Finley felt a little sad as the moths left. She hated the feeling that filled her from there. Her Lady was coming. She did not want that. If the Lady called to her, she would follow. Her escape to the human world had been narrow. A loophole. But if the Lady herself showed up and demanded Finley return, she could not say no. It would be like telling the sun to stop lighting the day. Someone may have the power to do that, but Finley did not.

All of that was washed away as Callaghan picked them up and bloody lips met their own. Fear was washed back in the tide that was the memories that came to them. Finley’s experience of the memories was as if she was Callaghan. They became him for a while. Sinking into those memories. It was the warmth of a world so vastly different from their own, and they loved it.

They loved Callaghan for sharing it with them. This was an intimacy that went beyond almost any other Finley had ever experienced; only their permanent connection with Dysphoria went deeper. As Callaghan shifted, becoming their draconic form Finley giggled and sank more into the embrace. They now knew what that shifting felt like to Callaghan.

They caressed Callaghan’s side, following the ripple of his scales. Finley looked at the shadowy dragon creature. ”Is this something you can do?” They asked, very confused. This did not seem to match with anything Finley had ever seen Callaghan do previously. ”Or did your candy spur this? I suppose this is better than moths and the feeling of your Lady coming to collect you.” Finley suddenly got a very serious look on their face. ”Callaghan, if she does come and tells me I must go, know I am only doing it as my duty. I am not leaving you. My oldest oath is to her. It binds me tighter than you could imagine.” A different fear bubbled up behind. Could they keep a secret from their Lady?

”My full name is Constance, but only a few people call me that. I generally prefer Connie.” She smiled at Cassie. The girl seemed nervous still, and was definitely shaken by what she had seen.

”I would suggest that when secrets feel so dangerous to ignore them. This place, and the school, are not safe places. Often, secrets will consume you. Literally or figuratively. Hopefully, what you saw was just a hallucination and not an actual Truth.” Connie refrained from saying that sometimes, once a Truth was seen, there was no un-seeing it. Cassie would be lucky if she never saw whatever that had been again.

”How about you come sit back down, though? Or I can escort you back to your room.” Connie suggested. It would be a good excuse to leave before things got worse.

Andy had slipped in the mud. Mud was not very good at conducting electricity; if it were, she would have considered using it as a medium for her lighting. However, that didn't matter long anyway, as Leah pulled a large section of the mud toward herself.

Andy stood up and lashed out at where she thought Kate might be from when it had still been muddy. Kate had tried to attack her, but instinct had guided Andy; the mud had worked against Kate at that time. Lucky for Andy, not so lucky for Kate, her fist found Kate's nose. She heard the crunch of the bone. In quick succession, Andy punched Kate two more times. Neither was as solid as a hit, and the third carried lightning. She hoped it was doing some damage. Though it was unlikely to have been as damaging as her first hit.

7:00 AM - Friday, June 13th 1980 - Lava Lake trailhead, BC, Canada

The morning was cool and there was a slight mist in the air as the state vehicles, or in a few precious cases private cars, pulled up into the gravel lot. This lot had the trail head that would take the group of delinquents to the old camp grounds.

An older man, with a large pot belly, sun darkened skin, and well worn hiking boots waited for them at the trail head. He wore hiking appropriate clothes and dark sunglasses. He was probably in his 40s or 50s.

Once everyone had left the vehicles, gathered their packs and the cop had driven away, the older man introduced himself.

“I’m Dobbs.” He watched as the state vehicle’s dust started to settle. “This hike is long, if we do it quickly we should be at the campgrounds in about fourty-five minutes. No dilly-dallying, I have no desire to be here when the sun goes down.” He turned and started up the trail.

Emily didn’t have a car. They were expensive and the bus system, or her own two feet, were her usual mode of transportation. She probably could drive if push came to shove, but she had never gotten her license. Marco, also didn’t have his license, so the pair of them had been driven up to the trail head by the cop. He was stern and didn’t talk the whole drive. Em and Marco hadn’t talked much either because of how awkward it felt.

Getting out of the vehicle and pulling on the oversized hiking backpack Emily didn’t struggle much. She had done a few long hikes, and even a couple of overnight backpacking trips over the years. It was one of her favorite ways of seeing the country. It was why when she had been assigned this community service job she had put down that she had wilderness survival skills and lots of hiking experience.

She looked at the group and was surprised to see that Aster, Marco’s friend from UBC, was also there. Em nudged Marco, and nodded her head indicating where Aster was. He was driving a ridiculously ostentatious car. There was another car, a jeep, with a trio of people piling out. She didn’t know any of them. At least they were more sensible. Em was not surprised by Aster deciding to drive that car here. He would probably have a conniption fit once he realized it had dust on it.

”Aster really drove that thing all the way here. How much do you think he paid for gas?”

The man who introduced himself as Dobbs started hiking without much fanfare. Emily followed him, she had a little bit of a bounce in her step excited for a nice hike. She hoped that all this community service would at least be fun. If the others were cool she figured they’d make their own fun. They had a week until kids started showing up to get the campgrounds ready for them. Em had plans to do some scavenger hunts and neat hikes for the kids.

12:45 PM - Friday, July 18th, 2025 - Château de La Lune, France

The group of nominees headed out of the Château. There wasn’t a clear and defined path that Sam followed, but he had the screen shot of the aerial view of the island, and a general idea of where the church was. He had been there the night prior, but had used the basement tunnel access. The rain pattered down on umbrellas and jackets. Anyone not protecting themselves from the rain soon became uncomfortably wet. Though reaching the grove of trees that separated the house from the old monastery and graveyard reduced the rain some.

Eventually the group made it through the grove of trees and found themselves in the graveyard. Old decrepit stones marked grave sites. Most of the markers were unreadable. Whoever had been buried here was long lost to time. It was not obviously clear if any of the La Lunes were buried here.

Ralph had also been at the old church the previous night. However, during the daylight, and without lightning and thunder it was a more serene place. Ralph, the previous night, had been a little freaked out by the whole situation. Seeing it in the daylight though made him less scared. He did wonder why Sam had brought them here.

”I suppose this is as good as any other place to chat.” The church didn’t provide much cover from the rain, parts of it were long collapsed and even longer burned away. Ralph looked at Tony and Constance, pressed against each other, interesting. ”It was your idea for us all to chat. I agree it is a good idea. Rihanna and I learned some interesting things I think we should all talk about. First, though, I think we need to establish something important. I think Millicent’s bad vibes yesterday were on point. Something really weird is going on here. I for one am not involved in any of it, but it is a problem for me, just as much as I suspect it is for all of you. Whatever the award may be for or about isn’t as important as the stuff going on behind the curtain. I think we might all be in danger. Someone is trying to blackmail us. If you claim you’re not being blackmailed I am going to assume you’re in on it.”

Sam had been vague, but he had had a note. As long as everyone had a note and something resembling blackmail as far as Ralph was concerned they weren’t involved. There was a chance that wasn’t true, that whoever from the Château was involved had a second party among the nominees, but if that was true they as a whole group were doomed. Ralph had decided he was going to trust the other nominees at least this far.

”I’m not going to force anyone to admit what they are being blackmailed about, but at least tell us that you are being blackmailed. That you got a note among the welcome papers when we arrived.” He looked at everyone in the group and waited.

The re-forged team, Excelsior, had been up late the night prior. Not so late to mess with their sleep, but they had talked strategies. Andy still didn't care for banter. She was direct. Stopping this team's speedster was going to be important. He had already proved more adept at his task than the previous team's speedster. Tommy was also her nephew? God, her family tree had gotten weird.

Andy had experience fighting speedsters, including Tommy's uncle. That experience had taught her one key thing with fighting speedsters: It sucked. They were too fast for her to get a proper lock on to fight. But that didn't mean she couldn't learn how a certain speedster moved. She watched him longer than she wanted to, but eventually she found the perfect moment.

Andy lashed out, her fist connecting with Tommy, and lightning wreathed him. She was satisfied with the outcome of that. For now, Tommy wouldn't be an issue. He wasn't out of the fight, and she wasn't going to punch someone who literally couldn't fight back; she prepared for what to do next.

If Finley were a shapeshifter she would have turned into a pleased cat at that moment. The presence of both Dysphoria and Callaghan almost made them purr with delight. Callaghan’s bites were tantalizing. A reminder of nights before and hopes of nights to come. Their eyes though were not focused on Callaghan or Dys. Instead they focused on something beyond.

Fin wondered if the giant moth girl had somehow become tiny moths. Was she just a giant collection of moths? Was that normal? The moths seemed to be making a pattern. One Finley was uncertain they could decipher. Especially with the distraction that was Callaghan. There was some yelling but they paid little attention. Instead, focusing what part of their mind they could to the moths, the rest devoted to the feelings from Callaghan’s touches.

He was warm and that radiated through all their contact points. They lost track of what other things were happening.

”We like to share.” Finley said, ”We also enjoy more exclusive time.” Finley would be happy either way this evening could go.

Connie’s lips tightened as she covered a frown. People were starting to have negative reactions. The girl in pink was screaming about dead people. She stood up and went to her side, next to Jake.

”I can’t say for certain, but I believe you are hallucinating. I don’t see these dead people either. Hallucinations usually can’t hurt you. Take a deep breath, if it helps close your eyes and don’t look at them.” She shot a glare over to Barty and Nicholas. She hadn’t missed the surprise on Nicholas’ face. That implied far enough for Connie. Now she was going to be on damn babysitting duty until they started coming down off of whatever weird ass high this was.

”My name is Connie.” She introduced herself. Hoping that maybe she could distract the young woman from whatever horrors she was seeing.
