The walk back to the house was wet as the rain came down harder. Inside the house by the front door sat a stack of fresh towels. Felix had been aware of the group leaving. He had prepared for their return. One of the maids, Aurélia, was nearby, coming from the dining room as the first people returned. She gave them a shaky smile.

“Okay, Tony, Constance, and Sam will go find Jeanne. Millicent and Brandon will go find Elenore.” Ralph turned to speak directly to Rhi, as Tony left. “Ready?” Once Rhi confirmed he would start walking with her. “Who do you want to speak with?”

Ralph wasn’t confident they’d be able to get into the La Lune quarters. The door he had seen had been locked with a code. He wondered about the other family members. One of them, he thought Elizabeth had been in swimwear. Where had she gone? He still hadn’t seen Agatha. Geroge’s absent wife. Nathan had gone on the boat.

”Maybe, want to try to find Richard? Or George. They are the older men in the family. They might know something. Though we’d have to be careful about talking with Richard if he really is Renee’s father.”

The weather was nice. It warmed up as the sun rose more. Soon sounds of construction from Dobbs working on a cabin could be heard across the campground.

Emily caught the kiss that Marco blew at her. She pretended to eat it. ”See you.” She blew a kiss back at him. Then headed out to find Nancy. She found her quickly and easy enough.

”Ready to check this place out? I also want to see if there is any poison ivy. If there is, I need to mark it so kids don’t wander into it.” Em waved at Zeke.

”Oh, is that cabin open so we can put our bags down?” She asked him.

Unaware of the chaos and mess they had missed, Sunshine and Marrow reentered the Court of Two Sisters. Marrow had a hand loosely wrapped around her wife’s waist, the other partially tucked into the pocket of her jeans. Exposed bone spikes jutted out of her back, piercing through well worn holes in a dark leather jacket. On her hip, a chain belt dangled, and her steel toed boots were scuffed beyond saving. Her appearance was a sharp contrast to her wife’s attire - not by Sunshine’s choice, of course.

If Sunshine had been able to dress the way she pleased, she would have been in a tank top and short shorts, every random bruise and scrape from her adventures on display. Her hair would have been unkempt and matted, her face bare of any makeup, and her clothes very well may have sported blood stains that belonged to other people. Her life was rough and messy and her style reflected it.

However, her older brothers were extremely annoying. While James insisted on weekly check-ins and information on where she and Marrow were headed to next, Max had insisted on enchanting her clothing while she was in New Orleans. So instead of being dressed as she would have liked, she was dressed to the ex-model’s standards: her hair was in neat curls, her makeup professionally done, and her garb a long, golden gown that hugged her curves with black heels. She’d flipped Max off the moment he’d done it. She’d never admit that she secretly liked it.

“Want to go sit down and get some food, Sun?” Marrow asked, pressing a kiss to the side of her wife’s head. Food was always an easy win with Sunshine.

And it would have been, had Sunshine not locked eyes with Andy. It had been seventeen years since she’d seen her last. They’d been almost the same age, then. And now, now it was like she was staring her childhood in the face.

“I’m gonna go say hi to Andy,” she decided. “Before she can vanish again,” she added quietly.

Marrow shook her head a bit, but nodded, as she went off to rejoin the other adults.

Sunshine didn’t waste a moment, as she headed on over to the table where Andy and a butch girl with red hair sat. No Zari, she noted. Had that crashed and burned already? “Hey there, loser,” she said with an affectionate grin - unconsciously mirroring what she had said on Genosha, when Andy and the others woke up from the ice. “Did you miss me?”

It took Andy a moment to recognize the woman in front of her. Seventeen years had been kind to Sunshine. It was her voice that made it clear who she was, and that Marrow was there too, though she went off to chat with other people.

”Holy shit. You’re here too!” Andy bounced up to her feet. She was smiling. She didn’t hug Sunshine, not that she was against it. But the two of them hadn’t been that close. Andy was still getting used to the idea that she could hug people.

To Andy waking up on Genosha was not all that long ago. Not even a full year had passed for her. She recognized the phrasing and the smile and the way Sunshine held herself. So much had changed. So little had changed.

”Honestly, yeah. I missed everyone. Though I did it the short way and it’s only been a few months for me. I heard you all thought I was dead or something.”

Sunshine didn’t have Andy’s trepidation around a hug. They hadn’t been particularly close, but she was family regardless. She’d stood vigil by her rigid corpse, screamed and cried and cursed the world as she waited for those eyes to open up again. That sort of pain didn’t come from an absence of love. So she pulled Andy in close, hugging her as fiercely as she wished she had all those years ago. She should have hugged all of them - shouldn’t have been so afraid that if she embraced them, they’d shatter like glass and leave her alone again - that she would find her family just to lose them.

“Blame Max for the outfit, he still fucking sucks,” she explained, pulling away from the hug to raise a middle finger in Max’s direction again. “And duh, of course I’m here. How else am I supposed to spoil my favorite nephews and niece? Don’t go anywhere too soon, I’ll have something in my bags you’ll like, I’m sure of it.” Was it all stolen? Yes. But she prided herself on being the aunt that gave the kids things the parents would never allow. She’d gotten some tech off some loser to give to Dorian, a jeweled ring that she didn’t know the value of for Danni, and a vintage Dazzler record that had just been collecting dust on a shelf for Millie. There was probably something she could give to Andy - maybe a keepsake from Genosha.

“I mean… Casper couldn’t find your spirits, so… we didn’t really know what happened to you.” Sunshine’s smile was tight. “I’d hoped Marrow and I would find some trace of you. That’s kind of our thing now. We go look for mutants who need help, all over the world.”

”Don't sell yourself short. You clean up good.” Andy felt her eyes misting a little as she hugged Sunshine back.

”You never seemed to sit still so that makes sense. And don't worry. I don't think I'll be disappearing again.” She stepped back from the hug.

”Zari really was from the future. And another reality. She went home the other day.” Andy wasn't mad she had been left behind. It gave her this family back. But the implied “and left me” hung in the air answering the unasked questions.

”Magneto lives next to Max and I found out around Halloween that Max was a parent to one of my new friends at school and the last few weeks have sort of been a wild whirlwind.”

“Fuck her,” Sunshine immediately said, not giving a second thought to her audience. If the kids didn’t know swear words by this point, it was her duty to inform them. She’d been the one Dorian had picked up flatscan from, after all. “You can do way better,” she then eyed the silent butch that Andy had been with. “And are doing way better, it seems,” she teased. For Sunshine, love was about finding someone who wouldn’t leave you - who would choose to stay with you, no matter what. If Andy’s ex hadn’t been able to do that, then she wasn’t good enough for her anyway.

“Ugh, I knoooow. They all decided to become dads, like, right after we left the island. I guess James and Cas had already taken in Danni, but then Max and Ben did the same exact thing. Not that I’m complaining, y’know? Fucking love my nephews. But they’re all so boring and mature now,” she sighed. “Like, they know how taxes work and stuff. Real flatscan behavior. They used to be cool.”

”So far so good. This is Gideon. I also kissed America a bit ago and so now I think we are a throuple but America is also dating Katie and Cassie so I'm going to need a flow chart I think.” Andy laughed. It was a soft honest thing. Nothing that Sunshine would have ever heard from Andy before. Andy had been a scared kicked puppy before. She wasn't now. Even if there was still fear, it was buried under the happy feelings she had right now. It slithered there, but wasn't her focus. Not with so many reunions that had just happened.

Gideon flashed a peace sign at Sunshine. “Sup?” She’d been absorbed in her phone for the moment, deleting a certain app off of it - and she hadn’t wanted to really intrude on Andy’s conversation.

“Sup,” Sunshine replied with a laugh. She shook her head slightly, more impressed than anything with the complex web of relationships Andy had grown. It was a far cry from the girl she remembered, struggling to tell Zari her feelings or even define their relationship. “Good for you, man. You seem happy. Maybe Harry can give you some advice on juggling multiple relationships,” she mused. “You told him you’re back, yeah?”

”Thank you. I haven't talked to him yet. I did see him. Though but got distracted talking with Valerie,” Andy admitted. ”I should though. God I feel like everyone I ever knew has just appeared.” She laughed, though it wasn't true. Many people were missing still.

”So world traveler, what is that like?”

“You see a lot of cool shit,” Sunshine answered. “It’s pretty awesome, most of the time. We try to help whoever we can - things are better for mutants now, but that isn’t true everywhere. And not every mutant can make it to the French Quarter. So Marrow and I fuck up every asshole that we can, and I’m not nearly as good a healer as James, but I do my best,” she shrugged slightly. She blew a bit of air through her lips, letting them puff out for a moment. “I don’t think I’ll do it forever, though. I miss them when I’m not here. And if you tell anyone I said that, I’ll kill you.”

“Bet,” Gideon chuckled.

”My lips are sealed.” Andy grinned. ”That does sound nice. I’ve been thinking about what I’ll do and I might open a gym. A place like the Drummonds was. It was a good place.” Andy had never given much thought to the future before. She had never thought she’d make it to adulthood anyway. Now that there was some hope, plans had started to seep through.

”I don’t really remember what your powers were. I thought it was something to do with disease? Can you heal too?”

Gideon’s jaw dropped. “Dude. Can I go in on that with you? I’d fucking love that. Think of all the thirst trap content I could make. And the gains.”

Sunshine giggled. “You sound like Marrow,” she noted. “Nah, not with powers - I mean, I can’t mend your broken bone, but if there’s an infection or something then I’m your gal. You’d be surprised - or maybe you wouldn’t be - how many people are dying across the world from disease just because they don’t have access to medicine. Mutants and flatscans alike. So I help them out as I can, and James taught me enough that I’m basically a paramedic for everything else. And my other thing is more useful for violence - the near perfect aim trick.”

Andy laughed and nodded at Gideon’s request. ”Totally. I think Leah is interested too.” She squeezed Gideon’s knee, and then looked back up at Sunshine. ”Yeah, not super surprised. I was pretty stuck in my own little world growing up, but I wasn’t blind to how fucked up everything around the whole world was. Everything I do is good for violence.” Andy shrugged a little. ”Fast reflexes, and lighting at my fingertips.” She knew that there were less scrupulous ways to use her lighting than she had. Andy didn’t plan on using them in such ways. The human body required a certain amount of it to survive and Andy could turn it off just as easily as she could turn it on.

Sunshine scrunched up her face for a moment, thinking. “Have you thought about learning CPR?” she suggested. “You could be a defibrillator essentially - delivering the pulses to bring someone back. It’s not as cool and flashy as breaking someone’s fucking knee on TV but… I dunno. Maybe I’m old and lame now, but saving lives is pretty sick. Much more fun than taking them.”

Andy had not thought about the reverse. She blinked for a moment thinking. ”It would be good to know. Definitely.” Andy’s way of saving lives had always been to beat the shit out of the person causing problems. This was a nice change of perspective.

In that moment, Sunshine knew exactly what she was going to gift to Andy. “James is a good teacher. Since you’re going to be hanging around in New Orleans for a minute until school again, right? So lame you’re going to school. Should’ve had the Genosha telepaths just download math for you like I did,” she stuck out her tongue slightly.

”Math has not been the issue. I basically lost seventeen years doing the time travel thing. Besides, if I hadn’t gone to school I wouldn’t have met Danni and Dorian and if I hadn’t met them I’d probably be hiding in a well or something.” Andy laughed. ”I’ll ask him. He’s like my neighbor now.”

She couldn’t help but laugh at that. “A well? You can do better than that,” she tsked. Losing seventeen years was something she could empathize with, however. Her life hadn’t really begun until she landed with the Mutant Underground - everything before that was a blur, shivering in the streets and dodging patrols, with the occasional stint in juvi to keep things fresh. She wasn’t dyslexic like Andy, but she hadn’t been able to read until she was eighteen. “At least pick something with style like… a bridge. Be a bridge troll. Scare flatscans as they come across and take their money.”

”Oh I was thinking of that movie, The Ring. Where the girl comes out of the well and through the T.V. I could probably pull off the look. Let my hair grow longer and a little grosser.” She reached up and pulled her hair so it covered her face and leaned a little so it dangled. ”Seven days.” She intoned, making her voice a bit crackly like T.V. static.

Sunshine stared at her blankly. “There’s a movie called the Ring? And it’s not about, like, some stupid breeder wedding?”

Andy pulled her hair back. She loved movies, horror especially and the more ‘b’ the better as far as she was concerned. ”Yes! It is a classic Japanese horror film. It is about a cursed VHS tape. If you watch it you get a phone call that tells you ‘seven days’ and then you die on the seventh day. There is this creepy girl who climbs out of a well and through the t.v. to do the murdering. There were a couple remakes and reboots but the original Japanese and honestly I enjoyed the original American one too are where it's at.”

Sunshine cackled. “Okay, I have to watch this. I love seeing stupid bitches get theirs. Do you text? Maybe we do an Underground movie night. I’ll make Maxie get us popcorn with all the fixings. Before everyone leaves town.”

Andy nodded and pulled out her phone. It now had more phone numbers in it than ever before and that filled her heart with a bit of joy. After Sunshine had entered her number she listened to Vision’s speech. She didn’t want to dance so she was happy that America had someone to dance with. The speech was sweet. She was surprised that he called each of them out personally with things they did during the fight. Andy leaned against Gideon again.

”Food?” She was uncomfortably hungry.

Finley watched with fascination as Franklin flayed his own flesh. Interesting. What an unusual pair of people they had found themselves in a group with? If this had been earlier in their tenure among humans Finley, well, Finley would have followed something other than their nature. But here and now, there were more rules. The young woman, Annika, had yet to respond to the situation, and Finley watched her.

Was she afraid? Was she sickened? Was this normal for her? They waited; they still technically needed blood from both her and Franklin. Flesh was all and well for certain parties, but this was not one such situation. Finley sat perfectly still, the stillness of a creature waiting for prey, except for the fingers that twined with the tendril of Dysphoria.

To Dysphoria they sent warmth, assurances, and appreciation. There was a tinge of guilt because Finley had consumed the ‘blood’. It was a necessary thing to know if their magic would work with the strange material, but they had stepped into the risk. They would not again. Nervous Rohan was safe from Finley on that venture. No memories or power to borrow (so to speak) had come to Finley. The strange curse had tried to wrap around Finely’s heart, and that danger was not to be ignored. Oh no, Finley would not allow that to happen. They were as free as their kind could be. To yoke themselves to a curse as malignant as that would be suicidal.

Connie was somehow able to contain the recoil that started deep within her as Jake licked her items. She trembled a little. Part of her knew she’d have to clean all of these items before touching them again. Connie did not have OCD. She did not like being touched overly much. She hated body fluids. Thankfully, Jake had not licked her directly.

Clearing her throat a little, Connie said. ”I’m glad you like them. If you’d like, you may keep that one.” She indicated the one Jake had licked. Connie wasn’t completely sure she could clean it and make herself forget that he had licked it. This was a better option.

“That gives us some data to work with. Since I have never actively interacted with the Statue of Arydon is not included in what you sensed.” Connie lifted her notebook back up to her knee and started writing on a new page. She wrote down what Croan and Barty were discussing. Despite her apparent distraction with Jake, she had not ignored what the pair discussed.

The part of her that had once turned a stone statue of a bird into a flesh thing wanted to reach out again and touch the statue. A bit of fear that was coiled in her gut steered her away from such actions. If she were to, and the statue only ate her magic instead of using it, this would be a waste. If she were unable to return the stone to flesh, if she failed... If she was wrong... No. Connie was not ready to try something that could be too costly; when she did that, she would be certain that it would work.

Andy gave a little shrug at the comment about being better off without time travel. Because time travel had brought her here, and it had saved all of her friends once. Maybe they could have saved Genosha without Zari, but the students on her team wouldn't be alive without it. They'd have all died at the hands of a villain wanna be. They had died at his hands, but that timeline had been snuffed out.

"I'm going to go back to my girlfriend," Andy gestured over to where Gideon sat. She saw that Dorian and Percy were both back and sucking face. Good for them. "I'm going to eat so much gumbo I feel like I'm going to burst. Then I'll eat a beignet or two, and dance. Maybe not in that specific order. It was a pleasure to meet you...uh."

"Eva, Eva Moore. Your girlfriend knows who I am," Eva said, smiling. It was rare enough that people didn't know who she was. Even stranger that they'd recognize Val before her.

"Right, thank you, Eva, nice to meet you. And Valerie good to see you. I do want to catch up more sometime soon. Okay." Andy waved and headed back over to Gideon, who was sitting where she had left her. America was on the dance floor.

"Sorry about that. Long story, but she's an old friend. I haven't seen her since Genosha." Andy wasn't sure how much Gideon had picked up on Andy's history. The two of them hadn't spent an incredible amount of time together. Though, as Andy thought about it, she was certain Gideon had been flirting with her since the beginning. She sat down next to Gideon and leaned against her.

The weather started to turn bad again. The rain was coming down harder and the wind picked up. The fact that it was a summer storm helped keep it from being cold. But it was miserable. A distant rumble of thunder could be heard.

”Should we just stick with the small groups we already established? I was with Rhi this morning. Millicent and uh, Brandon, were together, Tony and Constance. That sort of leaves Sam out, but maybe Sam could bounce between the group. Passing information between us in safe places.” Ralph suggested. He wasn’t 100% on board with the idea, but it would bring consistency for them. The staff and family might not notice if they kept to the same pairings they had already fallen into naturally.

”It’s fine if you already destroyed your notes. It was just an idea. I still have mine. I shoved it into my bag.” Ralph had wished he had destroyed it, but he didn’t know how to. Burning it was apparently effective at least.

”We should head back soon.”

Andy was on high alert now. Ready to fight if she needed to. She was tense and looking around watching for threats. April was introducing herself to some skater chick, she was valid for that.
Someone else caught her eye, and Danni was yelling at her. Another someone with a silly nickname. She smiled. Andy had no idea who the new girl was, but she was about their age. They didn’t seem like a threat.

Andy nodded at the whispered thank you from Dorian. She glanced over her shoulder when she heard Percy move. She saw that his body was slumped over. Andy knew that Dorian had possessed him and took Percy into the astral then. She nodded to herself and decided she’d keep watch over him. America would be fine if she kept Percy safe for a bit. She had her whole team here to vibe with. She’d hopefully understand, if not... well good to know that now.

”Hey Ben. He is chatting with Percy. That guy,” She nodded in Chase’s direction, ”I don’t know who he is or anything but Percy does not like him. The guy got into his personal space, touched him, and Percy’s face...” She trailed off for a moment and then quietly, just loud enough that Ben would be able to hear her. ”He had that look that kids get in the homes where the foster parents beat them. Like someone who had been hit and was flinching, ready for it to happen again. I don’t know how he did it but all the dishes flew at the guy. I’ve never seen him do that. Normally he just teleports around or speaks Greek.”

Ben kept his composure, but his heart sank. He knew exactly the look Andy was describing. After his resurrection, he had wanted to find a way to help folks meaningfully - to be more than just a mildly strong guy with tentacles. He’d earned his GED and then his bachelor’s in social work. “Thank you for telling me,” he said quietly. He then looked across the room, and motioned to catch the eye of one of his partners, before nodding in Chase’s direction and tapping underneath his eye.

Gideon had come over and joined her. Andy smiled and bumped her shoulder. ”Thanks for joining me. Probably best to not risk it. I’m gonna keep an eye on him while they are gone. Do you want to order food?”

It was then that she noticed someone else that had appeared out of nowhere. She knew that face, it was older, but Andy wasn’t surprised by her being here. Especially since Andy knew a lot of the MU were still friends. Veil wasn’t alone. Harry was there too, and the guy Harry had started dating on Genosha. She didn’t remember his name. Something with a D?

She sat up straighter. ”Veil.” She whispered. When Andy thought of her time back at the MU Veil was who she thought of first. Veil was who pulled her out of a fight, literally, and got her into a safe building, and a warm bed. Veil was the leader of the MU. She was the one who had asked Andy for help. Had told her she didn’t need to, but if she wanted to she could stay and help. Veil had risked her life for Andy’s. They hadn’t even known each other for twenty four hours yet. Veil was... The first person who treated her as a hero.

“Go on, I’ll protect him.”

Val turned and made eye contact with one of her biggest regrets, one of her greatest questions, as she was called a name she had not gone by in a long time. A name she had left in the past alongside that life - or at least, she had tried to do so. She shouldn’t have been that person anymore - the mutant terrorist or liberator, another protege Xavier had discarded, tossed aside to run a project he didn’t believe in, and one she desperately did. She had seen the worst of humanity, had given her life to see her people safe, to see her people free. It had devoured her own personhood, her identity, her personality and sense of self.

And as she looked at Andy, it was like she’d never left that life behind. She cloaked the two of them in invisibility, immediately assuming that Andy wanted to speak to her privately, hence the whispers. And then she motioned her head towards the dance floor, towards the musicians whose instruments would cover their words.

Eva winced. She was proud of the steps that Val had made, but concern passed through her. She knew that the girl who had just disappeared with her wife was someone important from the past. But she hadn’t gotten details yet. It wouldn’t be until they could be alone that Eva would ask. She could get details from the others, from Harry, or Max (not Casper) about this kid, but that wouldn’t tell her what was going through Val’s mind.

”Thanks Ben. Sorry to leave again, Gideon. This is someone from my past. I should talk to her for a bit. Get me some gumbo. I’ll be right back.” Andy stood up and joined Veil. Andy had never considered herself a hugger, but becoming friends with Dorian and Danni had sort of forced it upon her. She held back. She wanted to hug Veil. Thank her. But Veil had never come across as the hugging type. She had been so strong. So much had been going on that was insanely overwhelming but she had done everything to keep the MU together. Andy had felt bad when moving out of the MU apartments and into Magneto’s place because she didn’t want to disappoint Veil. She had taken Selene because she didn’t want to disappoint Veil.

“Hey,” Andy had been riding a bit of a high from the Contest and ‘kissing’ Gideon. She felt all of that drop away. Nerves started to take over. That fear of being rejected. She had left without a word and sure Max and Magento both said they weren’t mad, but would Veil be?

”Sorry about leaving without saying anything. It was just that, Zari’s watch, it told her she had stopped the thing she had gone back in time to stop and she had to go back right then and there. I had a choice. Go with her... See what my future could be. Or stay and...” She trailed off. What had staying meant? She remembered Magento once telling her to finish her sentence. “Struggle to find peace.” She admitted. Staying meant she’d struggle. Running away meant that she’d leave all of that behind and she could start again.

Andy couldn’t look her in the face. She was so scared to see disappointment or anger there. So scared that Veil, who had been ready to get Andy out of there and to safety when they had been overwhelmed by the M-Pox that Andy had been one of the few capable of fighting left, would treat her as the child she still technically was.

Veil hadn’t known what to expect from Andy - but in no universe did she feel she deserved an apology. She had done her best to protect Andy, to keep her safe and alive, but at the very end, she’d failed her. She’d given her a burden she never should have had to bear. She’d forgotten that Andy was just a child, and instead saddled her with Selene, with an immortal mutant they had barely managed to defeat. She’d been no better than Xavier in the end. And Andy wasn’t the only one present she had hurt. Her gaze flickered to Ben. To Max and James and Casper. To their children. How could they forgive her when she couldn’t even forgive herself? When she had been the one to advocate for the person that hurt them so dearly?

“You don’t owe me any apologies, Andy,” Veil said quietly. “I’m the one that owes them to you. I never should have asked you to take Selene. I treated you the same way X treated me. As a soldier, instead of as a person.” She shut her eyes, feeling the swell of a force field growing around her skin. “I’m so, so sorry. I only ever wanted to do right by you, by our people.”

“She's my mom. I have to protect people from her. But Max has her right now. I needed to be able to focus.” Andy smiled, it was a small nervous smile, as she finally looked up at Veil.

“You saved me. If you hadn't been there I would have never survived to make it to Genosha in the first place. And without Genosha I wouldn't have found my family. I wouldn't have made it here. I was fighting for my life already and you gave me direction, focus. If not for you I would have broken. Things were rough the last couple of months, but that's been in a relatively safe world. Look,” She gestured around them. ”Seventeen years ago, this could never have happened. These people are all here in one place celebrating a game. Hell, I've been in school. I don't even think in the last several months I have even talked to someone who wasn’t a mutant or something ‘non-standard.’ Until today. Where we got brand offers. If anyone is exploitive it is those suits. Not you. It was probably dumb of me to skip the last seventeen years, but I got to go to a future where this can happen.” She gestured around again.

”I wouldn't be here if you hadn't been there. So thank you. And yeah I am sorry I left the way I did. It was a dick move. You all thought I was dead or something. When really Zari was a time traveler and I just basically ran away because I was scared.”

Andy didn't fully believe the world was perfect or safe. But it was safer than it had ever been before for her. She would be ready, always ready, for when things shifted. But for this shining moment she had a bit of hope. And even if things did go badly in the future she'd have this day to remember that the world could be safe.

Veil shook her head. Maybe once, she would have believed that - that it was the child’s responsibility to deal with their megalomaniacal mother. Not anymore. Andy had been through more than she ever should have had to, but she was still a child. And her only responsibility was to live. That was it. Nothing more, nothing less. “Andy, I want you to hear this and promise me that you will remember it. You are responsible for no one but yourself. Your only sins are your own,” Veil said firmly. It was a lesson she herself had struggled to accept - one she still grappled with. She didn’t always believe it. Right now, she certainly didn’t. But she didn’t want Andy to turn out like her - to suffocate under the weight of other people’s actions, to claim them as her own.

What she said, though, about how the world had changed - it made her eyes misty. It was an incredibly different one from a few decades past. But it wasn’t like this everywhere. There were still places where mutants were hated and feared, still places where Purifiers and the Friends of Humanity and Orchis and Coven Akkaba and so many more gathered, plotting to undo them. Even entire realms were devoted to their hatred of mutants - Otherworld was particularly nasty. It was safe here in the United States - but for how long? How long until being pro-mutant fell out of fashion, and facism rose again in its place? How long would Andy and Danni and Dorian and Millie and countless others be safe to just be children?

How long until mutant suffering became profitable again?

They couldn’t stop fighting, even now. And it was a fight Veil longed to rejoin, one that her abstinence from threatened to drown her in guilt. She was in her forties, with a beautiful wife and an amazing life, and she still wondered about if she had made the right choice - if it was right to leave Veil behind and just be Valerie.

But these weren’t thoughts she wanted to put on Andy. They were her burden to bear and hers alone.

“I’m still going to be here for you,” Veil promised. She reached into her pocket, and pulled out her two phones - one personal, one for… other purposes. “This is my main number,” she said, reciting the personal one. “And this one is for if things get bad,” she added, saying the second one. “If you need anything, any time of night or day, any place, let me know. I’ll be there as soon as I can. You deserve to be safe and free, Andy. I wish it could have happened on Genosha. But I’m glad it’s happening here, now.” Even if she didn’t know for how long.

Andy had a lot of her own sins. That was something she did have to carry. But she tried to keep her smile up and nod. “I will.” She told Veil seriously. She pulled out her own phone and entered the two numbers, the second one she put an E next to to indicate ‘emergency.’

“Thank you. I appreciate that. I wish it could have been on Genosha too.” She paused for a moment. ”I was scared the whole time it would fall apart. That something bad would happen. That that little bit of safety would be ripped away.” She looked away, her eyes burning. ”That feeling hasn’t left. I’m trying to not let it consume me this time. I can’t let it. Everytime I have had this feeling it has happened. But I realized that it doesn’t matter because right now I am happy.” She took a deep breath. ”I have friends and I am happy. Right now. I can’t let tomorrow’s woes suffocate me before I ever face them. I’ll be prepared for them, but tonight, I will be happy. I’m going to keep grasping onto those things that make me happy. I’ll drown myself in people that are good. Because I have them right now. Fear made me so unwilling to trust or love people for so long. It took me too long every time. But I lost them anyway. I loved them and I lost them. So now I will love them harder and sooner. This little slice of happiness is where I will go when they are gone. I won’t forget them, no matter what. And no matter what I will fight to keep this.”

She had promised Magneto ‘Never again,’ in a way she was making that promise again to Veil. Andy refused to let the world become what it had been. She would be ready for it. She’d fight it. Because days like today were worth it.

“When did you become so wise?” Veil asked, her heart breaking. She knew exactly what Andy meant - felt exactly what she was feeling. It was the only way they could carry on. It was the only way they could live, knowing that tomorrow was never promised. Her gaze flickered over towards the people she loved, the people who were not promised to her - the people she would fight until her last breath to protect. Eva. Harry. Davie. Millie. James. Casper. Ben. Max. Danni. Dorian. Andy. Magneto. Her family. She wiped her eyes on the back of her sleeve. “Come on, there’s someone I’d like you to meet - my wife.”

Valerie dropped the invisibility on the two of them.

”Therapy.” She shrugged. ”And Danni, and Dorian.” She paused and gasped. ”You got married! Yes, I must meet her.” Andy grinned. She didn’t react to the tears, she had them in her eyes too.

Val couldn’t help but laugh slightly. “You two? Harry dragged me kicking and screaming to therapy a few years after Genosha,” she admitted. She put an arm around Andy, and pulled her in close for a moment, before leading her on over to her wife - to Eva. “Eva, this is Andy - she was part of the Mutant Underground cell I led. Andy, this is my wife, the incredible Eva Moore.”

”Good.” Andy said. She leaned into the hug. Thankful for it in a way she couldn’t entirely express. A sense of relief washed through her. Things with Veil would be okay.

”Hi,” Andy offered her hand out to Eva who shook it. ”Nice to meet you.” Andy had no clue who Eva Moore was. But she did see that Eva looked surprised.

”Hello. Nice to meet you too. I saw you during the Contest. You were impressive. The others mentioned you were part of their group. It is wonderful to meet someone else from Val’s past.” Eva was smiling, she had given Val a worried glance at first, but relaxed.

”Thank you. It was fun.” Andy had fought for her life. During the Contest she had known she wasn’t in any true danger so she had never been worried. Andy did look at Val, she had never known her real name. ”Is Val... That’s your name?” She didn’t want to ask if it was her real name, or if it was just what she went by now.

“Oh!” Val was surprised for a moment - she’d gotten so used to folks using that name with her, she’d almost forgotten Andy hadn’t known it. She had exclusively gone by Veil back in the days of the Underground, and whenever a human name was needed, she would pick an alias. Andy was more likely to know her as Kayley Webber than Valerie. “Yeah. It’s short for Valerie. I don’t really go by Veil anymore, it’s a… it’s a long story. I’ll tell you about it another time.” She gave her a bit of a pained smile. “But the short version is, I crashed out in a major way, got help, and left my life as a domestic terrorist behind.”

”I like Valerie.” Andy smiled. ”I’m glad you got help. We all need it. Sorry for calling you Veil, not that I knew better. But I saw you and it was like... Well six months ago or so. Time travel is kind of a bitch.”

Finley was impressed. They were also a little turned on. That was not as concerning to Finley as one would hope. Their vaguely predatory smile had grown as Rohan dug into his own... hmm, flesh was not the correct word any more, bark? What was the inner part of a tree called?

”What is the inner part of a tree called, not the bark part, but once you get past that?” They asked anyone willing to part the knowledge upon them. They tilted the glass that Rohan had handed them. A little disappointed, but a spark of glee still in their eyes.

With little concern for health and well-being Finley stuck a finger into the viscous bubbling liquid and then stuck their now sticky finger into their mouth. They only needed a sample, but they had to verify that this was something they could work with.

Finley’s eyes went blank for a moment. They did not say anything, they did not move. When they finally did they reached for Dysphoria, giving them a loving caress.

”I can use this. Finley did not elaborate. “Annika, I will also need some of your blood.” They then pulled up a seat at a wooden table with glass beakers. Finley offered one to Annika.

”Feel free to be less interesting when you bleed. Unless you are also made of interesting material that is not the normal weak flesh of mortals. I will be disappointed, but understanding.”

Finley neither said thank you or please during any of these exchanges. They saw no need for it. This was a group project for a singular goal. If any of the others needed such things from them they would not expect those words. Those oh so dangerous words. No debt was being made here. Work and skills were being exchanged. It was fair.

Connie sighed, disappointed in the contact that Barty had. Of course the prior student had been useless. They hadn’t left any notes behind. Anything verbal also would have been tainted by time. The delay between what had happened and passing on the information made that information all the less reliable.

On her knee, Connie started tapping her fingers. She started with her forefinger and then middle, and then ring, ending with her pinky. After taping her pinky she tapped her ring, then her middle and then her forefinger. She did this several times as she tried to understand what the fuck Jake meant.

There was nothing quantifiable. Nothing measurable. Just vague ‘feelings’. She understood, intellectually, that some people’s magic worked that way. In a way, her own magic did. However, she had spent the last almost dozen years digging into the minute details of her magic. She had found the cracks and crevices of her magic and figured out why and how. She didn’t know the source, other than what her father had told her ‘bloodline blessing’. That was alright. She could live with not knowing... She could. Really.

She was glad Jake hadn’t touched her. She wasn’t completely touch adverse but she did not know Jake well enough to feel comfortable with him touching her. He had gotten way too close for her personal space comfort, but he hadn’t crossed that little invisible line.

Connie gave up a bit on composure and folded over her ankles. She was flexible enough that she could lay her forehead on her ankles, almost touching the floor. Connie spent a moment just breathing before sitting back up.

”Alright, let us see if we can confirm this with resonance testing. Jake you said that you can sense the magic of others, such as our professor, in the object. Do you sense any of my magic in it?”

As Connie had not previously interacted with the object if it had any of her magic within that meant it was passively consuming magic. If it did not than someone had to actively interact with it.

She pulled from her bag several pieces of wood, clay, and metal. The clay was soft and pliable. She considered the pieces. Most of the wood and metal were pieces she had channeled her magic through before. She picked up one of these and offered it to Jake.

”Here is a sample of what something that has been manipulated by me feels like.”

"Well, I had unsupervised access to the internet in the 2010's, so... Yeah. I never saw the uh... source material. But I am aware of its existence." Andy responded to Kate. She was very hot in the face suddenly. Somehow it was not from the public kissing. She was pulled from that conversation, though, as a food-eating contest was declared.

Andy was not a fast eater. She also didn't eat much in general. Usually just what was needed to get through the day. She was hungry, so she could eat, but she doubted she'd be good at a food-eating contest. She was about to reply when she saw someone she didn't recognize got into Percy's personal space. Percy did not like people in his personal space. She barely knew the guy and knew that. She frowned.

Andy watched as Percy tensed up, as tears formed in his eyes, as fear rolled off of him. This kid had hurt Percy. She didn't know how, or when, or why. She didn't care. Andy had seen kids in foster care with this exact look. Percy was defending himself, and the guy was stepping away. She wished she had a power set that could help right in that moment, but she didn't. She also wouldn’t let it stand. Percy may not need her stepping in, and she decided she wouldn’t be violent about it. But she would make it clear she would protect him.

"Be right back." She told America and Gideon. The food-eating contest could wait. Or they could do it without her. She went over to where Percy was sitting, and the stranger was slinking away. Andy pulled up a chair and sat with her back to Percy, staring at the new guy, placing herself between the two of them.

If it hadn’t been for the cash that Demi had handed over, Dobbs probably would have laughed in his face. But he pocketed the money and note. He’d grab the items, even if he did it with an eye roll. Dobbs left and headed off to start his work. Leaving all of the ‘kids’ to their own devices.

Emily smiled at Nancy. ”Yeah, I’m down. And seriously, no problem. It’s a good thing that several of us learn it. Not just for you, but that is definitely part of why I was willing to learn. If something happens the more of us that know how to use it, the better. Let me swing by the kitchen real quick and let Marco know what Dobbs said. I’m sure he’ll appreciate it. He can be really picky about his ingredients. I’m just happy if the food is warm and tastes decent.”

Quickly, Em ducked into the kitchen area. She saw that Aster, Demi, and Zeke were talking in the cleaning closet. She shook her head and called out to Marco. ”Hey, two things. One apparently if you make enough food that Dobbs can eat too, he’ll pick up anything extra you want off the books. And two I’m going to explore the place for a bit with Nancy. I think I saw a bell on the porch you can ring when food is ready.” She kissed her fingertips and blew the kiss at him. Em didn’t want to disturb him during his cooking time. It did look like what he was making was in the oven, though. She reveled in the warmth of the kitchen. This week might actually be a bit fun if they did it right.
