he became aware of the fact that despite his intention being rescue, whoever it was down there would not see it as such. As far as they were probably concerned, Davon and the massive machine he was in was there to finish the job. Not to mention, this was officially the first time a Nephilim frame had been deployed anywhere other than around its home base. There was a good chance that someone from a small fishing town had never seen or even heard of one before, especially a child. Some amount of caution and care would have to be taken to retrieve the person.

Before moving any closer, Davon activated the frame’s PA system.

”Do not be afraid, I am here to help,” he’d tried to say, though the nephilim’s voice modulation system altered his intended tone. What came out was deep and menacing, mechanical and heavy in the air as the manufactured voice vibrated nearby trees and rocks. The sound that resonated off the face of the nearby mountain was significantly less than pleasant. Despite this, Davon tried a second time with little to no change. The child, understandably, refused to acknowledge him or his message, choosing instead to run. They clambered over felled logs and across jagged rocks and continued moving ever closer to the Shodea demarcation line.

Davon shook his head. He could not afford to be patient. There was too much at stake and too much he didn’t know and the sooner he could find the answers to his questions, the better. He had to retrieve the child before they crossed the boundary. ”Fuck this.”

Davon reached down with the blade of the frame’s hand, driving the edge into the dirt just ahead of the child and carefully scooping them up along with a large handful of earth. Taking extra care not to move too quickly or shift the mound of dirt around in his palm, lest the child be buried and crushed or suffocated, he brought them up to his chest some 100 feet or so above the ground so they could speak clearly face to face. He was met with the unbridled scream of a terrified little girl, frozen in the center of his open fist and having curled into her knees with her arms pinned to either side of her head. She refused to look up at him, or rather the 'face' of his nephilim.

Davon noticed that attached to a lock of hair on the back of her head was a peculiar looking trinket of sorts: a sliver of pale white material that looked like the splinter of a bone. It shimmered in the light of the sun, throwing glints of silver in the air and reflecting it into the girl’s hair. It was not unlike the glow of silver in the hair of the woman trapped in his visions.

Davon pulled free his right hand and reached between his legs where under the brace was an emergency lever meant to open the pilot’s deck. Pulling down on it with enough force would open the canopy, allowing him to see the girl with his own eyes and more importantly, allow the girl to see him. The face plate attached to the head of the frame hissed gas from a now exposed seam before pulling away from the cavity within and sliding vertically up. Behind it, the truth of the massive machine she found herself in the clutches of was revealed to her: beneath the metal and mystery of the towering giant before her, there was nothing more than a man underneath.

”It’s alright, it’s alright! You’re safe! You don’t have to be afraid,” he called out to her over the sound of the wind and her sobbing. ”I’m here to rescue you!”

The sobbing stifled some and the girl tentatively turned her head just enough to peer at him through the fold in her arm. Davon could see clearly, even from under her cowered position, the stains on her flushed cheeks and the fear in her eyes. He could only imagine what she must have been through and what must be going through her mind now, suspended as she was in the air and in the hand of a giant. Any other time he’d move to console the girl, but he could not so easily remove himself manually from the brace he was attached too, only to then immediately climb back in. It was too dangerous to exit the frame in this way when there was still danger lurking, so he would have to resign himself to what distant comfort he could provide.

”Can you tell me what happened?”

The girl, now trying to fight back the tears still bubbling under her eyes, remained silent for a moment before yelling out a reply. ”W-who are you?!”

”My name is Davon. I am a prince sent here to help. But for me to do that, I need to know what happened here.”

”A prince?!” She yelled again in disbelief. She was no longer openly sobbing, but was still having to throw her voice over the wind that swept easily across the top of the canopy below them.

”Yes, Prince Davon Asmodon. What is your name?”

The girl finally raised her head and wiped some of the tears from her eyes before answering again. The pale white trinket in her hair danced wildly in the wind. ”Niah!”

”Niah. A beautiful name for a strong girl, and a brave one at that for seeking shelter in the forest.” The hand where the girl was perched moved once again, lifting her slightly higher and little closer to the open cavity of the nephilim’s head. The suddenness of it caught the girl off guard and she stumbled a bit but didn’t hide away, instead bracing her weight and finding her balance until the hand stopped and she was now standing before her mysterious savior. ”Listen Niah. I need your help. I need you to be brave for a little while longer, okay? Can you tell me what happened? Can you tell me who… or what did this?”

Niah rubbed at her eyes and nodded. ”It took papa.”

    ”It did? What did?”

    ”The monster.”

”Can you tell me what the monster looked like?”

    🜃⟊’🜁

Before she could answer, without warning, the canopy of the nephilim frame slammed shut between them. It resealed itself, isolating Davon from the outside world before he could react or even register what was happening. Through the dome, he could see clearly the surprise in Niah’s eyes and watched as that surprise turned to horror when she noticed something moving behind Davon. Before Davon could see what it was for himself, a sound, like the crack of thunder, erupted within the pilot deck as something slammed into him from behind. Immediately, the dome flooded with red light as multiple critical alert messages appeared in the empty space around him, each one indicating a failure in a number of systems and subsystems while the more important ones indicated catastrophic damage to the frame’s center mass. Sure enough, when Davon looked down at the belly of his nephilim, he noticed an appendage, one he'd never seen before, protruding through a ruptured metal abdominal plate. The barbed tip had pierced clean through him, compromising reinforced azonite metal as if it were paper and throwing chunks of debris into the surrounding forest and hills.

As the appendage attempted to pull back through the hole it created, the barbed tip dug itself further into Davon's already destroyed armor, further damaging it and before latching onto it as well as bone buried itself into the surrounding metal. Davon closed both hands protectively over the little girl just as he felt himself being taken to the ground.

It was a quiet anchor, tethering him to the real world and he found himself clinging to it. For just under his eyes danced unending the chaotic noise gifted to him.

”There was a… a woman.”

”Mother?”

”No…”He shook his head but furrowed his brow as if he were unsure, because although he knew the woman was not their mother, there was a strange feeling of familiarity to her that confused him. ”...Uh. Not her but… I feel like I know her or… I have known her. For forever.” Again he shook his head knowing full well whatever he said, no matter how he spun it, it wouldn’t make any sense.

It’s alive. The stars moving. Crashing into each other and flinging themselves into the dark. I can see twisting galaxies, spirals spinning endlessly and an infinity of colors mixing together to create new colors, ones I’ve never seen before… and all of this… through her eyes… I see it. Through her eyes.”

Davon’s chin tilted up and his eyes slowly opened to reveal pupils rolled into the back of his head.

”A dance. We dance. Across time. Across Space.”

”Davon?”

“Across a thousand deaths and a thousand lives. A thousand stars sparked between our touch. Between our fingers.”

“Woven. Intricate. Sheathed in the wrath of a supernova.”

”Davon!”

“I. Never. Stopped. Searching.”

Dina grabbed his hand, interrupting his dream and pulling him violently back to reality. His eyes rolled forward as his head snapped upright, and all the color and noise violating his senses fell away, replaced with the white wall across from him.

”Davon. What the fuck. What the fuck was that?,” she asked, watching him blink, take a steady breath and shake his head. When he finally turned away from the wall to look at her, she knew he’d see her horrified expression, but she could also see the exhaustion in his. Although he’d been out for a few days and was no doubt expected to be well rested, it was as if the small episode had taken its toll on him.

”I don’t know. I want to say it’s a message and I want to say that every test pilot before me probably got the same message, but for whatever reason, I’m the only one that message didn’t immediately kill. I don’t know why. All I can tell you for sure is that since then, I’m aware of this weight in my chest. It feels like it’s been there for a long time and it feels like a want… or a need. I’m not sure. And I’m not sure whether or not it’s my want or need.”

“I do know it feels more possessive. That whatever belonged to it… whatever belongs to me. I want it back.”

PART ONE
Tab basics.

This was made possible by changes implemented to our bbcode within the past couple of months. I want to reiterate that updates are ongoing so this may not work tomorrow, next month or maybe it'll be around for a few years before it's made obsolete.

This trick takes advantage of two things: Hider functionality and the removal of the horizontal scroll bar. The scroll bar used to pop up when elements of a post bled beyond the page boundary. There were a few reasons this happened, both accidental and intentional, but it was meant to allow users on any device see the content that was pushed out of bounds. As a note, this still happens in specific areas of the website such as in PMs, post previews on user's bios and the editing UI.

Because it was removed, anything pushed beyond the border of the page remains hidden, and because opening a hider is instantaneous, this trick creates the illusion that you're swapping a tab. So, how do we make one?

We'll start by recreating the basic mechanic and worry about making it look pretty later on. Let's simply start with our first tab.

TAB ONE

Now we want a hider. Code looks like this:

[hider=][/hider]TAB ONE

Note that removing the '=' will create a hider button with the word 'hider' in it. The '=' with no text in front of it creates a button with just the '+'. You can add text after the '=', but you'll have to adjust the rest of your tab to compensate, so leaving it empty is easiest. The above code gives:

TAB ONE

So obviously opening that hider doesn't do anything right now except push our tab down some. What we want to do is push the tab to the right. We can do this by putting our hider and our tab into separate cells of a table.

[table][row][cell][hider=][/hider][/cell][cell]TAB ONE[/cell][/row][/table]

Now we have:

TAB ONE

Opening and closing our hider now pushes the tab horizontally. All we need to do now is add a solid line into the hider which will determine how far we want to move our tab. We would typically hide this with '2e2c2c' color tag, but I'll be leaving it visible for now.

Code will look like this:

[table][row][cell][hider=]__________________________[/hider][/cell][cell]TAB ONE[/cell][/row][/table]

And you get this:

TAB ONE

With a long enough line, our tab will fall off the edge of the page.

TAB ONE

Now, to roughly complete our optical illusion, we can add our second tab, this time into the hider.

I'm doing a simple line break above the solid line before adding in our text and I'll also be hiding our line with a '2e2c2c' color tag:

[table][row][cell][hider=]TAB TWO
[color=2e2c2c]
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________[/color][/hider][/cell][cell]TAB ONE[/cell][/row][/table]

TAB ONE

And now our text is jumping around, but, at its most basic, this is tab switching. Congrats! You did it!

PART TWO
Tab refining. Step one.

Now lets start making it actually look like its not a bbcode accident and something we're proud of. As you probably notice, our two tabs are nowhere near each other and when compared to the tab I used to create the title of this guide, it doesn't snap-swap™ the same way.

There are a number of ways we can solve this issue but it mostly comes down to where you want your tab to be and what you're swapping. The general idea is to have your two tabs lined up so that the swap is clean and makes some amount of sense. Since this isn't a character sheet or post template, we just have an empty canvas with no direction. So, let's pick a spot. Left aligned?

If you notice our base tab, our text is in the center. That's because it's in a table's cell and subject to its formatting rules. We'll have to add weight to the cell it's in to make it more flush to the left wall. Also remember that the hider button we're using is in its own cell as well. We will not be able to get fully flushed with the wall as there is an entire table cell between our text and the page border.

Below is our code. You'll see that I've copied and pasted the line we created earlier into the first tab with a line break putting it below the text that reads 'TAB ONE':

[table][row][cell][hider=]TAB TWO[color=2e2c2c]__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________[/color][/hider][/cell][cell]TAB ONE
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________[/cell][/row][/table]

The above will look like this:

TAB ONE
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

That line moves priority to the right cell. It's unreasonably long because the table will try to keep things as balanced as possible until it absolutely cannot anymore, resulting in our text inching ever closer to our hider button with decreasing returns until our line is long enough to break beyond the page border. You can clearly seeing it running off the edge, but because I'll be covering it up with the '2e2c2c' color tag, it won't be a problem.

You'll see that it's also positioned above our text on the second tab and to the right. We can fix one of these issues fairly easily with a technique we've used before. However, be aware that things will begin to look a little convoluted from here on out as we'll be dealing with tables nested within tables.

To ensure we're moving the entire tab and not just the text by itself, we'll need to put 'TAB TWO' into its own table. I will also hide the second line that was added in the last step.

[table][row][cell][hider=][table][row][cell][/cell][cell]TAB TWO
[color=2e2c2c]__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________[/color][/cell][/row][/table]
[/hider][/cell][cell]TAB ONE
[color=2e2c2c]__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________[/color][/cell][/row][/table]

In the cell to its left, we'll add [sub] tags and ellipses. Just like in my text box guide, these will be used to adjust our tab horizontally.

[table][row][cell][hider=][table][row][cell][sub][sub][sub][sub][sub]...[/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub][/cell][cell]TAB TWO
[color=2e2c2c]__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________[/color][/cell][/row][/table][/hider][/cell][cell]TAB ONE
[color=2e2c2c]__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________[/color][/cell][/row][/table]

Here it what we have so far:

TAB ONE
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

PART THREE
Tab refining. Step Two.

We now arrive at the tricky part. We need to adjust TAB ONE vertically to bring it closer to TAB TWO, but if were to simply add invisible text above it, it will either come up short or over shoot it and the two would not line up. Luckily, there is a fix that exists that works to push objects vertically in the same way we use [sub] tags and ellipses to push objects horizontally. However, this fix is not so simply put together.

What this trick entails is the use of glitched bbcode behavior that happens when you add a [sub] tag to an entire table. By subbing a table and then further subbing text inside it, text placed on individual line breaks will slowly push the boundary of a table down.

Here is what that code looks like:

[sub][table][row][cell][sub][/sub][/cell][/row][/table][/sub]

When bordered, here is the result:

If I were to remove the center [sub] tags and enter two lines of text, they end up looking like this:

This is an example of the weird
sub-table glitch behavior.

Subbing the contents inside and adding a few line breaks (with text on each line, in this case a period) will separate the two.

This is an example of the weird
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
sub-table glitch behavior.

And this is the behavior we will be taking advantage of to make minor adjustments to our tab. For the next few steps, I will keep this table bordered so you can see it at work.

We will be taking the above code, with text removed, and adding it to our cell holding TAB ONE, placing it above the text.

[table][row][cell][hider=][table][row][cell][sub][sub][sub][sub][sub]...[/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub][/cell][cell]TAB TWO
[color=2e2c2c]__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________[/color][/cell][/row][/table][/hider][/cell][cell][sub][table][row][cell][sub][/sub][/cell][/row][/table][/sub]
TAB ONE
[color=2e2c2c]__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________[/color][/cell][/row][/table]

So far we have this:

TAB ONE
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Next, we begin adding in periods on individual lines.

[table][row][cell][hider=][table][row][cell][sub][sub][sub][sub][sub]...[/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub][/cell][cell]TAB TWO
[color=2e2c2c]__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________[/color][/cell][/row][/table][/hider][/cell][cell][sub][table][row][cell][sub].

PART FOUR
Tabbed character sheets.

So what can you do with tabs? Alternating characters sheets are a good start and fairly easy to implement with our established code depending on which way it's leaning.

Below, I've begun plugging in all the elements of a basic CS and have stopped where there is a problem. Here are the bits of code I've added, highlighted, and the result below it:

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

As a small summary, I've added more text, an image, and a solid line beneath that image that acts as a 'skeleton' for the cell it is in, preventing that cell from collapsing on our image. Images do not add weight to a cell and are taken over by other cells that have text in them.

As you can see, the body of our text is running off the page because the width of the cell it is in is currently defined by the obscenely long line we placed. That line's original job was to push our tab as far left as possible to make it flush with the page boundary. Although that boundary has moved, it's still doing its job, but now it's also affecting our body of text. Because we still want to maintain the same alignment, we can keep that line but move it to its own cell within the same row. We then add a 'skeleton' into the cell holding our text, ensuring it is not crushed by the weight of the cells flanking it.

I will also be adjusting the left and right position of TAB TWO since it seems to be slightly off.

Here is what our changes will look like and the result below. New lines visible:

With the new lines, you can control the width of the body of your text. Remember to copy and paste it into both cells (and hide it) so that they are the same width.

At this point, you can treat each tab as an empty page and expect it to follow all the usual bbcode rules. Which means, I can take the text box code we worked on earlier and plug it directly into our tab code with minimal adjusting.

What I will do is take the following:

And combine it with the tabbed character sheet we just finished. The following is the full code break down showing where I've removed flanking cells from the text box code that helped define the text box's position, and replaced the content within each tab with the text box code itself:

PART FIVE
Other tab techniques.

What else can you do? How about the reverse? It may sound difficult, but if you think about it, all you're doing is creating two of the same CSs, images and all, for both tabs and changing only the elements you want to on the second. Adjustments may be necessary, the most notable of which for the following was the addition of a sub/table glitch tool above the right image on the first tab to help move it down into place.

I think you get the general idea. There's a lot of neat visual tricks you can do with this, much more than what I've done here I'm sure. Good luck with making your own and again, feel free to reply here or DM me questions.

Final note, especially for those like me that care about things being a pixel off. The notice at the top and bottom of every page that indicates if a user or guest is viewing the same page as you, has an effect on the vertical position of table elements. That goes for anything that relies on accurate positioning, not just tabs. The examples here and the tabs I make personally account for that notification being present. It's usually there to let you know that you yourself are viewing the page so I figured usually, it'll be visible for others.

If elements of your tabs or table are moving up and down vertically ever so slightly, check to see if that notification is visible. If it is not, you can refresh and it'll show up.
